POINT OF VIEW by Barry Thompson

I

SIX YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT

N this issue, I have looked back over six years of running my McLay Fortress 4.8 and documented the things I have done to upgrade it and make it more of what I want in a boat. Apart from a 10ft Fyran, this is my first aluminium boat and came after many years of fibreglass bowriders and hardtops. Having a family of three boys, all as enthusiastic about everything boating as I am, necessitated boats that served the variety of on-water pursuits; wakeboarded, tubed, waterskied, kneeboarded, dived, raced, picnicked and overnighted. So over time, the boats reflected the family needs. Bowriders were by far the most popular, and I had a variety from Bonito, Buccaneer and Tristram. Once the boys had left home, I had half share in a Buccaneer 685 Hardtop, and while my wife and I planned to overnight, we never did. It was a fabulous boat for fishing and daytripping, and my partner in the boat made great use of its overnighting capabilities. After selling the Buccaneer, all I needed was a small boat to look after my fishing fix. The McLay Fortress 4.8 was the ideal boat, and over the past six years, it has served me well. When I first got the boat it was a ‘plain Jane’, with an unpainted hull, although it was coated in Nyalic, a 65hp two-stroke Mercury tiller outboard and a very basic interior. Just after I got it, I had it wrapped by Steve at LetterRip, and I am amazed at how good it still looks after six years. Apart from a few scratches caused by a wharf pile, it looks as good as the day it went on. Every year I have changed the motor, and the 65hp has now jumped to a 90hp. I think this is it now, as it is plenty of power for the boat and enough with the Big Tiller. I do have plans to fit an Ultraflex power steer kit sometime soon, as it is a little hard on the arm when I have to drive with the engine trimmed in. I am a great fan of the Minn Kota electric trolling motor and use it consistently. It is perfect when drift fishing and the spot lock serves as my second anchor. Last season I installed a Viper drum winch, and that has certainly taken all the stress out of anchoring. The other significant addition was a new side console, which looks a lot more professional than the one I made and now I have somewhere to flush mount the Humminbird Helix 9, a glovebox and anchoring controls. I reckon I have the boat set up just about as I want it now, although there are still a few small things I need to add, such as tackle drawer and a cover over the battery locker. Overall the McLay Fortress has proven the perfect boat for me and my boating needs. There are so many options in size, design and style, so getting the boat that suits what you want shouldn’t be too hard. It also comes down to budget, and whether you are spending under $15,000 for a small open tiller steer dinghy to more than $400,000 for a 9m plus hardtop, there is a boat for you. That’s what is so good about aluminium boats. They have the versatility to be changed right from the new build process. If you like a particular make and model but want a few alterations done before you get it, then most builders will accommodate. Having the boat you want, to do what you want and how you want is so important and makes your boating experience so much better. I know it has worked for me.

AS TOUGH AS THEY COME

ELEASED at the 2019 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show the 2250 range has its DNA in the distinctive 2750 Centrecab. Some Stabicraft customers wanted the function of a full walkaround but on a scaled-down hull, making it a more affordable and manageable boating option. The goal was a market defining central cabin and walk around, offering 360 degrees of fish fighting space. “We have given the 2250 design its own purpose. Staunch, aggressive, sharp lines that scream adventure. Stabicraft has a history of taking functional concepts, like the buoyancy ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

chambers and giving them their style. It’s by no means conventional, but certainly unique, aggressive and tough” says Stabicraft CEO, Paul Adams. One of the biggest challenges was maintaining a spacious, ergonomic cabin while maintaining a functional walkaround space. Stabicraft overcame this by maximising the overall beam, and the walkaround space is stepped into the external cabin wall. The wider body also increases stability at rest and offshore performance, all the while remaining under the legal road towing limits. Another big tick is the long-range 300L

fuel tank, a class leading fuel capacity for a boat of 6.9 metres. It was after the delivery of the first 2250 that Stabicraft knew the American market would demand this hull coupled with their particular design cues – a forward raking screen known as the Ultracab at Stabicraft. Like its successful predecessors in the 2500 and 2750 models, the 2250 Ultra Centrecab is an entirely new type of alloy plate boat in the American market. The Ultracab designs offer more room in the cabin and an immense feeling of space. So the 2250 project continued with two versions; a 2250 Centrecab (raked back screen) and a 2250 Ultra Centrecab (raked forward screen). Outside of the 360-degree walkaround, the hull holds all of Stabicraft’s core features. The Arrow Pontoons, giving the safety and assurance of our aluminium life ring, while helping disperse water as it moves up the hull. The Game Chaser Transom provides great backing-up and manoeuvrability while chasing fish and moving in tight spaces. The Wing-style Coamings offer a huge surface area for backsides, rods and Stabicraft multi holders. Multiple packages are available (4 to be precise), to suit different end-users. Each package comes with the option of choosing which cabin style you prefer too, the Centrecab or the Ultra Centrecab. During the design process the 2250 design was swamp tested in a controlled environment, and then rough water tested in the ‘Roaring Forties’ of New Zealand’s most southern Coastline. The two tests that Stabicraft was founded on back in 1987, and they continue to be a guiding principle of our product development today. Craig Lewis, Gulfland Marine, New Zealand’s leading Stabicraft dealer says since receiving his first 2250CC and 2250 UCC, after the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show, sales have been exceptional for both models. “It’s a boat that ticks all the boxes with our client base, and as fast as we get them in stock, they sell. They are a perfect package for the Mercury V6 and V8 outboards”, says Craig. Gulfland Marine Ph 09 4245556 craig@gulflandmarine.co.nz www.gulflandmarine.co.nz WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

FAMILY

BOATS TAKE ON

QUINTREX A

UCKLAND based Family Boats has been appointed the new New Zealand distributor for Quintrex Boats. Built-in Australia, Quintrex is Australasia’s largest manufacturer of aluminium boats with an extensive range that covers over 100 models. These include open runabouts, centre and side consoles, sports runabouts, cuddy cabins, full cabins and hardtops. In the 3.5m to 7.6m range, Quintrex has the market well covered. While the Kiwi market is already over-subscribed with locally built alloy boat choices, Quintrex is one of the few imported aluminium boat brands that has managed to get some traction in New Zealand. Part of the reason is the exceptionally wide range and the many choices available, so no matter what style, layout or features you want, Quintrex probably has it. Quintrex’s reputation for quality and innovation is also highly respected, with their hull designs and construction features at the cutting edge of alloy boat manufacturing. After years of research, Quintrex released the Apex hull design which combines on-water performance with increased hull strength, created with 4mm bottom sheets and 3mm side sheets of

pressed marine grade aluminium across the Frontier and Freestyler ranges. Peter Carlson, Managing Director of Family Boats, says that he is keen to establish the brand through a dealer network throughout the country with his Tamaki based Family Boats as the first outlet. He has already appointed several dealers, including Bay of islands Yamaha, Warren Hay Marine, (Whangarei), Firmans Marine (Napier) and Power Boat Centre (Christchurch), Marine & Outdoors (Blenheim). “I am particularly impressed with the smaller open and runabout models in the range, which are ideally suited to our local inshore fishing market”, says Peter. He added that Quintrex is by far the largest manufacturer of smaller entry-level boats and their models fill a void in the local market. Family Boats will be stocking a wide range of open boats, runabouts, bowriders and smaller cabin boats. However, all models in the Quintrex range will be available. www.familyboats.co.nz

THE TRUTH ABOUT

TACKLE BOXES PAUL WALKER LOOKS TACKLE BOXES AND WHAT PEOPLE CARRY IN THEM. Over the years that I have been fishing I’ve seen many weird and wonderful containers that people choose to carry their fishing tackle and lures around in. I’ve seen ice cream containers, glass jars, tins, cardboard boxes (they don’t last long), bags, a small suitcase, plastic bags, wooden boxes, plastic buckets and various pots. On one snapper charter a guy came with all his terminal tackle wrapped in newspaper. He had just dumped hooks, swivels, sinkers and various other bits of junk on the newspaper and wrapped it up. We thought it was his bait; boy he got some stick from us and bought a tackle box before the next trip.

ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

142

Let’s face it, tackle boxes are designed for the job and range from little fold lids that will just about fit in the palm of your hand to monsters on wheels that you need a Chevy 4x4 to pull along. It just depends on how much you have to store. If you’re like most fishos, the amount of tackle you have just keeps growing, so your next tackle box may well need to be larger than your last one. Whatever your needs though, somewhere in the tackle box range there’s one for you.

