Skipsrevyen congratulates «Future of the Fjords» as Ship of The Year
I
found myself on board «Future of the Fjords» in the Nærøyfjorden. The ship travelled at 19 knots. Quiet. Electric propulsion. Zero emissions. This is the ship of the future, in the fjords of the future The ship is "knitted" with carbon fiber, it was drawn on a napkin and everyone said it was not possible to build, but they did it anyway. The story of the new carbon fiber ship from Brødrene Aa in Hyen is almost as wonderful as the ship itself.
Full electric propulsion, zero emissions "When we entered the first contract, we demanded full electric power and zero emissions," says Rolf Sandvik, director of The Fjords DA to Skipsrevyen. The shipping company operates in, among others, Lysefjorden, Nærøyfjorden, Geirangerfjorden and Hjørundfjorden and have 11 vessels in the fleet. The yard was concerned. Would it be possible? "They said they would try. We had lunch and signed the contract afterwards and here we are. It turned out that it was possible, Sandvik says laughing. It was the sister ship «Vision of the Fjords» which was our "strategy document," says Sandvik. It was the ship that first got the unique design and the most recent environmental technology on board.
Designed on a napkin The ship was drawn on a napkin in a hotel room in Poland by the ship designer Torstein
Aa, and got the unique exterior design where the tourists have much bigger outside space to enjoy the beautiful fjord nature. The inspiration of the design was taken from the roads at Eikefjord, and the way they wandered across the western countries. The messurements were given by the largest constructionhall in the shipyard in Hyen. Had it been a little smaller inside the ship, it would not have been possible. Then there would not have been enough room left inside for the boardhouse and for passengers.
A knitted ship «Future of the Fjords» is knitted. It was Johan Sunde in Devold who discovered out that the carbon fiber could be knitted. In Devold they knitted sweaters. The carbon fiber came in bundles that looked like yarns. He was aware of that. What if ships could also be knitted? This is just one of the amazing innovations behind the «Future of the Fjords»
Innovations "I am proud, admits Tor Øivin Aa. We consider ourselves to be the world's best speedboat builders, but have never received any prices for it. Until these boats came along and make clean sweeps. «Vision of the Fjords», won the prestigious award "Ship of the Year," and has received several national and international awards and awards. The ship is fully electrically powered by Westcon's ba-
ttery power. Propeller systems and gear are quiet and delivered by Servogear. "On which other ships can you hear the sounds of the nature when on board. The wind, the waterfalls, the waves and the birds singing? It gives a truly unique feeling of experiencing the fjord landscape, says Sandvik from The Fjords. Now the plan is to replace more of the company's older ships with new technology. As far as Skipsrevyen knows, the company is already in dialogue with the shipyard about several new builds.
The international maritime press is impressed "It is Norway and Norwegian technology that leads the world in environmentally friendly technology in the maritime sector, there is no doubt about that at all, says the meritorious editor Alan Thorpe from London. He is full of praise for «Future of the Fjords» and Norwegian innovation. “Nobody can compete with Norway's position and Norwegian shipyard within this field, as it is today, says Thorpe. Not even close. While others are dealing with hybrid solutions and LNG, Norway has gone all the way. It is nothing less than impressive, " he says to Skipsreven.

Torbjørn Røe Isaksen
Minister of Trade and Industry
Making blue growth green Sustainable use of the ocean is a top priority for Norway. We need to move the maritime industry in the right direction. A greener direction.
W
e believe that responsible use is the best protection. And we believe that blue growth can be green: A competitive and prosperous industry can coexist with a healthy marine environment. We have to combat illegal fishing, plastic pollution and climate change. Meanwhile, we need to provide healthy food, clean energy and transport, and good jobs for a growing world population. We can all use the ocean even smarter than we do today. The maritime industry is indeed part of the solution to these global challenges. We need cleaner ships, greener shipping infrastructure and greener and smarter operations. The focus on emissions and fuel costs is here to stay. We are also about to enter the autonomous shipping revolution. Our companies are already taking the lead, proving that greener shipping is better business.

