e have the Sealegs, Orion and Tectrax amphibious systems on various boats in New Zealand and worldwide, but there is nothing like the Pagurus. Italian design studio, Lazzarini has taken the concept a whole leap or perhaps giant stride further with their ambitious concept 25m mini-superyacht. 6

|

MARCH / APRIL 2021

|

Pagurus—Latin for crab—is a catamaran with four, 6.4m-long steel cylinders, each featuring a helical spiral flange that looks like the thread of some giant screw – two in each hull. Pull up to a beach and, at the touch of a button, all four cylinders drop down out of the hulls. With each powered by their own 440 hp diesel engine, the screws turn, biting into the sand, dragging the catamaran on to land.

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

This superyacht has treads that let it leave the water and crawl on to the shore. Lazzarini’s original idea was for a military version of the catamaran. But seeing a considerable uptake in luxury yacht buyers looking to “go off the grid” the designer felt there was a new market in the recreational sector. Just so you have the matching toys for your ultra-extreme vessel, the plan is to house “a couple of electric Tesla

Cyberquad ATVs, or snowmobiles and a Tesla Cybertruck between the hulls. Pagurus would be powered with a pair of 900 hp Caterpillar diesels coupled to sterndrives, giving a top speed of 25 knots. An abundance of solar panels would be used to help power up all the on board and vehicle electrics. Those underwater helical screws could turn under silent electric power to push the yacht at a stealthy five knots.

This superyacht has treads that let it leave the water and crawl on to the shore. Besides its multi-terrain capabilities, Pagurus is a modern mini-explorer design, with features like solar panels to provide energy. Courtesy Lazzarini Design Studi Lazzarini says his inspiration came from a giant crab from which the yacht gets its name. You see it in the high-sided hulls and low, low carbon fibre superstructure with its distinctive,

slim semicircle of glass. Echoing a crab’s hard shell, Pagurus’s steel hull would be up to an inch thick with extra reinforcement around the bow for safe and effective ice-crushing. The Pagurus concept could be turned into reality for around $30 million. Check out the video: https://youtu.be/vDbiBgeAi78

ARITIME NZ RECENTLY RELEASED SOME INTERESTING STATISTICS AND WARNED KIWIS ABOUT BEING TOO COMPLACENT DURING THE CURRENT COVID-19 SITUATION. A Maritime NZ spokesman says that with people travelling within New Zealand due to COVID there is a heightened risk that more people will be going boating possibly for the first time so are unprepared or inexperienced. This is supported by marine industry data which shows boat sales are up in a big way because people can’t travel overseas. Also, there has been a 30% rise in people boating in Australia, probably mostly because of COVID-19. COVID-19 is likely to be reinforcing the trend seen in recreational boating survey data that more people than ever are participating and increasing diversity. Maritime NZ’s annual survey of recreational boaties, conducted by research firm Ipsos, shows that approximately 1.7 million Kiwis are involved in recreational boating and using an increasingly diverse array of watercraft. That’s around one in every two Kiwis (45% of all New Zealanders) - the first increase in four years. The survey shows that paddling now has the highest level of participation in NZ’s waters. Powerboating is the second most popular activity, and safety continues to be a concern with those in boats under 6m. The survey shows that while most boaties (84%) rate safety as important, there is still work to ensure everyone keeps themselves safe. Around 20% still report that they wear a lifejacket either never, not very often, or only some of the time and one in four reports that they never, not very

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

often, or only some of the time check the marine or mountain forecast before going out on the water. Provisional statistics* show 14 people have died in recreational boating accidents in New Zealand waters in the year to date (as at Dec 8 2020). Twenty-two people died in 2019, up from four deaths in 2018. In 2017 there were 19 fatalities, 13 in 2016, and 24 in 2015—[* statistics can change according to coronial findings]. Key risk factors for recreational boaties are failure to wear lifejackets all the time; inability to communicate for help when an accident happens; failure to check the weather forecast before going out; and alcohol use. The Executive Director of the NZ Marine Industry Association, Peter Busfield added that International travel used to be the boating markets biggest competitor. With that now on hold, boating is taking off! “In addition to record boat sales, we are seeing record employment of apprentices to build the boats that are being sold - a win-win for New Zealand. While boat sales dropped 95% during April to June - boat sales July to November were double compared to the same time last year and this more than compensated for the earlier drop”, says Busfield. Industry reports showed 2020 was ahead of 2019 sales, with order books filling up production for 2021. “Ninety percent of trailer powerboats sold in New Zealand are made in New Zealand by over 60 manufacturers. These manufacturers and their retailers are experiencing record sales, and this is evidenced by the increase of apprenticeships signedup over the last four months - 170 in the four months to November 2020 compared with 40 in the same period last year” added Busfield.

Matauri Bay is another jewel in NZ’s tourist crown.

HERE WAS PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR RAMP RAGE TO ARISE, AND AGAIN THE BOAT RAMPS WERE CHOCKER. One Saturday afternoon, I counted 40 boats lining up at my local Gulf Harbour boat ramp, waiting to pull out. Some I heard later, having to wait for close to two hours for their turn to pull out!! This year Carla and I were lucky enough to avoid these chaotic Auckland boat ramps. We took a mates launch for a week on the Hauraki Gulf. What a true marine wonderland. Where else can you dive for scallops and crayfish and a drop a line over for a feed of snapper? All in less than an hour from the CBD of the largest city in the country. The wind was mostly kind where we based ourselves around Kawau Island, which is within an hour of the boat’s marina at Gulf Harbour. After our fill of island and boating life, we were back to Gulf Harbour for a day, laundry done, caravan provisioned and loaded, and off for a week in Northland – Matauri Bay to be precise – another jewel in NZ’s tourist crown. It was here I had my first attempt at pursuing Marlin (from a 6m open trailer boat). The conditions were smooth and the fact we were 20 km plus offshore, was not a real concern for such a relatively small boat. Having an outboard mechanic onboard was also reassuring. Although we saw one Striped Marlin, we could not entice it to take the lure, so despite dragging it right past his bill, nothing happened. The anticipation was quite exciting all the same. We are truly blessed to have such a beautiful coastline, inland waterways and many lakes. I have travelled to many countries, and there is no one better that comes to mind. The variations of nautical activities from diving, fishing, watersports, picnicking, and cruising are world-leading in fresh and saltwater options. We are certainly in the right place if you are a boatie. Enjoy the rest of the summer break, and the cooler months will soon be with us, which only means adding another layer to get out and about for the braver amongst us.

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

Riding the Covid-19 wave

ITTING AT HOME DURING LAST YEAR’S LOCKDOWN, with the WiFi lagging and a barrage of questions from our parent company peppering my inbox every day, it would be fair to say that pessimism far outweighed any positive thoughts I could muster. The daily Covid-19 report at 1.00pm was followed by the evening news forecasting increased unemployment and an almost certain reduction in house values up to 5%. The news was overwhelmingly negative and the government’s total ban on boat use seemed excessive, especially given other water activities such as surfing were still deemed OK. But having emerged from our houses into the reality of our post-lockdown world, it seems that the marine industry has become one of the heroes and a driving force in the recreational market. No sooner had the ban on boating ended but the phone start ringing. It was obvious by October that the stock available, along with production capacity at Suzuki Marine, was not going to meet demand. Rolling into 2021, the market is still full speed ahead. Enquiry continues to outpace supply of new hulls and outboard motors. So why the change, what’s driving this flood of new boaties into the waterways of NZ? There’s the obvious explanation of customers spending within NZ. Internal consumption is up as overseas flights remain, to a large degree, grounded. Then there’s the increased awareness of our mortality and a “let’s live for today” mindset that’s being used as a prop by many for a ‘reward me’ programme. Borrowing money is also cheap, with interest rates on our mortgage or from loan companies at some of the lowest rates ever. With an average quoted increase in house prices of 19%, getting that loan from the bank has been fairly straightforward. It’s not over yet. The rest of the world is still battling Covid-19 and many of the supply chains are either broken or buckling under the strain. For example, the main companies that produce IC chips can’t keep up with worldwide demand. These chips are used in navigation systems, reversing cameras and a host of electronics, automotive and marine. A lack of IC chips is halting motor vehicle production, whereas a lack of cardboard for packaging is impacting others. The list goes on and on and the reasons so complex that it’s taken a pandemic to really expose how vulnerable we are to even the slightest break in the supply chain. With some NZ boat builders running out of the specific grade of aluminium they use and build slots for larger vessels inching well into 2022, there will be disappointed customers that will not make it onto the water in 2021. Speaking on behalf of Suzuki Marine, we know that challenges exist for us as we forecast the remainder of the year - whether this is production capacity, shipping availability or just internal logistics, it’s not going to be business as usual. Our advice is to be patient, talk with your dealer now about next summer and plan ahead. Purchasing off the hook may not be the way of 2022.

premium comfort and luxury, while enhancing the superb indoor/outdoor lifestyle features that make the SUV models so practical and popular. The Riviera design team in collaboration with 4D Designs have created a yacht that offers the choice of three or four staterooms, three bathrooms and a utility, crew or additional accommodation aft. In addition, there is a superb alfresco deck dining and gourmet galley with island bench, a side saloon door leading to generous walk-around side decks, and a foredeck that is a separate, lavish entertainment hub. Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst says the decision to introduce the 645 SUV came after requests from current Riviera owners and the global dealer

SCIBS 2021 Will Be A Great Destination For Kiwis SCIBS has always been a popular destination for Kiwi marine enthusiasts and 2021 looks like being well worth the visit. The 2021 exhibition returns with exciting new innovations, exhibitors and visitor experiences.

S

ANCTUARY COVE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW’S 32ND EDITION WILL AGAIN TRANSFORM SANCTUARY COVE’S PRISTINE MARINA AND MARINE VILLAGE INTO A BUSTLING INDUSTRY SHOWCASE, WELCOMING THE WORLD’S BIGGEST NAMES IN BOATING. Attracting over 45,000 visitors each year, with over 300 exhibitors and 600 watercraft on display, SCIBS 2021 is on track to be a spectacular event, showcasing the finest the industry has to offer, from best-in-class prestigious superyachts, power boats, catamarans and sailing boats, as well as RIBs, day boats, fishing boats, sports, ski

and tow boats. Additional space will be allocated to premium on-water displays, coupled with significant space for the growing trailer boat segment, expanding both ends of the marine market. This year’s Show will give visitors the first look at the magnificent $12 million expansion of the Sanctuary Cove Marina, the final stages of which are due for completion in April with stateof-the-art undercover berths, enabling Sanctuary Cove to accommodate premium recreational vessels from 50 feet to superyachts up to 165 feet. After Covid-19 saw the cancellation of last year’s Show, SCIBS bounced back in truly spectacular style, hosting the hugely successful Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival in November 2020 - one of only three boat shows to be held anywhere in the world last year. A precursor to SCIBS 2021, the Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival saw over 120 exhibitors and 20,000 visitors descend on the Marine Village and Sanctuary Cove Marina in a celebration of the strength and resilience of the marine industry, even in the face of Covid-19. SCIBS 2021 follows in the footsteps of not only the Sanctuary Cove Boating Festival, but also SCIBS 2019, which

attracted over 47,000 visitors. Many of SCIBS’ key exhibitors such as Riviera, Maritimo, Horizon, Princess, Northside Marine, QMC and Nitro Marine were among the first to secure exhibitor space, backing SCIBS as the mustattend boat show on the Asia-Pacific calendar. Leigh-Smith Yachts, specialists in luxury motor yachts, were one of the first large exhibitors to sign on for this year’s Show. Ryan Leigh-Smith says SCIBS has always been one of the premier events on the worldwide marine calendar, and he believes the 2021 Show will be another bumper year. Mark Western, Director of Horizon Yacht Australia agrees. “Enquiry for the luxury yacht market remains strong and as such, we believe that big things will come from SCIBS 2021,” Mr Western says. “We’re excited to be a part of this event and the opportunities it will present.” Greg Haines, Dealer Principal at Princess Yachts Australia, says the importance of SCIBS to the marine industry cannot be underestimated. A

UCKLAND’S ORAMS MARINE HAS HAULED OUT THE FIRST VESSEL WITH ITS 820-TONNE TRAVEL LIFT, adding to this leading superyacht yard’s already extensive capabilities in the South Pacific. The lift, of a 34.8m vessel, highlighted the yard’s capabilities, which is now able to accommodate the largest vessels cruising the Pacific. The yacht was lifted on the morning of 13 January, in the yard’s central Auckland precinct, and the operation went smoothly; the vessel is now on the hard within

Orams’ new hardstand area. The addition of the 820-tonne marine travel lift is part of a wide-ranging expansion that included creating the extra hardstand, doubled capacity for marine service companies, an 85-tonne travel lift, and the existing 600-tonne slipway already on site. Inbuilt to the project is a water treatment plant that ensures the facility is a worldleader in the refit market in protecting the environment and three 90m marina fingers, the installation of which will begin in March. The result is a full-service refit destination able to

A Very Different Sportfisher From Lomocean LOMOcean Marine have a pending launching of a very different sort of light tackle sport fisher. This 14.9m boat has been designed and built for Sea Wolf Expeditions, owned by Tom Francis, the captain of the LOMOcean wave piercer catamaran Ultimate Lady.

S

EA WOLF WILL BE OPERATED AS A CHARTER BOAT IN TAHITI WORKING IN TANDEM WITH ULTIMATE LADY. Launching of Sea Wolf is scheduled for the 15th February in Whitianga with commissioning and shakedown rolling over the following 6-week period before the boat heads to Tahiti. This 14.9m semi-displacement mono-hull was specifically designed to maximise the fishing range while also boasting significantly lower fuel burn than conventional sport fishers at typical trolling speeds. Sea Wolf breaks commonly accepted paradigms about what a ‘sports fisher’ should be, and the result is a boat very much optimised for the role envisaged and to the client and end-user requirements. Featuring a CPP (controllable pitch propeller) the semi-displacement form is intended to offer an excellent range and fuel efficiency at typical trolling speeds - and although not necessarily as fast as some high-powered conventional game boats, the vessel is still able to cruise out and back at respectable speeds. Fitted with a tuna tower, specialist sonar, large kill tanks and frozen stores, Sea Wolf will be a highly capable fishing vessel. Power is a single 500hp MAN. The forward accommodation area provides sleeping arrangements for up to 8, with separate head and shower spaces. The client also plans to use this vessel as a blue water passage maker, opening the door to some of the more remote game fishing locations the Pacific Ocean and beyond have to offer. www.lomocean.com

First Carbon Cats 20m foiling powercat nearing completion W

HEN KIWI INTERNATIONAL OFFSHORE POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING COMPETITOR, Wayne Valder decided he wanted a large pleasure cat, he obviously set his sights on something fast. “I am coming to the end of my racing career so was looking for something else challenging and a bit more futuristic than a conventional flybridge cruiser or sportfisher. “I am used to running upwards of 140mph in my MTI powercat on the US offshore circuit, so while I didn’t plan anything quite that fast in pleasure boat form, I still wanted something reasonable quick.”, says Wayne.

