Award Winner DESIGN FOCUS

ceanco’s sensational 110m Lobanov-designed Jubilee recently won top honors at the 2018 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards gala that took place in Kitzbühel, Austria in late January. Jubilee won “Best Exterior Styling for Motor Yachts over 45m and above.” The judges, experts from both the 8 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

luxury and the superyacht industries, included designers, naval architects, captains, and yacht owners. Criteria for the Exterior Styling Award stipulated that the winner of design award must not only be beautiful but also be extraordinary and innovative. They felt Jubilee with its trompe l’oeil treatment of deck perimeters,

curvaceous shapes and metallic blue and white paint scheme, among other unique elements, indeed presented a magnificent profile. The judges also complimented the seamless exterior deck overheads and use of LED lighting. Launched in 2017, Jubilee is 110m x 16.4m with a maximum speed of 18.5 knots. The unique design by Igor

Lobanov features “the multi-level deck” effect, which enlarges the superyacht visually. Jubilee has a fully certified helicopter operating deck with a concealed mooring deck below. Made of steel and aluminium, Jubilee features an amazing glass elevator and a generous swimming pool on the aft main deck. Jubilee looks low for her length. The illusion has been

created with smoked glass panels between the decks that run the length of the superstructure and areas of teak decking inaccessible to guests, but which from a distance look like genuine deck spaces. Two kilometres of LED lighting in channels under deck overhangs — both fake and real — mean the deception is maintained even when the sun goes down.

KIWI MADE RETURNS W

hile I have written numerous times recently about the demise of the nontrailerable production boat industry in New Zealand, it seems all is not lost and there is some resurgence happening. We were once one of the leading countries in the superyacht construction market but that has virtually died and it is a long time since we saw a new superyacht such as the 40m-55m yachts that Alloy Yachts and Sensation Yachts used to produce. It is good to see that Yachting Developments is still hanging in there with new builds and after the 2017 launching of a 38.7m Sportfisher, they got another order for a smaller 33m Sportfisher. However, when it comes to cruisers and motor yachts in the 10m-20m range, e.g. Formula Boats, Salthouse Marine and Genesis Marine they have all gone. Salthouse Next Generation Boats moved their production to Taiwan and effectively closed the doors and turned the lights out on local production big boat manufacturing. But did they? There seems to have been a sudden shift and right now we are experiencing a change in the local boat market and I think it’s great. Kiwis have always had a love for Kiwi made and while the imports that are available, such as Riviera and Maritimo are world class and extremely popular, there are still the hardcore boaties that want something different and kiwi made. Yes, that is happening but it is only happening at the smaller end of the market, where the transition from a big trailer boat to a small cruiser is so popular. In recent years, with nothing locally being available, apart from custom builds such as the Elite Sports Sedans, it is the European and American brands such as Nimbus, Jeanneau, Beneteau and Sea Ray that have enjoyed reasonably good sales in the 10-12m range. So it was great to see two new Kiwi designed and built production boats hit the water in early April, the Admiral 10m Sports Sedan and the Superior Sedan 1050. We have the Admiral 10m as our cover story this issue and will follow with the Superior Sedan 1050 in the following issue of PPB. The Admiral has its lineage dating back to the Keith Eade designed Steadecraft 28, but apart from the running surface is nothing like the original. The Superior 1050 also goes back many years and was first released as the Vindex 33, but like the Admiral, is so far removed from the original (apart from the hull) you would have to class it as an entirely new boat. These two join the hugely successful Rayglass 3500 (11.5m) which was launched in 2017 and has gone on to become one of the most successful boats Rayglass have ever released. Orders outstripped production capabilities early on, but Rayglass is now producing a boat every five weeks. Three production grp boats in the 10-12m range you would think was great, but wait there’s more! Although still in the plug building stage, the first Elite AT43 (13m) from Alan Tongs Boatbuilders has been sold, with delivery in 2019. This boat is very much a production boat also but with some different layouts available. I would also need to mention that Tristram Boats are also underway with plans to join the 10-11m market with their biggest Tristram ever, but I don’t think we will see anything this year. While these new boats certainly fill the lower end of the big boat market, there is nothing (that I have heard of anyway) coming on stream in full production above 15m. But if there is please let me know so we can feature it in the magazine. This space is still very much the reserve of Australian, European and American boats and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Communicating and marketing your company and products in this modern world has changed immensely over my 30 years plus in publishing. I remember when I first started in community newspapers, having our designer make up the adverts, I would then drive the printed proof out to the client for approval. Then came the fax machine – (my kids probably do not know what a facsimile machine is), the ability to fax proofs certainly saved some driving and time, delivering the proof though the phone line. Now with the super-fast broadband internet, compared to the slow dial up we had when we first started Propeller in 1996, sending advert proofs from our designers to clients all over the world is fast and easy. Even with these tools there is still not enough hours in the day We now have many options to communicate with our customers. In our Jan/Feb Issue of Pacific PowerBoat we published a feature on ‘Know Your Trailer’ in conjunction with ISUZU UTES. This feature appeared in the print and digital versions of the magazine, it was also promoted extensively on our Facebook page and a series of eight Know your Trailer videos where produced. These were released weekly over the months of January and February. These videos were viewed just under 200,000 times and are still available on our website for ongoing referral. The technology we have available now, has certainly made a difference in how we market our products. We will feature another series in the July/August issue of PowerBoat – so keep an eye out for that. It will not be long now, before we start the Boat Show season – if you are passing by – please make sure to call by our stands to say hello, we will have some great show subscription specials and prizes. Happy Reading! 12 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

fter receiving Barry Thompson’s call to write this column weeks ago, as all good Kiwi blokes, I put it off till the very last minute. Somehow pressure makes us perform better, so hopefully you will find my musings interesting enough to get the end of the page. I have been building boats in the backyard since I can remember, first with my Dad as a nipper building a Sunburst, then a Trojan 750, Stratus 747, and a Marauder 8.4, all while doing an apprenticeship with Salthouse Brothers in Greenhithe. It’s fair to say I have never been afraid of hard graft so starting my first boat building business way back in the early 80’s was the natural way forward. I have seen a fair bit of change over the last 40 years. Sailing was the big boating experience of those days, so we built hundreds of yachts for customers from the drawing boards of NZ designers such as Murray Ross, Gary Mull, Greg Elliot, Alan Wright, along with many one-off designs. As time goes on, life seems to get faster and time gets tighter, so we found many people began replacing their yachts with motor boats to enable them to get to their destination quicker. As a father of two young children and running a business, we were no different, so we sold our beloved Elliot 7.4 trailer yacht and began building a powered trailer boat for ourselves. Smuggler Marine was born out of a new-found love of speed. In the early days it was fibreglass trailer boats which held a fascination for us, however it wasn’t long before we were introduced to RIBs, and the first Smuggler Strata 750 came into production in 2005. I first noticed David Richwhite’s Zodiac 750 airborne at Great Mercury Island and was fascinated by both the performance and ride. With the America’s Cup first coming to NZ in 1995 along came the large Protector RIBs, with their big engines and big tubes which opened Kiwi minds to a new boating experience. Somewhat of a novelty on the NZ stage, the RIB hadn’t really been a big part of the NZ boating experience, apart from the odd small tender with a 5hp outboard to get the crew ashore. What we found with our customers was a growing acceptance of all things RIB, and what started as an interesting project, turned into our most popular selling boat by a country mile. The versatility of a RIB is where it’s at whether for Superyachts, beach houses, tenders or trailered RIBs. If you look at Australia, England, South Africa, the Med, it’s all about RIBs, and although the NZ market has been slower to catch on, people are finally seeing the light and this is becoming a fast growing market in NZ. Change and innovation is part of the DNA of our country, and if businesses don’t adapt to changes they will fail. Pushing the boundaries and testing new waters, making new products and keeping ahead of the competition is all part of running a successful company, no matter what the industry. With the Americas Cup set to sail once again in Auckland, we look forward to seeing the boundaries pushed even further in what is going to be a fascinating and exciting event. Let’s see what happens next, bring it on.

PASSION AND LOVE FOR BOATING SINCE 1968. It started in the early seventies when Volvo Penta needed a new kind of boat to suit their newly developed engine. An innovative group of people quickly seized the opportunity to create a new kind of boat for the social lifestyle. The Nimbus 26 was born and along with it a company that would become of one of Europe´s most renowned boat manufacturers. The company´s history is a true success story, a tale of innovation, perfect timing and survival. But most of all a story about people who know about boats and their passion and love for boating. A story still being told.

New Evolution

20 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

Two New Boats

C

SB Huntsman is never a company to sit back and every so often they produce a new model that makes an impact. They did it with the Series 6000 and then the Dorado and more recently the Xcalibur. For 2018 they have come up with another winner, which they call the Evolution. The new design features a high freeboard, large open space cockpit suitable for fishing, diving and family boating and a walk-through transom. The new Evolution has a length overall of 6.40m, with a beam of 2.40m and deadrise of 21 deg. Height on trailer ios around 2.30m and will have a trailerable weight around 1600 kg. An opening windscreen with steps from the cockpit to the deck is reminiscent of the Series 6000, which proved extremely popular and reduced the need for side decks, hence maximum internal spaces. There’s a fully enclosed cabin with a lockable door, full-length squabs suitable for overnighting and a generous size deck hatch. The anchor locker is capable of taking a drum winch or deck winch, your choice. The dash has been designed to accommodate a large variety of electronics, including a 12 MFD. The driving position, like all CSB Huntsman boats, has been given particular attention with plenty of seating options. These are twin back to back seats, twin skippers or a combination of each. Plus there are rear fish bins and seat squabs. Large underfloor storage lockers look after all the wet gear with a 165-litre underfloor fuel tank providing ample fuel for long distance boating. Power options are outboard or sterndrive up to 225hp. You have the option of full carpet, gelcoat moulded floors, teak flooring or any combination. The first boat was due to be released at the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show and be powered by one of the latest generation Mercury outboards. Look for a full review on this boat in the Jul/Aug issue of PPB. www.csbhuntsman.co.nz

Elite Marine Designs Elite Marine Designs recently had two of their customs designs launched; Tasman Jewel, a 13m sedan, built by Alan Tongs Boatbuilders and Loxleigh a 15.2m passagemaker. Tasman Jewel was built for a Nelson syndicate, who went through extensive research analysing all available sedan style launches before coming to the conclusion The Elite Sedan custom build was the best option, giving them the flexibility to incorporate all of their requirements. With the single 600hp QSC Cummins Tasman Jewel cruises effortlessly @ 23kt. She features two generous double staterooms and the joinery is Oak. To date there has been 12 of these sedans custom built in veering lengths and configurations but using the same design philosophy, aesthetically pleasing, fuel efficient, practical cruisers. Loxleigh is a semi displacement hull form designed to be fuel efficient and comfortable around 10kts. Power is a single 400hp Scania that will provide Loxleigh with a top speed in excess 14kts if required. Her northland owners had several criteria in mind when initially approaching designer Bill Upfold, one of which was a comfortable roomy vessel that could stay away for extended periods of time. Other requirements where to be able to accommodate the extended family in comfort, had to be traditional in appearance but also aesthetically pleasing. Tender stowage is atop the saloon cabin and will be launched and retrieved with the boom on the vessels mast to complete the shippy appearance. Maritimo’s founder Bill Barry-Cotter and operations manager Phil Candler at the helm of the S70 with the new dash design.

The 2018 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) celebrates 30 years championing the boating lifestyle and now with only one major boat show in town, it looks like being bigger and better than ever. Running May 24 to 27, 2018 the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show attracts more than 40,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors to a spectacular showcase featuring hundreds of boats and thousands of marine products across four days. Amongst the significant marques confirmed are Maritimo, Riviera, Princess, Horizon Motor Yachts, Sunseeker, Monte Carlo, Whitehaven, Palm Beach, Grand Banks, Gulf Craft, Fairline and Longreef. SCIBS offers FREE park ‘n’ ride services from Warner Bros. Movie World, along with limited on-site parking, available pre-paid.

