DESIGN FOCUS QUAD 44 ELECTRIC POWERCAT

Electric Powercat Quad Marine brings the revolution to the marine industry with the introduction of the Quad 44, a ground breaking new electric catamaran.

The Quad 44 offers much more than just an alternative to outdated internal combustion engine propulsi on. It identifies the design flaws and usability problems of traditional catamarans, discarded old ways of thinking, and devised innovative new solutions. The result is a unique design that the manufacturers claim will give dramatically improved performance, safety, and accommodation space.

6 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

Quad Marine are gearing up to start production of the Quad 44 electric Catamaran in France beginning in 2020. The Quad 44 is powered by clean, silent, and maintenance-free electric drive units on each of the lower hulls. High-capacity battery banks are located within the twin hulls where they are isolated from the passenger space. Dual solar arrays deliver several kilowatts of power to extend the cruising range.

The lower hulls have a freeboard of only .61m, allowing easy and safe boarding from a side dock with no need for boarding stairs. Access to the central raised hull is through entry doors on both sides of the boat. Once the day’s cruising destination is reached, the twin hulls serve as spacious recreation decks for sunning, swimming, or fishing. www.quadmarine.com

THE QUAD 44 IS POWERED BY CLEAN, SILENT, AND MAINTENANCE-FREE ELECTRIC DRIVE UNITS ON EACH OF THE LOWER HULLS.

THE QUAD 44’S RAISEDCABIN CONFIGUTATION PROVIDES UP TO 40% MORE INTERIOR SPACE THAN TRADITIONAL CATAMARANS OF THE SAME OVERALL LENGTH.

8 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

A season of baby snapper I know we have had a great summer in Auckland with more than 40 rainless days, but that didn’t seem to help my fishing.

B

EFORE XMAS, I was bagging my limit around the 30m mark between Kawau and Tiri islands and while there were plenty of throwbacks, what I kept were a decent size. I never managed to bring in anything huge, but I like snapper around 35-38cm. I have said that the next time I catch a 45cm or bigger snapper, I will return it to where it came from. They are the breeding stock, and I hate filleting a snapper to find it full of eggs. I would love to know how you can ‘sex’ a snapper so that any pregnant females could be put back. Much like you do with crayfish. Would increase the number of snapper in the Gulf for sure. I also think that like they do in the South Island with Blue Cod, we should have a maximum size as well as a minimum for snapper. Maybe 30cm-40cm and anything outside that goes back. What annoyed me leading up to Xmas was the wind. It seemed to blow from the north or northeast for weeks, and every day I had time to go fishing, it was too windy. And of course the days I couldn’t go, it was flat calm and windless. I found, like a lot my fishing mates that I talked to, that January and early February were hard fishing. A couple of times I never caught a legal-size snapper, although I certainly caught plenty undersize. Best day was around early Feb when I went out with my son Mitchell, and we landed a 1m Kingie from the back of Wooden Island, Tiri. It was the second of two, although the first one we lost at the boat. Oh, I should say that he was spearfishing. What was interesting is he said not only was there a massive school of kingie hanging around the rock, but also some huge snapper. A few days later I ventured back to the same spot and using some large floating baits I cast up close to the rock and let the baits sink slowly down into the depths. Now surely, those big snapper were hunger. Not so. I recast a few more times and then using my Minn Kota to hold a position, dropped a couple of baits and a lure down below the boat. Nothing, zip zero, not even a nibble. I will get back out there and try again, and if I do manage to hook into a big red, I promise to take a photo before putting it back. RACING UPS & DOWNS On a completely different topic, it was sad to see how the offshore racing scene in New Zealand and also to some extent in Australia has dropped away to an all-time low. The number of boats that turned out for round one of the NZ Championship at Taupo was abysmal and made me wonder why? I heard that the race organisers were asking for substantial day entry fees and that put a lot of casual racers off. So I was pleased to see on the Offshore Racing Facebook page that they have slashed the fees and you can go racing for the day for just $100. Great move and one that should get some new and old competitors back in the sport. Conversely, GP racing has it’s biggest year ever, with ten registered GP boats. The racing at Lake Karapiro was outstanding, and now with the GP Worlds coming to Lake Karapiro in 2021, the sport is at an all-time high.

10 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

uring our Christmas break, my wife Carla and I decided to jump onboard the German built, 268m cruise liner, Explorer Dream, circumnavigating New Zealand over a week. Leaving from the Port of Auckland eliminated the normal painful holiday flight and custom process issues, as we simply walked aboard (with passports) and started enjoying our choice of nine restaurants, eight bars and fabulous facilities including pools, gyms, spas, boutiques. There was an incredible theatre offering fantastic shows every day. These world-class shows included dancing, Illusionists, theatre and magician shows. Averaging a cruising speed of 24 knots, we covered the NZ coastline surprisingly quickly. The first port of call was the Bay of Islands, and day two we went around Cape Reinga and headed down the West Coast, enjoying the New Year’s Eve Parties on the Tasman Sea. At a very red-eyed 6.00 am New Year’s morning, we slowly glided into the beautiful Milford Sound, followed later that same day by a cruise through a slightly gloomy but beautiful and moody Doubtful Sound. After a delicious News Years Day lunch and short afternoon nanny nap, we were soon passing between the shores of Bluff and Stewart Island. I ensured we had a port-side cabin so we could enjoy the views back to land (which would account for 95% of the travels during our adventure), rather than, in comparison – the not quite so interesting endless ocean views. Day four found us tied up at the Port of Dunedin, where we decided to talk a stroll through town, returning with some lovely historic building shots, two pairs of shoes and a jacket, all for Carla – just when I thought I had escaped any retail therapy. Leaving Dunedin, one day later found ourselves tied up in Wellington – a short Uber trip into the city where we spent a few hours strolling through Te Papa and then a walk along the waterfront. It was great to burn off some of the fuel we had consumed onboard. With ropes cast, it was time to head back up the North Island towards our last port visit, the classical art deco city of Napier. Sadly this was to be our last port before heading for Auckland. It was a wonderful week of smooth sailing, great food and fantastic entertainment. Dream Cruises’ Explorer Dream is based in Asia for half the year, then heads down to Australia and New Zealand for our summer. This was a most memorable trip and excellent value for money. We would love to sail on her again, bringing home many more great memories but hopefully not the same additional 2.5 kilos around the belt I collected this trip!!!

GUEST COMMENT SCOTT WILLIAMSON General Manager, Sports Marine

F

Riding the wave of Emirates Team New Zealand

or the past two and a half years since ETNZ lifted the America’s Cup in Bermuda, the New Zealand marine industry has been in the spotlight. As the 2021 regatta approaches and the excitement builds, it’s clear the local marine industry is well poised to take advantage of this international event with strong demand in new powerboats. As importers and distributors of worldleading boat brands from different corners of the globe, such as Sea Ray, Boston Whaler and Chris Craft from the USA, Nimbus boats from Sweden and Princess Yachts from the UK, we see first-hand the trends in global demand for new powerboats and how technology continues to drive change in the marine industry. This is evident with Princess’ recently released R35, designed in conjunction with legendary design house Pininfarina. The R35 is the first production boat which is fully moulded in carbon fibre, producing a 35% weight saving over GRP. Not stopping there, Princess partnered with Ben Ainslie Racing to develop a unique foiling system, allowing this twin V8 sports

yacht to reach 50kn while maintaining comfort and stability on the water. The Princess R35 has been tagged as the “nautical equivalent of a supercar” and it’s easy to see why. We are excited to see how this forward-thinking boat design and technology will evolve into mainstream production boats in the coming years, bringing savings through lighter, faster and more fuel-efficient hulls. With New Zealand taking the honours of one of the highest boat ownership rate per capita, it is little wonder that kiwi boaties are among the most knowledgeable in the world. Despite being in the corner of the South Pacific, kiwi seafarers demand and appreciate the very best in all aspects of marine products. This year we will be launching the all-new Cox diesel outboard, a gamer changer in marine propulsion. The Cox CXO-300 diesel outboard has been developed in the UK from the ground up. With over ten years and £80m in R&D, this revolutionary 4.4L V8 twin-turbo diesel outboard is now in production, with the first outboard due into New Zealand mid-

2020. The application for a diesel outboard is far and wide, with the concept i n i t i a l l y conceived to meet the demands of NATO’s single-fuel policy. We are now seeing demand for this diesel outboard right across the spectrum in military, commercial, government and recreational sectors. With an eye-watering 650nm of torque – double that of some leading 300HP petrol outboards and at least 25% more fuel efficient, coupled with longer service intervals and the lower cost of diesel at the pump in New Zealand, we expect the Cox diesel outboard to find favour on our shores. We are running a nationwide Cox diesel outboard tour in the second half of 2020, keep an eye out at your local boat ramp, fishing club or yacht club and come and experience the diesel outboard revolution first-hand.

Naiad Sold

The directors of Naiad announce that the business is being sold to their east-coast Australian builder partner, Yamba Welding & Engineering.

The sale will not affect the current business arrangements that Naiad currently has with its international and domestic builders and the Naiad design, sales and support staff will remain located in Picton (New Zealand). The owners of Yamba Welding have a strong commitment to grow the Naiad business. The relationship between Naiad and Yamba Welding has gone from strength to strength since Yamba’s appointment as a licensed builder in 2011. Together they have achieved significant sales to various federal and state government agencies as well as a good cross-section of commercial and rescue agency business. Yamba Welding employs 36 staff at their yard in the coastal town of Yamba, northern NSW. They have

been in business for 45 years, under the ownership of Bill Collingburn, a well-known and highly respected marine industry figure. Their commitment to quality and customer service has seen the business become one of Australia’s leading aluminium boat builders. This acquisition will allow for the retirement from full-time activity of founder Steve Schmidt and his wife, Jenny. Steve will continue in a parttime design consulting role. Over recent years Steve has been working closely with the design team passing on his vast knowledge and experience. This ongoing role will ensure that handover activity continues. John Cowan, who joined the company in 2005, will continue for an indefinite period in a transition role to a soonto-be-appointed general manager. All

three of Steve, Jenny and John are committed to ensuring a smooth and successful handover. Naiad has achieved international success not only in Australia but also in China and the USA. Yamba Welding will continue to grow these relationships established by Naiad in these markets. There will also be no change to the arrangement with Naiad’s highly successful Australian west coast builder Kirby Marine, who over the last 20 years have built 250 Naiads for police, fisheries agencies, tourism operators and rescue agencies, as well as the stunning high-end recreational boats they are probably most famous for. The sale is scheduled to finalise on 31 March 2020, with business continuing very much as usual www.naiad.co.nz

Latest Whitehaven Launched Ecstatic owners and friends celebrated the launch of “Koa Moana”, the exquisite Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge at a tropical-themed cocktail party at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Pittwater. Meaning “Ocean Warrior” in Hawaiian, Koa Moana is the latest custom-crafted vessel in the Whitehaven fleet and the product of her owners’ collaboration with Whitehaven designer, Misha Merzliakov. The event was styled with a profusion of tropical flowers and even a signature cocktail called the “Koa Colada”. A musical duo of guitarist and percussion provided the entertainment, and a professional photographer captured the joy of the occasion, including family portraits of the owners with their three children onboard their new vessel. The 60 guests comprised friends and family of the owners and the extended Whitehaven family, who all enjoyed a balmy evening on the water. Koa Moana took pride of place at the pontoon and guests were eager to inspect the superb interior styling which makes the vessel one-of-a-kind in every way. Bruce Scott welcomed the new owners to the Whitehaven family, emphasising the bonds of friendship and love of boating that unite all Whitehaven owners. He presented them with a hand-crafted sterling silver Whitehaven ornament which is embellished with the signature Whitehaven waves and the co-ordinates of Whitehaven Beach, “so you can always find your way to the iconic beach which is the brand’s namesake”. Koa Moana features a unique layout that reflects the family’s boating requirements. Instead of the island bench in the kitchen, they opted for a hopper window and wet bar, and that leads out to the cockpit for seamless entertaining. This custom design feature keeps the galley open and freeflowing without comprising on bench space. Another feature which appealed to the couple, and is unique to the Whitehaven 6000 flybridge, which is not found in competitors in this class, is a fully enclosed tender garage. www.whitehavenmotoryachts.com

19m Powercat available to finish An opportunity has arisen to complete the custom-build of a 19m widebodied Scott Robson designed aluminium power catamaran, which has stalled mid-build following its previous owner’s change in circumstance. Marine Engineering Consultants (MEC) is one of the industry’s most respected design/boatbuilding firms in the country, specialising in aluminium multihulls and infrastructure such as the awardwinning pontoon/helipad at Heart Reef in the Whitsundays and accolades for superyacht refits and commercial builds. Based at Gold Coast City Marina in the heart of the Coomera Marine Precinct, MEC is a highly credentialed operation with shipwrights and skilled trades on staff and on hand within the precinct. Director, Murray Owen has over four decades’ experience in the business, across commercial, semi-commercial and privately owned vessels. As Murray explains “The 19m catamaran is around 55 percent complete. Built to survey, she is fared and primed and within six months of completion. “It’s literally a blank slate for her new owner to get the jump on summer and build their dream boat to whatever

spec they wish – as a commercial operation: luxury charter, dive boat, game fisher, island hopper, transfer ferry, or for family cruising in complete comfort. Murray has drafted drawings for four different options and there is plenty of scope for new owners to stamp this superb shell with their personalised preferences. With its 6.15m beam, the vessel has a massive volume compared to a monohull of equivalent size, and relatively shallow draft. The oversized cockpit can be adapted for entertaining or game fishing. There’s ample space for seating, fridges, barbeque, ice makers and equipment storage. The current layout features a generously sized saloon with galley on the starboard side, seating and dining space adjacent, with wrap around windows for light and views. Below decks, there are two double cabins forward, each with ensuite, plus a twin cabin on the starboard side and a laundry/storage room to port.

20 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

Accessed by a starboard staircase is the spacious flybridge with wheelhouse, lounge and large aft deck, delivering commanding views. This upper level can easily be reconfigured to suit her new owners’ requirements. Likewise, the expansive foredeck which could accommodate sunpads, seating and table, plus tender stowage and davit. According to Murray, the new build boasts “range, speed, stability and capacity”, along with the myriad virtues of aluminium craft. “Aluminium vessels are light, low maintenance, durable and stronger than their fibreglass counterparts,” he explains. Ryan Leigh-Smith is the broker managing the sale of this one-of-akind vessel. He says the advanced stage of construction is balanced by the vast scope for her new owners. A NEW MODEL FOR THE LEGENDARY BRIG SERIES The Brig Eagle 6.7 is one of the newest models to join the Brig Legendary series. This new model inherited all the best features of the predecessor. Sometimes, small changes make a big difference, that’s the case for Eagle 6.7. The deep V hull is completely redesigned to improve seaworthiness, handling and stability. A brand new multi-purpose navigation mast adds a touch of elegance and highlights the renewed Eagle line DNA. The Eagle 6.7 is fast, responsive and fuel efficient due to a slightly higher tube position. The XL-sized engine shaft widens the variety of compatible engines. Also the 6.7 introduces a bunch of new options that may become a standard soon. First of all, it is the anchoring system that allows you to enjoy your trip even more. The glass console dashboard is designed to accommodate up to two 9 MFDs. The layout features seating for at least eight with a full width aft bench

seat, double starboard side helm and two forward seats. Power options are 115hp-225hp and the 670 carries 191 litres of fuel plus 45 litres of fresh water.

