I
F you have a look at the Alloy Boat listing in the back of this magazine, you will find a listing of over 500 alloy boats from 60 manufacturers. Apart from a couple, they are all Kiwi built, and they range in size from around 3m through to 12m and in every format from open tiller steer to sophisticated hardtops. If you are in the market for a new boat, then there is a mind-blowing number of options. Compare this to the Kiwi GRP boat builders of which there is only a handful, and while occasionally we see a new player enter the market (such as FatCat Boats) it is a rare event. When it comes to entirely new models and not just revamps of an existing boat, that’s also a very rare happening. I can count on one hand the number of brand new models that have been released by New Zealand GRP builders in the past three years! Not so when it comes to aluminium, as every boat show I attend I seem to come across not only plenty of new models from existing manufacturers but also new builders. The Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show is indeed testimony to that with a plethora of new models and several new brands. But then that’s what’s so good about building in alloy, it’s versatile and easily changed. Where you can move a bulkhead, add a hardtop, increase the beam or completely alter the transom arrangements in an alloy boat, it’s not that easy or cost-effective when it comes to GRP. Building from a mould restricts any changes to being more than just cosmetic or minor, whereas building in alloy it’s merely a matter of cutting the plate or welding the bulkhead in a different position from the last boat. Well, that may be a bit simplistic, but you get the idea. I love the fact that Kiwi builders are prepared to give it a go and despite massive competition are still keen to produce something new to the market. At the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, we see the return of Circa Marine from Whangarei, a well-established brand that dropped off the trailer boat radar to concentrate on big cruisers and passagemakers. There are new boats from Sealegs, Marco, Image, Makaira, BlackDog Cat, Kiwi Boating, Stabicraft and more. I am sure that when I get to the show and have my usual pre-opening walkaround, I will find even more. NB: We have got a bit behind in updating our Alloy Boat Listing, but this will be updated for the next issue of Alloy Boat #18.

VERSATILE DINGHY FROM DNA
N
ELSON-BASED DNA Alloy Boats have been building up a reputation over recent years for their innovative range of alloy boats and none more so than their smaller open tiller steer range.
The 420 HSD is a model that is designed to go anywhere and can be finished in camo for hunting or bright, vibrant colours to make a statement. The design features tapering pontoons for that sleek appearance and non-pounding ride. High sides give excellent protection from spray and provide ample storage around the boat for all types of gear meaning a clutter-free deck and more room to fish! It’s a boat that can be easily handled by one person and is light enough to be beach launched. Towing weight is around 415kg. At 4.2m with a beam of 1.61m and dry weight of 170kgs, the 420 HSD doesn’t need a lot of horsepower, with a 25-30hp more than enough. However, if you are going to use the boat to take out a few divers with all their gear, the 420 HSD will certainly easily handle a bit more power. Drop a 40hp on the transom and DNA increase the bottom hull thickness from 3mm to 4mm for extra strength. The layout can be customised to suit your needs, with an options list that includes tube matting, RailBlaza attachments, 72l Iceytek bin and base, vinyl wrap topsides, rear boarding platform and tote tank shelf. www.dnaboats.co.nz ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17

KING TIDE SALT FLY GUIDE BOAT
A
FTER several years of planning, designing and building, Lucas Allen is now driving his dream guide boat for his Tauranga based company King Tide Salt Fly. His FC535 centre console has been custom-made to be the perfect tool to take his clients saltwater fly fishing off Tauranga in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty. Lucas’ business - King Tide Salt Fly - specialises in chasing kingfish, snapper, kahawai, trevally, tuna and more, with hand-tied salt flies. A huge casting deck is the boat’s ‘showpiece’, but Lucas’ input is everywhere from the Minn Kota electric trolling motor, a Talon electric spike anchor, and tidy transom, to the fly-line friendly fold down cleats and a range of Hummingbird fish-finding technology. The boat is designed to be super userfriendly. Power is a Mercury 115hp FourStroke Command Thrust.
ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17
“The boat has 170 kilos of batteries in it, so it’s not light - about 900 kgs for a 5.35 metre tinny - so it’s convenient to have all that back-end power for when you need it,” Lucas said. “And I simply like going fast now and then!” A highly experienced fisher, Lucas has had Mercury engines in the past, and they have never let him down, so he saw no reason to look any further when it came to his dream boat. “I’ve put about 100 hours on the motor now, so I’m confident enough to say that it’s working well. The fuel economy is also great. At 4,200 rpm I’m running at 23 knots and using 15.52 litres an hour. The boat has a 65-litre fuel tank, so I have plenty of range for what I do”, says Lucas. kingtidesaltfly.com

A NEW ERA LAUNCHES AT KEV & IAN’S MARINE A
DB385
FTER 30 years of service in the marine industry, Kevin Griffin is selling up to explore numerous other exciting interests. The iconic Kiwi brand launches into a new era under the experienced hand of Luke Sharp from Outboard Marine Technologies. Kev and Ian’s Marine will be relocating to new premises in Wiri. Luke’s relationship with Kev & Ian’s dates back to the 1980s when, as a typical kid overflowing with energy, he would play hide and seek with his mates in the boatyard and was even gifted his first computer by the outgoing Kevin Griffin. In 1998 Luke was placed in charge of spare parts and the showroom at K&I and the real work began culminating in the change of ownership.
Luke brings a steady hand and effective management style into the new look Kev & Ian’s Marine and is firmly set to build on the existing reputation of the company and expand the service offering to include new boat brands and packages. Jo Lomax provides a seamless integration between the past and the present migrating across to the new look K&I as the go-to person for all sales-related matters. Jo will focus on direct sales enquiries and on expanding the new boat offering. The existing chandlery store won’t be moving to Wiri but required chandlery items to fit out and deliver new boats will be kept. Wiri is situated in South Auckland with easy access to both the SH20 & SH1 motorways. www.kev.co.nz

OUTBOARD SALES UP N
MMA has released the first section of its annual statistical abstract detailing trends in the dynamic outboard segment. US retail sales of outboard engines grew another 3% in 2018 to 278,500 units - a 12-year high and the 7th consecutive year of growth. According to America’s National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) which compiles the annual data on the US boating market, the average horsepower of all outboard engines sold last year continued its upward trend as well, hitting a new record of 119.4hp. Nearly one-quarter of outboard engines sold in America - 64,500 units - were 200 horsepower or higher and have doubled in the past five years. Outboard motors rated 300hp and above grew 14.3% year-over-year to 25,388 units up from 9,788 units in 2013 when NMMA first started breakout sales of engines over 200hp.

HUTCHWILCO ISSUES LIFEJACKET RECALL
HYDRIVE FOR THE BEAST One of the most anticipated new Kiwi boats to launch in 2019 is Michael Hill’s, The Beast.
Lifejacket manufacturer Hutchwilco recalls its ‘Fisher Vest’ lifejacket.
T
HE boat has been built by Profab Engineering in Palmerston North and is a giant cat, 40m long and 12m wide. The Beast will carry a sportfishing vessel, as well as other watercraft, and be able to range throughout the Pacific. Auckland based marine supplier Tenob were aboard the vessel to commission the Hydrive E- steering which is integrated with Navis DP (Dynamic Positioning) controls. A vessel of this size needs a substantial and reliable steering system, and for this reason, Tenob supplied a HyDrive fully-integrated E-Series Electronic Steering System with full follow-up capability on a dual motor power-pack with emergency steering and interfaced to the Navis DP system. This allows the skipper to hold the vessel at a particular GPS location as the DP system operates the Hydrive steering, bow and stern thrusters and also engine throttle and gear controls, providing the optimum in steering and station-keeping. The Hydrive steering system was built to Lloyds Specification. ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17
T
he Hutchwilco Fisher Vest is an inflatable lifejacket designed to be worn by fishermen. An issue has been discovered where the inflatable bladder inside the jacket may not fully inflate when activated. “The issue we have discovered is that there is a possibility that the bladder inflation may not burst the zip as designed if it has not been packed correctly,” says Hutchwilco Operations Manager, Bernard Orme. “While the partial inflation will still afford the wearer some positive buoyancy, it is not as designed and certified. After critical evaluation, we decided to carry out a full recall. We have already contacted all the retailers we have sold this product to, and now we need to get the message to the public that has purchased it.” There have been no known injuries or incidents. Since being retailed from the start of this summer, 60 units have been sold to consumers. If you have purchased a Hutchwilco Fisher Vest, return it to your retailer, or contact Hutchwilco - 09 528 0788.