His quest took him to the leading light in high performance pleasure cats, Roger Hill, who drew up a 20m foiling asymmetrical cat, with enough horsepower to reach around 45 knots. Once the plans were completed, Clevedon based, Scott Lane Boatbuilders were given the task of putting the boat together. While Scott Lane has an enviable reputation for building Elite monohulls, this 20m Roger Hill design is his first power cat, plus his first all carbon fibre vessel, (hence the branding, Carbon Cats). Scott Lane built female moulds and then sent them to Tauranga boat builder Nic de May Yachts, where they produced epoxy-infused carbon

components. The composite parts were then sent back to Scott Lane’s boatyard for assembly. Nina Heatley of Clever Fox Projects was responsible for the composite engineering and details. “Essential the hull is four main components and we were able to leave the sides off as long possible during construction so the builders had easy access to the interior and were able to do most of the joinery and fit out before we closed it all in”, says Scott. There is 40mm of foam core in the running surfaces, 20mm topsides, with all bulkheads, flooring and structural areas infused carbon. Overall displacement fully loaded will be around 40 tonnes. The current

mould has the capability to be stretched out to 22m with an additional 600m wider beam. LOA is 20.27m, with a LWL of 17.10m, maximum beam of 6.70m (1.98m hull beam) and a draft of 1.47m. Wayne doesn’t plan to build just one boat, hence the set of moulds and already hull #2 is under development. He intends to take Carbon Cats to the world market and has already had some keen interest from local and overseas potential buyers. “This is the future for boating and I can see this boat being able to get to Fiji in around 40 hours, and Sydney in 34 hours, which is unheard off in a conventional monohull motor yacht”. Wayne’s own plans include having a crack at established long distance speed records such as the Sydney to Auckland and Around NZ records, both of which are held by the late Ginger Gibbs. “Speed and efficiency in bigger boats has always interested me and after speaking to Roger and learning more about his reasoning for his asymmetrical foiling powercats, I could see we were both on the same page”, says Wayne. Part of optimising the top speed and the economy at lower cruising speeds it was decided to fit a lifting foil between the hulls. CFD consultant Giuseppe Musca was tasked with analysing the performance and powering requirements and coming up with a suitable foil design. The carbon foil generates approx. 20 tonnes of lift at the optimum cruising speed and the trim and ride stability is looked after by a Humphree interceptor ride control system mounted on each transom. If you want to do over 40 knots in a boat this size you are going to need plenty of horsepower. This is provided with a pair of 1300hp M.A.N V8s, on jackshafts, linked to ZF665V gearboxes with 1.97:1 ratio. The drive line is shafts and underwater props with minimal drag P brackets. Fuel capacity is 9200 litres and the Carbon Cats 20 will also be available with smaller 800hp engines. The vessel is predicted to have a cruising range of 900nm at wide-open throttle. Wayne admits that they still have a lot of development to do with the foil and propellers, but all that will have to wait until the boat is launched in a few months. The layout features a tender garage with large rise/fall hydraulic platform, plus four cabins, including a full beam forward master. All accommodation is in the hulls with the master stateroom across the forward area of the tunnel. The spacious saloon has a port side galley and lounger with the helm and wet bar opposite. The cockpit is an entertainer’s dream with a central table aft, day head and plenty of open spaces. Wayne has chosen a Bentley inspired interior, with the hull painted in Bentley Orange. Above the cockpit and access by a fix set of steps with a flush hatch over is the ‘boat deck’ and helicopter landing space. This is a very large area of deck space and will also have a davit crane and large tender storage. If you are keen to take advantage of owning hull#2, at a price of around NZD $5,995,000, contact Wayne Valder: 0274951279 | Scott Lane: 0274765443. V12 OUTBOARD

Mercury introduces the V12 600hp Verado M ERCURY MARINE’S NEW 7.6-LITRE 600HP VERADO IS THE WORLD’S FIRST V12 OUTBOARD AND BOASTS A RANGE OF INDUSTRY-LEADING FEATURES. With this launch, Mercury continues to transform the high-horsepower outboard market, providing its most powerful and capable outboard, which includes several industry first features for a wide variety of applications. This the world’s first V12 outboard. The 600hp Verado engine features a naturally aspirated, large displacement, quad cam powerhead that generates impressive torque to get heavy boats out of the hole and on plane quickly, and to accelerate up to rated speed rapidly. It has the industry’s first two speed automatic transmission for an outboard which optimises engine rpm according to workload, facilitating

powerful acceleration and highly efficient performance at cruise. First gear is 20% lower than second gear, leveraging the engine’s high torque to accelerate the boat and get it up on plane quickly. The industry’s first steerable gearcase on an outboard pivots independently underwater while the engine’s powerhead remains in a space saving fixed position. This provides more room for multi engine configurations and a wider steering angle for agile handling. With help from contra rotating propellers, it also has better “bite” in the water for docking and other close quarters manoeuvring. The industry’s first steerable gearcase can pivot up to 45 degrees in a particular direction under joystick operation Several enhanced Mercury technologies work in conjunction to enable the V12 Verado outboard to deliver exceptional fuel economy and

range. The new 500hp Mercury SeaPro outboard is also built on the 7.6 litre V12 platform and is engineered to withstand extraordinarily demanding commercial applications around the world. The Mercury Marine V12 Verado outboard will be released in Australian and New Zealand through selected OEMs and dealers in the second half 2021. www.mercurymarine.com

The Union Internationale Motornautique (UIM), the international governing body of powerboating has announced the introduction of the first electric powerboat championship.

I

F YOU THOUGHT THE WORLD OF NEW SUPERYACHT BUILDS MIGHT HAVE GROUND TO HALT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THINK AGAIN.

The recently published 2021 Global Order Book report by Boat International GOB data shows that superyacht production ground to a halt at times in 2020, with significant impacts on delivery schedules worldwide. Superficially, this year’s Global Order Book (GOB) paints the picture of an industry in robust health, with 821 superyacht projects in build or ordered globally, an increase on last year’s number of 807. However, a dig down into the detail reveals a decidedly more mixed picture. According to our research, some 159 of those 821 projects should have been delivered before the GOB year-end of 1 September 2020. They are counted again because they are delayed and officially remain “in build”. Delayed projects are nothing new – each year the GOB includes boats whose deliveries have slipped beyond our year-end, but the sheer number this year is significant, and double that of an average year. Covid-19 has played havoc with superyacht delivery schedules around the world. Not all delays are equal, however. In some cases, the pandemic’s economic impact has forced the owners of some custom projects, and shipyards building projects on spec, to adopt a “go slow” approach. Elsewhere, lockdowns deprived shipyards of manpower and raw materials, with inevitable consequences for delivery schedules. In other cases, crews couldn’t access boats to begin training or sea trials, and some owners, seeing delivery dates slipping past summer, have opted to receive their boats in 2021, to get a “younger” model. If we were to halve the number of delayed projects to 80, which would be consistent with a normal year, you get a GOB number of 741, someway down on last year’s 807. POWER ON

YAMAHA INTRODUCES NEW, UPDATED V6 OFFSHORE OUTBOARDS Yamaha Marine has kicked off 2021 with the release of brand new product offerings including updated V6 Offshore outboards that combine new benefits while continuing with Yamaha’s reliability and performance legacy. With its V6 Offshore models being wildly popular with recreational and commercial users alike, Yamaha asked its customers how to improve upon the Yamaha V6 Offshore. Their response: “Don’t change the basic design.” There’s a reason Yamaha is voted NZ’s most trusted brand year after year. Customers also gave Yamaha some great ideas for how to make the reliable platform even better. The result is the most feature-rich V6 outboard Yamaha has ever produced. The new F225, F250 and F300 V6 Offshore models boast built-in Digital Electric Steering (DES – F250 and F300 only), Thrust Enhancing Reverse Exhaust (TERE) and other XTO Offshore-inspired features. “The new updated 4.2-liter V6 Offshore outboards now have many of the benefits previously only available on the XTO Offshore. Combining a high performance, big block V6 engine featuring outstanding power and fuel efficiency, Yamaha brings new levels of convenience and control to a proven performer,” says Richard Shaw, National Marine Manager for Yamaha Motor New Zealand. “The introduction of these outboards in addition to a new flush, side-mount control and Saltwater Series II HP propellers allows Yamaha to start the year with new innovative products that meet customer demand.”

NEW YAMAHA V6 OFFSHORE The same smooth, fast and precise Digital Electric Steering (DES) introduced on the XTO Offshore is now built-in to F300 and F250 V6 variants. The latest boat steering technology provides smooth, fast steering and, unlike some conventional steering systems, draws battery amperage only when actively in use. DES is significantly easier to rig than conventional steering systems and creates an uncluttered bilge with no steering pumps, hoses, hydraulic lines or connections, no bleeding procedure, less complexity and straightforward serviceability. There’s also a bolt-on version of DES for conventional DEC models of the new V6 Offshore (available in F225, F250, and F300). Thrust Enhancing Reverse Exhaust (TERE) keeps exhaust bubbles above the anti-ventilation plate and out of the propeller below 2500 rpm when in reverse. This means the prop bites only clean water, resulting in outstanding reverse thrust and control to back

down on fish. It’s especially effective when combined with the fast precision of Digital Electric Steering and Helm Master EX Full Manoeuvrability, which is helpful around docks and confined spaces. Yamaha’s exclusive TotalTilt function allows complete tilt up from any position with a simple double push of the “UP” trim/tilt button, or full tilt down (until trim ram contact) by the same double push of the “DOWN” trim/tilt button. There’s also a new built-in integrated tilt limiter to help prevent inadvertent damage. Plus, built-in DES models tilt higher out of the water than previous models, which helps lessen the potential for corrosion. Even after a decade of proven performance, the new 4.2-liter V6 Offshore has an improved lower unit featuring new components and design features that add durability, further increasing consumer confidence. cylinder walls, Yamaha’s V6 Offshore outboards have no conventional steel cylinder sleeves, yet the cylinder walls are 60-percent harder than steel. That means larger cylinder bores for increased displacement result in more power and torque without increasing outer cylinder dimensions. It also results in significantly lighter weight, better cooling and “micro-textured” cylinder walls that dramatically reduce internal friction loss, further increase performance and enhance reliability. Capitalising on many styling cues from its big brother, the XTO-like appearance in pearlescent white or signature Yamaha grey now feature a colour-matched lower unit, a new one-piece top cowling with water-draining air duct molding, a new bottom cowling and apron shape and raised chrome graphics on built-in DES models only. With the new and upgraded V6 Offshore, customers can choose different ignition control options on singles and twins (keyed or wireless fob). For displays, options between the new small and thin touchscreen colour display –the CL5; or use analog gauges through use of an Analog Gauge Interface (AGI). There are even multi-function display interfaces (MFDIs) available to pipe display and control features directly to select third-party MFDs. Adding more flexibility and more control, the V6 Offshore partnered with the new Helm Master EX boat control system brings modern amenities like speed control, trim assist and station selection to all DEC installations, in addition to useful convenience features like single- lever operation and center engine only to multi-engine DEC applications. Through easy-to-add Helm Master EX upgrades, boats can be equipped with Yamaha AutoPilot and even a Full Maneuverability Joystick. That includes single outboard boats!

YAMAHA FLUSH, SIDE-MOUNT DEC FOR HELM MASTER EX The new flush, side-mount DEC for the Helm Master EX system is designed to bring the benefits of Helm Master EX to a broader array of boats. Smooth, precise and easy to install, the control gives boat builders and dealers more flexibility when rigging, single and multi engine craft where digital electronic control is desired. Customers, likewise, will enjoy its ergonomic design, useful features and comfortable operation. www.yamaha-motor.co.nz

ROGER'S RAMBLINGS with Roger Tweddell

A Brief History of Antifoul Marine growth has been the bane of mariners since time began. Seaweed, barnacles, slime and even fish like remora, attaching themselves to the hull of ships has been a problem ever since man-kind built boats too big to haul ashore. EARLY ATTEMPTS AT ANTIFOUL Written records of attempts to treat ship bottoms to prevent fouling exist from as early as the 5th century BC. No doubt the problem of marine plants and animals slowing ships and fouling bottoms started thousands of years before. Early records show that a number of methods were used to prevent fouling (and probably aided watertightness) such as wax, tar and asphalt. There are also records of arsenic and sulphur mixed with oil from the 4th century BC and lead sheathing appears in the 3rd century BC. While lead did not have good fouling performance it appears to have been a common protection for ship bottoms right through to the 18th century. it protected wooden ships from worms etc. Many other varieties of foul protection were also in use such as wooden sheathing with copper nails with large heads put in touching each other to form a continuous surface. Wooden sheathing was also coated in combinations of pitch, tar, grease, brimstone, sulphur and oil. Another method that was tried was to char the hull to a depth of 5 cm or more. Many methods were tried often without success. THE DISCOVERY OF COPPER SHEATHING While copper was well known to the ancients from as early as the 10th century BC it wasn’t until the 1700’s that the properties of copper sheathing were recognized as an antifoul as well as protection against ship worms. It was the solution of copper in water that made it effective. A principle that was only just beginning to be understood 40

|

MARCH / APRIL 2021

|

at the time. While it was relatively successful for wooden ships the introduction of iron ship construction posed problems of corrosion due to galvanic action. Various methods were used to insulate the copper from the iron such as wood and tar soaked let, cork etc. Many other methods were experimented with during this period. Iron ships re-sparked interest in antifoul compositions and eventually led to the development of modern paint systems.

ANTIFOULING PAINTS Although antifoul compositions were in evidence from BC times it was the early 1800’s when many types of antifoul coatings with toxic ingredients such as copper, arsenic and mercury were experimented with. Solvents included turpentine, naphtha, and benzene with linseed oil. Shellac, tar and various other resins completing the matrix. By the turn of the century

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

the production of antifoul paints with a huge variety if toxic additives, was well under way with some success in preventing fouling on ships. By the 1930’s scientific research began to establish which toxins were effective. This then led to the development of resins that would release the toxins at a controlled rate and the evolution of antifoul paints of the 2 main categories now commonly in use for pleasure craft, hard and soft (ablative). Broadly speaking hard antifouls release or leach toxins at a progressive rate to prevent fouling in a controlled way leaving behind a depleted resin matrix on the hull. Soft or ablative antifouls erode the resin matrix to keep exposing toxins and at the same time clean the hull surface. The performance of each type is largely determined by the conditions where they are used. The most common toxin in modern antifoul paint is copper in combination with other compounds (except for aluminium hulls which are not compatible with copper). Another category of foul release coating has also been developed, that rather than poisoning the growth on hulls, prevents it from sticking. Typically to date foul release coatings are used only on the running gear (props, struts, rudders and trim tabs etc.) as it is expensive and often needs specialist application. The very fact that anti-foul paint is toxic presents a problem in this modern age of environmental concern. Is the future of marine growth prevention in antifoul paint, foul release coatings or the new foul-release wraps? Stay tuned for the next issue as we investigate “foul release” options for pleasure craft.