45 Riviera’s raft-up on the swan river

Riviera truly got into the spirit of Christmas with a series of Riviera raftups and exclusive events around Australia. Always one of the most significant events on the boating calendar, the Perth Western Australia raft-up was held under cloudless skies before Christmas on the Swan River. At the Western Australia raft-up, organised by R Marine Perth, the Riviera family rafted together and enjoyed a day in the sun, sharing in their love of their motor yachts. Organising 45 boats ranging from an M290 up to 60-foot flybridge is no small feat with preparations starting around midday for an afternoon of memorable celebration. The boats were arranged around a central mother-ship, requiring precision close-

quarters handling from each owner. “It was fantastic to see so many of the western Australian Riviera family coming together and getting into the Christmas spirit. Our owners love to be a part of this highly-enjoyable annual event. “The raft-up days are an excellent opportunity for owners to get to know each other with everyone able to step from yacht to yacht, enjoying a chat and an ice-cold beverage. The Riviera Family certainly know how to celebrate, and their passion for their yachts is simply infectious. “As we have many new owners joining the western Australian Riviera family in 2020, next year we will welcome more than 50-yachts to our raft-up to celebrate Riviera’s 40th anniversary, making this WA’s largest raft-up ever,” said Michael Pitman, Dealer Principal

of R Marine Perth. «These exclusive invitation events are a superb example of the strong friendship and bond among Riviera owners across Australia and around the world. It›s what we call the ‹Riviera Family›, and we are excited to be a part of this amazing group who just love boating,» said Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst. The boats were arranged around a mother-ship that became the stage and entertainment hub for the day, headlined by a local live band with their upbeat music creating a wonderful atmosphere. Most owners were dancing the afternoon away until 6 pm, and then they moved away from the raft-up and anchored together to continue to enjoy the magical surrounds of the Swan River. www.RivieraAustralia.com

Horizon unveils six new yachts at its 2020 open house event The brand new FD75 and FD102 models made their global debuts at the 2020 Horizon Open House event in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in mid January.

The Horizon Open House 2020 was focused around the Horizon Marina.

Horizon Yachts has entered the new decade in dramatic fashion, kicking off the new year with no fewer than six yacht launches. All six yachts were on display for owners, esteemed guests and international press during the biennial Horizon Open House, a three-day event held January 14-16th at the company’s facilities in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Within this impressive showcase, the new FD75 and FD102 models made their global debuts. Horizon’s Fast Displacement (FD) Series has been extremely successful since it was first unveiled at the 2016 Taiwan International Boat Show. The striking exterior profile features large sections of glass and expansive deck areas while a wide beam and innovative High Performance Piercing Bow design and

hull form accommodate unparalleled volume within the interior. The FD Series has seen record sales in the last 4 years, with 20 FD Series yachts sold and delivered to clients hailing from the U.S., Australia, Europe and Asia. Additionally, accommodations to clients’ requests for customisation have resulted in the creation of new FD models, and the series now comprises seven models spanning to the FD102 and upcoming FD125. Taking its place at the entrance of the Cor D. Rover-designed FD Series, the debuting FD75 is itself a remarkable achievement in terms of design and naval architecture. Designed to appeal to serious owner/operators, the FD75 features a raised pilothouse design that accommodates both an open bridge and a lower helm area within its 20’ 4”

Completed within an impressive 12-month build period and classed to Bureau Veritas, Hull 1 boasts an overall length of 33.07m and accommodates a voluminous interior within a 7.68m beam. Fitted with innovative amenities throughout, the FD102 is configured with double saloons, an on-deck master stateroom, and a spacious four stateroom layout on the lower deck. The FD102 accommodates up to six crew members, and a walkaround design on the bridge deck level maintains the privacy of the interior space while providing a seamless transition

Since the model was first announced, three FD102 yachts have been sold, with Hull 2 scheduled to deliver to her American owners this summer followed by Hull 3 in the early fall. Accompanying the debuting FD Series yachts are the newest FD80 and FD87 launches. The latest FD80, Hull 4, features an enclosed bridge (Skyline) configuration and fourstateroom layout with an on-deck master. The most popular model in the FD Series, Hull 12 of the FD87 Skyline takes full advantage of the FD Series’ High Performance Piercing Bow and hull design and has been equipped with stabilisers for maximum performance and comfort. Powered by twin MTU engines of 1,600hp each, this latest FD87

achieves a maximum speed of 20.1 knots. Continuing the showcase are representatives from two of Horizon’s eight yacht series. The brand new RP100 is an extension of the RP97 model, so configured to accommodate a spacious four stateroom layout appealing to the Australian market. Rounding out the new launches is Hull 3 of the popular PC65 from the Horizon Power Catamaran Series. SCIBS & SIBS SET FOR BIG 2020 The two biggest boat shows in Australia, Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), 21-24 May and Sydney International Boat Show (SIBS), 30 July-3 Aug are both reporting positive industry response to the 2020 editions of each show. Domenic Genua, General Manager of Marketing, Events & Communication for the Australian Boating Industry Association Ltd says interest is extremely high for space in the exhibition halls and the marina. The Sydney International Boat Show returned to the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney and Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour in 2019. The show, being the largest recreational boat show in the southern hemisphere, fills the entire exhibition space and both levels available at the ICC, as well as the show’s purpose-built marina on Cockle Bay. Once again the Cockle Bay marina will be the home to hundreds of power and sail yachts, cruisers and trailer boats. Expect to see some world premieres of both boats and products. The adjacent ICC will house most of the equipment suppliers and marine retailers, plus the biggest display of trailer boats under one roof in Australasia.

International interest is high, and Genua says it is always a juggling act getting everyone in and making sure they have enough space to display their products. «The Boat Show circuit provides a forum for the broader boating community to gather, share insights and learn about the latest technology and innovation that makes life on the water just that little bit better. Since their inception, boat shows have been the hub for buyers to either get into boating or upgrade their existing boating gear, and SIBS has been an important part of that,» says Genua. He adds that for 2020 the show will continue building on the foundation of education and entertainment. The 2019 show saw over 260 exhibitors, with 210 boats on the purpose

built marina and an attendance of over 60,000. The 2020 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) has attracted a strong response from exhibitors, all of them enthused by the prospect of an enhanced larger layout and additions to the program for this year’s show. Australian manufacturers and the cream of international boat brands have already signed up including Riviera, Maritimo, Princess Yachts, Horizon, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Ocean Alexander, Ferretti, Azimut, Galeon, Fleming, Whitehaven and Integrity. From the multihull segment, Seawind, Lagoon, Leopard, Fountaine Pajot, Aquila and Iliad will have new models on show. In the popular ‘Sports Leisure and Fishing Precinct’ brands including Boston Whaler, Sea Ray, Mastercraft, Cruise Craft, Quintrex, Makocraft, Tracker, Sea Jay and Stessco have been quick to secure space. From the burgeoning RIB category, Brig will have around 30 models on display. Electronics equipment specialists such as Raymarine, Simrad, B&G, Lowrance and Garmin are planning major launches of products that enhance the boating lifestyle in navigation, safety, fishing and entertainment. According to SCIBS Sales & Partnerships Manager Dominic O’Brien “Over 80% of the site has already been booked and the show is expected to sell out well in advance. SCIBS is significant as the first boat show of the Australian calendar, attracting more than 45,000 visitors – consumers and B2B customers – from all over the country, New Zealand and Asia.” www.sanctuarycoveboatshow.com.au www.sydneyboatshow.com.au

2020 will be a busy boat show year again for the New Zealand marine industry. New Zealand’s two leading shows are both based in Auckland and split by four months. The Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show (14-17 May) is followed by the Auckland On Water Boat Show (17-20). Both shows recorded amongst their highest ever attendance figures in 2019 and 2020 is already shaping up to be just as big. Organisers of both shows indicate a keen pre-show interest from exhibitors, both locally and overseas. While the NZ Boat Show is predominantly trailer boats, the electronics, outboards and especially the fishing equipment sectors of the marine industry treat this as their premium show of the year. Organiser Dave Gibbs, says, “The show is more popular with the industry than ever, with just a hand-full of small stands still available (a week before Xmas!)”. He added that the 2020 show also looks like again being extremely popular with the public with pre-Xmas sales of E-Tickets at an all-time high. “One of the key drawcards for the 2020 show will again be the stunning Surtees/Yamaha Grand Prize, a must-bewon prize package with a retail value of over $230,000! There will also be many other great prizes on offer too”, says Gibbs. The NZ Marine run AOWBS will be in its second year at the new Viaduct Auckland venue, which was forced on the organisers in 2019 by Auckland City Council, after Emirates Team New Zealand were given the Viaduct Events Centre (previous centre for the show) as their base for the forthcoming 36th Americas Cup series. The 2019 show proved a big success, with 55 marina exhibitors and over 100 exhibitors on land in and around marquees. The 2019 show attracted 14454 patrons, which while down on previous years, was according to exhibitors a very positive show with good sales made. Events Manager Stacey Cook says that even before the 2020 prospectus has been sent out, they were fielding a lot of enquiries from new and current exhibitors. “2020 will see another full show, and as we are right on the edge of America’s Cup bases the activity surrounding the show should be intense and add a lot to the vibrancy of the show,” says events manager Stacey Cook.

Seakeeper launches its smallest unit yet Designed for boats from 23 to 30 feet, the longanticipated Seakeeper 1 made its surprise debut at the Miami boat show. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Seakeeper is giving credence to the adage: Good things come in small packages. The stabilization giant announced today that they are using the Miami boat show to debut their long-anticipated Seakeeper 1. Their smallest model to date, and by far, it’s designed to eliminate the rock and roll of boats 23 to 30 feet and up to 13,000 pounds. Measuring a compact 23- by 24by 16-inches and weighing in at a shockingly svelte 350 pounds, the footprint of this system,

combined with a more-modernlooking housing, should raise the eyebrows of large yacht owners that are eager to add Seakeeper stability to their tenders or second smaller boats. Lending the new unit refit friendliness is its flushmount installation housing–a first for the manufacturer. As you would expect from a unit designed for the smaller boat set, power draws are shockingly low. Running only on 12v DC power, the entry level model should consume just 55 amps, according to the manufacturer. Besides its size and power draw, the newcomer punches above its weight with a number of first-time features. One is a shorter-than-ever spool-up time; it takes only 15 minutes

from startup (the amount of time it typically takes to prep for leaving a slip anyway) before it’s ready to begin stabilizing. The second impressive feature is a dedicated control unit on top of the device; connectivity to Garmin, Simrad and Raymarine MFDs is still available. According to Seakeeper, 12 boat manufacturers so far are slated to integrate the unit into their new models. I expect that number to grow precipitously. MSRP is said to be $14,900 with shipment beginning this June (2020). www.seakeeper.com

TKO boats busy Invercargill TKO Boats is only weeks away from launching its first 8.5m hardtop, the first of two similar boats from this new alloy boat builder. TKO Boats may be a new name to the aluminium boat building scene, but that doesn’t seem to have had any adverse effect on their order books. Dean Giddens, from TKO Boats, says that the first two 8.5m hardtops are just the start of potentially upwards of 18 orders. Dean has had many years experience

in the alloy boat building business and says he felt it was time he branched out and introduced his brand. “We have the facility to build about 15 boats a year, and already we are finding a market not only in Invercargill and the South Island, but also the North Island, which is encouraging”. He added that he hopes to have not only his new 8.5m HT at the 2020 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show but also an 8m and a stunning 11.2m powered by a pair of Evinrude 250hp G2 engines. The company called on renowned

designers, Hall Marine Design to come up with concepts and the result is a very impressive line up of models. The range extends from 8m through to 11.2m, and all can be sterndrive or outboard powered. The first TKO 8.5 HT was launched at the end of January with a pair of 250hp Evinrude G2s, with boat number two having a couple of 200hp Suzuki outboards. TKO Boats | Dean Giddens | Ph 021 502791

Second Harbour Classic arrives in Australia

Harbour Classic is a bold new addition to the Whitehaven fleet of motor yachts. The genesis of this boat started two years ago when Julie and Bruce Scott, owners of the Whitehaven brand, saw the need for a classic day boat to enjoy Australia’s many protected waterways. So, the Harbour Classic was born. Now the second hull has arrived in Australia and with some bold new additions….. Whilst she may be different from the other yachts in the Whitehaven stable, the Harbour Classic 40 adheres to the principles of great, classic design, a focus on entertainment and usability, and a fully customised build. Yet, when it came to building the second hull, the team wanted to further show the flexibility in the boat and the options available. Recently the second Harbour Classic 40 arrived into Australia for her finishing touches under the watchful eyes of the production team. This boat has the same distinct, clean lines, however, this time, slight modifications have been made to her planing hull to accommodate twin Volvo Penta IPS drive package. “Some boat owners like having a single engine with a traditional shaft drive and some want the security of twin engines plus the manoeuvrability of IPS drives. With the Harbour Classic 40, we can offer both,” explained Ryan Hanson, Production Director. The options don’t stop there. The full hard top has been shortened and coupled with an extendable sunshade to give the owner flexibility to manage the amount of sunlight on the back deck. The interior has been refreshed with oak timbers and the front cabin is now fully private with a full door. It makes for a very adaptable boat. It suits owners starting their boating lifestyle as much as those enthusiasts who are looking to cruise further afield. The Harbour Classic 40 can accommodate two couples or a young family where everyone gets the privacy they want. The cockpit can be fully protected for those escaping the city in summer or partially for sunset cocktails. whitehavenmotoryachts.com.au

The contemporary Scandinavian design coupled with reliable and efficient Volvo shaft drive propulsion make the Nimbus range of coupe motor yachts a must view for anyone considering a new launch. The aft deck shares the same level as the bathing platform and saloon. It has a generously sized comfortable L-shaped sofa for five persons with foldable seating. The dining table folds down into a cocktail table with glass holders with stainless steel handles. Perfect for relaxing or social activities with friends and family. The interior of the boat is of wonderful quality and atmosphere particularly in regard to space and light. The boat has integrated ventilation and five large opening port lights for extra light intake. Upholstered bulkheads in light colours help to reduce noise. The boat has two cabins an owner’s cabin (available with Queen bed or V-bed) and a guest cabin, sharing a common head with shower. In all, the 305 Coupé is a contemporary, super-functional boat with reduced environmental impact and which is perfect for an uncomplicated and enjoyable life at sea. The boat is built in Sweden at the Nimbus yard in Mariestad. Join the growing Nimbus family, 18 proud Nimbus Owners since May 2017 in New Zealand

Chris-Craft Launch 27 Chris-Craft is a truly American story. Born in 1874, it came of age at a time that defined the notion of American ingenuity. Chris Craft have taken their place as an iconic boat builder and have been a luxury symbol for many years all over the world. Chris Craft are a unique boat like no other, everything is meticulously handcrafted right down to the finer details. Like each of the Launch family of boats, the Launch 27 beautifully combines comfort and performance. This newly updated larger runabout provides even more options than its smaller sisters. Offering greater power, increased agility and additional roominess afforded by the longer hull and wider beam, the Launch 27 is a shining jewel in the Chris-Craft crown. While Henry Ford was creating the first motorcars, his watercraft counterpart, Chris Smith, was developing the very first enginepropelled boats and skiffs. Even during the Great Depression, Chris-Craft thrived because quality is always prized. During the Second World War, the company reinforced its hold on the American imagination when its landing craft transported the first troops to the Normandy shore on D-Day. In more ways than one, Chris-Craft would become a symbol of liberation and freedom. In 1959, Time Magazine would recognize the popular phenomenon of pleasure boating and put Chris-Craft on its cover. Throughout its rich history, a reputation for quality and style have made it the favorite of presidents, celebrities and icons of American affluence - names like Roosevelt, Kennedy, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Ford, Sinatra, and Hepburn.