FIRST TACKLE BOX If you’re looking for your first tackle box or you’ve outgrown your old one, lay out all your terminal tackle, jigs, lures and add in bits and pieces that you need to buy and put it into groups. This will give you a good idea of what type and size of box you will need. Different types of tackle boxes do different jobs. You may just need a simple one or two tray lift-up box, or for a bit more gear a three-tray with compartments in the lid for quick access to the tackle you’re using regularly, e.g. hooks, sinkers, swivels etc. If you have heaps of gear and lures, some of the larger tackle boxes (that are really tackle stations),

have pull-out drawers and heaps of compartments and room. You just take out of them what you want for the day, put it in a smaller box and leave the big one at home holding the gear you didn’t need that day. Some of the larger boxes go a step further and instead of having drawers they have flat slide-out mini boxes inside. Sort of boxes within boxes. True multi taskers that can carry a huge amount of terminal tackle, jigs and lures.

BUY QUALITY Quality wise, the two American brands that come into NZ are fairly hard to beat. The new plastic they use can take a hell of a beating. Also look for brass or stainless hinge pins and

143

strong fastening catches. If you’re looking at a one, two or three tray, check for sturdy tray hinge arms as well. Once again, as with most fishing tackle, you get what you pay for. As for me, over the years I’ve gathered a small shop full of terminal tackle. Buying it, owning it, sorting it, sharpening it and fiddling with it is half the fun, and I have four large tackle boxes to prove the theory. So have a good look around at what is on the market – as I said before, there’s one out there to suit your needs. It’s always fun loading up a new tackle box with the anticipation of going fishing and that’s what I’m going to do right now. Grab a tackle box and go fishing!

It was hard not to be both surprised and impressed by the way this first Marco 800 performed.

In both the choppy waters of the Firth of Thames and the smoother swells out in the Motuihe Channel, Marco’s new 800 Sou’wester delivers calm comfortable rides — at 35 knots! By Mike Rose

W

CLEVER INTERIOR

HILE Marco Boats was founded back in the 1980s, it has been over the past 16 years, under the control of the Horne family, that it has become best known. Initially run by Bryan and Helen Horne, who also ran a successful engineering business, it is now managed by their son and fellow boating enthusiast, Dayne. Based in the small Waikato town of Morrinsville, the Marco portfolio now includes almost 30 distinct models, ranging from small 4m dories to a large 9.5m custom hardtop. Their latest offering is the impressive 800 Sou’wester. At 8.7m LOA, it is a slightly smaller version 950 Sou’wester that won Marco the coveted Specialist Fishing Boat Open Award at the 2018 Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show. Its first version is a smart and very sturdy looking vessel called Askari (an ancient Arabic word for ‘warrior”). It is the owner’s third boat and his second Marco (the first was a Westcoaster and the other a Marco 6.5 Sou’wester. Powered by an Evinrude ETEC G2 300hp outboard, it boasts two rather different places to call home: the Tamaki Boat Park on the upper reaches of Auckland’s Tamaki River and the Pauanui Waterways on the eastern coat of the Coromandel Peninsula.

Where many owners of large aluminium boats are primarily after a specialist fishing boat, Askari’s was adamant that the vessel must be equally suited to family cruising. He also had some fairly definite ideas on what he wanted in terms of interior design. The resulting layout is a remarkably clever one. Putting as much emphasis on crew comfort and visibility as it does on the skipper’s, the design features a dinette table to port with a single forward seat and two behind. All three have hinging backrests. This means the passenger opposite the helm can either sit facing forward in the traditional manner or reverse the backrest and commune with those on the other side of the table. Likewise, while the two seats at the back of the dinette will normally face forward while underway; at rest, with the hardtop’s bi-folds wide open, they can switch over to face aft. This allows them to be use as spotter chairs when game fishing or as a sort of mini-grandstand for those not directly involved in the fishing or other cockpit activities. The design has not only created a very versatile seating arrangement, it has also ensured an extremely comfortable and accommodating one. For example, while charging through the Motuihe Channel, we had four blokes on board.

ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

BOAT TEST

MARCO 800 SOU’WESTER

Open the doors and wheelhouse and cockpit merge as one. The dinette table has a single forward seat and two behind. Very clever. Big enough to sleep two and there’s a head included. Storage options are plentiful throughout the boat.

None of us was what you might be call tiny and yet, with the doors closed, we were all comfortably seated; and easily able to converse: the skipper at the helm and the other three around the dinette. Thanks to the height at which these seats have been placed, we were all also able to have a great view all around us. These seats have all been custom designed and built by Marco and feature the company’s standard upholstery. But, as they are fond of saying in those ads: “Wait, there’s more…” At rest and with the bi-folds open, those twin aft seats can also hinge forward to create a flat sheltered spot on which to place a portable Weber gas barbecue. With the port side of the hardtop rather busy with those versatile seats and the dinette, the starboard side has been left relatively clear, to provide access to the helm station and cabin. This lack of clutter has also left space for a couple of both attractive and functional features: a set of three timber drawers in the rear of the helm seat and pullopen trash locker (also with a smart timber fascia) in the starboard bulkhead just inside the hardtop.

COMPACT DASH

The dash is a compact, well laid out affair with twin Simrad 12” Evo3 MFD screens sitting by side beneath the Evinrude digital engine panel and above the tidy row of Carling DC toggles. In addition to the chartplotter, the MFDs are also connected to three transducers: a 1kW high Chirp, a 1kW low Chirp and a 3D. So that he can take out and safely manoeuvre the 8m-plus Askari by himself, the owner has also installed a Vetus bow thruster and the control panel for this and the Zipwake auto tabs and Maxwell rope/chain windlass complete the dash. The Simrad VHF and Fusion Apollo sound system are mounted above the windscreen. Lighting inside the hardtop is by way of a brace of ceiling mounted Hella LED white/red units and a well-placed small LED spot to illuminate the barbecue when in use. There is also a spotlight mounted on the cabin roof and twin LED cockpit floods on the back of the hardtop. Visibility from the helm and indeed from throughout the entire hardtop is superb. The windscreen is a two-pane model so there are minimal mullions to get in the way. The

side windows are both large and able to be opened and the twin hatches above are both forward facing, ensuring welcome cooling airflow on even the most stifling of trolling days. Although Askari’s cabin has not been primarily designed for overnighting, it is large enough and comfortable enough to sleep two and there is a plumbed Jabsco toilet under the centre squab if required.

The boat is covered with Ultralon U-Dek Well protected by sturdy pushpit rails, and a great place from which to fish.

The dash is a compact, well laid out affair with twin Simrad 12” Evo3 MFD screens.

The great thing about an 8.7m long vessel with a 2.7m beam is that there is no need to be parsimonious with the cockpit space. Askari’s is not only delightfully large and uncluttered, it is also smartly appointed, thanks largely to the generous amount of Ultralon U-Dek on the sole, on the coamings and on the spacious aft platform. This latter is particularly impressive: large enough to accommodate a sizeable gamefish. Well protected by sturdy pushpit rails, it is also a great place from which to fish. It is also home to a brace of large tuna tubes and, thanks to a swing section of the pushpit that doubles as a boarding ladder, a great spot for swimmers and divers to get ready. Once back on board, those who have been in the water can wash down thanks to the handily positioned pullout shower, connected to a 60-litre water tank under the hardtop floor and with water heated through the engine. The transom top is a smooth affair with a Marco custom board centrally positioned and featuring a hard plastic inset and three rod holders (there are another three in each of the side decks). The batteries and fuel filters and the like are all safely protected in their own enclosed transom lockers and there is access to the engineering connections below. The now obligatory livebait tank is in its traditional spot under the walk-thru’ on port. The side lockers (just one per side) are both wide and deep, providing easily enough space for Askari’s large fenders along with the washdown pump and a host of fishing gear. For’ard, under the bifold hardtop windows, is a dedicated space for a large Dometic chilly bin.

FAST & QUIET

In an effort to get good photos in the blustery, showerladen weather common on New Zealand’s northeastern coasts at the tail end of winter, we had two attempts: at the mouth of the Waihou River, out from Kopu on the Firth of Thames, and in the Motuihe Channel in the Hauraki Gulf. The conditions in each were very different. The Firth was choppy and hard in the way shallow water often is while the Channel was relatively smooth with just a minor swell. In both conditions, it was hard not to be both surprised and impressed by the way this first Marco 800 performed. For a start, the chop (and in the channel the big ferry wakes) made little impression on either the ride or the comfort of those on board. Even when bouncing over the worst of the chop, there were no hard landings and none of that rattling one often experiences in alloy vessels in rough water.

