POINT OF VIEW by Barry Thompson

SLIDERS, SOFTIES OR PILLIES?

L

iving by the beach and having my office looking not only at the sea but also my boat, it is very frustrating not being able to get out on the water during the week. While some of that I have to blame being too busy working at my computer for this magazine, there has also been the weather. For the best part of November, it seems to have been continually blowing from either the West or North, both directions that upset my fishing grounds. I launch off Manly Beach, and my fishing spots are an area from the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, out to Kawau and across to Tiri Tiri Matangi Islands. The bottom is sand or mud, and in the summer I usually drift or anchor anywhere between 1030m. In the winter, I tend to move into the rockier coastal areas around Wenderholm, Wellington Reef and Tiri. I have caught some decent snapper in the shallows, the best being in 3m of water off the reefs that hang out from each end of Manly. Right now the snapper are in and I have been missing out big time, but that is all about to change. With my next deadline not till mid-February, I have a reasonably decent summer break, and I plan to make the most of it….weather permitting. Last year I started using sliders, and while I had some success, I still prefer the good old pillies and squid. I have a few mates that come fishing with me, and they say I am ‘old school’ and should try going out with no ‘dead’ bait, just softies and sliders. I did do that a few months back with the Okuma boys, and we had fantastic success, so I certainly agree they work. In this issue, Al McGlashan tells us how we should use our lures to the best advantage, and when I read the article, I learnt quite a bit. I grew up fishing with my dad, who preferred heavy handlines, sprats for bait and fishing close in to the rocks around Tiri and Motuora Islands. I can remember his handlines were hefty grade and if the snapper dragged him into the rocks or around kelp, he just hauled it in, rocks, kelp and all. He had 60lb nylon on his stump rods and even then used to pull out the nylon onto the floor of the boat and then do the old overhead hand spin and let it fly to the right spot. Big baits and no sinkers were his style when fishing close into the rocks. Today I have gone from the handline to more sophisticated and modern gear and am happy to experiment with new style lures. Now when I am out fishing on my own, I run three rods to start; one with a slider, one with a soft bait and the other with a pillie or piece of squid. Whatever starts showing the best results is what I change to and then go back to two rods. However, if the bite is on, I then drop back to one, as I find I lose more fish running two rods when there are hits on both. Have a great Christmas and happy fishing.

HARDTOPS ON A ROLL

I

T SEEMS THAT THE ALLOY HARDTOP BUSINESS IS PUMPING IF THIS IMAGE FROM MCLAY BOATS IS ANY INDICATION. MCLAY BOATS ARE ONE OF NEW ZEALAND’S LARGEST ALLOY TRAILER BOAT MANUFACTURERS AND OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF MODELS FROM UNDER 5M OPEN TINNIES TO LARGER CABIN BOATS, CENTRE CONSOLES AND HARDTOPS TO OVER 9M. FOLLOWING A GROWING TREND THAT HAS SPREAD NATIONWIDE, THEIR SHOP FLOOR IS ALL ABOUT HARDTOPS. In fact last week when we visited, there were no fewer than ten boats in the fitout shop and they were all hardtops. These ranged from the 571 Sportsman, one of the smallest hardtops in the McLay range to the 751G2. Added to this were another fifteen in the manufacturing stage with only three not hardtops. Owner Steve McLay says that there has been a huge swing towards hardtops in recent years and that doesn’t seem to be letting up. Most of the new model releases are now hardtops and of those there is a definite swing towards larger boats.

McLay Boats are just one of at least a dozen larger alloy trailer boat builders that have busy shop floors taken up with hardtop models. The current estimate of alloy boats built in New Zealand on an annual basis is in excess of 2000 units. When it comes to boats over 6m there’s no doubt the majority would be hardtops. www.mclayboats.co.nz

TFABS 2019 PROVES POPULAR

T

FABS 2019, THE SECOND STAGING OF THE SHOW PROVED ANOTHER SUCCESS. Held at the Trustpower Arena, Bay Park, Mount Maunganui, this year’ show saw forty-six boats and fifteen PWCs in the main hall. Visitor numbers were a slight improvement on last year, up to 4213, but we were competing with the awesome weather and three days of brilliant fishing and beach conditions. Show organiser Lawrence Daly says, “We had very positive feedback from exhibitors along with requests to re-book for next year’s event”.

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

He added that it was pleasing to see the number of manufacturers present at this year’s show who were supporting their dealerships and agents. Dates are being formalised for TFABS 2020 and will be announced within the next two weeks. “This is only year two for TFABS, and there is tremendous opportunity for growth within the fishing, boating and recreational water sports world to showcase their products and services at the Tauranga Fishing and Boat Show 2020”, says Lawrence.

BOAT TEST

WHITE POINTER 970 CUSTOM CRUISER

THE PERFECT PREDATOR Built for an Australian client, Qarnita is the first White Pointer 970 Custom Cruiser powered by twin Yamaha 425 V8s and what a beast. Barry Thompson checks out not just the boat, but also the sophisticated engine package.

The ‘rough’ water of Auckland Harbour wasn’t rough enough to truly test the White Pointer 970 Custom Cruiser.

O

F ALL THE BOATS ON THE MARINA AT THE RECENT AOWBS, the White Pointer 970 Custom Cruiser, Qarnita was undoubtedly one of the star attractions. In a marina packed with big alloy boats, you needed something extra to stand out. White Pointer did that with a pair of Yamaha 425 XF V8 5.6 litre four strokes on the transom, packed with Yamaha’s proprietary Helm Master. This impressive package was the result of a collaboration between the builders, White Pointer Boats of Gisborne, Yamaha Marine and the Melbourne based client. A previous White Pointer owner, he had no hesitation in going back to Rex Briant and his team for his next boat. He wanted not only a bigger boat but also one with plenty of power, and he certainly got that with 850hp on the transom.

127

PERFECT PREDATOR

White Pointer liken their boats to the beast they’ve been named after and are created to be perfect predators. It’ all about providing a balance of style and practicality with a boat that can switch from a sedate cruiser to an aggressive fishing machine in an instant. White Pointers are manufactured in Gisborne, with the first built more than 25 years ago. Since then over 600 have been launched, and today the company offers thirteen models from 7.30m to 10.50m, in four styles. The 970 is one of seven models in the Custom Cruiser range that dates its heritage back to 2005. It was released as a more upmarket alloy boat and went away from the more no-frills boat designed for hardcore fishos. It was given “living aboard” features to make it more suitable to overnight stays and comfortable

cruising. That premise has continued for more than fourteen years, with that onboard living functionality improving with age. There are more options available, and the layouts have been tweaked every time a new model has been released. The latest 970 features some of the most innovative systems available today on a boat this size. Externally, the 970 incorporates curves and soft edges giving it a look comparable to fibreglass boats combined with the ruggedness of an alloy boat. If you still want the no-nonsense model but with some cruising aspects, then there is the Sport Hardtop (SHT) and Sports Cruiser (SC) Styling version based on the same hull. The Pro Sportsman, the most dedicated fishing design the company have developed, incorporates an easy access walkaround engine station (sterendrive options only) with no obstacles on the floor to step over or trip on when engaged in a battle with a fighting fish.

QUALITY CONSTRUCTION

The 970 Custom Cruiser, like every White Pointer, is still designed to cater for the serious fisherman who knows what they want in a boat. So right from the start of the buying process, the owner of the latest 970 Custom Cruiser had direct access to the builder, enabling personal input into his new craft. While the external styling remains unchanged from previous 970s, the layout and general equipment fit-out are all owner driven. ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

128

Rex says that one thing that never changes with the White Pointer product is the emphasis on quality construction, superior sea keeping shape and durability. The 970 Custom Cruiser delivers all that and more. Qarnita has an overall length of 9.85m, a hull length of 9.30m and a wide beam of 2.9m. For garaging the rig needs more like 12m, including the optional trailer and outboards. The reverse chine deep vee running surfaces of the hull have been upgraded from 6mm to 8mm plate, with 5mm topsides. Displacement with the twin V8 Yamaha outboards is around 6000 kgs fully fuelled and watered. Quality construction is something that has been a hallmark of White Pointer Boats and as Rex Briant says, “Fit-out and construction are the bones to longevity.” With that in mind, they ‘dry’ fit all options and accessories to the bare hull before removing them again before painting. This ensures the elimination of any contaminants and reduces the risk of electrolysis. Also, every bolted feature is sealed with Lanolin and Duralack products to combat corrosion, while all other fixtures and fittings are insulated. The company’s confidence in its build process extends to a 10-year construction warranty on all recreational hulls. The 970 Custom Cruiser, like all the White Pointer models, begins with CAD design and CUT technology before the hull skin is shaped over a pre-determined frame and girder type structure. Coupled with a unique weld sequence, the result is a rounded, compound curve hull shape that “squeezes” water out and provides an incredibly soft ride. The hulls are welded inside and out, which allows for high-quality finishing of the external welds without compromising their strength. Even the gunnel cap or buffer rail that surrounds the boat is fully welded.

