FIRST FATCAT 5000 LAUNCHED

FLYFIN LAUNCHES NEW MODELS The team at Tino Marine in Papamoa have been busy with their new range of aluminium fishing boats, with the release of four new Flyfin models in as many months and soon to be a 5th with a hardtop version of their very popular 1900 Hardtop.

The first all aluminium FatCat 5000 is in the water and currently undergoing sea trials in Napier. One of the significant differences in the FatCat 5000 will be fabricated from aluminium rather than rotomoulded in polyethylene, as the FatCat 4000 is. Managing Director Blair McLay explains, “Rotomoulded polymers like polyethylene have many advantages in small boats, but there are some limitations as boat sizes increase. Essentially the loads increase dramatically with length, and although very strong, Polyethene is not as stiff as aluminium or fibreglass. In small boats, this is fine because polyethylene is a third of the weight of something like aluminium, so you can add thickness to give adequate stiffness without a weight penalty. The first FatCat 5000 is powered by a 140hp Suzuki. www.lightningmarine.co.nz

“Drawing on experience from our complex and no expense spared custom boats and filtering it down to make something that fits the New Zealand fisherman,“ said Nicholas Fenton - Tino Marine design director. Tino Marine will be moving to their purpose-built facility in the last quarter of 2021, this will be a great leap forward for the future as it will significantly increase their capacity. Flyfin boats have new dealer representation with Auckland Marine Centre in Auckland and Boat City in Paraparaumu. www.tinomarine.co.nz

NEW WALKAROUND FROM MARCO Marco Boats will be displaying their new 750 Evolution, based on Marco’s popular 750 Souwester range but evolved with help from owner and well know fisherman Luke Davis. This is a more custom fishing orientated vessel for both game fishing and top water fishing while still offering stayaway comfort and practicality. This 750 Evolution will also be used with Nathan and Milan to bring a different type of fishing to their Lateral line YouTube channel. It features a new game fishing orientated transom design and Marco’s new Stealthtech Outrigger bases and rod storage system. With a full complement of Humminbird electronics, 300HP Suzuki Outboard, full U-Dek flooring package and Plenty of other neat features it is well worth a look on stand 525. www.marcoboats.co.nz ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

TIME TO EXPLORE WITH AMP BOATS Invercargill based AMP Boats recently released their first 6.8m hardtop. This is a custom build with their WM (WorkMan) Series. The new boat features a pilot house, with forward facing screen design, to increase cabin space and give great visibility, with the driving position moved further forward. The first HT with the WM windscreen setup has a custom front deck and low access door which provides a a practical, user friendly layout. The boat was built to the customers spec, both in the layout and design. One of the big custom work is a self-draining deck on the bow with small access door. This was fully custom built with customer input based around Alaskan style walk throughs. A relatively new player in the alloy pontoon boat market, AMP Boats can custom quote this type of build based off couple of model lengths, 4.5m and 6.8m+, and work through specs and features that will suit you. Their range includes open runabouts, console cuddy cabin and jetboats. www.ampboats.co.nz

IMPOSING MACHINA 701 HEAT WAVE FROM PUREKRAFT The Purekraft 800HT ‘Heat Wave’ was a bit of a special build for HMD. Design and functionality is at the forefront of what Purekraft do, so when they were approached to build an 8m hard top that incorporated wheelchair accessibility, they happily took up the challenge. Twin side doors allow for easy boarding/disembarkment on either side of the vessel, and the raised wheelchair ramp plus platform at the helm allows full visibility and can be hidden away when not in use. The 800HT is also available without these additional features, for those of you who want a highly capable offshore boat for both day trips and overnight adventures.

Imposing - this is often the word of choice when people see the Machina 701. Machina Supply Co is making their first appearance at the Hutchwilco NZ boat show this year and officially releasing the Machina 701. The Machina 701 is whatever you want it to be - whether it be a bit of comfort for a weekend away or a boy’s trip chasing some big game. A high bow, strong lines are features of this Machina boat. Based in Hawkes Bay, the company specialise in tailor-made aluminium pontoon trailer boats. Find us and the Machina 701 at Stand EX26 (across from the Carlton Bar). www.machinasupply.com

COMBINING AN ALUMINIUM HULL, GRP SUPERSTRUCTURE AND TECTRAX AMPHIBIOUS SYSTEM, FENTON MARINE’S NEW 770 AMPH IS AN IMPRESSIVE PERFORMER BOTH ON AND OFF THE WATER.

it to “squat” on the beach, but it also features a stabilising gyro and a bimini-style hardtop that can be lowered electrically to below the level of the windscreen to fit in a 2.1m garage.

