he Tahitian team Shell Va`a won the 64th annual Molokai Hoe, making it their 10th year taking first place in the famed race across Molokai's Ka`iwi Channel spanning nearly 40 miles. They completed the race in a time of four hours 49 minutes 17 seconds, with 93 other teams completing the

Eighty Years Young
Hole in One
By Father Pat Killilea, St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa She was a normal, lively, fun-loving girl doing what nine-year-old girls do in the community of Haena on the spectacular north coast of the island of Kauai. It was 7:30 a.m. on the morning of April 1, 1946 when the first wave of the tsunami struck unexpectedly. Ivy Laamea and her family escaped that first tidal assault and headed for her grandmother's house. Unfortunately they had to turn back because their path was blocked by the tidal water. They then went to a nearby Mormon church to find shelter. However, they found the church's windows and doors securely locked. So they gathered outside and joined hands, making a circle in prayer. Then the devastating second wave came crashing in with awesome and deadly power carrying her little siblings away. What a terrible moment it was for her and her family. Thank the Lord that Ivy herself could swim like a mermaid and, after some terrifying minutes and a heroic struggle, she was able to swim to safety. Ivy Laamea was born on Oct. 2, 1936 in Haena, the most northern community on Kauai's north shore, not far from Hanalei where the famous Na Pali Coast begins. She loved to play basket-

ball and volleyball as she herself has told me, and I do not doubt that she played with Olympic determination and tenacity. Having been diagnosed with Hansen's disease while in the flower of her young womanhood, she arrived in Kalaupapa settlement in 1956. Over the years, she has worked in various roles in this settlement, as an attendant for an airline at the Kalaupapa Airport and more recently in the Kalaupapa store as well as at the nearby gas station. In Kalaupapa, she met and married the love of her life, the "Boogie" man, Clarence "Boogie" Kahilihiwa and they have lived in marital bliss ever since. On Sunday Oct. 2, Ivy reached the venerable age of 80 and is still full of life and full of humor and laughter. So it was that we celebrated with her last night at McVeigh Hall which, in the early days of her years here, was the dining hall for many residents in the settlement. Before we took our seats for dinner, Zianna, the supervisor of our store, crowned our honoree as Queen for the evening. Then, after a prayer of blessing, we did what we all do best. We partook of a sumptuous celebration meal. Ivy, this gentle lady, has outlived the many tsunamis of life and we rejoice that she lives on in our midst.
while their experiences may be different, Molokai Hoe is an event that unites the global paddling community to face the same challenges and victories -whether finishing in four hours or in eight hours. This year, Molokai men split up, joining other Hawaii crews to complete the crossing. Many paddlers also joined in the Festivals of Aloha parade on Saturday, as a gesture of thanking the community for their support in hosting the races each year.

Krazy For Kolea Kontest Winners Nene O Molokai News Release George Mordant was the first to report the return of the kolea at Home Pumehana on Aug. 1, marking the beginning of the fall migration of the Pacific Golden Plover (Pluvialis fulva). He earned a Kolea Research Hawaii T-shirt from the Hawaii Audubon Society and a gift certificate for one scoop of ice cream at Kamoi Snack-N-Go for winning the 19th annual Krazy for Kolea Kontest. The kolea is a swift flying shorebird and has been clocked migrating at 118 miles per hour, although an average of 56 to 60 miles mph is more typical. Females are first to leave breeding grounds in Alaska, with adult males arriving by the end of August and juveniles in October. The species is long-lived (more than 25 years), and birds annually return to the same territory on winter grounds. Kolea on their northern migration may have aided ancient navigators with the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands, and the bird figured prominently in Hawaiian folklore: it was considered to be the embodiment of the

The second place kolea was observed in Puko`o by Mia Evans on Aug. 3, and Hunter Yuen won third place for reporting the Aug. 4 return of the kolea at Kilohana School. Other winners are Joe Yerhot (fourth place), George Barbour (fifth place), and Helen VonTempsky. Mahalo for participating in the Krazy For Kolea Kontest. All winners call Arleone at 5535992 to receive your Kamoi Snack-N-Go ice cream gift certificate, and have a great treat with your kolea!