FISHING FOCUS

The cockpit has been left very open as you don’t want things getting in the way fishing. Forward is a pair of bin seats with storage and freezer space. Beside the starboard seat is a pull-out shower, feed by a 12volt hot freshwater system. The seats are well-positioned under the cabin overhang so afford some shade if you need to sit a spell when the fishings slow. The cockpit sole and side coamings are covered in Marine Deck, which is soft underfoot and very durable. Should you get a load of water in the cockpit, then the boat comes with big scuppers which will drain excess water very quickly. There is soft lighting under the cockpit decks as well as a deck LED spotlight, which is perfect when fishing at night. I loved the onboard salt water hand washers either side. There is a serious bait station built into the top of the transom between the twin transom walkthroughs, both of which have built-in live bait tanks. The boarding platform had an optional cage either side with built in boarding ladders.

LIVING ABOARD

As the custom cruiser name suggests, the 970 is a boat to stay out overnight, so there are enough features to make longer overnight stays a comfortable pleasure. The cuddy has a low V berth and a rollaway starboard side bunk berth. LED lighting throughout is standard as is the deck hatch. A removable cover behind the dash allows easy access to the tidy and meticulous wiring. One look and I understood straight away what Rex meant when he talked about the fit-out been one of the bones to the longevity of White Pointer Boats. There is a dedicated rod storage system with clips for eight rods, either overhead or under the side parcel trays. Plus all available space is used for storage. There is an electric toilet under a side bunk, which is a must if you are going to call the boat a cruiser. The lockable wheelhouse has a central bi-fold door and port and starboard electric cavity sliding windows in the rear bulkhead. Forward windows are all 6mm curved toughened glass with a pair of pantograph type wipers, Custom seating with Elite bolstered seats either side with fold-up armrests, and Soft-Rider pedestals have been fitted to Qarnita. Being a semi-custom design, the seating options are your choice. The galley station behind the helm seat has a twoburner stove and sink built into the custom cabinet with a 45-litre fridge and storage drawers. Opposite is a large bench seat against the rear bulkhead and

a dinette table with a squab infill for the rise and fall rosewood dining table to make an extra berth. There are plenty of grab rails everywhere, even in the roof. Ideal if you need to hang on during a rough trip home after a day’s fishing. Roof hatches are fitted, and you have the option of a large single sliding sunroof if you want more. Our dash had a pair of Furuno TZ Touch, 12.1” MFD screens, with thru-hull 1kW to 3 kW transducers. There is also a Furuno TZT 36nm radar, Flir camera, plus a GME VHF. A Fusion MS770 provides all the music. There’s also the controls to operate the Zipwake Dynamic trim tabs, a Lewmar bow thruster and the Stressfree Maxi freefall drum winch.

HELM MASTER

What I loved about the boat was the Yamaha Helm Master, which brings a whole new dimension to how you drive the boat. In a few words, the Helm Master does a lot of the thinking for you. For example, in the Trim Assist mode, you can program trim angles to specific RPMs, setting five points throughout the full RPM range. This automates engine trim as you accelerate or decelerate. This fully integrated boat control system includes an enhanced binnacle control, a streamlined digital display, push-button start/stop switches, a remote key fob and an innovative joystick. It’s the joystick that moves the large craft in surprisingly agile ways. This makes navigating

WHITE POINTER 970 CUSTOM CRUISER crowded marinas and docking in tight slips much less intimidating. Plus if you are out somewhere deep and don›t want to anchor, then using the SetPoint mode, allows you to lock in your position automatically, so you can fish directly below the boat. Yamaha Helm Master can be installed with DEC outboards from F150 through to the XF425 with twin, triple or quad engine applications, so was the perfecct match for the dual setup. The 970 Custom Cruiser is available with single or twin outboards or a single diesel sterndrive. While the diesel sterndrive has certainly been favoured in recent years, the arrival of the big horsepower V8 outboards has certainly seen a swing back towards outboards. During trials on Auckland Harbour, I saw 51 knots @ 6000 rpm on the GPS, with a fuel burn of 288 lph. Drop that back to around 40 knots @ 4500 rpm on the fuel usage dropped to a more conservative 170 lph. Based on the 1800 litre (upgraded from 500 litres) fuel capacity that gave us a range at 4500 rpm of around 360 nm, leaving a 10% margin. However, if you are doing a lot of trolling at around 6-7 knots, the range increases to around an impressive 600nm. My time in the boat on Auckland Harbour did not do the 970 Custom Cruiser justice. It’s a boat that needs to be used in more challenging conditions to show just how good it is. It’s big, it’s heavy, and it runs on rails. The ride is faultless, and I am sure that anyone who owns a White Pointer around the size of 970 will back me up.

SUMMARY

There’s no doubt the White Pointer 970 Custom Cruiser is the Perfect Predator and anyone looking for a seriously tough, blue water capable, exceptionally well built maximum size trailered fishing machine, then you would have to go along way to find anything better than this. My only regret was I only got to review it on a calm Auckland Harbour, maybe it could be the Ranfurly Banks next time Rex.

For the new boatie or someone downsizing how do you know what size and type of small boat is best suited for you? Bruce Duncan offers some thoughts to help you take the guesswork out of it.

P

ERHAPS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS TO CONSIDER IS WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO KEEP YOUR NEW BOAT? DO YOU NEED TO MOVE THE WIFE’S CAR OUTSIDE SO YOU CAN FIT IT IN THE GARAGE OR IS THERE SPACE DOWN THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE. NO POINT IN BUYING A BOAT AND FINDING THERE IS NO ROOM FOR IT AND YOU HAVE TO PARK IT ON THE ROAD SIDE. Every boat is a trade-off to some degree, and the best way to narrow it down is to make up a wish list of what you need and want. Ideally print copies, so each boat you look at you can tick the boxes and then later you can see which boat has the most ticks.. This gives you a reality check, taking away any confusion later when trying to remember each feature of each model. We are talking about small boats, alloy boats under 5m, so while they are still really best suited inshore sheltered water boating, it pays to think about where you are mostly going to use the boat. Also what are you priorities, fishing, diving, or just family fun on the water or all of the above? The hull shapes, if we are looking at conventional monohulls under 5m, they traditionally will have a shallow deadrise, be light and because they have a shallow draft, are ideal in shallow calm water estuaries. Downside is they can be hard riding in choppy water. A moderate V hull draws slightly, but cuts through the choppy waves better and often not as stable at rest. Pontoon boats are a bit of a crossover, very stable at rest but slightly heavier. With a wide range of craft from pontoon, moderate V and flat bottom in the 3.5 to 5.0 meters the question is do you want an open boat with tiller steering, centre console or cuddy cabin with slightly more shelter? Believe me no matter which boat you decide on, there will be trade-offs The up side with small boats is you will learn more boating and fishing skills the closer your bum is to the water. Drum winches are now small enough to be fitted to boats under 5m.