POWERFUL PERFORMER

Fenton Marine’s first foray into the fast-growing amphibious boat market is an impressive debut.

40 knots with Mercury 300hp Verado.

Few boats attract as much attention at the ramp as did the new Fenton Marine 770 AMPH. I suspect that could be because it doesn’t look like a conventional amphibious boat. Instead, it seems more like a very classy, stylish cruiser that just happens to sit on three wheels rather than a trailer. Designer and builder Nick Fenton say both he and the vessel’s owner were adamant that the 770 AMPH had to work as well as a “proper” boat as it did as an amphibious one. The 770 AMPH is Nick’s first amphibious design (he also produces the Tino range of RIBs and the Flyfin range of alloy boats), and he says he spent a lot of time listening to its owner and understanding what he wanted. “I then designed the 770 from the keel up, spent more time with the owner and kept modifying it until we were both satisfied. We even built a full-size mockup before finalising the design.” The result is a truly amazing vessel and surely one of the most innovative on the market. Not only does it feature an amphibious system that allows

To ensure the boat performs as much as possible like a typical alloy vessel, the Tectrax system’s front wheel lives in its pod well above the waterline while the rear wheels tuck away under the transom and are shielded by the hull. The result is a boat that performs not just like a regular boat but more like a performance craft. With a 300hp Mercury V8 on the back, it leaps onto the plane, gets swiftly to its cruising revs, handles like a dream and, despite displacing three tonnes, effortlessly hits a top speed of 39.2 knots. Acceleration through the range is immediate, and when turning, even quite tightly, there is no hint that three large wheels are hanging off the ends. As the accompanying figures show, there are some sweet spots in the speed/fuel burn range, with 4500rpm giving around 35% more speed over 4000rpm for just an extra litre per hour. It’s almost as impressive at 5000rpm where the extra 500 revs give nearly 43% more speed for just 27% more fuel used. The 770 is also fitted with a Quick gyro stabiliser. Requiring its own bank of batteries, it does take a little while to power up, but it is an impressive bit of kit. We drive fast in tight circles with a dead flat harbour to create some good-sized waves before dropping off the plane and waiting for them to hit. It is an eerie feeling when they do. One braces and waits for the rocking to start and then feels rather foolish. Despite the waves approaching from the beam, the side to side movement is barely

discernable. I imagine for those who suffer from mal de mer, it will seem a godsend.

ON THE BEACH

Climbing out of the water and onto the beach, the 770 AMPH proves even more of a drawcard than it did on the ramp. It also allows Nick to show off another of the Tectrax’s features: the camera mounted above the front wheel. Mounted high in the front wheel pod, the camera, its feed displayed on the Raymarine MFD 12in screen, captures both the wheel and its position and the seabed below. This enables the operator to ensure that the wheel is fully engaged and that no nasty surprises are waiting below the water. Deploying the wheels, switching between their motive power and that of the outboard and raising the latter to safely is an operation requiring good timing and a fair degree of concentration. Nick, who has now done it multiple times, says it gets easier with practice. Once on the beach, the Tectrax system also can go down on its wheels so that the hull is sitting snugly on the sand. This makes it easier for those on board to get on and off the boat more easily without using the stern ladder.

to look like it is doing 40 knots, even when sitting on its trailer. Swap trailer for wheels, and you have a pretty good description of the 770 AMPH. Better still, it matches that sleek, swept-back look with an incredibly high standard of finish. Protecting the striking Bryon Blue metallic hull, topsides and transom are an impressive eight coats of clear. The superstructure, hardtop, and those portions of the interior not fitted with either solid teak or Flexi-teak have been painted in Awlcraft Mercury Cold Fusion to match the outboard.

There is little doubt that the 770’s owner is a keen fisher.

Seating layouts are owner’s choice. Wide deep sided decks are coated with Flexikteak. A Maxwell Tasman drum winch is neatly stowed below deck.

One of the most eye-catching sections of the 770 is the large aft platform. Here, the intrusion of space to accommodate the aft wheel assemblies has been turned into a positive, the wheel arches on each side becoming attractive cascading semi-circles that follow the Portofino stern curve. With protective pushpits and a 2.75m beam, the platform still offers plenty of space from which to fish, and these arches provide a comfortable place to perch when the action is slow.

There is little doubt that the 770’s owner is a keen fisher. There is a bait tank in the port transom (its height making it far easier to access than those installed under transom steps). The Fenton custom bait board includes reversible timber inserts and a sink underneath, draining cleanly out under the platform. The bait board also features a handy Raymarine Axiom 9” MFD, a repeater for its larger sibling in the dash.

