A Winter Wonderland

From the Editors
Sometimes, even a simple quote can inspire an entire spread or a performance that suspends us so that you forget time and just revel in the beauty of it all. Winter was designed around the theme of love and all its delightful imperfections since Valentine’s Day falls in this season as well as our favorite performance of the year, The Nutcracker. Performed by the Marion Ballet and lead by company owner Nicole Benson, this is a performance you will not want to miss. Every detail in every scene and moment was designed so artistically that you will find yourself captivated. In this issue we hope you will find Christ in Christmas with an adorable manger scene, cut out your very own paper doll designed and illustrated by a local teen talent, be inspired to throw your very own Nutcracker Suite Party with all the sugary confectionary details, Valentine crafts with a whimsical touch, and a New Year’s celebration packed full of glitter. As always and in true Momazine style we hope to have taken the simplicity of childhood to the next level. So enjoy winter through the eyes of a child. There is nothing quite like it.
May your days be merry & bright

Silent Night
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But
the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to
God in the highest, and on earth and found Mary and Joseph,
peace to men on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off
and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. Luke 2:8-18

Merry Christmas!
Mary
, what can she teach us as mothers to our own children?
A mother to our saviour and Lord Jesus Christ began her story in ancient times and still connects to us all in modern times. What Mary can teach us is at times difficult to put forth in our lives when God’s will differs from our own, yet so very important to us all. Mary is iconic in that she watched her son enter the world, suffer within it, and exit. We as parents can use her as an example because we all need to watch our children suffer or struggle to become greater beings. God’s will was done through Mary because she said yes to Him. Mary most likely did not have plans to become a mother to the Messiah but her answer was Yes. She let God’s will be done. A modern lesson is gained when we recognize her willingness to always accept His will even when His plan was not necessarily her own. Often times we try to pre-plan everything in our own lives that we forget that God has a greater plan in place. by | Jennifer Burzotta Jennifer Burzotta is a Clinical Pastoral Counselor, Temperament Counselor, and Domestic Missions Director with Faithfully Guided. Christmas House
There is nothing more beautiful in a
home than the people who live there. Unless of course that home happens to belong to the Spencer family where it seems the best of both worlds resides. Warm, friendly, inviting, and gorgeous are just some ways in which to describe the Spencer home. Kristine and her husband Matt set out to accomplish one very important goal when deciding on the decor, make it a place of comfort with an open atmosphere so as to encourage family and friends to visit there often.
“Our family loves the holidays and we always have some [type of ] gathering for our friends and family! Our son is so important to us and we want our home to be a place that the kids want to come home to [stay]. We have an open door policy with the kids and always have people here.” —Kristine Spencer Prior to becoming the amazingly decorated home you see today, the Spencer’s home was found in foreclosure and in need of serious work. After purchasing their new place, the Spencers contacted Shannon Roth and Cass Retz of Shannon Roth and Olivia & Company as the interior designers of their new home. Christmas House
15 |
When we spoke with Cass and her mom Shannon about any particular influence or inspiration drawn from when designing the Spencer’s home she shared the overall style is eclectic. Combine old with new, modern with antique and the final result is an interior that does not become dated. Roth and Retz based design choices more on the muted palette with a lot of inspiration from art. Kristine was interested in beginning an art collection which for Shannon and Cass equated to keeping the colors clean with a final result where the art seems that much more important.

Kristine had this to share about how her relationship with her designers has flourished over the past few years of working with them,
“Shannon and Cass are family to us. We love them dearly and trust their design choices implicitly. They captured who we are as a family, that is an amazing fit to have.” —Kristine Spencer by Jaime Compton
“If you look back at pictures of this house in ten years it will still be fresh.” —Cass Retz of Olivia & Co.

