MEMBERSHIP CARDS

Please ensure that your membership card has been updated to the new barcoded card. In order to produce the card we require a photo ID. If we haven't already updated your card please go to the Wellbeing & Fitness Desk to have your photo taken this month. Unfortunately, we cannot issue new membership cards without a photo ID or allow you to use the Club.

SCANNING IN & OUT

For health and safety reasons we require all members to scan in and out at the Wellbeing & Fitness Desk. Failure to do so may result in termination of membership.

MEMBERSHIP TIMES

Please remember the club usage times apply to your membership type. It is important that you adhere to these, otherwise we will be forced to withdraw your membership.

GYM USE

We advise that all members seek guidance from the Wellbeing Team before using any new or unfamiliar equipment. Please note the gym is unsupervised at various times of the day. If you are pregnant, have injuries and / or medical problems or have not used gym equipment before please contact a Wellbeing Coach prior to use. For health and safety reasons please ensure you are wearing suitable exercise clothing and trainers when using the Gym. Use of the Gym and equipment is at your own risk.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME

•Don’t forget your kit

• Towels are included so no need to bring one

•Check you have your membership card to scan in on arr ival

•Book your class to ensure availability via the Champneys app. Members can book up to 6 days in advance

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

•Come to the Wellbeing & Fitness Reception to say ‘hi’ and scan in

•Let us know if you are new so we can guide you especially on class and gym advice

• Take a locker band from reception

• Get changed if you need to and then pop your belongings in a locker

DURING A CLASS

•Let the instructor know if you are new to the class, have an injury or are pregnant, so they can give you extra attention

•Listen out when told what equipment you need.

•Work hard, enjoy and get sweaty...

•Be respectful to each other

•Ask the Instructor or team at the Wellbeing & Fitness Desk if you have any questions or would like any class recommendations. •Skip out the door. It’s compulsory!

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

Make use of the fantastic grounds that your club has to offer and play a game of tennis/padel or go for a walk. We also offer swimming lessons whether you are looking to learn to swim, learn a new stroke or improve a current one.

Remembering the Legacy of

Mrs. Dorothy Purdew
OBE

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved owner, Mrs. Dorothy Purdew OBE. Last month, we bid farewell to a remarkable woman who touched the lives of so many with her vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to wellness.

Mrs. Purdew’s journey was one of resilience and determination. She firmly believed in living life to the fullest, and even at the age of 91, her enthusiasm for beauty trends, culinary delights from our chefs, and the progress of our apprentices remained undiminished. Her enduring legacy lies in her transformation of the health-farm model from a dated image of enforced weight-loss and lettuce-leaf diets to a more holistic and 21st-century concept of “wellness.” As we pay tribute to her, let us remember that she defied all odds, proving that someone from a working-class background could become one of the world’s most influential spa operators.

Dorothy Rose Sanders, born in 1932, faced humble beginnings in Clapham, South London. Her early years were marked by adversity, but her resilience prevailed. She left formal education at the age of 14 and embarked on a journey that eventually led her to build an empire centered on well-being.

Marriage, motherhood, and a personal health challenge led her to the path of entrepreneurship. After losing five stone with Weight Watchers, she was inspired to start her own slimming club, WeightGuard. Despite initial setbacks, her determination saw her empire grow to 70 clubs. In 1981, she acquired Henlow Grange health farm, a turning point that would revolutionise the wellness industry. Her vision encompassed a more sophisticated approach, leaving behind the days of crowded treatment rooms filled with smoke and vitamin buckets. Her guests were now treated to well-balanced meals and a truly holistic experience.

Mrs. Purdew’s contributions were not only recognised in her lifetime but also celebrated

with an OBE in 2008. She penned her autobiography, “The Long Road to Champneys,” in 2010, a testament to her incredible journey.

Even in her nineties, she remained an active and inspiring presence, constantly seeking ways to enhance the guest experience. For her, educating people about dieting and the joy of exercise was not just a mission—it was a labour of love.

On a personal note I have worked for Mrs Purdew for 29 years. She was a mentor, exceptional leader, a source of motivation, and a guiding light in my professional life. It is an honour to have had the privilege of working alongside her and being a part of and witness to her incredible achievements and Champneys success.

To those of you who have known and cherished Mrs. Purdew for many years, we invite you to pay your respects by leaving your tributes in our digital book of condolence. Your words will help us remember and honor the extraordinary life of this exceptional woman.