SERIOUS BATTERY POWER

With both an amphibious system and a gyro stabiliser on board, the 770 needs a relatively sophisticated electrical management system. The engineering and batteries required to power it all takes up a reasonable amount of space. With so much extra weight on the boat, its distribution is critical, and Nick has chosen to spread it between a large transom locker and a centrally positioned one under the cockpit. In the former life, the dual boat batteries, Victron AC/DC and DC/DC chargers, the Blue Seas remote battery system and the Tectrax control boxes. Housed beneath the cockpit are the lithium batteries and the rear wheel up/down controls for the Tectrax system, along with the 500a/hr bank of four AGM batteries required to run the gyro. Other electronics onboard include Zipwake auto trim tabs, a CZone digital switching system linked to the Axiom MFD, a Maxwell Tasman drum winch and the Fusion stereo system.

A Quick gyro helps keep the boat extremely stable. The custom dash easily incorporates both the Tectrax and Mercury controls.

SEATING OPTIONS

Those on board have plenty of options when its time to relax. There are the twin custom-made King/ Queen seats with composite back supports for the former and space to accommodate chiller boxers under the latter. There are fold down side seats in the cockpit (like the transom hatches, all CNC manufactured by Fenton Marine) and loads of space in the cabin, which also houses a TMC head and a privacy curtain. Although it’s not apparent at first glance, the 770 is also a complete, well-protected walkaround. Thanks to its wide timber steps, anodised scuppers to stop water running back into the cockpit and rod and drink holders, it is ideal for those wanting to soft bait or wanting unimpeded movement when fighting large pelagics. Any, finally, if there wasn’t enough innovation on this vessel already, Nick has designed a carbon fibre

and GRP hardtop that can be electrically lowered below the level of the windscreen so the 770 can live underneath its owner’s pole house.

SUMMARY

Fenton Marine’s first foray into the fast-growing amphibious boat market is an impressive debut. No follow-the-leader copycat, this is an innovative, clever design, stylishly executed. Although its owner lives just a short distance from the nearest boat ramp, the 770 AMPH’s system allows him 25 minutes of on-land on a hard surface. That is more than enough to launch his boat, visit (i.e. run up onto) a few nearby beaches and return home. Add in the gyro stabiliser, the hydraulic hardtop, the sleek looks and stunning finish — and the powerful performance — and this is a boat that will attract attention. A lot of attention.

TOWING VEHICLE REVIEW

ISUZU D-MAX X-TERRAIN

MOVIN’ ON UP…

THE PREVIOUS ISUZU D-MAX MODEL HAD BEEN AROUND FOR EIGHT YEARS, WHICH IN THESE TIMES, MADE IT DUE FOR REPLACEMENT. ALONG WITH EDITOR, BARRY THOMPSON WE HAD RUN TWO OF THE LS MODELS FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS AND ENJOYED WHAT THEY HAD TO OFFER, SO THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE POWERBOAT MAGAZINE TEAM TO STEP UP TO THE NEW 2021 MODEL MADE GREAT SENSE. ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

TO BEST IN CLASS… TEXT BY DOUG DUKESON

For 2021, there is a choice of the LX, LS-M and LS and now a totally new variant also joins the new-generation of D-Max, higher spec variant, the X-Terrain. It was the X-Terrain we chose as our choice of vehicle. We received these early January and have had a few months to ‘discover and learn’ the new model. And man, have they made some changes.

market today. These include autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane assist, lane departure warning, a blind spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the addition of a side centre airbag. Many of these features enabled by the new dual-camera sensor system, mounted high on the windscreen. Adaptive cruise control through the binocular frontal camera system, which works right down to standstill. Coupled with the lane-keep assist which includes steering assist which automatically centres the vehicle, makes motorway and country driving a pleasure. Although this did take a bit of getting used to, once dialled in, I found this a real highway asset.

