01 Watson Pavilions Location: Kentucky St, Lawrence, KS Semester: Fall 2020 Software: Sketchup, Lumion, Adobe Photoshop When considering the important factors that make up a community oftentimes communities that are the most closely knit are the most successful. For this project, we were challenged to use steel within our structure to design a space that captures the essence of Lawrence, KS, and includes the #1073 locomotive that can be found in Buford M. Watson Park. Watson Park is located in the heart of Downtown Lawrence and has a lot of historical significance to the town, so through my project, I wanted to bring the community together and reflect the rich history of the town.

Since Watson Park is quite small and located between some other various minor parks, I chose to design a multi-pavilion pathway that begins at the trail from the Lawrence Boathouse and continues down and past the Aquatic Center. I designed four pavilions that maintain a similar look but vary slightly depending on their location. I connected these four pavilions using a pathway of red brick with ‘Lawrence, Kansas’ carved into it that was derived from many old buildings and sidewalks that once paved Downtown Lawrence. I also created a water feature surrounding the locomotive that has many fountains for the children of Lawrence to play in. By adding this water feature to the structure, I accomplished restoring the fun aspect that once allowed kids to climb on the train, but in a safe environment. These pavilion structures take into account various elements that shape the rich history of Lawrence from the old brick to the various significant historical locations and the #1073 locomotive. Through this project, I aimed to pay homage and highlight the historical significance of this town while bringing the community together with some lovely pavilions for them to enjoy. 02 Lawrence Sculpture Studio Location: W 11th St, Lawrence, KS Semester: Fall 2020 Software: Sketchup, Lumion, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator For the final project of my first semester in my second year, I wanted to study creating a building that is reflective of the activities that take place inside of it. The premise of this project was to create a sculpture studio that sits next to the Community Building in Downtown Lawrence and do so using masonry materials. Since sculpture often uses heavy materials to create works of art, I wanted my building to feel as sculptural and artistic as the activities that take place within it. My idea was to focus on creating various triangles out of my structure, so I incorporated triangles into many of my rooms and even angled my sidewalks so that they create triangular boundaries for sculpture gardens to sit on both ends of my building. The top half of my building, I decided, would be made of polished limestone and would differ from the limestone brick used in the bottom half of my building. The reason for these two material choices is that I wanted to maintain the monolithic element of my building while giving the appearance of more than 2 materials. My main precedent for this project was the East Wing of the National Gallery for its monolithic feel and use of heavy materials in contrast with its placement of delicate glass, so I designed a pyramidal, glass skylight that incorporates many small triangles to contrast my use of heavy limestone.

03 Baltimore Commons Location: Baltimore Ave, Kansas City, MO Semester: Spring 2021 Software: Sketchup, Lumion, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator For this project, I was challenged to design a high-tech “grocery store of the future” that sits in Downtown Kansas City. When analyzing the site of my building, I realized there was a lack of green space in the Downtown area. Through my design, I aimed to provide a space that is not only effective in its function but provides the area with much more than just a grocery store. For the form of my building, I wanted to create a contrast between different activities that would be taking place within my store. The more cylindrical part of my building holds more “premium” store activities such as a coffee bar, open grocery kiosk area, and a restaurant. In contrast, the more rectangular portion of my store encloses a more traditional grocery store sales floor along with some offices. Another main feature of my building is the shallow pool that one walks above to enter my store. I included this water feature not only to reflect that Kansas City is home to the second most water fountains in the world but also to create a feeling of calmness and serenity before entering the store. Since spending more time in a store tends to make people spend more money in a store, I wanted people to feel relaxed and slowed down prior to entering. The most important feature of my building is the walkable green roof which is accessible from street level. This green roof includes three light modulators which not only provide energy-efficient lighting to the sales floor but allow people to look down into the store from the roof. The open green roof is adorned with lots of foliage and overlooks spaces to provide the city with a communal space that brings people together and improves their quality of life.

04 Lawrence Indigenous American Museum Location: New Hampshire St, Lawrence, KS Semester: Fall 2021 Software: Sketchup, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Autodesk AutoCAD Through analyzing the aspects that make Lawrence a unique city, I decided to create a museum that highlights the rich indigenous history present in the community. For the form of my building, I wanted the shape to emulate the flow of water since the Kansas River played such a large role in the way of life for many of these tribes. Some of my precedents for the project included buildings by Zaha Hadid and the dome-like historic formations created by the indigenous people. Once I determined that I wanted my building to contain many curves, I used the program spaces to adjust the heights of the curves and their location. In addition to the exciting and flowing formations, I wanted to highlight the connection to nature that many of these people had by creating a courtyard between the two separate parts of my building to allow visitors to enjoy the outdoors. Within the courtyard, some visible skylights illuminate the basement of my building containing the museum exhibits. I chose to build the majority of my building underground to cut down on the need for additional energy to heat and cool the building as well as create a more private setting for the museum exhibits. Additionally, I chose to address the stormwater runoff issue which impacts many parts of the midwest by including a drainage system that utilizes the curvy nature of my building to collect, filter, and redistribute usable stormwater. Through my project, I aimed to create an outlet for education and appreciation towards cultures and heritage that are often overshadowed in our history.