We have long and proud maritime traditions in Norway. Today, our maritime sector is among the most innovative in the world. And the past can only be overcome by the future. The winners of the green revolution will surely be winners of the 21st century global economy. The maritime industry plays a key role in the development of the other ocean industries: in aquaculture, with new vessels and offshore fish farms; in the transport and tourist industry, with new and greener vessels; and in the development of greener energy and offshore wind. Surely, a greener maritime sector is a key step towards a greener future. For Norway, and the whole planet.

Takes green tourism one step further Just as its sistership, «Future of The Fjords» can now call itself, Ship of the Year.
Helge Martin Markussen helge@skipsrevyen.no
O
n April 19th 2018, «Future of the Fjords» was handed over from Brødrene Aa to The Fjords. The electric passenger catamaran is the yards build-number 291. The hull is designed by Paradis Nautica AS and Brødrene Aa AS. The yard also has the design of the overlay.
«Future of the Fjords» takes the concept of green fjord tourism one step further. The ship can accommodate as many as 400 passengers on its trips in and out of the world heritage fjord, Nærøyfjorden, completely free of emissions for its owners The Fjords.
Sisters, but not twins The sistership, «Vision of the Fjords» won the same price in 2016. However, there is one big difference between the two ships.
While «Vision of the Fjords» has hybrid operations, «Future of the Fjords» is 100% electric. It cost more to develop the fully electric vessel, but Enova have contributed with 17.8 million kroners. The total price tag on «Future of the Fjords» ended up more than 50 million kroners higher than «Vision of the Fjords»

SHIP OF THE YEAR It is estimated that the boat can last for more than two hours on one load, depending on how much engine power is being used. A charging station, called PowerDock, stands at both ends of the fjord. The PowerDock is built in fiberglass and measures 40 x 5 meters. It houses a 2.4 MWh battery pack. The innovative solution makes it possible to recharge «Future of the Fjords» in 20 minutes. The liquid battery charger allows longer battery lifespan and fast charging. The PowerDock also takes care of greywater and blackwater, wich makes the vessels owned by The Fjords the only passenger ships that doesn’t release wastewater directly into the fjords where it operates. This solution is also mentioned by the jury in why «Future of the Fjords» won the prestigious award.

- We chose to look at the big picture, and the total solution of the innovation. The PowerDock was part of what tipped the scale for the winner, says Asle Strønen, the jury's secretary to Skipsrevyen.
Propulsion The two main engines of 450 kW each is delivered by Ramme. Servogear has supplied the Ecoflow propulsion system, and the HD 220 reduction gear. Sleipner Motor has delivered two SAC350 bow thrusters and two SAC450 aft thrusters. The 1800 kWh battery pack is provided by Nidec / ZEM. Supplier of the e-SEAMatic electrical propulsion system is Westcon Power & Automation AS. Landor Larsen AS and Brødrene Aa are responsible for the delivery and assembly of the electronics on board, including navigation equipment. Nortronik AS has supplied the fire and safety equipment.

"We have found a worthy winner
Ship of the Year secretary, Asle Strønen, says that there have been tough discussions in the jury - But we are confident that it is a worthy winner we have decided.
T
hree ships were nominated for the award: "Future of the Fjords", "Le Lapérouse" and Aker Biomarine's new krill trawler, that is under construction
The PowerDock was part of what tipped the scale for the winner”, says Strønen. Admitting that the fact that «Vision of the Fjords» won the award two years ago spoke against this ship winning.
"We received all the information we need from the shipyards. We have discussed this in the jury, and had the last crucial meeting where we made the final decision, says Strønen to Skipsrevyen. "They were all very good candidates.
“ This decision creates a template of how the jury will work in the coming years. We can not look at the vessel alone, but need to look at the infrastructure around the vessel as well, says Strønen.
He admits that the discussions in the jury have been good, as they tend to be. -”We chose to look at the big picture, and the total solution of the innovation. 18