VOLVO PENTA LAUNCHES INTEGRATED ASSISTED DOCKING

New Assisted Docking automation technology gives the captain a whole new level of control, taking another critical step toward selfdocking and easy boating. The Assisted Docking system integrates a software layer developed in house with the company’s GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System and proprietary Inboard Performance Systems (IPS) for a complete package including HMI (human-machine interface) at the helm, electronics via the engine, propulsion systems and sensors, and advanced

navigation processing power for a much easier boating experience, even in rough conditions. The Assisted Docking system consists of the joystick that controls the steering input and the GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System antenna to know the exact position and heading. The captain manoeuvres the vessel with the joystick – thereby informing the system which direction it should head in and at what speed. If you move the joystick forward, the system lays out a path straight ahead from the boat, and the boat starts to follow a straight line with the indicated speed. The boat docking system also considers specific external forces (i.e. wind, current) and the EVC system – upgraded with in-house developed software – compensates to ensure the boat follows the captain’s intentions. It does this by calculating drive angles, and thrust then acts on the drift and moves the boat back to its intended course. The boat docking system keeps this course

by constantly fine-tuning the steering angles and thrust. The captain is still needed at the helm, but Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking system is continuously compensating for engine input and engine and drive output to help ensure the boat moves as he or she intends. Everything is designed to work together. It is humanmachine interaction at its best. The Assisted Docking system will be available in spring 2021 to install new boat models, as an upgradeable option for Volvo Penta IPS-equipped motor, and as a retrofit. Check out the video and see just what we are talking about. www.volvopenta.com

Featuring simplified electrical management, a high-quality appearance, and significant functional improvements, the next generation Yanmar VC20 Vessel Control System integrates with Yanmar’s complete line up of common rail engine series, transmissions, controls and displays. The VC20 has been developed for single, twin, and triple engine installations. The new system offers dedicated control modes for all Yanmar control system functions including Yanmar joystick controls: JC10A for sterndrive applications and JC20A for inboard applications featuring the unique Vetus extended bow thruster. Enabling up to four helm stations, the VC20’s new streamlined architecture features fewer components, connections and cables, reducing the number of helm ECUs to one for multiple station configurations by converting to CAN directly inside the control heads. VC20 is applicable for Yanmar’s newly-launched 6LF and 6LT powerboat engine line up and other established common rail marine diesel engines for sail, power and light-duty commercial applications, the JH-CR, 4LV, 8LV and 6LY-CR series. www.powerequipment.co.nz

GLENDINNING JOYSTICK CONTROLS

The Glendinning ProPilot is an optional accessory added to most existing and any new Glendinning control systems on boats with inboard propulsion and bow/stern thrusters. The Glendinning ProPilot system is suitable for installing all inboard powerboats with bow thrusters (or bow and stern thrusters), and sailboats with both bow and stern thrusters fitted. An integrated thruster control keypad can control the thrusters directly without the need for a separate thruster panel. Combining the available thrust of the boat’s engine and thruster (s) the Glendinning ProPilot system allows simple and intuitive boat handling even in the most unfavourable winds or currents. It is compatible with mechanical or electronically controlled engine throttles, shifted transmissions and controlled trolling valves. Plus for use with all thruster brands and types, including, electric, hydraulic, single speed and proportional. The ProPilot-S is a propulsion control system optimised for single-engine applications. It is compatible with any transmission, either mechanically or electronically throttled and any brand of thrusters. Installation is straightforward since the ProPilot joystick can be added to existing helm stations control heads with a short CANbus cable, and connected to the helm station thruster controls with plug-in connectors for any brand or type of bow/ stern thruster. The joystick function is customised (balanced) for each vessel using an easy to use PC program. www.tenob.co.nz

C R U I S I N G M AT T E R S with Laurie Cranfield

Reflecting On Rapport’s Summer Cruise Despite exceptional numbers of cruisers predicted to enjoy this holiday season we didn’t notice areas we visited being any busier than normal. Maybe people had less annual leave available or was it the relatively strong south-westerlies prevalent for much of the time? As we write this article the latest community case of covid-19 has occurred in Northland making us all hope like hell it’s contained and life continues to carry on near normal. We set off after Boxing Day for a seven week cruise, our first stop being Motutapu Island at our favoured anchorage of Waikalabubu, very sheltered in south-westerlies and only minutes away from great fishing in the Rakino Channel. After collecting some family from Gulf Harbour marina we head to Mahurangi Harbour. The popular anchorage here is Otarawao Bay on the port side as you enter, but we head a further mile up harbour to anchor off Oaua Point at the entrance to the Pukapuka Inlet. Here it’s more sheltered and quieter, the only sounds being the splashes of some large fish jumping. Spending a few days around Kawau Island we enjoy good fishing on the island’s north-east coast around Fairchild Reef. In strong westerlies a good anchorage at Kawau is difficult to find, the best one being Harris Bay in Bon Accord Harbour. But that’s generally crowded so we anchor at Goldsworthy Bay on the southern side of Kawau Bay finding excellent shelter and only two other boats for company. In northerlies our preference is Bostaquet Bay. A visit to the Kawau Boating Club is a must with diesel and water at the wharf, basic provisions, laundry and shower facilities available and an excellent licensed cafe where we enjoy a perfect lunch of seafood chowder and smoked fish pie. In fact we like it so much we join the club. Most of our time is spent at Aotea / Great Barrier Island and overall it’s hard to beat providing a huge number of 44

varied, safe and interesting anchorages and some great sandy beaches. It’s well supplied with fuel (at about $1 per litre above mainland prices), water and stores and offers superb fishing. We regularly caught good feeds of snapper up to a 72cm, 7kg specimen that we returned to the sea and even caught legal snapper in five metres of water at one of our anchorages. There must be a few crays around too as the skipper of a nearby boat gave us the rare treat of one to enjoy. The Barrier also has many great walking tracks taking you to scenic vantage points, hot mineral springs, kauri dams, waterfalls and the remains of a whaling station. If the arts are your thing you can visit the studios of several local talented painters and potters. Our preferred Barrier anchorages are

Kiwiriki (“Two-Island”) Bay and Wairahi (“Ghost”) Bay in Port Fitzroy, Nagle Cove and Karaka Bay (where laundry facilities are available at Orama Oasis) in Port Abercrombie, the Broken Islands in settled weather, Bowling Alley Bay in north-westerlies through to easterlies and Whangaparapara in easterlies or light westerlies. Smokehouse Bay is very popular and it’s well worth going ashore to see the bath house, where you can also exchange books and most often chat to other boaties. Fresh water is available here at high water from a hose on the grid. Nearby in Ghost Bay Barrier Gold sell manuka honey and related products from a rustic barn where you can also catch up on the local news.

Recycling can be disposed free and garbage $5 per bag near the Port Fitzroy wharf where fuel, water, ice and bait are also available. Take a short walk up the hill where a store offers basic supplies, beverages and lpg bottle refills, but the best place for supplies is Tryphena where virtually everything is consistently available from the Stonewall Store at Puriri Bay, one of the island’s nicest sandy beaches except in strong westerlies. The Barrier has its own private radio station working VHF channel 01 with weather forecasts at 0745 and 1745 while Coastguard can be contacted on channel 60. In most of the anchorages we visit there are roughly 60 per cent yachts and 40 per cent motor vessels. Among the yachts it’s noticeable there are less traditional designs and more imports, including catamarans. When we started cruising in the 1980s 12 metre vessels such as Marklines, Corsairs, Rivieras and Vindexes were considered large and Kennedy 46s were enormous. Now these are small by comparison with many of today’s newer vessels and it’s not uncommon to see vessels in the 20-25 metre range. The subject of sharks has been widely covered in the media since Waihi Beach’s tragic fatal attack in early January. We hooked and released six small sharks while snapper fishing and saw several others swimming near us or other anchored boats including three large bronze whalers just off Port Fitzroy wharf. The experts say the water’s clearer and there’s more people around to notice them, but we’re not convinced and others aren’t either judging by the noticeable drop in numbers of swimmers off anchored boats. There’s a strong case for not filleting fish where people are likely to swim as sharks are certainly attracted by the scraps. It’s much better to bag the frames and scraps and dump them later in deeper isolated waters, something we’re now doing and encourage others to do the same.

Panko Cajun Crumbed Pan-Fried Elephant Fish

Chefs Tip: Ensure you do not over cook the fish although this recipe may be used with any thick fleshed fillets or steaks. Dress the salad with Cocavo Avocado & Black Truffle Dressing

Elephant Fish are only found in New Zealand. Most commonly found around the east cost of the South Island at depths of around 200m. The flesh of the Elephant Fish is of good edible quality and closely resembles that of Hapuka (Groper). INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •

Combine all the salsa ingredients together and place into the fridge while you prepare and cook the fish. Combine egg and milk together to form an egg wash. Dredge the fish fillets through seasoned flour then place into the above egg wash to coat well. Dredge through the Cajun Seasoned Panko Breadcrumbs ensuring a good coat of crumb all over. Bring a heavy based pan up to temperature then add in the Turmeric & Lemon Zest Coconut and Avocado Oil. Drop a little crumb into this, when the crumb turns golden you know the oil is hot enough to place the fillets in. Place the fillets in to cook 1-2 minutes each side depending on thickness but ensuring you do not over cook as this fish will dry out quickly. To plate, place the fillets in the middle of the plate with 2x tbsp of the salsa on each fillet.

FISHING

with Bruce Duncan (aka Captain Swish)

AFTER THE SPAWNING IS OVER!

A massive uptake in small centre console tinnies and inflatable boats being lightweight cheap to run and shallow draft now is the perfect time to think outside the square and fish your feet first.

H

aving spawned snappers’ natural instincts are to go on a far-ranging feeding frenzy to rebuild their body fat reserves for the onslaught of winter. Every beach estuary around the coast is like vast paddocks for snapper to graze on shellfish worms’ crabs and the likes.

I can detect the slightest movement, allowing me to know exactly when to strike to set the hook. Most of the time, I can fish without the need of a sinker, which again means less resistance for the fish to detect. At most, a ¼ or ½ oz will get the bait down on the bottom.

Post spawning snapper are very transient feeders moving about, whereas they take up residence in the one area in the winter. Whereas all the usual summer hot spots will fish well at certain times, snapper tends to pass through the spot rather than holding on it, so it can also be a bit hit and miss if you aren’t in the right ngrays feeding on shellfish which proves that they feed in very shallow water.

I usually expect snapper around the 1 ½ to 3 kg mark, but over the years I have caught several snapper in less than 2m of water up over the magical 9kg (20 lb) as well as kingfish and gurnard.

Drifting with soft baits or a micro jig or stray lining when targeting areas of very shallow water, you need to get a feel for the area first. Look at low tide for channel drop-offs, patches of foul or gutters. Watch as the tide starts to rise for any influence these may have on the tide flow direction. Knowing where best to anchor to take advantage of the tide and wind all play a big part in getting the burly trail to cover the target area. Snapper feeding on crabs and shellfish are not aggressive. Mostly they are just picking up and lightly munching a bait, so using a light line such as 4-8 kg can be cast further but has less resistance in the water when a fish picks up the bait. The less the resistance a fish feels when it picks up a bit, the better the chance of a hookup. This is the reason I do not use a trace and tie the hook directly to the mainline. Sounds a bit risky but my hook up rate is higher, as

Fishing this type of habitat is always best on the incoming tide, ideally with the high tide coming on at dawn or dusk. Prior knowledge of where you need to anchor, allowing for the wind and tide is a distinct advantage. Using a depth sounder will be of limited use as the footprint [the size of the bottom showing on the screen] in shallow water is very small and only the odd fish will show. Once anchored, shorten it up as much as you can, this will minimise the boat’s swing, helping you keep in touch with your bait. Burly and ground bait is critical to bring the fish to within casting range. It’s vital not to drop your burly bomb any lower than halfway down, as at this depth the coverage will be far greater than if it were on the bottom. The scent of the burly draws fish towards you, but the chopped-up ground bait tossed as far from the boat gets the fish aggressive, competing for food and they hit the baits hard. The tricks I have learned are watching for the slightest line movement and

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

using small-sized baits such as half pillies, baby squid or strip baits. It is critical to ensure a solid hook up that the barb of the hook is exposed from the bait. Using 7 0/0 hooks seldom do I gut hook fish. They are easier to rig the bait with the barb exposed, plus large enough to hold while removing the hook, with less stress and damage to the fish. Naturally, most baits will be cast directly off the stern in the same direction, and distance from the boat, but as the fish will be spread out, casting a pattern of baits will get the best coverage. Baits that are cast well out from either side of the boat, even with a tiny sinker will in time be taken back by the tide so these baits will in effect cover more ground. Once the bait hits the water, wind in the slackline, keeping the rod tip low and pointed directly in line with the bait, allows you to see and feel any line movement or bite. You will feel pressure on your fingertip as the line starts to straighten out, and the weight of the fish comes onto the line. Strike hard, and all the time looking directly at the rod tip. As soon as you see a slight bend in the tip, instantly wind down fast keeping the bend in the rod tip as you lower it to prevent the fish tossing the hook. Fishing shallow water is ideal for teaching the kids. While waiting for the burly trail to kick in, get the kids catching fresh bait, as often sprats or piper, either butterflied or put out under a balloon will get scoffed by either a kingfish or big snapper. The perfect snapper bait fresh piper rigged with a 7 0/0 hook, the barb is exposed to ensure a solid hook up.

B O AT R E V I E W MARITIMO S51

Sport Fishing Sedan TEXT BY BARRY THOMPSON

D

istinction, a Maritimo S51, is avid game fisherman, Ian Witters, 24th powerboat and his third Maritimo. Previously his boating collection has comprised a variety of ski boats, cabin cruisers and launches. Ian and his family have for many years been heavily involved in waterskiing, both as participants and at an administrative level, so it was only natural that ski boats from such distinguished brands such as Malibu and Nautique should grace the driveway. However, they are not fishing boats, and Ian loves his fishing so hence the foray into saltwater brands. Ian has not always been a game fisherman, having honed his fishing skills catching trout on Lake

Waikaremoana and the Rotorua lakes, where he realised that he loved fishing at a young age. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that he had his first taste of towing lures at sea and after landing a few Marlin, (the first a 109 kg stripey off Whangaroa) but also dropping a whole lot more, he admits he was addicted. “I loved it with a passion and was keen to learn as much as I could to perfect the art of not only hooking up a big fish but also landing it, something I quickly found out is not always that straightforward”, says Ian. One of his early fishing boats was a Tristram 851 Grandeur, but his first big sportfisher was a Genesis 4000, which was the first IPS boat in Australasia. This was

Barry Thompson ticked off another experience from his bucket list when he spent a day towing lures searching for a marlin, courtesy of Ian Witters and his Maritimo S51, one of the few S51s set up almost exclusively for sport fishing.

followed by his first Maritimo, an M52, which got him hooked on the bigger boats. With GFC getting in the way, Ian sold the M52 and scaled back to a Rayglass 4000, which he says was an excellent boat for game fishing and while he caught a lot of Marlin and Yellowfin, it was enough to make him want to go back to a more serious sportfishing boat. Next up was a Riviera 43 with a tower, which he clocked up 3500 hours in seven years. When it was time to move on, he went back to Maritimo, this time for the M500, which he set up expressly for fishing again. He landed a lot of big fish in the 12 months

he owned it. Next moved was to go back to a big trailer boat, and this was filled by a Grady-White 330, a boat that had the advantage of being towable, despite its size. “I had this great idea that I could fish one weekend on the East coast and then trail the boat across to Raglan and fish the West coast, but it proved a logistical problem transporting such a big boat, so I canned the idea and after a couple of seasons sold the boat and brought the current Maritimo” adds Ian. While the Maritimo S51 may not be a

purists idea of a serious sportfishing boat, Ian says it is perfect for the task. “I didn’t want a flybridge as I find when you are fishing they split the crew and especially if you are short-handed that can be a problem when the action starts and things need to happen in a hurry. “What I like about the S51 is the ability to see everything from the helm, at the same level, so you are never far away from everything, plus I have a second station in the cockpit which I can also use when we PowerboatMagazine.co.nz PowerboatMagazine.co.nz | 53 |

The sociability and the style is another reason Ian was drawn to the S51. The layout features three cabins below decks with a full-beam offset master stateroom with queen berth and large mezzanine style ensuite. Panoramic hull windows and ports allow for stunning views and fresh air ventilation. A second, VIP stateroom, with queen berth and adjoining ensuite, is located forward. PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

Ian says that the size of the Maritimo S51 is ideal for his boating needs and is confident of taking it well offshore if that’s where the big fish are. It’s a boat he can easily handle himself, and while the S51 is going to be more about fishing, it still serves double duty as a family cruiser when required. “I have had the boat out in some nasty seas, and I am more than pleased with the way it performed”, says Ian. When Ian ordered the boat, he stipulated a game fishing tower, but due to Covid and the USA’s supply of materials, it was not available before the boat was shipped to New Zealand just before Xmas last year. Does Ian miss it? “Yes and no. While at times it would be good for spotting fish, the fact we have fitted a MAQ Omni Sonar has superseded a lot of the benefits of a tower, so I am not sure I will both with one now”. Ian refers to it as his underwater radar and says he is still learning to use it to its best advantage. (See Sidebar). He added; “The stability issue is also something I considered when looking at a big flybridge boat as you tend to spend a lot of hours in cruise mode in sloppy seas and a high profile flybridge is going to get tossed around more than a sedan bridge in my opinion”. To increase that stability factor, Distinction is fitted with a Seakeeper 6 gyro. I have to say that after more than eight hours towing lures at 7.5 knots in a reasonable sloppy sea state off the Northland coast I really got to appreciate the benefit of a gyro. Both low and high speeds, you could feel the impact the Seakeeper had on the way the boat rode. For anyone setting up a boat for game fishing, especially when a low-speed mode is the norm, fitting a gyro is a must-have.