BOAT TEST

MARCO 800 SOU’WESTER Part of that is obviously the long waterline and the substantial displacement (3200kgs dry weight) but a lot is also due to the construction. Not only is the hull bottom a thick 6mm (with 5mm topsides), there are also eight individual longitudinal stringers and the cockpit sole has been securely welded to the hull sides. The result is an almost completely rattle-free ride, regardless of the conditions or the boat’s speed. Askari’s owner chose a 300hp Evinrude ETEC to power the 800, largely due to the fact that his two previous boats had both been Evinrude powered and he “had never had a problem”. He also like the engines’ efficiency and economy and the fact the 300 came with a 10-year warranty. It certainly performed exceptionally well for us. The 300 lifted the big Marco onto the plane with a minimum of fuss and offered steady predictable acceleration throughout the rev range with no “soft” spots. In fact, it was so smooth that, on a number of occasions, remarks were made about how sedate things were — until we looked at the instruments and realised we were barrelling quietly along at over 35 knots! (Not at all bad for a nearly 9m boat weighing in at well over three tonne!) The big Marco was also incredibly easy to turn sharply, even at full speed, with absolutely no obvious vices. It was also capable of backing up sharply into the waves and, provided the stepthru’ hatch was in place, this was a relatively dry experience. Even with the walkway open and some water sloshing in, there was no need to worry. There is a 50mm upstand between Askari’s cockpit and the cabin to ensure no water gets inside.

35 knots and loving it!

SUMMARY

There is an enormous amount to like about Marco’s new 800 Sou’wester. In terms of performance, it literally eats the nasty chop that is such a persistent feature of New Zealand’s estuarine coastal waters. It is easy and predictable to handle and clearly capable of handling big horsepower. In fact, if it were not for the fact it boasts a top speed of over 35 knots, one would be tempted to wonder if it was a touch under-powered. It’s layout, while probably not to everyone’s taste, has a lot to recommend it. The ability, while underway, to accommodate four substantial blokes, comfortably seated, is no small feat. Combine that with a seriously large cockpit and spacious platform area and you surely have a package that will appeal to those in the market for a 8m alloy powerboat.

IMPROVING with age

A bit of an overkill perhaps, but the Isuzu D-Max makes towing a breeze.

W

HEN I LEFT THE 2013 HUTCHWILCO NEW ZEALAND BOAT SHOW WITH A MCLAY FORTRESS 4.8 ON THE TOWBAR OF MY ISUZU D-MAX, I INTENDED TO HAVE THE BOAT FOR A WEEK, DO A REVIEW AND THEN GIVE IT BACK TO MCLAY BOATS. Already destined for the Australian market, the Fortress 4.8 was very plain with a tiller steer 40hp and no frills. I had recently sold my Buccaneer 685 Exess and had intended to replace it with a much smaller alloy fishing boat. Mostly the boat had to be suitable for inshore fishing, that would be easily handled by ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

myself so I could go out alone and one that I could park up in my garage. It also needed to be suitable for a mid-range tiller steer outboard as I didn’t want a centre console or small runabout as to me that takes up functional useable fishing space. I already had my Nuffield 1060 diesel tractor to launch it, which I did consider selling and getting something smaller, as the Nuffie was a bit of an overkill for a small tinnie. My maximum size to fit into my garage was around 5m overall (bow to the propeller), so that limited it a bit. In the first issue of Alloy Boat magazine, we ran a story on the rise of the tiller steer boats, and we identified nearly 20 models. These ranged from some very basic dinghies with bench seats and little else to WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

some highly spec’d models, with bait bins, live bait tanks, built-in fuel tanks and storage lockers. I also wanted a big small boat! In other words, a boat that would be suitable for handling the rougher coastal water conditions I often find myself in when fishing off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula coastline. So size wise I got it down to something around 4.5m to 5m, and I had decided the best choices lay in alloy. While I already had some knowledge of some of the major brands I was especially interested in what else was available. Man, was I spoilt for choice!

sold over 200, in either open tiller steer or as a side/centre console. I had some reservations about the casting deck and the forward bracket for the electric trolling outboard, but overall it seemed to suit what I wanted. After the show, I took the demo model home and tried it out. Power was a 40hp 2-stroke Mercury Lightning outboard and performance was okay - 22 knots/25 mph. The economy was excellent and the overall price of the rig a very keen $25,790, which also included a Toko single-axle nonbraked trailer. Well, to cut to the chase, as they say, I never sent the boat back to McLay, and I have now had it for just over six years. The garage did, however, require some modifications to the back wall as it’s surprising how much the length overall of a boat grows when you add the drawbar and the outboard. The shed

required some ‘Tim the Toolman’ modifications to fit, especially when sometime later I changed engines. CHANGES FOR THE BETTER In a previous issue of Pacific PowerBoat magazine, I detailed the layout of the Fortress 4.8 and said then that this is a boat that is unquestionably designed for one purpose….fishing. From the casting deck to the bait tanks, this is a boat designed and set up for fishermen. Features such as five blind sockets for your seats allow you to move around and not only find the best place to sit when fishing but are also useful for balancing the boat when underway. Although I got three seats with the boat, I never go out with more than two, and while one is almost permanently fixed in the starboard rear for driving, it’s incredible how many times my fishing buddies change the position

of the other one. At first, I didn’t think I would like the casting deck and felt it took up far too much space. How wrong I was. After many seasons use, I have found the casting deck great to stand on when soft baiting, although not when the seas are a little rough - and it is excellent storage. I have my 25-litre tote tank, a spare 5-litre fuel tank, battery for the Minn Kota, inflatable lifejacket bag, and other assorted gear all stowed in a totally dry space. The big hatch makes access easy. It has also proved a great place to sit when waiting for the fish to bite and McLay builds in a special platform for an electric trolling motor, plus a blind socket to mount a seat. MINN KOTA For the first season, I didn’t have an electric trolling motor, but by season two I had fitted a Minn Kota

I-Pilot ST55 onto the dedicated motor mount on the bow. BLA came to the party and helped me set it up. I have a separate 12-volt battery and BEP battery switch, for the Minn Kota, so it doesn’t drain the start battery. I am not sure the total battery live when running the Minn Kota but I had close to 6 hours on one trip, and it still wasn’t flat. After using the ST55 for several years, I changed in 2018 to a Minn Kota Riptide Terrova 55 with i-Pilot Link, which will still provide the same 55lb of thrust has the advantage of being able to ‘talk’ to the MFD. To make use of the i-Pilot link I also needed to upgrade, from a Humminbird 788ci HD DI Combo to a Humminbird Helix 9. This features a 9” display, MEGA Side Imaging+, MEGA Down Imaging+ and Dual Spectrum CHIRP Sonar. It also includes GPS mapping with built-in Bluetooth, Ethernet networking capabilities, AutoChart Live with depth, vegetation and bottom hardness mapping. So now I can sit back and operate the Minn Kota from the Humminbird screen, although I also have the back-up of a remote which I carry on a lanyard around my neck when using the Minn Kota. What I like about it is the GPS capability, which means when I am drifting and hit a productive spot, I push spot lock and can hold position no matter what the depth. The iTracks function allows me to record my track and lock it in if I want to go over it again in the future. While the Minn Kota may look a little cumbersome, it has a well-designed one-hand stow and deploy with Lift-Assist.

DRUM WINCH When I first got the boat, I installed a small capstan with a BEP switch, which meant all anchoring chores had to be carried out at the bow. But last season I thought there had to be a better way, and I liked the idea of a drum winch. After some research, I settled on an all stainless steel Viper S Series Micro 1000 from Kiwi Yachting. The Micro 1000 has a submersible electric motor coupled with stainless steel marine gearbox, solid 28mm stainless steel main shaft with three support bearings and comes with a 5-year Viper warranty. Constructed from 8mm plate 316 marine grade stainless steel (hand polished to a mirror finish) the Micro’s drum rotates at a fall rate of 45mtrs per minute. The best thing is I can do all my anchoring without leaving the comfort of the helm seat. It was easy to fit inside the anchor locker, and although I did have some issues working out the right angle for the warp and chain from the deck roller to the drum, it all came together in the end. I had to make a small mod to the anchor locker hatch to allow a clean uninhibited path for the anchor rode, which in

the case of the Micro, is a far more than required 60m of 6mm double braid rope and 6m of 6mm short link chain. I also got a new Lewmar Delta anchor and an auto deploy bowsprit system from McLay. STORAGE The boat came standard with four-rod holders in the coamings, to which I have added another two. I also have a setline I occasionally use and the vertical rod holder I use to mount this also doubles as another rod holder. I stow my rods when not in use in flexible side racks that I glued onto each side of the hull, although now I have a gaff and net permanently mounted on one side, I only have mounts for four rods. I added a Seven Seas bait board which also gives me a couple more rod holders, so there’s no shortage. The Seven Seas bait board has some great features such as some unique angles for the rods, a deep recess for the knives and is easily removed off the stainless mounting for cleaning. The side shelves have worked out handy for storage and as there was no place to mount the fishfinder I made a small side console which also doubled up as somewhere to put my keys, phone and sunnies. I have never been very pleased with it and so before the mid-year Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show I had McLay send me up one of their factory-made Fortress side consoles. While it was originally designed to have a steering wheel fitted, I wanted to retain my tiller steer, so mounted it a lot lower than usual. I put the Humminbird MFD in the middle, with the Viper auto switch and Mercury tacho/ fuel gauge alongside. Below that, I now have a small glovebox and still, have

plans to fit a two-tier fishing tackle box in the front. Plus if I sell the boat, it would be a simple change to raise the console and mount a steering wheel. Either side of the engine well is deep lockers with So Pac hatches. The port side one I use as a primary kill tank, although I could plumb it as a live bait tank - maybe next season. In the other one, I stow spare ropes, the sea anchor and various bits. Another significant improvement I made last season was to have the boat dressed up with U-Dek, which I have on the side decks, casting deck and in large clip-on panels on the chequer plate floor. Makes it warm underfoot and the U-Dek is easily cleaned no matter how much fish guts, bait or blood you put on it. Originally my safety gear such as flares and EPIRB were stowed in the side trays, but I now have all the flares in a Life Cell, and the EPIRB is fixed to the new console. The Life Cell ensures all safety equipment is contained in one place when abandonment is the only option. The Life Cell is designed to automatically float from the bracket in the event of being submerged.