GEAR STOWAGE

Believe me, from past painful experience of having fish bins, tackle boxes and even an anchor sliding around in the bottom of the boat in choppy conditions, I now make sure everything is secure. My fish bin doubles as a place to keep the tackle box and bait, plus there is a bait board with a slot for a bait knife. The fish bin now sits between a frame and is held by strong bungees in position so it cannot move. Rods and reels not only get in your way if laid down in the boat, but get a hell of a beating if laying down in the boat when underway and are easily damaged. Deck mounted rod holders need to be offset from each other so lines don’t tangle. Ideally, they should be within arm’s length so not to rock the boat when reaching over to grab one when a fish is hooked. Alternatively there are a number of adjustable portable clamp rod holders on the market that can be secured at different angles and positions around the boat. Side trays are also a good place for smaller gear and if long enough for your rods. Rod holders in the gunnels or in a dedicated overhead rod rack are ideal. However watch when you’re back on land that there is enough clearance with the rods up. Many a rod has been broken off on low hanging tree branches! If you have an open boat then quite often there will be a forward locker to stow dry gear and if you have a cuddy then there is always the space under the foredeck. If you are going to use the bow section to keep your gear, then adding a full width cargo net will stop everything slowly making its way back into the cockpit. Car keys, cellphone and other small items should always be tucked away in a locker or at leasr in a waterproof bag. Electronic key fobs and mobile phones are a bitch to use after being exposed to salt spray.

The Aqualine 495 cuddy offers plenty of protection and high coamings for safety.

SAFETY FIRST

Having fished out of small boats for many years, in fairly exposed waters, I set up a water tight box to hold a torch, flares, 2x space blankets, 2 x bottles of water, muesli bars a warm jersey and wet weather jacket. Plus I have a hand held VHF radio just in case I break down or get caught out in bad weather. With a set up like this I never leave anything behind at the house having forgotten to pack it. I shouldn’t have to mention the question of lifejackets. If you are in a small boat it really is ideal to wear them while you are aboard. Today’s inflatable jackets are so easy and comfortable to wear you hardly know you have them on. Old school kapok jackets should be tossed and replaced with new jackets before the summer.

FUNCTION WITH FORM SINCE 1992

STYLE CHOICE

When it comes to deciding a boat you have plenty of choices and styles. You need to think about where you will be fishing mostly and what size/style of boat will suit your fishing methods. There is an open design with a tiller steer, centre or side console and cuddy. Then you have the choice of 2 stroke or 4 stroke, electric or manual outboards. While tiller-steer alloy dinghies have been with us since the 1960s, it is really only in very recent years that they have seen a resurgence. In the beginning there was no choice. Aluminium boats were tiller-steer only. Something around 3-4m that suited your Seagull outboard. Centre consoles, runabouts, cabin boats and hardtops had not yet arrived on the design table, so your choice was very limited. However, it was the humble open 12 and 14 ‘footers’ that the whole aluminium boat market has grown from. During those development years the style and size of alloy boats changed and as engines grew in horsepower so did the boats in size to accommodate them. Fibreglass boats escalated at an explosive rate, however for a while the alloy market lacked traction and was seen as With the growth of the RIB, the small dinghy suffered another blow, as they lost the yacht tender market and were relegated back to a handy little boat for the kids to use at Xmas during the holidays. As outboards became more reliable, and cheaper in real terms, the tiller-steer dinghy regained its acceptance and today there’s hardly a holiday home on the coastline that hasn’t got an ‘old’ Parkercraft or Fyran sitting either under or beside the house. But fear not, the age of the alloy dinghy is back and today, with a little help from some very enterprising manufacturers, the open tiller-steer dinghy is again an important sector of the aluminium boat industry. The reason for their continual success probably has a lot to do with affordability as much as practicality. In the earlier years a dinghy was very much a 2mm-3mm thick pressed alloy hull with two or three bench seats, a short foredeck on the larger models and an open pressed floor with transverse ribs showing proud. Generally if they filled with water they sank, with some offering closed cell foam under the bench seats as the only buoyancy. Some early models were also all riveted, but today welded seams are the norm. They were basic, simple, light and easy to handle. They were designed to be given a hard time and built tough, so tough that it is not uncommon to find 30 plus year old tinnies still being used today. Frewza make a range of small open boats and cuddys, such as this F14.

If you went out today to look for a suitable 3.3m-5m open tiller-steer dinghy you might be very surprised at the options available. The engine size will be dictated by the size and design of the boat. Smaller boats obvious suit lower horsepower and a good choice is a manual 2 stroke. If you have an open boat then you can opt for a tiller steering, but with a console or cuddy you are going to have to run with a steering wheel. Depending how small and light the engine is, the tiller steer also gives you the option of taking it off when you get home and keeping it locked away for security. Bigger boats I personally have a passion for centre consoles with electric start motors, with the console providing stowage for the battery, tackle boxes, VHF and depth sounder. By mounting on both sides of the console a three-rod vertical rod holder kepts the rods from cluttering up the cockpit giving access both forward and aft of the console, which is ideal for casting poppers and soft baiting.

In a small boat, minimal seating is best as you want to maximise the fishing space and not be cluttered with seats. Moveable chilly bins are ideal as are swivelling bucket seats. Some manufacturers offer a sliding rear bench seat option which provides seating when underway and then you can move it when you need the fishing space.

BAIT BOARDS

Often the location and size of the bait board will be dictated by the number of people fishing. A transom mounted bait board is ideal if fishing on your own, but when there are several people fishing it’s an absolute pain having to ask your mate or lean over to cut bait. A fish bin with a cutting board fitted on top that can be centrally located works best for me There are also a number of different portable bait boards that clamp on the side and let you adjust the angle. My transom mounted bait boards have a large hole and drain tube that hangs over the side to keep the boat clean.

The DNA 450 is surprisingly spacious with plenty of storage options.

If you are like me and you like to use lots of berley then consider a berley pot that attaches to the transom (Hi Tech Plastics make an ideal one for small boats) if you are fishing in shallow water. These can be feed from the cockpit or you just drop in a berly bomb when you get to your fishinhg spot and leave it to do its own thing.

CAREFUL ANCHORING

Most boats in this size range are not able to have a winch fitted due to limited space for all the anchor tackle. While it is not unusual to actually not have a separate anchor locker, it can be simply fixed by having a recess in the foredeck or even a separate bin to stow all then tackle. Leaving it loose on the deck is not an option. However, with the advent of small drum winches, that tuck away into shallow lockers that is changing. It is amazing just how much rode and chain you can get on the drum. Silly as it sounds, from my experience, consideration should be given to setting and retrieving the anchor. The finer the boats bow entry is, the less buoyancy there will be, so standing in the bow to do your anchoring can be a little precarious. Always retrieve the anchor from the bow never from amidships off the side of the boat! Firstly, the boat will then be sideways [ beam on] to the wind current and waves may be placing you at great risk. There will be less stability now your body weight is more on one side, plus the strain of breaking the anchor free placing you at risk of being swamped from waves or wakes from a passing boat especially if the anchor is stuck. Lot to be said for a fully auto drum winch if you have the space to fit it.

The Stabicraft 1600 Frontier is also available in a cuddy version on the same hull.

BUCKET & CHUCK IT

All small boats to some degree are exposed to taking on spray and the odd wave. Happens a lot when launching and retrieving at a beach where a wave slops over the transom while you are waiting for your mate to come back with the trailer. There is an old saying that goes there is no better bilge pump than a “shit scared man on the end of a bucket”. Obviously a bilge pump needs electricity, so if you are a manual start motor you need a bailer or bucket. In all the small boats I have owned I carried a square bucket, as a flat sided bucket scoops up more water than a round bucket. But I also have a 2-litre milk bottle with the end cut-off at a 45-degree angle, so it can run along stringers and get into small areas the bucket can’t. When washing down the boat, every fish scale, scrap of nylon and braid ends up in the stern around the base the bilge pump. Once dry they will block the flow of water to the pump so it pays to regularly take it apart and clean it out. No matter what small boat you decide on this summer, just make sure you have all your safety gear aboard and don’t forget you are in a small boat that is designed to be used in sheltered waters. Be safe and happy boating.

A perfect set up if you are into casting lures and soft baits.

PUREKRAFT 600CC

Purekraft’s design-led approach has seen the small Tauranga company really start to stand out in what is an increasingly crowded aluminium trailer boat market. Their latest offering targets those passionate about their fishing. STORY & IMAGES BY MIKE ROSE

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

One could reasonably argue that all aluminium trailer boats are built primarily to fish. However, as aluminium hulls have relentlessly replaced those made from GRP most alloy manufacturers have adopted more of an “all purpose” approach. With their latest model, Tauranga-based Hall Marine Design has resisted that urge. Their completely new Purekraft 600CC is unashamedly a fishing boat, albeit one with a fair degree of comfort. Perhaps not surprisingly, HMD, which is run by the very passionate Jarrod Hall, adopts a very designled approach. Every single section of all of their models has been thought through in minute detail and, wherever possible, improved. This means their vessels are packed with clever, innovation features that, it is not hard to imagine, will quickly become incorporated into others’ designs, too.

