The Cake

Cake by Cake Art 10 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

All aspects of a wedding are meant to be customized and tailored to the preferences of the bride and groom. The wedding cake is no exception. The days of the cookie cutter white wedding cake, with a plastic bride and groom on top, are long gone. Today’s couples have infinitely more choices that can reflect their personal style, humor, and budget. “Each of our couples has had a unique spin or design in mind and it just makes our job that much more fun,” says Patti McDermott, owner of Miss Patti Cake in Snow Hill, Md. “We always encourage new ideas and say that the possibilities are truly endless. In the wedding cake world, we say ‘anything goes'. Each couple is so different from the next and it's exciting to help show off 12 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

K

Cakes & Dessert Trends

their personalities through their cake.” McDermott says that a new trend in cakes is a rustic style, which incorporates stylized, textured icing along with natural fabrics such as burlap or raffia. For beach weddings, seashell cakes are always a classic. Some may choose a tiered cake with elegant

pattern-work while others prefer a cupcake tower. For the couple with a unique flair, sculpted and 3-D groom’s cakes are also popular. Tiered cakes are truly classic but, for couples who wish to step out of the cake box, there are other possibilities. A novel idea for wedding dessert options is a dessert bar, either in place of or in addition to the traditional wedding cake,

which offers a variety of sweets for even the pickiest eaters. “Not everyone likes cake, so a dessert bar allows guests to have a sampling of a lot of different options,” says Robin Tomaselli, owner of Baked Dessert Café in Berlin, Md. Dessert bars are custom created and can offer delicious options such as cupcakes, mini cheesecakes, mini cannoli, brownies and assorted cookies. BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

13

In addition, a dessert bar is a good choice for couples who want to provide selections for guests with dietary restrictions. There are many options that can be included in a dessert bar that are naturally gluten free, Tomaselli says, such as cheesecake, flourless chocolate cake, and caramel popcorn balls, plus more exotic desserts such as panna cotta, an Italian cooked cream dessert, and crème brulee, custard topped with a caramelized sugar shell. Once plated and tiered in the desired fashion, a dessert bar is as stylish as a traditional tiered cake. The rule of thumb is to provide at least 3 pieces of the bite-sized desserts per person. If you still want to do a cake cutting, never fear. Tomaselli says that a 6" cake can be included with the dessert bar if the bride and groom wants to indulge in the tradition. 14 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

Gowns Second Time Around The wedding gown is perhaps one of the most significant dresses a woman will ever buy. That still holds true for brides who are giving marriage another try. According to the website IDoTakeTwo.com, more than 30 percent of weddings today are “encore weddings”, and these brides want to look even more beautiful the second time (or even third time). Encore wedding dress guidelines can apply to first time brides as well: Your gown should reflect your own personal style. There was a time when second time brides were expected to wear suits or simple dresses and definitely stay away from white, but those days are gone. Before Queen Victoria set the trend with a white lace wedding gown in 1840, most brides got married in their best 24 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

@

dress, regardless of color. The Queen’s wedding photograph was widely seen, and brides who wanted to emulate the royal feel of her wedding opted to copy her style. In the following years white came to symbolize purity, but that tradition has changed and today a white wedding gown is seen simply as a symbol of joy. Still, many encore brides opt for variations of white and even bolder hues. Brides whose first wedding was a simple affair may opt to go big for their second wedding, so anything goes, says Tara Smith, sales associate for Patsy’s Bridal in Salisbury. “The bride whose first wedding was in a courthouse or backyard sometimes wants to ‘do it up’ the second time around. Think lots of bling,

lots of fabric, lots of interest, and unmistakably bride. For whatever reason, some also tend to be bolder in their choices. We recently sold a very dramatic black and white Sophia Tolli wedding gown.” Brides who went big the first time around, with long trains and elaborate veils, may want to simplify this time around. “There are brides who just want something elegant and simple because it is a second wedding. Our lighter sheath wedding dresses and social occasion gowns in ivory, champagne, and an array of off-whites are popular with this end of the spectrum,” Smith says. “Overall, our second wedding brides--in both the second marriage and vow renewal categories and the doing it up and playing it down categories--are the brides concerned with finding gowns that meet their desires but are

also age appropriate.” According to PerfectWeddingDressFinder. com, trains are acceptable for a second time bride, although a shorter length is more appropriate. But again, this is up to the bride. There is some etiquette regarding veils, however. Etiquette expert Peggy Post says encore brides can wear a veil that cascades down the back, particularly in a formal BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