My new side console was a great addition. After using the ST55 for several years, I changed in 2018 to a Minn Kota Riptide Terrova 55 with i-Pilot Link. The Viper drum winch has made a huge difference to anchoring.

Unlike grab bags, Life Cells float to act as a secure hand-hold, keeping all crew together and as a stable platform to assist in the deployment of flares and other safety equipment. WRAP UP When I got the Fortress, it was already coated in Nyalic, a nylonic, crystal clear polymeric resin that provides years of protection against chemical, environmental and ultraviolet corrosion. However, I wanted to “bling’ the boat up and flash it with some fancy graphics and signwriting. The first guy I called was Steve at LetterRip, a company we have had a lot to do with over the years for all our signs on boats, cars and at shows. Steve suggested wrapping the boat in vinyl. Compared with the cost of repainting, wraps are fantastically competitive, durable and longlasting, and would allow me to transform the boat for a fraction of the cost of a spray job. Steve transformed the appearance of the boat within a few hours, and it looked fabulous. I get a lot of comments about the jet-powered snapper. The selfadhesive vinyl used is hard-wearing, durable and will not fade or go cloudy like paint or gel-coat. It is also easy to clean and repair. After six years and a lot of hard wearing, I am amazed and how it has lasted. Apart from a few scratches caused when alongside a wharf a few years ago, it is relatively unmarked. Might be time to call Steve and get a whole new look. I also got London Auto Trimmers to make me a special all-weather cover, so the boat is well protected outside. It started live in a garage but I somehow lost that to one of my sons who brought a drift car and didn’t want to leave it out in the weather. Thanks dad! ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

REPOWER While the 40hp that came with the boat was okay, it just didn’t have enough power for me, so I quickly chose to move up to 60hp and also went from the basic 2-stroke Mercury to a 4-stroke. As I already mentioned, I wanted to stay with a tiller steer boat, and the 60hp had that option. However, I did upgrade from the basic tiller handle to the Big Tiller. This is an amazing piece of equipment and great to use, giving you more room in the boat and simple hands-on control of your engine. The tiller arm is designed with an integrated shift, trim and throttle controls and adjustment knobs that allow for easy modification of the tiller handle angle, throttle handle and valve tension. The trim switch is located at the end of the handle, and it’s perfectly placed for instant use as you run the boat in different sea states. Great when coming into the beach and needing to tilt the motor right up. The friction on the tiller arm pivot and throttle can be adjusted, and the tiller arm can be lifted and locked into one of three positions.

Mercury 90 4S with the same propeller, which has seen the top speed move up to 33.5 knots (38.5mph). Interestingly the 75150hp Mercury 4 stroke are all based on the same inline four cylinders, 3-litre block and all weight the same. Might be time to move up to a 115hp I reckon GREAT RIDE I have now had over six seasons to evaluate the performance of the hull, and for a boat of its size it comes up trumps. To be fair, the worst water I have had to run home in was about 1m, but that was enough, and while I had to slow down for the conditions, the ride was excellent. The wide spray rails forward, and fine entry bow shape really dissipates the water, and I have yet to drop the bow and take any water over it. As I have said before, while it rides exceptionally well for its size, you need to remember that this is still a small boat. McLay Boats doesn’t skimp on construction and builds its boats tough, the Fortress 4.8 is no exception. The boat comes with a 4mm plate bottom and 3mm sides, with a dry hull weight of 370kg. The fully welded 3mm treadplate sole helps provide a real stiffness to the boat, and all the cavities underneath are either filled with closed cell foam or sealed as air chambers. They meet both Australian and CE standards, which makes them virtually unsinkable. Overall I have found the McLay Fortress 4.8 to be precisely what I need, and it suits my fishing needs ideally. Okay so I can’t go too far offshore, but if I need to, I can always find someone with a bigger boat. Someone commented to me that there is no canopy, but then I don’t need one. If it’s hot, I wear a hat and if it rains I get wet. But hey, that’s boating.

After some early trials, we settled on a 13” three-blade alloy propeller and the engine set on the second hole. Top speed, with the engine trimmed well out at 5950 rpm was 30.5 knots (35mph), which seemed quick when hanging onto the tiller. The good thing is there was very little torque feedback, so it was still easy to steer. In 2016 I traded up to a Mercury 75 4S, and we did a propeller shoot out, using eleven different Mercury props to find the one that best suited the new engine. After testing a wide range, we settled on a Spitfire X7 15”, which gave best overall performance and fuel economy. Top speed was 30.7 knots (35.4mph) with a fuel figure of 27.6 lph. Move onto the 2018-19 season, and I have been running a

The McLay 741 Raptor brings a whole new dimension to amphibious boats and has some very unique features that distance it from its competitors.

E ALL KNOW THAT AMPHIBIOUS BOATS ARE THE ANSWER TO ANYONE LIVING CLOSE TO THE WATER AND WANTING A QUICK AND EFFORTLESS LAUNCHING OF THEIR ‘TRAILER’ BOAT. Turn on the drive system and your wheels take you to the water, where you raise them and then carry on boating as normal. It’s the same coming back. No trailer, no tractor or tow vehicle on the beach. Simple, easy and a mode of transport that has been perfected in New Zealand! The newest player on the market, Tectrax, is 100% electric, driven completely by batteries as opposed to hydraulics that are used by other amphibious system manufacturers. At the recent Hutchwilco NZ Boats Show two boats were displayed with the new Tectrax AWED system, one being the McLay 741 Raptor. Considering the word raptor is derived from «rapere,» a Latin word which means to seize or capture, the new amphibious McLay is aptly named. After all what happens to the front wheel when you enter the water? It is seized and captured inside its own hidden compartment. Probably not the reason Steve McLay, the designer of the Raptor chose the name Raptor, but it works for me. Based on the 701 Cruiser, the Raptor does have a number of significant differences that sets it apart from the model it has its roots in. Obviously the Tectrax system is the biggest change, but the hull has seen some small changes also. While the 701 Cruiser comes standard with a 5mm hull, the 741 Raptor is 6mm hull bottom. This was done to reinforce the structural integrity of the boat due to the extra 580 kgs which is carried over the bow and stern areas. The gullwings either side have been extended 20mm, which gives wider flat areas aft to handle the extra weight. The rest of the running surface has remained unchanged apart from the pod extension which is now an integral part of the hull. This has increased the buoyancy at the stern to compensate for the extra weight of the two wheels and Tectrax operating gear. The profile of the boat above the chine remains unchanged and in fact if you were to put a 701 Cruiser alongside on the water you would not see any difference. And that is what is so special and unique about the 741 Raptor that sets it apart from all other amphibious boats. “When I decided to build an amphibious boat, I needed a point of difference and right from the start I wanted to hide the wheels from sight when not in use, be it on the water or on a trailer, so it retains the great looks that the 701 is renowned for”, says Steve McLay. Also Steve wanted to have an amphibious boat that eliminated the risk of fishing lines getting caught around the wheels as well as the anchor getting caught around the front wheel and that the front wheel had to have no effect on rough water handling ability or spraying water everywhere. He adds that he approached Tectrax early on in the programme because he liked the fact they had

a totally electric system and were happy to supply the system to builders. However, it was a close collaboration between Steve, Tectrax engineers and an ex-Team NZ designer who was involved with the foils on their AC cat, that were required to sort out all the complex technical aspects of the retractable bowdoor. “It wasn’t a simple thing to do and took a lot of thought between us all, but eventually, just in time for the release of the boat at the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show we got it right”, says Steve. After the wheel is retracted, the ‘bomb bay’ bow door closes with the help of an hydraulic ram and locks the door in place. It takes less than 30 secs from the time you start retracting the wheel till fully closed. Residual water that remains in the enclosed space quickly drains out through a venturi. All the Tectrax’s system is covered with an IP69 ingress protection rating. The rear wheels retract up into a recessed wheel pod and are also completely hidden from view. Steve adds that the retractable bow door is a pivotal point of difference that sets them apart from all other amphibious boat manufacturers.