Maritimo Boss Falls for S70 Maritimo’s owner and founder Bill Barry-Cotter was so taken by the style and functionality of the sleek new S70 sedan cruiser his team produced for its New Zealand owners last year that he had to have one himself. Maritimo S70/02 will take pride of place at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. The first S70 came into being after New Zealander’s Brian and Cathy Carran threw Maritimo the challenge of producing a true bluewater passagemaker in a sedan version as opposed to its large flybridge motor cruisers. The finished S70 motor yacht was all its owners had wanted and much more and it caught the eye of the company’s owner. Bill Barry-Cotter was equally as impressed and decided an S70 would suit him and his family perfectly, so we set about to design number two with some significant changes specifically for him.

The vessel will be powered by a pair of Scania 1200 horsepower motors. Maritimo’s General Manager Operations, Phil Candler, said in the full beam master suite the study desk and daybed had been swapped from one side to the other and stone flooring included in the ensuite bathroom. More changes have been made in the saloon and entertaining area with a more streamlined flow on the port side and the position of the ice maker and the wine fridge shifted from the S70/01 layout. Overall the boat has refined ergonomics with elements like the dash design continuing a design evolution with cleaner flow and more stitching. The design evolution continues externally with the portholes all recessed into the hull to create cleaner lines and better protection from water flow giving it more of a mega yacht appearance.

ea Nymph Boats recently landed their first Blazer Hardtop model from China. Built to the highest CE standards, the Blazer Hardtop joins the Blazer 640 (cabin) and the Blazer TT (targa top) now available in New Zealand. While all three models are based on the same hull and cabin structures, the variations in the open, targa and hardtop designs makes this outstanding boat appealing to a wider market. Sea Nymph’s Robbie Hopper says that the Blazer has consistently been one of his most popular models and now with the addition of the full hardtop, the range is complete. The Blazer HT is available as a complete package from $NZ79990. www.seanymphboats.co.nz

MEC Yachts Well Underway with R661 Power Cat The MEC R661 is an alloy displacement powercat under construction at MEC YACHTS in Australia. The vessel was designed by Robson Design in Christchurch for a Gold Coast client which is to be cruised around the Barrier Reef. It was also a requirement that the vessel be able to undertake long range cruises around Australia and the Pacific Islands. The owner specified a displacement hull for the long range capability and

the alloy construction for durability when operating around the reefs. The R616 design has a seamless flow from the cockpit through to the saloon with a large galley area aft with dinette opposite allowing a large aft settee and a table in the cockpit as well giving al fresco or internal dining feature options. The sky lounge bridge is a real feature has a internal staircase with a large settee with table a bathroom and a sink and fridge. The other great feature

of the R616 is the owners stateroom forward which is over 6 metres wide with a separate toilet and ensuite with twin sinks on the same level. OUTBOARD FEST AT HUTCHWILCO NZ BOAT SHOW The 2018 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show is set to surprise anyone with interest in outboards. Not only will there be the usual crop of models from all the leading brands, but Kiwis will for the first time be able to view the massive, Seven Marine 627hp outboard. Brought into the country by Seven Marine New Zealand (a division of Honda Marine), the American company Seven Marine has taken a monumental leap in the horsepower stakes, with firstly the release a few years ago of a 557hp and now the staggering 627hp. According to a company spokesman, this is only a start and they say outboards up to 1000hp may not be that far away! A spokesman for Seven Marine NZ said that they have the first two 627s going on the transom of an Intrepid 350 CC for a local owner and have plans for a second one. While the engines are extremely expensive, when compared to replacing twin 350hp outboards for one single Seven Marine 672hp, they are in fact reasonably cost-effective. The first Seven Marine 672 engine can be found alongside the Honda stand which will see a full range of Honda engines, including the facelift 40/50hp and 80/100hp. Another outboard sure to attract attention will be the diesel COX, on display on the Sports Marine stand. The CXO300 is the world’s first 300hp diesel outboard and is designed for both recreational and commercial use. The CXO300 diesel outboard engine truly breaks new ground, delivering the same uncompromising power, performance, and durability you’d normally only associate with a diesel inboard engine. At the same time, it offers all the convenience and flexibility of an outboard and is similar in size and weight to petrol alternatives, as well as more efficient. Which means it is designed to be compliant with the toughest emissions standards in the world including IMO, EPA and EU emissions levels. Mercury Marine will have their new range of V-6 4S outboards that were released in February at the Miami Boat Show. The new engine family, which builds on the success of Mercury’s 75150hp 4S outboards, features 175hp, 200hp and Suzuki’s latest outboard features its proven 225hp 4S outboards and a V-6 200hp SeaPro 4.4-litre displacement block which gives commercial outboard. tremendous torque and makes it the largest The new SeaPro outboards are built on displacement V6 on the market today. With a very inconsistent custom boat building market post-GFC, Alan Tongs Boatbuilders, MD, Alan Tongs felt he needed to make a move into a more production-based programme. Having already built nine custom designs from Bill Upfold (Elite Marine Design) and identifying a gap in the market for a mid-size sports sedan he decided to make the investment. Considering almost every Kiwi production cruiser manufacturer has either closed shop or headed to Asia to have their boat’s built, it was a not insignificant or inexpensive decision. Alan points out that he has looked at building a production hull for some time although never seriously, but feels the time is now right and that there is a ready market for a fresh new Kiwi sedan boat, from a reputable designer and builder around 40-43ft. “There are still a lot of people that want a Kiwi designed and built boat and

right now there isn’t anything in the 4043ft size range available”, says Alan. At the 2017 Auckland On Water Boat Show, he unveiled plans for his Elite Marine designed Elite AT43, (13.2m) a semi-production sedan cruiser offering a variety of internal layouts. In midMarch the hull plug work started and by the first week of April this year, the first deposit was paid. “We are very excited to get one away so early and it means we can move ahead with a lot of confidence. We have plans in place for expansion when the need arises and would like to see about 3-4 boats a year coming from the factory”, says Alan. He added that he has some potential owners waiting to see the boat further advanced before committing, but feels assured of the success of the new hull. Being a semi-production boat, owners will be able to have a lot of input into the final layout, so there is still the

opportunity for a personal touch. GRP moulded, but with so many options it will feel like a custom build. The new Elite AT43 is offered in single, or twinengine configurations, shaft drive, bow/ stern thrusters, two or three cabins, galley up or down, and with great choices of interior finishes. According to Alan, the boat has a retail price considerably less than a comparable full production boat from an overseas builder. The 43-foot sports sedan offers a generous cockpit for fishing or scuba diving, as well as relaxed outdoor dining. It should appeal to the family fishermen, as well as the luxury-minded cruiser. The first boat is due for launch in about 12 months. Alan Tongs Boatbuilders Ph +64 9 4445063 allan@allantongsboatbuilders.co.nz www.alantongsboatbuilders.co.nz

Beattieful is named for the original builder and is owned by Graeme Dutch of Porirua who says it was used in the Pelorus Sound from 1961-2002, in Kaiapoi from 2002-07, and is currently homed in Picton. The 16-foot boat is powered by a 55 Hp Evinrude outboard. She is a veteran of the Nelson boat show and won the Mathieson-Jeffcott trophy for the Best Motor Powered Craft in 2010. Judge’s spokesman Ben Cox said Beattieful stood out for authenticity: “The attention to detail, the standard of the finish and touches like the deck hatch and little table in the cockpit impressed us.” Cox said the overall standard at the show was very high, representing a love of boats ‘from the backyard builder to wealthy enthusiasts with impeccable imported boats’. There were 110 entries in this year’s event and several hundred people attending the boat show over both days.

NEW ZEALAND SUPERYACHT YARDS

GONE FOR GOOD While nine years ago two of New Zealand’s largest superyacht builders, Alloy Yachts and Sensation Yachts dominated the Henderson, Auckland waterfront, today there is little left of either yard today. Neighbouring each other for many years, Alloy Yachts became one of the world’s most awarded superyacht builders, but due to the economic downturn, and lack of orders closed their doors a few years ago. The once iconic 10,000sqm Kiwi superyacht factory has been refurbished and is now being sold as industrial units. Sensation Yachts, however, were a different story, with the owners shutting shop around 2009 after experiencing financial difficulties and ongoing disputes with an existing Russian client on a three boat order. When Sensation Yachts closed, there were three partially completed superyachts and lawsuits pending. Now nine years later only one, SY32 remains. The other two partially completed hulls were scrapped along with the rest of the buildings and equipment with an empty yard now planned

NZ 03 443 9062 / 0272 292 877 Wanaka-Otago-Southern Lakes NZ

for redevelopment. As SY32 is considered to be approximately 50-60% complete the unfinished 49.5m, 280-ton displacement vessel has been made available to prospective purchasers as part of the salvage agreement on a demolition contract being undertaken by the Ward Group. For the past nine years, the partially completed hull has been inside. However the two main buildings have now been demolished and the site cleared in preparation by developers, Goodman Property Trust to build industrial units on the 2-hectare riverfront site. According to a report by DNV GL New Zealand Limited, the hull materials of SY32 remained fairly stable through the years, but further reviews have to be made if the project is to be started up again. DNV also remarked that the build quality to be good and certified in accordance with their rules and statutory regulations up to the date when they (DNV) terminated the agreement with Sensation Yachts when work ceased on the three vessels.

Tohatsu Launches New Branding Initiative Recently celebrating manufacture of 4 millionth outboard, Japanese outboard manufacturer Tohatsu has launched a campaign to connect with the next generation of boat owners. Tohatsu conducted a global survey of boaters in 2016, focusing mainly on the US and Europe, and found that though millennials were receptive to Tohatsu’s technology and their engineering philosophy - providing outboards that are lightweight, compact, easy to maintain and at a reasonable price - the survey revealed that the Tohatsu brand was not that well known among target consumers. In a bid to reinforce the brand and to engage with the next generation of consumers, Tohatsu has developed a global branding campaign incorporating a new brand logo and tagline. In the words of Tohatsu, the new logo, ‘Tohatsu Blue Wings’ is meant to evoke “the image of the seahawk that flies over the oceans across the world,” while with its associated tagline ‘Feel the Wind’: “We want people everywhere to feel the exhilarating wind coming off the wings of Tohatsu,” explained Kuniharu Maki, general manager of Tohatsu’s Marine Sales Department. Maki added: “Our target customers are people in a category we call “SMARTS”; these are boaters looking for a more refined, stimulating experience. They make up 18% of all owners of boats with engines in USA and Europe.” As part of the new branding campaign, Tohatsu launched its website at www. tohatsu.com featuring the new ‘Blue Wings’ logo. At the heart of all Tohatsu outboards is its Simple Technology, a name that embodies the Tohatsu technological philosophy which it claims, sets out to combine simplicity, interface and quality. In January the engine manufacturer reached the significant milestone of producing its 4 millionth outboard. “It is a great honour to be able to celebrate this moment of such an achievement with you. For all that, we thank every single one of you,” said by Toshihiro Kudo, president of Tohatsu Marine Corporation. Tohatsu was founded in 1922 and lays claim to being the first mass producer of outboard motors in Japan. www.tohatsu.co.nz 38 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