In its decision the jury writes: “M/S «Future of The Fjords» is a comprehensive concept where innovative vessel development goes hand in hand with a completed strategy to make the whole-electric vessel concept possible at
other locations as well.” “The Fjords DA is a private company, with limited resources, that have set the bar high for itself and its competitors to increase the effects of green tourism in Norway, concludes Strønen. SHIP OF THE YEAR
He discovered that ships could be knitted Johan Sunde used to work at Devold, which produces wool-products. They knitted sweaters. Would it be possible to knit a boat?
I
Sigbjørn Larsen siglar@skipsrevyen.no
t started with the swedish navy wanting at “stealth-ship”. A ship that couldn’t be picked up on the radar. The so called “Visby-class” was supposed to be a frigate. But, since the ship was built in carbon-fiber it has later been classed as a corvette. The reason is that the navy classes their ships based on tonnage. It was built at Karlavarven in Karlskrona in Sweden.
Looked like yarn-patterns John Sunde saw the new carbon fiber material. It came in balls, just like balls of yarn. This was something he
knew. For many years he had worked at Devold, which knitted sweaters. Could it be possible to knit a ship as well, he asked himself? Why not try? The first mats of knitted carbon fiber was produced. Today the ship cladding is knitted on gigantic knitting machines at the company Saertex in Germany.
Future oil installations will be knitted "I was giving a speech to Statoil (now Equinor) when Harald Norvik was the CEO, Sunde remembers. - I told them that in the future oil rigs and other installations in the North-Sea will be knitted. I think they wanted to call a doctor, but after the Speech Norvik came over to me and said he had heard many speeches on the topic, but that this was
the most visionary and innovative he had ever heard.
Several benefits It took five years to develop the product. The special carbon fiber product is built today using the “sandwich method”, where two plates of “knitted” carbon fiber is held together by a compositematerial in the middle. This makes it extremely strong. Just as, or maybe stronger than, steel. It is used to build ships, trains, airplanes and windmills, to mention but a few. The light and strong properties has several benefits. It reduces the fuel-consumption, it doesn’t rust, it can send larger airplanes to the skies, it is more maintenance-free and has, in principle, eternal life. Even though one calculates a lifecycle on a carbon ship to be 20-25 years based on the theory of general material fatigue, and stabilization properties.
Got the idea to knit ships The invention brought Sunde to work all over the world. For several years he lived and worked in Taiwan. It has been many traveling days. Now he can stand on board «Future of the Fjords» in the Nærøyfjord. One of the knitted ships. As it soars over the waves in 19 knots. Fully electric, without any emissions whatsoever. The charging station will also contain tanks for gray and black water. "I'm a little proud, he admits. At the same time, I am also happy, humble and grateful for having participated in this adventurous journey. There are many who have contributed in the development of the product, but the idea of knitting ships was mine, Sunde exclaims.

Realizes the vision of emission-free ships A floating “power plant” for boats, busses and cars is ready in Gudvangen. The vision of emission free ships is being realized Sigbjørn Larsen siglar@skipsrevyen.no
"W
ho could have imagined that there was not enough electric power in Aurland to run «Future of the Fjords?» wonders CEO Rolf Andre Sandvik in The Fjords, which owns and runs the tourist ships on the Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord, thus driving the Flåm-Gudvangen stretch.
Constructed by project group "There we were with a contract with the yard, and millions in support from Enova, and then there was not enough electricity? There and then we created a joint project group between us, the shipyard and the energy company, and put our heads together. My task was to ask what is needed to get this done, explains Sandvik. After 45 minutes, we had designed a brand new floating 22

