RENEWAL OF WUMING SEDA BUDDHIST COLLEGE Academic Work (individual) Apr - Jul,2015 Instructor: CAO Likun Location: Sichuan, China Because of the very unique religious faith and nature resources , life style of Tibetan is tremendous relying on the understanding and exploiting of nature. As this Buddhist college become well-known home and abroad, people regard this shrine as their pilgrimage destination. Monks from all over the world self-construct their dwellings and adapt them to the needs quicker . However, informal settlements are incomplete , which destroy their traditional natural circulation relationship seriously. This project rethink the current need of the existing community as well as those of future monks, thus three new patterns are introduced in order to create a harmony community not only reviving Tibetan’s traditional life circle, but also satisfying monks religious faith in their future growth.

TRADITION LIVING MODE 87% people in Seda are engaged exclusively in animal husbandry. 98% people in Seda are in belief of Tibetan Buddhism. Given its historical religious and political factors, thousands years of geographical isolation, Seda enforced by immigration restriction, leaving there a pure race closet to original situations. This place, commonly sees monks, believers and adventures.

CONCEPT I proposed to solve the problem by three strategies, prairie restoration, tradition revival and economic resurgence. And three strategies are corresponding to three topologies, which interactively effect each other. Under this concept, all of them would process in a positive way. It also serves as a development model for the increasing population in Wuming Seda Buddhist College. By doing that, this site can realize its own development while there keep the balance of nature, people and economy, and finally contributes to the steadfast of monks faith.

SITE STRATEGY After the whole master plan and according to the GIS analysis, one typical site was selected to design in details. Three strategies were practiced in this site as an example. First, dangerous and deserted houses were selected for relocation. On the higher part of the slope, where is extremely steep, meadow were restored into pasture and developed animal husbandry. Second, commercial band were established in order to increase local people’s income, also the money was used to the third step-build new neighborhood units. The new units were equipped with new facilities and an renaissance of traditional living mode.

REVIVAL OF OLD TOWN Professional Work (Team) March - Jul,2015 Instructor: HU Jie Location: Hunan, China Size: 52.7 HA Role: Recommended the concept of water restoration system Helped design main landscape nodes and details

As a town more than six-hundred year history and thrived from Qing Dynasty, Gaoyi is a traditional town with great rural tourism value among surrounding cities. With abundant water resource, water act as an indispensable part of villagers' daily life— the basic necessities of life, drinking, eating, agricultural production and transportation— are deeply relied on water. However, along with historical development, Gaoyi Town is facing water problems, such as stagnant pond and seasonal flooding, taking away the its original attraction. This project aims at reviving the town by reconnecting the water system. By tracing back to the source of water, connecting the scattered wells, ponds and streams into a whole water system and building flood wall, we create activity spaces along with the water system. Thus, rural tourism will be an additional income for villagers refurbished their town.

CREATE CITY PLAZA AS LIVING ROOM Academic Work (individual) May-Jun,2013 Instructor: ZHU Jianning Location: Beijing, China Xidan Commercial Street, as the most famous modern business district of Beijing, attracts large amounts of youths relaxing and shopping. However, although it acts as an entrance of the busy commercial center, the simplex use of plaza makes the square a deserted and negative areas. Therefore, this large-scale square just meet the basic transportation function. This project is trying to achieve the concept of City Living Room, which means everyone, single or groups, can find a cozy and comfortable space in the plaza and enjoy activities. By analyzing people's relationship models, a multiple-module is designed to meet the requirement of varying numbers of relationship. Also, making full use of the altitude difference, I use steps as an design pattern to create different interesting zones. As a result, not only can this plaza achieve the basic aim of the connection of people's destination, but also meets the requirements for people's activities.