SCANIA POWER

Distinction is powered by a pair of Scania D13 800hp engines which return a top speed over 30 knots. Standard power for the S51 is twin 670HP Volvo Penta D11›s or the higher output twin Volvo D11 725HP. Together with Maritimo’s hydrodynamically engineered, wide beam variable deadrise hull and deep V entry, this gives the S51 comfortable, efficient ocean-going endurance. There are two wing fuel tanks, structurally moulded into the hull’s liner system offer a combined capacity of 3100 litres. I was amazed at the fuel efficiency of the S51/ Scania package when we were trolling. At 7.5 knots @ 650 rpm the Scania engines were only using 7.0 lph each. That gave us a range of more than 1800nm. Considering we covered about 120nm in the nine hours we were on the water, we could have gone all the way to the Great Barrier Reef chased 1000lb, Black Marlin, at Lizard Island and still had some fuel in reserve. Nice thought. Best cruise was around 20-23 knots @ 1600-1700 rpm which saw a total burn of 158-177 lph and arrange of approximately 360 nm.

FISHING COCKPIT

Maritimo offers two cockpit styles for the S51, one of them being what they call their fishing transom. This sees the removal of the aft bench seat to leave an open cockpit fishing space. The transom features twin entry doors, a central live bait tank, a pair of tuna tubes and in Distinction’s case, a Reelax game chair. There is a second live-bait tank under the starboard coaming and a BBQ opposite on the port side. Wide bulwarks both sides, a

MAQ Omni Sonar

Ian Witters says one of the best pieces of kit he has aboard Distinction is the MAQ Omni Sonar, a 360’, high performance, stabilised, omnidirectional fishing sonar. (Effectively underwater radar, looking out to 1,650 metres in every direction). His MAQ Omni Sonar model 60 allows him to continuously scan the water column up to 1650m around the boat. The Omni can find fish schools faster, and it is around those schools that potentially marlin and other big fish will be loitering. The Omni can approximate size/weight, allowing a fisherman to select small schools of fish and track them well before seeing them on a conventional sounder. Ian says that he finds the MAQ Omni Sonar a suitable replacement for not having a tower and even though he always intended to add a tower, he is now not in such a hurry to install one. “We find the sonar takes a lot of the guesswork out of looking for baitfish and that has resulted in several hookups because we go to where the big fish are and not waiting for them to come to us, and it is still very early days for us”, says Ian. The MAQ Omni Sonar has a simple to use joystick, and a variety of settings to tune the unit to the given conditions, and target species. It also has audio, that reacts when your target species are in the zone. Fish can be tracked by selecting auto or manual mark. The transducer is designed to optimise target detection and tracking of nearsurface or near bottom targets, making MAQ ideal for shallow water fishing where detection distances are typically 20 times the water depth. Highly directional 5-degree vertical beams are stabilised to ensure target detection in all weather conditions. The MAQ Omni sonar has either 22kHz, 60kHz or 90kHz transducer frequency and an optional RDT feature increases detection distances by increasing transmitter output by four times. Omni Directional Sonar is viewing 360 degrees around the boat on every transmission pulse. www.waypointelectronics.co.nz

MARITIMO S51 signature feature of Maritimo, offer a safe, secure passage to the foredeck area. A large section of the cockpit sole lifts to reveal a dedicated rod rack for the six-game reels/rods, a foldup tender, outboards and dive gear. Either side is deep storage bins accessed from the cockpit, one which has been converted to an icemaker. While serious game fishing boats don’t have a swim platform deck, as this is a multi-purpose boat, Ian decided to include it. If you are looking at an S51 and don’t intend to go game fishing, then you also have the options of an additional 1.2m hydraulic extended swim platform creating a total 2.0m adventure deck. The cockpit deck itself is protected by the fully moulded extended hardtop - providing ample shelter from the elements. The bi-fold doors that split the saloon from the cockpit fold back out of the way, so there is uninterrupted sightline from the helm to the transom. Something that certainly helped sell Ian on the S51. The port side aft galley is equipped with top-line appliances and configured around the idea of prolonged stays on board - with a heavy focus on storage and meal preparation. What Ian refers to as a ‘fishing’ change he turned the island bench around to have the drawers facing outwards. These have been taken over as tackle drawers where all the lures, jigs and fishing paraphernalia are stowed. The forward saloon flanked by lounges and dinette has panoramic views through the screen and sliding side windows. Maritimo describes the U-shaped lounge and dining table area layout as space to seat six in comfort and is smartly integrated with the helm to maximise space and ensure you remain comfortably connected to the action. Could not agree more. The S51 is spacious, innovative, superbly finished with Maritimo’s renowned handcrafted interiors the Maritimo S51 is both easy on the eye and easy to handle. This season, has just begun (end of January) and Ian has landed two Marlin and a couple of Yellowfin Tuna but says he is still learning as he is still dropping fish. He admits he is getting better, but at the moment the fish are winning. Having the right gear and the right conditions are critical factors when chasing game fish. For our trip around and behind the Poor Knights Islands, the water temperature was a perfect 21-22 deg, and the water was a deep blue. Perfect marlin territory, but someone forgot to tell them. We trolled for 8 hours and never so much as saw a tailor a sniff at a lure. Were had five lines out in a traditional Staggered Marlin spread. All lines were 37 kg on Shimano Tiagra 80WA reels and Kilwell International 37 kg full roller chair rods. We were running a mix of five different styles, and coloured lures which Ian says have proven to be the most successful over recent seasons in the waters he fishes. We also ran two dredges teasers. An American’ Tournament Cable’ EZ/6 collapsible teardrop dredge (runs under the water mimicking a small school of fish to attract Marlin), and a surface teaser of multiple soft plastic fish again to attract Marlin. wt All the right stuff but unfortunately no results. As this was my first real experience at game fishing, I was disappointed that I never got to feel the rush of adrenaline as a big blue, stripey, or yellowfin and I fought for total control. It looks like that will have to wait for another day.

TARA TOO WAS DESTINED TO BECOME AN ICON IN THE SPORT

B

ack in the late 1960s and early 1970s offshore powerboat racing was gaining in popularity and despite the best efforts of some of the early organisers to keep it to stock and custom built family style cruisers, there were those who wanted to compete in 100% genuine race boats. One of the earliest was Auckland baker Ivan Boyce, who in 1968 had Rex Henry design for him the 5.8m (19ft) Tara Too, which was destined to become an icon in the sport. Along with boats like Bill Stevenson’s Mystic Miss, Trevor Burnand’s Kitten (a smaller version of Tara Too) and John Meredith’s Formula 233, Tara Too went on to win many races. Tara Too was built in timber by Auckland boatbuilder Rod Holt, with help from Ivan’s crew of Brian Millet and Don Dainty and

others. Ivan’s request to Henry was for a very fast family fishing boat and to get around the draconian rules imposed by the PBRO, it even had rowlock holders. Construction was three skins of heart kauri with a total thickness of 3/4”, fastened with copper nails and glued with resorcinol. The stem and keelson were combined in one laminated member running from the stem head to the transom. Metal reinforcement was used around the frames. Overall, Tara Too was a very strong but extremely heavy race boat. Power was a 7-litre Chev Corvette engine which was dyno’d at Lees Marine and turned out 350shp @ 5000 rpm. Subsequent modifications saw that raised to around 425shp, using pump gas and conventional marine manifolds. On top was a pair of Holley 780cf carbs on an Edelbrock quad-ram inlet manifold. The power was transferred through a Casale V-drive mounted between the two forward crew seats. A special threebladed nickel-alloy bronze propeller was engineered by Ged McCarthy and the top speed when everything was running right was around 60mph. That was reasonably fast for the time. The boat was first launched in January 1969 and taken to Gisborne for the first race. However, a damaged camshaft in the new engine saw their debut race become a disaster and they returned to the ramp. At Wellington that year the spark plug leads had been accidentally crossed and they never made the start. At Rotorua the same month Tara Too collided with another boat and put a hole in the bow. They just made it back to the ramp but sank beside it, in just over 1m of water. In the Auckland race that season they ran the Atlantic 100 with high hopes, PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

but fuel issues slowed them down in the early stages. At Kawau on the return run home they changed fuel tanks and the problems went. However, after passing just about everything in the field on the way back to the finish under the Auckland Harbour Bridge they couldn’t pull back Bill Coughey in Panic Mouse who beat them by two minutes. The next race in Auckland was the Atlantic Boat Show marathon and this saw another withdrawal with a damaged propeller. Taupo in 1970 saw another broken prop and things weren’t any better with problems at the following events in Gisborne, New Plymouth and Rotorua. Two seasons and no wins, but Ivan and his team were ever hopeful and knew that with a bit of luck they had the boat that could beat the competition. At last Tara Too gained her first major success in the Auckland Atlantic 100 in April 1970, winning both the speed and performance sections. The next win came at a very rough Wellington race in the same year. However it wasn’t until the 1971 season that Tara Too’s name was engraved into 60

the New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Championship Trophy after a successful season. Ivan retired from the sport in the early ‘70s and although the boat was sold and raced a few times over the following years, it never attained the same status that it had when under the ownership of Ivan Boyce. It was then covered up and left to spend the rest of its days in a barn the Thames, a roosting place for chickens. However, as luck would have it, Ivan’s son Mike found out about the boat, and managed to take ownership. Today the hull rests at his marine shop in Silverdale, just north of Auckland, awaiting full restoration. Mike has done 90% of the work on the hull and says that he is ready to sell it. Although he did have a big block Chev for it, that has long gone so a new owner would still have to scource a powerplant. It would be great to see Tara Too back on the water and running in the Classic Class, reliving some of the past glory of those formative years of offshore racing in New Zealand. Interested, call Mike on 09-426 8556

hile they are unlikely to ever become truly mainstream, there is a definite and, it appears, growing demand for large, goanywhere, cabin RIBs. One who recognised this trend early, and chose to do something about it, is Peter Carlson. Peter, in modern parlance, is what one would call a serial marine entrepreneur. And a very successful one. He owns one of the country’s largest marine dealerships (Family Boats in Auckland’s East Tamaki); a South Island based aluminium boat builder (Southern Boats) and, using local company K2 Marine, takes South African-made Gemini RIB hulls, gets them to add GRP cabin tops, then fits them out with engines, electronics, upholstery and the like and sells them as the Assault range. Peter and his crew have successfully been doing this since 2008, initially with a forward cabin configuration and, more recently, following a change in hull shape from Gemini, as a walkaround. The Pursuit 11 is the largest model in the Assault range and, considering it comes with a price tag ranging from just under $NZ300,000 to almost $NZ400,000, surprisingly popular. This one, Peter’s own, is the third and, as one would expect, rather well equipped. Like the preceding pair, it is powered by twin Yamaha 4-stroke outboards. In this case, 350hp V8s. The previous two were 425hp V8s and 300hp V6s. Although there is obviously a reasonably noticeable difference between the three in both outright speed and fuel consumption at the top end, Peter notes that, at cruising speeds, the difference in economy is almost non-existant.

GREAT PERFORMER

Despite its size and the fact the Pursuit 11 has a full sized cabin, with 2-metre long berths and an electric toilet, these boats are not typically used for overnighting. They are primarily day boats, used to transport reasonably large numbers of people from one home to another, from a beach house to an island beach or to a larger size vessel. They have proven particularly popular in places were people have holiday homes on offshore islands or in remote settings; places such as Auckland, the Bay of Islands and the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand and Perth in Western Australia (think Rottnest and their other offshore islands). Power options are twin 200hp - 425hp outboards. King and queen seating are well protected by the hardtop.

Peter says the boats are also good for transporting groups of divers and fishers and he and four or five diving mates regularly use his to get to their favourite spots. While we didn’t have large numbers on boat (there was just Peter and I), the Assault’s performance leaves no doubt about it’s load-carrying abilities. For a start, it pops onto the plane easily, at just 2000rpm, and there is absolutely no noticeable bow lift as it does so. This boat doesn’t so much get over the hump as completely ignore it. Acceleration is impressive, really impressive, right throughout the rev range and so is handling. There is clearly no need for trim tabs (which is a good thing as they would be awkward to install). Despite the relatively high cabin top, there is no tendency to lean into the wind and the outboard trim is more than

enough to keep the bow where it needs to be. During our morning on the water, the seas off Tairua were still pretty messy, a result of a week or more of easterly quarter winds. With an LOA of 10.8m, this was of no concern whatever to the Pursuit. Using its long waterline, it went upwind without crashing or banging and driving it downhill was a sheer joy. Even after purposely seeking the gnarliest pieces of water to navigate, and doing so at high speed, it was impossible to upset (or even moderately worry) this RIB. While a top speed of 53 knots and immaculate highspeed lock to lock turns are definitely fun, the thing that most impresses is how easily driven the boat is. As a trailer powerboatie, I am used to cruising at 4000-4500rpm pretty well regardless of what boat I am in. Cruising at these revs on this boat feels more like needlessly speeding. At 4000rpm we were doing 33 knots and at 4500rpm, 38. In comparison, 3000rpm gives 25.5 knots and 3500rpm a more than respectable 30 knots. Unless one is in a definite rush, either is surely enough to get from A to B and, as the accompanying table shows, the fuel consumption is a lot kinder, too.