The company’s new 600CC (centre console) is a completely new model which, it is planned, will become the template for a range of bigger versions in the not-too-distant future. It was also planned to be the company demonstrator. However, after being seen at a recent boat show, it was snapped up by a visitor who thought he had only gone along for “a bit of a nosy”.

With its egg-shell blue hull, white aluminium interior, black dash and baitboard and fawny SeaDek panels just about everywhere, the Purekraft 600 is certainly eye-catching. Even on a surprisingly busy mid-week afternoon at the Sulphur Point boat ramp there is hardly a boatie or

fisher who doesn’t stop for a closer look. Given that this is primarily a fishing boat and given, too, that most fishers spend lots of time around the transom, Jarrord and his team have put a lot of effort into its design. It is pretty obvious that they have focused on ensuring both that everything that needs to be is close at hand and, just as importantly, that there is little or no wasted space. Pride of place is occupied by the centrally-positioned custom bait station. It is fitted with an easily removable HDPE cutting board and contains three rod holders, two drink holders and one of HMD’s trademark bottle openers (which cleverly collects the tops for later disposal). There is also a large tackle drawer complete with a push catch to hold it closed. It is an attractive bit of kit and eminently practical although I do have one reservation: while the black HDPE board looks really classy and blends in well, it is hard not to think that a white one might work better, especially on hot summer days. On the starboard side of the transom is the step through to the platform, along with the now standard under-step live bait well. There is also a deep, dedicated trash locker in the quarter, handily placed for those cast-off bits of fishing line, depleted refreshment containers and the like. Over on port, the transom has been dedicated to dive tank stowage, with a locker both wide and deep enough to house two standard tanks. HMD uses stylish little icons to mark these innovative lockers and there is a similarly drawn fish measure on the aft ends of both coamings. The main batteries, isolating switches and fuel filter are housed in their own enclosed locker safely high up on the bait station. Along the side decks, between the panels of SeaDek, are another HMD innovation: combination rod and drink holders. There are three per side and they come complete with removable and replaceable insets. ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

The long side lockers are fitted with calf-protecting hard plastic panels and feature handy toe kicks to help those wrestling with the more substantial types of fish. A self-draining underfloor locker provides a great place to stow the catch once on board. The innovations continue out back, too. The apparently missing boarding ladder is actually recessed into the platform, protected from inadvertent opening by its own catch and clearly marked with a graphic. Compact lockers on the sides of the platform make handy use of otherwise dead space and are ideal for stowing mooring lines. propeller flag and the like.

One of the 600CC’s most striking features is its console seat module. Designed to get the skipper and a mate up high (for better visibility) it provides comfortable seating for two on deep vinyl-covered squabs of a similar hue to that of the SeaDek panels.

The 600CC’s bow is, like the rest of the vessel, covered with SeaDek anti-skid panels. There is area ideal for use as a casting platform and a shallow floor locker under this. The bow area also features recessed hand rails, more of those combination holders and access to the drum winch and its rode. This is connected to a clever retractable anchor stem that sits flush against the stem when not in use and automatically extends when the anchor is deployed. A special flat area for the MinnKota has been built into the port bow area.

The back of the seat console also provides the base for the bimini’s rear supports and the edges have been cleverly angled to accommodate more of those combination drink/rod holders. For those at the steering station there is a choice of footrests: a large SeaDekcovered one at the base of the helm console or a metal bar back under the bench seat. Rather than being a part of the deck mould, both the seat and deck modules are separate bolted-on units. This allows them to be created and completed out of the boat, improving construction efficiency and saving time. Similarly, the various screens, instruments and gauges have been placed on an inset before this was bolted onto the console. Again, this keeps this part of the operation separate and speeds up the building process. Linking the various electronics is a Humminbird Solix12 MFD which, among other things, gives total fingertip control of the MinnKota electric trolling engine on the bow. Alongside is the digital control panel for the Honda 225hp, the CZone DC panel (also linked to the Humminbird) and the controls for the Maxwell drum winch and the Lenco trim tabs. There is also a Scanstrut Rokk cellphone holder and charger, a waterproof USB charger, a Simrad VHF, a Fusion stereo and two stylish drink holders. The steering is hydraulic Ultraflex “fly-by-wire”. The inside of the console, accessed either through a hatch or by tilting the entire unit aft, houses the batteries and mechanics for the MinnKota, along with a substantial stowage area that could, if required, be used to house a toilet.

PUREKRAFT 600CC Other notable additions are the twin backward-facing Fusion speakers, linked to another pair at the rear of the bimini and the handy spring cleats on the side decks alongside the console. There is also superb Lumitec LED lighting throughout. This includes a forward facing and twin aft facing spotlights, red/ white lights above the steering station and mood lighting around the edges. The Fusion speakers, too, contain their own colour-changing LED lights, able to pulse in time to the music. The 600CC even has a dedicated bottle storage area.

on the return journey when the increasing “downhill” swell might have been expected to show up any issues with the vessel’s handling.

Having now experienced a number of Purekraft models, it came as no surprise that the 600CC performed exceptionally well in both the sheltered harbour waters and the more boisterous ones outside. At the top end of the model’s recommended horsepower range (150-225hp), the four-stroke Honda 225 gets the 600 up onto the plane in a hurry and delivers predictable power variation throughout its range. Tight turning is not a problem and neither was the steadily increasing swell outside in the Bay of Plenty. The run up to an area between Karewa and the Bowentown entrance to Tauranga Harbour was comfortable even in the somewhat confusing combination of swell and chop. Softbaiting while using the electric engine to control the drift proved remarkably easy with just a few touches on the Humminbird MFD required to deploy the motor, set the angle to the sea and the revs, and then return the motor to its horizontal position when finished. On our way up and later down the coast, we sat comfortably on around 27-29 knots while pulling around 4000-4500rpm. The ride was smooth and enjoyable and was especially impressive

HMD’s design-led approach is certainly paying big dividends. In just a few short years, they have gone from a company primarily creating kitset aluminium boats for DIYers to finish at home (and completing the odd demonstrator) to a true aluminium boat manufacturer with a range of both production and customised models. This being the third Purekraft I have had the pleasure to review, the things that really stand out and have been common to all three are the high quality of the finish and the numerous innovative design features. From a consumer’s point of view, the good news is that those clever touches just keep coming. This model has more than the previous one and the next one will no doubt have more still. For Hall Marine Design, the future not only looks assured, it also looks pretty damn exciting.

SEALEGS THE INNOVATORS

While boats with wheels have been around for a long time, it wasn’t until the early 2000s with the introduction of Sealegs that they became a commercial reality. Sealegs began as an idea on a napkin in 2001 which quickly turned into a prototype, A fibreglass inflatable with electric

wheel motors, which then evolved into a manufacturing company producing Sealegs amphibious craft using a hydraulic powerpack and drive motors. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, and founded by locals Maurice Bryham and David McKee Wright, Sealegs has been constantly pioneering the way forward for amphibious boating since the first Sealegs came off the production line in 2004. Today there are over 1400 Sealegs craft spread over

SEALEGS

more than 50 countries around the globe, and the company have dedicated offices in the United States, Australia and France, as well as a wide network of distributors and service agents. What Sealegs introduced to the boating market 16 years ago was a simple concept enabled by clever engineering and technology, using powerful motorised, steerable wheels which run off an on-board powerpack. Craft can be driven from a storage location, down a boat ramp or beach and into the water – all with the occupants remaining in the boat completely dry. Once the craft is afloat, the wheels lift out of the water to be stored against the hull, and the boat is used as normal and without compromise. When approaching land, the wheels are lowered back into position, and touch the bottom to drive the boat up onto land. Occupants can disembark up the beach or back in the boat store. This same basic Sealegs principle has been utilised by all amphibious wheeled boats regardless of the brand. Sealegs is the world’s most popular brand of amphibious boats by sales numbers alone. While for a number of years through their Amphibious Enablement System (AES) Sealegs fitted their systems to other New Zealand boat manufacturers, today (apart from custom craft over 9m) all boats with Sealegs technology are designed, manufactured, and assembled under one roof at their Auckland factory. However, both the System 70 and the System 100 are available to export markets with protectionist tariffs and other barriers to entry that prohibit the export of complete Sealegs craft. Sealegs range of boats is extensive and growing, both in the traditional RIB as well as alloy pontoon and full cabin hardtops. While the company made its mark with the 6.1m RIB, in the past few years they have expanded into larger models and are now also offering electric power options. There are five models in the recreational RIB range; 6.1m Sport RIB, 7.1 Sport RIB, 7.7 Sport RIB, 9m Hydrasol RIB and the ultra-stylish 7.5m Electrasol (Electric Drive) RIB. Added to that are two aluminium pontoon boats, the 7.7m Sport D-Tube and the 8.5m Alloy Cabin.