CLEAN SHEET The new D-Max is a clean-sheet design from the groundup, with just few carryover bits from the previous model, namely the powertrain. This is the same 3.0-litre turbodiesel, although noticeably much quieter with an increased 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque. Transmission is either a sixspeed automatic, which was relatively new on the previous model or a six speed manual, both carryovers from last generation - with a little tickle up. The addition of ‘driver aids’ galore has awarded the D-Max a five star ANCAP rating, making it the safest ute on the WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

HIDDEN FEATURES Over the two months we have had the vehicles, almost every time I climbed aboard, I discovered another feature, and being a Kiwi bloke – regretfully in this instance, I should

153

ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

have refered to the manual much sooner than when I did. Over this time – I managed to get off road a couple of times and was impressed with all the carried over and new off roading functions the D-Max had to offer. Off-roading electronics such as hill descent control, a switchable differential lock and a more refined four-wheel drive system, makes the D-Max great for those getting out into the back country. Including the passing on the very functional, switchable four-wheel drive system on the fly technology, from the previous model. The electronic speed sensitive steering rather than the previous hydraulic system is an absolute pleasure, making city driving and low speed parking easy, especially when coupled with front and rear parking sensors on our X-Terrain. Upgraded technology and quality of interior components have also come a long way from the previous model. An updated infotainment system within the nine-inch touchscreen includes sat-nav and smart phone wireless mirroring of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This took a little learning – but now dialled in, I would not want be without it. At 144ppi resolution the screen is crisp and sharp.

At the ramp, dragging a good size boat from the Gulf Harbour boat ramp was easy without any slippage, even in just 2WD. The D-Max is still rated to a braked towing weight of 3.5 ton – with a tray load of 1 ton. ISUZU have certainly gone the extra mile with the new 2021 model and the X-Terrain is up another level again. Including the mentioned active safety technology, driver comforts include the eight-way powered driver seat with lumber support, and a smart proximity key with remote engine start. This model comes with quality leather interior trim, front and rear parking sensors, aggressive looking wheel arch extensions and gun-metal exterior highlights. Not to forget the roller tonneau cover and boot tray liner, which all come standard on the X-Terrain. For passengers in the rear – an air-conditioning vent has been added along with a USB port, these being just a few of the many many new enhancements introduced. To date, Barry and I have been thoroughly impressed with Isuzu’s new generation ute. The new D-Max, is a must consider, especially taking onto account the added safety features and premium appointments. ISUZU have pushed the boundaries and delivered a vehicle that I believe matches and in many cases exceeds the other big boys in the ute game. In NZ - all D-Max’s are covered by an unlimited kilometre / 3 year warranty. Price range: $49,990 for the LX 2WD, through to $75,490 for our top-spec X-Terrain model. Powertrains: 3.0-litre turbodiesel inline inline-four with 140kW/450Nm, 8.0L/100km, six-speed automatic or six-speed manual, in 2WD and 4WD variations. www.isuzuutes.co.nz

GREAT TOWING CAPACITY I can honestly say, in the 2,500kms already travelled, ISUZU’s X-Terrain, has been an absolute pleasure to drive, both on road and off road. For thousands of these kilometres I have towed a 2,000kg caravan about the North Island – effortlessly. When not towing, we seem to be averaging 9.2 litres per 100km, and this may well loosen up to the ISUZU suggested 8.9 litres per 100km after our first 3,000km service. ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

How dumb was I coming home with 30 snapper [ 60 fillets], thumping my chest like neanderthal man, then giving it all away thinking I was doing a good thing? With quotas in effect one would think the snapper bio mass would in time increase, yet there have been a number of factors when all combined, has slowed or stalled the regeneration of stocks. Pollution being a major contributor in my opinion. Back in the day when Half Moon Bay Marina was built, initially the dredging spoil was dumped out from Browns Island, in belief the currents would disperse it. Wrong! Before long, there was an uproar from the public as the silt build up discolouration of the water and it was covering not only the bottom, but the kelp beds in the area. Silt covering both the bottom and kelp chokes the shellfish etc as well as the gills of the fish that feed on them, so they moved out of the affected area.

THE PAST

P

ERSONALLY, I have fished and worked on the Hauraki Gulf for over sixty years witnessing many changes take place. Fishing before there were bag limits for both recreational and commercial there was slaughter on the water and I was as “guilty as anyone”. Greed is part of human nature and the fishing industry back in the day saw a lot of cheating by way of high grading and non-reported landing of snapper. Facts are facts but even with limited compliance officers still went on for a number of years. Even today we read of companies and individuals being brought before the courts. I wonder what percentage of commercial infringements there are against recreational infringements. First, I saw the introduction of the commercial quota system and a recreational daily limit of thirty snapper per angler per day come in force. Back then, we had no problems catching 30 fish often leaving the ramp at 6am back by 10am and ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

We all enjoy a good hook up but we should understand the ramifications of taking too many snapper.