FIRST LOOK MARCO 800 SOUWESTER
FISHING MACHINE Seen recently outside Marco Boats in Morrinsville was this new Marco 800 Souwester, one of the bigger boats in the ever-expanding Marco Boats range.
M
ARCO’S new 800 has been set up with game fishing in mind, with a unique bi-fold door arrangement and windows making the wheelhouse and the cockpit feels like one space. This a boat that will be towing a lot of lures and it was important for the owner to have unimpeded sight of what was happening in the cockpit. The option to close the wheelhouse off combined with its internal
layout makes weekending a comfortable choice too. Its 2.7m beam creates a substantial feel of size internally, while when combined with its custom made alloy trailer means the package doesn’t feel like such a hazard when towing on the road. Named Askari, the 800 Souwester is powered by 300hp G2 Evinrude which gives a maximum speed of 70 km/h. This is

BOAT TEST
SURTEES 750 OPEN CABIN
Now wouldn’t you like this in your driveway? A boat designed 100% for serious fishing.
BUILT TO FISH
About to enter their fourth decade, Surtees Boats was founded in the early 1990s by the fascinating Neil Surtees. Neil is the sort of immensely creative, immensely practical, can’t-stand-still sort of bloke that brings to mind that famous quote from the movie The Castle: “He’s an ideas man.” A keen fisher, Neil was looking for a boat to tackle the big waters out from Whakatane. Unable to find one that met his needs, he simply designed and built his own. He also incorporated many of his great ideas and, before long, other local fishers were taking notice. Not surprisingly, they wanted one, too and Surtees Boats was born. Surtees is now one of (and probably the) largest manufacturer of plate aluminium boats in New Zealand (no mean feat, considering just how many alloy boatbuilders there are in this country). Their range runs from the 495 Workmate up to the 850 Game Fisher and comprises over 21 distinct models. The 750 Game Fisher at the heart of the boat show’s Grand Prize is one of their biggest and is available in two configurations: as an Enclosed Cabin or, like this one, as an Open Cabin. Like all Surtees boats, this year’s Grand Prize is, as the company’s strapline proudly proclaims, “built to fish”. Everything around the marvellously uncluttered

cockpit seems specifically designed to make it easier to fight and land big fish. The rod holders are a good example. There are 21, which is pretty amazing on a 7.5-metre boat. They are well positioned, too. Four down each side deck (three with handy drink holders right alongside); three at the back of the centrally-mounted custom Surtees baitboard; six up in the rocket launcher and another four in a clever mobile rod rack that hangs off the bottom of the side lockers and can be placed anywhere on either side. There is also the obligatory livebait tank under the port step to the platform, wide toe-kicks for bracing oneself when fighting the big ones; wide anti-skid covered gunwales to rest on when the fishing is slow, a large Icy-Tek ice chest to keep the catch cool and a Jabsco washdown pump to make it easy to clean up. The 750’s three batteries (two starting and one house, and their accompanying isolating switches) are in their own locker high up out of harm’s way in the centre of the transom. Alongside, again in their own locker, are the two fuel filters and priming bulbs. The entire cockpit floor, the boarding platform, the bulkheads in the side lockers and even the top of the boarding ladder are attractively protected by comfortable SeaDek flooring. Not only does this look exceptionally good, it is also great to stand on, especially during a long day’s hard fishing. For those that love their gamefishing, the prize package also includes a set of Oceanblue outriggers a comprehensive Hella LED lighting package for night fishing and entertaining. Although the model is known as an Open Cabin, it is actually more of an “open hardtop”. While the helm station and the rest of the area under the hardtop are open to the cockpit, the actual cabin comes with a lockable sliding door, for both privacy and safe stowage. There is also a huge amount of practical stowage in the wheelhouse. There is the big flat area of
WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
frontrunner under the windscreen; two big open lockers in front of the port hand seat; a smaller one in front of the driver; two partially enclosed and another open in the outer port bulkhead and a matching one for the driver. The driver also has a handy space behind the control binnacle and there is yet another open locker under the port seat. One of my pet peeves is a lack of adequate ventilation in a hardtop. Especially when one is slowly trolling for gamefish on a warm summer’s day, the heat and lack of air flow can quickly become Saharalike. Luckily most manufacturers now include sliding windows to help alleviate this but Surtees has gone one better: the bottom of the 750’s centre windscreen panel can pivot open, too. There is no shortage of either comfort or practical electronics here, either. The two main seats are Hi Tech Plastics’ top-of-the-line moveable bolster seats. Exceptionally comfortable and versatile, they enable one to sit in a conventional position, perch high up on the bolster for a raised view or stand supported by the seat at one’s back. There are a plethora of well-positioned USB charging outlets (6 in total), a Hella Marine red/white light centred overhead and the Garmin VHF and Fusion Apollo stereo system handily placed above the windscreen. This latter connects to twin speakers at the forward ends of the side lockers and a big bass speaker installed in the queen seat behind the driver.
To ensure the lucky winner knows both where they are and where the fish are, Garmin have installed an incredibly comprehensive electronics package. Worth more than $17,000, it has at its heart twin 12in GPSMap multi-function displays. Complete with GPS and chartplotter, these also display feeds from the dual CHIRP sonar and 1kW transom mount (able to quickly pick out fish in both shallow inshore waters and in depths up to 600m, and see the seafloor at up to 800m) and the GMR24 high definition radar (boasting a 48 nautical mile range and featuring bird mode and a chart overlay function to make it easier to quickly identify objects, both on shore and at sea, at night). Ensuring the Grand Prize can safely anchor over a favoured fishing spot or in a snug anchorage, Surtees have installed a Lone Star GX3 Drum Winch. A mid sized drum anchor winch worth over $4000, the GX3 features an oversized 1500w IP68-certified waterproof motor, Italian-made transmission, emergency manual release and stainless steel machined and anodised aluminium construction.

