Missouri Lodge of Research (MLR) Meeting & Breakfast in Columbia September 25 & 26, 2006

ANNUAL MLR MEETING This year’s Annual Meeting of the Missouri Lodge of Research will be held at the “Holiday Inn Select”, Columbia, during the Annual Session of the Grand Lodge of Missouri. This Session will be from September the 24th through the 26th when Grand Lodge closes and has open installation of officers for 2006-2007.

The Lodge of Research Meeting, which will include the election of new officers, will be held at 4:14 PM on Monday afternoon in the Windsor IV Room of the Holiday Inn. The MLR Breakfast, which has a great reputation for good food and always an interesting speaker, will be held at 7:00 AM on Tuesday morning the 26th. Brother Ron Hartoebben, a member of Herculaneum Lodge No. 338 will be the honored guest speaker for that morning. Tickets will be available at MLR table in the hotel lobby on Sunday and Monday prior to the breakfast, from our Lodge of Research Secretary, RWB Ron Miller or assistant Adriene Green.

Brethren, this has been an exciting time to be involved in the Missouri Lodge of Research. There are so many great things going on for us right now. The Books on the Lodges are coming along great, MWB Bill’s Newsletter is eagerly waited on, and the Book on Edicts and Decisions of Grand Masters is being started

by RWB Jon Broyles. As this is written, work continues to give the Lodge of Research a 501 C3 Tax Status.

Time and Space would not permit thanking everyone who has made all this possible. Why should a Mason belong to the Lodge of Research? When I think back to when I joined, I have to stop and ponder, was the info there that I needed?

I had barely heard of the Lodge, but I knew RWB Richard L. Smith and he was an Officer at the time. If he belonged, I knew I probably needed to join. We now have a wealth of info out there but we need to Crow Louder. Missouri is again in a Leadership Role with the programs we have going in the Lodge of Research. The Officers we have in Line have a great deal of experience and talent and will lead this Lodge to greater heights than we who have went before can even imagine. I wish to personally think RWB Ron Miller, Ron Wood, and MWB Bill Soutiea. For their help and guidance during these past years. I will always treasure this year as Worshipful Master of the Missouri Lodge of Research.

RULES FOR PLAY: You must circle all letters in each of the above words successively. (Note: Some letters in the puzzle MAY be used in more than one word - so don’t blot of the letter to be unreadable. I like to circle them with a “red” pen.)

WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?

THE BLUE LODGE: THE BEDROCK OF FREEMASONRY

True Masonic Ritual, as it always was intended to do, teaches the great lessons of life: the importance of honor and integrity, of being a person on whom others can rely, of being both trusting and trustworthy, of realizing that you have a spiritual nature as well as a physical nature, of the importance of self-control, of knowing how to love and be loved, of knowing how to keep confidential what others tell you so that they can "open up" without fear. In short, Masonic ritual teaches us to reach for a higher standard in conducting our lives.

Freemasonry sometimes has been referred to as a “secret society.�

This is an inaccurate statement.

Freemasons certainly don't make a secret of the fact they are members of their Lodges. We wear rings, lapel pins, and tie clasps with Masonic emblems like the Square and Compasses, the best known of Masonic signs that, logically, recall our early symbolic roots in stonemasonry.

Masonic buildings are clearly marked and usually listed in the phone book. The only thing that could be referred to as secret - although we prefer the word private - are the methods of recognition such as grips, words, signs, and our ritual by which we induct new members.

Over the centuries, Freemasonry has developed into a worldwide social and community service organization, emphasizing personal study, self improvement, and social betterment via individual involvement and philanthropy.

During the late 1700's, it was one of the organizations most responsible for spreading the ideals of the Enlightenment: the dignity of man and the liberty of the individual, the right of all persons to worship as they choose, the formation of democratic governments, and the importance of public education. Masons supported the first public schools in both Europe and America.

The 3.5 million Masons worldwide continue to help men and women face the problems of the 21 st century by building bridges of brotherhood and instilling in our communities ideals for a better tomorrow.

by W:.Tim Bryce, PM, MPS timb001@phmainstreet.com Palm Harbor, Florida, USA "A Foot Soldier for Freemasonry" I was smoking a cigar with a Brother the other day and we got into a lively discussion on the Blue Lodge (aka, Craft or Particular Lodge). He wondered why I was so committed to the Blue Lodge and not the other bodies of Freemasonry.

Although I joined the Shrine and High 12, my participation in these bodies can be described as spotty at best. As to the Scottish Rite and York Rite, frankly, they haven't made their case for me yet.

My friend argued, "Surely you do not believe the body of Masonic knowledge stops at the Blue Lodge door?" Perhaps not, but I countered that the Blue Lodge is the bedrock of the fraternity. If it crumbles, so will all of the other Masonic bodies.

The Blue Lodge represents the foundation of the fraternity.

All of the other Masonic bodies are built on top of it and, as such, they are totally dependent on its existence. Yet, it seems people are anxious to be raised and move on to these other bodies that are seemingly more fun and interesting. Perhaps this is because there are more rules and regulations heaped on to a Blue Lodge than the other bodies. Consequently, Blue Lodges are inhibited by their Grand Lodges, some to the point of paralysis. Small wonder people want to move on to other bodies.

These other Masonic bodies often behave autonomously, as if they were independent of the Blue Lodge. They're not.

They are totally dependent on it. Yet, they rarely lift a finger to help the Blue Lodge. Instead, they fly overhead like vultures waiting to pick off the new members for their own organizations. This is resulting in a growing rift between the Blue Lodge and the other bodies, a very unhealthy situation.

Instead of snatching bodies, the other Masonic organizations should be looking for ways to cooperate with the Blue Lodge, such as attracting members, presenting educational programs, helping in fund-raisers, assisting in Lodge newsletters and web sites, etc. Instead of an adversarial relationship, they should be building a spirit of cooperation and trust. Unfortunately, this is not what is happening. Relations have gotten so bad that some Lodges flat-out refuse to let the other bodies in their doors.

I guess the point of all this is that we are all on the same team, but we should always be cognizant of the fact that the Blue Lodge is the bedrock of the fraternity. I like to think of it as the offensive front-line of a football team; without them, everyone else will get clobbered.