With a displacement of around a weight-watchers goal of 89,500 lbs, the GB85 will be considerably lighter than any competitive size boat from some of the world’s leading manufacturers. The essence of the 85’s weight-loss program is undeniably esoteric. “Except for the hull, which is E-glass,” Richards says, “everything— the longitudinals, transversals, bulkheads, everything else—is carbon fibre. We’re removing so much weight by going this route that when we finally launch the boat this coming December, I have no doubt she’ll be considered truly revolutionary. We plan on weighing her once a week as we continue through the construction process so we can track, control and accurately hit the target weight of 40.6 metric tons.” Of course, there’s way more to designing a large, “revolutionary” cruising vessel than merely delivering a feathery displacement. Tank testing was completed on the 85’s warped-plane hull form (with a significant amidships deadrise that flattens in increments going aft) at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania and, according to Richards, the results were both gratifying and striking. «The Grand Banks 60, with a similar hull form, was super-efficient,» says Richards. «But the 85 is even more so, probably due to her extra length—the longer a boat is, the better she›ll run, more or less. But this 85 is amazing, really—at 21 knots there was virtually no wake. Most other vessels of the same type and size would be pulling a tidal wave.» The new boat’s power plant will be as unusual and comparatively impressive as her displacement and her efficiency. For starters, a matched set of 1,000-hp Volvo Penta D13-IPS1350 diesels will inhabit two engine rooms instead of one. This doubled-up approach, says Richards, will allow for a large garage in between, with plenty of space for a dinghy and water toys. In addition, he says the arrangement will also allow for more elbow room and better access for maintenance and repairs. Richards is predicting a 30-knot top speed, which will be super impressive with 2000hp. The fuel capacity is specified as a single 10,000-litre tank which at 21 knots should offer a range of around 1,000 nm. The 85’s interior will likely offer four our six cabin layouts, along with a Skylounge version instead of an open flybridge. A 6.70m beam will guarantee a spacious full-beam master if optioned as well as the main deck with plenty of stretch-out room. What’s a tad different, however, says Richards, is a crew’s quarters that are divided into living and sleeping spaces that afford privacy and laid-back, easy living. The first 85 to splash in Malaysia has already been sold to an individual who’s owned a veritable parade of Palm Beach yachts over the years. The immediate destination of the first 85 to splash this coming December will be Auckland, in time for America’s Cup races in 2021. www.palmbeachmotoryachts.com

As of January 2020, the entire line up of Seven Marine engines has been incorporated into the Volvo Penta production process. “It’s with great pride that we add the Seven Marine outboard range to our portfolio of marine gasoline solutions that are produced in Tennessee,” said Martin Bjuve, president of Volvo Penta of the Americas. PACIFIC POWERBOAT RACING NEWS

GP FIELDS BEST EVER The 2020 Hydro Thunder Grand Prix Hydroplane series is offering the biggest field ever of genuine GP hydroplanes, with 10 plus boats turning out for the opening round at Taupo. With NZGP boats adopting the HRL Canadian Hydroplane rules of smaller engines and reduced blowers to make the boats more reliable and affordable. This has opened the door for some new drivers to enter Grand Prix Hydroplane racing in New Zealand with several more also looking at joining the class. “Lady Liz” previously (The Steeler) driven by Jason Haggerty from Cromwell stepped up from Grand National to the GP class with 2019 being his rookie season. Jason proved he can foot it with the more experienced drivers as he was very competitive in taking away the AE Baker Australasian Hydroplane Championship at Lake Karapiro. ‘Miss Marsden Cove’ previously (Annihilator 2 – GP008 ) driven by Steve Preece comes into the class as a new GP driver Steve previously drove a Formula One Tunnel and purchased the boat from David Alexander. “Gulf Oil Tiger” previously (Annihilator GP007 & Tiger GP24) is driven by Peter Dudson from Hamilton. Pete is not new to the sport but it has been a

few years since he has driven Modified Hydroplanes a couple of classes below. Pete has teamed up with ‘Gulf Oils Gambler” previously (Annihilator 3 GP009) driven by Kevin Ireland also from the Modified Hydroplane class. Kevin had his first season in the GP class in the 2018 season and had a few teething issues but is certainly a strong competitor. The crowd favourite from Otorohanga “Fair Warning“ Scott Coker has had to spend the winter repairing his boat after damaging it at Lake Karapiro when losing a propeller, Coker who is well known in the sport following in his father ‘Selwyn’ footsteps has a smaller boat but is by no means compromised he has proven more than once he can still win. Warwick Lupton the leader and mentor for Grand Prix Hydroplane racing in New Zealand again drives his New Zealand design famously known as the lobster boat “Annihilator” GP.007. Warwick led the Kiwi team of his two sons Ken & Jack to compete in the HRL Series during the off season in Canada. A mixed and very emotional campaign, with Jack having two horrific crashes and Ken a few minor engine issues in his first few race meetings . Both brothers proved they are equally as good as the other Canadian and American drivers.

40 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

Ken Lupton has a brand new Bert Henderson GP Hydroplane. The boat has been bought into New Zealand from Canada in a kit set and put together here. Canadian Jamie Auld spent a few weeks during the winter working on the boat for Ken. “Lucas Oils” the boat that Ken successfully campaign in the 2019 NZ season winning the Hydro Thunder GP Series, National GP title, Masport Cup and the NZ Driver of the Year had an unbeatable season. David Alexander who previously owned “The Steeler 777 NZ” is the owner of the new boat which he has named “Miss Waverley“ a name that his grandfather used to race under many years ago. Alexander launched his boat in Valleyfield, Canada in July and raced his first ever race at Valleyfield a place that every boat driver dreams of driving at. Valleyfield has been going for 81 years and is the home of Grand Prix Hydroplane racing . The 2020 Hydro Thunder series is over four rounds with the first held at Lake Taupo January 24-25-26th, with round two at Lake Karapiro ‘Masport Cup” February 7-8-9th. Round 3 will be run at Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Feb 29th & March 1st, with the final round and the AE Baker Australasian Championship to be held March 8-9th at Lake Dunstan. www.gphydroplane.co.nz www.facebook.com/hydrothundernz

MARITIMO TO DEFEND XCAT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2020 Current UIM XCAT world champions Maritimo Racing are in the process of off-season testing and development in readiness for the start of the 2020 season with the goal to defend national and international championship titles. Driver and Maritimo lead designer, Tom Barry-Cotter said the 2020 season starts in May and this year’s competition promises to be more exciting than ever with a new championship promoter in the final stages of a deal set to grow the profile and expand the global reach of the XCAT brand. Races during 2020 will be held in the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia.

“We were the best powerboat team in the world last year, but in keeping with our corporate culture, ethos and drive we are focused on the future, and working to ensure we achieve even greater performance and reliability in 2020. Barry-Cotter said Maritimo Racing is in the process of constructing the second R30 XCAT which will be the team’s research and development

hull, which can alternate with the existing world championship winning R30 entered in the XCAT World Championship at the end of each season. “By having an identical boat here in Australia we can rapidly increase the rate of development, and enable specific upgrades to be fine tuned before installing or applying to the boat in the championship.” he said.

CRUISING MATTERS WITH LAURIE CRANFIELD

Storms abound during our final med cruising year We can debate until the cows come home whether global climate change is being caused by human activity or Mother Nature, but it’s now beyond debate that it’s happening and meteorologists warn of considerable effects on our planet’s oceans – temperature changes, rising sea levels, more severe storms and larger waves, all of which will affect cruisers.

I

F YOU’RE CRUISING FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME YOU’RE CERTAINLY GOING TO ENCOUNTER SOME ADVERSE WEATHER AND WE’VE FOUND THIS DURING EACH OF OUR NINE YEARS CRUISING THE MED ABOARD ENVOY. However we previously found storms mostly confined to autumn and winter while during our final year we encountered more storms than ever before and unusually during summer. It’s early July in Italy’s Gulf of Taranto and with a severe storm forecast we decide to go into Taranto Marina. Here we encounter our worst storm ever with one 20 metre yacht moored broadside to the storm front partially driven under the marina jetty by wind and waves and two yachts blown from their hard stand cradles. This storm continued south to kill several people ashore in Greece. In late September to early October we have four storms, one with thunder, lightning and heavy rain continuing the whole night. During one storm we need to take evasive action to avoid a drifting yacht. Then on 7 October a severe “destructive thunderstorm” is forecast and we decide to head into our home marina at Lefkada a few days early to reduce the chance of damage, particularly as Envoy has been sold. Cruisers’ main concern is that an approaching storm front can generate exceptionally strong winds, often around 60 knots. While this is generally only for a short time, another issue is that as the front passes over the wind changes direction so what was a protected wind-facing anchorage now becomes a lee shore. The wind can often generate a severe chop placing additional strain on ground tackle while heavy downpours of rain usually accompany the front adding poor visibility to an already tricky situation. Although Envoy has only dragged her anchor once

we’ve regularly witnessed the chaos of boats dragging anchors, colliding with others (including ourselves), being driven aground and dinghies overturned or lost. Early on during our Med cruising we decided that whenever possible we’d head into a well protected marina when winds over 40 knots and/or storms were forecast. This strategy was mainly based on our experience that no matter how well prepared we might be, others aren’t and pose real danger when their vessels drag. Even in a marina extra precautions for storms are needed, particularly if there is any surge, but what should we do if a storm is forecast and we’re going to be at anchor? Firstly be fully aware of the weather forecast, write it down and listen for updates. Pick the most secure anchorage you can – one on a weather shore, suitable for wind shifts, free of swell, clear of reefs, rocks or other obstructions and ideally with a good exit and an alternative bolt hole available if conditions change. Anchor well clear of other vessels as the main danger is other vessels dragging and hitting yours. Make sure the anchor is set well and you have ample chain deployed – in the order of depth plus 60 metres if space permits. We prefer to use one anchor rather than two because during storms the boat often turns several times, winding the two chains around each other and making quick retrieval difficult. Use a long, heavy-duty bridle to reduce shock on your chain and ensure the cleat you secure it to will manage the strain. Consider using chafe guards. If possible check your anchor using a mask and snorkel as well as checking the anchorage out by dinghy. Write down your GPS position and set your

44 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

GPS anchor alarm. Bear in mind that with up to 60 metres of chain deployed you may move quite a distance, but not be dragging. It’s preferable to have your dinghy in the water in case of emergency, but it must be well secured in a way that will avoid it flipping upside down. Have your life jackets and other safety equipment out ready for use. Ensure all covers and gear on deck are securely lashed down. Check your radar’s and plotter’s view of your anchorage during the day so you know what it looks like and think what will happen if the wind shifts or you have to move. Have your engine(s) ready for quick starting in case you need to avoid a dragging vessel or reduce strain on your ground tackle during exceptionally strong gusts. If other vessels are nearby deploy fenders in case of they drag and collide with you. It’s a good idea for the skipper to have some sleep during the day when others can more easily monitor developments. The situation always appears to be and in fact is more dangerous during night time and the skipper may then not get much sleep. Before dark rig spotlights, have torches to hand and keep your radar on standby. If other boats start moving around put on some additional deck or internal lights so they can more easily see and avoid your vessel. If the situation in an anchorage becomes too dangerous or untenable, an option may be to proceed into clear, deep water and motor slowly into the seas. Unfortunately it seems we’re going to experience these situations more in the future, so it’s a good idea to have a plan and be well prepared.

FISHING with Bruce Duncan (aka Captain Swish)

There is so much good flesh left in a snapper frame after filleting it's a shame to throw it away.

DO YOU NEED TO CATCH YOUR LIMIT?

I

have seen many changes over my lifetime, from way back when paper depth sounders were flash, and we used good old fashioned chart work to find the fish. Today colour sounder chart plotters like my Furuno TZ touch screen can tell you the bottom type as well as the size of the fish, at an affordable price everyone now has more information at their fingertips than us old fellas with a lifetime of experience and knowledge. Back in the day, there were no limits, and the first recreational catch limit was thirty snapper per person a day. Back then, I was the neighbourhood hero taking fish to every house up and down the street. The truth is that I was just young and dumb, stroking my ego rather than thinking about the future fishery. To see the limit eroded to the seven bag limit today is a good thing, nobody needs sixty fillets, and it gives you a far greater appreciation and value of what we catch and how we should treat it and eat it. Thirty years of new immigrants arriving

on our shores has thrown a new dynamic of not only new methods of fishing but also opened our eyes to the way we cook it. Trevally and Kahawai, we considered only suitable for bait, but today they are valued as quality smoking and for sashimi. Even the heads and frames are used to make fish stock Now I only need to keep two or three snapper, but on the odd days, I will keep a few bigger fish when I want to fire up the smoker to share around with friends and family. But I never freeze my fish. Three snapper may equal six fillets, but then what more can you get out of them? The first rule is to take care of your fish the moment it’s landed, Ike it and then place it into an ice slurry for twenty minutes. Covered it tends to chill and set the flesh. This then makes them easier and cleaner to fillet but best of all they retain body fat and moisture giving fillets more flavour plus a far longer fridge life.

48 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

As much as I like my fish just skinned, boned and cooked naturally, you can’t beat the odd meal of crispy skinned snapper done in sesame oil. The key with crispy skin snapper is to gut and scale them at sea rather than making a hell of a mess in the kitchen You also need to leave the snapper whole in the fridge overnight for the flesh to fully set, so you do not lose moisture and flavour during cooking. Take the fish out of the fridge and fillet them an hour before cooking to bring it up around room temperature, lightly coat with cornflour. The key to frying any fish or meat is to bring the frying pan up to heat before you add any oil. Add a little olive oil and a small knob of butter heating, till the mixture is starting to spit. Lay the fillets in the pan, skin side up and cook till the skin is crispy. A nice touch, once the fish is removed from the pan, is to toss in some chopped spring onion with a touch of white wine, quickly stirring to soak up the flavours, then drizzle it over the fillets.

BAG IT AND TAG IT There is more to a fish than just the fillets such as the tasty flesh around the belly flaps. I cut these out and freeze in a zip lock bag. These make a great tasty treat when smoked that can be eaten hot or cold. Once defrosted, wipe over with handy towel then rub the fleshy side with maple syrup and brown sugar [this can also be done before freezing]. Laid on a rack in the smoker, they only need ten minutes

cooking. Smoke the heads and frames as the flesh is fabulous when added to a seafood chowder or tossed in with a salad covered in a wasabi and aioli dressing. I have never been a great fan of fish soup to be fair, until I was on a boat with some Chinese who came prepared on the day. Being a typical wasteful kiwi, tossing the heads and frames over the side, they grabbed a few frames and headed for the galley.

Frames, heads and flaps make good stock for soup

WORLD’S LEADING MANUFACTURER OF ALUMINIUM HULLED RIBS & TENDERS

Before long they emerged with a clear tasty meaty bone in a fish soup. They boiled the frames in salted water then added sliced ginger, spring onion, a couple of small crushed garlic bulbs and left it to simmer. This on its own was stunning, but at times to give it another kick, I add a tiny touch of fivespice powder. Be it seven or three snapper you keep, there is a lot more value to be gained from our catch than just fillets alone.

The belly flaps provide tasty flesh.

MARITIMO M64

Twin Volvo Penta D13/1000 give the M64 nearly 30 knot top speed. 50 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

s e i r e S The M

n o i t u l Evo Boats are continually evolving and none more so than the Maritimo M64. While the M64 is not a new model, it is the evolution of the proven M61, which was first launched in 2015. Now with over 20 boats and five years later the upgraded 2020 model M64 comprises both established and new ideas, encompassing some very significant changes.