MINN KOTA TALON OFFERS MORE CONTROL OPTIONS Using a Minn Kota Talon for precise boat control has never been easier. In fact, there are now five ways for anglers to activate the Talon from anywhere in the boat. The newest way utilises Bluetooth communication to pair the Talon with Humminbird units on the boat for total boat control on one console (including the ability to pair Humminbird units with select Minn Kota trolling motors). Fishermen can also engage the anchor using a foot switch, with a wireless remote (every Talon comes standard with two), via the new Talon smartphone app, and with the Talon’s built-in control panel. Another significant advancement is the introduction of Minn Kota’s new 15-foot Talon, the deepest electric anchor spike ever made. It allows fishermen to lock down on more spots to efficiently unlock more water. Also new for 2018 is an intelligent work light built into the Talon top cap. When fishing in dark conditions, the work light illuminates the entire back deck of the boat to help anglers when rigging and landing fish at night. It has three brightness settings and white, or blue LED light options for ideal illumination. Talon allows anglers to anchor in any condition with three user-selectable anchoring modes - another exclusive feature. The Auto-Drive Mode powers the spike into the bottom with three increasingly aggressive hits. A Soft Bottom Mode is ideal for less aggressive anchoring and easier retraction in muddy or silted bottom. When the wind is blowing, the Rough Water Mode performs three consecutive auto-drive sequences at 10-second intervals for a secure hold when

the boat rises and falls in waves. Talon’s electro-mechanical design keeps the motor above the waterline for silent stealth below the surface. Talon also deploys vertically and out of the way, helping eliminate unwanted tangles when fighting boat-side fish. Also, anglers can add the tilt bracket accessory for easy tilt function for passing under low-hanging obstacles. In addition to the new 15-footer, Talons are also available in 8-, 10- and 12foot models. They all feature Bluetooth technology with a variety of colour combinations including red/black, blue/ black, silver/black, silver/white, all black and all white. The new Talons will be available in April 2018. RRP: Starting from AUD $3,559. Minn Kota UIltrex now available The ICAST award-winning Minn Kota Ultrex is now available in Australia and New Zealand. The Ultrex is a hybrid that merges the body of a Fortrex with the brains of i-Pilot, complete with Spot-Lock electronic GPS anchoring and more. Paired with Steering Lock, which allows you to take your foot off the pedal without losing motor heading, Ultrex will change the way you fish. The Minn Kota Ultrex product line-up will consist of numerous i-Pilot- or i-Pilot Linkand US2-enabled combos, including 24volt 80 lbs. thrust and 36-volt 112 lbs. thrust versions in 45”, 52” and 60” shaft lengths. RRP from $AUD4599. www.bla.com.au

Sierra Silverado 4000 Fuel Hose The series 337 fuel line Silverado 4000 utilises a complex construction technique involving a THV500 barrier layer, a Nitrile jacket, Polyester reinforcement and a CPE cover. The Sierra Silverado 4000 hose has a small outer diameter, is extremely flexible and easy to clamp. Silverado 4000 Outboard Fuel Line is resistant to ethanol blended fuels. This hose is EPA and CARB compliant. Silverado 4000 has a THV barrier layer to prevent permeation, polyester reinforcement for strength and weather and UV resistant CPE cover. The grey colour keeps the hose cooler and helps prevent vapour lock. This hose is for above deck primer bulb applications and is not fire retardant. RRP: From AUD $158. www.bla.com.au

Torqeedo and WhisperPower develop DC Generator To extend the range of a yacht or ship equipped with a Torqeedo Deep Blue Hybrid electric propulsion system, Torqeedo has, in close collaboration with WhisperPower, developed a 25 kW 350V DC variable speed diesel generator. Torqeedo has named the generator the Range Extender. The generator has been specially designed for recreational and commercial applications as a backup battery charger for the Torqeedo - BMW battery pack which supplies the energy for the propulsion engines (from 60 kW) and the onboard consumption. This incredibly compact and silent generator is based on the Genverter principle that WhisperPower has successfully established on the worldwide market. The fundamental principle of the

Genverter is that the speed is adjusted to the desired or required power. The advanced power electronics ensure that the generator always operates at the most efficient speed, so that fuel consumption, noise, vibration and exhaust emissions are minimised; the use is only 295g of fuel per kWh of electricity and the noise level of 54 dB (A) at a distance of 7 metres is very low. Integrated into the Deep Blue Hybrid system, the Range Extender forms part of an innovative system that offers unrivalled comfort, luxury and independence based on largely zero-emission sailing. An important option is the generation of energy for charging the BMW-i lithium batteries through renewable energy sources such as solar panels and hydro generators. The Deep Blue electric motors

and all consumers (hotel loads), including the air conditioning, are provided with silent power as far as and whenever possible. During a long trip or if the hotel load requires more power than the batteries can supply, the DC generator is automatically managed and started up by the Advanced Hybrid Control System providing the reassurance of backup power. www.torqeedo.com

SEAKEEPER 2 DELIVERS STABILITY FOR SUB-10M BOATS

SeaStar Optimus 360 For Mercury Verado

Due for Australian debut at the 2018 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, is the much-anticipated Seakeeper 2 launched at the Miami International Boat Show last month. “The Seakeeper 2 is 25% lighter and 20% smaller than the Seakeeper 3 and specifically designed for boats 27 to 32 feet,” said Glenn Frettingham, Managing Director Twin Disc Pacific. “It eliminates up to 95% of boat roll and will be popular with recreational outboard craft looking for stability, safety and a pleasant day on the water for all, no matter what the conditions. It’s effective at all boat speeds, including zero, it can operate in all sea states. Running exclusively on 12-volt power, it does not require generator power, and the compact size means that it can fit into the leaning post of a centre console boat, thus requiring no structural modifications. The Seakeeper 2 will use the new touchscreen control panel and allows users to capture real-time performance information. The Seakeeper 2 is priced at $AUD32,400 + GST. www.seakeeper.com

SeaStar Solutions has announced the availability of its Optimus 360 joystick docking and control system for Mercury Verado six-cylinder digital throttle and shift outboards. Now, owners of Verado outboards can enjoy the benefits of SeaStar Optimus 360 joystick control technology for close quarter manoeuvering, as well as Optimus EPS (Electronic Power Steering), SeaStation GPS Anchoring and SeaWays Autopilot capabilities. The Optimus 360 system will provide complete multidirectional joystick control of any vessel with twin or triple Verado outboard installations. (The quad Verado Optimus 360 joystick control will follow in the summer.) Low speed diagonal, sideways, forward and reverse movements are controlled by the simple and intuitive movement of the joystick. An exclusive “boost” mode provides added thrust to overcome strong wind or current. The Optimus 360 system also includes Optimus EPS power steering. In addition to making steering easier while underway, Optimus EPS’ speed adaptive feature allows lock-to-lock turn ratios to be programmed to match engine rpm. For example, when running

at cruising speeds the steering can be set to eight turns lock-to-lock, so minor movements of the wheel won’t translate into significant changes in course. When operating at lower speeds, the lock-to-lock ratio can be set to as low as 3.5 turns, and steering effort can be further eased to aid when manoeuvering in tight spaces. The SeaStation system was designed with anglers in mind. It offers three modes: 1) Heading Only, 2) Position Only, and 3) Heading and Position. Heading and Position mode is designed to hold the boat in a specific position; waiting for a bridge to open, for example. Position Only mode keeps the boat over a spot while allowing it to find its natural heading with wind or current. For kite or drift fishing, Heading Only mode maintains a set heading while allowing the boat to drift with the current or tide. In these modes, SeaStation uses minimal throttle and shift adjustments to maintain position. Like SeaStation, SeaWays Autopilot takes full advantage of the existing Optimus 360 systems, including the onboard pump control module, hydraulic pumps and CANtrak display. Installation of additional pumps and other hardware is not necessary. www.seastarsolutions.com WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 39

Kiwi’s Chasing US1

W

ayne Valder and Chris Hanley are men on a mission. That mission is to win the 2018 US1 title in the Superboat 750 Class and be able to proudly display it as their race number on the side of their boat for 2019. This will not be an easy task, especially considering not only the logistics of a tough 7-month racing schedule in the USA but also the fact that the 750 Class is the most hotly contested and competitive of all US offshore racing classes. For 2018 the 750 Class will enter around 9 -10 boats in each of six venues, which starts with the Lake of the Ozarks in June, through to the world championships in Key West, Florida in November. It will be a gruelling schedule for the Kiwi team, but Wayne and Chris both feel they are in with a shot at the title. The race schedule will see two short races at each event, with minimal downtime between. Points will be awarded on each race, much the same as is now done in Australia and New Zealand. Wayne points out that the venues all get huge crowds and at some races, it’s not uncommon to see more than 75,000 people lining the foreshore or on boats watching the close action. “All the boats are evenly matched and there’s only 1-2 mph difference top speed between us all, so it’s a really scary run to the first turn. It also means that the racing is close lap after lap and if you don’t have any mechanical issues it’s anyone’s race to win”, says Wayne. The big difference in the teams is just how they handle the cornering and the ‘bumper boats’ as they reach speeds more than 145mph down the straights. Wayne and Chris know only too well what can happen, after flipping on the first turn during the 2016 World Champs at Key West. Despite being run over, they both came out unscathed and the boat was later repaired to race again. Power this year will be a new pair of 750hp GM engines 42 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

being built by the same engine builder that puts the Geico engines together. “We ran Sterling engines before and as new boys on the block I felt we weren’t really getting the best service, so having an engine builder that wants to make an impact in the class should be a great advantage”, added Wayne. The team will rerun the same boat, a 42ft Skater that proudly displays the Silver fern and is finished in black and silver, all very much a Kiwi package. In 2017 they came close to winning with third overall, despite some mechanical issues, but did pick up two second places. Wayne says they learnt a lot in 2017 and felt that going into the opening race in June they are ready and well prepared. “ I still think we have the fastest boat in the class and it’s just a matter of getting everything right, including the way myself and Chris drive the boat. There is no room for error once that flag drops. “It is the most competitive offshore racing I have ever done. These guys don’t hold back, there’s no mercy, but they are great competitors and safety is paramount,” says Wayne. He adds that although they ran a number of races in 2016 and 2017 they found it hard to be accepted by the ‘racing group’, but now that the US teams see they are not just one race wonders and are serious contenders for the championship, that’s all changed and they are accepted very much as part of the class. There are also rumours that the Superboat Extreme class, which currently has virtually no horsepower limitation will change in the 2019 season to running twin engines with a 1100hp limit per engine. They will probably run at the same events as the Superboat 750 Class. And if the Kiwi team wins the US1 title, Wayne says they will probably go back and contest it. Ballzout Wins Marathon Opener Beautiful weather in Cromwell for the start of the South Island winter marathon series. Sunny sky with a south island 10 degree balmy weather and 5 knot breeze meant almost perfect day for the 20 boat field. Unfortunately Infra Red, retired before the start so the North Island contingent took many of the honours. Mark Dingleman from Wellington in Ballzout had it all to himself taking out an easy win over Dave Hanks from Hamilton in Big Bird. Craig Archer from Auckland, in Playco Playgrounds third. The spectacular ‘A’ class tunnels followed in with the newly sponsored Hirepool cat in 4th (Ryan Archer -Auckland), Tim Fellows (Wellington) with his repowered and named Evinrude coming in comfortably in 5th and Graham Pike (Auckland) in Thin Ice 6th. Daniel Rule was first South Islander in his B class rig Unruley following in 7th. Next up was the drag race up the Clutha river. Regan Williamson brought out to play his turbine boat to set a run record of 213kmh! Not to be outdone on the record front, Mark Dingleman in Ballzout got his 300hp Mercury XS to average just under 166kmh. This is thought to be the first official record set with a single outboard getting over the 100mph barrier.