or docking in a berth literally as easy as pointing a joystick in the direction you want to travel, it also comes with an array of innovative and very practical applications. Designed primarily for mid-sized and larger outboard-powered boats with two, three or four engines, Helm Master basically takes control of the outboards’ gear shifting and throttle functions, especially at low speeds. Using Helm Master’s intuitive joystick, one can literally manoeuvre in any direction: fore and aft, diagonally or around in circles. While that might sound more fun than practical, believe me, it’s not. For example, on the Grand Prize’s inaugural run on Lake Rotoma, in a steadily mounting breeze, I needed to bring the boat alongside the jetty. Normally, this would be a bit challenging: approaching an unprotected wharf, downwind, in a fair breeze, in an unfamiliar, reasonably high-sided boat. With Helm Master, it was a piece of the proverbial. I just set up the boat on a diagonal heading and used the joystick to counteract the wind and slow the approach. As we came alongside, the joystick enabled me to simply hold the 750 parallel to the jetty while the lines were attached. In addition to this virtually total control over the boat’s low speed manoeuvring, Helm Master has a number of other features that are especially appealing to those who love to fish. These SetPoint modes include StayPoint, FishPoint and DriftPoint. In StayPoint, one can select a GPS point and the boat will head straight there and will then maintain station, using the Helm Master to hold both its position and its heading. FishPoint is used to hold a position over a reef or other structure and DriftPoint ensures the boat maintains its heading as it drifts. Another feature, Pattern Shift, enables trolling at speeds below what would normally be possible, down to as slow 0.4 knots. By combining Yamaha’s enhanced binnacle control, its Command Link Plus CL7 Premium Touchscreen Gauge, push-button start/ stop switches, an RFID key fob and that innovative joystick, Helm Master also allows skipper to use those SetPoint modes to move forward, rearward or sideward by 300mm increments or rotate the bow by 5 degrees at a time.
CUSTOM TRAILER
The Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize boat comes complete with a very special Hosking Custom Tandem Trailer. Specially designed and built for the Grand Prize, it comes complete with a Trailparts Credo multi-volt, wireless brake controller. This will allow the lucky winner to simply “plug in and go”, using any vehicle with a 3500kg towing capacity without having to install a hard-wired brake controller. The custom Hosking trailer, worth around $18,500, also features multi-rollers, a self-centring roller combination and a 15:1 NZmade winch. Rated to 3500kg, the maximum for a light trailer on New Zealand roads, it comes complete with Treadway light commercial tyres and fantastic-looking alloy rims. It is also fitted with a Balex Auto Boat Loader, worth an additional $7500. With the Balex Auto Boat Loader one can launch or retrieve the boat with a simple push of the button on the remote control. One can be on board, on the ramp or on the jetty, it really doesn’t matter and this will be a real boon if the winner is launching or retrieving singlehanded in unpleasant conditions. Rounding out this quarter of a million dollars worth of prize boat is a full set of Hutchwilco inflatable lifejackets and a year’s Yamaha Marine Insurance.

Our website www.boatmags.com has a surprising number of hits on older articles, especially the technical ones, so we thought we would start rerunning some of the more popular ones. We start with Adjusting Your Attitude (www.boatmags.com/trim-tabs/) which offers an insight into trim tabs. However, this time we have also added a buyer’s guide to all the main brands, so you can understand more about the different styles and models.

ADJUSTING YOUR ATTITUDE GONE ARE THE DAYS OF PLAYING AROUND WITH YOUR TRIM BUTTONS TO GET THE BOAT’S ATTITUDE RIGHT. YOU CAN NOW LEAVE IT ALL TO HIGHLY ADVANCED ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS THAT DO THE THINKING FOR YOU. There is one thing that really upsets me it’s a boat that’s not trimmed right. If it’s not trimmed properly then chances are it isn’t giving you and your crew the best possible ride. It’s a misconception that boats need trim tabs only if they are not set up correctly in the first place. That may have been the case years ago before deep V and lightweight hulls came on the scene, but today, trim tabs do make a worthwhile difference to even the best-designed hulls. The boats that perhaps benefit most by the fitting of trim tabs are the larger production cabin boats of the 5 - 8 m variety that due to the very nature of their topside profile, lean (heel) into the wind. This is especially so with hardtops, because the wind tends to blow any planing boat off course, and to hold course the boat must be steered into the wind. The fact that the helm is turned to keep the boat on course causes any planing hull that normally banks inwards when turning (i.e. all monohulls), to bank (heel) into the wind. Here you are, trying to drive across a short harbour chop with the boat heeling 20 deg to windward. As the boat is driven through the water, the tendency to flop onto one chine results in a harder ride, that is uncomfortable and also makes the whole rig harder to drive. You spend all your time trying in vain to correct the boat’s angle of heel through engine trim and throttle response. Trimming a boat through the outboard or sterndrive will not stop heeling. But when used in a combination with trim tabs, it’s a different story and the result is more efficiency, performance and better overall handling. There are essentially four different systems available when it comes to adjusting the riding attitude of your hull, not counting outboard engine or stern drive leg trim. Firstly there is the most common and widely used, trim tab, that sees a hinged plate either side of the transom. Then there are the fully automatic of fixed self-levelling systems, that react instantly to water pressure and if you don’t want to fix anything to the transom then you can look at foils that bolt onto the outboard or sterndrive trim plate. In recent years we have seen another option, the interceptor, that brings a whole new dynamic to trim tab design.

INTERCEPTORS SAME BUT DIFFERENT
I
NTERCEPTORS are a very unique answer to the question of boat trim and while until recently were the domain of bigger boats (over 12m) they are now readily available and specifically designed for trailer boats. There are four brands of interceptors available in Australasia, with three from Sweden; Humphree, (also marketed through Volvo Penta as I.S) the first to commercially promote interceptor technology, Zipwake, who offer a broad range of units especially suitable for both cruisers and trailer boats and Volvo Penta with their Boat Trim System (BTS). Hydrotab one of the newer arrival on the interceptor scene is made in Greece. The basic principle of the interceptor blade is to create pressure underneath the hull, at the stern of the boat. The pressure is created when the blade is deployed into the water flow underneath the hull. Despite what you first might think there is only a minor deployment needed to create a large lift force under the hull. This lift will change the running trim of the vessel resulting in a lower wave resistance. The interceptor’s main function is to create a lift force in order to reduce the hull’s wave resistance. The same function is generated by a traditional trim tab. With reduced wave resistance, the interceptor generates more lift force and less drag than trim tabs. The key to achieve good results is the speed of control. Traditional trim tabs are generally very slow as a result of the amount of water they need to push when deflecting the tab. As such, the automatic functionality will suffer severely not being able to handle the motions in a safe and comfortable manner. Since the interceptor blade does not push away the water, it can move easy, allowing them to move much faster than trim tabs. All interceptor systems electric powered by 12-24 Volt DC. Thanks to the design of the Interceptor it only requires a small amount of power to move the blade up and down, even under high-speed operation. The Interceptor blade is controlled by an electronic actuator, which is designed to move the blade a full stroke as fast as 1 sec, which is considerably faster than conventional trim tabs. By their design they are lighter than most trim tabs can also integrate easier to the transom and in some cases can be custom shaped with a curve to follow the shape of the hull bottom. That means it is possible custom design interceptors to fit a trim system over a propeller tunnel or partly over the chine, as the shape of the interceptor can follow almost any hull curvature. In difference from most trim tab designs, the interceptors are constructed out of composite materials. This means that you get a light construction that has almost zero added mass and it also leaves out all worries regarding corrosion problems and the need of zinc anodes. Until recently interceptors have been traditional designed for larger
Since 2001, Humphree has provided interceptor stabiliser systems for around 1,500 boats from 12m to 100m.
HUMPHREE Since 2001, when the Swedish company Humphree was formed, it has provided interceptor stabiliser systems for around 2000 boats from 12m to 100m. However while the original Humphree series are offered in sizes from 350mm to 1500mm and various designs to fit hull shapes for boats from 12m to 200m+, they recently developed the X Series, a standardised interceptor for boats as small as 7.5m. This new X Series features all the same auto trim, auto list, co-ordinated turn and active rode control of the larger Humphree systems. They are available in five standard sizes; 300mm, 450mm, 600mm , 750mm and 900mm. Plus are fully customisable.