BOAT REVIEW

MARITIMO M64 (This Page) The galley island counter is a great feature. You have the choice of a Euro transom (pictured), or fishing transom layout. (Opposite) The flybridge is an extension of the social spaces in the M64. Owners can alter the saloon layout to suit requirements. The ensuites are impressive with extra-large shower cubicles and vanity areas. With the change in the hull windows also came a complete redesign of the master stateroom. As well as the sumptuous master, the M64 has two more cabins and bathrooms.

T

he first and most noticeable is the much larger integral hull side windows and hull contours which have been reshaped.

With the change in the hull windows came a complete redesign of the master stateroom. The side hanging lockers have been relocated, with the forward bulkhead now home to all the hanging locker and drawer storage. This has given the full-width master stateroom a more spacious atmosphere, with the deep side windows radiating plenty of light. There is now an overhead translucent skylight bringing even more light into the master. Low profile drawer units have been designed into the port side of the stateroom with a large lounger starboard and king-size berth in the centre. However, there are variations available. The owner’s ensuite is impressive with an extra-large atrium feature shower cubicle and vanity area.

As well as the sumptuous master, the M64 has two more cabins and bathrooms. To port is the VIP cabin, with a pair of sliding single berths that can be pulled together to form one large double, plus an optional foldaway Pullman upper berth. You have the option of manually moving the beds together, or you can choose an electrically operated system. The VIP also has its own ensuite head and shower. Forward is the guest cabin, which also boasts plenty of hanging locker space, twin overhead hatches and, again, its private ensuite. This also doubles as a day head.

SAME DNA

Tom points out that the ‘new’ M64 shares all the same technical Maritimo DNA such as the hull shape and construction which has been developed in conjunction with Maritimo Racing. “Every aspect of the hull from the way it handles,

52 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

trims and balances are heavily influenced by what we learn from our racing programme”. Maritimo hallmarks are very evident in the M64. Safe and secure walk-around side decks give a sense of comfort and peace of mind when moving around the vessel. With deep walk-around side decks from bow to stern, there is no need for cabin handrails. Like all Maritimos, power is transmitted via a conventional shaft drive. “Our latest low-profile driveline has been tuned to be more efficient than ever while reducing noise, vibration and required maintenance”, adds Tom. Standard power is a pair of Volvo Penta D13 900, with our boat up-speced to a couple of Volvo Penta D13 1000. Max speed is just shy of 30 knots, with the best cruise around 25 knots. Based on 90% of the 5600-litre fuel capacity you have approx. 420nm cruise range @ 2200rpm. You also have the choice of Scania D16 1150 or Caterpillar C18 1150, which will both push the M64 to well over 30 knots. During our morning run on The Broadwater and off the Gold Coast, we encountered no more than a low swell with relatively smooth seas. Effortless for the M64 and made for an extremely pleasurable boat to drive. Fortunately, having run the original generation hull in moderately rough water some years ago when in the M61 guise, I can vouch for the boats restful and smooth ride. Tom points out that by developing a collaboration of weight distribution, shaft angle, gear ratios, propeller choice and hull design, the M64 performs exceptionally at cruise and even when fully loaded it maintains excellent efficiencies. I certainly noticed how smoothly the new generation M64 got up onto the plane and the low bow attitude during the transition. No big hump to climb over! I was impressed by how quiet it was in the flybridge of the M64, Something that Maritimo have been

focused on with all their latest premiere models. Another hallmark of the Maritimo M Series is the fully enclosed climate controlled flybridge with internal staircase. Makes you feel you can cruise all day in any weather conditions. Being a one station boat, the flybridge is always going to be another very social area, and in the M64, Maritimo has made sure that space is warm and inviting. Passagemaking or day trips on the harbour, it’s a perfect place to enjoy the journey. The flybridge is the only helm aboard, and it is imposing with a triple bank of 19” Garmin screens surrounded by the necessary navigation and equipment controls. Sitting alongside Maritimo’s Rosco Willaton, who along with Tom had arrived back only a few days prior from Dubai where they picked up the X-Cat world title – I felt I was in business class or the gold lounge at the movies. Twin helm seats provide the comfort you need for long passages and high profile fore and side windows offer exceptional visibility from the helm. There is an aft-facing lounge to port and a queen size bed that pulls out from the starboard lounge, providing some overflow accommodation or a skipper’s berth. The flybridge is an extension of the social spaces in the M64 with a port side wet bar and Juliet aft deck with optional fixed or loose loungers.

SOCIAL COCKPIT

The M64 comes standard with a fixed aft platform, or you can add on an additional 1.4m hydraulic rise and fall platform, which gives you a massive aft deck or an area to launch tenders. The central island transom comes complete with a bbq area as well as access to the lazarette. But this is more than a simple lazarette, and it is spacious enough to stow a tender. A large section of the cockpit sole can be raised on electric actuators should you need more significant access to the lazarette. While the review boat employed the Euro transom option, owners can also opt for either an island or fishing transom layout. Bi-fold doors completely open up the cockpit from the main saloon area to a large galley with Caesar stone surfaces and an island bench that houses the F&P dish drawer plus loads of storage. There is also a full-size fridge/freezer, large pantry and Miele oven. If you are going to spend a lot of time aboard then, you need a substantial yet practical galley, and the M64 certainly has that. The galley has been designed as an integral part of the social design of the M64, and like the rest of the boat, there are a lot of owner options, especially when it comes to the Miele packages. Opposite, under the open tread internal staircase, is the entertainment centre complete with pop-up TV, plus with another freezer and icemaker. There is a sumptuous lounger forward and access to the accommodation spaces. The M64 is very much an Australian designed motor yacht and is the second largest in the Maritimo M Series. Shortly after my sea trials on the Gold Coast, the M64 was due to be shipped to Canada to its new owner. Along with New Zealand, the North American market has been proving extremely popular for the Maritimo brand and the M Series especially, with the two markets accounting for half of the brand’s international exports.

GENESIS RESTORATION

A NEW BEGINNING Braden Weber went looking for a boat to suit his family boating requirements, he settled on a well-used Genesis 3100 Export, but not before a major rebuild and repower. Looking pristine like a brand new ’30 plus year old’ boat.

Genesis is one of the most iconic names in Kiwi production boat building, and they are certainly one of the most popular brands on the used boat market. The name Genesis had been around since 1974, and over the years gained an excellent reputation as custom boatbuilders under the leadership of Basil Pollock. In 1984, son Chris formed a new company, Genesis Marine and in the following year, he released their first all-fibreglass production cruiser, the soft-top Genesis 3100. The boat was an instant hit with those looking for a fast, economical cruiser and indelibly branded the Genesis name to the performance cruiser concept. Thirty-six of the boats were sold before it was superseded by the 320 in 1990.

While the majority of the 3100s were sport sedans, either with hardtops or open, there were a few flybridge cruisers built off the same hull mould. While this never proved a popular model, they offered another option to those that didn’t want a sedan style boat. Pre the ’90. Flybridge boats ruled, and the sports sedans were still an emerging style. With the Genesis 3100, the company accelerated the growth of sport sedans and right through until the company closed in, 2009 well over 90% of the more than 300 boats built were non flybridge. When Gulf Harbour based boat builder, Braden Weber from Weber Marine went looking for a small launch that would satisfy his fishing and family boating requirements. He found a wellWWW.P OWERBOAT MAGAZINE .C O .NZ 57

Another significant change was taking the cockpit back 1.2m and including a drop down transom.

used Genesis 3100 Export that suited his needs. “When I first saw the boat I knew it needed a lot of work, but it was all quite doable, and over the next 12 months I worked on it alongside our paying jobs”, said Braden. When he got the boat, it already had the interior lining and upholstery stripped, with a mass of glue residue all over the hull sides and bulkheads. The timberwork needed attention, the Formica benchtop was curling, and all the upholstery needed to be replaced. Even the electronics had seen their used-by date. “I loved the interior layout as it suited what I was looking for, for my family of three kids and so didn’t plan to make too many alterations inside apart from a total repaint and refurb”, says Braden. Corian replaced the Formica benchtop, and

58 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

the interior was given a new paint job with International semi gloss reaction lacquer. Braden took the boat down the coast to Whitianga to get Willie Jones from Marine Upholstery & Covers to do all the upholstery. This included hull and deck linings, squabs, helm trim, covers and carpet. The result is the interior now looks like a new boat, although there is still some resemblance of the traditional style of the era when the boat was built. “We didn’t want to totally modernise it so we styled the cupboard and drawer facings as they were in that era , although we did add a new Force 10 oven and Isotherm fridge”, adds Braden. The new dash was fitted with a pair of Furuno TZ Touch 12”, Furuno autopilot, plus controls for the Zipwakes (new), Maxwell anchoring system (original) and Maxpower bow thruster (new). A full

costly exercise, and probably overcapitalise the boat. As a boat builder, this didn’t concern Braden, so as soon as the boat arrived at his yard in Gulf Harbour, he lifted the deck off and turn the hull over. The first job was to strip the original foam core off and replace it with 20mm balsa core, which was then sheathed with fibreglass. The stringers were glassed over, and a 12mm layer of foam was applied to the hull sides. “This not only stiffened the boat and helped stop any racking of the cabinetry which always causes joint cracks, but it also provided extra noise retention when underway”, added Braden. Once all that was complete, the deck was dropped back on, and work started on the flybridge. The cabin height was raised 50mm, and new profile windows were fitted which were longer and

Fusion entertainment package adds the necessary sound, and all the lighting was changed to Hella LED. All the wiring was replaced, with1500w inverter added and a larger battery bank. The electrical work was carried out by Angus Small Electrical. Plumbing in the boat was replaced, so everything is fresh and as Braden says, “Just like a brand new boat”.

HULL ISSUES

However, more importantly, the hull had to be given a complete make-over. One of the reasons the previous owner sold the boat was because of the severe delamination in the hull, caused by years of water ingress into the core. For him to pay someone to repair it was going to be a very

higher. A new sliding door with two drop-down panels was designed for the aft bulkhead. The original boat had an angled bulkhead, but the new alloy/glass section, built by Alitech Window Systems has been made vertical and has added a little more space. Braden also built an overhang off the rear of the flybridge for some weather protection in the cockpit. The boat was sprayed in Awlcraft 2000 with International Micro AP antifouling and Propspeed on the underwater running gear.

EXTENDED COCKPIT

A clip-on ladder makes entry and exit from the water a simple task. “We have virtually doubled the size of the cockpit, and overall added less than 200 kgs to the boat, without upsetting the balance or ride, which is a real bonus”, says Braden. Upstairs the flybridge station has changed very little with just the necessary engine controls and no repeated electronics. “The new Furuno MFDs lets me mirror everything onto my phone or iPad, so that’s all I need when I am steering from above, and it saves exposing the electronics to the weather”, says Braden.

Another significant change from the original 3100 Export was taking the transom back 1.2m. This was done with extensions either side of the stern drive, so there was no requirement to make any positional changes to the Volvo Penta drive. “I was concerned that if I moved the transom back too far, I might have a boat with too much bow down attitude, but now we have run the boat I known I could have added at least another 200mm quite safely”, says Braden. Even though the extensions have added 200 kilos of buoyancy, the boat still floats to virtually the same marks as previous. However, Braden adds that the extra weight of the new engine and the extension balances out the additional buoyancy. The seating has been altered with a bench seat either side in the front of the cockpit, with a couple of removable chilly/isky bins and storage built-in. Where the transom used to be, there is now a live bait tank to port and storage locker to starboard.

UPPING THE HORSEPOWER

As Braden uses the boat for fishing and family boating, he designed a multi-purpose transom. When fishing, the transom is up and fixed in place, and then when the family is onboard, it folds down and opens the cockpit to the water.

60 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

When Braden took delivery of the boat, it had a single Volvo Penta KAD42 230hp with a DPE sterndrive. Top speed was around 20 knots. Braden swapped this for a Volvo Penta D6/330 with a new DPH sterndrive. The speed has increased to about 30 knots. Braden says he cruises anywhere from 16-25 knots and the fuel curve doesn’t change much from 2 litres per nautical mile. The engine space was stripped and repainted, with the fuel tanks retained either side of the new Volvo Penta D6/330. Forman insulation material helps to keep everything as quiet as possible. Overall the alterations to the boat have worked out perfectly for Braden and his family. It is an excellent example of what can be done to transform a 35-year-old boat and give it a fresh, clean look, while still retaining some traditional features.

SEALEGS 7.5M HYDRASOL

BOAT REVIEW

SEALEGS 7.5M HYDRASOL Being able to drop the boat on its side makes getting on and off very simple.

have experienced the Sealegs as a cameraman at several highperformance regattas where they indeed come into their own.

The single riskiest part of an on water cameraman’s job is the transition of equipment from the beach in the waves and wind soaking wet to the boat to spend countless hours shivering from the most always damp experience and the Sealegs has always made this a dry and enjoyable experience. However, I have always thought that for casual weekend boating they were more a status toy than a genuine contender for the average kiwi family, who just uses a trailer at a boat ramp. How wrong I was. Our test started at the sunny and envious spot of Takapuna boat ramp. Little did I know due to the trailer length of a 7.5m boat Takapuna wasn’t ideal to launch this boat, so the team from Sealegs had put her in the water at Browns Bay and skedaddled around to Takapuna. I arrived to find all eyes focused in one direction. A beautifully finished social orientated party boat with all the trimmings sitting on her hull bathing in the January sunlight. I have to admit my first impression was wow. We quickly loaded the equipment I needed, which with the drone and camera bag does take up quite a bit of space, and usually, it’s a nail-biting experience on a RIB as I’m always cautious of getting the gear wet. Not today though as this boat has two huge bins under the rear social seats and everything was quickly stowed away to remain dry throughout.

64 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

Impressive Layout

We quickly and effortlessly got on the water. The day was pristine, and I had the usual slight feeling of guilt where it would have been nice to test this machine on a typical Auckland fresh sou’wester, wind against tide day. Once we were on the water, it struck me how amazing the layout is. It’s a wide boat at 2.71m, which allows you to move around the console with ease. So many boats you have to walk on the tubes, bum shuffle around or walk on a tightrope to move from the helm forward. This is a welcome change from classic RIB boating and is a true testament to how the team took a fresh look at what they wanted. Not just the usual refinements on top of the last design like so many other manufacturers, but a clean, new and exciting design. The basic layout is typical of large RIBs. Forward there is an anchor locker, with plenty of room for a manual anchor and large warp. It is not possible to have a through hull system as that’s where the wheel is. The centre console has a 2x1 layout at the helm and a two-person cushion on the front of the console with storage underneath. Moving aft, we are treated to something truly special. An oversize T top covers the helm and the social area to keep kiwis safe from the harmful UV. There’s also a well appointed sink with 20l of freshwater, fridge, rubbish bin and drawers stocked with glassware, utensils and everything you need to have an enjoyable day on the water. The fridge will

even hold a wine bottle standing and the drawers I’m sure will house a nice bottle of rum or gin if that’s your fancy. Aft there are two large bin seats with backrests which allows four people to enjoy a comfortable afternoon tucked away in the bay of your choice. I really can see myself in Garden Cove having popped over to the winery for some Pinot Noir and cheeses having a good company relaxing afternoon. Hang on a minute I’m on a RIB…. This isn’t a Gin Palace… but is it. It is about now I’m starting to see what Sealegs have tried to achieve and to be fair they have done very well. Gone are the days of a quick ham and cheese sandwich or the good old One Square Meal. We have now got the ability with these new lifestyle’s of Keto, Vegan and seafood and eat it where you can prepare your meals, enjoy good company and soak up the views on a RIB. By day the social area has all the sunshade you need, and into the evening and night, there are mood lights, LED deck lights and of course the all-important underwater swim lights. It’s genuinely a superyacht slimmed down into a practical boat. When you run out of supplies there is no need to get the chinos wet, you simply put the wheels down, drive up the beach, wander into town, restock and repeat. Exceptional.

