Thanks for taking the time to stop by and ask questions during the Open House on Monday and Tuesday. If you have any other questions or something else comes up, please don't hesitate to shoot me an email and I'll address them in this column. One of the questions that came up was about fines and bonds. In the past, we used bonds as part of the sanctioning process. Bonds are intended to be a financial deterrent for residents who are found responsible in the conduct process. The resident is notified of the possible charge and the bond is cashed if there are any additional violations. Fines were collected when residents did not complete their educational sanctions. We accumulated over $20,000 in fines and bonds last year. Straight up. While this is great for the First Year Experience Fund, it demonstrates that financial penalties don't serve as a deterrent or are an effective tool for addressing those found responsible for ResRule violations. This year our focus is on meetings and conversations. Growing the Residence Conduct Office provides us support for following up with residents and addressing residents who fail to comply rather than ticking a box and adding a charge to a SOLUS account. We'l continue to work on this together to ensure that we're all helping to develop positive communities where residents are held accountable for their actions. Conduct Corner is a reoccurring feature. Please send your comments and questions to nicky.renault@queensu.ca This is your space to get some of the answers and clarifications you might need.

OACUHO RESIDENCE LIFE CONFERENCE What is it? • The Residence Life Conference is a weekend-long conference (November 10 -12, 2017) that promotes the best practices of student staff from post-secondary institutions across Ontario, with Residence Life as the primary focus. Student staff members are given the opportunity to present and participate in a variety of sessions in traditional 50-minute style presentations. There is also an opportunity to prepare and showcase a passive display. This year’s conference is being hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. Why should I attend? There are many aspects being a residence staff member, that shape you who are and offers areas of development. These development opportunities are abundant at the conference, whether this is your first time at the conference, or if you are returning. The program learning themes provides some guidance in what opportunities you would like to create for delegates or attend to, depending on how you want to develop. Program Themes: • Be Diverse • Be Pro • Be Authentic • Be Balanced • Be Community What do these themes mean? What could I plan and put my own spin on? Head to https://brocku.ca/rlc2017/main/educational-programming/program-proposal/ For more info on the themes, and important resources on writing your program proposal! Okay, I’m interested – what do I do next? • Start working on your proposal! Brainstorm some ideas, or reflect on successful programs you’ve run in the past that you’d like to share with student staff members from other institutions! • Attend Stu and & Wes’ workshop on developing your program proposal further! • Have questions ahead of the workshop? Email Stu (sg168@queensu.ca) and Wes (wef@queensu.ca)! Proposal Timeline • Program Submissions Open - September 11 • Writing a program proposal / Conference Q&A session – September 20 6pm, Leggett 1011 • Program Submissions to Stu and Wes for feedback due Sept. 27, to be returned by Sept. 29 • Program Submissions Due to Brock University – October 2 • Program Acceptances Released – October 23