EFFICIENT USE OF SPACE

The most obvious disadvantage of a RIB is the amount of internal space one loses to the tubes. To counter this requires good design and the very effective use of the remaining on-board area. Peter and his team have done this well. They have used the full width of the cockpit for their removable transom seat, installed king and queen seating on both sides of the hardtop and nestled a comfortable bow seat into the limited space at the front of the walkaround. In the process they have left enough 64

room for two or three people to fish from the stern and another to cast from the bow. Derived of traditional coamings and side decks, they have installed Railblaza rod and drink holders in strategic places throughout. These are easily exchangeable at a moment’s notice meaning the boat can be quickly adapted to focus on entertaining or fishing, depending upon whom is on board. When fishing, there is a live bait tank in the port side of the transom, a washdown hose and, in the unlikely event of a substantial amount of water being taken on board, scuppers on each side. A dive ladder on the starboard tube provides easy access on and off the boat at sea or at the beach. The upholstery is worthy of mention, too. For the driver’s and main passenger’s seats, Peter has used Hi Tech Plastics bases and then covered them with his own stylish and very comfortable upholstery and matched that on the queen, transom and bow seats as well. The house battery lives under the driver’s seats (the twin engine batteries are aft behind the transom seat) and there is provision for a fridge or cooker under the port side if required. A super-experienced boatie, Peter has ensured the Assault has all the electronics and “fruit” required, without making it seem as if one is on

the flight deck of 747. There is also a Garmin VHF and controls for the Roca wipers, the Marinco spotlight on the hardtop and Maxwell RC8 windlass. The latter sits on top of its own plinth rather than, as is often the case, coming through the stem under the tubes. While some may argue that this is not as aesthetically pleasing, it does have the great advantage that the whole process is clearly visible to the operator at the helm.

CONCLUSION

The Assault Pursuit 11 is a surprisingly good-looking RIB. Its raked cabin design looks like it belongs rather than being slotted in as an afterthought. Its Neptune grey tubes and the charcoal grey of its superstructure are complemented by the black hand rails and rocket launcher, with the solid teak trim and the custom pattern U-Dek lightening the look. It is also an extremely comfortable and practical day boat that, without a lot of effort could easily be a more than adequate overnighter or weekender. Having spent a few hours on board, it is no surprise that there are already numerous Assault RIBs prowling around Kiwi waters, a further 4 or 5 in Fiji and several more in Perth. Nor that with a new 9-metre version due in late March, two are already sold, before one has even hit the water. Oh, and did I mention it was fast, very fast…

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

Over the past 25 years we have seen an incredible number of new and innovative marine products, from outboard technology to electronics, deck hardware to materials. Firstly in the pages of Propeller and then through MotorYacht and now PowerBoat, we have written about, reviewed, tested and closely followed their developments. The following is our take on what we consider 25 of the most innovative and game-changing products over the past 25 years.

1

LED LIGHTING

L

ight emitting material had been around since the early 1900s, but it is only in past 10-12 years that quantum leaps in the luminous intensity of LEDs per watt facilitated efficiency and intensity improvements in lighting onboard . Gone are the days of hanging a tilly lamp off the rocket launcher to light the cockpit. Today LED lighting is mainstream, and New Zealand headquartered Hella marine has been at the forefront of the LED lighting design and development revolution

with their unique ‘fit and forget’ durability proposition. Considered a world leader in the field, it wasn’t until around 2005 that Hella marine released their first full LED navigation sets and as success bred success, Hella marine has rapidly expanded the portfolio to be the market innovators in all things LED since. However, Hella don’t have it alone, with brands such as Quick, Lumitec also very active in the LED market. Without doubt, the single most influential driver for LED technology

on yachts and powerboats is the considerable power saving on offer compared to incandescent lamps. Lighting systems are a significant part of a vessels electrical architecture where consumption can be dramatically reduced. The potential to save hundreds of amp hours is real and available now and has been proven worldwide by leading marine lighting manufacturers. Be it an overhead cockpit light or interior downlights, LED is where it’s at. PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

Yamaha 4-strokes was creating the 100hp F100A in 1998 and then, for 2001, the ground breaking 225hp F225A. At the time of its release, the F225A had the highest horsepower rating of any 4-stroke outboard

ELECTRIC TROLLING OUTBOARDS

O

.G. Schmidt invented the electric trolling motor in 1934 in Fargo, North Dakota, when he took a starter motor from a Ford Model A, added a flexible shaft, and a propeller. Because his manufacturing company was near the Minnesota/North Dakota border, he decided to call the new company Minn Kota. The company still is a significant manufacturer of trolling motors. However, it is probably not until the last 20 years that the electric trolling outboard has entered into mainstream boating. It is now common to see them on boats from 4m to 8m and some manufacturers, especially of alloy boats, offer the engine mounting plate as standard.

4 STROKE OUTBOARDS

T

wenty-five years ago, two-stroke outboards still ruled, with brands such as Evinrude, Johnson, Mariner, Mercury and Yamaha still in the 2-stroke mode. Honda led the 4-stroke market, with engines from 2hp-90hp. The first 4-stroke Yamaha motor, the F9.9A, was released in 1984. This gave Yamaha a leg up on the competition when emissions regulations started being implemented in the 1990s. While Yamaha had been developing cleaner 4-stroke models for over a decade, neither Mercury nor Johnson/ Evinrude had a single 4-stroke model in their line-up. A benchmark for

in the world. When the phased-in environmental regulations on marine engines took effect in 1996, Mercury met the new requirements with a complete fourstroke outboard line, complemented by its first-to-market, low-emissions, direct-injection two-stroke OptiMax technology. Suzuki were the first with a fuel-injected 4-stroke (the DF60/70), in 1998. As for OMC, they went through new ownership and followed the directinjection 2-stroke pathway. This eventually contributed in no small way to their final demise.

DIESEL OUTBOARDS

W

hile the Yanmar D27/36/40 hp 3-cylinder diesel is no longer available, it was the first successful diesel outboard in the market. Today, diesel outboards have a resurgence, such as the Neander DTorque 111 (50hp), manufactured by Neander GmbH in Germany. At 175 kg, the 50 hp DTorque is far from light. Still, if, as has been mooted, the manufacturers are eventually able to raise the output to 70 hp without increasing either size or weight, then new market opportunities are assured. However, newcomers in the market are the Swedish-built OXE, available in 125-300 hp outputs and the U.K. based Cox Powertrain with their CXO 300hp engine. This unit is listed as weighing 380 kg for the 25” XL shaft version, but again, and as per the OXE, the weight will not be a significant factor on the types of boats to which the engine will be fitted. Both the Cox and OXE and Neander diesel outboards have revolutionised outboard diesel technology, and there is more to come in the future.

GYRO STABILISERS

T

wenty-five years ago if you wanted a stabiliser for your boat, you had the choice of fins or ‘flopper stoppers’. Although gyros have been around since 1743, it wasn’t until reasonably recently that they started appearing in pleasure yachts. Around 2000, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (now renamed Tohmei) teamed up with Ferretti Group with an exclusive agreement to put their gyros into the company’s branded motor yachts. Over time the market started to accept the gyro and other manufacturers like Seakeeper and Quick entered the market. In recent years the focus has been on developing more compact and lighter units that can be used on smaller craft like trailer boats. Mounted anywhere in a boat’s hull, gyroscopes will significantly reduce a boat’s roll and are now small and light enough for larger trailer boats.

DRUM WINCHES

W

hen we published the first issue of Propeller magazine in May 1996, drum winches were almost unheard of. While In 1995, Australian Dean Forster pioneered the trailer boat drum winch, it took over five years to found it's way into mainstream trailer boating. And while drum winches were not a new concept, Forster perfected the application for small boats. His award-winning company Stressfree Marine is one of the world leaders in the manufacture and design of drum winches. While the first trailer boat drum winches were seen as cumbersome arrangements mounted on the foredeck, today that has all changed. They did a great job, but they looked ugly and in many ways were very agricultural. The idea was right, but the profile needed some refinement. It wasn't too long before someone had the bright idea of recessing the drum winch into the anchor locker and below the deck profile. All of a sudden, the drum winch gained acceptance, especially amongst the alloy boat manufacturers. The benefit they had over the fibreglass builders is they could easily adapt the anchor locker to accept the size of a drum winch and electric motor. Today there are over a dozen manufacturers and over 40 models to choose from.

oft plastics found their origins in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with small worms and grubs being moulded from hard rubber. The stiff rubber used and the basic shapes produced did not allow modern soft plastics’ flexible action and effectiveness to be observed. In 1967, the first of the contemporary era soft plastic baits was released and by the early to mid-1980s, there were many new entrants into the market. In the past 20 odd years, the soft bait market has boomed, and now we have a wide choice of colour, shapes and sizes. Today soft baits have changed how many of us go fishing and have become a standard item in the tackle box. If you don’t like the smell or handling pillies or squid, then soft baits are the way to go.

ALLOY HARDTOPS

U

nquestionably, Kiwi alloy boat builders and designers lead the world when it comes to the style, the look, the practicality of the fully enclosed or semi-enclosed hardtop. It’s now many years since the first hardtop boats appeared and we started to get used to the idea of what they could offer. Early exponents of the hardtop, such as Ramco, promoted the serious fisherman’s all-weather boating aspects. Their Ramco Explorer 760HT, released in the mid-1990s was one of the first big Kiwi hardtop models, and indeed the first hardtop, Editor, Barry Thompson had ever reviewed. In time all major manufacturers followed with their examples. Brands such as Stabicraft, Lazercraft and Southern even followed with fibreglass hardtops as an option. Today, virtually every manufacturer offers hardtops in its range. Some start as low as 5m, but generally anything over around 6-6.5m is considered suitable as a hardtop model.

MARINE MOUNTING SYSTEMS

H

aving a device that enables you to mount your boating accessories on a base support with a universal socket and mounts, has been around now for a few years. The problem of having somewhere to put your cellphone, iPod, fishing rods, a glass of wine, or coffee was first answered by Wanaka based Peter Marshall when he invented the Tallon Socket. Another New Zealand company, Railblaza, came to market in 2010 with a new approach to the universal mounting system. Railblaza began its life as a mounting system for holding things to the back of a quad-bike. Once the initial concept was developed, it was realised that this system had merits in the marine industry. It is now sold on over 50 countries. The Railblaza StarPort mount and the Tallon sockets are continually being improved with new products continually being added. Now at least you have somewhere to put your tinnie when the fish strikes.

BALEX AUTO BOAT LOADER

K

iwi engineers are always thinking of making something better, so when it comes to launching and retrieving your boat, there is probably no easier system than the Balex automatic boat loader. First released in 2016, the Balex Automatic Boat Loader (ABL) automates the launch and retrieval of your trailer boat. You don’t even have to get your feet wet! No more clambering down the slippery boat ramp to attach the winch. No more cranking on the manual winch or slow unreliable electric winching. Simple, easy and hassle-free.

VOLVO PENTA IPS

T

he Volvo Penta IPS was a revolution in marine technology when it was launched in 2005. It was initially seen by many as a system fraught with issues, with its forward-facing propellers. While the very early models did have its detractors, today the IPS system is seen as one of the most efficient and innovative marine propulsion systems ever designed. Today there are over 25000 units in use worldwide. In 2019 Volvo Penta upgraded the IPS, focusing on updating the serviceability, reliability, and performance of its IPS. There are now four basic IPS models available, from the D6-IPS @ 300 - 480hp to the D13-IPS @ 701-1000hp.

AMPHIBIOUS BOATS

I

f there is one boating style that Kiwi’s unquestionably lead the world, it is amphibious boats. Three Kiwi brands, Sealegs (2004), Orion (2012) and Tectrax (2019) have continuously been pioneering the way forward for amphibious boating and in all cases taken it to the world. While all three brands essentially provide the same amphibious system, technically, they each do it differently. Wheelie boats or to give them the more common name, amphibious boats have gone from being on the fringe of boating to more mainstream, and it is three Kiwi companies that are leading the global design and development programme.

e all know the problems that come with batteries, and when it is marine-related, it can be catastrophic. One of the best things to happen in the battery industry in recent years is lithium batteries’ development. Lithium batteries are primary batteries that use lithium to store energy rather than lead. They stand apart from other batteries with their smaller size, lighter weight, greater useable capacity, faster charging and greater cycle life. While they are more expensive than lead acid batteries, when considering their greater useable capacity and far greater cycle life their cost per amp hour of energy delivered is less than traditional lead acid (Flooded, AGM or GEL) batteries. In the marine industry Lithium Ion Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry is primarily used due to its chemical stability and therefore inherent safety compared to other Lithium chemistries. LiFePO4 batteries have a cell voltage of between 3.2 – 3.3V. A 12V nominal battery is typically constructed from 4 cells, whereas a 24V nominal battery is constructed from 8 cells. Aside from the battery cells a correctly designed Lithium battery suitable for marine applications will have integrated cell balancing, to ensure the battery cells remain balanced, and a battery management system (BMS) that manages the battery and connected charge sources to ensure optimal performance from the battery. The marine electrical standards (AS/NZS 3004.2:2014) clearly indicate what features a lithium battery BMS must have to make it compliant for marine use.

INFLATABLE LIFEJACKETS

W

hile inflatable live preservers have been around since the Mae West’s invention in 1928, it is only in the past 20 or so years that they have become the life jacket of choice. While materials and design have changed over the years, the inflatable life jacket’s fundamental technology and purpose remain the same. Inflatable life vests, or personal flotation devices (PFDs), are different from conventional life jackets in that they’re intended to provide extra buoyancy for confident swimmers rather than to save the life of an unconscious person in the water. They are more comfortable to wear, give greater freedom of movement, and inflate manually or automatically. New Zealand company, Hutchwilco released its first inflatable jacket in 1988. Still, in 2006 they had a major redesigned of the classic lifejacket and introduced their Super Comfort Series which took the inflatable jacket to a whole new level. Since then continuous improvements and features have established the Hutchwilco Super Comfort Series as the countries most popular inflatable PFD.

hy New Zealand still has two standard tow ball sizes is strange. We still have the 1” 7/8 as well as the 50mm ball. You would have thought that since we changed from imperial to metric back in 1969, the Transport Dept would have had time to phase out the old imperial ball size gradually. But no, it is still very much alive and well. There have been some ingenious multi-fit systems to counter the mismatched ball and coupling sizes, either by way of adjustable tow ball sizes to couplings that can be used for both sizes. Kiwi based company’s CM Trailers and Trojan were amongst the first to come out with multi-fit couplings and quick change tow balls.

JOYSTICK DOCKING STEERING

16

I

f ever a product developed over recent years made docking a big boat less stressful and easy, it has to be joystick docking. Now you can bring a 20m flybridge cruiser effortlessly alongside the fueling jetty or into your marina berth, without panicking about scraping a pole or rubbing up against another boat. Joystick steering has been around for some time in larger non-trailerable boats, and some of the best examples are from Volvo Penta, ZF, Yacht Controller and Dockmate. Now both Mercury Marine and Yamaha can offer joystick docking for outboards. However, recently, Volvo Penta went one better with the release of, the world’s first fully-integrated assisted docking system. The assisted docking system consists of the joystick that controls the steering input and the GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System antenna to know the exact position and heading. The Assisted Docking system integrates a software layer, with the GPS and IPS for a complete package including HMI (human-machine interface) at the helm.