The phenomenal growth rate in the greater Auckland area, has seen the population go from 700,000 30 years ago to around 1.5 million. This increase in populations has increased fishing pressure like we have never seen before, and only now are the effects being understood and addressed. Infill housing massively increases run off in the harbours and estuaries taking massive amounts of oil, rubber, garden sprays, insecticides and the likes. I recall at dead low tide, beaches like St Heliers and Mission Bay being clean clear sand. Now there is a covering of green brown algae covering the shell fish breeding grounds. This is only what I can see. I can only assume the same results are extending further out into the harbours and gulf. Less food less fish. Mother nature will always toss a curve ball or two such as happened around twelve years ago, with the spawning taking place in early November. A cold snap hit the coast plunging water temperature’s till early April. As post spawning snapper normally move into the gulf and estuaries to put on condition before winter, very few came in and feed on the now reduced supply of shellfish worms etc. The same event took place but to a lesser degree for the following two years resulting in a dramatic drop in the number of snapper coming up into the shallow warm waters of the inner gulf to feed as they traditionally did. Only now all these years latter am I starting to slowly see the snapper start to improve but still nowhere near what I would call normal.

Now that’s what it’s all about.

Six nice pannies, one short of the limit but enough.

THE PRESENT

I

AM STAGGERED at the advances in onboard electronics to the point my Furuno TZ touch chart plotter will actually and accurately tell me the size of the fish on the screen. My first sounder was back in the day when we only used charts and paper chart plotters. Today with the help of GPS anyone can buy a boat with the Multi Function Display (MFD) and head

out and catch fish. Local knowledge isn’t even that necessary as everything you need to know is on Youtube. This all comes at an unseen cost to us all, with huge numbers of undersize fish being caught every week. This happens particularly in deeper water over the spawning season, due to miss handled. (See Fishing Column Page 46 this issue).

(Above) The pressure is on to stop blatant over fishing such as this recent seizure in Auckland. (Left) The huge advantage of Furuno's Accu fish feature is it shows the "actual size" of the fish that go directly through the centre of the transducer beam this reduces the chances of catching small fish. THE FUTURE

N

say October 1 to first of March. If both the recreational and commercial sector halved the catch rate over those months, theoretically 50% more fish get a chance to breed. Within five to eight years [the time it takes for the average snapper to mature and spawn] the bio mass could increase by 50%. Farmers don’t send their stock to the freezing works when they are pregnant so why do we continue to be blind and not see what to me is blatantly the simplest thing we can all do to start looking after the future fishery. Don’t get me wrong I am not a sandal wearing tree hugger and yes” I” have been guilty in the past years of being selfish wasteful and downright dumb. Only now with time spent on the water I have vast historical experience to reflect on and can see what we all need to do to protect and more importantly enhance the fishery for future generations to be able to enjoy.

OW I WILL COME INTO A FAIR BIT OF FLAK. I am not against soft baiting micro jigs etc and at times I use them, but I increase the size of the hooks and only use one hook. Unless skilfully done, which is not the case with the average angler, small multiple hooks dramatically increases the difficulty of safe handling to remove a hook from a struggling fish without harming it. Warning Swish more incoming flack! When will we ever learn from the past? Fishing, apart from game fishing where a high percentage of sport fish caught are tagged and released “releasing snapper is very different”. Firstly, we should only go snapper fishing for food, taking what you need be it 2-3 fish or your limit. To continue to keep catching snapper for fun only to have them bounce around on the bottom of the boat till they lay still enough to be measured and released in my mind not only dramatically decreases its chances of survival but is downright cruel. Just as I was all those years ago thumping my chest catching limit bags of thirty fish a day, now I hear people proudly say they released thirty good size fish, This is high grading something we constantly blame the commercial sector of doing. Only if in doubt will I measure kingfish. I hold a wet towel over the eyes which settles it down so it doesn’t thrash about when laid on the deck. The future is in your hands. Warning Swish even more incoming flack. Education is better than legislation, increase legislation would take vast amounts of money to effectively police which would only result in a fishing licence. With the population doubling every few years so will the pressure on the fishery. I have for many years said the only way to increase the bio mass is to reduce [not stop fishing] over the spawning months

We should limit our fishing during breeding season, says the author.

One kingfish is enough.