MAN OVERBOARD! The recent tragic loss of Volvo Ocean Race competitor John Fisher should remind all cruisers of the dangers involved in falling overboard and here are some thoughts on dealing with these situations based on my experiences over many years both as a cruiser and Coastguard responder. Man overboard situations can range from the hilarious, when friends fall overboard in anchorages with no harm done except to their pride, to the horribly tragic where the victim doesn’t survive. In some of the latter situations it has been the skipper going over and the crew left aboard not having the knowledge to turn their vessel around and conduct a search. Even some cases of people falling overboard in marinas or at anchor have ended tragically either as a result of injury causing the victim to drown or the inability of those aboard to haul the victim out of the water . SAFETY BRIEFINGS I’m sure we’re all guilty of this at times – it’s a beautiful day and our friends arrive on board with fun foremost in mind. We tell them how to use the heads but forget that vital safety briefing about life jackets, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and man overboard drill. Maybe this won’t be too much of a problem if the skipper’s there to take charge of an emergency, but who’s going to take charge and handle a situation where the skipper is the victim? So during a safety briefing it’s essential to cover the basics of responding to a man overboard situation. This starts with prevention and no crew member should venture onto the foredeck, side decks or boarding platform while the vessel is under way without the skipper’s prior knowledge and then he/ she should be under observation and wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD). Anyone observing somebody falling in should immediately shout loudly “man overboard”, make sure they’ve been heard and continue to keep their eyes on the victim as well as pointing to him/ her because if the observer is distracted 44 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH/APRIL 2018

it may prove difficult to re-establish visual contact. Somebody must throw a life ring or some other flotation device such as a large fender into the water serving not only to potentially support the victim in the water but to mark his/her approximate position. This should be done even if the victim can’t be seen as it will mark one limit of the search area. The briefing also needs to appoint someone to take charge of the vessel should it be the skipper who goes overboard (or has an accident or medical problem) and then to make sure that person knows how to respond in terms of controlling the vessel and managing the situation. MANAGING A MAN OVERBOARD SITUATION You can divide these emergencies into two categories, that is where you can and can’t see the victim. 1. You can see the victim: The more competent people you have aboard the easier it is to manage this and provided that it’s a crew member overboard (not the skipper) and that visual contact is maintained a speedy resolution is likely. Unless it’s totally obvious the victim will be safely recovered within a very few minutes a distress call (Mayday) should be made on VHF radio’s international distress frequency channel 16, particularly if there are other circumstances like poor weather, rough conditions, cold water or the victim may need medical attention. There’s no doubt it’s always a much better decision to transmit a distress call sooner than may be needed and cancel it after a successful resolution than to wish you had made it when the situation starts to go horribly wrong. Ideally you then need a crew member to handle the radio traffic since the responding coast station and responding vessels will divert your attention from the immediate task of picking up the victim. If they are available other crew members could be directed to eyeball the victim, prepare a

flotation device with a line attached for use in recovering the victim and to don a PFD and be ready to enter the water if the victim needs assistance. It’s normally recommended to approach the victim from leeward so that the vessel isn’t driven by wind and waves over the victim. 2. You can’t see the victim This is always an extremely serious situation and you should immediately record your lat/long, activate the MOB button on your chart plotter and make a VHF radio distress call. The complexity of the ensuing search depends on whether it’s day or night time, weather conditions, general visibility, sea state and current, tidal flow, whether the victim was wearing a lifejacket or PFD with light and/or personal locator beacon (PLB), elapsed time since last sighting and whether a constant course has been kept since then. Once a coast radio station has responded to your distress call they will take responsibility for organising the search or pass this responsibility to another competent authority, for example Police, Coastguard or a Rescue Coordination Centre (in New Zealand this is RCCNZ). While waiting it would be a good idea to organise your available crew as for the first example and proceed slowly to search on a reciprocal course, for example if you were cruising to the west on a course of 270d, now proceed to the east on a course of 90d. More than likely you have a GPS plotter which will be displaying your original course line. Now follow that exact course back. Depending on your own knowledge you may decide to adjust this course for tide and current. In any case ensure you keep a record of the area searched. If the victim has a PLB remember that its lat/long is transmitted to the rescue authority (in New Zealand RCCNZ), not to you and they will direct the nearest resource to that position. Remember that victims can survive a surprisingly long time in the water so keep searching and don’t give up hope.

TASTING NOTES: HUNTERS CHARDONNAY The 2017 Chardonnay shows a bright, flinty nose of nectarine, citrus and hazelnut. The front palate is tightly structured, displaying crisp peach characters and tight, linear acid. The wine is superbly balanced with fresh fruit characters, excellent oak integration all supported with Hunter’s characteristic balanced acidity. This wine drinks very well on release but will develop and evolve over the next 5-7 years. 46 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

BOAT REVIEW

Admiral 10m It’s been eight years in the making and the final result is nothing short of outstanding. Kiwi designed and built cruisers are making a comeback and the new Admiral 10m is a boat at the forefront of that revival.

W

hen Jason Mckenzie and Steve Clement brought the Steadecraft Patrol 28 moulds off Trade Me over eight years ago, they had no detailed plans for the boat, apart from the fact they wanted to transform what was a blokes fishing boat into a more practical cruiser. They also felt that there was a gap in the market for a boat of this size that was right on the edge of being trailerable or moored. At 3m beam, you can trail the Admiral with a special permit, but it’s more likely to be moored or kept in a dry stack. While the basic hull was essentially retained, the original deck was completely remodelled and today’s Admiral looks nothing like the original. From the Steadecraft 28 Patrol there is virtually nothing left and while below the chine it’s unchanged, apart from a 250mm hull extension, there is no Steadecraft left to recognise. “We built a new higher deck with more curve, put swage lines in the topsides, moved the saloon door bulkheads back 600mm to increase the cabin living space and built a one-piece inner liner, so the boat is effectively three large moulds; hull inner liner and deck, with lots of small moulds filling all the gaps”, says Steve. The Portofino style boarding platform was also moulded as part of the deck and this increased the cockpit space considerably. Steve admits that while they had an idea of what they wanted to achieve in the end and the profile of the boat, it was very much a case of trial and error, with components made, analysed and either kept, dumped or modified. The result is a modern stylish small cruiser with soft, timeless lines that gives a feeling of being a lot bigger than it is. “It took us eight years to finish mainly because this was only a part-time project for both of us as I was concentrating on my fibreglass business and Jason his upholstery company, so there was never a dedicated time frame to finish it”, adds Steve. In mid-2107 things started to crank up and the pressure was on to get the boat finished and launched for the 2018 summer. Well they nearly made it and the boat hit the water in early April this year. There was one goal, however, and that was to make the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, which they have managed to achieve.

50 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

FIRST RUN

When I got to take the boat for a trial, it was raining and miserable in the morning and we only got to run the boat for a short time up the Tamaki River. First impression was the super slick transition onto the plane and how quick we achieved a top speed of 32 knots. Not bad for just 260hp. In the calm water, I found around 25 knots the ideal cruise speed. The 12.5 deg hull is reasonably flat and is extremely responsive to the helm. One of the reasons is the Admiral 10m is fitted with a pair of Humphree X-Series interceptors, which offer stabilisation at any speed. They are not ordinary trim tabs. The Interceptor system creates a hydrodynamic lift force by intercepting the water flow underneath the hull. In that way, the interceptor creates a lift force acting on the hull instead of on the trim-device itself, which is indifference of the regular trim tab. The X-Series features ultra-fast servo actuators that react instantly to hull movements, as demonstrated in my high-speed manoeuvers. With advanced controls, the system operates very fast and with high precision. At 25 knots I spun the wheel hard over and to my surprise, the bow dug in almost instantly and the boat hooked into a very sharp turn. The Volvo Penta DPH leg hung on tight and moments later I was on the plane and heading back down my previous track. Felt safe and the boat suffered minimal heel, although maybe I should have told my passenger before I did it!

Top to bottom: The Admiral 10m is one level from helm to the transom.

The Portofino stern was one of the additions to the original Steadecraft 28.

By using open treads on the companionway staircase and well placed Hella LED lighting, the aft cab feels quite open and spacious.

FULL PRODUCTION

With a complete moulded construction, the opportunities to customise the boat is limited, although items such as upholstery and timbers are owner’s choice. The builders have tried to present the optimum layout for what they feel most people would want in a boat this size and they have certainly achieved that. Perhaps the only significant changes available are in the cockpit, where you can have the choice of a central island with live bait tank, sink and bbq or wrap around seating and single access. As Steve says, not everyone is into fishing, so they wanted to be able to offer a more casual entertaining arrangement in the cockpit with plenty of seating. However, if you are a hard-on fishing guy, then you can replace one of the transom doors for a pair of tuna tubes. Talking fishing, the Admiral 10m has this covered, with a good size platform aft of the transom complete with a central bait station. You can add removable rails either side if you feel you want some extra security for the kids. A slide-away ladder slips in under the stern.

TWO CABIN LAYOUT

The accommodation is another area that came in for a lot of attention and by utilising the space under the saloon sole, Steve and Jason have managed to include a second cabin. The generous berth runs almost the full width of the hull and there is ample sitting headroom at the head of the bed. By using open treads on the companionway staircase and well placed Hella LED lighting, the aft cab feels quite open and spacious and not like a dark box. The forward cabin has twin single berths below, with an infill to make a significant double and a single above on the starboard side. While Admiral #1 had a storage shelf to port, you do have the option of making this another berth. Both share a dedicated head/shower compartment which has the usual features you would expect to find, plus over 2m headroom in the shower stall. WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 51

BOAT REVIEW

Clockwise: Kiwi style aft galley and open to the cockpit.

The head/shower is shared by all and has a 2m plus headroom in the shower stall.

You have the choice of a fixed or drop down table.

Now that’s what I call making the use of space.

ONE LEVEL

Admiral 10m

It’s one level from the helm to the transom, with excellent visibility through high windows and the lack of a rear bulkhead. Extra ventilation is available through sliding side windows as well as an overhead hatch. The main saloon is very Kiwi traditional layout with forwarding helm starboard and an aft galley port. In between, there’s side loungers and a dining table, plus further aft an entertainment centre. The helm is a separate moulding and Steve says this was subject to a lot of changes. The result is a large facia capable taking a 16” MFD and with plenty of space for all your other electronics and controls. The full adjustable single Hi-Tech pedestal seat, comes with seated or bolster the position. There is the option of a bench seat base with storage under. Opposite is a settee that is long enough to make another berth and the dining table that can be either fixed or drop down. Aft, the galley is more than adequate for a boat this size and comes with a three burner hob, oven, composite surface, with storage above and below. Plates, cups and glasses are stowed in a deep slide-out drawer under the forward settee. To starboard under the entertainment centre, complete with swing-out TV and Fusion sound system, is the fridge and if you require a freezer, then this can be incorporated into a settee box in the cockpit.

52 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

Alloy Bi-fold doors divide the cabin and cockpit and when everything is open it presents a seamless flow through the boat. The cabin top overhang has been adapted for storage of things you often need in the cockpit, such as a net, gaff, boat hook and cleaning gear. Another ingenious use of space. There is also storage both sides of the cockpit and in two large cockpit sole spaces. These are divided off from the engine bay but come with access panels to make working on the engine a little easier. As for the power option, at this stage, it’s a single Volvo Penta D4/260 with a DPH leg and quite honestly that’s plenty. 32 knots was an impressive speed for the boat and a little more than I thought it would achieve. The Admiral 10m is fitted with Volvo Penta’s new comprehensive battery management system – a safe and easy-to- use control system for the boat’s batteries. With the Battery Control Module (BCM) acting as a hub the boat’s entire electrical system is both more reliable and easier to monitor. The BCM contains a number of inputs, outputs and built-in electrical components that handle the power supply to the engine and accessory consumers onboard. Basically the system consists of one or more BCM-units to which batteries and power consuming devices are connected.

OBSERVATION

It is pleasing to see another all Kiwi boat coming to market and Admiral Boats have certainly produced an outstanding example. It’s a stylish performer and certainly fits into a gap in the market for a local boat of this size. With its first public showing at the Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, it will be interesting to see the reaction, but I’m picking that it may exceed expectations and the boys at Admiral Boats are going to have a busy time ahead with orders.

Buyers Guide to 6.5m + GRP Cabin Boats

In the previous issue of PPB, we ran a buyer’s guide to fibreglass open cabin trailer boats around 6m. In part two we look at the top end of the market, the big boys, both open and hardtop models, from around 6.5m to 9.0m. These include locally built Kiwi boats as well as a number of US and French imports which are available on the local market.

We have identified 17 brands and over 58 models which offers a broad cross-section of styles and designs. Some are fishing specific and others more suitable for cruising. The one thing they have in common is they are all fibreglass constructed, so unlike alloy boats, the options for layout or structural changes are not so easy. You do have plenty of options available, from seating selections to 56 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

fishing essentials and of course power packages. Of the boats listed, only 14 are available with sterndrive power only, four have the option of sterndrive or outboard and the remaining models are outboard only. Some offer twin outboard installations as well as single with power options up to 400hp (single) and 600hp (twin). Kiwi manufacturers generally favour

outboard power while the majority of imported brands go for single sterndrives. While our feature on 6m (ish) GRP boats was all about none hardtop models, when you look at the larger grp trailer boats, you have to include hardtops, as this is a very strong sector of the market. Of the 58 boats, just under half are hardtops, with the rest open or walkaround boats.