INTERCEPTORS

L

17

ike trim tabs, interceptors are designed to trim a boat, but unlike trim tabs hanging off the transom horizontally, interceptors work by dropping vertically. While once the domain of larger vessels, they are now used extensively on trailer boats, especially the Zipwake brand. The first Zipwake Dynamic Trim Control system, the Series S, was launched in 2014. V Volvo Penta’s, Boat Trim System (BTS) and Humphrees have developed a wide range of models, especially suited to boats over 10m. The main advantage of an interceptor system is the smaller blade and the speed at which it can deploy and retract. Interceptors move from fully retracted to fully extended in as quick as 1.5 seconds. That’s four to five times faster than trim tabs, which typically take 6 to 8 seconds

PROPSPEED COATING

B

efore a very smart Kiwi company, came up with Propspeed, there was very little on the market that you could apply to your underwater running gear to stop marine growth. Propspeed is the original propeller and running gear foul-release coating system, specially formulated to prevent marine growth from bonding to metal surfaces below the waterline. Released in the early 90’s Propspeed will last at least a year, or even two, although this depends on what sort of marine environment your boat is moored in, the water temperature, and how often you use it. Propspeed is now the market leader in marine growth protection for underwater metal surfaces.

ENGINE FLUSHING SYSTEMS

B

ack in the day when we needed to flush our outboard, we slid on a pair of ‘ears’ around the lower unit water intake or used a canvas bag full of freshwater. Another common method was to squirt some dishwashing fluid into the hose line and let it circulate through the engine. Today it’s a little easier with most modern outboards having a flushing port on the side. However, it wasn’t until 2003 when Salt-Away, a new product made in the U.S., was discovered that we could get serious about flushing all the nasties from our outboard internals. Salt-Away, like a number of its competitors today, such as DSalt is 100% safe on all surfaces, non-toxic and biodegradable. Both are also ideal for spraying on your boat to remove any salt deposits. 78

MULTI FUNCTION DISPLAYS

W

hen it comes to electronics, nothing has seen more significant adaptations, upgrades, and functionality changes as the Multi-Function Display (MFD). When we launched Propeller Magazine in May 1996, the basic purchase was a fishfinder, that included, or not, a chart, with a 9” screen considered large. While the integration of other functions such as radar and GPS were starting to be available, a fishfinder was more about reading the bottom shape. Black and white were still popular, and the colour renditions were mostly average. How things have changed with MFD’s today still as compact as they were, although 9” to 12” is considered the norm in trailer boats, and for larger boats run-up to multi-screens 26” and bigger. They can include just about every conceivable navigational, safety and entertainment programme and offer exceptional colours and clarity. And yes they even show fish.

NYALIC COATING

N

yalic is a transparent surface protectant that has been used extensively on alloy boats. Made in the USA and distributed in N.Z. by Nyalic NZ Ltd for 25 years, it is a nylonic, crystal clear polymeric resin coating that provides years of protection against chemical, environmental and ultraviolet corrosion on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, galvanised, anodised, powder coated and painted surfaces. It also works well on plastics, fibreglass, concrete, stone and masonry and even on wood but it is on the unpainted aluminium trailer boats that it has proven most popular in New Zealand. A boating application has the benefits of being highly corrosion-resistant, impermeable, will not crack or peel, impact-resistant, and non-chip. It also leaves a quality finish to an otherwise bland unpainted alloy hull.

SOFTRIDER & SUSPENSION SEATS

W

hile early trailer boats all had permanently fixed seats, with no sliders and a swivelling setup was a luxury, that has all changed. When David Goldsack introduced his first Softrider suspension seats, it was, as they say, a gamechanger. Not only did they provide a softer and more cushioning ride, but they swivelled, could be raised and lowered and went forward and aft. Luxury. At last, a seat that you get position to suit your body size, rather than be forced into an uncomfortable position because the seat was fixed to the cockpit floor. The Softrider brand is now owned and manufactured in Hamilton, New Zealand by Hi Tech Plastics. If you are serious about wanting a soft ride, you can always consider shock mitigation technology or give it its better known term, suspension seating. Developed over the years for military and commercial applications, they are now very much part of the marine seating business. They are also not inexpensive when it comes to seating, but they do a fantastic job in providing a soft ride in all conditions. Several local and overseas brands are available, such as Scot seats from Hamilton-based HiTech Plastics and the Kiwi built Shark.

MARINE STEREOS

B

ack in the ‘60s, entertainment onboard would likely consist of an AM transistor radio, the aerial up and the signal coming in and out as the boat swung on the anchor. The ‘60s saw the advent of tape, encapsulated in a type of cassette, with the introduction of 8 track and later compact cassette players on the market. In 1983 Alpine introduced a marine-specific radio cassette the 7235M (Marine). Still, it wasn’t until 2001 with the Apple iPod’s release that things started to hot up in the marine entertainment market. During the mid-2000s Sir Peter Maire acquired Fusion, a car audio company that would lead the world in marine stereo systems. Other big names to develop new product through the past few years specifically for the marine market are Clarion and J.L. Audio. Stereo systems and speakers are now affordable, durable and practical and have brought sounds to everyone, no matter what size your boat.

FAUX TEAK

I

f you like the classic look of teak on your decks and floor, but don’t want to go to the expense of real teak, then maybe you should take a look at one of the many synthetic equivalents. Teak decking has been used in the construction of boats forever. However, this is not something that the average trailer boat owner would have on his 5-8m boat but is still acceptable on larger cruisers over 10m. With the advent of faux or synthetic teak, you can have the look of teak, but at a fraction of the cost and weight. Plus faux teak can be pre-cut on a computer and glued into place in a few hours for a fraction of the cost of real teak. There are quite a few different brands on the market, such as U-Dek, Flexiteek, Permateek, Seadek, Nuteak, Marinedeck 2000 and Nautikflor. In the main, they are all constructed from either lightweight closed-cell foam or composite polymer based materials that are UV stable, offering a high level of comfort underfoot and excellent traction in all conditions. With the considerable cost savings involved and environmental issues, these deck alternatives are worth considering. Although each of the products gives a “teak deck look” there are differences.

UNDERWATER LIGHTS

S

ince Underwater Lights introduced one of the first recognised underwater lights for the recreational boating market in 1991, the market has expanded with over a dozen international manufacturers. Deep-Sea released its first recreational underwater lights in 2003, and UK-based company Ocean LED and Australian based Aqualuma released their first underwater lights in 2005. Aqualuma has grown to become one of the world leaders in underwater light technology and continue to develop new and exciting products. They helped kickstart the evolution of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for underwater lights in Australia and New Zealand. Other leading brand names now include Quick, Lumitec, Bluefin, Perko, Cantalupi and Sea Vision. As the name suggests, underwater lights are lights that work underwater, so obviously they are installed below the waterline for optimum heat dissipation and lighting effect. As well as looking good at night, they are perfect fish attractors, especially squid.

The Finseeker 220 CC is the smallest of current four model Finseeker range and it comes loaded. Buy this boat and you only need to add you own tackle and bait. Everything else comes with it.

K

iwi’s are very familiar with centre console boats, but unlike the US, they are almost exclusively aluminium or RIBs. Back in the day, leading New Zealand fibreglass brands such as Bonito, Buccaneer and Rayglass, all dabbled in producing a centre console model, but they were not big sellers and just as quickly were discontinued. This left the way open for the aluminium and more recently the RIB builders to corner that segment of the market. As no local grp builder offers a centre console in their range, it has left a gap in the market for the likes of Finseeker and other US brands. When Terry Elmsly, the importer for Crownline Boats, the manufacturer if the Finseeker range, ordered his first Finseeker he already had it presold, so the signs were encouraging that Kiwis would warm to this style of fibreglass boat. “I am really pleased with the interest in the Finseeker range and have more arriving prior to the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show”, says Terry. He added that potential customers he had spoken to after seeing the Finseeker 220 CC, were blown away by the standard of finish and the amount of gear that was already in the boat. “If you are looking for a serious fibreglass trailerable fishing boat then the Finseeker range has it covered, from both centre console to bowrider models. We provide plenty of amenities for the serious fisherman along with the comfort and style for the family”, added Terry. Standard features include, four Wet Sounds splashproof speakers, handheld freshwater transom shower (cold), LED cockpit lighting, raw water washdown, two aerated baitwell with clear-acrylic access windows, rod storage compartments (built-in port & starboard with stainless steel toe rails), and Kicker stereo.

FISHABILITY

The 220 CC is fishable from bow to stern, so there is no wasted space. The centre console for example is certainly set up for fisherman with space for a pair of 12” MFDs. We had a pair of Garmin 9” screens in our test boat. All the switch indicators are clearly marked and accessible along the base of the flat dash panel. A Kicker stereo is easily at hand as are all the controls for items such as the Lewmar capstan and Lenco tabs. As you find in most American boats a tilt steering wheel is standard. This allows you to have the wheel in the position that suits you. The double helm seat is adjustable with the base folding

right back out of the way or in a bolstered position, depending on if you are driving seated or standing. In line with the robust and solid feel of the boat, the T-Top is constructed of durable solid piping, complete with heavy duty plexiglass screen with an air vent on the top and soft bimini or solid grp hardtop. Under the flip up bolster is a removeable chilly bin, with a bait station aft complete with one of two livebait tanks, tackle drawers and more rod holders. In total there are 16 rod holders that come with the boat. Didn’t I already say this is a serious fishing boat!

Finseeker have made sure that if you are chasing a big fish around the boat, such as an angry Trev or Kahawai, you have room to move. Foot space either side of the console is plentiful and there are no obstructions to catch you toes on. There are also two large fish bins in the cockpit sole, with electric macerator pumps to empty them. I liked the stainless steel toe kick spaces and thighhigh padded coaming sides, should you need to brace yourself when playing a fish.

level with the transom area receiving special attention. To starboard is a wide walk-through to the aft deck which sees a telescopic ladder and a wet locker. On the port side is a second live bait tank and there are four shotgun rod holders, cupholders, plus a handheld freshwater transom shower. Again Finseeker have thought about how to best use the space between the helm seat and the transom, by fitting a fold-up transom bench seat, so it’s there when required and out of the way when fishing.

Check out the wide side walkways and high coamings.

Two large fish bins in the cockpit sole, have with electric macerator pumps to empty them.

The bow area is designed as a multi-function space to suit the fisherman and also as an entertaining area. Central to the U-shape squabs is an optional infill that turns the space into a reasonable sized sunpad, complete with drop-in backrests for forward facing lounging. You also have the option of a drop-in table so it’s a great space to have lunch and relax. There’s also plenty of stainless steel cup holders. The cushions can be removed if you intend to use this space as a casting platform. There is storage under the squabs, as well as in a deep floor locker. Finseeker have really maximised on the space and have added a flip-down seat in the front of the centre console. But wait there’s more. Hidden behind that and inside the console is a separate head compartment, complete with a Dometic Portapotti. Not something I would expect to see in a centre console of this size. Down aft the attention to detail reaches another PowerboatMagazine.co.nz

OUTBOARD ONLY

Finseeker utilise a similar hull shape to the Crownline boats, with an emphasis on rough water handling as much as performance. It has a sharp forward entry, a 20° dead rise and large freeboard. It runs what the company refers to as their Gen 2 performance fast tab hull but also has a Carolina flared bow which is designed for big blue water offshore fishing. The steep 7.5 deg reverse chine angle really rolls the waves and spray down, so you stay dry in the rough water. Power options are 175-225hp, with our 220 CC fitted with a Suzuki 200. I managed to squeeze over 38 knots, with the Suzuki 200 running at 5900 rpm. A 225hp outboard would increase that by about 2-3 knots. My test day was calm so apart from some boat wakes I didn’t get the chance to try it in the rougher water. Given that it has a 20 deg hull and weighs in at around 2600 kgs, I’m picking it would hold its own. I have to admit that even in the calm water it had a very solid and robust feel to it. The hull hangs on tight in turns and the extra wide chines push the water down and keep the boat dry. Time to plane was under 4 seconds.

MORE TO COME

Finseeker’s 220 CC maybe one of only four models available right now, but the company has plans to produce 13 models from 6m to 9m in a variety of styles, and all with an emphasis on fishing. The number one goal for Finseeker will always remain to deliver a highly sophisticated, high level fishable boat that provides everything a fisherman needs, but also with enough comforts to suit the family boating lifestyle. With the Finseeker 220 CC I feel they have achieved that, and I can’t wait to try out one of the larger models. A day trip to Great Barrier would be a nice start.

NEW GEN TEXT BY FREDDY FOOTE

HAINES HUNTER SF635

It’s not often that Haines Hunter builds a new boat, but when they do, it’s worth taking note. So when they announced in the last quarter of 2020 that they had developed an all-new model for the 6m segment, the market took note. Freddy Foote jumps aboard the all-new SF635.

I

’ve always been a Haines Hunter fan. I have been lucky enough to do all of my leisure boating aboard a SF535 that we’ve had in the family since new. It’s been a fantastic boat for general family boating, like all Haines Hunter models it performs well in the rough, and of course has that famous Haines build quality. So when the opportunity came to get aboard the allnew SF635, I couldn’t wait. The all-new SF635 is essentially a replacement for the workhorse of the Haines Hunter range, the SF600. While, a wildly popular boat with family boaties and serious fishermen alike, it was time for an update, and was in need of modernisation. But Haines asked themselves the question, do we try upgrade it, or start afresh?

Rather than trying to refurbish an old model, steps were taken to develop and all-new model, with a revised and fresh look, with modern construction methods and modern materials whilst still retaining, according to Haines Hunter that famous build quality and finish that the brand is renowned for. And so, after an extensive 24-month development process, Haines Hunter unveiled its new 635 model in September last year, in the SF635 soft top configuration we see here, with a 635 hardtop model to follow this year. Haines Hunter owners are a passionate and diehard bunch, so much so that over 200 potential buyers pre-registered their interest in the new model, with a number of confirmed orders now on the books and in build at the Ellerslie factory and many eagerly waiting for the hardtop version to be finished. The SF635 has a hull length of 6.35m with an overall length of 6.76m and still carries the brands legendary 21-degree deep-vee via an all-new hull from the design team. “It’s a complete new model, it’s bigger than the 600. Comparing it to a 600, the 635 carries a little more beam on the chine aft, and it still retains the 21-degree vee, and is very similar in the entry – it will still deliver that legendary ride that we’ve been famous for while being stable at rest,” says Haines Hunter CEO Denis Kendall.

MARCH / APRIL 2021

|

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

The hull is hand laid and according to Haines Hunter this results in superior strength, rigidity and longevity. This new 635 also features a moulded composite structural floor that’s bonded to the hull, creating watertight chambers that deliver reserve buoyancy. The decks and bulkheads use a foam core sandwiched between an inner and outer skin. This technique reduces weight compared to other construction methods – with the benefit of improving fuel economy without compromising on strength and durability. While an all-new model, Haines Hunter haven’t forgotten what has made their boat a favourite with Kiwi boaties for generations, they’ve added a reverse sheer giving it a modern and stylish look without losing the classic Haines profile and on the inside is still packed with renowned Haines Hunter features. “The 6.0m range is important to us, this boat has evolved from demand and feedback from dealers, and the customers.”

Classic Haines Hunter Layout

Stepping aboard the SF635, I was pleased to see the general layout and seating configuration has been retained. To the portside, is the Haines Hunter King/Queen style configuration. Haines Hunter have modernised the seats themselves slightly to make them even more comfortable and they now look even more ‘race car’ like with ample padding and support to keep you snug in the seat when underway. Lift up the seats and there is a cavernous storage locker

The layout is multi functional, great for family boating, or fishing alike.