The Zipwake, Dynamic Trim Control System (DTCS) comes in four model sizes, suitable for planning and semi planning boats from 6m to 18m. Hydrotab’s are based on a innovative pneumatic mechanism, with no rotating parts
ZIPWAKE Another Swedish company, Zipwake also offers smaller units for trailer boats as well as larger cruisers. The Zipwake, Dynamic Trim Control System (DTCS) comes in four model sizes, suitable for planning and semi planning boats from 6m to 18m. One unique feature to Zipwake is they offer two alternatives for the cable through the transom, either above the waterline or concealed through the hull. The above waterline option is an important factor to consider when retrofitting the units to trailer boats with moulded or glassed in cockpit floors, making access difficult. Each Zipwake control panel is fitted with an internal GPS and equipped to read additional GPS source information (NMEA2000 and NMEA0183). The Zipwake Dynamic Trim Control System will automatically use the source with the best information to trim the boat. While the system is fully automatic, it will also let the operator adjust the pitch and roll settings manually to compensate for variations in different conditions, such as load.
HYDROTAB Hydrotab, made in Greece, are based on an innovative pneumatic mechanism, with no rotating parts, servomotors or other sensitive units. The housing is constructed by high quality Inox 316 stainless steel, while the blade is made by lightweight composite material which is resistant to sea fouling. There are seven models in the range, starting with the 300ΒΤ which are suitable for 4.5 to 6.7m boats, right through to the 2000BT designed for boats over 27m. Hydrotabs are available with either 12v or 24v operation. Controlling is done through a standard LED position indicator controller, or the 4DHC controller which includes an internal or NMEA 2000 GPS antenna, Gyro and accelerometer all displayed on a 3.2” intelligent display.

TRIM TAB – MATURING WITH AGE
WITH 3D
TECHNOLOGY YOU SHOULDN’T FISH WITHOUT
W Ordinary sounders depict fish directly under your vessel, but 3D provides positional awareness – this is how DEEP, or how far LEFT or RIGHT a target is in relation to your vessel. Raymarine 3D now provides a reality that you can clearly understand. Fish targets are clearly marked in colour in any direction around your vessel, with structures shown in high definition. 3D effectively provides ten times the fish search area, maximising your time in the water!
10X THE AREA COVERED
HEN trim tabs first arrived on the boating scene they were an allmanual affair. You simply set them up for what you felt would be the best attitude for the boat, by winding a worm-screw device. Hard to adjust underway, but you could always stop, re-adjust and carry on. Crude but effective! Then along came the manually operated hydraulic tabs, such as the Gibson and Blackwell, which relied on oil pressure to push the tabs down. These were all good, until an oil hose dislodged or split from the unit. I can well remember the pressure on my arm when trying to hold down a set of Gibson tabs for nearly an hour during a particularly rough Auckland powerboat race. This also eventually proved too much for the lightly built plastic hydraulic lines, when one split, leaking hydraulic fluid all through the boat and us with no functioning tabs. Advancements were not only made in tab design, but also the mechanisms that operated them and today we have two main types of actuator mechanism in use electro-mechanical and electro-hydraulic. The current electro-hydraulic systems are a development of the original hydraulic systems that mostly use a 12 volt reversing motor to drive a small high pressure hydraulic pump and oil reservoir in a self contained unit which mounts on the inside of the transom close to the trim tabs. A short hydraulic line connects the pump to the ram, often through the ram base plate by way of a hole drilled in the tr8ansom. This means there are generally no external oil lines to catch or foul. The direction of the electric motor is controlled from the dash via the trim switches. Solenoids on the motor handle the heavy electrical switching so the wiring to the dash can be relatively light and easy to install. Electro-mechanical is basically an electric motor coupled to a worm drive. They are quick reacting, very positive and don’t creep. They will generally withstand greater loads than a hydraulic system.

LAB0273
The size of trim tab required depends on your boat, its performance and exactly what you want to achieve. A rule of thumb is that for an average 229 mm long (transom to trailing edge) plate, 2.5cm of tab width is needed for every 30cm of boat length (i.e. the tab width should be about 1/12 of the boat length). Plates are made from a variety of materials- cast aluminium alloy, fabricated stainless steel, GRP and even advanced composites. Likewise, ram sizes and the numbers required to activate a trim tab cannot be decided without knowing all the information, so buyers should be guided by a reputable supplier. However, the stresses and strains a trim tab endures are enormous and incorrectly installed or supported plates will more than likely bend or break. Contrary to popular belief, the neutral position for a transom mounted trim tab is not when it is positioned to form a continuation of the planing surface, but when it is raised slightly to align with the flow of the water leaving the transom. As an extension of the planing surface the tab is still generating lift. When the tab is fully raised, air should flow

in under the plate. Once this happens the tab ceases to exert any force and the hull is restored to its normal trim. The position of the tab, relative to the planing surface and the chine is critical so if you are going to fit them yourself, read the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly. Remember, as almost all outboards and sterndrives now have power trim, the primary reason for fitting trim tabs to boats powered by outboards or sterndrives is to more easily keep the boat from heeling into a cross-wind. Locating the tabs as far apart as possible minimises the amount of uplift force needed to correct for heel into a crosswind, and therefore minimises the downward angle needed on one tab, which in turn minimises the drag force incurred. Hence, the further apart the tabs can be fitted the better.
DOING THE THINKING FOR YOU It is not only the interceptors that are intelligent enough to do the trim adjustment for you, it’s also available on the standard trim tab. There are two types of self-levelling trim tabs, auto levelling and smart or fixed tabs, which are designed to do the thinking for you, but just they do it a different way and at a very different cost. Just about every manufacturer offers an auto levelling systems, (Mente Marine’s Attitude Control System (ACS) is available to suit most brands of trim tabs), that react to boat trim and balance and work much the same way as the interceptors by using sensors to detect your boat’s deviation and sends a continuous signal to the CPU. The CPU is the brains of the system and this determines how the trim tabs should be adjusted, and communicates this corrective information to the master module. The on-board computer learns and stores the characteristics of the boat in its memory and uses this information for precise and efficient trim tab correcting. Right at the other end is the fixed tab which is the most inexpensive system, as offered by Bennett and the Nauticus, which both self-regulate by reacting instantly to water pressure. Whatever system you decide on, be it an interceptor or trim tab, or even something as simple as a fixed tab, they all work. Some perhaps work better than others and in the end it’s about finding one that suite your boat and of course your budget.