battery that could charge «Future of the Fjords», and also get rid of sewage and wastewater, making sure that the vision of zero emissions could be realized. “Power of the Fjords” is in place in Gudvangen, designed by the project group and built by Brødrene Aa.
Can’t lose the momentum Sandvik says that it has been a challenging process to get the project done in relation to the affected norwegian authorities. "I understand that there must be processes and consultations and such, but for us it was disheartening to think that we should also dump sewage and contaminated water into the world heritage fjord and wait for long-haul processes when we could also get zero emissions with new technology. The development is so fast that we could not afford to lose the momentum we had, exclaims Sandvik.
The owners har put around 35 million NOK on the table to get this project done. The Fjords is a private company without any publicly supported route concession to support them. "Our costs therefore becomes different from a public company. Maybe the harbor should have offered us a solution, but now we have got a solution that can be used by everyone. And the users will pay us for the power they are using, he says.
Excited international journalists "When I have tried to get Norwegian journalists interested in this, they were not very engaged. However when we have international journalists from maritime environments, such as from IMO, they are so enthusiastic. Not only have we solved our own loading situation, we also have the possibility of charging buses and cars etc. And adapted for receiving both gray and black water, he says.
Illustration: Brødrene Aa
This is how the "battery bank" works: Instead of all the waffle irons in Gudvangen going to black every time the ship charges its batteries, «Future of The Fjords» streamlines the power of the grid throughout the day in a steady stream, avoiding tops. "Through this battery bank we can then take out the power we need when we need it, explains Sandvik.
Some journalist have said that this product might solve the environmental problems on the british isles, and in places like the Philippines. And it can become a new international export product from Norway.
"Nevertheless, it has at least resolved our challenges in Gudvangen, says Sandvik.
In addition to being designed in the «Future of The Fjords» design, and fitted with the same colors, the floating battery dock will also act as a boarding ramp to make it more functional for wheelchair users and others who need a good boarding path. "The one we had used so far, was not optimal for this purpose, says Sandvik.

Torstein Aa drew «Vision of the Fjords» on a napkin
The napkin that became Ship of the Year On a napkin in a hotel room in Poland, ship-designer Torstein Aa drew what would become one of Norway's most awarded ships. "I got the idea from the roads back home in Eikefjord, he tells Skipsrevyen.
I
Sigbjørn Larsen siglar@skipsrevyen.no
t was during a trip to visit his sister, who studied medicine in Poland, Torstein drew on the napkin. Inspired by the of the new ship that was to be designed and built by Brødrene Aa. The ship was called «Vision of the Fjords» and would carry tourists from all over the world, in the Norwegian world heritage fjord - Nærøyfjorden.
International awards Like Diners Club, which also was founded on a napkin, the Norwegian shipbuilding industry has now gained its own “napkin success” with one of the most award-winning Norwegiandesigned ships ever. «Vision of the 24

Fjords» won nine awards world wide with its innovative design. The ship has achieved: "Ship of the Year," "Red. award," "Shippax Award," "Electric and hybrid award," "Innovation Award for Universal Design - Both Transportation and Main Prize," "JEC Award," "DOGA Marked For Good design»,and “Bergensprisen - for designer of the year”.
Inspired by the roads in Eikefjord "I’ve grown up in Eikefjord in Sogn og Fjordane, says Torstein Aa. It was the roads there that inspired me to draw the new ship, almost like a spiral up the mountain side. That's the way people in the west always have built roads when they rise up a steep slope. We had many demands in the process; Sea view, movement, comfort and universal
design. Not least the consideration for wheelchair use was taken into account when the outer rows were designed as mountain roads in western Norway, he ads.
The halls gave the measurements "We were going to build a ship that accommodated many passengers. A 40-meter long ship it turned out to be. We used the largest hall we had, says Aa. If they extended the ship to a maximum of width, then 15 meters was the maximum they could reach inside the four walls of the hall. "The funny thing is that if the ship had only been twelve meters wide, it would not have been this design. Then, the
"western roads" would have consumed too much of the interior space for passengers, bridge and so on, he ads. The coincidence would have it that the size of the shipyard-halls became the size of the ship. It turned out to be a coincidence with great success. «Vision of the Fjords» was visited by a group from Japan, where everyone used wheelchairs. "You can imagine what they thought of the ship. It is, above all, nice that the ship has become so functional, says Torstein Aa.
Guardian of the napkin Three months it took, from the idea of the napkin really materialized to designing the ship, it's really a record speed. "Sometimes it can take years to develop a ships design, says Aa. And the napkin? I think my father has taken care of it home in Eikefjord, he smiles. However, Skipsrevyen has gained access to the sketches and can therefore bring authentic photos of the napkin sketch in this edition.
The first sketch made by Torstein Aa is kept by his father

The road to success
If anyone had tried to convince you that this road leads to one of Norway's biggest export successes to China, would you have believed them?