Power to run the system is provided by a 97hp Kubota diesel engine. Ultilised by both commercial and recreational customers, the most impressive being Eco-Tourism Operator Pennicott Wilderness Journeys in Australia, who operate three 12.5m Naiad vessels using the Sealegs System Both systems come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD), power steering and automatic braking system (ABS). The ABS system requires hydraulic pressure to release, meaning that when the craft inboard engine is turned off, or if there is a failure in the hydraulic system, the brakes will lock. Original Sealegs craft could run on land for 10 minutes within every hour without overheating the oil in the inboard engine. Now with Sealegs extended run time technology added an oil cooling, allows the craft to run for at least 30 minutes within every hour without overheating. In 2018 Sealegs debuted their fourth generation electric concept craft, E4, which combined the latest advances in lithium battery and brushless electric hub motor technology. Their production version of their electric system will be delivered to customers in 2020. The high density 7kWh lithium battery delivers up to 20 return launch and retrieve journeys on land between charges. Charging is via a built-in mains charger as well as via regenerative braking. Mechanical brakes are integrated into the hub motors. Sealegs remain the largest manufacturer of amphibious systems and according to a Sealegs spokesman, design, manufacturer and assembly around 100 Sealegs per year at the that facility in Albany on Auckland’s North Shore.

TECHNOLOGY

Sealegs offer two different size systems, System 70 is designed for vessels with a maximum gross weight of up to 3000kg, uses 660mm tyres, and is powered by a Briggs & Stratton 35hp petrol engine. With the System 70 you have up to 10 kph land speed. The System 100 is based on 950mm wheels and is capable of handling up to 10,000kg gross weight depending on operating conditions, with a land speed of 9 kph.

TECTRAX

Kiwi alloy boat builders, such as Profile are using the Textrac system.

TECTRAX - ALL ELECTRIC When Taupo based Rob Gower made the jump from building his own personal 3 wheeled amphibious craft to wanting to enter the entered the amphibious boat market, he wanted to offer something technically different from the existing amphibious boats available systems and something that solved some of the shortfalls of traditional systems, while still working with the same and functionally necessary three-legged wheel principle. To achieve this, he went for an electric amphibious solution and also decided only to build systems and not boats. With so many great hulls available in New Zealand, the focus needed to be on system development and innovation rather than on hull design and build. In 2004, after testing some of his initial theories in his garage, Rob connected with a talented local engineer, and together they started working on an amphibious boat. After a number of modifications and refinements, Rob protected his ingenious ideas, took out patents and then in 2015, created a new and revolutionary electric amphibious system. Since the introduction of the Tectrax electric amphibious system in 2017, at least six Kiwi aluminium boat manufacturers have chosen to fit them to their boats five of which will be available before this Christmas.

The electric motors are very powerful with high speed turned into high torque via a reduction gearbox. The T2500 delivers 10.8kW through to the T4000 which offers 21.60kW of power. You will need a single 72 bolt battery to run the T2500 and T3000 systems, with two for the T3500 and T4000. It’s surprising how many launch and retrieves you can do with the standard set-up but if you do want a bigger “tank”, an additional battery can be added by Tectrax. You can also charge the system using a generator if you’re out of reach of a standard 240v/10amp socket. A standard generator that outputs 240V/50hertz/10amp is perfect. This size will charge each battery in 2 hours. Under 2.5KW will charge, but the charging time will be increased, and generator specifications need to be checked carefully to ensure the draw doesn’t damage the genset. Should you run the battery flat, the internal battery management system will protect the batteries and not allow them to be damaged. An easy to understand display will keep you fully informed on battery levels however. Tectrax also have more innovation coming next year in relation to charging options so watch this space. Unlike a traditional battery that slowly runs flat, Lithium Iron will stop v’s running down. Whilst the system is electrically braked, each rear motor also has an integrated disc brake for safety and all motors also have regenerative braking (re-charging the batteries) and all AWD along with traction control. Through a combination of chemical and mechanical seals along with design, the motors have an IP69 waterproof rating (total submersion). Whilst the Tectrax wheels are deployed using hydraulics, the hydraulic system works off electrically driven pumps so there is no need for an additional motor on the deck. The drive units are designed in New Zealand, with components made in New Zealand and overseas, and after assembly the quality control is done locally before release.

TECHNOLOGY

Being 100% electric, Tectrax systems does not need an annual maintenance check. The first check is two years after purchase and is can be done by a boat dealer or by Tectrax. The T2500 and T3000 systems have an expected run time of 35 minutes, assuming 30% soft sand or uphill and 40 minutes for the T3500 and T4000 systems. On flat asphalt, drive time is approximately 1hr and 5 minutes. Adding the When you add a Tectrax system to the boat you are looking at a further 580 kg for the (T2500 & T3000) and 602 kg for the (T3500 & T4000) systems.

ORION

The first to use the new Orion system was Smuggler with their Strata range of RIBs.

ORION – PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Orion Marine was established in 2012 with the intention of offering amphibious systems to established boat manufacturers. Orion Marine are currently running at production capacity manufacturing four systems per month with a full order book until June 2020. By June 2020 they plan to double that to eight systems per month. Orion’s Darren Leybourne says the demand for their systems is being driven from both international and domestic craft manufacturers. “We are working with a number of global craft manufactures to provide amphibious options of their current models. The US market is looking especially exciting as we have enquires from multiple well know manufactures in the US”. He added that after sales support is a key focus for the company, and have established a global service platform to ensure the end user has full confidence in purchasing a craft equipped with one of their systems.

versions, and like the S65 has full time all wheel drive and ABS braking. All alloy parts are hard anodised and the synthetic hydraulic hoses are corrosion proof. The S25 uses a 40hp petrol engine for power, while the S65 will have a 75hp petrol engine. At 420kg, the three wheel drive S25 is the lightest amphibious system on the market The S65 will be offered as a six wheel system with three legs with dual wheels, making it very different from anything else on the market. Orion Marine provide a 3-year warranty and from 2020 this will become a 3+3 warranty. This is a 3-year full warranty followed by an additional 3-year warranty on the hydraulic drive system totaling 6 years for the hydraulic drive system. In 2020 Orion systems will be fully telematics enabled. This means the ability to offer remote service support anywhere there is mobile phone coverage. Having telematics will also enable the company to provide free over the air software updates. In Sept 2020 Orion Marine will be releasing a concept self-drive system which will be targeted at the first responder market. Additionally in 2020, we will be releasing an amphibious system that uses a single engine for both on water and on land power. Currently there is a prototype of this being tested.

TECHNOLOGY

There are two systems, which are the S25 for craft with a GVM of 2500kgs and the S65 for craft with a GVM of 6500kgs. Currently S25 is the only system in full production with the first S65 to be installed onto a Smuggler 11m RIB in Feb 2020. The S25 is available in both three wheel and four wheel

BOAT TEST

SENATOR RH 690

GOING OUT WIDE The RH 690 is the third Senator for this very serious fisherman.