he Molokai High School Girls Volleyball team swept Lanai last weekend at The Barn to improve their record to 8-2 on the season and secured the number two seed in the MIL Tournament coming up on Oct. 19 on Lanai. The Lady Farmers have won eight in a row and are 6-0 at The Barn this season. Their only 2 losses came early in the season at number one seeded Hana. Molokai won last Friday 3-0, which was Senior Night for Brooke Keliihoomalu and Precious Rawlins, 25-14, 25-13, and 25-22. Saturday was also a 3-0 sweep with scores of 25-21, 25-10, and 25-20. Head Coach Mahea Rawlins was happy with the team's play. “Senior Night went very well and our seniors did a very good job this past weekend,”she said. “We worked together and stayed focused and playing home here at 'Da Barn' for past three games have given our team positive energy and boosted their confidence going into the MIL tournament.” Senior captain Precious Rawlins said doing well at home was good but now they have to take it on the road to MILs on Lanai.
“This past weekend’s game has been a great experience knowing that we won all of our home games but now we have to bring it back on the road,” she said. “We are still working hard and working towards our goals but we haven't reached our peeking point and we make progress each day." Senior captain Keliihoomalu is also looking forward to the MIL Tournament. “I'm extremely proud of my entire team for working to get these last two season wins," she said. "We've grown a lot from the beginning of season, yet I feel there's always room for improvement. Heading to the MIL tournament is exciting for us being that we've come so far, and we cannot to see what more we can do together.” Two teams will represent the MIL at the state tournament on Oahu on Oct. 26 so a victory in the first round at the tournament will secure at state spot for the Lady Farmers. Mahea Rawlins has her team ready for that opportunity. “I am very proud of our team for making it this far," she said. "Now we just have to pass one more game in MIL playoff to make it to state tournament. Go Lady Farmers!”

Head Coach Mike Kahale was happy with his team’s performance on the road at their rival Seabury. “I was very pleased with our balance on offense," he said. "We took the opportunity to throw the ball more as we expected that Seabury would bring extra guys up defensively to stop the run.” Kahale also praised Dudoit-Tabilangan. “Our quarterback, Jayden DudoitTabilangan gives us a lot options because he is so mobile. If our guys are not open, he can run the ball and use his speed to get us some yards.” Senior free safety and wide receiver Bicoy and his teammates were looking forward to this game but he said he understands the team will have to keep preparing for the playoffs. “The game against Seabury is always one to look forward to," said Bicoy. "Ev-
erybody played hard and I'm proud of the younger guys on our team who stepped up. Our big boys up front also did an awesome job. Seabury is a good team and played hard, but we came out victorious. Now we get back to work and prepare for our next game.” Kahale praised his players and their growth on the team. “This game required some of our younger guys to step on both sides of the ball," he explained. "Freshman Puaa-Aki filled in nicely as one of our starting backs and Landen Kaneakua played big for us at corner in our secondary. Davis-Mendija ran the ball well and Bicoy caught some nice long passes from Jayden. A lot of credit goes to our offensive line as they provided good pass protection and opened up some big holes for our backs.” Seabury will host Lanai in the other semi-final game and the MIL eight man championship is at War Memorial Stadium on Maui on Oct. 27. "The harder you work for something, the greater you'll feel when you achieve it!" said Dudoit-Tabilangan.

Correction A DHHL news release in last week's Dispatch incorrectly stated that Conrad "Zuzu" Aquino spent the last 10 years living in Molokai's remote north shore valley of Wailau. He said he actually lived in Wailau in the 70s and came out in the 90s. He was then employed by Adolph Helm in Kawela Plantation for 10 years, and has worked for Molokai Ranch for 16 years.