Foolproof

Down to business. The helm is well appointed, and straight away I’m struck by the lack of levers. Sealegs

of yesterday had a complex array of levers and having watched volunteers master them slowly was always something of a putoff. As was the aesthetics of something closer to a bobcat. Not anymore. A simple custom designed push button panel runs all the hydraulics. With a brief instruction from Sealegs, I was underway in and out of the water. Simple to use, foolproof to operate. Fantastic. The helm seats move up and down and have shock absorbing technology in them. The helm houses an MFD, Fusion stereo, VHF and all the much needed toys. Interestingly the large engine box that was on Sealegs of yesterday has gone and is now housed in the centre console. The Hydrasol option with a Briggs and Stratton 35hp petrol engine is comfortably housed and breathes through Hydrophobic material on the sides of the console and exhaust through a hull fitting, so there are no nasty fumes. In a stroke of brilliance, both the wheels and the outboard use the same fuel source, so no mistakes at the end of the day running out of gas before you come out of the water. There is an electric Electrosol option as well which is powered by a 7kwh battery and a 1.5hr runtime which should be enough for a weekends use. On the water I was surprised at the getup and go she had. At 1900kgs, the 7.5m alloy RIB is not the lightest on the market, and I was curious to see how it handled. We had three POB and a fair amount of gear, so the boat was typically loaded. In my typical all or nothing fashion, once clear of the ramp and 5 knot zone it was time to stretch her legs. Throttles up,

its holeshot was a little over 7 seconds with the Yamaha 200hp. Once we were on the plane trimmed ¾ down at 4000 rpm we had a very comfortable 22 knots. The engine was ticking over nicely, the boat felt rigid, and the ride was to die for. A short hop into the Gulf we found some wake from fishing vessels and a container ship and true to form the Sealegs did not disappoint. It effortlessly cut through the container ship wake offering a dry and safe entry and exit from the waves. There was no banging typical of alloy RIBs, but the weight and excellent sound deadening with the beautiful U Deck Floor added to the experience. Into the turns, she performed with grace and was as agile as can be expected from a 7.5m boat. The helm station is not hugely tall, offering excellent all-round visibility for the skipper. At WOT the boat produced 37 knots at 80l/hr.

Into the beach, we effortlessly put the wheels down, came up the sand and lowered the boat onto its side. This brings me to another great point. When diving, offloading the catch or for the smaller or less able boaties being able to drop down onto one side reducing the height to climb in is very special indeed. A real consideration for many of us from a practical purpose to the ahh ageing boaties. On the water, a side mounted and fitted boarding ladder is an option and if at the beach you can climb aboard in the raised position by climbing on the wheel and the using the step built into the transom. Time for a coffee I thought. Again an experience that you wouldn’t normally consider. Many hours spent on RIBs would normally have me reaching for the thermos as having to anchor and wade into the beach for a good coffee would typically be in the too-hard basket. Not with a Sealegs though. Back at the ramp driving the boat on the trailer is a simple and effortless affair and without the queue for the ramp a much nicer experience. I was out on my boat a week or so later at Gulf Harbour sitting in a queue for over an hour pondering how amazing it would be to have just launched at Stanmore Bay and driven a Sealegs onto the trailer and have been warming the BBQ up by the time we even reached the sea wall. Never mind the 2km walk to the car to fetch the trailer. Overall I was very humbled to have experienced the Sealegs 7.5m Hydrasol. It has responded well to the needs and wants of the modern Kiwi boatie. It has creature comforts with great social areas. It responds to American and European designs with nicely appointed seating, cold storage, equipment storage, sunshades, sprung seating while underway and lighting for extended hours of boating. For a RIB it’s a stroke of excellence. The centre mounted engine for the wheels is also smartly designed to assist with the boats centre of gravity, Nicely appointed floors and finishing makes this a genuine contender for the family day boat community. Unfortunately, there is no loo, but with the wheels one is never far away. In my true fashion, I did note there was not a rod holder to be found. Sealegs assures me they can be fitted and a bait board is an option as well. For the social version, I could easily see some canvas covers made for the plush seating for the boys fishing excursions. A commercial option with seating for up to 8 and an all-rounder version that removes the entertainment suite and replaces with a rear facing two person bench seat are also available. I know which version I would pick hands down – the Social Version.

VEN BACK IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES, THE GRADY WHITE BOATS STOOD OUT FROM THE REST FOR THEIR DESIGN AND HIGH STANDARD OF FINISH.

Today after sixty years of production Grady White is still a privately owned company and still stand out from the rest. It’s well worth googling Grady White and watching the video on their 60-year history. Named one of the 25 greatest offshore saltwater sportfishing boats of the past 20 years, the 33-foot express cabin boat Express 330 recently was completely redesigned with an emphasis on seating, cabin amenities and interior lighting. Not only is the 330 a premiere sportfishing boat, but it’s also a great family boat and overnight cruiser. It’s all very well looking at a boat, but the true test is to get out on the water for a day and put it through its paces. Even better would be staying away on the Grady White 330 for a few days as it is well set up below with two double bunks galley toilet and shower. Sitting on a hydraulically braked tri-axle

trailer this is a very big trailer boat by any standards and all be it trailerable, [see LTSA regulations] mostly it would be in either a dry stack or on a marina. My first impression of the Grady White 330 as I walked down the dock was of a sizeable boat, with clean, sleek lines, massive curved one-piece screen to the slight deck angle to allow water to drain overboard quickly. the desire to be able to get out wide to chase Marlin at the drop of a sinker when a weather window appears. Today being time short from fishing local waters to offshore seamounts this is one hell of a go-fast boat designed to get where you want and back quickly, in safety, comfort and style but also has the stay away capabilities for a few days. With just a touch of the throttles, the twin Yamaha V8s glide the GW 330 effortlessly onto the plane leaving a clean wash astern at a very impressive 28-30 knots cruising speed. Top speed is 46 knots. Ideal cruise is around 3800 rpm which returns a respectable 3.8 lpnm /9.5 lph and still running at close to 27 knots, with a range around 300nm. The owner’s party trick is at full speed to put the Grady White into a full hard-on turn. I even did this myself a few times and not once did it cavitate or let go giving you the feeling of total control at all times.

From a central pedestal helm seat, the skipper has a virtually unobstructed 360-degree view from the bow to the transom. All switches, gauges and screens are visible at a glance and within easy reach. There is very comfortable seating on either side of the helm, as it is on all the seat and loungers throughout the boat. One simple feature that stood out for me was the hatch at the top of the windscreen that allows a flow of fresh air to cool and keep the crew alert when trolling on long hot summer days.

GRADY WHITE FISHING TRIP At the push of a button, a console in the centre of the dash rises to reveal a full set of Garmin electronics. Two 16-inch screens give the options of separate chart plotter sounder and radar or a combination of the three options. Transducer positioning is critical, even at 30 knots, and the sounder showed little interference with a near-perfect bottom display.

FISHING COCKPIT

Fifty years of building high-end sportfishing boats are evident the second you glance around the cockpit. Designed to fish out wide in big water, I noted many small but essential little things, such as no sharp edges with every corner rounded off for safety. Padded bolsters surround the cockpit at the ideal height for leading or gaffing fish. The cockpit sole extends under the coamings giving anglers a secure foothold when playing fish off the side of the boat. The washdown hose is to port, and big scupper drains are aft on either side of the cockpit. They will not only clear any water quickly, but the grates also prevent them from getting blocked by fish scales. Rod storage is not an issue on the Grady White, with rod holders across the transom and on the side decks, plus an additional six holders on the hardtop stanchions. Although not on board or needed at the time, a game chair can be fitted in the middle of the cockpit. This leaves plenty of room either side for the crew to move around. Using the outriggers and the deck rod holders, one can run a wide pattern

of lures when trolling, and when not required the telescopic outriggers fit neatly out of the way under the coamings. On top of the cabin roof are also three adjustable rod holders to enable lures to be run as shotguns, well clear of the other lures. Perfect when targeting tuna. Two tuna tubes are conveniently located at the transom on the port side alongside a massive insulated icebox to hold the catches such as tuna or kingfish. Well thought out is a partition to hold spare bags of ice. Stepping down from the helm station behind to starboard there is a large live bait tank, again a well thought out finer point is the ends of the tank on the inside are round, allowing the live baits to last longer as they can swim without getting knocked about. Most important, on the port side is a very convenient stainless steel cockpit fridge levitating the need to go into the

cabin with fishy clothes. Teak decking on the bridge and cockpit floor and transom gives firm, secure footing, especially when playing game fish on stand up gear. At the stern on the starboard side are the most impressive hinges I have seen on a transom door which allows easy access onto the transom, where you can walk between the motors. A concern that some would think could be an issue is drowning the two big V8 450 hp Yamaha outboards when backing down on a big fish, but the reality is that with the speed and manoeuvrability of the Grady White is such that the fish will be played off the aft quarter till it is alongside. Facing down into the cockpit is an excellent array of LED lighting to flood the cockpit at party time or should a tussle with a big fish go long into the night. Talking of party time, there is an ingenious aft seat that folds away when

not required, so takes no cockpit space but folded out provides extra seating. Two removable bait boards can be set either side of the cockpit to minimise congestion and clutter when cutting bait or rigging lures.

FISHABILITY

No matter if you are drift fishing in the Motuihe Channel or 30 miles off the coast live baiting for broadbill or marlin, a boat needs to be stable and predictable, and the Grady White certainly gives you that stable big boat feel. Out for a bottom fish in the Hauraki Gulf, we chased the workups targeting snapper and kahawai. We drifted with soft baits, and Kubra lures, and when the workups died, we decided to anchor and baitfish. From the helm, you have a clear, unobstructed view of the anchor and Maxwell winch which is remotely operated.

The beam and size of the cockpit are what we all dream of, with bait boards mounted midships either side of the cockpit you can fish six people without getting in anyone’s way and still have room to make a bee-line to the cockpit fridge. The snapper and trevally that came on board were quickly iked and laid on salt ice, out of the sun in the transom icebox to chill and be filleted on the way home. Even at speed on the way back the Grady White 330 effortlessly sliced through the waves and ferry wakes while I filleted the days catch. Washing down the cockpit, the substantial scuppers drains easily coped with the scales and mess, leaving just quick freshwater wash off once alongside the dock. All in all, this is one hell of an impressive boat that ideally suits the needs of those with limited time but a passion for fishing — fast, furious with the ability and capability of covering all bases. My only criticism would be the anchor chain is to short and worst of all I can’t afford to buy a Grady White 330.

RIVIERA 505 SUV

Fast cruising at 29 knots was done comfortably on the 505 SUV.

M

ezzanine is a word not often associated with motorboats, yet it’s a clever design idea that Riviera has deployed in the creation of this 17m sports motor cruiser. Utilising outdoor space for

multiple purposes further enhances the versatility of these sports utilities, that attempt to be all things to all people. For instance, having enough torque to pull a water toy, yet with a decent range to make that coastal hop and of course a sturdy hull to do it in bumpy conditions; are just some of the boxes these type of boats must tick. Of course, 40 years of production and building 5,600 boats in that time does give Riviera a fairly good insight into how this is done, as director of marketing Stephen Milne explained to me while we motored though the Gold Coast Broadwater on hull number one of the 505 SUV: “The majority of our boats now are sports yachts, which reflects where the market is going.” Yet another statistic is the company’s expertise in pod driven transmissions, having built in excess of 1,000 Volvo IPS driven boats, so the level of integration with hull shape means these cruisers are slippery and fast. For the 505 SUV Riviera knew they had to differentiate this model sufficiently, both to contrast it against it smaller 395 and 445 siblings and the larger 545 and 575 models, so they started from scratch by creating a completely new hull. Standing beside it at Runaway Bay marina, I noted the metallic grey hull’s higher topsides yet with sweeping sheerline and most

78 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

apparent was the large elongated hull windows that give abundant natural light to the three cabins. Fuller forward sections was another major change, so instead of a bowsprit, the entire rode is neatly integrated into the bow. Yet another change from its siblings is the neatly vented exhausts, hidden by elongated exits at the stern quarters. However, the overall effect clearly shows it’s a Riviera, an important factor to senior owners stepping down from its flybridge models and of course new buyers seeking a premium quality sports motor cruiser.

Amazing Mezzanine

The aft cockpit is stepped and separated by bulkhead to create a mezzanine layout below the fibreglass overhang. “We’d also see people sleeping out here by simply unfolding the bench to create a two person day or night bed,” said Stephen Milne. This is an allweather area and this first hull - destined for the Great Lakes in America - was fitted with clear plastics to seal this inner cockpit. Alternatively, sun worshippers can step beyond it to the outer cockpit where there’s a barbecue and wet bar; or relax on the hydraulic swim platform. Dual transom doors that fold back, along with moveable handrails gives good versatility to the swim platform, that can easily house a rubber dinghy; although it would be exposed when offshore. Back in the mezzanine, diners have a folding teak table with Sunbrella fabric bench seating and that fold-out double bench. Twin opening skylights ensure good ventilation or a few extra rays but also have blinds, and privacy comes from patterned side windows.

Sun Soaked Saloon

Australian’s have a complex relationship with the sun, so our boats have to reflect this; something Riviera are experts at. Vertical bulkheads, fibreglass overhangs and ventilation are the key points for this, and all found on the 505 SUV. Opening the sturdy chromed sliding door reveals the saloon with U-shaped galley portside. Another step takes you to the lounge, so clearly demarcated from the galley. Here, the U-shaped leather clad dinette with another wide bench on starboard creates a convivial entertaining area. Usefully, the table unfolds and has swivels to suite the number seated. For cocktail hour an Ottoman seat converts into a low table so your G+T is secured. The saloon is airy thanks to opening side windows (with blinds) and a large sunroof. Returning aft into the galley shows a well-equipped cooking space, with deep sink, two ring electric hob, dishwasher and a microwave convection oven The joinery was done with absolute precision in high gloss walnut. Clearly, these boats are built to last, so maintain the value of your asset should you ever sell.

Drivers Seat

Given that SUVs must also be drivers boats, the 505 again comes up trumps with its stylish steering console. Twin leather Recaro bucket seats house skipper and co-skipper, sensibly shaded by Riviera’s

signature stylish visor which ensures the Garmin Glass Bridge instrumentation is daylight viewable. There’s twin 17” screens for navigation and another for the Volvo engine controls plus the essential autopilot. Throttles and the IPS joystick are nearby as are the Volvo vertical trim tab controls that can be auto or manual. All other systems are managed by the CZone screen and digital bus controls. For entertainment, a television is against the aft bulkhead of the saloon or in party mode, pump-up the volume of the Fusion hifi that’s piped throughout the 505.

Midships Owner’s Cabin

The higher topsides of this model ensures ample volume throughout the three cabin and two bathrooms, with the owner enjoying the full beam midships berth. The high sheer at the bow also gives the VIP cabin an airiness so there’s plenty to like on the 505. A wide central corridor beside the helm leads below to the three cabins. Whereas the 525’s Achilles heel was its lack of grand suite, the 505 has remedied this. The owner now enjoys a full beam master cabin with spacious ensuite thanks to the compact IPS gearboxes creating space aft. However, the forepeak VIP cabin is also a force to be reckoned with as well, thanks to a vast overhead space, portlights and an equally spacious ensuite bathroom. This has dual access so that the third cabin

Stylish ergonomics at the console along with a double helm Recaro seats. The galley is well equipped so the 505 is more than a mere weekender. Entertaining or relaxing, the 505 mezzanine cockpit has the seating and equipment for both activities. The full beam master cabin maximises space with just enough headroom.