25

ceremony, but they should avoid the more youthful blusher veil. Repeat brides usually don’t go for poufy dresses with extra-long trains and elaborate beading, but often choose slimmer fits with simple adornment. That said, if you’re not the understated type or you didn’t get the billowing chiffon dress the first time, then go for it. It’s still your day, even if it is I Do Déjà vu for you. It may not be your first time, but you deserve to look as glamorous and gorgeous as you feel.

Trends in Floral Design By Anita Todd The poet Park Benjamin wrote that flowers are “love’s truest language”, and that holds as true today as it did when he first wrote those words in 1866. Flowers are perhaps one of the most visible symbols of romance at a wedding. They are a critical design elements and can create a striking and stunning look for the bridal party, as well as your ceremony and reception sites. Professional florists can help you convey the message you want to share with your beloved and guests. Your florist must know your personality and the inspiration of your wedding day to assist you with the floral design choices that will enhance your wedding. To help you with choices, your florist should 38 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

know your personal style, budget, colors and have photos of your ceremony and receptions sites. Whether you’re getting married in a formal ballroom, a private home, the beach, a romantic garden, vineyard, or reception hall, you want flowers that enhance your décor and make your wedding

picture perfect. Coordinate your arrangements, bouquets, and corsages, boutonnieres by color, formality and style- for a look that flows. Jim Gray, owner of The City Florist in Salisbury, says brides still love hand-wrapped bouquets, whether tighter and more controlled or loose garden styled, tied with an assortment of ribbons and trimmed with brooches or bling, and for a rustic feeling, sometimes burlap. Nontraditional brides are only limited by their imaginations, Gray says. “It really depends on the bride and how off the wall she wants to be. It could be as simple as using a strong color to accent the dress color, or flowers designed in groupings, from the use of bling, to feathers, to vintage wedding dress embellishments.”

40 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

For arrangements, the look of submerged flowers in vases is “fading away”, Gray says. There’s more variety than ever before, from overflowing tablescapes to floral trimmed lanterns. You may have dreamed of carrying peonies on your wedding day since you were a little girl, but if you’re marrying in October, that option will be

pricey. Professional florists agree that using in-season flowers will ensure availability and save money. With locations in Salisbury, Ocean Pines, and Laurel, Kitty's Flowers ensures the freshest products by purchasing flowers direct from growers every day of the week. Kitty’s has a large inventory of fresh flowers, and specializes in tropical, contemporary, traditional and high style floral arrangements. Alison Carmody, owner of Flowers by Alison in West Ocean City, known for her “artistic and eclectic floral work. Flowers by Alison has been in business and has kept the Ocean City area “in full bloom” for more than 30 years, designing and delivering fresh flowers daily. If you have your heart set on peonies in the fall, then go for it, but save money by using in season varieties for the bridal party and arrangements.

And consider your venue – an ornate ballroom may not require as many flowers as a plain reception hall, and a garden wedding may need even less. And if your wedding is on or near a holiday such a Christmas or New Year’s, your venue might already be decorated. From crisp, white roses in January, to colorful wildflowers in the spring, flowers do indeed speak the language of love.

Choregraphed Dances By Anita Todd Are you looking to make a major impression at your reception, one that will give your guests a memorable experience and leave them with a super wide smile on their faces? A newer trend at receptions that’s been inspired perhaps by shows such shows as Dancing With the Stars feature surprise dance routines – often with lip synching – performed by members of the wedding party. Sure, the traditional reception dances are always heartwarming. But brides and grooms, grooms and moms, brides and dads, can turn that tradition into something fiercely fun, rather than serious and somber, with choreography-to the surprise and delight of the guests. Log onto YouTube and use keywords such as “choreographed wedding 50 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