Bayliner Ciera 8

Smuggler Stealth 720 HT

FORTY YEARS PLUS Unlike the alloy boat market, hardtop grp trailer boats are not new and 40 years ago you could even buy flybridge versions. For example, there was the Bay Cruiser V7 Offshore, Cresta Craft V26 and the Sea Nymph Sovereign. However, all suffered from the same problem of being too narrow, with a 2.5m maximum beam on the waterline. They were top heavy

and not great boats to drive from up top in a rough sea. Today if anyone were to offer a flybridge trailer boat, it would probably go out to closer to 2.8-2.9m beam to provide that extra stability. We have none listed from our production builders. Hardtops were not common, but certainly available and one of the earliest was the Fi Glass Baron. Looking like the open cabin version of

the Viscount on steroids, the Baron, at 7m was amongst the biggest of the grp production trailer boats and proved extremely popular. Power was a single MerCruiser sterndrive, although later as outboards got more powerful, they were also added to the options list. The most iconic of the day was the Clipper 24m, which was the last word in luxury trailer boating. If you had WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 57

Tristram 691 Millennium - M2

the money ($19,000 basic boat in 1976) and something large enough to tow it, (Jaguars and Daimlers were popular), then the Clipper 23 was the boat to own. Big and bulky they weighed over 3200-3500 kgs on the trailer (depending on the options added) and this was the days before dry stacks. Today, the Clipper 23 is the most sought-after classic boat on the local market, with many exceptional examples still very much in use. (Look for a feature on the Clipper 24 and Clipper 26SR coming up in the next issue of PPB). Through the 80’s and 90’s, we saw a few more examples of hardtops appear from builders such as the now long gone brands Markline and Tournament, to the start of the current hardtop range from the likes of Buccaneer, Haines Hunter, Rayglass, Tristram and Smuggler. LENGTH EXPLAINED Overall lengths vary from 9.25m for the Tristram 881 Offshore TDI down to 6.40m for the Sea Nymph Blazer TT. There are two recognised measurements; LOA and LOH. LOA or length over the hull is measured from the tip of the bow in a straight line to the stern of the boat, including any rear deck extensions (platforms) and forward bowsprits. LOH or length over the hull is a measurement from the base of the transom (around where the bung is) to the bow of the hull at a point where 58 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

Campion 682 BRA SC

Chaparral 270 Signature

Beneteau Barracuda-7

Buccaneer 685 El Dorado it meets the deck and does not include the bowsprit. Plus just because a boat has a decal on the side saying 881, 650 or 700, it doesn’t always relate to the real measurement of the boat. It can certainly be confusing and so ask a dealer about the true length of the boat, so you know exactly what you are getting. There is an added length with Portofino sterns and even bowsprits, which is all useable space. There are some boats that have reasonably flush transoms but may not differ much when it comes to internal space.

Just like the 6m range of boats, the cockpit to cabin ratios remain the same at 40% cabin to 60% cockpit, but there are plenty of variations on that. If you are into your fishing, then you want a big cockpit, so there’s plenty of space for you and your mates to fish. The Rayglass 2800, for example, has a ratio of 35% to 65%, and is a dedicated fishing boat with overnight facilities. The Tristram 851 Grandeur is more about cruising with a real weekender layout inside and under the hardtop and a smaller area for fishing. The Tristram 881 Offshore TDI, while based

on the same hull moves the emphasis to fish, with dedicated features and more real estate for fishing. Then there are the walkaround models, such as the Grady White Gulfstream 232 and the Buccaneer 685 El Dorado that devote a smaller central cabin to accommodation and dry storage but with full walkaround decks to maximise fishing spaces. Some brands, such as the Bayliner Ciera 8 and the Four Winns Vista 275 are all about cruising. End of the day you need to consider what you are going to use the boat for and check out the layout that suits your needs.

VALUE FOR MONEY In most cases, bigger trailer boats come with all the essential options as standard, so apart from electronics, you don’t really need to buy much else. However, this is never the case and once you start upgrading the fish finder to a larger MFD, adding more electronics, safety gear, fishing accessories and start ticking all the boxes on the options list, the end price is going to jump. Still, nothing wrong with that and it’s better to buy all the extras when you purchase the boat, rather than add them after. I have done that and I found it a challenging task running cables, changing the dash layout and fitting extra electronics to a boat that didn’t allow enough space to do so. Another consideration when purchasing a large trailer boat is not just the cost of everything, but also what you have to tow it with and where you are going to park it. Big boats require big tow vehicles and fortunately, there are plenty of options. You not only have the 3500kg towing capacity crew cab utes, such as the Isuzu D-Max but also American trucks such as the Ford F series and Dodge Rams. With today’s dry stack option, many owners of bigger trailer boats have foregone buying a trailer (around $13000 for DMW Premier tandem braked trailer suitable for a 7-8m boat), or a bigger tow vehicle and put the money into renting a berth on a stack. A dry stack for a 7-8m boat in Auckland will set you back around $450-$500 a month. Depending what dry stack it is, boats up to 11m can be accommodated. There are also trailer parks available which in the case of Gulf Harbour Marina, Auckland are $300 a month. Obviously, you need a trailer for the boat. If you have room at home or choose to keep your boat in a marina, or at the bottom of the section in waterways such as Whitianga, Marsden Cove or Whitianga, then all the better. Overall, plenty of boats are available and it’s just a matter of finding the one that suits you best. Happy shopping!

64 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MARCH/APRIL 2018

The Marlin 300 has an LOA 9.30 m, a beam of 3.23 m and can sleep as many as six.

The Grady-White Marlin 300 is a fully-equipped bluewater fishing vessel and she can accommodate up to four people for overnight excursions. The walk-around design adds safety for fishing far offshore in sloppy conditions, while the aft cockpit has plenty of space for trolling as well as for after-hours entertaining.

he Marlin 300’s SeaV2 hull and overall design make it an offshore saltwater fishing vessel first and foremost. The 9.30m LOA and cabin below deck are a marriage of practicality and convenience. Perhaps the most important thing about the Marlin 300 is that it is a lot more comfortable -- dryer and safer -- for extended trips far offshore for bluewater fishing. Because she is not an open boat, when the sea gets rough and confused, her closed foredeck and protected bridge and cockpit make her a welcome alternative to more open boats. The addition of Strataglass between the windshield and the hardtop allows the bridge to be buttoned up for a cozy ride home when weather turns foul. In addition, the square footage in her cockpit is greater than what is found in most comparable size boats. The added advantage of the design is that she has an

66 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

enclosed head with sink and shower, a full galley, and a U-shaped seating area with a convertible table for dining which can be made into a double berth. Another berth is amidships. For this reason, the Marlin 300 can also be used for cruising and even short weekend overnighting. The Marlin 300 is the largest boat in GradyWhite’s “Walk Around” series, but frankly, we think of her more as more of an express fish boat. “Walk Around” refers to the side decks which are recessed to provide secure footing when working a fish around the boat. We think these side decks are an excellent compromise between an express and a centre console. For all of these reasons we find that she provides a lot more utility than other boats under 10m. A special feature of the Marlin 300 is the SeaV2 Hull Design. The hull was designed by C. Raymond Hunt and Associates which knows as much about designing a deep-V hull as any firm on the planet. Her high deadrise forward which warps to a moderate deep-V aft to combine stability with riding comfort. The stern of the Marlin 300 is nearly all engine with a stainless steel re-boarding ladder on the starboard side. The ladder is moulded-into the fiberglass platform, and just below it begins the 300’s rub rail, which circles the entire boat and is made of high-quality PVC with a stainless steel insert. Just forward of the re-boarding ladder is the transom door. The stout door is made of fibreglass with a heavy-duty stainless steel latch on the inside just below the cockpit bolster that extends to include the transom door. The door opens out, which we prefer so it does not restrict cockpit space and can be used in emergency dewatering.

FISHING SPACE The cockpit on the Marlin 300 is the primary fishing space, and is broken up forward by two steps up to the helm deck and access to the cabin below. A bolster wraps around the cockpit with four dedicated rod holders mounted into the reinforced gunwales. Rod racks are under both gunwales. Just below these are toe rails that can be used when hauling in the big one. On the hardtop legs, two to each side, are stainless steel rocket launchers. Along the transom is the freshwater cockpit shower. The majority of the transom panel, however, is taken up by the 300’s 274 L fishbox, which has LED lights and drains overboard. On the port end of the transom is a lift-out storage bin under a fixed cutting board. Under the bin is access to two battery banks with four batteries. There is a fold-down bench seat facing forward on the transom as well with marine-grade weather-resistant upholstery. Below the seat is an access hatch to levered seacocks and the 5 kW generator. The levered seacocks are a very good idea and something that we only rarely see. They enable the seacock to be turned off quickly in an emergency without having to fish around for a long reach to the thru-hull. More builders should use this concept when not able to put the seacock within easy reach. Forward the rod holders in the gunwales are fiberglass steps up to the side decks on each side. Adjacent to the steps up to the helm on the centreline on each side are two stations: to port is a 121 L insulated raw water live well with a light, full column distribution inlet, and overboard drain; to starboard is a rigging station with a freshwater sink, insulated bait box, and lockable drawers. For both, cushions can be easily installed just on top, creating additional cockpit seating space. Two fiberglass steps up in the centre of the boat from the cockpit to the helm. The bottom step lift up to reveal storage space below. The Marlin 300 comes standard with two Deluxe II helm seats, which are both horizontally and vertically adjustable, with armrests that can flip-up and out of the way. Both helm seats have lockable storage spaces in their bases. The boat we tested had optional Command Elite seats that are horizontally and vertically adjustable with deluxe cushioning for smoother ride. Flip up bolsters, too. We recommend this option. Grady-White also offers the option to eliminate the companion bridge seat and replace it on the port side with a lounge seat that has a backrest that faces forward

but also wraps along the portside gunwale for versatility in a social setting. The hardtop comes standard on the Marlin 300 and comes as a painted aluminium frame, with radio box, storage nets, spreader lights, four side mounted rod holders, outrigger plates, and drop, front and side curtains. The helm station has a stainless steel steering wheel with throttle just to starboard on the forward flat panel. A compass divides the dash’s flat panel. Rocker switches and the standard trim tab controls are to the right. Grady-White offers the Yamaha Helm Master as an option on the Marlin 300. One of Grady-White’s big innovations is their Captain Grady system, which works on either an iPad or iPhone or other smart devices as an app and provide operations guides, FAQs, and troubleshooting. Forward, the windshields are ventilated tempered glass, with windshield washers and two standard windshield wipers. OVERNIGHTING Access to the cabin comes via three fiberglass stairs to port of the helm station.

The decks on the 300’s lower deck are teak and holly (standard), and immediately to port upon entry is the boat’s galley. It has a microwave, glass electric top stove, refrigerator, Corian countertop, stainless steel sink, and trash drawer. Above is storage behind sliding cabinet doors. Immediately to starboard off the access stairs, through a duck-down entrance, is the aft double berth, which has netted storage on the far wall, as well as rod storage overhead. Opposite the galley on the starboard side is the 300’s enclosed head. It has a sink, shower, and lamp, with a VacuFlush marine head that has a 38 L holding tank and pump-out. Forward below deck is a dining space that can convert to a V-berth. The “C” shaped seating section wraps around a cherry wood table and has a backrest wrapping around the entire space. The table can be adjusted down to be level with the seating, allowing the addition of a filler cushion for conversion to a berth. Removal of the cushions in the seating section itself reveals storage cubbies below. A view of the aft fish box, removable storage tub on the port side for easy battery access and battery switches.

Ready for fishing, with loads of uncluttered space.

BOAT REVIEW Overhead are two reading lights, as well as three rod storage racks to each side, which flank the opening overhead latch that has both a screen and a shade depending on desired level of natural light and fresh air. WALKAROUND TO BOW The Marlin 300 is a walkaround cuddy cabin, and from an easy step-up in the cockpit you’re up onto the side-decks, with the 316 grade stainless steel guide rails extending all the way up to the foredeck. On the bow, just forward the windshield, is the opening Bowmar hatch above the lower deck V-berth. This surface can also be covered with the optional cushions and converted into a seating space. Forward the seating space is the anchor windlass, which has foot controls to port (as well as controls at the helm), and a bow pulpit that includes a roller.