Fishing the Western side of Great Barrier Island With late autumn and early winter often producing several days of continuous fine calm weather around Great Barrier Island, you would be hardpressed to find a better place to go fishing, says Paul Walker. IMAGES BY PHIL GILBERT

W

ith all the troubles this Covid virus has dumped on us, it might be nice to grab the boat and get away for a couple of days and make the most of one of these calm spells. But where to go? Well, Great Barrier Island may tick all the boxes. This vast island is aptly named the Great Barrier, for it stands the sentinel and guardian of the Hauraki Gulf. Its eastern coast absorbs all that the Pacific can throw at it and leaves the gulf sheltered from the continuous oceanic swells. Without this barrier island, the Hauraki Gulf would not be the boating playground it is today. Situated about 100 km/h kilometres from Auckland Harbour, it may seem just too far and remote for most people to contemplate making the journey, but believe me, it’s well worth the effort. There are regular ferries from Auckland, including a vehicle ferry and a daily plane service from the North Shore airfield at Dairy Flat. There is suitable accommodation scattered throughout this vast island that has become popular with tourists, adventure seekers, surfers, trampers, rock fishers, or people just wanting a weekend away from it all.

beaches, scattered groups of rocks and small islands, plus all the nooks and crannies this fantastic island has to offer. As far as boats go, I wouldn’t be undertaking this journey in anything less than a well maintained 6m cabin boat. I must stress the need to check your weather once, twice, then three times before leaving. A good starting point is the Omaha boat ramp. It is an excellent all-weather ramp, and departing from there will cut the boating mileage down to a minimum. The bonus is you have more fuel to use. As for fuel, take heaps a fuel purchased on the island is expensive. The best advice is to take plenty of food, drink, ice, bait, fuel, and fishing tackle, for you may end up staying longer than you intended.

WESTERN SIDE There are four main safe anchorages up the western side of the island; Tryphena, Whangaparapara, Fitzroy, and Nagle Cove in Port Abercrombie. These harbours will give access to different areas of very fishable coastline. There are also lesser anchorages like Blind Bay, Bowling Alley Bay, and Katherine Bay’s many coves. One of my favourite places to lock in for the night is Oneura Bay, opposite the Man of War passage, leading into Port Fitzroy. These safe havens will give you a vast amount of great fishable coast to work on, and that’s just the western side. There is a whole different coast on the eastern side, but I will keep that for another day and another article.

FISHING UTOPIA For me, I believe the best way to see and explore this island is by boat. The massive coastline the Great Barrier provides is an endless fishing utopia. Taking a boat allows you to not only fish but explore all the harbours, bays,

southeastern corner. Fish here with the incoming tide for kingies and big Snapper. Just watch the current here as on big tides, it can stand up around this area. Retrace your steps and head back up the West Coast past Whangaparapara Harbour, where you will come upon the Junction islands and Broken islands. Between Tryphena and these islands, there are some possibilities in close. Just pick a likely spot and fish it. It’s the Junction islands that hold special meaning for me, as it was here I caught my biggest Snapper so far at 22 pounds. That was over twenty years ago, but the memory is still as fresh as yesterday. If conditions allow you to overnight, Bowling Alley Bay is ideal. You will be sleeping amongst some fabulous fishing grounds, great for an early morning start.

Ok, so let’s talk about the main reason you are out there, fishing. You can have a good look at this coast on google maps or check out marine charts 522 and 5225. These charts will give a great insight into what is available to you. In the many times, I have fished out there, I am sure we only scratched the surface, but I can give you a few spots and tell a few stories. I would tend to fish in close and leave the deep water alone in late autumn and winter. So let’s start at Tryphena. Turning left and heading east as you leave the harbour towards Cape Barrier, you see two bricks on the chart. Anchor up current of this reef and stray line back into it with plenty of burley. You will get a feed and maybe a couple of good ones. East of this spot is a small island with a drop off on the

BIG SNAPPER OPPORTUNITIES Continuing north-west through the Broken Islands’ inner passage, there are plenty of scattered rocks and small islands to cast a bait or soft bait into. We also like to drift fish through here in 35 to 40 m right up to Nelson Island, but this deeper water may not fish as well in winter. All of the rocks in this general area offer big snapper opportunities, as does the reef country of Motuhaku Island around from Wellington Head. Heading north now to Katherine Bay, both points on either side are good for kingfish on an incoming tide. The drop off just out from Moturoa Point is a good place for an evening snapper fish, with the bird rocks just outside you. On the other side of the bay, you have Kirikiriroa Point and its reef. Or maybe drift through the middle of the bay, where I have had some great success. Should you decide to overnight in here, watch for winds from the west through to the north. This is a lovely bay but is unfortunately wide open to these winds. Moving north up the coast now, you will come to the fabled Miners Head and its associated reef. It’s the steamer Wairarapa’s resting place after she smashed into the cliffs in 1894 with the loss of 135 lives. The reef is an excellent place to jig, and anything can be on the menu; Kingies, Snapper, Trevally, John Dory. In late autumn or winter, this reef may be a bit deep, but what the hell. If you’ve come this far, why not give it a shot. Moving from Miners Head up the coast, you come to The Needles at the other end of Great Barrier Island’s western side. This group of pinnacles rising sheer out of the water, and with its strong currents swirling through these rocks, it’s a