Decked Out

Yet another requirement for a successful SUV is usable deck space, so wide walkways on each side of the 505 are welcome, as are the 316 stainless handrails that guide me to the bow. Here, again the changes have been wrung, with an elevated bulkhead (to ensure headroom below) with shallow lockers around the double sunbed. Given that fuss-free anchoring is a major part of this style of boat, Riviera has ensured that the rode is adequate for all conditions, thanks to a deep locker that avoids chain build-ups and an oversized electric Muir windlass/capstan with manual override to control the quality Ultra anchor that’s integrated into the bow. Equally good is the large cleating midships and all round for when you go alongside the fuel dock. Hull construction continues in the well-proven hand-laid laminated technique with solid GRP around keel and other key underwater areas. Elsewhere, its cored laminate on decks and cabin top to maximise insulation. Structure includes watertight collision bulkheads and wide longitudinals, while the outer skin is vinylester to prevent osmosis. Engine access is via the aft cockpit with another hatch behind it for the optional Seakeeper 12 stabiliser fitted to our review boat. Climbing down the steps reveals a spacious engine room with pride of place given to the twin Volvo D11 725HPs and key oilways and filters easily accessed around them. Standard are the 600HP models, and Riviera assured me that both could break the 30 knot speed barrier.

Broadwater Cruise

Sitting at the wheel, I gazed out among the myriad of craft on the Gold Coast Broadwater as the 505 SUV propelled me towards the misty skyline at Surfers Paradise, so it wasn’t until some cardinal marks flew past the window that I realised we were doing 29 knots; such was the quiet and smooth ride afforded. My only input had been to push the throttles, as the vertical tabs automatically trimmed our bow down until retracting to minimise drag. Acres of window space also added to the effortless feel, inducing me to throw the 505 into a tight turn, while quickly glancing aft to check for other vessels. This velocity also was the cruising speed for the 505, so I noted the fuel consumption as being 232 litres per hour (for a range of 420 miles) before I pushed the throttles down to check if the 505 was a real sports cruiser, so able to break the 30 knot barrier; which it did with ease before maxing out at 34 knots. Predictable handling such as gently healing into turns, is a Riviera trait, as is the solid feel of the hull as it slammed into the wakes of other vessels. Finally, slowing side-on to the stiff breeze I manoeuvred us towards a mooring at South Stradbroke island with a few turns of the joystick, just to remind me how this technology is intuitive and so impressive, as was the entire Riviera 505 SUV package.

UCKLANDERS heading to and from the Bay tend to break the trip into three parts, Kawau, Whangarei or Tutukaka and then straight to the Bay, the reverse on the way south, with the destination as the focus. Well, you’re missing out, big time. The coast from Whangarei to Cape Brett offers some fantastic cruising with safe anchorages, great diving, fabulous fishing, sandy beaches and much more. Now if that description doesn’t get your cruising taste buds humming, you don’t deserve a boat.

BY LAND This part of the Northland coast is also easily accessed from land with numerous camping grounds, boat ramps and safe places to swim and explore by Kayak. Heading south from The Bay take the Old Russell Road or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous the Rawhiti Rd to Whangaruru and Bland Bay. Heading south the road takes you to Whananaki and Rangitapu before getting to Tutukaka. All of these places have fabulous white sand beaches and a place to pitch a tent, park the Caravan or launch the boat. 84 PACIFIC POWERBOAT JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2020

BY SEA Making your way south by boat takes a little longer. Heading out of The Bay around Cape Brett, the first stop is Whangamumu. Site of an old Whaling station this used to be a busy place. With Russell, which was known as the hell hole of the South Pacific, just around the corner, skippers of the whaling fleet preferred to drop anchor here. The whales were harpooned from oar driven whaling dorys’ with directions given to the boats from the headlands on either side of the harbour. The catch was then towed back to the factory for processing. The remains of the facility are fun to explore, and there are several walks, the two lookouts among them. Although Whangamumu is not served by road, there is a walking track to the Rawhiti Rd which takes about 45 minutes each way, and there are tracks on both the north and south peninsulas. The northern trail connects to the Brett walk as well as the lookout. The anchorage is safe in all-weather but does suffer from groundswell in North to Southeast winds; we find the Bay in the south-east corner best if there is a swell running. Holding is good throughout the Bay; avoid leaving in brisk NE winds as the entrance faces open ocean. The area is part of the Bay of Islands Maritime Park so keep an ear out for fire restrictions & of course pack out your rubbish. Fifteen Miles south of Whangamumu is Whangaruru Harbour.

DROP DEAD GORGEOUS This whole area is drop dead gorgeous. Bland Bay, just north of Whangaruru, is a great day spot with a white sand beach and good holding on a hard sand bottom. Tuck into the Bay on the SE corner but watch your depth. On the way into and out of Bland Bay watch out for Danger Rock and the isolated obstruction on the southern side of the entrance to the Bay plus it’s neighbour just to the south, these are of particular concern when moving from Bland Bay to Whangaruru Harbour. There is a boat ramp and public camping area on the isthmus. Whangaruru Harbour has several great anchorages and is a haven even in extreme conditions. We sat out a 50 knot easterly blow here in Puriri Bay without difficulty. The holding is good sand mud in about 4m at low water. There is a DoC camp ashore with fresh water, toilets and shower facilities. A track leads to the top of the hill from here, then onto Cape Home where you are treated to spectacular views of the coast. There are excellent facilities available in the area. Oakura, on the western side of the harbour, has shops and fuel plus another campground and there are dozens of great walks. With good shelter, we usually use Whangaruru as a base for day trips to some of the surrounding bays. As mentioned Bland Bay is just north of Whangaruru and to the south is Mimiwhangata and Whananaki. Mimiwhangata has that wonderful remote feel to it, the area is a DoC Coastal Park, so there is access from the land as well, but in all the times we have anchored here we have rarely seen people ashore other than from neighbouring boats. There is a good loop track, around the headland to Okupe Beach, which is open to the ocean and a great swimming and snorkelling spot. Further south at the entrance to Whananaki, is Elizabeth Reef. Watch this one, it’s nasty, unmarked and sticks out further than you think, the outer obstruction is over a mile seaward from the headland. Anchorage in settled conditions can be found in 2.5m of water just around the headland, and a run up the river by dinghy is a must. No trip ashore at Whananaki wouldn’t be complete without a stop for ice cream. While Mimiwhangata is a reasonable overnight anchorage in settled conditions, Whananaki should be regarded as a day stop only. 86 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

WHANGARURU BAY

TANTALISING TOOTS The next stop, Tutukaka, about 25 miles south of Whangaruru. Watch the entry here if there is an easterly swell running and steer to the leads to stay out of trouble. Once into the harbour the best anchorage is SE of Philip Island, or if you had the good sense to book early, you might have been lucky enough to get a slot at the Tutukaka Marina. The holding off Philip Island is good if you can tuck in far enough, but the bottom is rock and shale in the main channel and hard to get a hold in. In calm or offshore conditions, the small Bay directly opposite makes a great spot to drop the pick. The rest of the harbour is generally too shallow to be useful. There is an excellent walk to the light on the south gable. The start of the trail is just behind the Public Restrooms opposite the game fish club then follows the DoC signs. If you want to complete the walk right out onto Kukutauwhae Island its best done at low tide, otherwise be prepared to get wet. The views all along this track are outstanding. Take care to hide the credit card before you arrive here as there is some great boutique shopping in Toots. There’s a general store (behind the main waterfront building), access to fuel ( the fuel berth is on the eastern end of the marina, behind the breakwater), water, some great restaurants, the Game Fish Club, accommodation and several dive operators.

CRAYS, WRECKS & THE KNIGHTS The diving along this entire coast is incredible. Cray’s abound, there are scallops in the sandy shallows, and there are some world-renowned wreck sites. The former HMNZS Tui is resting at 34-58.8 South and 174-32.29 East, just north of Tutukaka and the Waikato now rests in water 28m deep at 35,39.165 South and 174,32.670 East, Just south of Toot’s in Ngunguru Bay. The HMNZS Tui and HMNZS Waikato are large exnavy vessels specially prepared for adventure diving before being sunk at diver friendly depths. Purpose cut access and exit points allow exploration of guns, bridges, control areas, helicopter hangar, engine rooms, cabins and crew areas. The Piece de resistance, though, is the Poor Knights Islands. The Poor Knights are a marine reserve and best dived with a competent dive operator. Lying about 18 miles northeast of Tutukaka it takes about 45 minutes to get out there in one of the fast dive boats. There are numerous dives here depending on the tide, swell and wind but one not to be missed is Blue Maomao Mayhem at the famous Blue Maomao Arch. Stingrays congregate annually in huge numbers here, using the arches for protection from Orca. Next stop south is the Whangarei Harbour. Often avoided by boaties heading past, this harbour has plenty to offer. Coming down the coast if there’s any swell running it’s best to stay offshore. Closer to Whangarei Heads keep outside Mauitaha Island, the outer Bream Island just north of Bream Head. Care should be taken to avoid Bream Rock which lies 700 meters ENE of Mauitaha Island and at a depth of just 3.3m breaks in heavy weather.

MARVELLOUS MARSDEN COVE If you’d prefer a bit more civilisation, the Marsden Cove Marina is a great choice. The entrance is on the western side of the harbour just past the main commercial wharf and leads to the yacht basin and services area. In busy periods you’ll need to book but give the office a call anyway as they’re very good at finding a spot for you. Once there try out the Land and Sea Cafe for a meal. They open at 8 am for coffee and breakfast and during the busy periods, stay open for dinner too. The Marina has an easy access fuel berth pump out, and trailer ramp, the chandlery, marine and engineering supplies have a full selection. There’s an excellent general store and bakery. Ladies, you can also pamper yourself at Reflections Hair and Beauty, and if mechanical repairs are needed, there’s Marsden Cove Marine and a fully serviced haul out and hardstand. Having spent a good week to 10 days getting to Whangarei from the Bay you’ll head home, with any luck, looking to spend a bit more time on this coast next year. In the meantime, safe boating, a calm anchorage and not too many sundowners.

TOOTS ANCHORAGE PHILIP IS.

SCALLOPS ON SNORKEL Rounding Bream Head, past Peach Cove and Smugglers Bay, which both have beautiful sandy beaches and are good in Northerly winds, Busby Head marks the eastern side of the Whangarei Harbour entrance channel. Watch the current here mainly on the outgoing tide as a 3-knot current is not unusual. Just north is Home Point then east into Urquarts Bay which is lovely in everything except West to Souwesterlies or if there’s a large SE swell running at the entrance this tends to bend into the Bay. If you’re a fan of Scallops, the Calliope Bank is a great spot to try your luck in depths that a bag can be filled using just a mask and snorkel. If there’s bad weather forecast head past the main wharf area towards Parua Bay on the eastern side of the harbour and sling the hook at “The Nook” a beautiful spot with excellent holding in 2.5m at low tide. 88 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

BOAT REVIEW

FI-GLASS FIRESTAR

Family Friendly

90 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

While the Firestar model has been around since the late 1960s, the current model is obviously a far different boat than the one first released by Fi-Glass over 50 years ago. However, it does share one very poignant link with its predecessor, being the last hull to be designed by the late Fi-Glass founder, Frank Simpson.

Fi-Glass has a reputation for building wholesome, ell founded family trailer boats. WWW.P OWERBOAT MAGAZINE .C O .NZ 91

BOAT REVIEW

FI-GLASS FIRESTAR

The layout of the Firestar and all Fi-Glass models is practical and unpretentious. Seating options are varied between back to backs and pedestals. Add a central squab, and you have seating for three across the transom.

I

t was the first of his new theory about designing a hull with a variable longitudinal deadrise, with a fine entry and low planning speed. It indeed slips onto the plane very quickly, and it’s a boat that will not throw up any surprises for a novice boat owner. Set the trim to position five, and you can just about leave it there all the time without having to worry about sorting out the engine trim. The Firestar is essentially a cabin version of the Senator runabout which while they share the same hull have a completely different internal layout. Griff Simpson, MD of Fi-Glass Boats, says that following the success of the Senator, they added a cabin to the hull to open up a broader customer base. In fact, since the first of the new generation Firestar’s was released in 1999, over 450 have been sold. I have had the privilege of reviewing just about every model Fi-Glass has produced since the early 1970s, and many of those were with Frank, either in Auckland or Christchurch, but I also got to test in the Marlborough Sounds, Queenstown and Rotorua.

Best Laid Plans

Recently when I was looking through our archives and preparing to load over 800 boat reviews onto our new website, I saw a gap in our Fi-Glass list. It seems I had never reviewed the new model Firestar. A quick trip to Christchurch soon fixed 92 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

that. The plan was not only to take the latest model for a run but also a late 1960s version that Fi-Glass just happened to have in their yard. Well as they say ‘the best-laid plans’. The older version was there, but the engine wasn’t so all I was able to do was have a quick look over the original 4.75m runabout. But it gets worse. After spending an hour or so on Lyttelton Harbour in the 2020 Fi-Glass Firestar, I thought I would check out my images when we got back to Mr Boats yard, to see what I had shot. To my horror when I went to scroll through the pics all I got was No Card Inserted, so not one image! The card was there but not pushed into the slot, so it didn’t register anything. Fortunately, Sales Manager for Mr Boats, Ian Fong and Griff kindly agreed to go back to the harbour a few days later, and we did a reshoot. Weather was better anyway, and this time the camera worked fine!

PRACTICAL & UNPRETENTIOUS Fi-Glass has a reputation for building what I would call wholesome, well-founded family trailer boats. They are exceptionally well built, with full fibreglass inner liners, stringer grids and transoms. There isn’t a hint of timber anywhere in the construction, a process that Fi-Glass pioneered back in the 1990s. The layup is very conventional, and they are built tough. The layout of the Firestar and all Fi-Glass models is practical and unpretentious. The Firestar is all about versatility with family boating in mind, where owners will use the boat for fishing, towing water toys, and generally have fun on the water. It has many features of larger models in the Fi-Glass range with a layout that makes perfect use of the space. The boat carries a 2.10m beam, and with very narrow side decks, Fi-Glass has been able to maximise the internal space. The cabin features twin bunks, (optional infill) which while not long enough for adults to sleep are perfect for kids. I found it provided enough sitting headroom for me and is the ideal place to stow all the stuff you take out for a day on the water. There are wide side trays for gear, but due to the fine bow entry and hull shape, there is no storage under the squabs. Fi-Glass have filled the shallow void and all underfloor spaces with polyurethane foam for buoyancy.

A large deck hatch provides easy access to the forepeak anchor locker should you not have an auto winch or capstan. Looking at the space available, you could easily fit a small drum winch which means you can do all your anchoring from the safety of the cockpit. The cockpit has been configured as a compromise for those that want plenty of seating and those that want as much working space as possible for fishing. Fi-Glass offers several different seating layouts to cater to that. Our boat had the standard single pedestal swivelling helm seat and a back to back passenger seat. Plus there is a full width moulded bench seat aft which offers two dedicated side seats, plus with an infill, you can add comfortable seating for a third person. You also have the option of twin back to backs or twin pedestals. Storage is available in a deep underfloor locker in the cockpit plus side trays as well as under the back to back seating. Rod holders either side come standard with optional rod racks also available. If you use the standard tote tanks, there is space for a couple under the aft deck, or you can go for the optional 80-litre stainless tank.