Veterans Corner Military tattoos
By Jesse Church events. The art of tattooing is an old form of expression that anthologists say dates back to 4000 B.C. Back then, tattoos were used for a wide range of purposes like identification or experiences one has witnessed, and for thousands of years, warriors used it to signify status and reputation. The amazing thing to me is how tattoos have been able to keep their popularization to the general population and the military. Overall, tattoos are more frequently seen on the bodies of military personnel, and I believe that the military is what has kept tattoos so very popular over the centuries. In this day and age, the general public has fallen in love with the tattoo, especially women. There are many women sporting tattoos today as you well know, and I am truly bewildered why so many women would submit themselves to a tattoo artist's needle, there was a time when women were squeamish about things like that, but they do not show it as they did in the past. So I asked 20 women on Molokai that have tattoos why they got them. Eight said it was peer pressure, six said they were partying and it was a spur of the moment thing, three said they were young and foolish, two said their boyfriend wanted them to get a tattoo, and one said she liked tattoos. I asked 15 nonveteran men with tattoos why they got them and I heard their reasons, but the one thing that stood out was all 15 men
said it was the macho thing to do, that after high school graduation, they went with their friends and got tattooed. Military tattoos are different; many get tattooed because their father did, or to show the world they are proud to serve. A lot of military tattoos are a way to remember a battle or people you fought with, and gave their life for us. Very few people come out of military service without a tattoo or two; I myself have two military tattoos. I asked 25 veterans who all have tattoos, why? The older veterans who fought in Korea and Vietnam, reasoned that if it was good enough for their fathers who fought in World War II, it was good enough for them, or was a family tradition, or both. Thirteen cited that reason, six veterans said they were proud to have served their country, and their tattoos were mostly the branch of service that they served in. Six veterans said that after seeing action in combat they wanted to show that they were a part of a particular battle or to memorialize friends that gave their lives. There are many reason to have a tattoo, and in my mind there is no better way to do, than pay homage to friends who gave their last full measure of devotion. Please keep your calls coming with your election thought, or anything else you would like to talk about, Call old Jesse at 553-3323. I would like to thank the 65 people I spoke with about tattoos, Mahalo. Remember old Jesse loves Molokai and all its people, every man, women, and child from the heart. Aloha and Mahalo.

Letters & Announcements
Vision for Molokai I want to again thank all of the people who I met while visiting a couple of weekends ago. I will plan on being on Molokai more often after the election. I would like to establish an office in Kaunakakai, plus expand remote testimony from residents so as not to require traveling to Oahu. Residents of Molokai need to be able to testify on all issues and items which they are affected by, especially being able to add their comments to each and every committee and subcommittee. Molokai is challenged by an incredible and unacceptable lack of affordable accommodations, especially for rent. There is talk of instituting some form of rent control, which has been quite successful in other communities. Perhaps it is time to consider. We need to start this discussion amongst those residing on Molokai. The talk throughout the County, and especially our district, is the need to expand sustainable farming and securing sufficient and inexpensive access to water. With hemp coming on line in Hawaii, it is one crop which needs to be looked at. We don't, of course, want to only do mono crops, which is what
was so non-sustainable on the island of Maui. We must immediately deal with both food sovereignty, where the right of our community to healthy and culturally appropriate food, sustain-ably produced while being environmentally sensitive to the land, is of the utmost importance, plus food security, since we import most of our food. We must have a reliable sources and access to a sufficient amount of nutritious, affordable food. We must have a legislator representing us with the critical thinking to take on these challenges and the vision to put forth beneficial proposals. I can not do it alone. I need all of the residents on Molokai, those who will vote for me next month and those who will not, to step up to the plate and share what are your needs, concerns, wants and desires for not only yourself, but your children and their children. Visit my website at friendsofnikhilananda.com/, email nikhilananda@ hawaiiantel.net, or call me at 808-572USUS(8787), for more info. Nick Nikhilananda

The continuing saga of Richard, owner of Makani Kai Air, and his chowder head marketing guy, P.J. PJ:
Hey boss, I’ve got a great idea…
RICHARD:
Oh boy…
PJ:
You know how our competitor has corporate accounts that allow folks to bring two bags free?
RICHARD:
Sure, and they charge $30 more for their tickets.
PJ:
Precisely. We could make our everyday fare $200 and let people bring up to 10 bags free
RICHARD:
Where did I go wrong with you?
PJ:
Or charge $230 for a ticket and the customer would get 10 free bags plus dinner and a movie…
RICHARD:
You’re fired.
PJ:
Or charge $500 and throw in a trip to ‘Vegas…