legendary place for Kingfish and Snapper. Around the corner from The Needles is a stunning, very different coast, but as I said, we will leave that story for another day. One place I haven’t covered yet are the harbours themselves. Port Abercrombie and Port Fitzroy are huge, and straylining or soft baiting around the perimeter of these large harbours would be well worth trying. Tryphena and its neighbour, Blind Bay, although a bit smaller, are worth trying, as is Whangaparapara Harbour. So as you can see, whatever piece of this western coastline you choose to fish and explore, the scope is endless. You can mix it up with fishing the coastline or the calmer, more sheltered harbours’ waters. The choice is yours, depending on how you feel when you get out there. If you haven’t been to Great Barrier Island before, but you feel this adventure might be for you, now is the time to get planning. Spend some time pouring over those two charts, 522 and 5225 and don’t cut any corners on gear, fuel and provisions. Once you have that first trip under your belt, you will be planning another in short order.

MIDWEST 5.8

WEST COAST WEAPON

A

ndre Lewer, owner of Whanganui Boating Centre, the manufacturers of the MIDWEST 5.8, describes the boat as one that has been designed and built to be suitable for the rugged aspects of West Coast boating. Anyone who has boated along the coastline off Taranaki knows that it can be a mean stretch of water, and then there is also the Whanganui Bar to consider. This was my first time boating out of Whanganui, and I expected to see a bar with big swells and the sort of sea that makes

ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

a 5.8m boat seem very small. Well, my fears were quickly dispelled when we arrived at the river mouth and a flat, calm bar with no discernable swell at all. The sea state offshore was much the same, so there was little to trouble the MIDWEST 5.8. Andre Lewer says the concept of the MIDWEST 5.8 was for a safe, well-built and robust boat that could handle just about any seas. “We go 25nm up the coast to our favourite fishing and diving spots, and sometimes the trip home can be pretty gnarly, so I

wanted a boat I knew would get us home in reasonable comfort and not have to worry about the sea conditions,” says Andre. With heavy weather boating in mind, the MIDWEST 5.8 is constructed using 5mm plate on the bottom, with 4mm/3mm for the topsides and cabin. All the underfloor superstructure is 5mm and is fully welded with no stitching. This adds rigidity to the boat that you can certainly feel when you drive it. Even the treadplate floor is 5mm, adding even more strength and a solid feel to the structure. The pipe rails are all upsized from the usual 25mm to 32mm throughout the boat and are nice to hold. WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

“It’s a bit of a trade-off being a little heavier than other similar-sized boats as you sacrifice top-end speed and some performance, but in a boat like this that is designed for offshore fishing and diving, I feel the quality of the ride is more important than how fast the boat goes”, says Andre. One of the interesting aspects of the 18 deg hull is an extrawide downturned chine that runs ¾ the length of the hull. At 90mm x 60mm, it is designed to keep the pontoons off the water when running, makes trimming the boat a lot easier and helps eliminate any pounding from the pontoons slapping the water.

A Suzuki SMD9 dominates the dash. A V-berth with squabs is an option for the cuddy. Twin transom lockers are standard. With 2.70m height under the hardtop, it’s tall enough for most of us.

BASIC LAYOUT

The layout is very traditional for a hardtop pontoon boat of this size. The emphasis is on space for fishing and diving, so the cockpit is minimalistic with maximum use of the 1.87m internal beam. Seating options are available, so you can spec out the boat to suit your requirements. Boat #1 had a pair of swivelling BLA bucket seats forward and blank cuddy cabin space. This left a sizeable workable fishing cockpit that ticks all the boxes, including deep toe kicks and wide flat coamings that are a generous 800mm from the cockpit sole.

