01 : Mood : Busy ( Using only 3 elements ) I created the graphic vector shape using Illustartor then used it as a layer mask. The images that reveals through those circles are very intresting. You can see the girl’s eye , a necktie and a man’s chin. In order to make the mood busier , I added noise effect on the background. Which enhanced the ansious feeling of this collage. Both source images in used are Traditional chinese translation version of Japanses novel’ sbook covers.
02 : Mood : Calm ( Using minmum of 10 elements ) Because the rule is to use 10 elements to create a calm mood , I decided to united the elements into a common group. So they dont look messy. I used the same background , because I wanted to chalange my self in controling different mood in a image. This collage uses similar techinic as the first one. The shape of the face came from a source image found online. The red image is the book cover of Nobuyoshi Araki’s 天才アラーキー 写真ノ愛・情.
03 : Pattern The source image on the right is the Subway Map in Tokyo. It is overlayed on top of a page in the Big Issue magazine Taiwan. It created some dreamy neon colours that could reflect the splendid night life in Tokyo. These two images overlayed , protrays a composition that is a little bit dazzling.
04 : Including Text This collage contains eight souce images. With the cover page of the Big Issue magazine Taiwan as background. A magazin artical named : BELIEVE IS THE ONLY MAGINC IN FILMS. In the upper left corner. A badge from Taiwan’s gay pride event. Book cover of Lecture on Unethical Education at the lower right. Some protaits of the judges for an exhibition in red. And some illustation in the middle. From book over of Lolita and Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de.

05 : Including Drawing or Illustartion I really love the book cover of the Lecture on Unethical Education. The texture of the background text is beautiful. Those text blend in smoothly with the black plain background when looking from a distance. They are only legible when foucesed ina closer distence. These text suggest the topic of each chapter in the book. For example : We should pay no respect to teachers , we ought to betray friends and we shall exchange our lover...
06 : Reflective ( Personal Choice ) The last collage exercise was a personal choice , I name the topic “ Reflective�. As many collage artist that I have researched uses collage to relecte improtant event or the situation of the genration. With the butterfly from the book Lolita as the main subject. The Lecture on Unethical Eduacation as background. And the text SUBWAY MAP to combine them together. I aim to convery a situation where a soul labled to be perverted , serching through the ruls of morality trying to find a sense of belonging. But are still traped inside the Subway built for the major public. And still trapted in a glass wall to be viewed and criticized.
Accidental Alphabet This is an exercise of finding the 26 alphabets in our surrounding area. Practicing to observing the world in a different angle. Some letter are fairly easy to find , for example a basic circle --- O and a cross --- X. Some of the most difficult ones are K , G and Z. I am interested in Typography , mainly in Chinese typography. But through this exercise , we are reminded that inspiration can appear in anywhere. Even the street that you are most familiar with. Every alphabet has its own rules , and must maintain the minimum characteristic and correct direction in order to be legible. The four in the adjacent page are my favorite.

Chinese Typography - Taiwan 臺 This is the chinese character that represent Taiwan , recently I found my interested in chinese typography. I have started learning the basic theory behind designing typography. But never practically practiced. This is my first attempt. It isn't anywhere near good , but it's the first step. When designing and researching , the thought of expressing my homesickness came up. So I included many elements that is related to my personal memories from home. For example an airplane leading the whole character , and bus number 287 is the bus I take most frequently.

Final Evaluation My strongest work in the viscom rotation was the digital collages , because it allows me to use the collection of poster and magazines that I have been collecting for years. And the practice allows us to practice with controlling the mood of a imagery. The weakest work was the accidental alphabet , because the result seems like the work is produced only because it was a seated task. I didn't make the effort to embed my own style in them. For foundation year , it is important for me to experiment with style and eventually start developing a style of my own. Currently I am exploring a style of objects with white backgrounds. The typography design exercise gave me the opportunity to make my first attempt in chinese typography design. And the screen printing experiment introduced a different way of combining hand made art with digital. A skill that I must improve is the communication and teamwork skill. The hand drawn animation exercise was an exciting event. But due to personal reasons , I wouldn't stay in the room and focus properly. This is a shame , I wish I can find the confidence to conquer this fear completely. After all , I do enjoy the Viscom rotation. When choosing the final pathway for this year, viscom will definitely be in my choice.