Lenco’s Auto Glide system uses GPS Data (& engine data depending on setup) to drive your boat to its most efficient running angle.
NAUTICUS SMART TABS If you are looking for tabs that are very basic, but do the job, then you maybe you should consider a pair of Nauticus Smart Tabs. They are completely automatic requiring no operator adjustment while underway. There are no internal switches, wiring or indicators. Smart Tabs are self adjust according to how you load and manoeuver your boat. They are suitable for boats from 3.5m through to 10m. The nitrogen gas actuator provides lift at the stern of the boat by holding the trim plate down during acceleration. The amount of lift is determined by the actuator load rating and the trim plate adjustment, which is done at the time of installation. There are a number of different models and sizes, plus the Smart Tabs SX is built from a composite material so an ideal fit to smaller alloy boats. Installation is all outboard so they are very quick and easy retrofit to any boat.
LENCO MARINE Lenco Marine manufacturing not only trim tabs but also electric actuators, hatch lifts, switches and the Auto Glide boat leveling system. Lenco make a range of trim tabs to suit smaller trailer boats right through to larger cruisers. They are all constructed of 7-12 gauge stainless, depending on the model and range in plate size from 23cm x 23cm to 30cm x 106cm with single or twin actuators. However, there are special models available with a 10cm x 30cm plate size if you have limited space and the high performance tabs which range from 30cm to 35.5cm wide and 73.5 cm length. Lenco have a variety of tabs to suit just about any boats. Lenco’s uses a ballscrew design which features an instant response, and is very user friendly compared to typical hydraulics. The Lenco Auto Glide system controls your trim tabs from the time you leave your dock until you come home again! It uses engine data and GPS data (depending on your installation method) to drive your boat to the most efficient running angle by adjusting your Lenco trim tabs as needed. This optimum running angle is determined during the set-up process after the installation of your Auto Glide system.
Bennett’s electronic indicator control has a built in trim tab Indicator and auto tab Retractor.
Bennett’s 12 x 13 heavy duty tab uses twin rams for superior control.
UFLEX BENNETT MARINE
A unique feature of the Uflex electromechanical trim tabs is that they are controlled by a joystick. Uflex have replaced the standard rocker switch control with their Easy Joy joystick control. Press the joystick to the right and that’s the way your boat goes. Pull the stick back and both tabs go up, or forward for both tabs down. That’s the UFlex joystick. It’s simple to get your hands on in rough seas, and keep your controls at your fingertips. It also has auto tab retractor when shifting into neutral. It raises one tab while dropping the other for much quicker response. The stainless steel plates are available from 23cm x 23cm to 30.5cm x 46cm and suitable for boats from 4.5m through to 11.0m. They are polished to a mirror finish on the top, which will help keep them stain free longer. The bottom is unpolished matte finish. The tabs are very rigid with the multiple bends across the surface, and downward batwing edges. This batwing style of trim tab is the most efficient design for stabilising side to side shifts, as the wings act as mini rudders. The wings also compress the water and give the trim tab more performance. ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17
Bennett Marine offer four different trim tab styles in either electric or hydraulic, from the basic spring loaded self levelling tabs through to the Premium hydraulic. BLUEWATER 9.3 WALKABOUT
The walkaround configuration makes the 9.3 Bluewater ideal for charter fishing.
C
HARTER BOATS AREN’T SOMETHING WE’VE TRADITIONALLY REVIEWED OVER THE YEARS, but occasionally one comes up that is worth taking a closer look at and Smith’s Bluewater 9.3, aptly named Beast is one such example. Launched in December 2018, Beast has had a busy start to its chartering life, already logging up close to 400 hours in just four months. Setting about specifying the layout and configuration of his new boat for charter, Smith says there were a number of things that were must-haves for the new build. “Obviously we wanted the walkaround design which was key, and to go with that a long cabin area, with seating for nine. Nine was the number I had in my head to keep the charter cost down to a reasonable amount for clients,” says Smith. Beast is based on the standard 9.3m Bluewater hull with a 3.0m beam. This gives you a lot of internal real estate to customise to suit your needs. The layout of Beast certainly reflects that with many of Smith’s ideas built into the boat. “My last boat was a tri-hull which was very stable, so I didn’t want to lose any of that stability with the new boat. The extra wide Bluewater hull has proven a great boat with plenty of room,” says Smith. Construction is heavy duty and reflects the type of offshore work the boat is being asked to do. The bottom and transom are 6mm aluminium, with the stringers and frames 6mm and 5mm respectively. ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17

Sides, top deck, cabin and bulkhead are all 4mm alloy. “All of the boats are built to survey spec, so what we take our standard hull and custom build from there,” adds Paul Colcord of Bluewater Boats. Bluewater Boats are no stranger to building boats to survey and commercial standards having built a number of the Coastguard RIB fleet for Naiad. Built tough? You bet. CUSTOM LAYOUT Starting aft, there is a sizeable boarding platform on both sides of the 300hp Suzuki outboard. A cage around the exterior provides extra safety for anglers, with a sturdy drop down ladder which is an intergral part of the cage, providing access into the boat in the port corner. “I wanted a big boarding area with a full cage, with plenty of room so that you could still fish two people back there,” commented Smith. The cockpit itself is quite sizeable with a large bait station in the centre of the transom fitted with two Tuna tubes, as well as a live bait tank underneath, which can be accessed by lifting one of two hatches above. These also double as cutting boards. “All we do is lure fishing which keeps the boat nice and tidy. But there is a big live bait tank, the Tuna and some good workspace to help rig up live baits.” The rest of the boat’s layout is very spacious, with room to navigate to the bow, via the very wide walkaround, which enables anglers to fish right around the boat. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
Clockwise: A spacious and versatile layout The caged transom area provides plenty of protection for anglers. Rod storage comes via racks in the roof of the cabin area. A clean and functional dash area. Plenty of seating for passengers when underway.
“Having plenty of room with a walk around was key for me as I didn’t want nine people crammed into the cockpit. On a daily basis we’ll probably have five down the side, maybe six up the front – everyone spreads out, the layout and configuration work really well.” The cabin area has two bench seats on either side, with storage underneath for passenger gear as well lifejackets. Forward, in the closeable lower cabin is a toilet and sink for passengers to use when out on an excursion. One thing that was noticeable from the helm of Beast was the 360-degree visibility. “When underway it’s great to be able to have visibility around the boat. Even if passengers are sitting down, I can still see over there heads, which is important for keeping an eye on other boats moving up behind us, or even being able to keep an eye out the window and watch for workups and birds.”

SUZUKI POWER Smith’s previous boat was diesel powered, and now with his first foray to a four-stroke outboard, he says there is no looking back. “The outboard is a lot easier on maintenance, much tidier has no oil leaks in the bilge, and all you have to do is pull it out of the water once a month and get the 100-hour service done. “When it comes to repower further down the track, the whole process can be done a lot quicker which is attractive when you are running a business like this’, says Smith. He adds that Suzuki offers a two-year commercial warranty on the outboards, which is generally the time period where you will look to change the engine out anyways. Beast is powered by a single 300hp Suzuki FourStroke fed by a sizeable 400L fuel tank, which will give it a 210 nautical mile range at a cruise of 20 knots.
ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17
BOAT TEST
BLUEWATER 9.3 WALKABOUT
Plenty room in the bow for casting. Further room around the sides for anglers.
“The idea behind the boat is to be quick, get out to the fishing spots and do two trips a day leaving from Half Moon Bay, so that’s why we went for the 300hp outboard. Enough grunt to get the boat moving, yet fast enough and economical enough to get from A to B with relative ease. “All year round we are fishing anywhere between Waiheke and the Coromandel, and on a longer day, we might go to Little Barrier or Great Barrier” Smith says. I thought the 300hp Suzuki was a good match and delivered some fantastic performance figures. On our test day with three passengers onboard the Suzuki at a cruise of 20 knots @ 4000 rpm delivered a fuel burn of 34.5 lph. Wide-open throttle delivered 33 knots @ 5500 rpm and used 91 lph. At a trolling speed of 7.0 knots @ 2250rpm, fuel use was 13.0 lph. Throttle response was great, and once up on the plane, the engine noise was quite minimal. When I asked Smith about what he would change on the boat, he says there there wasn’t too much, apart
SPECIFICATIONS
from a few future planned add ons. “I want to get a radar and autopilot fitted and though the boat is quite stable already, I will maybe look at adding a Gyro stabiliser, which will help some of my passengers feel a little more comfortable when it’s a bit rougher. It’s just a fact that some people do get seasick, will be nice to have a boat where they don’t.” BUILT FOR PURPOSE Overall, a great rig, ideal for its purpose. Would the layout suit everyone’s need? No probably not. However, what it is, is an excellent demonstration of going to a custom builder who already has the base boat configuration such as the hull sorted, and allowing you to customise and fit out your dream interior. Beast hit the water for around $220,000 excluding a trailer. If you’re looking for a custom alloy boat, and have a modest budget in mind, then Bluewater should be on your shortlist.