ALLOY BOAT 2021 ISSUE #22

“I consider that for our boating out of Whanganui, the twin pedestal seating layout is the best, but we are happy to do anything a customer wants”, said Andre. Storage space is available inside trays that extend all the way forward into the cuddy and a wet floor locker. The 120-litre fuel tank is centre aft and can be enlarged, although at the expense of some underfloor locker space. All other space under the cockpit sole is dedicated to buoyancy. Twin transom lockers are standard, with the batteries to port and some extra storage to starboard. While the boat was sans a live bait or bait station, all that can be added on request. There is a wide walk-through to the boarding platform, which includes an alloy drop down ladder. The flat dash is big enough for large MFDs, which in our case, was the latest Suzuki SMD9 display. The Suzuki Multi-Function Display (based on Furuno software) gives you access to all your Suzuki engine information, plus weather, chart plotting, multi-beam sonar and radar (if fitted). Control is at the touch of a finger with the glass top design. Alongside was a Uniden VHF and plenty of space for more controls and instruments and overhead a Fusion MSRA55.

WIDE POWER CHOICE

The MIDWEST 5.8 has a power range of outboards from 140hp to 200hp, with boat #1 powered by a Suzuki 150 SS. The top speed was 38 knots, and in the light sea conditions, the boat ran without any vices. In high speed turns, the wide chines attribute to keeping the boat flat, and it bites hard with no side slipping. It was also very exacting during the turns at mid-range. On the day, I felt we could have cruised up to Andre’s favourite fishing/diving spot at 4500 pm, using 31 lph @ 31mph. If you are into

trolling lures, then at 8 knots, you will be burning about 8 lph. The steering position is comfortable, and with 2.70m height under the hardtop, it’s tall enough for most of us. Safety glass screens mean you can add wipers, and sliding side windows are also an option. Currently, the MIDWEST 5.8 is the single model in the range and only available in hardtop. There are plans for more models to be added to the range, with a smaller 4.2m open version due soon.

NEW IMPROVED MODELS FROM TORQEEDO Torqeedo has announced several new products and developments for electric mobility on the water.

T

he popular Cruise series of electric drive systems from 5 to 20hp -equivalents is seeing advances from previous models. For 2021, the Cruise 10.0 R outboard and the Cruise 10.0 FP have received a technical update, shipping with Torqeedo’s advanced communications protocol called TorqLink. The new protocol was initially developed for Deep Blue and is now available for Cruise 10.0 motors, Power 48-5000 lithium batteries and premium Torqeedo throttles. TorqLink is a new interface between the components that makes it very easy to set up even a relatively complex electric or hybrid drive system. They all work on the same system, provide information on the same display, and work seamlessly together. Continuing the success of the directdrive Travel 1103, Torqeedo also announced a new addition to the Travel family. The Travel 603, a two horsepower-equivalent electric outboard

is a lightweight, easy-to-use, emissionfree motor suitable for dinghies and daysailers up to 1 tonne. The Minn Kota electric trolling motor

To hold the Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize in position over a deep water reef or ensure it drifts in a controlled matter, it comes with a 87in Minn Kota electric trolling motor. Specially designed for bigger boats, it has been factory-installed on the bow, complete with quick release bracket and socket and can be deployed and completely remote controlled from the helm station. Ideal to use in deeper waters where it may be too arduous or even impossible to anchor, the Minn Kota will be ideal for a controlled drift over a reef edge or drop-off, to hold over a school of fish or a particularly good fishing or diving spot or to move in near-silence through shallower water.

L&B’s lithium power solution

To provide reliable power for the Minn Kota without adding excess weight to the bow, Surtees has installed a special Lusty & Blundell lithium power solution. Including a Sterling Power AMPS lithium battery, which weighs just 13kg instead of a conventional battery’s 35kg, a DC-to-DC lithium charger that enables the trolling motor battery to be charged while the vessel is underway, a battery-to battery charger for use with a normal shore-based AC charger and other specialised components, the system ensures the battery is always fully charged and ready to go. Lusty and Blundell have also supplied Ultraflex hydraulic steering for fingertip control in all conditions, three Exalto Pantagraph wipers to ensure clear vision regardless of the weather, a Jabsco washdown pump to keep the boat clean, a 3700gph Rule bilge pump and an Oceansignal EPIRB.

Stunning Brave wrap

Setting the Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize boat apart from the rest is a stunning wrap from Brave Design. Featuring spectacular eye-catching graphics of marlin, tuna and koru, in a perfectly-blended montage of paua-like turquoise and grey, the wrap is the ultimate fishing touch for this very special prize boat.

SeaDek panels

To ensure the Grand Prize is always looking its very best — and is as comfortable as possible to use — SeaDek protective panels have been installed on the cockpit floor, on the side decks and out on the boarding platform. Its dark grey colour not only looks extremely attractive, it also provides a firm, non-slip surface on which to stand or sit and, for anyone who has spent all day fishing on a bare alloy or chequerplate floor, it will provide a far more comfortable surface on which to stand.
