Kansas City QUAD Molly Knake & Jack Young ARCH 609 Kansas City Metro Station Hub
Kansas City Transit System
Hub Selection
Intersection of the Purple, Yellow, Green, and Inner Loop The station hub we selected is the intersection of four transit lines and also directly serving UMKC and Rockhurst University. This hub will be a destination point for many students, faculty, and residents of the neighboring communities. This will also be a critical intersection for commuters and for people switching transit lines.
Connection to Kansas City YELLOW LINE North-South 53 Miles
Overland Pk Conv.
Site Location The location we chose for this critical instersection in the Kansas City Transit system, is on the corner of 51st Street and Troost Avenue. This corner is centrally located in between two major universities in Kansas City: UMKC and Rockhurst University. Along with much of the hub’s traffic being comprised of students and faculty of the universities, this hub will also serve the neighboring residential communities.
49/63 Neighborhood Coalition • 10 local neighborhoods on both sides of Troost Avenue, a historical dividing line in the city. • 3,000 households • 8,000 residents UMKC • Student population: 16,019 Rockhurst University • Student Population: 2,185 Needs: • Only one local grocery store (Whole Foods on outer edge of community) • No local parks • Health market

This corner is centrally located between two major universities in Kansas City: UMKC and Rockhurst University. Along with much of the hub’s traffic being comprised of students and faculty of the universities, this hub will also serve the neighboring residential communities. Troost Avenue is one of the major bus routes for Kansas City. With the planned routes of each line, the Red & Green line will run East and West along 51st Street. The Purple and Yellow Line will run North and South along Troost Avenue.

Site Selection
This hub will be serving primarily the two neighboring universities and surrounding neighborhood communities. The corner of 51st Street and Troost Avenue is a central point in the community and was selected to ensure equitable access to the transit system.
Site Conditions
The two main entries to the hub are located from Troost Avenue and 51st Street, directly adjacent to the major bus stops and ride share drop off. The corner condition needs to maintain a clear visual connection for cars entering onto Troost Avenue from 51st Street. The entrance into the stations will be located directly above the intersection of the two station boxes.
Station Considerations
The Purple and Yellow lines will run North/South along Troost Avenue; the Red and Green lines will run East/West along 51st Street. With four transit lines running through the hub, we will condense the lines to share only two station boxes. There is also existing parking surrounding that could be used for a park and ride system for commuters.
Hub Concept
This Hub will become the central meeting point for students of UMKC, Rockhurst University, the surrounding neighborhoods, and the Kansas City area. As many universities have a main Quad for students to gather, this project will serve as a shared Quad for the universities and community.
Concourse, Platform, and Appendages Locations
The Red & Green Lines station box will be stacked on top of the Purple & Yellow Lines station due to the large elevation change that occurs in the North/South axis. This will allow the Purple & Yellow lines to stay at a more consistent elevation underground. Additional entrances are located on either side of 51st Street and Troost Avenue to provide direct access to the stations from expected arrival points.
The Quad
From intersecting all of the communities that will participate in this hub, the Quad was then placed on the site as a base for the hub.
Form Development
Maximizing Use of the Site
Axial Organization
Form Development
The Quad was then stretched back into the site to maximize use of the area. With the large elevation change within the site, a second level was created to match the top topograophy line. The second level will be used for amenities such as restaurants, bars, and green space.
The programming and circulation of the hub is all centered around the 45 degree axis that was created from mirroring the hub between two universities. By creating this symmetrical layout, we are immulating the idea of equal access for all in the community.
The facade was then peeled up from the corner of the site to reveal the main circulation happening inside. That curve then extends back to enclose the hub.
Skin System
Structural System
Natural Lighting
The facade will be a layered system of glass and perforated zinc panels. The use of transparent glass and perforated zinc panels was chosen to allow plenty of natural light to enter into the hub.
The primary structure of the hub will be glu laminated timber construction. The construction of the upper level of the hub will be repetitive arch ways that continue to the front atrium space. The structure will then radiate into the atrium to create a beautiful open space.
To highlight the primary circulation and axial organization, the zinc panels will be completely removed down the axis of the hub with a large skylight directly above the main circulation to the stations.
