SEMI-ANNUAL MLR MEETING

This Semi-Annual Meeting of the Missouri Lodge of Research was held in the Dining Room of the Masonic Complex in Columbia on Saturday, May 4th and was called to order at 12:15PM by RWB Nick Cichielo, Worshipful Master with about 75 Brethren present. We had a delightful meal of sandwiches, variety of chips, cookies and soft drink. Following the meal, the MLR business session (reports, etc.) was conducted and concluded. Then the Worshipful Master called upon Brother Aaron Shoemaker to introduce our honored, guest speaker, Brother Alton G. Roundtree who is a renowned author, lecturer and historian in Prince Hall Freemasonry. He gave detailed information on the formation, growth and history of PHA to include the formation of their National Grand Lodge which is over the Prince Hall Lodges in 26 states.Prince Hall Freemasonry developed from a pre Revolutionary War Lodge (African Lodge No. 459) (Con’t on Page 2, Col 1 top)

Librarian’s Report By John W. Hess, PGM, Librarian

Our Missouri Masonic Research Library continues to grow and expand. As of this date 3312 books and magazines have been cataloged and added to the shelves in the main library and the archive section. The Library would like to thank Brother William Brantley for a donation of over 200 books and magazines. While some of the books were old, many of the books were more recently published and have added a more modern look to our collection. The Library would also like to thank the family of Brother Henry Stoker for the donation of the “King Solomon Edition” of Manly Hall’s “Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic… Symbolic Philosophy” It is a valuable book and accompanies the third edition copy that the Library has in its collection. Donations like these add to the value of the Library as a resource for continued Masonic education and research. The “Adopt a Book” program continues to provide a resource for interested persons to read and study valuable books at home on their own computers. 27 books have been adopted, digitally scanned, and added to the Lodge of Research website for viewing. A donation of $250.00 allows the Lodge of Research to have a book digitally scanned and made available for study. The officers of the Lodge continue to request your support in this worthwhile project. On Saturday March 2, 2013, Worshipful Brother David Brown, Chairman of the Grand Lodge Education Committee presented a paper at the first “Day at the Library” event sponsored by the Lodge of Research. WB Brown gave an interesting and informative lecture relating to the geometry of Ancient Civilizations of the Western Hemisphere. Look forward to additions “Day at the Library” events that the Lodge of Research will be providing to further your Masonic education. Come by and visit your library and make use of its valuable resources to improve your Masonic knowledge. The Library is open the third Saturday of every month and during the week by appointment with the Grand Secretary John W. Hess PGM

which, following the war and having not paid dues and lost it’s original charter, in 1784 reapplied for proper recognition and chartering of the Black Lodge in 1787 which eventually became the Grand Lodge chartering Black Lodges in the (now) United States. Brother Prince Hall died in 1807 but his name continued on in future Lodges which includes the term Prince Hall Affiliation, shown as (PHA), immediately following a Lodge name and number.

BROTHER ALTON G. ROUNDTREE, PHA The great now is that Brother Roundtree’s entire talk given, will, in a short time, be available for your viewing at: www.molor.org/trumanlectureseries as all previous lecture series presenters have been for your individual enjoyment. We certainly try to keep our membership updated with all the MLR information we can. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do we lose some of our brothers between the time they are made Entered Apprentices and before they become Master Masons? That has always been a bit of a mystery, and a true loss for our lodges. Hoping to find some clues to what was going on, I began to talk with some EA’s and picked up a few things. It turned out that each of them was a bit different, of course, just like the rest of us in lodge. But there was something that kept coming up. These new Masons seemed to feel a little lost, a little confused by the things they didn’t quite “get” about Masonry, and about everything going on around them.

Almost all of these EA’s had a coach to help with their proficiency. But the new brothers often talked about that as if it was work, rather than as a steppingstone to something exciting. They seemed to be looking and waiting for something else in their Masonic experience. In the world around us there is an interesting practice called the Big Brother program. It is mostly intended to help troubled young people find their way forward in life. But the idea is intriguing. As you probably know, the Big Brother “adopts” and helps his Little Brother, talking with him one-onone, mentoring him a bit, and helping him find that way forward. In Masonry, each of us tries to give young EA’s and Fellow Crafts a few minutes of that, spreading our limited time around. But among the brothers I spoke with, it seemed to be rare that one person took a direct and ongoing interest in an individual EA. The assumption seemed to be that the coach was doing that, or else the first-signer on the EA’s application for membership. Sometimes that assumption was right. But quite often that was not what happened. Maybe we should consider having a more formal Big Brother program in our lodges. If the Master chooses to do this, he could appoint (or assign a Warden to appoint) a Big Brother for each prospective brother when the lodge accepts him to receive the degrees of Masonry. That Big Brother would be asked to seek out his Little Brother at each meeting to see how he is doing and introduce him to other brothers. If you decided to become one of those Big Brothers, you would likely hear a lot of questions from a confused young man. But if you are willing to share some of your lodge experiences with him, you are likely to find a very avid listener. You might get some satisfaction from seeing your Little Brother pass to FC. And then comes the experience of seeing him raised in lodge as a Master Mason. On that special day, maybe you will get to enjoy the full feeling of what it means to be a Big Brother. And know you have given your lodge the greatest gift it could ever receive . . . an excited and eager new Master Mason.

R U L E S F O R P L A Y: You must circle or line thru each of the letters individually in each of the Masonic Words listed above. Then check off or line out the word found in the list. Do NOT BLACK or BLOT out the letters in the puzzle as each letter may be used in a different words also. When all the words have been lined through, you should then have the 13 letters left which have not been circled. Write down these letters only, from upper left to lower right and this will spell out the word. You have heard the word many times. Do you HAVE THEM? Oh, by the way. The answer to our last puzzle was: KENNETH P. McCUTCHEON, DDGL from the 28th Masonic District