@

dance” and you’ll find many fun examples. These routines, a great surprise for the guests, are not usually error free, but that’s all part of the fun of it, of course. It may seem daunting for nonprofessional dancers, but the routines are usually fairly easy enough for an amateur. The process starts simply with the song or mix of songs, says Travis Cowger, DJ and owner of Cowger Entertainment in Pocomoke. “ With the internet now it is easy for a couple to go online and create their own dance mix for dances such as these, but If that is not their strong suite, they can work with their DJ to come up with a dance mix for that special dance,” he says. “A specialty dance task of this magnitude will have to be planned out for proper

execution, as well as picking the dance mix songs, editing the songs together and getting a CD or MP3 track prepared.” Cowger recommends using a pre-made mix of songs rather than a live mix so the dancers can dance to the exact songs and beats that will be played that day. After the music for the dance mix is created, it will be up to the couple or individuals involved to learn a routine and practice, practice, practice. Sure, many people can do the “lawn mower”, the “worm” or the “running man” without any instruction, but if several people are involved and it’s a full routine, a dance coach or instructor is more than helpful. “When I work with a wedding party the first thing I tell them to do is relax and have fun,” says Chrissy Ehrhart, owner of Zenna Studio in Berlin who has coached bridesmaids on choreographed routines. “We work step by step, and as long

as they can keep a beat, most people can learn a simple routine.” Ehrhart, whose teaches Zumba and other popular dances, as well as yoga, says she counsels her wedding “dancers” to take a few deep breaths, clear their heads, and then get to work, because a choreographed dance does take a good bit of practice. You don’t have to have any dance experience, but a good sense of humor and the willingness to be silly is a must. “They should feel free to have fun and not take it too seriously, and if they mess up a move, and they probably will, they should just laugh, smile and keep going.” BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

The Vows By Anita Todd Your wedding vows are perhaps the most important and memorable words you will ever speak, so it’s never too early to decide what you want to hear and say on your special day. There is so much information about writing your own vows for a wedding that it can be a little daunting. Some churches have carefully prescribed rituals and protocols for the wedding ceremony, but there are often many options for couples to consider. “Your wedding vows are the vows you make between you and your spouse only. It is the promise that is made between each other and shared before your guests,” says Eileen Dudley, a non-denominational minister from Ocean City. Dudley says some couples are most comfortable following the

*

traditional “repeat after me” style vows. “There is comfort in that, especially if you are nervous and not comfortable speaking in front of people.” Most officiants offer prewritten vows, but many brides and grooms like to add their own special touches. A combination of the traditional promise along with some personal lighthearted jokes can lighten the mood and bring smiles to your guests, Dudley says. Brides and grooms should remember that they can be overcome by the depth of their emotions when hearing and speaking their wedding vows. “It can be the most beautiful, touching, funny, inspirational sharing of oneself that any one person can do. It can be more emotional than you intend in BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

59

front of an audience.” Officiant Stephen Mathews says the exchange of vows is the heart of the ceremony, so what is said should reflect who you are, who your partner is, and what the relationship that you share means to you. You can also express what marriage means to you, as well as pledge of faithfulness and devotion to your partner. Mathews suggests thinking about how you felt when you first met and fell in love, as well as the moment you realized you wanted to marry your partner. 60 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

Ask yourself how you support each other, what you respect most about your partner, and how has their presence in your life impacted you. Once you’ve considered these questions, write down your answers and then organize those thoughts so that they will convey exactly what you want your partner and your guests to hear. “My own experience is that the best vows talk about your past, your present, and your future. They give you a unique opportunity to make promises and identify ideals upon which

you will build one of the most important relationships of your life,” Mathews says. Couples may also choose to release doves or butterflies with their vows, and many African American couples choose to jump the broom at the end of the ceremony. A practice that has recently become popular is handfasting, which involves binding the hands of the couple with ribbon or cord in a public to symbolize marriage vows. “I think that all of these trends are focused on the idea that couples are looking to make their wedding unique and different. They want the ceremony to be an expression of their personalities,” Mathews says. Regardless of what style of vows are spoken, the ceremony should be memorable expression of the couple’s love.

