CITY IN FLUX

CONCEPT

CITY IDENTITY When looking in to the concept of ‘city identity’ I began to ask myself what makes Manchester the Manchester people instantly recognise and love? It’s landmarks are directly recognisable and give the citys people A sensation of being at home when embedded in its surroundings. When observing Manchesters landmarks i then directed my focus on the many different areas of Manchester and what seperates them from each other. The Northern Quarter, Spinningfields, Deansgate, and Piccadily Gardens. All instantly recognisable when thought of and are seperate from each other in ones mind. This is because each area is well known for different reasons. Wether that be Spinningfields and its

resteraunts and bars, the Northern Quarter and its vintage shopping and cafes, or Deansgate and its night life. From this research i then began to explore the idea of each areas seperate identitys.

Spinningfields From researching the identitys of different areas in Manchester, I then began to look in to type and what different fonts were best suited to each particular area. would a sans serif or serif work best for Spinningfields, or would a more retro feel work best to show the northern quarters true personality. Or maybe a font with more elegance would best suit Deansgate. There were many different factors to consider when pinning a certain font with a certain area of manchester to show the true individuality behind each place.

CONCEPT

DIRECTION When walking around manchester the concept of Direction was very prominent in my mind. Many different factors i saw related to the notion of ‘direction’. There is signage all around the city, wether that be road signs, shop signs, navigation maps etc. As i began to photograph the many signs i aso began to look at how everybody is heading in some sort of direction. I felt I could demonstrate this sense of rush and urgency well through the form of collage. I enjoyed us-

ing different materiawls and ephemera to creat something that was easily transfered to a seperate media such as adapting the collages digitally.

CONCEPT IDEA - MAP WORK

INCORPORATING MANUAL & DIGITAL EXPERIMENTATION

Following my research of Stephen Walter and his exhibition of map work, I really wanted to experiment further incorporating aspects of his style, such as the use of text, black and white, and lack of imagery within his work. I began by using a variety of different scraps such as receipts, envelopes and tickets to create collage, I then went on to crop parts of them and edit them accordingly by changing the image brightness, levels and saturation. I then incorporated parts of a map to symbolise the subject of direction and the use of tickets

7

in the image I feel is a good representation of how people often follow a crowd, or the same direction repeatedly.

CONCEPT

PERSPECTIVE & POINT OF VIEW When walking around the city of Manchester I instantly began to notice and enjoy observing the geographic shapes made by the variety of buildings. How the angles, corners, height, and placement of building work together to creat a focus and ‘point of view’ to a persons eye really began to interest me. When taking pictures i placed my camera so that the picture would flow and so there was a main focus - the images shown a view from my perspective. I then further developed on this point and took my images

8

in to photoshop where i introduced manual experiments in with the images. My experiments show images each with a point of view from my perspective - with the intention of being shown as posters.

FINAL IDEA For my final idea I am going to further explore and refine my research and experimentation involving the concept ‘Perspective & Point of view’. A ‘point of view shot’ is often reffered to as a short filmscape showing what a character is looking represented through a camera. Point of view is an objective angle, but since it falls between the objective and subjective angle, it should be placed in a seperate category and given special consideration. My idea is to take the general idea of a ‘POV shot’ but move it in to a different media

19

channel rather than film. I intend to create a book showing the city of Manchester through a variety of POV shots. By changing the camera angles and perspective of a normal everyday image digitally, i hope to manipulate the image and therefore the perspective. and of I intend for the book to display the images as a digital metaphor of looking through the lense of a camera. I intend for the shots to show how geographic shapes are made by buldings, corners, windows, height and placement, and how these shapes work together in a picture.