he road to Hyen has been suggested as a competitor for the title "Norway's worst road," Tor Øivin Aa, CEO of the shipyard Brødrene Aa says with a smile. Thanks to the innovative carbon fiber vessels produced by the yard, they have achieved great success, not least in China. So far the yard has delivered, or has on order, a total of seven passenger vessels to China worth over half a billion NOK combined.
Collaborates well with the Chinese "The Chinese had read about our carbon fiber vessels, they visited Hyen and obviously liked what they saw, because they contracted several vessels and bought a 40 percent share in the operating company of the shipyard Aa says. Brødrene Aa have also bought in 26

Brødrene Aa will remain in control of the majority share and control of the Norwegian company. The Chinese are represented on the board of Brødrene Aa with two representatives. "We have very good relationships and cooperate well with the Chinese, says Aa. "Chu Kong Shipping is 70 percent state-owned which makes the decisionmaking a bit slower than we are used to, but i does not have to be a problem, says Aa.
One of China's largest ferry companies Chu Kong Shipping in Hong Kong is one of China's largest ferry companies and operates more than 50 major speedboats in the Pearl River Delta. The Chinese now want to upgrade the fleet with more of Hyen's carbon fiber vessels.
How it all started
The road to Hyen runs through woodlands, hills and scenic stretches. Behind every turn, one postcard scene appears after another on clear sunny days. We came there on a foggy, winter day with snow in the air. Which also had its charm. The award-winning Norwegian painter Nicolai Astrup had his studio in Hyen, and several of his paintings are among the most famous and dear subjects in Norway's art treasure.
Have built boats for 70 years Brødrene Aa have built boats for 70 years. It was Tor Øivin Aas father and uncle, who started the yard right after the second world war. One had a degree in agriculture, while the other was an economist. "They started building wooden boats and were good at attracting savvy workers, says Aa. The yard developed through the yeard and began to build fiberglass boats and boats with so-called «sandwich structure».
Offshore deliveries
Between 1993 and 2001, Brødrene Aa were outside the market for high speed passenger vessels. From 1993 to 2001, the yard delivered more than 3,000 tonnes of subsea shelter structures to the North Sea. Troll Olje Gasprovince, the Vigdis and Tordis fields, as well as many other pipelines are protected with glass fiber structures from Brødrene Aa.
Built trains! During this period, Brødrene Aa was the preferred supplier of ABB Offshore Systems, and ABB was also the customer when Brødrene Aa was given the task of building train fronts for the airport express train and later the “Signature” and “Agenda” trains. In total, the shipyard delivered 77 train fronts and plows to these trains. These were built in fiberglass and vacuum-injected with phenol as a binder.
Won the tender
export successes to China The new vessels on "Kystekspressen" were noticed abroad. One of shipowners that showed interest was Chu Kong Shipping one of the biggest shipping companies in Hong Kong. "They had registered that we built lightweight boats with high speed and small engines. The company had already issued a tender on the route between Hong Kong Airport and Guang Zhou, but paused it when they received data on "Kystekspressen". They came and tried the carbon fiber boats and met with the operator FosenNamsos Sjø. Then they invited us to Hong Kong where we surveyed the routes and requirements for the boats. The rest is the story of one of the biggest Norwegian export successes to China. "We are still anxious about the development with the Chinese, but so far it has been very good. We have already delivered two boats which are in operation, and two carbon structures
are now being equipped in China. We have also contracted three new complete boats to be delivered by spring 2019. Two of them are being built on the yard in Hyen now.
The foundation of Hyen Brødrene Aa still have four brothers with key positions within the management team. The shipyard is not just a beam in the society, it is the foundation of the village Hyen with 170 employees and a turnover of over 500 million NOK. Today, Brødrene Aa is the world's leading shipyard for the construction of carbon fiber vessels. "It would not have gone this fast without good partners, and ship owners, who are willing to invest innovatively. All major fast-ferry companies now have carbon fiber vessels from Brødrene Aa.
Brødrene Aa had built twenty something high speed passenger vessels in carbon fiber when the route "Kystekspressen" between Kristiansund and Trondheim was announced in 2013. The boats that operated the route were basically two well-functioning aluminum catamarans delivered by Fjellstrand in 2002. "Kystekspressen" made 35 knots. They were not old, but expensive to sail. It was the municipalities of Sør Trøndelag and Møre og Romsdal who announced the tender. "There were three different ship owners in the final round, and everyone was based on our solutions, says Aa. "We were able to deliver vessels that achieved equally high speed and at the same time reduced fuel consumption by 40 percent. NOx emissions even more.