INTERNAL CHANGES One of the downsides of having the retractable front wheel is due to the enclosed wheel housing there is now less space in the forward cabin. While the prototype model I tested still had a couple of short quarter berths, plus storage spaces beneath, all this can be changed. While the central position of the wheel housing cannot

ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

be altered, the rest is customisable. The Raptor is available in a sleeper version, that has the cabin bulkhead and wheelhouse back 400mm . This gives you space for two full length berths and even an enclosed head. So while the wheel enclosure looks intrusive, there can be plenty of available space made if you are overnighting. When it comes to the seating layout it is very much the same as the 701 Cruiser with plenty of options. Our boat had two swivelling bucket seats with alloy box bases, with storage draws and rear cushions with a live bait tank to starboard and a kill tank to port. Due to the extra on-board equipment needed to run the Tectrax system, there was no room for the live bait tank in its usual transom position. “Seating is completely optional and we have even had a request for a ramp and wheel chair mount so nothing is impossible”, says Steve. While I would have expected a lot of extra controls on the dash for the Tectrax system, not so. There is just one display panel which includes the rocker switches for the wheel functions and a joy stick for forward and reverse operation. Tectrax are in the process of developing the intergration of their system with the various chart plotters available. Alongside the Simrad MFD is space for whatever else you need, such as our Lectrotab trim tabs (interceptor style tabs optional) and Savwinch winch controls. Fishermen will appreciate the short hardtop complete with rocket launcher that offers weather protection but doesn’t impose into your fishing room. The 741 Raptor has plenty of that with 3.6 sqm of workable

There is just one Tectrax display panel with rocker switches for the wheel functions and a joy stick. The retractable bow door is a pivotal point of difference that sets the Raptor 741 apart from all other amphibious boat manufacturers. There is no hint of being an amphibious boat when on the water. Seating styles are optional. The 72 volt Lithium ion battery, a pair of electronic boxes, outboard and house batteries, are under the aft deck area.

cockpit from the seats to the transom, so you and three mates can fish without encroaching on each other’s space. From the inside of the transom to the forward cabin bulkhead it’s a full 3.4m long, with 2m headroom under the hardtop. There is an extended soft canopy available if you want more weather protection and even a full camper pack if you are serious about overnighting. An enclosed rear bulkhead for the wheelhouse is also available. Storage is provided in wide side shelves which can handle dive bottles and in rear lockers. There are no storage lockers under foot as all the space under the U-Deck covered cockpit sole is taken up with a 220 litre fuel tank and for buoyancy. Apart from being very quiet, one of the other advantages of having an electric amphibious system as opposed to hydraulics is there is no negative impact on deck space with all components tucked away neatly. All the components; 72 volt Lithium ion battery, a pair of electronic boxes, outboard and house batteries, are under the aft deck area so there is nothing to take up any floor space.

PERFORMANCE Compared to the 701 Cruiser, the 741 Raptor is around 600 kgs heavier so you would expect a drop in overall performance. However, it was less than I expected. Top speed is still a very respectable 32.5 knots (37.4 mph), with the Mercury 225hp V6. While you may drop a little in top end speed, what you gain is a boat that rides even better in the

moderate to rough water due to the extra weight. Also it is extremely stable and with four on one side the heal is very minimal. While the boat is rated to 250hp, I don’t think you need it as the Mercury 225 provides plenty of power. It’s a quick boat to plan and took just seconds from 0-50km/h and had great low power through the range, all the way to 6000 rpm. to reach the maximum speed of 32.5 knots. I not only ran the boat in the calm waters off Manly Beach on the Hibiscus Coast, Auckland, but also took as run in some really confused sea up with up to 1m swells, with a 25 knots of NE breeze. Even Steve commented how well the boat rode with the extra weight. 5000 rpm @ 50 km/h all the way from Manly to Mahurangi and back. An impressive ride all the way.

SUMMARY The McLay 741 Raptor is certainly an amphibious boat like no other and offers a unique alternative to a well proven system. By incorporating the Tectrax all-wheel drive system into one of their standard hulls, McLay have turned an already great boat into something even better. Certainly Kiwi ingenuity at its very best. It was also great to hear that there is already a second and larger model in the pipeline and even talk of a couple of smaller model Raptors. Love to see my McLay 4.8 Fortress with legs. Might even sell my trusty Nuffield 1060. Well maybe!

TECTRAX - ANOTHER AMPHIBIOUS ALTERNATIVE Released at the recent Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show, Tectrax’s is a unique and revolutionary electric amphibious system driven completely by batteries as opposed to hydraulics used by other amphibious system manufacturers. The All Wheel Electric Drive (AWED) powers your vessel quietly down the ramp and into the water using the very latest in battery technology and fly-by-wire electronics. A Kiwi innovation, Tectrax’s systems are produced in Taupo, in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand and is the brainchild of Rob Gower, who along with a team of really talented engineers from various disciplines have developed a genuinely remarkable alternative to the amphibious boat market. While Tectrax has its roots back to 2003, it took a number of years to achieve the result he wanted. Whilst completely different to his initial concepts, the final Tectrax product was only made possible with the recent advancements in battery technology. After modifications and refinement, Gower protected his ingenious ideas, took out patents and then in 2015 put together an expert team, creating a new and revolutionary electric hub motor driven amphibious system. This fully electronic system is reliable, quiet and low maintenance with no annual servicing required while supported by an industry leading warranty. There are currently four models within the All wheel electric drive range (AWED), that can be fitted to boats displacing under 2,500kg, and up to 4,000kg. The T2500 and T3000 models are suitable for boats under and between 2500-3000 kg, (6.5-7.5m), with the T3500 and T4000 designed for boats from 7.0m to 8.0m+ and all up weight of up to 3500kg-4000kg respectively. The Tectrax system adds only 580kg – 602kg to the vessel depending on battery options chosen. Standard on all models is the AWED, ABS, Fly by Wire/Traction control and with high torque motors are designed to drive on a gradient of up to 22%. Tectrax use a modular Lithium ion battery system that provides a wide range of configuration options to meet your run time preferences. Start with the standard battery package for 35 minutes of drive time at up to 8km/h, or you can simply add more batteries if required. Once back at home, you only need to plug into a standard wall socket and recharge. Charge time from a domestic socket is two hours for the T2500 and T3000 and four hours for the T3500 and T4000. Tectrax is designed for boat builders to fit during the build stage, with a growing number of New Zealand aluminium trailer boat manufacturers, such as Senator and McLay already doing so. The modular battery system allows for flexible component placement to optimise sea-keeping performance, while electronics and hydraulics are installed below decks to preserve valuable deck real estate. The Tectrax system carries an IP69 (water ingress) rating for its motors and in water equipment. It has a one-year commercial and government warranty and a one-year recreational warranty on the hub motors, electrics, electronics and hydraulics and a two-year warranty on the batteries and mechanicals. www.tectrax.co.nz

ELECTRIC REELS DESIGNED FOR THE DEPTHS

Believe it or not, electric fishing reels are not a new invention, with the first electric reels invented in 1913 by McClure & Munn. Nothing like what we have today, but it was a start. BY ALISTAIR MAIR

ven Ettore Bagatti, the car designer, had a crack at developing them for big game fishing in the early 1940s. The war put paid to Bugatti’s ideas, and more essential designs took his focus. Closely following Ettore, was Thomas C Fanshier from Oklahoma in 1941, his ideas differed from the previous crop of inventors, which had combined the rod and reel as one unit. Fanshier’s idea was a separate unit which attached to the reel. Many other inventors had a crack at designing electric reels through the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. The first electric reel to go into production was developed by two brothers Edward and Dominic Perinoni of Los Gatos, California. Named the Coit electric reel, it was patented on 17 June 1952. After three years of trying, it was a far cry from today’s 12v powered reels and even included a battery-powered drag device to prevent spool overrun. Through the 50/60’s, several companies attempted to develop electric reels, such as Ercoa, Zedco, Old Pal and a few Japanese companies.

ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

ELECTRIC FISHING REELS

HOW THEY WORK

Electric reels incorporate an electric motor that reels in the line automatically without winding the handle. They also include a digital line display to indicate the amount of line deployed or retrieved by the reel, but this development took some time to come to fruition. Some of the early Japanese and American electric reels were motors which attached to game reels and had very few features. They only reeled in with a very basic on or off design. These units bolted onto existing game reels and required quite a bit of technical ability to install. Today reels arrive in a box ready to be filled with super braid lines and deploy to the depths to catch deep living species such as Hapuka, Bass, Swordfish and many other tasty varieties. Electric reels provide a way to plumb the depths of the ocean without the long task of winding a handle to retrieve hundreds of metres of line quickly and effortlessly. You can fish electric either in a strong rod holder or in a fighting belt and harness. Electric reels can also be of great assistance to anglers who don’t have the physical ability to wind in big fish due to injury or other physical handicaps. They come in varying sizes for lines as low as 20-30lbs right up to 100-200lb line. Companies like Miya Epoch have been making electric reels for commercial fishing purposes that are capable of handling multi-hook lines for catching marketable species. Most of the reels available in NZ are aimed at fishing deep drop styles to target Bass and Hapuka. PE or polyethelene lines in the 50-100lb range are matched to specific deep drop rods which have aluminium bent butts and quite fast or quick actions with a strong backbone, to raise these weighty critters. Attached to these rods and reels will be a dropper rig which consists of a two hook ledger with circle hooks and plenty of weight to deploy the rig to the depths. In shallower drops between 200-300 metres, 40-60 ounces of lead is attached to the bottom of the rig. In deeper drops, weights up to 1 kg can be required to get the rig down. Bait is a subjective thing and really depends on what species you are targeting. Bass and Hapuka,

for example, are very hungry and surprisingly aggressive towards live bait. So a mixture of squid, skipjack fillets and live Jack Mackeral will almost certainly attract them. Two manufacturers dominate the recreational market when it comes to electric reels, Shimano and Daiwa while there are plenty more brands available, especially online, these two provided well-proven and fully backed models that are proven to work.

motor. It’s robust, has a nice LCD digital line counter and very well built. Not a cheap reel but well worth it. Available in a combo with rod for around $2000.00. The Shimano Forcemaster 9000 holds 1800 yards of 50lb braid 1030 yards of 80lb braid. It has 55lbs of drag, a gear ratio 3.1:1 and 72kgs winding power. This is a cheaper version of the Beastmaster and functionality of its big brother, well made and very capable. It can be found in a combo with rod for around $1500.00. The Plays family of power assisted reels features fine dot LCD screens that improves readability in most light conditions. Shimano’s precision 5-ARB bearings and super free spool technology reduce friction and heat when dropping baits into the depths. There are three models in the range; 1000, 3000 and 4000. The new 1000 has a 5:1 gear ratio, 6kg max drag, 70cm per crank retrieval and holds 430 yards of 30lb braid. The 3000 max drag is a higher 15kg and holds 440 yards of 40lb braid, while the 4000 has the same 15kg max load but will carry 550 yards of 60lb braid. It can be found in a combo with rod for around $1000.00.

Shimano has three in their electric reel series, the Beastmaster, Forcemaster and the Plays. The Shimano Beastmaster 9000 holds 1870 yards of 50lb braid and 940 yards of 100lb braid, gear ratio 3.1:1. Max drag 55lbs. This is an easy reel to use with a very smooth drag. It also has a whopping 250lbs of winding power through a brushless

DAIWA

Daiwa offers two model ranges, the Tanacom which has three different sizes and the Seaborg. The Tanacom series of reels are the core of our electric reel range from Daiwa. At the heart of the Tanacom is a planetary gearing system, that provides 16 points of contact always. A high-powered electric motor drives the gearing to deliver raw fish pulling power. The digital line counter allows the angler to know they are always in the “zone”.

The latest addition to the Daiwa family heralds a new era in electric reels. The Seaborg MJ1200 is a formidable beast with the capacity for 1000m of 80lb braid or 800m of 100lb braid and offers 33kg of drag. It has 300lbs of winding power and 2.9:1 gear ratio. This reel is a real brute and has a mega twin gear ratio system which allows the user to switch between mega-power mode and mega speed mode. It also encompasses a drag radiator to dissipate heat, ensuring, consistent endless drag throughout the fight. This reel is truly capable of landing real monsters, even the mighty swordfish. At the cost of around $2500.00, it’s at the top of the cost tree but offers a lot and delivers even more. The Tanacom 500 to the range, specifically for the inshore angler and anglers with disabilities or reduced capabilities to keep them out on the water. Small and compact these reels are great for catching inshore species such as Snapper, Terakihi, Kahawai and Trevally. The Daiwa Tanacom 1000 holds 1100 yards of 60lb braid and 900 yards of 80lb braid, gear ratio 2.3:1 and 70kgs of winding power. This reel is at the lower end in price but performs very well. These can be picked up paired with a rod for around $1000.00, which is very reasonable for those beginning their electric reel experience. Well designed and quite simple to operate.

STACER 429 SEAMASTER

AGILE + EASY By Richard Milner

T

HE AUSTRALIAN STACER SEAMASTER HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE 1980S AND HAS ALSO TAKEN SEVERAL OTHER NAMES SUCH AS THE SEA WAY AND BAY MASTER. Don’t be fooled though as the latest editions are significantly different from all other models and incorporate their concave designed hull. Fibreglass boat manufacturers have been using the gullwinged design with considerable success for years. Stacer has recognised this, and with a significant investment of tooling have now incorporated this concept into their design. It gives a sharp, deep V entry that efficiently moves the water away from the bow, encouraging a very flat and nose level attitude. Plus it flattens ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

out to the stern, maximising stability. Deep topsides allow the passengers to sit comfortably in the boat with wide gunwales, that we normally find on much larger boats. This separates the Stacer 429 Seamaster from the average alloy dinghy. It was also great to see that the gunwale was welded from the bow to the stern, which is a considerable water tightening improvement on earlier spot welded models. I must confess with a much larger glass boat the ease of hitching the boat up on your own, quickly glugging in a few litres of fuel and bait then heading for the ramp have long gone. With a larger trailer boat, it is now for me almost military precision planning often starting the day with an ocean tanker of fuel. When it

comes to the Stacer Seamaster, I loved the ease of doing everything from filling the tote tank to the effortless launching. The whole process was quick, easy and is sure to put the fun back in boating.

First impressions were a well thought out and functional boat. At just a tickle over $30,000 with a Yamaha 50hp four-stroke, this inshore boat certainly packs some punch. It is great to see the walkthrough windscreen giving outstanding access to the anchor box, allowing you to get right up front and not strain to reach the cleat and fairlead. We all know what it’s like to reach over a windscreen on a rough day, and this boat certainly gave me the impression of safety. The windscreen is also quite upright giving you the ability to stand up when manoeuvring from the ramp, beach or tucking into the favoured fishing spot which is a great leap from smaller boats having that sit down only helm position. The helm is also well portioned with a pedestal seat, and

WELL THOUGHT OUT Although the weather was stunning, I was a little apprehensive about the smaller almost dinghy style, that I was soon to take on the water. In my early childhood days on my grandfather’s boat, we used to rocket off to Waiheke Island in a little Seaforce, and I wondered if those memories would come flooding back of rough and tumble boating. Nothing was further from that truth. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

although this model didn’t have an adjustable seat, at 192cm tall I was not cramped, which is surprising for the size of the boat. The dash while basic, with the Yamaha smart gauges and MFD, is functional and all necessary information is easy to see. The passenger side has enough room on the dash area for a Fusion marine radio and a VHF. Both front seats have footrests, and there is plenty of places to hold on. In the aft of the boat, the multiperson bench seat arrangement would fit three adults comfortably across the back. A bonus for the avid angler or the spotter watching the kids on the water toys, the bench seat repositions forward so you can sit facing aft. It is easy to move with no fuss and adds a great dimension to this design. As with all small boats, space is a premium, and this well thought out feature maximises the use of the available space The standard features on the Stacer 429 Seamaster include the two pedestal seats, fantastic wrap around windscreen, bimini canopy with optional clears, port side glove box, huge side storage pockets, and a large storage bin in the bow under the anchor box. Full-width transom bench seating with two seating positions, bow and stern cleats, and rails, plus two transom-mounted transducer plates. Just like most alloy boats, the customisable options are endless. The Stacer 429 can accommodate a drum winch, underfloor fuel tank, live bait tank, the much needed bait station, painted topsides or vinyl wrapping. There’s also tons of space for more rod holders and dive gear mounting points. The aft area is also well thought out with the fuel ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

tank and battery box hidden away and not taking up precious floor space. There is nothing worse than falling over fuel tanks. The battery was mounted on the aft starboard side but with a little thinking could be positioned in the centre allowing for a second fuel tank extending the range. You can always find time to hit one more fishing spot before heading home. The engine box is fully built into the transom, and this feature separates the Stacer 429 Seamaster from other small alloy boats that bolt the engine on extension boxes or transom plates. This gives excellent safety and peace of mind, especially in a following sea. This coupled with a transom step on the port side and ladder on the starboard side, gives greater functionality for getting in and out of the water; be it diving, swimming or on and off water toys. WINTER WEATHER The Sea trial went exceptionally well, partly due to the fantastic winter weather we experienced. We were lucky enough to have a container ship give some larger wake and so utilised it to simulate a 1m swell. Into the waves, the boats gull-wing design from the stem to the chine moved water away and kept the foredeck dry. I was happy this boat was able to deliver a dry deck. In a following sea, the boat was stable, and the helm answered effortlessly. The boat rode very well, and it was pleasant to find that at WOT it was just as comfortable, if not more so than just on the plane or at mid revs. I could see myself taking this boat further afield to the Noises or the bottom end of Waiheke Island. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

As tested with the 50hp Yamaha four stroke the boat had plenty of get up and go, and the holeshot was just a sniff over 5 seconds with a full tank of fuel and two typical Kiwi blokes. The Stacer 429 Seamaster can be powered with smaller outboards and does come recommended with a 40hp engine, but for the few dollars more it’s worth having the larger engine with increased displacement. Overall the Stacer 429 is a fantastic entry level

inshore alloy boat priced well and within easy reach, for more kiwis to get out on the water. I was impressed with how easy it was to get ready to go, launching and retrieving on my own and parking was a breeze with a smaller single axle trailer. With the maximum payload of 5 adults, it really is an excellent solution to getting out there and enjoying all that New Zealand’s waterways have to offer safely, effortlessly and without fuss.

