tony smith furniture / fall 2014 This entire studio was focused on Tony Smith and his use of tetrahedrons in his sculptures. We each chose a particular sculpture to focus our work. I chose “Spitball (upper right page) and used its base shape to develop it into my own sculpture. This beginning exercise helped to explore spaces within sculpture and relate them to an architectural idea. The following projects are a continuation of our study of Tony Smith as we explored his life and work.

tony smith house / fall 2015 This part of the studio experimented with a hypothetical house for Tony Smith using his quintessential tetrahedrons. Our first task was to take our furniture pieces from the previous assignment and unroll them into a 2D surface. Those ‘plans’ were transformed into these boxes. From there, the spaces and shapes informed our full design of the home (top photo). In designing his home, we considered his family life and personality. We also looked to Frank Lloyd Wright and John Lautner’s work in the Usonian era. In my particular house, I included a water sanctuary as well as an underground studio for Tony to escape.

kenyon college arts center / spring 2015 For this studio we collected data on artists, art centers, and contemporary museums to better understand the parameters of an art center on a small college campus. At Kenyon College, there is a main pathway that unites the majority of the academic and residential buildings. Our particular site on the campus was at the edge of the college and town, so there needed to be a link between both. The literal transparency of my building corresponds to the artificial transparency I wanted between town and college campus.

at the confluence:double loaded / fall 2015 The purpose of this studio was to design a multi-use, multi-family community at the Confluence, located at the intersection of the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers in Columbus, Ohio. Our team concept was focused around ‘double loaded’ on various levels. The buildings each had their own type of private garden on one side and centered on a piazza. We focused on bringing amenities to both private and public use.

This studio is focused around selecting a material and exploring its parameters through forces. My material of choice was 1/8 Baltic birch where I have explored its bendability along its edge by implementing a pattern to increase its flexibility. We have not yet been given any site context yet, so each of our material/forces may be applied to either a small or large scale context. I developed an apparatus in order to mechanically bend the wood and test its strength.

villa savoye / spring 2016 During this Revit class, we were asked to reconstruct Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye for the final project. We were encouraged to experiment with a variety of effects and materials for our plans, sections and renders to fully showcase what we had learned. A1.4 1

Villa Savo

sketches / 2010 Throughout Italy, I was encouraged to draw as much as possible. Whether detailed or a rough sketch, it is always important to document what one is seeing. The sketches come from Siena, Mantua, and Ravenna.

drawings / 2010 Here is a variety of charcoal drawings from Drawing I class at Lafayette College. The class focused on perspective, light v. dark, and the human body. The perspective drawing is from the interior of Lafayette College Art Building. The larger charcoal on black paper is from an exhibit of tires by Chakaia Booker who uses discarded tires as her primary medium to create sculptures.

office work As an architectural intern, I was involved with a rear porch addition and redesigned the front entrance of a home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio (below). I also was heavily involved in construction drawings and client meetings with a renovation of an early 20th century Tudor home.