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

160

BEING A THIRD-TIME OWNER OF A SENATOR BOAT, BLAKE MASEFIELD KNEW PRECISELY WHAT HE WANTED WHEN ORDERING HIS NEW RH 690 AND AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS ON THE WATER RECKONS HE’S GOT A NEAR-PERFECT BOAT. TEXT BY BARRY THOMPSON

A single Yamaha 250 is good for 40 knots.

aving previously owned two Senators; an RC 540 and RH 620, he didn’t have to be sold on the ride and handling or the fitout and finish. “I love their boats, and they have never let me down, so I couldn’t see any reason to swap to another brand”, says Blake. The main reason for the change was he needed something bigger, that offered more space for fishing and was more overnight friendly. “We did everything we could in the 620, and then some, but I always found I needed more workable areas, as we started to get more adventurous with our fishing”. That includes game fish both on the west and east coasts, so the boat still needed to be trailerable and easily towable. Some of us consider a 45-minute trip from the boat ramp to the 40m mark in the Hauraki Gulf a big trip. However, for Blake and his mates, that’s more a 2-hour pre-dawn run to 20 miles behind Great Barrier chasing bluenose and hapuka or trolling lures for big game. When you’re heading out ‘extra-wide’, then you not only need a boat capable of handling whatever the sea throws at you but one that you can do in relative comfort, while still considering you are in a 7m boat.

The RH 690 is built to take the tough stuff, with a 6mm hull, 3mm pontoons and a 4mm treadplate floor. Senator has a reputation for the quality of their hull construction, which sees the RH 690 built to survey standards and comes with a 5-year hull warranty. Under the sole and in the pontoons it’s all reserve buoyancy, with all sealed separate buoyancy chambers pressure tested. Technically the RH 690 fully flooded will not sink, but I was not about to test the maths.

H

MORE SPACE While the RH 690 is a certainly a bigger boat than the RH 620 – 7.13m overall compared to 6.75m overall - it was more about the space internally that was important. Compared to the RH 620, the RH 690 offers more beam and a marginally larger cockpit, which is what Blake was after for fishing. Having a generous size footprint to run himself and a few mates while fishing deep for Hapuka or in the shallows for snapper and kinghies, was a consideration when changing to the larger model. While the RH 620 has a total of 4.50 sqm cockpit space, the RH 690 is 2% bigger with 4.60 sqm. The internal beam of the RH 620 is 1.86m and the RH 690 a little more at 1.99m. External beam increases in the RH 690 to 2.49m from the RH

620s, 2.38m. Now that may not all sound like much of a gain, but when you are fishing four guys every little bit helps. Coaming heights are also increased with the 690/770 at 800mm, while the 620/650 is 750mm and they are high enough to allow for twotier storage racks, which is wide enough for dive bottle storage and long enough for 2m rods. The cockpit features extra-wide flat coamings and a port side walk-through to the boarding platform with two-step drop-down alloy dive ladder. There is a live bait tank built under the recess with the customary viewing window and to starboard custom tuna tubes. The large boat station in the centre of the transom comes with a tackle drawer and four rod holders. While the cockpit is not self-draining, there is a deep sump with a bilge pump to expel any water that comes aboard. With no seating to get in the way, you can fish all corners of the cockpit without interference. Blake’s RH 690 is the open version (i.e.no rear bulkhead) with the double king/queen seats dividing the open cockpit from the forward helm area. fridge/freezer and galley modules. Being an alloy boat, it’s all a matter of choice. Speaking of choice, you do have the option of a spacious lockup forward and main cabins by extending the cabin roof back for more internal space or keep it forward, such as in our test boat to maximise the cockpit area. Senator also offer a shorter bunk, longer deck option [200mm] in most of their larger boats, for those more focussed on day trips rather than overnighting. I found the twin swivelling bucket seats well placed to drive when seated and made good use of the footrest. The seat base slides back out of the way if you want to drive standing. Rooftop handrails were also a nice touch. The sliding side windows provide clean airflow, and there is loads of storage space for all the nick-nacks you take out on a trip.

SERIOUSLY SIMRAD When Blake decided to build the new boat, he also wanted a seriously good electronics package and one that would give him the clarity and functionality for deep water fishing. He chose a Simrad NSS12 evo3 with broadband 4G radar, and a Simrad DrivePilot. This high-definition 12-inch display delivers a big-picture view of charts, radar, sonar, and more. You can switch seamlessly between the touchscreen and the keypad controls. The Broadband 4G radar has a range of up to 36nm, so trips in the dark are made a lot safer. Low power consumption, zero radiation hazard, and a compact dome with no external moving parts make this radar system ideal for vessels like the RH 690. Plus, not only can Blake log in and plan those big trips to the back of Great Barrier Island, but they can be supported with automatic routing and let the WWW.POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

Power options are twin or single outboards and single sterndrive.

An infill turns the cabin into a substantial double berth.

Looks a bit clean, but that’s certain to change.

Simrad DrivePilot do its thing. Certainly makes the journey a lot more relaxing. At around 30 knots the NSS12 evo3 was still clear and distinguishable. You could see the fish targets clearly and the bottom contour. With wireless connectivity and HDMI, Blake can even mirror the display to his smartphone or tablet. If he had a TV on board, he could also connect to that as well. Being a fisherman, it was also crucial that the echosounder delivered the best possible information through the sonar transducer. This includes StructureScan HD imaging which provides picture-like views of fish holding structure, while ForwardScan sonar offers a clear view of the bottom ahead. CHIRP-enabled sonar provides reliable bottom-tracking and fish-finding performance, including support for dual-channel CHIRP transducers to deliver coverage of multiple depth ranges. You also have the option of utilising dual transducers, which lets you connect multiple transducers to a single display. I noticed that I was able to view the screen very clearly in bright light, even wearing polarised sunglasses. Being a touch screen, it was easy to monitor and control all of the on-board electronics with simple menus and customisable split-screen layouts. There is also a built-in keypad with a rotary control dial. Interestingly Blake installed the NSS evo3 himself and said it was a reasonably straight forward job. Alongside the NSS evo 3 screen was the display for the Simrad autopilot which links into the outboards hydraulic-steering. This includes the DrivePilot pack, which is rated for boats below 9m and integrates seamlessly with Simrad multifunction displays. It is a breeze to operate in both simple and complex

manoeuvers. What makes the DrivePilot so handy for serious fisherman like Blake, is its ability to offer automatic depth contour tracking. Perfect for fishing ledges or drop-offs, and also a great way to cruise along the coastline while automatically maintaining a safe depth beneath your boat.

OVERNIGHT STAYS However, it was the need for a more creature comforts when staying overnight, that also attracted him to the RH 690. Okay, so it’s not a big weekender, but there is enough space for Blake and a couple of mates to stay overnight. The forward cabin has two large berths with an infill, a plumbed-in head and storage under the squabs. While two people can sleep in here, a blow-up mattress and sleeping bag will look after a third person in the cockpit. A canvas canopy with side curtains would be a great addition. Cooking, if it is required, could be handled with a Magma rod mounted BBQ and there is plenty of options for freshwater storage and a handheld shower. A Maxwell capstan winch handles anchoring chores, but I would have chosen a drum winch as they hold a lot more rode and the anchor locker on the RH 690 is big enough to mount one.

Tuna tubes were one of the few options added.

Blake chose a Simrad NSS12 evo3 with broadband 4G radar, and a Simrad DrivePilot.

Power options for the RH 690 are single or twin outboards and single stern drives. When I ran the RH 690 for the review, we had some reasonably choppy water and about 20 knots of breeze. Like all hardtops of this size, a little tab was required to keep everything on the level. The 18 deg deadrise hull handled the water fine, and although we did take some spray over the deck, the single wiper quickly cleared the tinted safety glass screen. I would like to have seen two wipers as in heavy rain you often tend to lose sight of what’s coming from your port side. Top speed was 39.5 knots @ 6000 rpm, using a 15” Saltwater Series propeller. Using at 17” Saltwater Series we did manage to increase the speed to 42 knots and maintained a similar fuel consumption. The Yamaha 250 packs plenty of punch and

TROLLING TRICKS ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

Few angling techniques are as easy or as effective as trolling – and with a few handy tips, you’ll soon be catching anything from kahawai to marlin. BY AL MCGLASHAN

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

TROLLING TRICKS The great thing about trolling is that you can do it anywhere for just about any species. You can troll up a creek for natives, or miles offshore for tuna – in fact, just about every predatory fish will eat a lure. Over the years, I have caught a wide variety by trolling – from trout to flathead and kingfish to marlin, as well as some oddities like blackfish. It really is a universally popular technique. Despite the wide variations in species and locations, the basics of trolling are very similar across the board, and mastering these techniques is instrumental to success. Trolling allows you to cover a lot of ground effectively – a big bonus when fishing. It’s the age-old fishing rule: the more fish you get your offering in front of, the more you will catch. It’s a numbers game, but you can put the luck in your corner if your lures are in the strike zone. It doesn’t matter how good your lures are or how expensive your boat is, if you aren’t fishing where the fish are, you won’t catch anything. That’s the golden rule of fishing – fish where the fish are. Sure, trolling allows you to cover substantially more ground, but you still need to be smart about it and focus on a specific area to maximise your return. Some anglers see trolling as a lazy man’s style of fishing … just throw a few lures out the back and cruise around the ocean. However, getting your lures in front of the fish is actually highly technical.