Plenty of headroom and additional storage in the forward cabin.

that provides plenty of room to be able to access large and bulky items. To starboard at the helm is a single pedestal seat that is adjustable forward and aft. This seat is now mounted on a base, which provides storage underneath for an Icey-Tek chilly bin. The chilly bin can slide in and out, and can be opened by using just half the lid. Handy when you quickly just want to reach in and grab a cold drink. There is squab on top of the Icey-Tek, which provides an additional passenger seat. In the aft of the cockpit are removable bin seats for passengers. Simply slide them out of the way when not in use under the transom and it frees up a sizeable amount of space for fishing and allows you to fish right into the corners of the boat. Lift up the back supports of the seats themselves, and it provides access to additional storage and where the battery is located.

On this boat, hull #1, Ultralon flooring is finished on the floor throughout. While this is an option, you can also opt for domed clip in carpet. There are two through-coaming stainless steel rod holders per side and additional four-rod holders across the transom. Haines Hunter have raised the side shelves up off the floor, giving plenty of toe room. Across the transom there is provision for a bait board, which mounts via two poles. Remove this, and there is a separate hole to mount a ski pole. Access into the boat is via a walk through in the port corner. And there is an option to put in a live bait tank here. Lots of extra niceties have also been added throughout. Haines have elected to install more modern and stylish stainless steel pull out cleats, which add a nice finish to the exterior of the boat. There are plenty of sizeable cup holders or what they should now be called ‘bottle holders’ – large enough to accommodate modern drinking bottles. And there are USB and 12V sockets on hand to keep devices charged and there are handy stepped side shelves either side of the helm area that stops items like keys and phone sliding backwards while underway. Speaking of modern tech, the SF635 is packed full of it. The dash is eye catching and stylish. Yamaha’s CL5 touch-screen engine instrument display is mounted beautifully into the acrylic fascia, while above there is an enormous 12-inch Simrad NSS evoIIIS display. Matching the Simrad is a Total Scan Transducer, that features structure scan, down scan, and high and low chirp. It sits on the centreline at the transom for best visibility through the water column. HAINES HUNTER SF635

The dash is stylish and clean, the digital instruments flushmounted into the acrylic fascia.

The SF635 is rated from 150hp-200hp options. The 175hp Yamaha fitted here is good for 42 knots.

The Targa top can drop down and fold away for garage storage.

Additionally there is also a Fusion stereo system that sits below, while the Zipwake interceptor controls are down to the left of the steering wheel. Various switches are either side of the dash with a Uniden VHF also fitted. Forward in the cabin, there is plenty of headroom, more so than on the previous 600 model. There is provision for an electric flush toilet should you wish, and the addition of an infill squab makes a sizeable berth if you need. Add to that there is additional side shelf storage, and further storage lockers against the forward bulkhead.

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

Rated for outboards from 150hp to 200hp, our test boat was powered by Yamaha 175hp, which seemed to be the perfect match for the hull. The motor was responsive and lively, and with calm conditions on Auckland harbour we managed to see close to 42 knots. We found a comfortable cruise of 24 knots at 3500rpm, which gave the best fuel economy from the 175hp Yamaha fourstroke. Using 20.5L/H which combined with the 195L underfloor fuel tank would give the SF635 a range of 200 nautical miles. Flat out we hit 42 knots at 5500rpm, with the Yamaha using 62 L/H. Seated at the helm, there was great visibility forward, and enough headroom with the targa bimini fitted for me to stand. We ran the boat with the clears fitted to the top of the windshield, should you wish they are easily removable, and a viewing window can be unzipped immediately in front of the driver if you didn’t want to take it all off. The stainless targa bimini can collapse down if you want to store the boat in a garage. Zipwake trim tabs were installed, and can be used manually or in its fully automatic mode as we used them on our test day. The Zipwake system is fantastic, and takes so much of the guess work out of trimming the boat and makes the driving experience that much more enjoyable. The hull was quiet and held on in the turns. Though we didn’t experience any super rough water on the Hauraki Gulf during out test day, the ride feels soft, dry, and will deliver that famous Haines Hunter ride when you need it. Overall, a fantastic boat, and Haines Hunter have a great job producing an all-new model. Keeping the core of what makes a Haines a Haines and I’m sure will keep the brand a favourite with Kiwi boaties for generations to come.

A Seakeeper 3, neatly installed under the helm seat provides the required stability for this Seavee 37.

In Part Two of a two-part series on gyros, we look at the AC options. In the previous issue we looked at DC gyros that were suitable for the larger trailer boat and small cruiser market, where batteries could handle the power requirements. However, when it comes to the bigger units a generator is generally required and that’s not a common option in a trailer boat. In this article, we look at AC gyros (some of the smaller units are also DC) for the big boat market.

The heart of a Seakeeper

Gyros first started appearing in pleasure yachts around 2000 when Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (now renamed Tohmei) teamed up with Ferretti Group with an exclusive agreement to put their gyros into the company’s branded motor yachts. Over time the market started to accept the gyro and other manufacturers like Seakeeper and Quick entered the market. The stability of a boat is influenced by several factors, such as the hull shape, the displacement, the mass distribution, the gyro installation position and sea conditions. The rolling motion is the most dangerous since it affects the vessel stability and it’s therefor the one on which the first reduction studies have been carried out. More overside rolling is the main cause of sea sickness, especially in case of long waves. Rolling is the oscillation of the boat around its longitudinal axis. Since vessels are much longer than larger, as a consequence side oscillation scan be felt much more. All gyros consists of three fundamental parts; flywheel, gimbal and dampening system. The flywheel’s size and speed of rotation determine a factor called angular momentum. The gimbal allows the flywheel to rotate around an axis perpendicular to the spin axis. The velocity at which the gimbal rotates (precession), in reaction to the boats roll, is a factor called angular velocity. The Damping system controls the rate at which the gimbal is allowed to precess. Damping systems can be passive or active depending on manufacturer. A single or multi gyro set-up doesn’t have to be on the centreline and in fact can go just about anywhere convenient. When installing a gyro it does pay to take into consideration the boat’s centre of gravity and balance. Deeper in the boat is probably best. You also need to ensure there is plenty of ventilation if installed in a confined space and because they are not totally silent it’s advisable to install in a soundproof space, e.g. engine room. 98

You also need to ensure that the selected place is steady enough to transfer the generated torque to the hull. The primary structural beams are a good choice. Last thing you want is a wayward gyro spinning at thousands of rpm detaching its mounts and exiting the boat through the side of the hull. There are three recognised gyro brands available in New Zealand/Australia; Seakeeper, Quick and Tohmei. As discussed in the previous issue they all do the same job of stabilising your boat, but each has a different take on why their systems work so efficiently. While Part One went into a lot more detail about how each system functions, we thought it would be prudent to offer a condensed version to at least understand the principles.

SEAKEEPER

Seakeeper promote angular momentum as the true measure for how effective a gryo is. Angular momentum is a force and measured in Newton-meter-seconds, or N-m-s, that determines the total amount of torque available over time. Greater angular momentum indicates a higher roll reduction potential for gyroscopic stabilisers. The Seakeeper 18 (18,000 Nm of angular momentum) is more powerful than the Seakeeper 1 (1,000 Nm). The faster a gyroscope precesses, the higher its peak torque value. However, a faster precession speed significantly reduces the amount of time the peak torque can be applied Seakeeper point out that a wave going under a boat is what is what they refer to as a wave period doesn’t happen instantaneously. Seakeeper say that because of this, the most effective use of a gyroscope’s angular momentum is to spread the torque over a period of time that matches the wave period.

Seakeeper offer eleven models in either AC & DC variants.

6 are the same footprint, but the Seakeeper 5 costs less for less stabilizing power. Most people don’t opt for multiple units unless they need to so it pays to but the one that is best suited to your boat. Seakeeper name their units by the Nm of angular momentum so if you see a Seakeeper 9, then you know it has 9000 Nm of angular momentum as a Seakeeper 26 will have 26000 Nm. The Seakeeper 35 is a beast, with 35000Nm of angular momentum, weighs in at 1778kg and is designed for boats up to 90 tonne, with an LOA of more than 26m.

Seakeeper’s range comprises eleven AC models, if you include the three HD units that are specifically designed for commercial and military vessels. Add in the three DC units and the total is 14. The smallest AC unit, the Seakeeper 5 weighs in at 395 kg and is designed for 12m – 14m boats with a displacement of up to 18 tonne. The Seakeeper 6 packs a punch in a compact, efficient package suitable for boats between 15m -16m, and up to 22 tonne. There are a lot of factors that go into determining that one 14m vessel should have a Seakeeper 5 while another should opt for the Seakeeper 6. For example, the Seakeeper 5 and Seakeeper

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has a long history in the development of Gyro’s for stabilisation purposes. From 1981 to 1987 MHI developed a gyro for space station stabilisation. This system obviously had to be built to very high standards and be very reliable. From 1991-2000 MHI conducted various studies and trials on passive, active, vacuum chambers, helium filled chambers etc with the goal of commercialising the gyro product for other uses e.g. vessel stabilisation. The previous developments and the results of the studies resulted in the development of a robust and reliable passive design. The marine products were recently rebranded Tohmei. The Tohmei Anti Rolling Gyro stabiliser (ARG) is a passive gyro stabiliser system based on simplicity with no highpressure water and hydraulic hose systems, and with no computer controls. Their passive control does not require an electric control unit, resulting in few failures and a high level of safety. Also, the passive system does not require any regular maintenance other than visual inspections from time to time. Of all the gyros they are probably the least complicated and have an excellent reputation for performance, robustness and durability. The ARG is designed to cool itself with air flow in the unit generated by a spinning flywheel. There are no external water hook-ups, no hipressure oil lines and no exposed moving parts making it safer and more reliable for everyday use. The ARG starts with the flick of a switch and works efficiently at trolling and zero speeds. Tohmei have a five-models line up with the ARG50T (DC Powered) and ARG65T (AC Powered) for smaller vessels to 10Tons of displacement. The three larger models, ARG175T (17500 Nm of torque), ARG250T (25000 Nm of torque) and the top of the line ARG375T (37500 Nm of torque) are all AC only and destined for larger motor vessels. Multiple units can be installed where more anti-rolling torque is required than a single unit can provide. Auckland based Motor Yacht Service Centre have installed more than 10 Tohmei gyro’s in vessels ranging from 48’ to 72’. Legacy Marine in Whakatane have selected Tohmei ARG product for their Legacy 70.

-with over a decade of experience of creating stable situations on pleasure and commercial craft all over the world.

QUICK

Quick promote the torque or maximum torque as the main contributor to roll reduction and have a number of unique features. Firstly they are the only gyro with a vertically spinning mass (not horizontal). This generates the same anti-roll torque / output torque as traditional horizontally spinning gyros but in a simpler smaller way. The side bearings “share” the weight of the mass as opposed to the bottom bearing doing all the hard work. This means a comparatively heavier mass that spins at lower RPM can achieve the same anti-roll performance. Quick claim that the unique vertically spinning mass also means reduced track deviation even in big following or beam seas. They are all air cooled (not water cooled) bearings which means there are no water pumps to operate and maintain, no risk of electrolysis, no anodes to replace, no risk of air getting into the cooling pumps and causing them to stop working. Australasian distributor for the Quick gyro, Pierluigi Gambacorti (Gineico) points out that one of major benefits of the Quick DC gyros is their fast spool up and simple switch off and walk away spool down. Quick have just released two new models, MC2 X10 and the MC2 X75, to compliment their existing nine model AC range. The MC2 X75 is Quick’s highest output unit with an output torque of 75000 Nm and designed for the superyacht market. The MC2 X10 fits in between the MC2 X7 (6678 Nm of torque and the MC2 X13, with a rated output of 12850 NM. Overall Quick have sixteen models covering the DC and AC range with units suitable for the largest trailer boats to mini superyachts. Their eleven AC models range in anti-rolling torque output from 5560 Nm to 55882 Nm and overall, they also have the smallest footprint are generally the lightest and the patented vertical spinning mass in the MC²X makes the units more compact. The smallest of the AC units, the MC2 X5 weighs in at 255 kg and with a

base that measures not much more than 1/2sqm it is well suited to larger trailer boats or small cruisers where a generator is an option. The X13 AC has been designed to be installed on smaller size boats and is perfect for larger centre console or day boats. However, if you want something with a little more grunt, then there is the X16 (16359Nm) and X19 (18700Nm), which are all housed in the same compact shroud. The quality and performance of the Cape50 bodes well for this first entry into the competitive luxury cruiser market.

P

assion, it’s infectious and can drive the quest for excellence. Melbourne’s Steve Campbell has passion. In spades. The master shipwright has some 30 years of hands-on experience and has applied his considerable nautical talents, via his company Composites Constructions, to produce the stunning new Cape50, a motor yacht built with the latest state-of-the-art processes and composite materials. The Cape50 exudes style, Steve managing to blend timeless seafaring tradition with contemporary nautical chic, and then throwing in some modern Nordic design and Euro flair to create an enchanting cruiser that loves to entertain and get up and boogie like a rock star. The Cape50 has elements of a traditional Maine lobster boat with its blunt stem and tumble-home transom, but it’s interwoven with the latest European trends in slender, full-chine hulls with a steep flared entry. She has a sweeping Carolina-style sheer line with big, high shoulders that straightens as it flows into the long and inviting rear deck. Her cabin lines, mouldings and windows, combined with a gorgeous colour palate, enhance the overall aesthetic. Add to it the latest power, drive, electronics, accessories and furnishing, and the result is simply drop-dead gorgeous. “When you’re a 30-year master shipwright, you know how to plan well, select the best people and materials, and then you and your team can craft something special  – that ‘later in life child’, if you like,” explained Steve. “It takes time, but you know and believe in yourself, your team and your craft. It’s 100 per cent effort and accuracy all of the time, or not at all.” While the final design is his own, Steve worked with naval architects and premium suppliers to perfect the concept, including the use of premium paints, and a warm and friendly interior and cockpit with highlights of teak and American ash.

sandwich, maximising the inherent strength while reducing weight. Steve has many years of experience creating and developing racing yachts and is a leader in such technologies. The beautiful metallic finishes are Awlcraft Xeon Blue on the hull and champagne gold on the saloon roof, with polar white inserts between. The aesthetics are enhanced with a strong 32mm 316-grade marine stainless-steel bow and side rails offset by black window frames. The Cape50 has a spacious and efficient blend of outdoor and indoor spaces, which include a teaklaid cockpit and a rear platform, an inviting saloon and twin-stateroom accommodation. Whether it is an evening soirée, beachside parking for the gang, a quiet brunch in a secluded backwater or maybe a spot of fishing, the cockpit is roomy enough for all activities. Combine it with the large rear platform, rear door, folding boarding ladder and a concealed barbecue on the outer transom, plus the sunlounge on the foredeck, and you could host a party for a cricket team. The cockpit also features an L-shaped rear lounge, moulded chest fridge, and a utility/utensils cabinet, and is finished with superb natural teak, including a most attractive display as a head liner under the substantial roof awning that provides plenty of shade. hatches providing easy access to the engine bays and Volvo Penta IPS drives. The Cape50 flows beautifully from deck to saloon, with a large door and café-style windows bringing the outside in, and the inside out.