Ocean Weddings By Anita Todd With a stunning natural backdrop, the beach and bay are possibly the most romantic places to wed on the Eastern Shore. With beautiful beaches in Ocean City, Assateague Island, Fenwick, Bethany, and Rehoboth, and gorgeous bay beaches as well, there’s a lot to choose from. Fortunately, there are several professionals in the area that can make your beach wedding special and effortless. “Over half of our weddings are located at or on the beach,” says Debbie Wayland, owner of Eastern Shore Weddings and Events in Bethany Beach. “Most beaches are public. But each town has different rules and regulations for issuing wedding beach permits. Time of year is super important, most localities will only issue permits in the 66 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

morning or evening during peak season. Make sure your vendors are familiar with the timing issues as setup may need to be incredibly short.” Other details should be considered are parking issues, tide charts, winds, sunset timing and back-up plans in case the weather does not cooperate. “A beach wedding is lovely. tended to, the breathtaking scenery and the stunning atmosphere are worth it,” Wayland says. Another local wedding planner that helps couples with the perfect seaside wedding is Rox Beach Weddings of Ocean City. Rox offers a variety of wedding packages on the Maryland and Delaware Beaches that can include an officiant, as well as full ceremony coordination, photography, 68 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

videography, beach set up and DJ service. They have a long record of planning weddings in the resort, In September, Rox Beach Weddings celebrated its 1,000th wedding in a very special way – after Ashley Ayers and Paul Hall III of Middletown, De were wed on an Ocean City beach, they learned their wedding package was free of charge. “The newlyweds were very

appreciative, especially after a recent accident in the family,” Sean says. “Only a week before the wedding, Ashley’s father was injured in a motorcycle accident. Amazingly, he was able to walk his daughter down the beach with a cast on his leg!” Barefoot Bride’s specialty is also planning an unforgettable exchange of vows on the beach or the bay in Ocean City. Their wedding planners work with couples to find perfect beach cremony site, as well as recommend venues for a large reception or an intimate dinner for two. For a different take on an ocean wedding, consider holding your ceremony at sea. The 65-foot Angler head boat is available for just such an event. “We’ve had quite a few weddings on the boat,” says The Angler’s Heather Gross. 70 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

“The ceremony can be held on the bow or the upper deck. It can accommodate up to 50 people, so it’s for more intimate groups,” Brides and grooms can also wed under the Angler Restaurant tower, or at sunset on the pier. After the ceremony, couples and their guests can enjoy a reception at the Angler Restaurant. Gross says there are many menu options and packages available. Getting married by (or on) the ocean can be romantic, festive, and fun, especially with the help of professionals who can make sure every detail is taken care of so you and your guests can enjoy the sun, sand and cool sea breeze.

Get Ready, Get Set, Go. . .buy a Home! By Frances Sterling, ERA Realtor Get ready, Get set, Go…buy a home! Home buying 101 is not usually taught in school although it probably should be! It is after all, the biggest investment you’re likely to make and the process can be daunting these days. There are several things you can do to make it easier, and building a successful team of real estate professionals will help you immensely. A Realtor can be a great captain for your team. One of the first steps to take when thinking about purchasing a home is to find a Realtor who you like and trust to work with you and guide you. Start by asking homeowners you know for referrals. Attending Open Houses is another way to meet Realtors. Realtors are compensated through commissions that are most often 80 BEACH TO BAY BRIDAL

paid by the seller so the cost to the buyer is minimal and usually paid at settlement. Developing a good working relationship with one Realtor can really help you to streamline your home buying process. Your Realtor can help you to build your home buying team by providing references for mortgage professionals. The loan officer will counsel you through the pre-qualification procedures and then they help you find the loan program that is best suited for you. Your Realtor works closely with your loan officer to help you choose a property that will suit your needs and preferences as well as your budget. Your Realtor can write and interpret the lengthy contract of sale and make sure that you get everything you’re entitled to in the contract. They can help you

negotiate the price, arrange for home inspections and determine the need for repairs, as well as providing references for title and settlement service companies. Buying a home is a team effort and you are certainly the owner/manager of your team but choosing a qualified Realtor as your team captain can help you reach your goal and win the home you’ve been dreaming about!