A large deck hatch makes access forward for anchoring easy.

The cuddy offers sitting headroom and a place to stow your gear.

The Firestar 530 presents a clean, smooth ride on Lyttelton Harbour

BOAT REVIEW

FI-GLASS FIRESTAR The boat is designed for outboards, 80-130hp, so the 90hp was a perfect match. What makes the 90CT a little different is the lower unit is the same as you would find on a Mercury 150, which has a higher gear ratio than the standard 90hp. This gives you exceptional pull from a holeshot. In other words, if you are going to tow a heavy single skier out of a deep water start, you will have no problems. Acceleration from idle to 5800 rpm is rapid. I loved the driving positions, which when seated, lets you see through the perspex screen while providing perfect wind protection and when standing, leaves enough space to stand up without digging the back of your legs into the seat base. The fact that the seat has a fore/aft slider is a plus. A boat this size doesn’t require a lot of dash space, but Fi-Glass has not skimped on offering enough for all the extras you might want. We had twin Mercury Smartcraft gauges, and while there was no MFD, there is no shortage of areas to mount one. A bracket mount would be the best option.

LOADS OF FEATURES

The cockpit lends itself to both fishing and family boating.

At a smidge over $40,000, the Firestar is an exceptional value, especially considering the standard features that it comes with. The list starts with a six-year transferable structural hull warranty, closed-cell foam core transom, foam-filled underfloor buoyancy, fully lined cabin and cockpit sides, stainless bow rail, rod holders, bilge pump and UV stabilised floor carpet and more. Just add fuel, and you are boating. There are plenty of options such as hydraulic steering, sun canopy with clears, ski pole, boarding ladder, interior cabin light, rod racks, bait board, underfloor fuel tank and drum winch or capstan. The Fi-Glass Firestar 530 Cuddy Cabin is certainly a familyfriendly boat that is a real all-rounder and looks like being around for many more years to come. It also comes with 62 years of boat building experience and excellence.

Griff Simpson is continuing the family tradition and has new models planned for the future.

S P E C I F I C AT I O N S

SMOOTH RUNNING

Lyttelton Harbour was calm, with a light breeze when we ran across from the ramp to Governors Bay. Powered by a Mercury 90 CT (Command Thrust), we recorded a top speed of 34.5 knots, with two onboard and a full tote tank. The larger CT gearcase has a 2.38:1 gear ratio, which means you can run larger diameter propellers, which in our case was an 18” Inertia. At 5000 rpm we were still cruising along at 27.5 knots and 4000 rpm, 20 knots. The Firestar hull has a deep 21 deg deadrise aft and offers a comfortable ride in choppy water. While this is what I would describe as an inshore boat, reports are that it performs better than most in rougher seas. The boat hangs on well in tight turns with no sliding and is very predictable. Possibly a little tender at rest when you have a couple of people on one side, but not excessive. 94 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

Frank Simpson THE PIONEER

W

hen Frank Simpson built his first all-fibreglass production trailer boat in 1962 under the Fi- Glass banner, he changed the way we looked at our family boating. It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen! Thousands of boats later, Fi-Glass, now under the direction of Frank Simpson’s son Griff, is still producing fibreglass boats and is still one of the leading brands in the country. Fi-Glass Products Ltd was formed in 1958 to take advantage of new fibreglass technology in the manufacture of washtubs and shower trays. However, with the expertise gained from these humble beginnings came the first Fi-Glass boat, the 3.5m Fisherman, designed by Brian Wall. It created a great deal of interest from the start, and the company grew from there. Early Fi-Glass models such as the Regent and Firecrest were sold with plywood decks, or as hulls-only for the purchaser to finish. By 1964 these hulls had developed to a complete boat with fibreglass deck. After exhibiting at the Auckland Boat Show, orders quickly came, and production was stepped up to six boats per week. When production ceased in 1968, 364 Firecrests had been built. In 1968 Fi-Glass released the Fireball, a boat that was so successful that the company rapidly expanded its manufacturing facilities to try and meet the demand. Over 2000 were built in various forms including a jet boat version. With better design and production facilities in place, a string of additional Fi-Glass models was produced, such as the Firestar, the Lightning, the Regent and the very sleek Sidewinder ski/ race boat. All early Fi-Glass cabin boats were a runabout with the cabin bolted on. In 1972 the 5.8m Viscount was introduced. The Viscount was a significant step forward for the company and took advantage of the larger outboards that were by then being produced. At 5.8m it was one of the largest production trailer boats available and certainly the most popular. Ex Timaru Fi-Glass dealer Barry Ford remembers well the Viscount. “At one point we were delivering one new Viscount a day, and we just couldn’t get enough product from the factory to satisfy the demand from our customers”. Well over 1500 of the Viscounts in various models were produced, with the last Viscount built in the late ‘90s. The 4.3m Scamp (over 1000 produced) and 7.0m Baron (350 produced) appeared in 1975 along with the next successful production model, the Dominator. Today, over 1500 Dominators have been sold in New Zealand. In 1977 the Warrior was released and this has proven to be one of the most successful cabin boats ever by Fi-Glass. Well over 1200 units have been sold. In 1977 Fi-Glass had a twelve-model line-up, from the 4.26m open Ski Angler to the 7.0m Baron Hardtop. Today, the line-up comprises nine models from the 4.75m Ski Angler and Fireball to the 6.40m Warrior, and a new flagship model is coming soon. www.fi-glass.co.nz

BOAT REVIEW

ELITE AT43

The AT43 can reach a top speed of 28 knots with its single 600hp Cummins.

Huia’s owner has opted for a Raymarine-centred navigation, control and communication system.

The décor combines American walnut, white walls and ceiling, plus Mocha-coloured leather upholstery.

W

hen I first started writing about things marine, back in the early 1980s, one of my monthly tasks was to visit Auckland’s numerous boatbuilding yards and report on the various vessels taking shape there. Unbelievable as it may now seem, it used to take me the best part of four days. A day across the bridge in the north, a day in the west, one in the east and the fourth in the south, primarily around East Tamaki. While some yards were building one-off custom boats, the majority were engaged in the manufacture of a truly staggering number of production launches and yachts. Around a decade later, they were almost all gone. A combination of the 1987 sharemarket crash, a high Kiwi dollar and the arrival of ready-to-go imports saw a once prolific industry almost completely obliterated. As we neared the end of the 21st century’s second decade, there wasn’t a single production boat over 12m being built in New Zealand.

TIME FOR A CHANGE Or was there? Just as we were about to close the door on 2019, the 13m Huia hit the waters of Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. A collaboration between Bill Upfold, arguably New

Zealand’s most prolific powerboat designer, and Allan Tongs Boatbuilders, one of the country’s longestestablished and most respected builders, Huia is an Elite AT43. It is also a genuine production sedan cruiser. At his yard on Auckland’s North Shore, Allan Tongs has been building traditional and composite boats, mainly launches, since 1983. In recent years, he has been joined in the business by son Nigel and it has been the latter that has largely driven this move into production boatbuilding. Recognising that most buyers these days prefer a production-style vessel — wanting a “brand name” boat, liking the shorter wait time and preferring to be able to actually view and walk through a boat rather than having to imagine it — Nigel and Allan started working with Bill on a possible design. They initially used their own 12m Elite as a starting point and then produced a combination of concept drawings and renders to show to prospective clients. They received a “really positive” response and, after some further refinement, had their first buyer. The tooling process started in April 2018 and Huia was launched last December.

SIMPLICITY RULES Recognising that types of people in the market for a vessel like the AT43 are increasingly younger and often without an extensive boating background, the Tongs were determined

to “keep things uncomplicated”. The AT43’s three-cabin layout, for example, caters equally for two couples and a brace of kids as it does for a mates’ fishing trip. The stove and oven are gas, reducing current drain and meaning that there is no need for a generator. The boat’s 240v needs (for the electric fridge/freezer, a seldom-used microwave and a scattering of power outlets) are easily met with increasing battery capacity (660a/hr) and a 3000w inverter. Instead of the traditional twin-screw arrangement, there is just a single Cummins QSC 600hp diesel, shaft driven through a tunnel. Any difficulty manoeuvring is taken care of by the addition of bow and stern thrusters. (Should a buyer prefer a twin-engine installation, the Tongs have an alternative twin tunnel mould ready to accommodate it.) There are numerous other examples of the Tongs’ focus on simplicity, too. Recognising that most people these days carry their music library in their pocket, they have done away with the tradition music stereo system and instead installed an attractive, slim-line Sonos voice-activated speaker above the entrance to the cockpit. Linked to Alexa and Bluetooth and/ or WiFi, it can simply be ordered to play virtually any tune in the world, give a weather update or perform a multitude of other tasks.

GREAT FLOW The design brief for the AT43 was for single level, sedanstyle suitable for family cruising and fishing with a big emphasis on entertaining, either inside or under the substantial overhang protecting the cockpit. As a result, there is great flow between the saloon and the cockpit, thanks to the cavity-sliding door (which disappears behind the fridge module) and the separating window, which drops down behind the oven. The galley is an in-line design with the gas oven and stove positioned aft and therefore easily able to service both the cockpit and those in the saloon. For’ard of this is a long Hi-Max bench top, running all the way up to the back of the helm station. Under it are numerous soft-close drawers and in a cavity behind, the pop-up TV. There is also a slide-

out pantry and a handy spice locker by the entrance to the cockpit. That electric fridge freezer unit is across on port and for’ard of that is the raised settee. Because this is a reasonably long affair, the question of how best to position a dinning table was a tricky one. Make it too long and those seated in the middle have to squirm along a considerable distance to get to their place. Make it too short and the access is easy but the number of diners able to be accommodated is significantly reduced. Bill and the Tongs creatively solved the problem by installing twin square tables near each end of the settee. When the numbers are few, they are more than adequate and access is easy. When there’s a crowd, an easily-added dropin just slots between the two to create a full length diner. The décor combines American walnut, white walls and ceiling, Mocha-coloured leather upholstery, plush pile solution-dyed nylon carpet and hard-wearing Karn Dean flooring. There is plenty of ventilation thanks to the large twin sliding hatches at the front of the saloon and the sliding windows on each side.

COVERED COCKPIT Huia’s extensive overhang ensures that a large proportion of its cockpit is safely undercover and protected from harsh sun or any rain. There is a barbecue forward to port, with the gas for it coming from a bottle in its own locker out in the portofino. There is a matching locker, for the stove/oven, over on starboard. The outdoor dinette, another square walnut table and an L-shaped bench seat, is completely under the overhang and easily serviced by the galley. There is, as one would expect, plenty of stowage and again the emphasis has been on ease of use. Under the thwart dinette seat is a “dial-able” custom-made fridge or freezer, depending on the setting chosen from the panel alongside the helm seat. Under the fore and aft seat, the Tongs have built a special bracket to accommodate the tender’s 3hp outboard, making it far more accessible than had it been placed, as is often the case, down in the lazarette. Other notable cockpit features include a wash basin with pull

ELITE AT43 out shower in the port transom and a brace of stainless steel pushpit-style upstands, complete with rod holders and a bait board. These latter have been specifically designed to allow Huia’s tender, with motor still attached, to be brought on board for short trips between anchorages. For longer trips and when on the marina, the tender, a Tru-kit inflatable catamaran, lives upright on the duckboard on a set of custom-made davits. This all leaves the large lazarette with easy access to the batteries, tankage and steering and loads of free space for anything else.

Although the Tongs do offer a twin cabin layout, the triple version is obviously more popular. A real bonus on a vessel of this size, it has been achieved by positioning the master cabin in the bow, having the guest cabin partially positioned under the saloon settee and running part of the “bunk room” under the helm and another part behind the shower. Again there has been a big focus on simplicity and ease of use. The master berth is a comfortable, high island with stowage in drawers under and in a small hanging locker. There are opening ports and a large Cule hatch fitted with Oceanair blind and mosquito netting. The guest cabin contains another queen-sized berth that can be set up either fore and aft (for taller guests) or thwart. Another opening porthole provides the ventilation and there is a dresser/drawer unit. Between the two main cabins are separate shower and toilet areas. The doors for these have been painted white to provide a more airy feel and the toilet door, when not in use can be swung across the walkway to provide privacy from the saloon. The third cabin has two bunks and provides access to the engine room.

SOPHISTICATED CONTROLS Huia’s owner has opted for a Raymarine-centred navigation, control and communication system. At its heart are twin Axiom RF12 touchscreen MFDs with a remote keypad for use in rougher weather. These are connected to a 3D sonar module, a M322 thermal camera, complete with AR200 Augmented Reality (which overlays diagrams and information onto the real-time feed from the camera), an integrated gyro-stabilised EV200 autopilot and a bow camera. There is also a Ray63 VHF with built-in GPS and AIS, an i70 multi-band wind instrument display and an STV 33 satellite TV aerial connected to the smart TV in the galley. The dash also houses the controls for the MaxPower bow and stern thrusters, a Cummins digital engine display, controls for the windlass, trim tabs, spotlight and wipers and monitors for the batteries and various tanks (fuel, water and holding).

SUMMARY Being a Bill Upfold design, the performance and seakeeping of this new model was never going to be an issue, and it isn’t. With a loaded displacement of 10.5 tonnes, it can reach a top speed of 28 knots with its single 600hp Cummins. It cruises economically at 18-22 knots and performs well in the rough. After spending some 60 hours running time on her, Huia’s owner says she has exceeded all expectations. “Bill and I went looking for a boat for me to buy,” he says. “I wanted something sophisticated, uncomplicated and easy to use — and relatively inexpensive.” Bill mentioned the AT43 project he was working on with the Tongs and Huia’s owner immediately saw the appeal. So, how does he feel 6 weeks and 60 hours after taking delivery? “It’s a great boat,” he enthuses. “It gets through the water really well, doesn’t create a huge wake the back and is exactly what I wanted: really easy to operate. “I’d definitely recommend the Elite AT43.”

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARITIMO RACING

MARITIMO ACCELERATING RACING TECHNOLOGY The latest R30 XCAT, has heralded both aesthetic and structural benefits to the next generation of Maritimos.

According to Maritimo’s Tom Barry-Cotter, the experience and knowledge gained on the international race circuit is invaluable and helps set the Maritimo product range apart from competitors around the world. 102 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

Tom Barry-Cotter and Ross Willaton celebrate their double win in Shanghai.

A

ustralian luxury motor yacht manufacturer Maritimo is unique within the boating industry being the only major luxury motor yacht builder in the world with a dedicated racing division within the company. In a highly competitive world where automotive brands are constantly fighting for glory on the race track and the ripple effect of sales success for brands that are seen to lead the industry results, Maritimo stands alone in the marine sector. “Maritimo Racing sets us apart and as one of the only manufacturers to gain the technological benefits derived from racing experience, advancing our vessels to new levels in engineering and performance” said Maritimo designer and race team representative, Tom Barry-Cotter. “Like the leading automotive brands involved in sports like Formula One, racing culture flows through Maritimo in everything we do. “We have a competitive culture fixated on finding the next edge over our competition, staunchly opposed to complacency, with the knowledge that when your product is not evolving, it leaves you exposed to being caught from behind.” Maritimo Racing division is integral within design and engineering processes within the company’s production. The experience gained through racing is valuable to staff, and infuses a competitive mindset throughout all facets of the company. Maritimo Racing has just commissioned a new apprentice program, where Maritimo’s factory

apprentices are provided with the opportunity to experience the workings and operation of the Maritimo Racing team at championship races throughout the year. “Attention to detail, where even the smallest gain remains a goal and adds to our overall competitiveness sets us apart. The mindset of continually developing small incremental evolutionary improvements over the course of time, no matter how small, is worth the effort if it is advancing you forward” says Tom. He adds that there are expectations that our product performance is elite, so every member of our brand feels that responsibility. “The best performing machine means nothing without reliability and durability, and to be successful, reliability and toughness must be methodical.”