To the starboard side of the windlass is the anchor locker, under a hatch with a stainless steel latch. POWER OPTIONS The Marlin 300 offers two choices for power; Yamaha Twin 300-hp or 350hp. With a pair of Yamaha V6 4.2L 300-hp engines powering our test boat, we had an estimated test weight of 4,815kg. Our top speed at wide open throttle was 43.4 knots. Best cruise came at 3500 rpm where we recorded 24.0 knots, burning 68 lph, getting 1.3 4.9 LPNM for a range of 338 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. She was fast on plane -- 3.0 seconds, hitting 20 mph in 3.9 seconds and 30 mph in 6.9 seconds. OBSERVATIONS The Grady-White

passed the test of time. The builder first introduced this series over 30 years ago and they are still in the line up -- but changed and updated over the years. That is saying something as most boat models last from three to seven years before they are discontinued. At 9.14 m this vessel is big enough, and seaworthy enough to take offshore into the blue. The GradyWhite Marlin 300 is a top-flight fishing boat, with plenty of amenities aimed at such an excursion. Grady-White Boats have just been awarded the Top National marine Manufacturers Association Customer satisfaction CSI award for the 17th Consecutive year at the Miami Boat show! A record unmatched by any other boat manufacturer in the USA ever!

TONY FLEMING TAKES US ON A JOURNEY THROUGH PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND, ARGUABLY THE BEST PLACE IN ALASKA TO SEE SPECTACULAR COASTAL SCENERY AND TIDEWATER GLACIERS CALVING INTO THE OCEAN.

W

e arrive in the relatively sheltered waters of Prince William Sound from Vancouver Island after a journey of 1600 miles, over 26 days. Few cruising boats make it here for, to reach it, any boat too large to be trailered must be placed on a barge or brave a 500 mile transit across the open and often tempestuous waters of the Gulf of Alaska. The Sound encompasses 7,000 square miles with some 3,000 miles of convoluted shoreline. Within its limits lie the three small towns Cordova, Valdez and Whittier plus two native villages of Tatitlak and Chenega. We call first at the busy

fishing port of Cordova on the edge of the huge Copper River Delta – a 700,000 acre wetland which, between late April and early May, provides a vital stopover for as many as 20 million migrating birds. Its multi-branched waterways are a breeding ground for the famed Copper River salmon. The town is dedicated to commercial fishing but many slips in the boat harbor are vacant as most fishing boats are taking advantage of one of the tightly controlled ‘openings’. Our first guest. Brian Kell from the Fleming dealership in Western Canada, joins us here having flown in from Anchorage. Apart from Captain Chris and myself, we are now five aboard with Brian, Christine and Kaylin who, as deck hand, is gaining sea time and experience in furtherance of her chosen career.

ILLIAM SOUND D E S T I NA T I O N : P R I NC E W

In The Wake of Cook Moving on from Cordova we explore the eastern side of the Sound calling first at Snug Cove - used by Captain Cook on May 16th, 1778 to careen and repair the Resolution, one of his two ships. According to his log, some of the seams had gaps as wide as 63.5mm which had to be caulked with rope! Prince William Sound has more than 150 glaciers with more active tidewater glaciers than almost anywhere else in the world. Most are retreating – some at a spectacular rate. The Columbia Glacier has retreated 12 miles between 1980 and 2011, during which time it has also lost 50% of its thickness. It is expected to continue to shrink until it reaches dry land when it will cease to be a tidewater glacier. It was ice from here that, in 1989, forced the Exxon Valdez to divert from the outbound shipping lane leaving Valdez. Along with human error, this ultimately led to her catastrophic grounding with the discharge of eleven million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters. Bligh Reef, on which she came to grief, was named after Lt William Bligh, later

72 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

of Bounty fame, who was with Cook on his visit to the Sound. We anchor for the night In nearby Heather Bay and, under a chilly rain, launch both tenders and pick our way between floating and grounded chunks of ice. While alongside a floe, a sudden bang – as loud as a signal gun – is followed by its immediate and total disintegration. Large slabs of ice tumble into the water, become submerged and then rebound with water sluicing off them only inches away from the tender. It is a stark lesson to keep our distance from these beautiful but treacherous sculptures. The following day, we continue up Columbia Bay towards the glacier at its head, we are faced with an apparently solid line of ice but, as we proceed, openings appear between the floes. We cruise among these massive ice castles, which serve as resting spots for seals and otters. The face of the glacier itself remains several miles distant when we reverse course and retrace our steps.

Valdez & Glacier Country It was the 4th of July when we pass

through Valdez Narrows between Entrance Point and Entrance Island to the town of Valdez. The harbor is crammed with commercial fishing boats. We are requested to hang around in the bay until after the announcement of the next opening when the harbormaster would have a better idea of available berths. Finally he manages to squeeze us in with Venture looking very much like a swan amongst her working cousins. Valdez had suffered a major disaster during the 1964 earthquake when the dock - and the land on which it stood - collapsed due to liquefaction. Thirty-one people lost their lives and the town was re-established at its present location on higher and more stable ground. Annual snowfall in Valdez is between 762cm and 1270cm with a record 1414cm set in the winter of 1989/90. Brian leaves us here and we are joined by Steve D’Antonio – a well-known technical consultant to the marine industry. The northwest section of the Sound is an area of multiple glaciers branching off College Fjord - so named by the elaborately equipped 1899 Harriman

expedition who spent several weeks exploring the area. They named each of the many glaciers after Ivy League colleges in the United States. Waterfalls of every size - from silvery streams to thundering cascades tumble in countless profusion down the steep slopes. We continue into Harriman Fjord and then to Surprise Inlet to visit Surprise Glacier where numerous otters are hauled out on the many floes. A tripledecked tour boat, out of Whittier, hovers at the foot of another huge multi-stream waterfall sluicing off Cataract Glacier. Here we reach our farthest north at 61 degrees 10.3 minutes. We nudge our way through fields of floating ice up College Fjord towards Harvard and Yale glaciers until it became abundantly clear that, although we could eventually reach them, progress would be unacceptably slow. Many of the ice floes carry pebbles and even sizeable chunks of rock gouged from bedrock by the action of the glaciers. Steve enthusiastically retrieves samples and spends considerable time kneeling on

the swim step rescuing rocks from a watery grave.

Trees & Meadows While glaciers and ice are the main draw, most of the Sound is verdant green with trees and apparent meadows. But looks are misleading as we discover when we venture ashore in Hobo Bay to search out the remains of a derelict mine. We find the going extremely hard over soggy muskeg that literally sucks the soles off Steve’s boots. Insects are a trial that takes much of the pleasure out of hiking. We come away with increased respect for the hardy explorers and prospectors who bush-wacked their way across this land. In places the earthquake had caused the earth to sink, allowing the sea to encroach upon the land creating ghost forests formed by bleached skeletons of trees killed and preserved by the salt. Our next destination is Blackstone Glacier at the top of Blackstone Inlet – nicknamed Deathtrap because ice calving from a hanging glacier, concealed above and beyond the vertical cliffs, can descend from

the heavens to deliver a deathdealing blow without warning. This area is exceptionally beautiful with magnificent waterfalls. A gaggle of kayakers are reduced to the size of insects by the immensity of their surroundings. We move to adjacent Beloit Glacier with another beautiful waterfall and, in peerless weather, hover impatiently for ice to calve from the craggy cliffs of ice. The lack of ice in the water – which allows us to approach the face - is an indication that the glacier is not very active.

Crew Change It is time for another change of crew – this time at the town of Whittier. Located at the head of Passage Canal, the town originated as a military dock and fuel depot in 1942. The congested harbor is filled mostly with fishing boats much smaller than we had seen in both Cordova and Valdez and there is a continual flow of such craft shuttling in and out of the narrow harbor entrance. There is no space for us at a marina berths so we tie up at a floating breakwater which requires

using the tender to go ashore. There is a fourteen year waiting list for marine berths! In a major undertaking, a rail spur linking Whittier to Anchorage was built in 1943. This required the construction of two tunnels – one of which was 2.5 miles long under Maynard Mountain. In June 2000 a road was built to share this tunnel with the train and, for the first time, it became possible to drive to Whittier from Anchorage. After some

difficulty, involving advance planning, we are able to rent a car from Avis where the rental office is in the back of a general store. After passing through the blackness of the unlit, rough-hewn tunnel we drive the sixty miles to Anchorage where we drop off Steve and collect Louisa who has flown in from Taiwan. We refuel in Whittier, taking on 1420 gallons of fuel – our first since leaving Juneau. We continue to move south

and visit Deep Bay and Mink Island before reaching Eshamy Lodge. Duke and Pamela, who run the place, show us around the cabins nestled among the trees. The lodge is accessible by boat or float plane from Whittier and has limited but comfortable accommodations. Duke goes to check his gill nets and returns with a boatload of salmon. He sells most of his catch to a pick up boat waiting in the bay but generously presents us with two fillets.

Jade Green & Beautiful We spend the next evening in Barnes Cove in Drier Bay on Knight Island. Overlooked by towering, snowcapped, peaks, this is one of the most beautiful anchorages we have visited in the Sound. We make a couple of expeditions ashore and climb a knoll overlooking the bay. Below us, in beautiful weather, Venture floats like a toy boat on translucent, jade-green, water. While underway in Knight Island Passage, we overhear a caller on the VHF reporting whales, both orcas and humpbacks, in huge numbers he has not seen for ten years. They are off Point Helen and, by great, good fortune, are already heading that way. Through binoculars, we can see tall fins and blows all across the horizon ahead 76 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

of us over a calm and glassy sea. We arrive at the spot within forty minutes and spend the next hour surrounded by these enormous animals apparently unfazed by our presence. We move slowly, sometimes shutting down the engines and switching off the ultrasonic antifouling, taking care not to go too close. It is a magical experience. We continue on to isolated Needle Rock where multitudes of Stellar seal-lions are hauled out and draped over the craggy rocks. Chenega Glacier is our last tidewater glacier. Huge numbers of Harbor Seals warily watch our progress as we thread our way through multiple floes to within Âź mile of the glacier face. Brash ice tinkles musically along the hull as we wait anxiously for the glacier to calve. We scan the full width of the heavily fissured face, alert to every crack and

boom from the immense forces locked within this moving river of ice. Minutes pass. Finally, our patience rewarded, we watch in awe as huge slabs break free and slide majestically into the water, leaving Venture rocking gently on the resulting swells. All too soon our time is up. We exit the Sound, bypassing Flemming Island, and, for the first time in four weeks, feel the surge from the open ocean as we make our way to Seward for a brief stop before heading to Montague Island. From here we make direct passage across the Gulf of Alaska to Cape Spencer - a straight shot of 392 miles lasting 42 hours. We had spent 28 days cruising Prince William Sound but, with a coastline longer than that of Oregon and California combined, we could spend a lifetime exploring this beautiful area.

BUZZI SETS NEW DIESEL SPEED RECORD FPT INDUSTRIAL IS NOW PART OF SPEED RECORD HISTORY. FABIO BUZZI, MULTIPLE WORLD POWERBOAT CHAMPION AND CEO OF FB DESIGN, HAS ACHIEVED THE FASTEST SPEED ON WATER USING A DIESEL ENGINE DEVELOPED BY FPT INDUSTRIAL, AND A HULL ENGINEERED BY FB DESIGN. THE RECORD, CERTIFIED BY GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS, WAS ACHIEVED RECENTLY ON LAKE COMO, ITALY, AS THE THREE-POINT HULL REACHED THE INCREDIBLE SPEED OF 277.5 KM/H.