STABICRAFT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MARKET LEADERS AND THE RECENTLY RELEASED 2500 ULTRACAB XL IS NO EXCEPTION. BARRY THOMPSON CHECKS OUT THIS NEW AND VERY DISTINCTIVE ADDITION TO THE STABICRAFT RANGE.

T’s a while since I have done a review on a Stabicraft, so it was with particular interest that I took up Craig Lewis’s offer to have a run in the new 2500 Ultracab XL with a Mercury 250 V8 Verado he had just rigged. As Craig is both New Zealand’s top Stabicraft and Mercury dealer, it only seemed right to accept. I have had some experience already with the Mercury V8 and what an engine. Power plus from zero to 6000 rpm and as I was to find out, a perfect match for the big Stabi. Gulf Harbour on a crisp winter morning was the venue and while the sea was calm and the air chilly, driving from inside the wheelhouse left me warm and comfortable. The first thing you notice about the Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL is the distinguishing reverse sheer windscreen, which was popularized in the Alaskan crab boat industry in the

1970s, where the leaned forward glass wheelhouse was designed to help keep the breaking seas impacting the glass. In Alaska, this fashion is still referred to as a ‘crabber cabin’ design. Anyone who has watched the popular Deadliest Catch TV Series will know what sort of seas these boats go through and while it is highly unlikely that you will ever experience them in your Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab XL, the principle is still the same. The reverse sheer, on the Stabicraft, is not acute but it does make a difference to avoiding reflection of instruments at night and cuts glare during the day (especially for salt covered glass), as well as offering excellent visibility from the pilothouse helm. While traditionally more associated with work boats, the reverse sheer screen has become an accepted style in the recreational market, especially in Scandanavia, France and Alaska. been fast in coming forward with reverse sheer screen designs, and it is only the aluminium manufacturers, such as Stabicraft that have embraced it. Stabicraft’s first was the 2500 Ultracab XL in 2015, but it was the 2750 Ultracab that set a new benchmark. With the release of the 2750 Ultracab a few years ago, Stabicraft new they had hit on the right formulae, so it was only natural that smaller versions would follow. The new Ultracab series now comprises three models: 2250, 2500 and 2750, all of which are available in a more upspeced XL version.

SINGLE OR TWIN The Stabicraft 2500 Ultra Cab is single, or twin outboard optioned, with our test boat running a Mercury 250 Verado V8. This engine has some serious power and acceleration is impressive. The transition is smooth and seamless and helped by the addition of Active Trim, there is hardly any ‘hump’ as you get on the plane. It is extremely quiet, and I love the new stylish cowling profile. Maximum speed was 34 knots @ 6000 rpm, and the boat had a real sweat cruise spot around 4500 ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

rpm @ 23-25 knots. With the standard 378-litre fuel tank that means you have a range of just over around 210 nm at between 4000-5000 rpm. I was impressed with the Mercury Active Trim, which is an integrated GPS, speed-based automatic engine trim system. This intuitive, hands-free system continually adjusts engine trim based on changes in boat speed. There are five adjustable profiles available so you can select one that suits the most efficient running attitude to compensate for changes in boat loading, weather, propping and your preference for how you like your boat to run. Push the throttle down or bring it back and the engine trims accordingly in sync with the trimming preset you have entered. You are not 100% locked into the Active Trim and still have the option of using the manual trim buttons. While I did, it was only to see the difference and quickly went back to leaving the Active Trim to do all the work. All I needed was a little tab to compensate with the heel of the boat, something that big hardtops are especially susceptible too. We played around with different optimum trim settings and what a difference. The boat responded accordingly to the boat manoeuvers, and you could clearly hear the Active Trim working when I hooked the boat into the tight hard wheel to wheel turns or from the holeshot. I agree with Mercury when they say that you don’t need any knowledge of trimming an engine if you have Active Trim. What I found interesting was the big difference in speed and fuel consumption between the different profile settings. They were not as I would have expected, with the fastest speed (34 knots) recorded with the Active Trim on the more trimmed-in preset position 1, which dropped to 30 knots on the midrange trimmed preset position 3. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

There was also a noticeable difference in fuel consumption at the top end with 76 lph on position 3 and 85 lph on position 1. But they equalled out with an identical 130 nautical mile range. The question is, do you want the best speed or best fuel economy? With Active Trim, you certainly get that choice. However, while we achieved the results we did with the Stabicraft 2500 Ultracab, that doesn’t mean every boat will be the same, so it will be a bit of trial and error to find out what is the optimum position for your boat set up.

WEEKENDER No question this is a boat set up for extended overnighting as much as it is the ultimate fishing platform. Stabicraft certainly are known as seriously tough fishing boats and are used throughout the world, from chasing salmon in Alaska, Torsk in Sweden to Barramundi in Nth Queensland and snapper and kingfish back home. The owner of our test boat likes to both fish and family cruise and with a small family has set his boat accordingly for trips away with boys to family day trips and weekends. There is a dedicated accommodation space forward, divided from the pilothouse with bulkheads and a central curtain for privacy. However, the bottom half of the bulkheads

can be folded down to increase the length of the two full-length berths to over 2m. There is also an infill to transform the space into a large single berth and a plumbed-in head under the centre squab. The cabin has plenty of storage, plus ample light and ventilation from a sizeable overhead deck hatch as well as side ports. The pilothouse style of the 2500 Ultracab XL lends itself to winter boating. Close the rear door and sliding side windows and turn on the heater and you have one very cosy bolthole for those cold, wet and chilly nights. However, in the summer it gives you all-weather protection, but still with plenty of natural ventilation. The layout is typical of a big hardtop with a helm and galley to starboard, with dinette and companion seat to port. The electronics are optional, and there is plenty of dash space for large MFDs, but still leaving room for all the other controls, switches and instruments. The fully adjustable helm seat, with bolster, means you can set the driving position in a position that suits you. Aft, the galley is enough to cater for the few people you would have aboard overnight, with a sink unit, hob and storage. Opposite is the dinette area which comes with an ingeniously concealed dining table that drops from a wall space when required. The

The pilothouse style allows for a reasonable size dinette and galley. Big dash allows for big MFD, such as this one from Simrad. All you need in a compact galley. A Maxwell drum winch is hidden from view in the deep anchor locker.

front seat slides forward, and you then have seating for three at a surprisingly large table. Our boat also had a fridge under the forward seat and another large cooler bin under the aft seat. This was accessed from the cockpit, with the hatch doubling up as another seat. It seems everywhere you look around the 2500 there is another semi-concealed seat just waiting to be popped up. Another cool feature is the sliding aft bench seat at the rear of the pilothouse, which not only gives you more seated area, but also transforms into another single berth. All up it’s a boat that will easily sleep three and four if required. There is loads of storage under the pilothouse sole, as well as the cockpit, all of which is covered in matching grey U-Dek.

If it’s space you want for fishing, then the 2500 Ultracab XL provides it. The cockpit is nearly 4 sqm of fishing workspace, surrounded by rod storage above, in side trays and below. There is a serious fish station in the centre of the dual access transom, which can incorporate a live-bait tank. With the addition of high rails around the stern platform, your fishing space grows even more. Wide flat side decks are to the right height for fishing, but also if you’re into diving, they make water access a breeze. A pair of large drop-down boarding ladders make getting back aboard just as easy. Underfloor lockers look after the catch and somewhere to stow the dive gear. I liked the cantilevered seat bases at the transom which give access to storage areas and the multitude of drink and tackle holders on the side coamings. This is a boat that comes with a lot of standard features which are often on the extras list; a pair of windscreen wipers, the filleting board and a Maxwell drum winch to name but a few. Plus you have a big options list if you want more such as diesel heater, electric toilet, foam injected into the pontoons, live bait tank and a fully painted hull. You have a lot of different options in the way you configure your 2500 Ultracab or Ultracab XL so you get things the way you want. I have to agree when Stabicraft say that the 2500 Ultracab XL incorporates a unique aesthetic that is unmistakably Stabicraft while housing multiple interior design innovations to suit multiple boating platforms. Could not have summed it up better myself.

