SEMI-ANNUAL MLR MEETING This Semi-Annual Meeting of the Missouri Lodge of Research was held in the Dining Room of the Masonic Complex in Columbia on Saturday, May 12th. The MLR WB was not present having been called out of state. At 12:00 Noon, the dining full of Bothers, many with ladies, our SW, RWB Nick Cichielo opened the meeting, called for the “Pledge of Allegiance” followed by prayer by our Chaplain RWB Dale Roller. He then stated that we would go, by table directed, through the serving line and following the meal and dessert, would reconvene for introductions followed by our honored guest speaker. After the delicious meal of salad, mostaccioli, roll, cake and coffee or tea, RWB Ron Jones, GLMO SGD, was called to introduce all Grand Lodge Officers present. There were 11 present including our Grand Master, MWB John Hess who was welcomed with Masonic Grand Honors. There were also three Past Grand Masters present. Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the KYCH in the York Rite, and belongs to many other Masonicorganizations. WB deHoyos stated that his talk today would be titled “What is Freemasonry?” Or better yet, “What freemasonry IS … . and What It ISN’T!” Not necessarily from the point of Freemasons only, but as viewed by individuals who are not Freemasons and don’t really know what it is all about. It is evident that there are many sources from which to gain information, good and bad, but that there are many that don’t know what they are writing about. He gave many interesting stories how Freemasonry has been viewed but explained that misconceptions of what it is really all about is missed by most of those who are not Freemasons. After a while, he asked that the ladies present be excused so that we, the REAL Freemasons, could do some exploration, questions and answers about anything in Freemasonry. What a great session ending about 1:45PM. RWB Cichielo brought up that the MLR leadership had today discussed the need for a dues increase. This would be discussed and voted upon at the fall meeting. The MLR “Masonic Library” will begin being established upstairs in the Masonic Complex across from the Museum. It was then announced that our Truman Lecture Series speaker at the MLR Breakfast at Grand Lodge this year will be Brother Clifton Truman Daniel, Harry S Truman’s Grandson, who was Initiated, Passed and Raised several months ago in an Illinois Lodge as reported in the Spring 2010 Vol. 57 No 2 Missouri Freemason Magazine.

P L A Y:
You must circle each of the letters individually in each of the Masonic words listed above. Then check off or line through the word found in the list. Do NOT BLACK or BLOT out the letters in the puzzle as each letter may be used in a different word also. When all the words have been lined through, you should then have those 8 letters left which have not been circled. Write down these letters only, from upper left to lower right and this will spell out the Masonic word answer. Do you know which word it is? Sounds familiar doesn’t it? Oh, the answer to our last puzzle was: John C. Montgomery, Jr. 1978-1979 & Larry C. Reynolds. 2009-2010.

PALLIATE -- AGGRAVATE "You are not to palliate nor aggravate the offenses of your brethren, but in the decision of every trespass against our rules ... " At first glance, the meaning of the word "palliate" is a no brainer, i.e. "don't beat up on your Brethren. "Most Masons know what these words mean (or think they do), but then when the dictionary (American Heritage Dictionary) is consulted, there is a twist: 1. To make (an offense or crime) seem less serious; extenuate. 2. To make less severe or intense; mitigate. Then there are the synonyms: extenuate, gloss over, white wash. When one thinks about it, the words seem to say: treat the acts of your Brethren equally -- don't whitewash his deeds, but don't persecute him either.