F

PT Industrial and FB Design worked together to develop a new engine. FPT Industrial’s Cursor 16 litre engine used in agriculture applications, was turned into a marine engine capable of developing more than 1,700 hp. This collaboration has resulted in new marine concepts, such as the aluminium extruded exhaust manifold on the last generation electronic common rail base engine, characterised by steel pistons. New

innovative technologies for the turbocharging system have been tested to introduce multiple electronic variable geometry turbo solutions. Furthermore, the racing engine’s cooling system features a single-direct circuit, with a water intake step-change solution inside the boat’s rudder. FPT Industrial’s Research and Development Center in Arbon played an important part in this success: the engine was optimised and tested there, and modifications made to the fuel

injection system drawing on expertise gained during other racing projects, such as the “Dakar” and the “Africa Eco Race” rallies. Arbon’s history is full of technological innovations and ground breaking firsts dating back to 1928 with the development of the first diesel truck engine and the patent for the direct injection diesel engines in 1934. In 1980, Arbon collaborated on the development of the common rail injection system, whilst five years later

they designed the first small, high speed direct injection diesel engine with a turbocharger. At the end of the 90s, Arbon optimised the first application of a variable geometry turbocharger on a diesel engine, as well as the first common rail on a Light commercial vehicle, which was also adopted for agricultural applications some years later. Finally, in 2011, Arbon developed FPT Industrial’s patented HI-eSCR (High Efficiency Selective Catalytic Reduction).

FPT Industrial’s mission has always been to promote innovation in the field of racing in the pursuit of solutions and results that can be subsequently applied to mass production. The winning three-point hull was driven by Buzzi himself, who succeeded in breaking yet another record, beating his previous one set, which was also the last made in this category, in 1992, with a speed of 252 km/h.This was achieved through the efforts and passion of these two WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 79

brands, which are celebrating over 35 years of successful partnership. During this period, FB Design and FPT Industrial have won 15 world titles together, achieved more than 100 victories in both Italian and International waters and broken several records, culminating now in this latest Guiness World Record. The partnership between FPT Industrial and FB Design has led to 32 titles, including 15 world championships in different classes and 17 International trophies: seven in Europe, four in South America and six in Italy.

Diesel Speed Record History The first diesel powerboat speed record was set in 1939 by Gert Leurssen, the famous German manufacturer who reached a speed of 68 km/h. Then, in 1967, the American Don Aronow was the first to break the 100 km/h barrier and ten years later, in 1977, Tullio Abbate reached 140 km/h, a record exceeded only two years later by Fabio Buzzi with 191 km/h. The first person to pass the 200 km/h mark was the Milanese financier Carlo Bonomi in 1982 in Venice. Bonomi reached 213 km/h, and in 1985 beat his own record setting a new speed of 218 km/h. Finally, in 1992, Fabio Buzzi regained the record setting a new record speed of 252 km/h which stood until he raised it to 277.5 km/h. The three point hydro was designed and built by Fabio Buzzi. 80 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

n our recent Pacific PassageMaker Annual we reviewed the very different Horizon FD87. A new addition to Horizon’s Fast Displacement (FD) Series, the FD87 was something unique and different from the Taiwan based Horizon Yachts. While the V68 is somewhat more traditional, it does feature some very new aspects, such as the plumb bow and an optional beach club in the stern. The V68 has flawless exterior contours and contemporary styling that offers the convenience and versatility in its minisuperyacht dimensions. It also comes with an extensive list of luxurious appointments and onboard amenities. Designed as an entry-level motor yacht with superyacht attitude, the new Horizon V68 is the company’s latest model focused on satisfying a specific cruising lifestyle: owner operation. The V68 was a concept nearly nine years in the making, and ultimately was created in collaboration with world-renowned designer Jonathan Quinn Barnett (JQB) in response to one question: “What is the largest vessel two people, or perhaps a small family, could use to comfortably and safely discover the world of yachting?” With a portfolio of successful international custom superyachts ranging from 33m to 126m, JQB Ltd designs in what he calls a ‘wholistic’ manner. “The outside and inside must feel as if they are one and of the same mind”, says JQB. The Horizon/JQB team combined input from international yacht brokers and their clients’ specifications to tailor the V68 to three specific objectives: safety, solid architecture, and customisation to an owner’s lifestyle normally found with superyacht projects. Retaining Horizon’s signature quality inside and out, as well as taking advantage of the trickle-down effect from Horizon’s superyacht projects into the smaller sized yachts, the new V68 motor yacht allows an owner to take long-term cruising in under 25m. Immediately striking in appearance thanks to a plumb bow design - and only the second Horizon model apart from the FD series to feature such - the V68 has been planned throughout with large open spaces, wide side decks and a voluminous interior that takes advantage of large windows in the main deck and cabins. Excellent visibility and sizable stainless steel handrails underscore the attention given to safety.

The adoption of the plumb bow was the critical element that formed the basis of the V68’s design, notes Christian Stimson of Stimson Yachts of New Zealand who is responsible for the hull design and naval architecture. The vertical bow allowed for a longer waterline, which in turn affords a generous beam and

reduces drag at lower, displacement speeds. The V68 has a speed of 25 knots max with a cruise around 1-12 knots and a range of around 1450nm. Power is a pair of Caterpillar C18 ACERTs of 1136bhp each. The larger hull beam not only makes for greater stability and increased interior spaces but also allowed the team to increase headroom without affecting the yacht’s low profile. Horizon, Stimson and JQB also worked hard to ensure the V68’s hull features would combine seamlessly with the interior spaces to provide a superior cruising experience. The V68 is extremely fuel miserly at low speeds and produces a minimal wash, helped by the chine aft not being parallel, but tucking in for maximum efficiency. The Horizon V68 features large open spaces, wide side decks and a voluminous interior that takes advantage of the nearly 6m beam. This “solid architecture” is a testament to what JQB calls “honesty in design,” meaning that there are no visual tricks employed to make the boat appear larger than it is. Instead, the V68 boasts copious large yacht features ingeniously fitted within a manageable owner/operator framework.

Unique to an entry-level motor yacht such as the V68 is the option for customisation, and owners are given the choice of at least two major layout options for each deck. The V68 offers a three or four-cabin layout with a private and spacious master suite located midship with a walk-in closet and vanity. Optional quarters for crew are situated aft. JQB focused here on opening any narrow passages into foyers and making the stairs larger with less rise to optimise the flow throughout the vessel. The quality of the woodwork throughout the V68 is outstanding and something that the

Each V68 comes standard with C-Zone displays that are interfaced with the C Zone network and operator. They offer full control of circuits as well as the ability to view important onboard system information, such as tank levels and power levels for both AC and DC supplies. The transformation of a 30-year-old sport cruiser Doug Dukeson’s first foray into a sports cruiser involved giving a 30-year-old boat a birthday and through some new electronics, paint and a bow thruster transformed a good boat into something even better and fun to be aboard.

Impact looks better than new with fresh paint.

A

fter being a PWC, trailer boatie for the last 40 years, it was suggested by good friends of mine (and business partner in Hibiscus Marine Coatings) Greg and Kath Dawson, that it was time we looked at owning something a little larger. Greg had a 770 Southern hardtop that he has started weekending in more recently and seemed to enjoy it, so Carla and I thought right let’s look at something we could keep in the Gulf Harbour Marina Dry Stack, that we had recently been enjoying with a 7m hardtop. Looking around we saw several different boat options, but then when a caravan we had been eyeing up came up for a bargain price, we made the call to caravan this summer with some of our other family caravaners and use our PWC locally for our on-water fix. But then Greg saw this boat Impact for sale, which just needed a bit of a paint touch up, but he needed a partner in to make it work - bugger - we had just bought a caravan! 88 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

Anyway, after thinking about how many summers we have left (sad I know : ), and after a chat with our friendly bank manager, we seemed to make it work. Impact (original name of the boat) is a 13m sport cruiser designed and built in 1997 by Kevin Johnstone of Kevin Johnston Boat Builders in Devonport, Auckland. Built with traditional timber and glass construction the boat as designed as a high-speed weekend cruiser and when first launched had a top speed of 52 mph and a generous cruising speed of 42mph. Now part of the reason we thought this to be a great investment was that Impact was only in need of a paint and tidy up and maybe some more modern electronics. However, like most second-hand purchases, once you start using it, you soon find other improvements to make your on-water experience just a little more pleasant. So before long, we were ordering electronics, lighting and in our case, the necessary addition of a bow thruster for peace of mind.

ELECTRONICS UPGRADE

The existing electronics in Impact continually frustrated us, especially after having experienced much more modern electronics, on other craft we have owned. Speaking with Josh Newman, Director of Auckland based Marine Electrics NZ he said that upgrading would not be a major at all and after a visit from one of his team we had a plan of attack.

The original dash set up and the new one with the Simrad NSS12 evo3.

A Pulling the old Furuno gear out Before removing the old electronics the existing cabling for power and network needed to be checked to see if anything was compatible with the new hardware. Replacing cabling unnecessarily can be a time consuming and costly exercise. If using existing transducers or other network devices, it is important to understand if these are compatible with new displays. If replacing with the same brand then cable plugs should be compatible. Otherwise, adaptor boxes may be required or in some cases transducers or other external devices upgraded. B Building the backing plate to accommodate the new size. This is where you determine the size of the existing hole (from the removal of the existing display) and whether any modifications need to be made for the new display. This can be an involved exercise, trying to identify the backing plate material to use and ensuring a close match to the existing display, spacing and moving other instruments to provide an efficient layout. C Installing the new unit Installing of the network and power cabling as necessary has to be done before mounting and turning on the unit. Once this has been completed, the new display can be connected to the power cable and network (to detect all related devices, radar, GPS aerial, sounder module, autopilot etc.). Once installed the unit software was updated to the latest supported version The unit was then configured for the vessel, units, depth/height alarms, chart settings etc. D Wiring through to the battery and transducer This is done prior to installation of the display. The transducer and other peripheral devices are connected and powered up. The power cable is wired back to an isolation switch on the switchboard. The board will have power back to the house bank of batteries. E Making it all work - linking fuel - transducer etc. The final step is testing. This starts with the main display where you will be able to see through device management all the network devices connected. If something is missing make sure it is powered on and network cables are connected properly with resistors in the correct locations.

NEW SIMRAD NSS12 EVO3

In our situation, we would remove two (sounder and GPS) of the three units (choosing to keep the radar). Removing the two, left a similar cavity to the 12 Simrad (NSS12 Evo3) we had chosen as the upgrade, on removing the two older Furuno units, we discovered the cavity was just a little too large. The Marine Electrics team built a thin custom backing plate for the unit to sit in, that matched the curved helm style, painted up and it looks as if it was always meant to be there. The only other boat building work required was the mounting of the larger transducer (B258 Bronze Transducer) in the hull, which Steve, our boat builder had completed, carefully cut the faring, ensure the transducer housed within was level. This was measured vertically with the keel and horizontally with the boarding platform. With the transducer and the new Simrad NSS12 now in position, it was time to complete the wiring and connect into the existing fuel management system and perform a sea trial. What a difference the new Simrad has made, it was worth every dollar. LIGHTING BY HELLA

While most of the lighting had been converted to LED - we had a couple of old school halogen spotlights in the cockpit, still burning power like Tiwai Aluminium Smelter, in fact on several occasions ‘popping their overload fuse !’ Duncan Stirling, the marine lighting expert at HELLA Marine recommendation was for a couple of DuraLED 50 lamps - which I managed to install myself easily. The DuraLED 50 lamps filled the existing cavity perfectly, and most importantly of all, lit the cockpit (and the bay) with a crisp white light, which we have found great for evening fishing and entertaining. This offers a more superior light at a fraction of the power consumption (approx. 90% less power). I also love the fact these lamps are locally designed and manufactured here in NZ. The lights are $300 each and I managed to hook these up without a problem.

OUTBOARD MAINTENANCE

With the twin Suzuki outboards having 500 hours on them, they needed to be serviced. Gulflands Marine went through both engines, giving them both some fresh oil, filters and a general check-up. The twin 250HP Suzuki’s came through with flying colours and excellent compression figures, all done easily while sitting in the paint shop being prepared for painting. Thanks to the team at Gulflands Marine.

Still a great cruiser after 30 years.

We replaced an old halogen lights in the cockpit with HELLA Marine DuraLED 50 lamps.

The hole and stringers are cut to accept the bow thruster.