The first known electric outboard motor was a small 5 kilogram unit designed around 1870 by Frenchman Gustave Pierre Trouvé.
The first known electric outboard motor was a small 5 kilogram unit designed around 1870 by Frenchman Gustave Pierre Trouvé, and patented in May 1880. In that same year he improves the efficiency of a small electric motor developed by Siemens and feeds it with the recently developed accumulator and rides it on a Starley brand tricycle, thereby inventing the world’s first electric vehicle. He then adapts his battery engine to marine propulsion, to facilitate the transport of the marine propulsion system between his workshop and the Seine. Technical he had just invented the world’s first outboard motor, although it would take Ole Evinrude many years later, in 1907, to develop the first commercially successful outboard. On May 26, 1881, a prototype of 5m long electric outboard powered boat was built by Trouve and baptised “The Phone”, reaches a speed of 9 km/h. Electric outboards have been slow to develop, but in recent years there has been a reknewed interest due to their clean green environmental acceptable image. In fact many lakes around the world – Lake Pupuke in Auckland for example – ban traditional petroleum based power. There are two types of electric outboards, the ones used as the main propulsion unit and hung on the transom and then there are the thrusters or trolling motors, which are more likely to be found hanging from the bow. While there are dozens of brands available, especially out of China, when it comes to the ‘traditional’ style

electric outboard, the main players are Aquawatt, Elco, ePropulsion and Torqueedo. Each offers a range of electric engines, some with integrated batteries and they range from 1hp to 80hp. There have been larger horsepower electric outboards promoted over recent years, but none have got into main stream production. In 2018 Jaguar Vector Racing broke the outright world electric speed record in a battery-powered boat, with a speed of 88.61 mph, using Williams Advanced Engineering Formula E engine technology. However, it is the trolling market that has done a lot to promote electric outboard power and nonemoreso than in the fishing market. While they have been mainstream on every Bass boat in the US for years, it’s only recently that we have seen a swing to trolling motors on locally built boats. While they have been more common on boats under about 5.5m, manufacturers are now offering extralong shafts. Both Motorguide and Minn Kota have models with 1.52m and 1.82m lengths, which are suitable for larger trailer boats. It is now commonplace to see boats, alloy especially, with a trolling motor sitting along the foredeck. Many alloy manufacturers even have a dedicated mount as a standard feature on some of their models. If you are looking at installing a trolling motor on the bow, you firstly need a flat mounting plate, but also you will have to eliminate or dramatically change your bowrails.

ELECTRIC OUTBOARDS
BATTERY CHOICES Unlike an electric
outboard, many of which comes with an integrated battery, trolling motors are all get their power externally. It is a good idea to have a separate battery and not run off the main battery, as they do use up plenty of power when used constantly. The number of electric motoring hours depends on your battery bank combined with any generated capacity (from solar, wind or other sources). According to Mastervolt, for six to eight hours of operation, you need 4.6 times the motor’s power output in kWh. Example: 4.6 x 3.5kW = 16.1kWh; this is the battery capacity required for six to eight hours of e-powering. When shopping for a battery there are four categories: Flooded lead acid: most affordable are 6V deep cycle batteries, often used in electric golf cart, with a typical capacity of 200250Ah. They are economical and are built for deep discharges. They need to be mounted upright and receive regular addition of distilled water. They also emit hydrogen gas when recharging. AGM batteries: are fully sealed, maintenance-free, handle high recharging current and can be mounted in any position. Gel cells: are sealed, maintenance free, with a long lifespan allowing a large number of charging and discharging cycles. They are excellent as a service battery for medium and large systems. Lithium-ion: batteries are top quality but most expensive, with highly advanced technology. They have a high energy density and are perfect for deep cycling applications. Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, Lithium-ion batteries offer savings of up to 70 % in volume and weight, while the number of charging cycles is three times as large. To use an example, a 55 lb thrust motor unit has a peak power draw of 40 amps. If you use the trolling motor for 6 hours at average 50% load of 20 amps, the trolling motor will then require a battery load of 120 Ah. The choice in New Zealand is limited to three main brands, Minn Kota, MotorGuide and Watersnake. Check out the internet and you will plenty more, such as Parsun, but locally they are not available and a myriad of brand names you will never have heard of. While the market is dominated by Minn Kota and MotorGuide , you have plenty of choices, but just make sure you know what you are buying and is there any back-up or service? When you do decide on what brand of trolling motor to buy, make sure it is suitable for your boat. Things to consider might not only be the weight of the unit, but where it is going to be mounted, the static thrust output (more thrust = more power) and the shaft length. If the shaft is too short when fully extended it may spend it’s time with the prop on the surface and its ability to perform and add ‘bite’ underwater will be negated. There are also different mounting options when it comes to the controls. You have the basic manual operation which is common in the smaller units, foot operated which is designed for using on the casting deck, or the more sophisticated ones with GPS and the control hanging on a lanyard around your neck.

ELECTRIC THRUSTER ENGINES MINN KOTA
In 1934, O.G. Schmidt invented the first gear-driven electric trolling motor in Fargo, North Dakota, when he took a starter motor from a Ford Model A, added a flexible shaft, and a propeller. The idea took off with anglers looking for more boat control, and Schmidt named the growing company for the land he called home: in the heart of fishing country, on the MINNesota-North DaKOTA border, Minn Kota was born. Since then, the company haven’t stopped evolving and innovating. From foot pedals to bend-don’tbreak composite shafts, and variable speed controls to GPS-controlled trolling motors. They offer an integrated sonar systems, wireless remote controls and 112-pound thrust motors. Motors are available for both saltwater and freshwater applications The i-Pilot makes your boat control automatic — and i-Pilot Link adds total integration. It works with your Humminbird fish finder. You can store and return to any Humminbird waypoint, control your motor from your fish finder, follow depth contours automatically, and more. In 2015 the company introduced the first auto stow/ deploy bow mount with integrated GPS. The powerful 80lb and 112lb thrust Ulterra, remains the only trolling motors on the market with automatic lift assist, so you can do everything from the helm or cockpit. Minn Kota offer 14 models from 40lbs thrust to 112lbs thrust if either 12v/24v or 36v voltage. Minn Kota also offer MEGA Down Imaging to select a Minn Kota Ulterra, Terrova, Ultrex or Fortrex trolling motors. The transducer is housed in the indestructible lower motor unit and the wiring runs through the composite shaft providing clean rigging that is protected from wear and tear. In addition, having the transducer integrated into the trolling motors allows you to see what is directly below the bow of the boat, allowing you to make better decisions on where, and how, to fish. Along with a full suite of bow-, transom- and enginemounted trolling motors, the company also offers the Talon family of shallow-water anchors, plus onboard and portable battery chargers, drift socks and more. The Minn Kota i-Pilot links with your Humminbird fish finder.