INVITING

I find the saloon’s inviting and uncluttered layout exceptionally appealing. There’s plenty of natural light and visibility from the array of windows and the large, two-piece curved windscreen. There’s even a pair of electric vent windows for the driver and passenger. The port side features a long L-shaped lounge furnished in stylish, yet hard-wearing linen from Warwick Fabrics. Underneath we find plenty of general storage. To starboard is the helm up in front, with galley behind, all displayed in a refreshing array of surfaces including American ash laminates with Corian benchtops, faux timber floor, white upholstered head liners, black leather cross-stitched helmsman seat and trims, with some carbonfibre features and premium fixtures and fittings. I simply loved that the galley shows true nautical intent, including neatly raised edges to prevent spillage off the benchtops. There’s plenty of flat surface for preparation, plus a deep sink with hot/cold mixer and a flush-mounted two-burner induction cooktop. Features also include a very

handy pop-up pantry in the corner behind the helm seat, and a large 44in pop-up television in the rear corner of the saloon. There’s a 120lt Isotherm fridge beneath the helm module, and a microwave and plenty of utensil drawers in the stylish cabinetry. The helm’s high dash still allows plenty of forward vision, especially considering the nature of the minimal-deadrise hull design matched with pod drives that create very little bow rise on acceleration, which is easily compensated for with Zipwake trim tabs. Twin Garmin 16in multifunction screens dominate the dash and are linked to the sounder, radar, autopilot, engines and CZone digital networking, integrating full boat control and diagnostics. The helm has a sporty leather-cloaked steering wheel and the joystick controls, while the neat console houses a Fusion sound system, Garmin VHF, a micro-touch switch panel for the window actuators, the anchor winch and other ancillaries.

SPARE THE STAIRS

One thing I love about saloon-style boats is the lack of stairs. Step down just two stairs in the forward companionway and you find the bathroom to port, with the master stateroom up in the bow, and the guest/kids quarters on your right. The accommodation might not be that elaborate, but it’s a great example of the alluring lobster boat theme – it’s very comfortable, inviting and stylish, boasting an attractive array of timber veneers, lush upholstery, neat headliners and teak trims. The bathroom is very neat and reasonably roomy

with a fully moulded white capsule, Planus Artic electric toilet, a good array of mirror-fronted overheads, an ebony carbon fibre benchtop with matching basin, stylish tapware and fittings, plus a reasonably large separate shower with seat and teak features. The master features a queen-sized island bed with pillow-top mattress. Underneath is drawer storage to the front and a cavity in the bow. There’s a 30in TV and entertainment system, two wardrobes, and a good array of lighting options. The crew quarters has an extended single at the base with a smaller bunk on top, wardrobes and storage options, and an overhead ventilation hatch. A Kolher 11kVa generator and shore power keeps all systems well-powered, including the 10,000 BTU air-conditioning in the cabins and 16,000 BTU in the saloon. Other electronic features include a Lewmar electric windlass, Hella LED marine lighting for both the interior and exterior, Isotherm water heater, BEP DC/240 switchboard, Mastervolt AC/DC power system (with option for solar backup), Aqualuma underwater lights, electric barbecue, and plenty of USB and 240V outlets throughout.

The spacious teak-laid cockpit is ideal for alfresco entertaining.

BUILT LIGHT AND RIGHT

The Cape50’s LOA is 15.2m, with a waterline of 14.5m and a 4.3m beam. Fuel is carried in twin 800lt tanks, with 600lt of water and a 200lt black-water tank. The Cape50’s relative light dry weight of 12,500kg, fitted with twin 440hp Volvo Penta D6 IPS600s, is testimony to the infused-resin technology and choice

of strong, yet lightweight synthetics utilised throughout the construction. And she goes as well as she looks. The hull rockets out of the hole with minimal discernible transition to plane – this is one of the quietest running hulls of its type that I have tested. Performance is exceptionally sporty, especially for a 15m boat with a strong and seaworthy attitude. We had a belly full of fuel and bit of load on our test day, but still achieved 33.5 knot performance, however Steve guarantees he has seen 35 knots. Consumption at 33.5 knots was 168lt/h at 3540rpm. The ride felt extremely solid, with no impact or jarring even in the small head sea. The boat planes at a low 16.5 knots at 2000rpm using 43lt/h, but feels exceptional at a speedy cruise at 22 knots at 2500rpm using 70lt/h (that’s a whopping 452nm range with 10 per cent in reserve). A fast 27 knots at 2930rpm uses 106lt/h, which is still very economical for the size and power. To be honest, I just can’t speak highly enough of the Cape50  – she’s sleek, stylish and built for entertaining. As a first effort for such a demanding and competitive segment of the market, this boat is simply stunning.

Cutting a new wake, the Cape50 Motor Yacht will be on display at this year’s Sanctuary Cove and Sydney boat shows.

For such a demanding and competitive segment of the market, it’s simply stunning.

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE

I

In the November/December 2019 edition of Pacific Powerboat, we featured a somewhat radical refit underway at McMullen and Wing’s Mt Wellington yard in Auckland that involved major surgery to the Formula Icon 60, No Xcuse.

N 2019, THE OWNER APPROACHED AUCKLAND BASED NAVAL ARCHITECTS LOMOCEAN WITH A SIMPLE IDEA; REMOVE THE EXISTING TRIPLE CUMMINS ENGINES AND ZEUS POD DRIVES ON THE FORMULA, AND REPLACE THEM WITH TWIN DIESELS ON CONVENTIONAL SHAFTS THAT NEEDED TO BE PROTECTED FROM THE FLOATING LOGS AND SLASH ENCOUNTERED IN THE BOAT’S HOME WATERS AROUND THE EAST COAST OF THE NORTH ISLAND.

Oh - and the boat had to carry 50% more fuel, run at a flatter trim angle, cruise faster too and don’t forget ensure the boat consumes less fuel. To many the brief would be seen as an almost unsurmountable challenge with a high degree of difficulty involved. The design, boat building and repowering process featured in our earlier story serve as a great example of the use of modern technology to achieve the desired outcome accurately and efficiently. Due to unavailability of ‘as built’ drawings

of No Xcuse, laser scanning was employed to create a true 3D computer model of the existing hull, cockpit and other regions near the intended cut line. The laser scan was used as reference allowing the very different new aft one third of the boat’s hull to exactly fit the remaining original forward section. Computational fluid dynamics analysis (CFD) was undertaken to optimize the new hull, appendages and totally new spray strake geometry. There were also extensive systems integration and

novel structural engineering solutions required to allow the new machinery, driveline, steering, tankage and freezers to be shoe horned into a space they were never originally intended for. McMullen and Wing’s project team, led by Craig Sutherland, were faced with an incredibly accurate build and installation requirement, but the use of inhouse CNC machinery and their usual high level of professionalism, perfectly matched new to old after the major surgery

removed the aft 30% of the hull containing all of the old propulsion machinery. The collaboration success is borne out by the top quality presentation of the re-born boat. In all, 1.3m was added to the original length of 18.3m.

Good Newz

It is fair to say that the complexity of the re-fit and the increased scope of work over that originally envisaged pushed the completion past the expected re-launch date, well into 2020. Exacerbated of course by Covid lockdowns, freight delays on new equipment and the New Zealand border closure preventing engineers from Australia crossing the Tasman to commission the ZF Joystick Manoeuvring System (JMS) and the fly by wire, electric SteerCommand rudder actuation equipment. The system provides a compact, easily fitted package without the usual added complications of installing hydraulic lines and associated equipment. No Xcuse was finally re-launched into the Tamaki river on a grey, chilly July morning in 2020 in front of an expectant audience and rechristened Good Newz.

For LOMOcean’s Craig Loomes, sea trials brought the first opportunity to assess the accuracy of the extensive computational fluid dynamics simulations undertaken before the refit, using GPS speed and the Scania engine electronic fuel burn data. Of particular interest was the influence of high drag items such as the sizable twin skegs designed to protect the propellers and shafts, and their interaction with the large propeller tunnels. The tunnels minimize draft, whilst making it possible to swing large diameter propellers that maximize driveline and fuel efficiency. The first sea trial happened on a sullen, rainy winter’s day, blowing 25-30 knots, with sloppy seas stood up by the tidal flow in the Rangitoto Channel. Such conditions are not generally considered ideal for a first run on a ‘new’ boat, but they quickly proved the sea kindliness of the modified hull, with the propeller tunnels,

skegs and strakes combining to offer remarkable dynamic stability. The reduced running trim angle also allowing the bow to work through oncoming waves with less slamming and spray than previously.

Excellent Fuel Burn

It was a case of good news for Good Newz on fuel burn too - trials indicating massive improvements in fuel consumption even though the boat is now many tonnes heavier. The diesel burn figures tumbling from around 16 litres per nautical mile at 20 knots with the original engines and driveline, to just 10 litres per nautical mile on the new combination. She now has the capability to cruise at 24 knots pulling 1800 rpm whilst carrying 5000+ litres of fuel, with the fuel burn a mere 12 litres per nautical mile. With her increased fuel tank capacity and efficiency, Good Newz has the capability of making the 2125 nautical mile passage to Papeete with no need to refuel on route. The Humphree interceptors also proved beneficial, reducing trim angle and fuel burn at hump speed between 10 and 18 knots with diesel consumption reductions peaking at close to 20% at 14-16 knots. Sprint speed topped out at 33 knots, so gratifying indeed for all involved. Good Newz didn’t hang around Auckland for long after commissioning trials, heading first to Great Barrier island, then south and around East Cape to her home port of Gisborne, but not without stopping to catch some fish on the way - and to sink some celebratory beers. And now, some six months after launch and with more than 300 hours on the Scania’s clocks, her owner and skipper are delighted with the re-born boat; Captain Simon Mills in particular commenting that the big Formula was “originally a bloody good boat, but now she is simply exceptional - something special”.

A

TRANS-TASMAN COLLABORATION HAS RESULTED IN NEW ZEALAND SPORT FISHING BOAT GOOD NEWZ BEING THE FIRST VESSEL IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE TO BE FITTED WITH THE FULL SUITE OF ZF MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS. Delivering power from the twin Scania 1,180bhp engines are ZF 2000 A transmissions, shafts and propellers, as well as the full control system, including ZF SmartCommand, ZF SteerCommand, and the ZF Joystick Maneuvering System (JMS), which enables the iDrift and iAnchor functions. Good Newz is the first vessel of its kind to feature an entire driveline and control system sourced from ZF locally, with the SteerCommand electric steering system the very first installation of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. Allowing for more precise steering,

and ultimately safer operation, SteerCommand features a patented reactive force feedback system at the steering wheel, allowing for tighter turns and easier manoeuvring. SmartCommand meanwhile integrates the latest CANbus communication technology with a user-friendly multi-function control head. Simple to use, the system includes multiple functions such as Easidock, which modulates clutch engagement and engine speeds for safe docking, and AutoTroll, which allows for full control at low engine speeds. Additionally, the craft is fitted with ZF’s JMS, which gives operators the ability to move the vessel sideways, rotate 360 degrees on its axis, or hold the vessel’s position accounting for current and wind. Using ZF’s iAnchor function as the base platform, ZF’s new iDrift technology

offers users the ability to control drift speed and direction when a vessel is in windy conditions, or even in combination with a strong current, all while maintaining the bow’s heading. The versatile ZF 2000 A transmission is perfectly matched to the engines, with much of the base manoeuvring in trials completed with the motors at idle. The transmission is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as sports fishing boats, luxury motor yachts and express cruisers, as well as different propulsion systems, such as waterjets, or in the case of Good Newz, ZF shafts and propellers. zf.com/au

EXTREME MAKEOVER – PART TWO

The CFD predictions to the actual on water test is very close.

Exceeded Expectations

Mills offers an excellent perspective on the changes made in the transformation from No Xcuse to Good Newz; he’s operated the boat for a number of years and knows it inside out. He had significant doubts about the ability of the ZF JMS to control the engines, transmissions, steering and the new 25hp Trac bow thruster to keep the boat on station and pointing in the desired direction as well as the original pod drives could. He’s now happy to admit he was wrong - loving the precision and accuracy that he can achieve - and reckons the system has more than exceeded expectations. And whereas the pods were always ‘busy’ when holding station, the new set up is smoother, quieter and simply less intrusive in the way it performs it’s magic. Interestingly, Mills reports that other elements of the boat’s behaviour have also improved. The prominent skegs that serve to support the propeller shaft and protect the propellers and

rudders from impact with floating logs, result in a rock solid, wander free course, the boat running as if on autopilot, but still highly responsive to the helm with the ZF electric actuators reacting quickly to input and offering haptic feel to the operator through the wheel via electronic force feedback. The skegs have also proven to serve as highly effective roll dampers, so much so that the gyro stabilizer on board is seeing less use. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but the No Xcuse/Good Newz transformation proves the old adage wrong. It hasn’t been an inexpensive exercise and at times it seemed like it may have simply been better to start afresh with a new boat. But, the owner had much to like about No Xcuse and for him, the shorter turnaround time of the refit and the ability to take an already good package and make it better made perfect sense. And his faith in LOMOcean, McMullen and Wing along with his willingness to adopt new technology & thinking has paid off. Good Newz indeed.

LOMOcean Game Boats

LOMOcean have put their experiences and innovations in the re-worked hull to good effect, working recently with Northland’s Bluefix Boatworks on the design of two brand new game boats – a 51 and a 62 footer intended to expand the NorthCape range. More to follow in the next issue.

FLETCH’S TIPS Hi all boat owners out there. Hasn’t summer been amazing across New Zealand the past couple of months? Hope you all have been enjoying your boating activities on the water and fantastic America’s Cup racing.

TIP #052

TIP #053

ROD HOLDER FENDER

CORRECT USE OF LUBE

Here’s a neat way to save your boat from getting rub damage when tying up to wharves or vessels. My mate Brendon designed these cool units to hold fenders at the correct height. These bad boys use the rod holders with the rope coiled around the rod tube to adjust to the right height. Using the rod holder locks the tube and keeps the fender from moving– a very cool idea!

Have you ever removed your boat cover only to find that the domes have separated off from fibreglass or the windscreen? Try this quick fix, grab a jar of Vaseline and a cotton bud and carefully wipe around each dome socket. They will pop off much easier and won’t tear the domes off their base. PRO TIP: do this a couple of times a year or at least at the start of each summer.

Are you buying a preloved boat in Australia? We specialise in pre inspections!

TIP #054

TIE-DOWN CHAINS If you are making any long trips with your boat in tow, it’s strongly recommended using a pair of transom tie-downs to keep your boat in place (pick up a set from your local automotive store). Don’t connect the end to the roller swing arms, as these are not designed to take the stress of a fully loaded ratchet tie down. The solution is to use chain (enough to wrap around the trailer frame) and use a hi-tensile shackle to connect to the tie downs. You could use old anchor chain or get some up from your favourite hardware store.

BURNT CLEARS There is an annoying curse If you have plastic clears on your boat canopy. If they lay anywhere against the stainless-steel frame, you get dark lines appearing. This is caused by the sun heating the metal frame and burning a line where it touches the clears. You can remove these marks with Brasso. However, it will take a bit of elbow grease to get clean. Prevent further burn marks by adding a length of black 10mm Velcro tape on the metal uprights to protect the clears from future damage. Pro Tip: you can pick up lengths of Velcro sticky tape from any haberdashery store; it cost me less than $10 to protect my entire canopy.