cust ts om ha ndcrafted ornamen Nutcracker Shadowbox Ornament | Jennifer Grenko www.jengrenko.blogspot.com www.etsy.com/shop/MarshmallowCreations For this simple shadowbox project, I used a vintage ornament box that held small ornaments. (I collect all kinds of vintage and miniature christmas ornaments so I had this on hand.) You can use an empty cardboard box from the craft store. I lined the inside with pretty paper and added a tiny ballerina cupcake topper that I painted with white acrylic craft paint and added extra fine iridescent glitter too. I used a small bottlebrush tree that was part of a set. I bleached the dark green out of the tree by using a solution of half bleach/half water. When the tree was dry, I sprayed with spray dye, added Aleene’s “Glitter Snow” and more glitter. The nutcracker is a little wooden ornament that I painted with a couple of coats of pink enamel craft paint on his pants. The candy canes were made from pink and white chenille stems that I bought in packs at the dollar store. I twisted one pink and white stem together, added Aleene’s glitter snow and glitter and shaped into candy canes. I used a metallic pipe cleaner for the hanger. Those are sold at the dollar store in packs as well. Everything was adhered to the box with a small, low heat hot glue gun.

Take some time... Here at Momazine we are moms too. We are always searching for ways to connect with our kiddos with whatever time we have available.
If you have FIVE minutes… Read a Caldecott Winner like “Where The Wild Things Are.” Fly a paper airplane Tell your kids a quick story about yourself when you were there age. Say a prayer for thanksgiving in your life. Race them to a tree in your yard.
If you have ONE hour… Play board games. Make and bake cookies together. Set up a scene with their toys and play altogether. Visit the library together for a new book. Take them individually on a date for a milkshake and listen to them talk.
If you have a WEEKEND... Make it outdoors with Geocaching. Download the app. itunes.apple.com/us/app/geocaching/id292242503?mt=8 Make sure to have a few little pieces on hand to leave in your Geocaching boxes found on your adventure before taking out a new treasure to keep. Nutcracker Marion Theatre Ballet
Photography | Jeremiah Stanley of Jeremiah Stanley Photography www.jeremiahstanley.com www.chicshotstudio.com
Each year I sit in The Nutcracker, captivated with near perfect pirouettes and beautiful entrechat all performed brilliantly by the Marion Ballet Theatre. After just a few minutes into the performance I silently thank the performers and Nicolle Benson for creating such beauty. This performance is truly a gift to our town. We were inspired to share the other side of this ballet with our Momazine readers. One in which hard work and athleticism unite well before the December performance to create grace and beauty on stage. Before the beautiful smiles and hand-sewn costuming seen on performance night; blood, sweat, and tears are shed in grueling practices. It is our hope for you as readers to enjoy this contrast between “behind the curtain” and “on stage” with two very different photography styles while using the very same ballerinas. Jeremiah Stanley shot his end in the dance studio with special lighting used to create a high definition result with precise detail. Look for his work on a black background. Elena Ringeisen used natural light outdoors to achieve a softer appearance. Look for her work on a white background. These unique styles achieved equally beautiful results. by | Jaime Compton

The Nutcracker
“Under the tutu, you must be strong as steel,” my ballet instructor said. For ballet is equal parts art and athleticism. As droves of people fill the theatres of annual Christmas ballets, they sit in awe of the beauty and the splendor before them on the stage. The sets, the costumes, the music, the pointe shoes- it is a little girl’s dream come true! Yet, for each and every dance on that stage, there are countless hours of preparation. Ballet is a very unique art form. A ballerina must be disciplined and focused, yet learn to make every step look effortless. There is purpose in every elonge’, every glance, every breath. And the culmination of all of the hard work is immeasurable. A dancer must grow to love critique and must be willing to risk failure in order to achieve greatness. The studio is her safe place- a haven where girls bond over their sweat, (sometimes blood) and tears. Our teachers taught us to “leave it all at the door and just dance.” by | Leighton Mims Leighton Mims is entering her 10th year as ballet instructor at Dance Divine Ballet School. When she finds time to herself she enjoys running, Pilates, reading. Leighton spends almost all of her free time with her three beautiful children: Clay, Walker, and Kate. The Nutcracker

Have you got a brook in your little heart —Emily Dickinson Have you got a brook in your little heart, Where bashful flowers blow, And blushing birds go down to drink, And shadows tremble so? And nobody, knows, so still it flows, That any brook is there; And yet your little draught of life Is daily drunken there. Then look out for the little brook in March, When the rivers overflow, And the snows come hurrying from the hills, And the bridges often go. And later, in August it may be, When the meadows parching lie, Beware, lest this little brook of life Some burning noon go dry! Young Cupids