TESTING PLATFORM

Maritimo Racing forms one of the important testing and development platforms for every Maritimo cruiser that is produced. Experience attained through the trialing of latest lamination techniques, bonding methods, and engineering components mean greater reliability and toughness in every Maritimo, as every aspect of each vessel’s construction and setup are race proven before ever reaching a production model. Tom said forces involved with power boat racing are difficult to fathom, where a light weight composite hull must endure constant impacting into waves at speeds in excess of 240kmh over season after season. WWW.P OWERBOAT MAGAZINE .C O .NZ 103

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARITIMO RACING

The X-Cat racing is super competitive and very close.

“The art of weight reduction whilst maintaining laminate strength is critical in the construction of Maritimo Racing’s hulls, like the latest R30 XCAT, which has heralded both aesthetic and structural benefits to the next generation of Maritimo’s,” he said. “Weight is so critical in the advanced design and construction of an XCAT catamaran that even the excess weight of fairing compound and paint is taken into consideration. “Various laminate schedules are tested for deflection and strength, followed by a review of the amount of fairing compound that is required to fill the laminate shrinkage to achieve a perfected smooth paint finish.” Maritimo Racing ultimately developed a laminate schedule that withstood the stresses and forces for powerboat racing, but also did not absorb unnecessary weight with excess paint, generating a superior laminate finish. Methods that increased the laminate finish quality are now being applied to the Maritmo range. In any motorsport the importance of weight distribution and balance are amplified, according to Barry-Cotter. “Weight distribution and balance is critical to any vessel in extracting performance and handling advantages, “ he said. “Balance and center of gravity are so critical for Maritimo Racing that ballast movements of 0.25% of the total boat weight are enough to affect the boat’s performance and handling characteristics. “Similarly the importance Maritimo place on balance and weight distribution of all models in the design phase is critical to ensure the brand remains the performance benchmark of the industry. Maritimo is renowned for its straight shaft technology with optimised shaft angles and neutral weight distribution. In order that varying liquid loads do not upset critical balance characteristics, all Maritimo models have water tanks and fuel tanks arranged in a ‘wing tank’ configuration, locating the varying liquid loads as close to center of buoyancy as possible. Optimised balance extracts more performance, range and fuel economy, whilst improving drivability in terms of transitioning onto plane, and turning. Drivability and handling can also be felt through responsiveness. All Maritimo models are equipped with a Maritimo Racing technology hydraulic power steering system. The system increases the responsiveness at the wheel for an enhanced driving experience. 104 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

PROPELLER SCIENCE

The championship classes that Maritimo Racing compete in, all have engine specification limitations, and constant modifications to hulls can be costly when looking to find an edge. An area where Maritimo exerts its racing knowledge and procedures to performance enhancement in both racing and throughout the model range is in the art and science of propellers. “Propeller efficiency is critical to maximizing the transfer of power from a boat’s engines to propelling a vessel along the water, whether it be at 240kmh (130 knots) or 60kmh (33 knots),” said Tom. Maritimo Racing Ross Willaton’s wealth of knowledge with nearly 50 years of racing experience has earned him the role of developing propeller specifications and testing procedures for every new Maritimo model. “Developing the right propeller for a hull is part science and part art, but experience conquers all”, says Ross. “A perfected propeller setup will generate greater efficiency with reduced cavitation and slip, whilst also generating less vibration with a more comfortable driving experience,” he said. “Maritimo Racing has a library of almost 60 propeller sets, all with slight variations in their specification, so there is almost a propeller for any setup combination. “Maritimo uses a similar strategy in the testing and development of new propellers for new models, where many combinations can be tested in order to extract maximum efficiency.” Tom Barry-Cotter said the experience and knowledge gained on the international race circuit was invaluable and helped set the Maritimo product range apart from competitors around the world.

X-CAT RACING

UIM X-Cat racing is by many likened to F1 on water and is arguably one of the most soughtafter brands of powerboat racing with each round drawing a field of nearly 30 teams. Simply put, the XCAT boats are multi-hulls made of advanced carbon technology powered by n Mercury 450hp racing outboards. They have a minimum length allowed of 9.1m and a maximum of 10.3m and a minimum weight of 2400kgs. These boats are capable of touching speeds in excess of 120mph. T

he Sundancer 320 has been described as a blurring of the lines between cruiser and sport boat design. The forward space is a massive recess that incorporates three separate lounge chairs, and it’s deep enough to hang out there will underway. What a fabulous use of space without compromising the area below decks. The 320 has triple loungers, with the obligatory drink holders, fold-down armrests and USB ports. Actuated headrests, armrests and seats allow you to adjust each individually for perfect comfort, with a stowable table conveniently in reach. An optional bow sunshade can extend over the area to offer protection from the sun while at rest. The traditional bow sun pad has evolved into a much more robust lounge seating area — certainly, a great place to relax both underway and at rest. Another interesting feature is the bow access is not through the centre of the screen as found on most bowriders, but via a deep port side recess -more of a bulwark- which links to the forward saloon. By closing the fold-back windscreen and shutting the lower door, you can eliminate any wind into the cockpit that flows from the open bow. If you want further protection, then a tonneau cover can be clipped over the entire forward space.

108 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

PARTY TIME

When it comes to the cockpit layout Sea Ray, have not gone short on providing the best possible seating configuration for the available space. This is a boat that like many of its genre is about entertaining, relaxing and having a good time in ultimate comfort. Sea Ray has set the benchmark when it comes to layout, with a seamless flow from the helm all the way through the transom and onto the integrated swim platform. I liked the reversible helm companion seat that converts to face aft, facilitating a conversation with the rest of the cockpit. Aft of the double helm seat is another single seat and a well-equipped wet bar that includes a sink and storage and offers a refrigerator and electric bbq. The helm has a digital dash with a pair of 12” Simrad MFDs and Mercury Vessel View. Everything is just where it should be, in easy reach and visible. Typical of Sea Ray, the dash is an organised cluster of switches and buttons, with everything clearly marked. Driving the 320 can be done either seated, resting on a bolster or standing, with visibility all-around virtually unimpeded. The rear section of the cockpit continues the emphasis on seating with an L shape lounger to port and across the transom. There is a drop-down table that converts the area into another big sun pad or even an accommodation overflow. Sea Ray offers two different transom options, fixed or as on our test boat a ‘sungate’. The hinged transom backrest opens to transform the entire space into another sun pad area. At the stern, a large integrated swim platform with

hidden ladder allows easy access to and from the water, plus there is an optional high/low platform. This would also be the perfect fishing space with the addition of stainless rails. Also ideal for stowing the tender. There is an electrically operated sliding canvas sunroof in the grp T-Top, and you can close off the entire cockpit space, with drop-down clears. A great plus when staying overnight. Every available space under the squabs and seating has been utilised for storage, from the transom seats to the bow squabs. If it can be used, it is!

COSY CABIN

Below decks, the Sea Ray Sundancer 320 is all open plan with no separate cabins as you may find in some competitors models. But then this is a boat that breathes entertaining and that it does better than most. The cabin is cosy and roomy with large cabin side windows letting in plenty of natural light, and despite the sunken foredeck, there is no shortage of standing height. Ideal for overnighting or longer getaways the Sundancer 320 features a cabin with sleeping accommodations for four. In the aft berth, two sliding twin beds can be combined to form a queen bed, and although it has crouching height space only, it is more than adequate. In the forward saloon / V-berth, a table converts via filler cushion to form a comfortable full-sized bed. A draw curtain is used for privacy on both cabins. RAPID TRANSPORT

The Sea Ray Sundancer 320 is available with either sterndrive or outboard power. In the case of our boat, we had the standard package, a pair of MerCruiser 300HP 6.2L MPI ECT coupled to Bravo III / DTS Sterndrives. You can option that to a pair of MerCruiser 350hp engines, or if you prefer the diesel option, then the boat is also available with a couple of 260hp Mercruiser 3.0 TDI diesels, also packaged with Bravo III / DTS sterndrives. If it’s outboards you want, then options are twin or triple Mercury 250 Verado. Axius joystick operation is available, as are Sea Ray’s Dynamic Running Surface and Mercury’s Active Trim system, which automatically keep the boat running at optimal trim and list angle. An electrically actuated engine hatch raises the entire cockpit sole for engine room access. I saw just over 35 knots on the GPS, and if you went for the 350hp package, you would see your top speed increase to just under 40 knots. There is also a bow thruster to assist in slow-speed manoeuvrability.

BREAK FROM TRADITION

The Sea Ray Sundancer 320 is a very different boat, and while it is unlike anything else I have seen locally, I am sure it isn’t going to be long before we see other brands following this unique theme. It takes a traditional cruiser and bowrider concept and pulls them together to form one efficient and useful design. The sweeping profile from bow to stern accentuates the angular, full-width windshield and bimini arch, giving the Sundancer 320 a fresh and crisp perspective. There is a fine balance of indoor and outdoor space with a boat that is as versatile as it is elegant. From the relaxed atmosphere of the bow lounge to the entertaining cockpit and open style cabin, this is a boat that breaks from tradition and does it perfectly.

TIP #026

BUNG ISSUES

TIP #025

CATCH & RELEASE

Just a reminder that if you catch any predator fish like Dogfish, sharks or Rays and you are not going to add to your fish bag, please make an effort to get them back into the water quickly. If you can remove the hook without bringing them aboard then the survival rate is higher. For the ones that have swallowed the hook quickly lay the shark on it’s back (it will stop thrashing about) and carefully remove the hook with pliers and return to the water. Above if a pic of my brother Grant catching his first hammerhead shark, we carefully removed the hook and untangled the line from around it’s neck & returned it back to the sea within 4 mins.

During the Xmas break I lost the drain bung while towing up North, no problem I grabbed a plastic replacement one from the local marine shop for $7, unfortunately the bilge started slowing filling with water as soon as I launched the boat (it had never done this before), I was able to trace the issue to the replacement plastic bung not correctly sealing. If you take a look at the photo you will see that there is a kink in the sealing face, which is a manufacturing fault when the plastic is injected & moulded. I took it back to the marine supplier and found all the bungs had the same manufacturing “Kink”. In the end I replaced it with the correct S/Steel one from the boat manufacture for $18. Tip: these bungs are ok to use in an emergency and will get you out of trouble, however always replace with the boat manufacture recommended product.

SOLAR SHOWER

TIP #025

BOAT GLOVES

If you are like me and love your fishing but don’t like the filleting afterwards, grab a box of disposable gloves and keep them handy for the next time you are gutting and cleaning fish. makes the clean-up and fileting really quick and helps to protect your hands from fish spines. Pro Tip: Grab a box of Non-Powder nitrated mechanics ones, they work the best. - keep a box on board at all times.

Santa brought me a Solar Shower for Xmas and this has been the best present ever! In the past I haven’t bothered with heated water and put up with using the cold-water deck wash hose. My wife now loves going on overnight trips, she can have a nice warm shower at the end of the day. I strongly recommend every boat owner to purchase one. Pro Tip: after using the Solar Shower a few times, add a tea spoon of baking soda and give it a good rinse, this keeps it smelling fresh. Also don’t forget to drain and dry it out after you have used over the summer.

PHIL GILBERT ANSWERS...

Pontification & Rumination… The Best Part

A

s your Xmas break evolves into a blur of sunny days and balmy nights, the crew relax in step with your own imperative, and the fish remain abundant, one of the true delights of boating becomes the daily norm. That is your post fish, post fivezies, post dinner, and post visitors introspective rumination on the day’s activities, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. This usually takes place over a stunning Red wine or an outstanding Single Malt, often alone or with a sticky visitor. The dog is at your feet. Gazing out over the crowded anchorage, you note the craft not yet showing their anchor light, you note the muppet who tried to anchor too close to you squeezed between other craft. Those owners were obviously too polite to suggest there would be minimal space to allow any nearby boats to swing at anchor with the vagaries of the wind and tide. With sage wisdom you shake your head at the vessel you saw put out 45m of rode in 5m of water, the owner of which is now jealously guarding their ½ acre patch. You consequently empathise with the vessels that had to anchor out in the tidal stream. Recalling your day’s activity, you think about how you courteously trickled past other fishers who obviously got up at dawn, so as not to upset their berley trail, or their coffee. You were delighted to discover your targeted reef for fishing is, as yet, virgin, and think how well you placed your vessel 80m upstream to allow your own berley to sweep around the point thereby enticing unsuspecting fish to their doom. Those first few 34cm keeper fish were just scouts for the big guys you planned to catch and release as the fishing came on song. Your mood sours as you remember the thunder of huge horsepower in the distance, and the crackle of the VHF as various fishos vent their displeasure at the upset being caused. Your grip tightens on your tumbler as the vision

of the ignorant twat in his Rivitimo, (or whatever it was), passing between your anchored boat and the reef at about 15kts flashes through your mind in full HD. Watching your best filleting knife slide off the bait board, and your bait bucket wash off the boarding platform in the ensuing maelstrom means you fail to make out the name. This appeared to be written in the Curlz MT font favoured by many in similar craft and is essentially unreadable at 10 paces.. To the uneducated eye most of this style of craft are indistinguishable from

each other. You recall the not so dulcet tones of the first mate as she picked up your soon to be served breakfast from the galley sole. A weeks’ worth of destress vanishes in a millisecond. This has become the enduring memory of the day. Refilling your tumbler (unnecessarily) your mind inevitably drifts to the word that is the boaties anathema… the dreaded R word. Not Riviera… (It’s not the boats fault!), but REGISTRATION. Your mental world expands as you debate the pros and cons of this topic. If the offending craft had been registered, it would have been displaying very legible letters and numbers identifying both the boat (and

114 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH / APRIL 2020

its owner). You could then report this ID to the Maritime Authority in charge of policing the road rules, and said owner could be issued with an offence notice. You then conclude there is in fact no real overarching authority in place. There is a Maritime component to the Police force, which in Auckland essentially consists of one big fast boat and numerous RIBs. The costs involved in creating a designated water police force and its associated infrastructure is scary. Tales of the mini despots in uniform on Australia’s waters come to mind. Registration would inevitably lead to licensing of operators, with the associated restrictions on age, sight impairment, health and sobriety. The insurance companies could have a field day refuting claims on technicalities. Realising your present state could theoretically have you marched off in handcuffs and processed like a criminal you mentally move on to your Editors mantra… Education, not Registration. Having a bigger faster boat drive circles around the offending muppet when you catch up with them, is a satisfying but short term fix, and would probably lead to even more disgruntled boaties within a 1nm radius. There is a lot of resistance met whilst telling a mature 30 something IT Squillionaire that they need to go back to school. Some don’t need to know that 5 kts inside 200m of an anchored or moored vessel, or the shoreline is the rule. Your mind expands further as you ponder the many difficulties in ensuring new boat owners (especially) do a Boat Masters with Coast Guard or the ilk. You have heard that one supplier offers boat driving instruction with their new craft, but you don’t know whether this encompasses the actual road rules. It all gets too hard. Shutting down for the night, you fail to register the forgotten burley bag as it drifts under the boat... Oh so close to the running gear..!!