SHIP OF THE YEAR
Gustav- Erik Blaalid, Editor in Chief of Skipsrevyen. Photo: Andrea Bærland
More than a ship
Skipsrevyen’s Editor in Chief is happy to see that yet again the readers of the magazine have suggested three excellent nominees. Technologically speaking Blaalid believes we live in a time of upheaval. Andrea Bærland andrea@skipsrevyen.no
“G
iving out the Ship of the Year award every year is important for Skipsrevyen, and it is delightful to see how the nomination process engages our readers,” says Gustav-Erik Blaalid, Editor in Chief of Skipsrevyen. He adds that he has ambitions to develop the concept further to engage the readers even more in the future. “I am also happy to see that the award throughout the years has achieved such a good standing, and that the winners and, their suppliers tend to use it actively, in their marketing,” Blaalid says. 28

SKIPSREVYEN
Innovation is one criteria for the award that Blaalid believes will be increasingly important and tougher to compete on in the years to come. “We have reached a period of upheaval, it is such a major focus on technology, renewable energy, and the world’s first autonomous container vessel was recently contracted,” Blaalid argues. “We see many activities geared towards high-tech and environmental ships among all the major players in scientific research, governing bodies and the private sector.”
Frontrunners “This year we have had three very different, yet innovative nominees. Many might think that the winner is too similar to the 2016 winner, «Vision of The Fjords», but Brødrene Aa has managed to take it one step further this
year;” Blaalid says. “With «Future of The Fjords» and the Powerdock they haven’t just built a ship, they have created an entire concept, and by including the scalable infrastructure succeeded in building a vessel with potential for zeroemission,” he explains. “The environment surrounding Brødrene Aa are not afraid to take risks and try out new solutions, or find new ways of doing familiar operations,” Blaalid says of the shipyard behind «Future of The Fjords» and her predecessor «Vision of The Fjords». “Norwegian shipbuilders, ship owners and suppliers are at the forefront of technological innovation. As we have been throughout history, there is no doubt that the industry should look to Norway.”

SHIP OF THE YEAR «Le Lapérouse» is the first of a total of six ships to be delivered to the French shipping company: Philip Plisson - Ponant
«Le Lapérouse» Vard Søviknes have delivered the first of six Explorer-class cruise vessels to the french cruise company Ponant. «Le Laperouse» has already started its career.

t was in 2016 that Vard received its first contracts for the design and construction of these vessels and secured a contract for four Explorerclass cruise ships to Ponant. Later, the company has ordered an additional two vessels of the same type, as well as an ice-breaking expedition cruise ship. "This is a big and comprehensive project, and we are incredibly proud to have delivered our very first cruise ship at the right time. I am highly impressed with 30

