DUE BY 9AM ON: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4TH

Queen’s Health Outreach (QHO) would like to invite you and your first years to have an engaging lesson and discussion about mental, sexual, and physical health in your residence! QHO is a completely student-run NGO that seeks to promote health education to students both here on campus, domestically, and internationally in five initiatives including Kingston, Northern Canada, Belize, Guyana, and Kenya. Since many students come from backgrounds with differing degrees of sexual and mental health knowledge, it is vital to get our new incoming class all on the same page. QHO is offering you and your floor close-knit, fun, and educational talks that can cover many topics anywhere from STIs and condom demonstrations to self-care and mental health stigma. We hope that your students would gain a better understanding of important health concepts in casual, yet inciting manner! We think it would be an amazing opportunity to talk about these important issues in a positive light as well as have new students see all the resources available to them. If interested or you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at outreach@qho.ca Sincerely, John Thomson & Christopher Lanz Campus Outreach Directors outreach@qho.ca http://www.qho.ca

Our names are Carolina Navas and Mia Berloni and we are the Outreach Coordinators for the Peer Support Centre (PSC). The PSC is a confidential non-judgmental drop in centre on campus that provides peer-based support and resource referral. As first year students, it can be quite overwhelming to hear about all of the resources on campus so, the PSC is a great first point of contact! We are located in the lower level of the JDUC in rooms 34, and 26 (down the hallway right past the P&CC, the rooms are right next to each other). We are open 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm. We would love the opportunity to come in and present to your floor about different topics affecting your students including, but not limited to, mental health, academics, sexual violence, sexual health, consent and discrimination. These are important topics that need to be discussed, especially within the first couple months of being on campus. We really want to touch on the fact that the Peer Support Centre is a diverse and safe space for all students to come into, no matter what the issue and we can be a source of support for them. Additionally, we would be available to provide interactive workshops on how to support a friend, how to recognize signs of burnout in yourself and how to self care if this happens. Lastly, we would also like to add that we are very open and interested in tailoring a presentation for your floor, however you would like to see that, and partnering with any other relevant groups on campus you would also like to see (QHO, SHRC, MHAC etc.). outreach@ams.queensu.ca

STUDY UPDATE

Leadership Training

...with Kyle Brykman

Kyle Brykman’s Leadership Effectiveness Training Study will now be held on Thursday November 2nd (5:30-7:00pm) and Saturday November 4th (2:00-3:30pm) in Levana Room, Ban Righ. As a reminder, the purpose of Kyle’s training study is to teach Don’s practical strategies to create a safer and more inclusive residence environment. This training is based on principles of organizational psychology, so it is especially valuable for Dons who are eager to learn applied leadership skills for their future careers. If you are interested in participating, but did not sign up during Orientation-week (when the training was scheduled for Sept 27/28), please reach out to Kyle ASAP to register (k.brykman@queensu.ca). We would appreciate your help participating in his study, which involves completing a brief survey before the training and forwarding a study invitation to your residents. Even if you do not to participate in the training, you are still eligible to participate in the study (and in exchange you will be entered into a draw for two $50 gift cards to the Campus Bookstore). Queen’s Residence Life is collaborating with Kyle on this fantastic training study and strongly encourage all Dons to participate in the training and study!