A classic example is the Great Barrier Reef’s outside edge, especially the ribbon reefs. With drop offs stretching hundreds of miles, it’s too much ground to troll – instead, find any little aberration deflecting the current, like a point or bommie. That’s where you want to start. The beauty of trolling is that you’re covering ground searching for potential fish-holding locations. Use your eyes, sounder and plotter to find them. tep two is selecting the right lures for the job. While you could use natural bait, for the purpose of this article I’m focusing on lures. Why? Because you don’t have to get your hands dirty. Your target species will dictate which lures you use. While this may sound logical, you’d be surprised how many anglers simply chuck anything out the back and hope for the best … trolling is a science, and a bit of thought needs to be put into it.

IN THE STRIKE ZONE

neverending lures

First and foremost, it’s important to understand the target species and where they like to reside. If you’re chasing Spanish mackerel, it’s all about reef drop-offs and bait concentrations, while big flathead in the estuary will see you targeting the channel’s edges and gravel beds. The most obvious place to troll is around structure, but not all structure is equal – concentrate your efforts around specific parts of it, such as the up-current side of a bommie or the deep side of a point. Having a basic understanding of currents and their impact is also important, as they play a vital role when determining where the fish will be. This is just as important in a river as it is offshore. It’s a common misconception that fish hide behind a structure, out of the current. It’s often quite the opposite, though, with the fish often sitting in the current. The current pushes into the structure and creates an upwelling in front of it. Fish, especially pelagics, ride this pressure wave, exerting minimal energy while being in a prime position to attack prey that comes within striking range. This rule applies around the country, from GTs up north to kingfish down south. The golden rule here is: if there’s no run, there’s no fun. You can narrow down the search area even further by looking for irregularities along the face of the structure. Look for spots where the reef juts out, like a point, isolated bommies, or anything that disrupts the current.

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

The choice of lures is unlimited. I’d even go as far as to say there are too many on the market these days, making it more confusing than easy. Walk into any Compleat Angler and you’ll find racks upon racks of lures on offer – which can be confusing, so don’t hesitate to ask the guys in-store for advice. As a really basic guide, if you’re chasing pelagics, you’ll want to run a shallow- to medium-deep-diving lure. A tight shimmering action will allow you to troll at high speed, making it perfect for pelagics. On the other hand, if you want to target demersal species, you’ll need deep, or even mega-deep divers that get you down near the bottom. They can’t be trolled as fast as the tighter-running shallow versions, but they’ll hold deeper in the water column right in the strike zone for the likes of mangrove jacks or snapper. The beauty of trolling is you can always mix it up with a spread that covers all options – running a selection of mega-deep divers, medium-running lures and surface lures puts you in with a chance at just about anything. However, select a spread that is compatible. A lot of cheap deep-diving lures only work at very slow speeds, which is often too slow for shallow-running lures or poppers. My advice is always spend the bucks on decent lures, like Aussie-built Halcos, which have hand-tuned deep divers that can be run at speeds to match the surface lures.

168

Match the hatch’ as they say... the Halco Roosta in ‘king brown’ works a treat when yakkas are on the menu.

Setting the scene

“Trolling is a science, and a bit of thought needs to be put into it”

The first lure, which is run in tight, is a mega-deep diver, such as the Scorpion Crazy Deep. This lure quickly dives down to its running depth and can be towed on a relatively short leash. It is prime for species like big flathead, Murray cod, and barra, as well as coastal species like coral trout and even tuna. Being close to the boat is important when chasing structureoriented species that need to be wrestled away from the reef. In most cases, I set this lure just 20m back. When fishing right in tight against the ledges, especially coral reefs, I run it on the outside, away from the reef edge, to minimise the chances of snagging as well as being destroyed by a fish. Behind the deep diver, some 25 to 30m back, is where I like to run the shallow/medium diver, which could be anything from a Laser Pro to a Trembler. My favourite colours for pelagics are

When setting up a general trolling spread to cover all bases, select lures that cover as much of the water column as possible. A basic spread can be used just about anywhere – headlands, estuaries, freshwater, reefs up north or down south, you name it. Obviously, in the context of this feature, the examples are very general, so fine-tune it to suit your local waters. A spread consists of just three lures: a mega-deep diver, a medium runner, and a shallow or surface lure. This is a really basic layout so, depending on what you’re targeting, it can be swapped, chopped and changed. If you’re trout fishing in a lake, then smaller minnow patterns are best, while if it’s barra up north, deeper divers will dominate.

TROLLING TRICKS cheap lures come with cheap hooks. Even decent lures, like Halcos, need to be beefed up at times. When chasing the likes of black bass in Papua New Guinea, you’ll need the toughest hooks, such as from VMC. The same goes for chasing big tuna … although, most anglers actually swap to singles in this case, as single hooks are much stronger and offer a cleaner hook-up. Not all lures run as well on singles, though, so you may need to do some experimenting. If you do use the trebles, push the barbs down – this will give you a better hook-up rate and make it a lot less dangerous when you land the fish. It’s also much better for the fish when releasing them.

metallic silver and purple. If you run this lure at the same time as a mega-deep diver, do so in the opposite corner to minimise tangles. The final position sits above the mega-deep diver or down the centre. If I am fishing an area with lots of pelagics, then the trusty old Roosta is just as deadly.

MORE Trolling tricks To ensure the lures are running at their optimum, use a loop knot or coast snap lock. Always run the lure beside the boat to ensure it is swimming smoothly. If the lure is still pulling to the side, try bending the towing eye the opposite way. Upgrading the hooks is highly recommended, as many

TO WIRE OR NOT TO WIRE In the old days, I used to run multi-strand wire, especially in the tropics. These days, though, I find I’m refining my techniques to ensure I keep getting results and wire is rarely used. The only reason we use wire is to avoid bite-offs but, in most cases, the lure is in the fish’s mouth, so their teeth can’t even reach the leader. At Trolling a popper right back is always a winner.

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

Always select a lure that gets you in the zone – in the case of snapper, that means close to the bottom.

the end of the day, I get more bite on mono, so it’s often worth the risk. Obviously, the exception to the rule is the razor gang, like wahoo and mackerel. If you need to use wire, then run a short length of singlestrand wire. Linked to the wind-on via a small heavy-duty swivel, it only needs to be 20cm long. Join the wire to the lure with a haywire twist, which still allows the lure to run properly. Head for deeper water When you’re fishing in tight against structure and you connect to a decent fish, you need to act fast and pull away from the edge. This is particularly so for dirty fighters like kingfish, GTs and those dreaded PNG black bass who love to smash you up in the reef. Plan ahead so everyone knows what is happening – the moment you hook up, you need to put things into motion and head for open water. There is no need to power away, though, just head away from the structure at a steady pace. Do it right and this manoeuvre will give the angler a good angle on the line, while leading the fish out of the danger zone. Most fish are initially confused after the strike and can’t work out why their lunch is suddenly leading them out to sea. In most cases, they will allow themselves to be towed for a short while before waking up to the game – exploiting this will give you the edge. Lure trolling is a great way to catch fish and is one of the best ways to get the family involved – while you do all the hard work of finding the hot spots, everyone else can have fun holding the rods and catching the fish. I know my kids love it, because all they have to do is wind the fish up!

