GATEMEGLING

STREET MEDIATION

Følelsene som oppstår i en konflikt er gjerne vanskelige å håndtere. Da kan det være lett å ty til vold, enten fysisk eller psykisk. I gatemegling trener ungdom på å gjenkjenne og uttrykke følelser og behov som oppstår i konflikter. Med lek, øvelser og rollespill utforsker deltakerne både de negative sidene og de positive mulighetene som ligger i konflikter.

Grunntanken for Røde Kors gatemegling er at det er de unge selv som er best egnet til å endre det som skaper utrygghet i miljøene deres. Gjennom tre påbyggende verksteder rustes de til å håndtere egne og andres konflikter: 1. På Konfliktverkstedet øver deltakerne på å mestre egne konflikter.

2. På Meglingsverkstedet lærer deltagerne å megle i andres konflikter. Som sertifiserte gatemeglere blir ungdommene ressurspersoner «på gata» i sine egne miljøer.

3. På Instruktørverkstedet blir deltakerne kvalifiserte som ungdomsinstruktører som leder konfliktverkstedene sammen med voksne instruktører.

Gatemegling er voldsforbyggende ettersom ungdom settes i stand til å håndtere konflikter på lavt nivå før de eskalerer til voldsbruk og negative gruppemotsetninger.

I mer omfattende konflikter der ungdom er involvert, vil også voksne frivillige kunne tilby forsoningsprosesser.

Røde Kors gatemegling samarbeider med mange forskjellige lokale aktører som fritids­klubber, skole, utekontakt, politi, konfliktråd og flyktningmottak.

I Røde Kors gatemegling får ungdom redskaper til å kommunisere i stedet for å slå. Som gatemeglere blir de også positive endringsagenter i sine egne miljøer.

Red Cross Street Mediation provides young people with tools to help them communicate rather than fight. As street mediators, they also become agents for positive change in their own environments.

The feelings that arise in a conflict situation are often difficult to deal with. This means that it can be easy to choose violence – either physical or psychological – as the answer. The Street Mediation programme is intended to teach young people to recognise and express needs and feelings that arise in conflict situations. Games, exercises and role play are used to help participants explore both the negative aspects and the positive options that exist in conflicts.

The fundamental concept behind Red Cross Street Mediation is that the young people themselves are best placed to change whatever is making waves in their own environments. Three inter-related workshops are used to equip young people with the tools they need to deal with their own and others’ conflicts: 1. At the Conflict Workshop, participants practise resolving their own conflicts.

2. At the Mediation Workshop, participants learn how to mediate in other people’s conflicts.

As certified street mediators, the young people become important resources “on the street” in their own environments.

3. At the Instructor Workshop, participants qualify as youth instructors and can then help adult instructors to run the conflict workshops.

Street Mediation helps prevent violence because young people are equipped to deal with conflicts at an early stage, i.e. before they escalate into actual violence and negative group antagonism. In more comprehensive conflicts involving young people, adult volunteers are available to help with reconciliation processes.

The Red Cross Street Mediation programme works closely with a variety of local players such as youth clubs, schools, outreach organisations, the police, conflict councils, and refugee reception centres.