EXTREME 745 GAME KING

Barry Thompson checks out the 745 Game King, one of Extreme Boats most enduring models and finds a boat that has matured with age.

ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

Coming with an unquestionable pedigree and attention to detail that is hard to beat.

HEN it comes to building aluminium trailer boats, Kiwi boat builders are amongst the best in the world, and one of the leading brands is Extreme Boats. Manufactured out of their ever-expanding operation in Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, Extreme Boats are New Zealand’s most awarded aluminium boat manufacturer with over 20 models ranging from 5.5m to 11.85m. While local sales absorb most of the annual production, the export market is continuing to evolve, and with the recent appointment of a European dealership, Extreme Boats are taking that to a whole new level. This award-winning manufacturer has received high acclaim in New Zealand, including four major awards this year at the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show. These include winning the best new model, specialist fishing boat up to 7m, specialist fishing boat up to 8m, and also winning the overall boat of the show. The concept behind the eight model Game King series is the ultimate small boat game fishing experience for those wanting to hit the deep sea

and bring home a trophy fish or two. Along with the versatile 605 Game King, right through to the monster 1185 Game King for the serious operator, the 745 Game King is designed as an all-rounder, catering for your serious fishing desires while still being a practical and a well-appointed family boat.

Our test venue off Whakatane saw a light, moderate sea state with 15 knots of breeze and a low swell. While the 745 was comfortable enough at full speed (41.5 knots), it was a pleasure to drive at 4000rpm @ 23 knots. Plus, there was a considerable difference in the fuel consumption from the single Honda 225. An important aspect to consider if you are using the boat for game fishing is the range, so top-end speeds are not as important as how far you can go at a slow cruise. In the case of the 745 Game King/Honda 225 package we recorded a range of around 300nm at 1500 rpm based on tankage of 300 litres. If you are going to drive for extended periods, then seat comfort is also essential. The 745 Game King scored well, with a fully adjustable helm seat that offers seated, bolster or full standing driving

positions, so you can get yourself set up the way you want for the sea conditions. I liked the bolster style, and when I did go back to the seated position, I found the helm, controls and footrest were all correctly placed. No matter what driving position you choose, the visibility is excellent all around and the seating comfortable. Being a hardtop, it goes without saying that you have all the weather protection you want, be it from the harsh UV or a cold and wet day. You get a natural airflow with a short sliding window either side, and you could also add an overhead hatch if you want more. The 745 Game King is based on a deep vee 21-deg hull with a 2.49m beam, with a high chine with full shoulders that provide fantastic stability. The wide flat chines taper well toward the fine-entry bow and dissipate the water flat and wide. Add to this a flooding keel and, whether at rest or full-throttle you can be confident of a very stable, soft, dry ride. Extreme pay a lot of attention to not only the style and presentation of their boats but also to the overall construction strength. The standard hull is 5mm, with a 6mm or 8mm option, with topsides all in 4mm. All structures are fully welded, and all buoyancy and fuel tanks under the sole are pressurized. Power options are mainly outboard and although the majority have been built for a single outboard (150300hp), there have been a few twin rigs as well as a single diesel sterndrive version. ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #18

188

The cabin is reasonably conventional with a twotier shelf layout either side and storage under the vee berths. You have the option of a portable head beneath the centre squab, plus an infill that turns the entire cabin into one extensive berth. Great for overnighting. Like the rest of the 745 Game King, the finish is exceptional, with not a hint of alloy anywhere. Fabric covers everything, and it presents a warm and appealing ambience. You have the option of an open hardtop or a fully enclosed wheelhouse with an aft bulkhead with central door and drop-down side windows. If you do go for the wheelhouse, the internal layout can be completely reconfigured to include a dinette that converts to another berth and a small galley module behind the helm. Stepping up into the hardtop space, there is a generous size helm to starboard with enough real estate for up to a 16 MFD. When it comes to seating, you have a lot of options, from a couple of buckets seats to back to back king/queens. Our test boat had a pair of swivelling bucket seats on alloy bases, that included storage drawers as well as storage spaces under the curved rear seats. As our boat had a Minn Kota trolling outboard, one of the rear lockers was devoted entirely to the battery bank. Again, this is all customer-driven, and you can add things like a cooker, sink unit and a fridge/freezer into the modules. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM

All adds up to making this a great weekender. The cockpit is vast and provides fishing space for at least four anglers. The wide coamings are at a perfect height for stand-up fishing, and they come with a total of six-rod holders (you can add more). An overhead rocket launcher looks after more rod storage. All fittings such as rod holders and bung bases are welded in. The cockpit sole in our boat was covered with the optional SeaDek flooring, which adds a subtle finish to the presentation of the boat, as well as being extremely hard wearing and practical. No serious fishing boat would come without a live bait tank, and in the Extreme 745 Game King, that’s built-in under the port side transom walkthrough. This can be used as an additional storage area. Alongside in the centre is a dedicated bait station, with battery storage in starboard side lockers. There is an optional swim step platform cage which is great for extending your fishing space. There is also a tee style dive ladder, perfect for divers to use without needing to first remove fins. Steps and ladders fold away neatly when not in use. External storage is provided in a large wet locker in the sole, with concealed hinges (no stubbed

toes!) which can be used for wet storage, dive gear, spare anchors, catch - or even an oversized live bait tank if needed. There are also various side trays and extra space under the transom. The 300-litre fuel tank runs down the centre line, with all areas either side taken up for buoyancy. Buyers have the assurance of knowing that all Extreme Boats hulls are built to survey standards and are New Zealand Boat Building Standard Compliance Plate Certification (CPC) certified.

Coming with an unquestionable pedigree and attention to detail that is hard to beat, the 745 Game King is an absolute winner. While the model has been part of the Extreme range for several years, it has continually undergone subtle changes that have developed the boat into what it is today. It’s a boat that will undoubtedly suit serious fisherman, and there is enough onboard to make it a great family weekender. Unquestionably a genuine allrounder.

FLETCH’S TIPS Aaron Fletcher has years of experience as a Commercial Skipper and later as a marine educator within the local community. Every issue Fletch shares his tips learned after years of getting it right and getting it wrong.

TIP #011

GLASS WORM

If you are the owner of an older fiberglass boat you will likely find it suffering from “Glass Worm”. This infestation is cause by previous owners excessively drilling holes in and around the consul fitting components and electronics, the end result is lots of unsightly holes on top of the dashboard and around cabin. I recommend you flush mount all your electronics above the dashboard consul (most units come with a flush mounting kit). This can be a bit fiddly, but the end result is worth it. Also fill all the unsightly holes with a Gel Coat based filler and lightly sand back flat.

TIP #012

FUSE PROBLEM Regularly check your fuses (annually), often electrical faults can be traced back to corrosion on the fuse terminals. These fused looked ok, however there was a layer of aluminum oxide on the terminals causing intermittent electrical faults.

TIP #013

DIY RUBBER DECKING Upgrade your deck with faux teak decking, you can pick these up for between $90 - $130 a sheet from Trademe. I used 3 x sheets to completely cover the entire deck and cabin, the end result is a fantastic deck that is hard-wearing and easy to clean. There are a number of local brands such as Sea Dek and U-Deck that come in various colours and are even available custom made with your boat name, logo or fish measurement ruler.

TIP #015

Toilet Muffler My neighbors loved me when I made my own outboard muffler from an old toilet “P” bend. You can pick one up from the hardware store for around $20, press the pipe into the exhaust on the propeller (the rubber end) and fill with water. This will reduce the engine noise by almost 50%. Note: don’t use a “Pre-used” one.

TIP #014

Rocket Launcher Wiring I had to wire up my rocket launcher with a pair of LED spot lights, anchor light and 2 x LED flood lights, this required me to pass at least 5 wires through the launcher tube. Rather than trying to push through 5 x separate wires you can use a single 5 core trailer wire. This makes is really easy to connect everything up as you have a single large cable feeding all your LED lights and it makes everything really tidy.

EXTREME

The all new Yamaha XTO Offshore outboard is one beast of an engine, designed to deliver maximum power and thrust. The result of years of collaboration with top boat designers, the XTO has been built from the ground up to provide the ultimate in power and efficiency offshore. In fact, there’s nothing ordinary about this engine: It’s our most technologically advanced ever. This 425HP, 5.6L V8 introduces an industry first fully integrated electric steering system, the highest compression ratio on the water and engineering touches like iridium spark plugs and quad thermostats. It’s purpose-built for extreme power, durability, control and reliability. The XTO is another testimony to Yamaha’s enviable reputation for innovation and building big horsepower engines in a class of their own. yamaha-motor.co.nz
