The Quad
Kansas City Transportation Hub
Rapid Transit Hub Kansas City, MO
As a studio, we designed a rapid transit system plan to improve connectivity and accessibility throughout the Kansas City area. My partner, Jack Young, and I chose to design a transportation hub at the intersection of four tansit lines near Rockhurst University and UMKC.This hub will be a destination point for many students, faculty, and residents of the neighboring communities. This will also be a critical intersection for commuters and to make connecting rides in between bus routes, ride share services, and within the train system.
Form Development
Site Selection
This hub will be serving primarily the two neighboring universities and surrounding neighborhood communities. The corner of 51st Street and Troost Avenue is a central point in the community and was selected to ensure equitable access to the transit system.
Station Considerations
Concourse, Platform, and Appendages Locations
The Purple and Yellow lines will run North/South along Troost Avenue; The Red & Green Lines station box will be stacked on the Purple & Yellow Lines station due to the large elevation change that occurs in the North/ the Red and Green lines will run East/West along 51st Street. With four transit lines running through the hub, we will condense the lines to South axis. This will allow the Purple & Yellow lines to stay at a consistent share only two station boxes. There is also existing parking surround- elevation underground. Additional entrances are located on either side of 51st Street and Troost Avenue to provide direct access to the stations from ing that could be used for a park and ride system for commuters. expected arrival points.
Site Conditions
The two main entries to the hub are located from Troost Avenue and 51st Street, directly adjacent to the major bus stops and ride share drop off. The corner condition needs to maintain a clear visual connection for cars entering onto Troost Avenue from 51st Street. The entrance into the stations will be located directly above the intersection of the two station boxes.
Maximizing Use of the Site
The Quad was then stretched back into the site to maximize use of the area. With the large elevation change within the site, a second level was created to match the top topograophy line. The second level will be used for amenities such as restaurants, bars, and green space.
Skin System
The facade will be a layered system of glass and perforated zinc panels. The use of transparent glass and perforated zinc panels was chosen to allow plenty of natural light to enter into the hub.
Hub Concept
This Hub will become the central meeting point for students of UMKC, Rockhurst University, the surrounding neighborhoods, and the Kansas City area. As many universities have a main Quad for students to gather, this project will serve as a shared Quad for the universities and community.
Axial Organization
The programming and circulation of the hub is all centered around the 45 degree axis that was created from mirroring the hub between two universities. By creating this symmetrical layout, we are immulating the idea of equal access for all in the community.
Structural System
The primary structure of the hub will be glu laminated timber construction. The construction of the upper level of the hub will be repetitive arch ways that continue to the front atrium space. The structure will then radiate into the atrium to create a beautiful open space.
The Quad
From intersecting the four communities that will directly participate in this hub, the Quad was then placed on the site as a base for the hub.
Form Development
The facade was then peeled up from the corner of the site to reveal the main circulation happening inside. That curve then extends back to enclose the hub.
Natural Lighting
To highlight the primary circulation and axial organization, the zinc panels will be completely removed down the axis of the hub with a large skylight directly above the main circulation to the stations.
Northeast Exterior View
The Journey This cutaway view shows the multiple layers to this complex system. All users and visitors will enter the Hub on ground level and from there have the option to journey up to the second level for the restaurants and entertainment, or proceed down the main escalators into the transit stations. As a passenger proceeds down the main escalators, they have the opportunity to stop on the main concourse to then access the first platform, or continue down to the second concourse to acces the other two transit lines.

Innovation Hub
The University of Kansas
University of Kansas Innovation Hub Lawrence, Kansas Fourth Year Studio
This proposed Innovation Hub would be located in the West Research District of the University of Kansas. It would serve as housing for graduate students, visiting researchers, food service for the public, and also become a main transportation hub for campus. Although the Innovation Hub is focused on the future of the University of Kansas, it also needed to reflect on the history of campus. This project will inspire the future of the University of Kansas, and also honor the great tradition of this university.
Form Development
Lot setbacks and height restrictions
Cone of Vision that projects towards the historic district of campus
Creating masses that are parallel to the cone of vision
Adjusting the heights of each mass to emphasize the perspectives
Using materials that reflect the future of where we are going and the past to reflect on where we have come from. With the direction in which the LRT system travels, this also foreshadows the trip to be taken.

Down the Rabbit Hole: Museum for Research & Collaboration Fort Worth, Texas Third Year Studio
This project is a museum designed for researchers and is a place where people can come to share ideas, collaborate, and inform others. The form of this shape was influenced by how researchers think through different senarios. A person in this subculture is able to see different connections or patterns within a situation and bring these connections together.

Academic Music Hall
The University of Kansas
Academic Music Hall Lawrence, Kansas First Year Studio
This music hall was designed for the University of Kansas as a place for more casual performances and rehearsal rooms/ office space for visiting professors. The site we were given is located behind two large concrete buildings on campus. I wanted to create a space that allowed and encouraged the music to be spread throughout campus. The form was inspired by the hill on the site. This music hall emerges from the ground, sweeps up into the air to capture the music inside, and releases it onto campus.

Bike Shop
Lawrence, Kansas Second Year Studio This bike shop was designed for the downtown shopping district in Lawrence, Kansas. The site is located on the South edge of the shopping district. The form of this building came from multiple sun studies while also studying how foot traffic would flow into this shop. The facade lifts off the street to guide people towards the entrance and almost ‘pull’ people in. The facade encases the shop while protecting the interior from the harsh sun, but also allowing plenty of natural light through the openings.