EXTREME 885 GAME KING

BIGGER IS

BETTER

After recently reviewing the 7.5m Extreme 745 Game King for this magazine, Barry Thompson checks out the larger, 8.85m, 885 Game King, and found a boat that makes the best use of the extra space. ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

T

HEY say size matters and when it comes to boats that is so often true. So, is a 7.5m hardtop that much different from an 8.85m hardtop of an almost identical style from the same manufacturer? I had a chance to find out when I went to Whakatane, to run two boats side by side; an Extreme 745 Game King and an Extreme 885 Game King. Extreme is unquestionably one of the leading brands in New Zealand, with more than 300 boats built annually. The 745 Game King is one of eight models that are included in the Game King range, starting with the 6.07m, (605 Game King), through to the 11.85m, (1185 Game King). No matter what the size they all share the same DNA and design philosophy to provide an exceptional deep-water fishing machine, that still retains the versatility to be enjoyed as a family boat. Hard-out fishing platform or weekend cruiser, the Game King range ticks all the boxes. As in all models in the Extreme Boat’s range, the 885 Game King is based on a fine entry hull, high chines with full shoulders and a wide beam for excellent seahandling and stability.

At 2.82m, the 885 Game King carries 33mm (1.3”) more beam than the 745 Game King and is 1.42m (4.65”) longer overall. With that extra volume, there is a lot more scope for layout innovations and the 885 Game King has plenty. Extreme build their boats tough so that you can endure severe sea conditions with a feeling of security and safety. The hull plate has been increased to 6mm, with 4mm sides and decks. If that’s not enough for you, then there is an option for an 8mm hull, but quite frankly you don’t need it. Extreme use the highest grade alloy and all structures are welded with an under deck subframe that stiffens and binds the hull into one very tight structure. All the buoyancy areas and fuel tanks are pressurised and certified, and aluminium sheet certification can be verified. Such is the external finish that when the hulls are fully painted it is hardly possible to tell if it is alloy or fibreglass and many a boat show the hulls get the old ‘tap test’ to prove they are actually built in alloy. As the Extreme website says, “The finish is that good”! I certainly can’t argue with that.

The 885 Game King proves that size does matter.

EXTREME 885 GAME KING

Two 200hp Yamaha V6 outboards returned a top speed of close to 40 knots.

As this is a boat destined for fishing, it is only natural that the cockpit is set up for the task

A Minn Kota trolling motor fits on the foredeck.

CUSTOM LAYOUT

The most apparent difference between the 745 Game King and the 885 Game King is the amount of area available both in the cockpit and the wheelhouse. With the 885 Game King, you have the option of a fully enclosed wheelhouse, or you can leave the back completely open. With the enclosed arrangement there are a number of custom options, such as having a separate port side head, a starboard side sink, rear dropdown window and central door to the wheelhouse. If you value your cockpit space, then you can leave all that out and retain the central door with dropdowns either side. I like the separate head as this a real must I feel if you are going to use the boat for family cruising. Also having the ability to enclose the wheelhouse gives you a warm cosy area in the colder climates, which can be boosted with the addition of a small heater. Roof hatches and sliding side and rear windows provide plenty of ventilation.

ALLOY BOAT 2020 ISSUE #19

As this is a boat destined for fishing, it is only natural that the cockpit is set up for the task. Across the transom, there is a central bait station with optional tackle drawers under a large cutting board, a live bait tank and a single (twin option) transom walk-through. An optional cage around the aft platforms allows you to carry your fishing experience right to the extreme edges of the boat. Rod storage is in wide side trays or overhead, and there is plenty of wet locker space in the sole for dive gear. Inside the wheelhouse, there are again a variety of custom modules available. As on our test boat, a dinette and convertible berth to port and galley opposite behind the helm is the most popular. It’s a practical layout that works, giving extra accommodation, plenty of storage and a galley, with a fridge/cooker combo. If you do choose to have no wheelhouse wall, a popular option is curved seating with the ability to accommodate a cooker, fridge and storage drawers. One area that remains virtually unchanged between boats is the dash. It is set at the right angle to easily read the MFD, which in our case was a 16” Raymarine Hybrid touch. You can fit a couple of 12” screens, and there is still plenty of real estate for all the extras you need such as gauges, switches, autopilot and VHF.

The driving position, both seated and standing, was at the right height for me, with clear visibility through the toughened glass screen. A suspension seat is also available. Following along the cruising theme, the 885 Game King has an extra-large berth forward, made up of twin side squabs and an infill. If there was no wheelhouse wall and separate toilet, you could fit a head forward under the cabin squabs. Double racks either side look after a lot of storage, and the full cabin fabric lining means there is no indication anywhere that this is an alloy boat. There is a pipe berth option which when not used as a bunk, is a great gear shelf. You can also have a curtain to add some privacy to the forward cabin.

It’s a practical layout that works with a compact galley.

AWESOME PERFORMANCE

Inside the wheelhouse, there are a variety of custom modules available.

The driving position provides clear visibility through the toughened glass screen.

You have the option of single or twin outboards or a single diesel sterndrive, 200hp – 450hp with the majority being sold with a single outboard. For our review, we had two 200hp Yamaha V6 outboards which returned a top speed of close to 40 knots. Running the boat in the light to moderate sea state off Whakatane didn’t do the boat justice, and I would have liked to gone out wider. The active volcanic White Island is about 26nm offshore, so a run out and back would have been a great test. Maybe next time. The twin Yamaha 200s pack enough punch for the 3000 kg (approx.) 885 Game King to make it a slippery boat through the water. The boat planes easily and without much throttle and has a real sweet cruise around 25.5 knots @ 4000 rpm. Fuel consumption showed at 53.5 lph, and we had a range of 190nm. The deep-vee hull and wide chines dissipate the water and provided a soft, smooth ride in the choppy water. Like all big hardtops when you have wind and tide and wave patterns all mixing together around the boat trim tabs proved ideal to maintain a level attitude. The flooding keel does a great job in keeping the boat extremely stable at rest, and the water is expelled just about as quick as it takes to get onto the plane.

AWARD WINNER

Extreme Boats have won so many Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show awards, they need a separate room at their Whakatane factory to hold all the trophies. Considering how hard it is not only to be a finalist but to actually win an award, that is a massive credit to owners Glenn and Diane Shaw and the staff of this Kiwi builder. The 885 Game King was released a few years ago and over the years has undergone a number of tweaks and changes internally to make it even better. Externally the only difference is the sheerline has been raised since the earlier models. If the you thought the 745 Game King, was a great boat, then you are going to be overwhelmed when they get to experience the 885 Game King. Simply a boat that proves that size does matter.

Make no mistake, the demand for extreme offshore adventure is growing, and a new generation of bigger boats are being built fit for this purpose. Boats of this size need serious horsepower and grunt. That’s where Yamaha’s 425HP, 5.6L V8 XTO comes into its own. Ideally matched to pushing big loads, the 425 XTO produces its maximum torque of 546N-m at 4200rpm. Swinging a 19-inch XTO stainless steel propeller and combined with our ‘steer-by-wire’ integrated electric steering for laser sharp manoeuvres, you know you’re in control with the Yamaha XTO. Today’s growing demand for feature rich on-board systems, from navigation to lighting and audio, also means a greater demand on an engine’s electrical system. Yamaha’s XTO has got it covered with a high output alternator, generating up to 90 Amps of electrical power, and 55 Amps at idle. Yamaha has built an enviable reputation for building highly reliable, technology driven, big horsepower engines and the new V8 XTO Offshore is no different. Yamaha 425 V8 XTO – take it to the extreme.

EXTREME

The all new Yamaha XTO Offshore outboard is one beast of an engine, designed to deliver maximum power and thrust. The result of years of collaboration with top boat designers, the XTO has been built from the ground up to provide the ultimate in power and efficiency offshore. In fact, there’s nothing ordinary about this engine: It’s our most technologically advanced ever. This 425HP, 5.6L V8 introduces an industry first fully integrated electric steering system, the highest compression ratio on the water and engineering touches like iridium spark plugs and quad thermostats. It’s purpose-built for extreme power, durability, control and reliability. The XTO is another testimony to Yamaha’s enviable reputation for innovation and building big horsepower engines in a class of their own. yamaha-motor.co.nz
