[ VOYAGER GOLDEN RECORD ]

The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The Voyager spacecraft are not heading toward any particular star, but Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light-years of the star Gliese 445, currently in the constellation Camelopardalis, in about 40,000 years. As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, the probability of a space-faring civilization encountering them is very small, especially since the probes will eventually stop emitting electromagnetic radiation meant for communication.

The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University. Sagan and his associates assembled 116 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind, thunder and animals (including the songs of birds and whales). To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, spoken greetings in 55 ancient and modern languages, and printed messages from US president Jimmy Carter and U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. wikipedia.com webodysseum.com

Carl Sagan noted that “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played

only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.” Thus the record is best seen as a time capsule.

[ CHERUBINO GAMBARDELLO ]

Naples-based architect Cherubino Gambardella’s illustrations for his projects are beautifully rendered. In an age where the development of architectural ideas is largely carried out using digital technology, it’s lovely to see something so textured, layered, and varied. Mixing a variety of media, Gambardella’s images conjure up visualisations that evoke, not only the built shapes, but the atmospheres, materials, air-quality, traffic, and weather patterns of these urban environments. You get a strong sense of space and the interactions between structures, and there is also a slightly dark, sinister quality that intrigues as much as it engages. I found the way that he uses natural elements as a source for his cretivity interesting. He shows his achitecture in a seperate light from how you would usually see it, by demonstrating other techniques through the expression of earths natural elements.

The North Carolina-based artist is arguably the master of his medium; a creator of collages so delicately crafted it’s often impossible to tell they’ve been made from hand-cut paper. Though it’s by no means his only concern Bryan focusses a great deal on the cosmos in his work, leaving strange portals into the unknown at the centre of his images or placing earthly objects within inter-planetary scenes. While the man-made beauty of modern day life with the wondrous buildings put up in our cities or the machines we build to make our lives easier, sometimes nature just trumps all of that by being effortlessly amazing. Mikhail Mishainik demonstrates this perfectly with his images of Russian salt mines, which he managed to capture by venturing 650-feet below the city of Yekaterinburg, Russia. The naturally psychedelic mines are stunning with floor to ceiling swirls of earthy browns and oranges, interspersed with greens and rusty purples. Caused by the mineral carnallite, Mikhail has spent over 20 hours exploring the abandoned mines despite the risk of leaking chemicals and landslides. The patterns that have evolved over time are beautifully hypnotic and just the sheer scale of this natural phenomenon is what really boggles my mind.

From Sarajevo to Reykjavik to Lima, Boat Magazine shines a different kind of light on cities with big stories to tell. The boat team decamps to a different city every few months to immerse themselves in its quirks, customs and culture and then they produce a beautifully-designed, brilliantly written magazine documenting the things they learned. For each issue, they physically move to the focus city for a few weeks setting up their studio and working with locals to create the content. The locals get to decide what they want the world to know about their city, and the boat team work day and night to uncover stories that don’t usually get told. This inside/outside approach to a city keeps the perspectives varied and balanced and the overall content raw and often surprising. Digging deep