the efforts, flexibility and impetus that all Vard-employees and our partners have shown in this project, says Frode Klokk, Shipyard Director, talking about «Le Lapérouse». «Le Lapérouse» is 131 meters long, and 18 meters wide. It has a passenger capacity on 181, with 92 cabins and suites, and 110 crew members. The moderate size means the ship can access the most remote places. It also includes a ‘Blue Eye’ underwater lounge, the first-of-its-kind in a cruise ship. The 9900 gross tonnage ship has six decks, two restaurants and one pool.
Energy efficient Rolls-Royce provided the variable pitch propeller and the electric propulsion is provided by Vard Electro. The setup involves two shaft lines driven by electric motors, which have controllable pitch propellers at the end Another major boost to the energy efficiency of the vessel is the implementation of a central heat recovery system. Ponant designed the solution with Vard. It recovers heat from the main engines which is then used for the hotel load, including air conditioning and for potable water.
"Le Lapérouse" is now handed over to its owners by Vard Søviknes Photo: Philip Plisson - Ponant
The company decided not to use scrubbers and has instead plumped for marine gasoil. «Le Lapérouse» received the international Cleanship notation from Bureau Veritas as a result of the environmentally friendly equipment used
Large collaborative project The hull was built at Vards shipyard in Romania, and in January it was taken to Norway for equipment, testing and finishing. There has been close cooperation between the shipping company, shipyard and special companies in Vard and their owners Fincantieri. Employees from other Vard shipyards have commuted to Søvik to assist, and at the most, more than 1,000 workers from Norway and abroad have been at work on the ship. "There has been high activity everywhere. Everything we have in housing, offices and production facilities have been in use, and this also gives good ripple to other actors in the local community. A project of this size gives assignments for local business and other jobs in the region. We wish to thank all who have contributed, local business, neighbors, employees, partners and customers. Thanks to a fantastic team spirit we have delivered in record time, Klokk finishes Vard Søviknes will deliver the next ships in the period 2018 to 2021.

Aker BioMarine's new flagship Aker BioMarines new vessel has arrived at Vard Brattvaag on the northwestern part of Norway. The ship has a value of 1 billion NOK. The total value of the contract is 1 billion NOK, including buyer`s supplies.
Helge Martin Markussen helge@skipsrevyen.no
T
he new krill vessel was ordered back in 2017, and the contract was given to Vard Brattvaag. The ship was towed in august from VARD`s shipyard in Romania, where the hull has been built. Now it is in Norway to be fitted, and will be ready for the 2019 season. This is the first time a krillharvesting vessel is been built from scratch.
The new 130- meter long krill vessel will be equipped with the latest and most advanced eco-friendly technol-
ogy. All plans and specifications are developed in close collaboration between fishermen from Aker BioMarine and engineers from VARD and other suppliers. The vessel`s operations will be energy efficient, with a production and processing facility capable of processing raw krill material in the Antarctic. In addition, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving equipment that recycles energy throughout the process. An example of this is how heat from one part of the process is being reused in another part of the process. The vessel will have LED lights that will save the energy used for lighting with 75 percent. In addition, the LED lights are constructed for rough weather and will therefore suit the conditions in Antarctica. The lights will be delivered from Luminell.
It will be equipped with Optimar control systems that allow continuous measurement and analysis, thus optimizing the operating mode for the factory at any given time. Bodø- based Rapp Marine will deliver the deck machinery to the vessel. In addition, Rapp Marine will design complete boom and rigging. The company`s latest technology in electrical operation will be used on the deck equipment on board the ship. In the ship, Aker BioMarine and the yard have used new technology from offshore boats, including on the bridge solution. Aker BioMarine has also collaborated with VARD, Optimar and Aukra Maritime on further development of the Eco-Harvesting trawl method. They also try out a newly developed roll-down system from MRPC in the ship.
We congratulate the yard and the owners with award winning Ship of the Year - Future of the Fjords. Thank you for choosing Straight Line Wipers from Decca Technology AS. SKIPSREVYEN

It is gratifying that it is precisely this entirety that the jury has emphasized in its grounds for the award, " says Sandvik. "Ship of The Year is an award that is prestigious. this have achieved, "he adds. “We have always had a vision in the company to operate environmentalfriendly. We are the “first mover” to get green technology on board. We make our money from selling nature experiences, and therefore zero emissions and a green future is a goal for us.
From the Pacific to Nærøyfjorden Sandvik was himself a cruise-captain before he went ashore to become director for destination development in of the state-owned company SIVA - the company for industrial growth. When Sandvik shortly after received the question of joining The Fjords as the CEO, he declined at first. But after
examining all the exciting development opportunities that lay ahead, not least in view of the introduction of new and green technology, he decided that it seemed more and more exciting. The application was sent the day before the deadline. After a selection process, Sandvik got the job. “From the Pacific and the Amazon, to Flåm and Nærøyfjorden! I have not yet decided what to do when I grow up, says Sandvik with a smile. The Fjords have accumulated a lot of maritime expertise, so so far, it has been a good choice, " he concludes.