MOTORGUIDE MotorGuide started in the late 1960s as Guide-Rite, and since the late ‘60s has continued to develop its ever expanding range of electric outboards. In 1971 they became the first company to allow flat storage along the bow of boat. This was made possible due to a newly designed bracket concept that included angled arms and a main brace that allowed for flat-storage, but to also extend into the water for use. Something that every trolling motor has today. In 1974 MotorGuide was acquired by Brunswick Corporation and became part of their Zebco fishing tackle operation before being absorbed into Mercury Marine. Improvements quickly followed such as the Digital Guardian module that has greatly improved durability and Wireless Series Trolling Motors that showcase a built-in wireless receiver that is compatible with up to four wireless components at one time, including a foot pedal and hand-held remote option. Amongst their latest developments have been GPS availability on some of their 28 models.
MotorGuide’s wireless operation means the foot pedal features an intuitive heel-toe steering control. Controls are positioned to provide easy trolling-motor navigation that allows the angler to focus on fishing. MotorGuide’s range starts with the X3 at 45 lbs thrust through to the Xi5 with 105lbs of thrust. Depending on the model, the MotorGuide requires 12/24 or 36 volts. The Xi5-105 is the only model available with the ultra long 1.82m shaft length.

ePROPULSION A team of four engineers from Hong Kong University designed a series of electric outboards and founded their own company called ePropulsion. The brand has gained traction in Europe and Asia, and recently, Electric Power and Propulsion NZ (EPP NZ), a company based in Auckland, has stepped up to become the sole NZ. importer for the outboard line. The products include motors for everything from stand up paddleboards to 10hp (equivalent) motors for sailboats and small craft. Benefits of ePropulsion electric motors are they are silent (less than 55bd for the Spirit 1.0 - this is the comparable volume of a normal conversation) lifetime maintenance free, and are Zero Emission, making them a sustainable option that’s also more economical and efficient than running gas combustion engine. Top of the line are the Navy models, producing 4hp and 6hp, running off 48 volts and weighing in at 26.8 kg. They utilise an external battery bank and available options include remote or tiller steering. Navy 6.0 (6hp equivilant) features close looped cooling technology making it the first electric outboard to use this technology. The Spirit model lands squarely in ePropulsion’s middle range, and is the most likely candidate to power a tender. Spirit matches an equivalent 3-4 horsepower gas combustion engine. The motor includes a foldable tiller and removable battery, making stowage a snap. At 9.5KG plus 8.5KG for the battery, the total assembled weight is still 6.3KG lighter than a comparable 4-stroke gas outboard. The other difference — and it’s a big one — is that the weight of the gas engine is fixed, whereas with the removable 1018Wh Lithium polymer battery, the weight is easily halved into separate carry bags. The battery floats if it is accidentally dropped into the water.

AQUAWATT
Aquawatt have electric outboards from 20hp through to 70hp.
Aquawatt is an electric boat motor manufacturer based in Austria (Europe) building high end handmade electric inand outboard drives for boats for over 20 years. The outboard range offers motors from 13 KW to 44 KW output (20-70 hp) with battery supply voltages from 48 to 144 volts. The motors are powered by electric induction motors, which provide higher torque and an extremely long lifetime due to the lack of permanent magnets and
brushes used in standard DC motors. The outboard motors use a standard Yamaha type outboard leg, which enables the use of standard props for any application. The battery power is converted by an integrated Curtis controller which offer reliable and performant operation for recreational or professional use. The motors can be powered with AGM (lead acid) or Lithium batteries.

BOAT TEST
IMAGE 8.5 FISHMASTER
CONVENTIONAL LAYOUT
This Page: At nearly 3500 kgs and beam of 2.9m it’s a big boat to tow. Top speed was 40.5 knots, but we spent most of the day on the lake at around 26 knots.
W
HILE YOU MIGHT THINK to review a bluewater fishing boat on a lake is hardly giving the boat a serious workout, you might be surprised what you learn. With 20 knots across Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, and less than .5m chop on the surface, the Image 8.5 Fishmaster took it in its stride. Well, I would have expected nothing less. Here I was in an 8.5m, 3000 kg plus twin rigged hardtop, stack with fishing armoury, such as a pot hauler, Simrad 16” MFD, twin drop down dive ladders and a huge bait station and not a cray, snapper, grouper or trev in sight. The reason we were on Lake Wakatipu was the owner of the boat is an Arrowtown resident and plans to use the boat not only on Wakatipu but also trail it across to the West Coast and also to Stewart Island. Manurere will also be used for commercial purposes around Stewart Island. In fact, he is a born and bred Stewart Islander and has spent his life commercial fishing around Stewart Island and Fiordland. Crays, blue cod, sharks, oysters and even eels (from Lake Wakatipu) he has targeted them all. However, when retirement came along, he still had the urge to get out on the water and was looking for a specific boat that would cater to all his needs. Not only did he want a tough, go anywhere fishing boat, but it had to also double as a weekender on the water and a partial caravan on the land. Dean Wilkes, the owner of Image Boats Ltd, says that it’s surprising how many of his clients utilise his larger boats as a multi-purpose caravan and boat. With everything from the bed to the galley, holding tank, toilet and shower, a boat like Manurere are perfect for anyone looking at trailering to remote areas.
ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17

The layout is reasonably standard and as you might expect to find in a hardtop of this size. Forward is the main accommodation area with a lower v-berth that has an infill to transform into an extra large bed. There is also a pipe berth either side, so along with the dinette table that also converts to a double, the 8.5 Fishmaster provides sleeping space for six. Storage is available under the lower squabs and inside trays, plus there is an easy access panel in behind the dash if you need to get into work on any wiring. I was impressed with the excellent headroom when standing in the forward cabin and uninterrupted flow through to the wheelhouse. While the 8.5 Fishmaster has been around for a few years now, Manurere is the first with the wide beam hull. Dean explained that by taking the beam from 2.7m out to 2.9m has allowed for an extra 200mm in the wheelhouse. The difference is noticeable in the dinette which with the additional beam is now a comfortable four-seater and also aft in the shower/ toilet cubicle with more space to do whatever you need to do in there. I was pleased to see the head/ shower outside in the cockpit, where not only can
WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
the odours drift away but if you need to use it at night, then you don’t disturb people inside. The dinette comes with a reversible forward backrest and as mentioned also converts to another large berth. There is storage under the forward seat and a freezer under the aft seat. The helm opposite has been fitted with an extralarge Simrad 16 NSS MFD which eliminates the need for any engine instruments. Space around the screen is taken up with switches, the Simrad autopilot and controls for the Savwinch and trim tabs. Overhead is an ICOM VHF and Fusion entertainment system. Aft of the helm seat, which as a fridge built into the base is the galley, complete with a Dometic 2-burner cooktop, stainless sink and storage drawers beneath. As one of the owner’s requests was for a Nespresso coffee machine, there’s also a 2kW inverter. It’s a very cosy and quiet wheelhouse when underway, with the bonus of a Fusion entertainment system, opening side windows for extra ventilation, but also a Webasto diesel heater for the cold southern boating weather.
WORKINGMAN’S COCKPIT It’s when you start looking over the cockpit that you appreciate that this boat, like 99% of all Image boats is destined to be a fishing platform. Uncluttered space is the best way to describe it, and everything is right where it should be. To starboard is the James Nilson pot hauler, forward enough to be out of the way when bottom fishing, but close enough to get at when required. There are storage trays either side and plenty of rod holders in the side decks and overhead. A central bait station comes with a built-in tackle locker under the cutting board, with battery storage below. Being an alloy boat the way you configure the transom is up to you. In Manurere the owner chose twin transom access with a drop down dive ladder either side and high transom cages. A soft bimini keeps off the sun rays or rain and can be folded up out of the way if not required. There is also a massive wet locker in the cockpit sole.

