Self promotion

01

A brief created to develop a body of self-promotional work, considering yourself as a brand and as a Fashion Communicator and Promoter within the broader Fashion landscape. This section contains promotional work about my self including business cards and logos, CV and online portfolios.

Business CarD INSPIRATION:

I initially began my business card inspiration by creating a board on pinterest where I collated lots of different ideas. To further this I began gathering physical business cards from stores and restaurants so I could get an idea of feel, weight and paper style. I also began looking at Editorial Designs by Cath Caldwell and Yolanda Zappaterra and How to Create a Portfolio and Get Hired by Fig Taylor to help get extra guidance and understanding of business card designs.

iNTIAL iDEAS AND pLANNING:

To spark off some ideas and designs I began experimenting with plain business cards and letraset. This allowed me to experiment with a number of different ideas, where to place my text, what type of text to use, the style of my logo which lead me to decide on my MRS logo. I also experimented with different card colours and boarders to inspire a design. I then completed further research into different ways of presenting text and was drawn towards embossing. I took this style and my MRS logo and began planning.

When it comes to my personality and the type of individual I am, I’m very organised with a hint of OCD. This is constantly reflected in my work with my need for everything to be aligned and structured. I chose to use my initials as my logo as its a play on words - a combination of my initials and a title, therefore will work when you put it in front of another word. I chose Folighten No06 as its structured and sophisticated with a touch of detail between the R and S which reflects my creative personality and flair. The main concept of my business card is embossing, the MRS is to be embossed onto my business card with a complete crisp white finish. This creates a sophisticated, clean look yet the highlights my love for creativity and design. The back features my contact details and websites such as my blog and portfolio. This is set off to the right to prevent conflict with the deboss on the reverse side of the card. I chose a simple font - Helvetica as this is legible yet professional and contrasts nicely with the front. I’ve chosen to use a fluorescent orange as the type colour as this shows my knowledge for todays creative industry as well as making it distinctive and unique.

design recipe IN CONTEXT:

This is my logo used in context. I’ve overlaid my design onto a number of stationary items such as a letter head, business card and pen. For the digital platforms such as the iPad and iPhone my logo would be simple monochrome text as its more attractive to display online rather than embossing. With my letter head and envelopes I’d use clean white crisp embossing which is consistent with my business cards.

ONLINE PORTFOLIO:

I chose cargocollective as my platform for my online portfolio as it has more of a professional appearance and allows you to edit the portfolio to suit you without advert overload. The platform provides a wide range of layouts and structures giving you a variety of choice. Cargo also gives you the ability to embed websites within your projects making it easier for readers to access the content. I chose a simple, structured layout (Warhol) which allows you to create thumbnails for your projects that take you to the content. This complies with my self promotion as its simplistic with a monochrome colour palette. I’ve adapted my logo throughout my self promotion to ensure everything is consistent and ties in together.

:SCENESNEY During summer I completed a couple of days work experience, whilst working my part time job and visiting galleries. I was approached at the beginning of summer by a personal stylist in John Lewis who began talking to me and offered me working experience with JL. During this time I assisted within the personal styling sector which included understanding the consumer, following guides to establish individuals colour palettes and shapes and dressing for different occasions such as weddings, graduations and a full winter wardrobe. I was then given the opportunity to assist the merchandising team which included re dressing the clothing departments, understand the visual merchandising of specific John Lewis brands such as KIN and understanding marketing techniques such as the visual triangle. Before the time was over I also got the opportunity to converse with head office over price match and discounts. For a part time job I work for the luxury leather company Osprey based in St Albans, which entailed conversing with customers within an outlet store, cafe and home wear full price store. As a result of working there for two years I was given the opportunity to work across stores in Hertfordshire such as Radlett and the flagship store in London. To help develop interest and knowledge within the art industry I visited a number of galleries, one being the V&A Shoes: Pleasure and Pain exhibition. This featured iconic shoes from the 18th century up until modern day designed by individuals as well as internationally renowned designers. I also visited the Serpentine Gallery, where a different piece of architecture is erected each year.

LORD WHITNEY

05

Lord Whitney are a company that specialises in Art Direction, Set Design and Creative Direction. During our first module they visited us for a week where we engaged in a set design project.

Artist Inspiration:

Miles Aldridge - ‘I just want you to love me’

The Gif: http://gifmaker.cc/PlayGIFAnimation.php?folder=20151210199PA3LN6V0lFIEbKZzPoC5T&file=output_QU5hE1.gif&music=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dl7xZcT-QglI&start=4

Our Idea: For this task we were given a filter for which we had to create a set based around. Our filter was Video: to wear - Iron, meaning we had to create a video featuring iron related content worn by or surrounding the model. We brainstormed the lexical field of ‘iron’ - Fe, the compound, iron in foods such as red meat and then house work and laundry - and particularly liked the idea of running with the theme of a 1950s house wife. Inspired by Miles Aldridge, we created colourful fun props that would allow us to show a housewife acting “mischievously” in a playful way such as lying on the floor with a Martini glass in one hand and laughing down the phone with the other. She’s also surrounded by Laundry and dirty dishes stacked up in the sink. There is no iron in sight. We took a selection of photos, edited them and combined them using a GIF animation in order to create the film, where the house wife throws her head back with laughter in a playful manor to an accompanying 1950s soundtrack.

Seminar Work

06

Extra work completed within university seminars to help develop ideas and creative skills. This section contains monoprinting and life drawing.

MONOPRINTING: During this module we were given the opportunity to take part in creative tasks such as monoprinting to help broaden our creative skills. We paired up and begin brainstorming ideas for your partners ‘design’ and a potential idea that could be used within their self promotion. I paired up with someone with the Initials SP, I began to write things down that represented her and her interests, one being literature. This gave me the idea to incorporate text into the print. I created a P out of cardboard and layered a block of magazine text over the top to represent her love of literature. I then used white paint and repeatedly printed S 5 times to create a background. This also gave a magazine, repeated text effect.

Life Drawing: We also got the opportunity to take part in life drawing. Life drawing isn’t new to me as I was required to do it during A-Level Art however there’s always more to learn. During this session we took on different styles of drawing from 2 minutes to 20 minutes using a variety of materials and equipment. We also had the chance to draw our model in a variety of different poses from standing to sitting, twisted to kneeling. I chose to overlap my drawings to give them more of an interesting look and feel. I also used colours that would tone well together so the images worked as one. I also experimented with shadow and using coloured pens to create this effect.