Clockwise: The unique South Island boat builder’s forward fold out steps. Having the head/ shower outside in the cockpit, means an odour free wheelhouse The central bait station has storage under for the batteries and your fishing gear. Twin Suzuki 325s provided ample power and exceptional economy. The cockpit is designed for fishing. Note the cage around the aft Platform.

the rear door closed the wheelhouse was quiet and we could talk at a normal level. I found the steering a little too light and sensitive for my liking, but that was only a matter of adjustment — certainly torque free and finger touch. Top speed was 40.5 knots, but we spent most of the day on the lake at around 4000 rpm @ 26 knots. This returned a reasonable fuel figure of 73.3 lph and a range of approximately 150nm.
The 8.5 Fishmaster is rated from 300hp to 700hp, inboard or twin outboard, with Manurere running a pair of Suzuki DF325A outboards. To date, it’s 80% outboard/20% diesel sterndrive. They incorporated dual props and dual louvre system and an offset driveshaft for better balance. While the DF350A is much the same engine but chipped up with more horsepower, the owner felt that 650hp was plenty and I have to agree with him. Traditionally the 8.5 is powered by a pair of 200hp outboards which give a top speed of 36 knots. To carry the weight of the larger outboards, the hull has been extended right through to the back of the boarding platform. Previously the outboards were mounted on pods. From a standing start to on the plane and beyond to max rpm, the 8.5 Fishmaster proved a very easily driven hull. Rapid and smooth acceleration right through the range. Running across the lake chop with a slightly quartering sea, the boat merely tiptoed across each wave. In tight turns, the props hang on tight, and there is no cavitation or loss of power. With

SUMMARY Image Boats Ltd is an Invercargill based company that has grown from humble beginnings in 2000 into a significant player in the alloy boat industry. Recently Image Boats have expanded their factory to copy with demand and report a very busy order book for the remainder of 2019. Manurere is a superb example of their quality and offers everything that this particular owner wanted and then some. Interestingly this is his first ever trailer boat and reckons he has cracked it right first time.

HamitonJet’s new release is perfect if you require a family styled new generation jet boat.
OME PEOPLE MAY SAY “WOW”. others may say “I’m not sure”, but I say “It’s about time!”! HamiltonJet NZ has designed and built something completely departing from tradition and that’s something worth crowing about. After two years of researching, designing and building the all new 470 Sportsman HamiltonJet NZ has finally delivered a jet boat that departs from its traditional ‘riveronly’ application and looks set to challenge the ski and lake market as well. The method of construction is the only similarity between the new HamiltonJet 470 Sportsman and other Hamilton boats and that is the fully welded aluminium hull and a G.R.P. deck. The advantages of using fibreglass for the deck is that it can be designed with more intricate flowing lines and every deck coming out of the mould is the same. In addition most of the assembly work can be done before being fitted to the hull. This 470 Sportsman is powered by a Marine Power LS3 J6.2 litre fuel injected all alloy new generation Chev V8 engine. It develops around 440 hp when coupled to the HJ212 jet unit using a 2.4kw turbo impeller. Standard features of this engine are top mounted starter motor, heat exchanger, remote oil filter and easy drain oil tube. The 4.7m x 1.5m, 16 deg deadrise hull is the same as the traditional HamiltonJet 151A, but with the new deck design the 470 Sportsman provides more interior room than its predecessor. The hull construction is the same as all the other HamitonJet models and is welded by ABS certified tradesmen. It has a keel thickness is 12mm, side bottoms 5mm , bow sections 5mm, with a stem down centre plus extra reinforcing plates on each side and 3mm sides and transom. Eight planing strakes give some extra lift to the hull plus grip on hard cornering.

ROOMY LAYOUT Seating position for the driver is nestled into a wellsupported bucket seat with all controls nicely positioned and all instruments can be easily seen. The rear bench seat caters for three adults although my concerns about the squab depth being a little narrow and not supporting your thighs, has been addressed by HamiltonJet in subsequent models. A good-sized glove box in the dash with an upwards opening lid, provides ample space for small items however a lightweight gas strut or friction ram would be a useful addition. There’s also a USB charging socket inside. The freshly designed and styled windscreen complete with opening section in centre, allows easy access in and out of the boat via the deck. A handrail borders the windscreen and has been positioned behind the screen to provide protection from the weather on those cooler days as well adding to the ‘lines’ of the windscreen. A large moulded fibreglass foredeck hatch gives good access to the under bow area where lightweight gear can be stored such as life jackets and wet weather gear etc. Further storage is available under both front seats and good sized side pockets line the inside hull walls. The interior sides are lined with marine carpet and the floors are coated with a product called ‘Hippo-Liner’ which has a non-
COLIN MCCALL is arguably the most qualified jet boat test pilot in the Australasia. He worked for HamiltonJet NZ for almost his entire career and was, up until his retirement four years ago, involved with the output of hundreds of jet boats from the Christchurch based manufacturing plant. In his retirement he now writes jet boat reviews for ‘Testing Times’, a regular column in Jet Boating New Zealand’s national rag JET. Conducting this review was carried out without fear or favour from a man who more than anyone, understands the manufacture of Hamilton Jet boats.

skid finish and is a very hard wearing product. Two separate bilge pump systems are fitted as standard, one auto / manual combined and the other manual only. A 140 litre fuel tank is mounted under the rear seat and the fuel filler is mounted directly to the tank on a raised tube. This helps reduce the likelihood of spillage via filling or an accident. We all know the 212 jet unit performs very efficiently, however I think a well designed cover over it would finish off this particular model. RIVER TEST Now to the exciting part of - the river test. Firstly the river conditions were not very kind to me as it was very dirty and on the high side after three days of heavy rain. After warming the engine up out in the main stream of the Waimakariri River and with very little throttle, the 470 Sportsman jumped up on the plane and was attained at a mere 2300rpm while a nice cruising speed could be found between 2600 and 2800 rpm. There was no real V8 burble as included in the ALLOY BOAT 2019 ISSUE #17

exhaust system are two stainless steel mufflers, which worked very well. This made the 470 Sportsman very quiet and smooth ,even at full throttle. Maximum rpm was 4,800 and that really gave me a buzz with mid-range acceleration very impressive - it really pushed me back in the seat! Seat height in relation to the new styled windscreen was great as it provided good protection from the elements while still maintaining uninterrupted vision. Hard cornering at speed was no problem. Definitely no sign of the old “Hamilton Hop” as some people called it in the older boats where the boat sometimes had a tendency to hop when cornering. In the high river flow it was hard to find many skinny channels however what I did find was I could throw this boat around at any speed and that took me back to my jet sprinting days. The trailer is steel construction and fully galvanised with the hull supported by four plastic covered steel skids (no rollers at all) which makes getting the boat on and off the trailer very easy. All the normal trailer
specifications include LED lights, jockey wheel, spare wheel and moulded mudguards with step pads front and rear are standard. The Hamilton Jet 470 Sportsman is of the usual high quality finish - an established motto of HamiltonJet for many years. All upholstery was nicely colour co-ordinated with the Hamilton flying ‘J’ logo embroidered into the seats and a fully upholstered engine box with surround gives the 470 sportsman a quality internal finish. SUMMARY HamitonJet’s new release is perfect if you require a family styled new generation jet boat suitable for the rivers with some bling and buzz you’d traditionally expect of a lake boat. If that’s what you’re after then look no further - contact HamiltonJet NZ. I know my background at HamiltonJet NZ possibly leaves me a little biased but this 470 Sportsman jet boat is certainly something HamiltonJet NZ can be proud of.