BOW THRUSTER FITTED

Something we thought it probably should have was a bow thruster. Being a relatively light, hardtop boat of 13m, with little bow control did have us wondering. Being outboard powered the propellers are very close and obviously offers less leverage when manoeuvring, opposed to sterndrive or shaft driven vessels with the props set a little further apart. But considering Impact is now close to 30 years old (with a refit in 1997 - including the addition of the hardtop) surely we are as good, as the previous owners over her 30 years!! Hmm… obviously not - the maiden voyage, with a bit of wind blowing through on docking had us all running about the boat. A little more than flustered, some rolling about the boat in a fetal position, with Impact almost living up to her name. Then, reassuringly, after speaking with previous owners, they agreed - a bow thruster would have been great, but they were told previously that it could not be done. After that ‘dreaded docking day’, we spoke with one of the local boat builders Steve Bull, who thought it should not be a problem… hmmm…. Nothing time and money could not fix anyway. We had seen another boat in our paint shed have a Maxpower Bow Thruster added preseason and the owner was pleased, so a quick call to Lighthouse Marine and their recommendation was to fit a Manpower CT80, which would more the do the job.

A B I RT H DAY F O R I M PACT Obviously when you are drilling holes in the hull of a boat, one needs to sure of the location - especially one of the size we needed. Steve took quite some time calculating where it should be mounted, according to Steve for a bow thruster to work most efficiently, it should be mounted the same distance below the waterline as the diameter of the tube, in our case 250mm below the surface. Steve then drilled a smaller hole to check where the larger tube would be coming through, getting a handle on the inside track it would take, and what stringers would be needed to be cut away to allow the tube to be positioned. We were assured that the structural integrity would be replaced once the tube was introduced and glass taped in place. The large external hole was carefully measured and cut with a jigsaw, using the keel to get the 90-degree position for the tube. All a little scientific and technical for me, but Steve knew what he was doing. We did not quite get the recommended 250mm under waterline position as this would have cut into some of the internal bunks. This has had no noticeable influence on the thrusters’ performance. Once the tube was in position, sitting 20mm proud on the outside of the boat, Steve proceeded to build a faring in front of the tube; this was to divert water around the tube for better performance and less drag. Back inside it was time to install and mount the engine and gearbox, sealing all areas as Steve went along to ensure water tightness. Once in place it was time to add the wiring, we chose to install a dedicated battery forward to power the unit, with a charge wire back to the house batteries. Once the control switch was mounted at the helm and all hooked up, she was operational. A quick undercoat and reapplication of antifoul and she was ready for the water. In the water, all areas were checked for water tightness, 100% leak free! The first trip out I still had vivid memories of the DD day (dreaded docking day), pulling out of the marina, giving the switch a little tweak and the bow changed direction effortlessly and instantaneously, wow what a different boat. In fact, moving across to the busy fuel jetty, I had to head around to the far side and backed in effortlessly without any bumps or worries at all.

First time up! What a transformation, this bow thruster addition has changed my whole perspective on larger boating, in fact making it easier to manage that a 7m trailer boat half the size of Impact. I strongly recommend the addition of a bow thruster to a boat of this size. It is a game changer in boating ease. BOW THRUSTER UPGRADE COSTINGS Maxpower CT80 Bow Thruster Retail price: Boat building Labour: Electrical Labour and cabling: Deep cycle battery Total

$ 8,682 The Maxpower CT80 has made a huge difference to manoeuvering around the marina.

The only other addition added, while out of the water was the purchase and fit-up (by Marine Solutions in Gulf Harbour) of a cockpit wash-down pump which came in at $ 1,455. All in all, without over capitalising, although as always - went over budget and added more than we intended. Now back in the water with new antifoul newly painted hull topsides, with fresh nonskid (Hibiscus Marine Coatings approx. $30,000) we now have a comfortable boat with all the bells and whistles for a boat of its age and value. We now look forward to many summers fishing and cruising out beautiful waterways.

I

t was when I was walking around the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show last year, that I first encountered William King, who enthusiastically showed me through a couple of his King Watercraft RIBs. I have to admit I had not heard of the brand before and was very impressed with what I saw. The finish and styling of the boats were exceptional and compared to some similar sized RIBs at the show, they stood out for me. I mentioned to William that I was keen to do a review sometime soon. Well, that sometime soon took almost nine months to happen, but I have to say it was well worth the wait. I appreciate that there are a lot of small RIB tenders on the market, so any manufacturer needs an edge if they hope to compete. One particular area that King Watercraft have done exceptionally well is the jet tender market, with a variety of hull sizes and engine packages to suit a diverse client base. “Our jet tenders are used as yacht tenders, for families towing water toys, especially in rivers and shallow estuaries, and for anyone wanting a shallow draft RIB for hunting, fishing and diving”, says William. In the previous issue of PPB, we ran a story on the King Watercraft 4.8 jet tender, which a delighted Taupo owner uses extensively for fishing and family fun. Powered by a 125hp Yamaha 4S engine through

a small jet unit, the 4.8 is a real rocket ship with a top speed of 50 knots. While the custom-built jet tenders have enjoyed steady sales in both Islands, the market is not as broad as with a conventional outboard RIB, a sector of the industry that William is keen to develop with his brand. So, when I finally got to Christchurch for my first review of one of William’s RIBs, it was appropriately an outboard powered 4.3m console tender. Like the jet tenders, he has developed the 4.3 outboard model to suit just about every facet of the Kiwi boating lifestyle. The owner of the boat I tested uses it mainly for taking 2-4 guys out diving around the Canterbury coastline. Many a cray has crawled across the Ultralon U Deck flooring! CONTINUAL DEVELOPMENT While the 4.3 is one of the oldest models in the range, it has undergone constant development over the years, with a tweak here and a tweak there to the pontoon and hull shape. The changes now are more cosmetic, as William says; “After eight years I reckon we have achieved the perfect combination as far as performance, handling and ride are concerned”. The running surface is a conventional vee hull with 18 deg deadrise at the stern, with a long keel and

reasonably aggressive bow entry. This works in well with the wide 480mm diameter pontoons. These are glued to the hull and give the 4.3 a maximum beam of just under 2m with the tubes inflated. The tubes are made by a local manufacturer, About Inflatables, using high-quality fabrics and glues. The 4mm alloy hull has an air chamber under the level floor, and as it is designed as a ‘wet’ boat for diving and water sports, there are two large drain socks at the stern. The interior layout is very customisable from complete open space with a tiller steer outboard to a variety of side, full width and centre consoles. Accordingly, the seating layout is designed to suit the console style and also what an owner requires. BALANCED RIGHT Although the waters were calm for our test, there was a couple of local ferries wakes to give the 4.3 some action. No problem! The RIB took them with ease at around 20 knots and we never received a spot of spray aboard. William tells me that the 4.3 is a very dry boat when it comes to running across moderate to choppy water and it doesn’t mind carrying some extra weight. One of William’s prerequisites when setting up each boat is making sure the weight distribution is correct. “We adjust the position of the console and seating in accordance with what a client is going to use the boat for, be it carrying the weight of 2 or 3 sets of SCUBA gear in the bow or just a couple of kids with a tube or skis”, says William. The 4.3 has also proven popular as a coach boat for rowing clubs, where the console is as far forward as practical to accommodate low planning speed and only one person aboard. Power options are 30hp-50hp, with the most popular being a 40hp 2 or 4 stroke. Maximum speed was just over 31 knots with a Yamaha 50 and on the calm waters of Lyttelton Harbour, it ran nice at around 20-22 knots. We had a fuel gauge, but no litre per hour measure so with an average of what was used in previous trips, I am picking it would be very miserly. CUSTOM LAYOUT As I already mentioned the layout is very customised and the case of our boat it was a single console with side access and a forward seat. Helm seating was provided by a 70-litre Icey-Tek removable bin seat. Storage is available in an aft wet bin locker for warps and ski ropes and inside the console for dry gear. The anchor locker is under the front squab, where there’s also a 25-litre built-in fuel tank. One advantage of having the fuel tank forward is it counterbalances the weight of the outboard on the transom. A transom mounted powder coated alloy roll bar (polished stainless steel option) is strong enough to tow water toys and comes with nav lights and eight mounts to allow for a variety of attachments such as a bait board, rod holders and even a speargun mount, all as an optional extra. Overall a cool little RIB that has the versatility to suit a wide variety of on water activities. It also comes with a heritage of New Zealand made quality in every aspect and the performance and handling you could easily attribute to a larger RIB.

SELECTING NETWORK ELECTRONICS

Tom Burden (The West Advisor) offers a few points on networking your electronics and we add a buyers guide to 12 plus MFDs that all offer the opportunity for networking in many different ways.

100 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

In this era where you can surf the web, take photos and play streamed Pandora songs on your smartphone, it’s all about being connected. Boaters want to connect their VHF radio to a GPS, monitor their fuel consumption and see radar images

on one display. If you haven’t shopped for marine electronics recently you’ll notice that things have changed a lot, and the choices can be confusing. We’re here to help, with some questions and answers to help narrow down your choices.

WWW.BOAT MA GS.C O M 101

WHAT TYPE OF BOAT DO YOU HAVE: SAILING, CRUISING, FISHING? Depending on your boating style, it often makes sense to shop by brand. For example, Navico makes electronics under three brands: Simrad is oriented toward the larger powerboat, fishing vessel or sailboat. Lowrance caters to the coastal or inland fishing vessel in the small/medium size range. B&G is their sailboat-only brand, with features and software designed just for sailors. Raymarine products are original equipment on many production sail and power boats and Garmin, began by focusing on the powerboat market. However, both of these brands offer comprehensive systems with the versatility you need, whatever your boating style. Furuno also offer a wide range of intergrated electronics suitable for smaller and larger vessels, while Humminbird have concentrated on the trailer boat market, although with units that are also more than suitable for mid range powerboats.

DO YOU WANT TO CONNECT MORE THAN ONE DISPLAY TO SHOW DATA ON YOUR NETWORK? NMEA 0183: If you have marine electronics onboard that are older than a couple of years, they are probably networked using the NMEA 0183 standard. In fact, most of the chartplotters, combos and fishfinders on this site communicate using this system. Problems and complications happen when connecting devices from different manufacturers, of different ages, and when one device in the network fails. NMEA 0183 has served us reasonably well since, well, 1983, but as devices have become more sophisticated, newer standards have increasingly replaced it. Simple devices, like a basic fishfinder, still use 0183 as a serial data interface, even if it is not a true network. NMEA 2000: All manufacturers provide comprehensive systems built to the newest networking protocol. NMEA 2000 allows plug-and-play connection of any product from any manufacturer, as long as they are all built to the certified specifications.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A FISHFINDER OR CHARTPLOTTER ONLY, OR ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY? Fishfinder: First choice for the inland, small boat angler, the fishfinder performs one function—showing a picture of what’s below your boat. Fishfinders do not include a GPS receiver, so they’re not navigation tools. Many, especially in the economy price range, do not network with other devices.

CAN Bus Networks: NMEA 2000 is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus technology, developed for automotive, robotics and industrial control applications. It uses standardized “trunk” or backbone cables, tee connectors, and branch lines called “drops” or “stubs.” A similar and compatible standard, J1939, was developed by the auto industry, and is being used in new marine diesel engines. They can communicate via NMEA 2000 with an interface adapter, as can many newer Evinrude, Mercury, Suzuki and Yamaha outboards. When connected to the network, some displays show “virtual engine gauges” onscreen.

Chartplotter: The sailor’s favorite, a chartplotter is a GPS navigator that displays high-quality marine maps onscreen, and shows your boat’s position superimposed on the chart. Available in many styles and price ranges, chartplotters do not include sonar (but you can often add this fishfinder capability by connecting a “black box” sonar and a transducer). At the high end of the price/performance range, chartplotters become multi-function displays (especially when they network using NMEA 2000 protocols). Fishfinder/GPS Combo: The most popular style, combo displays marry a chartplotter and fishfinder in one case, so they’re a good choice for smaller boats or vessels with limited dashboard space. They usually have a built-in internal GPS antenna, so might require connection of a remote GPS sensor when mounted below deck. Many combos, specifically those intended for the small-boat inland angler, come with a transommount transducer. For the rest, you can purchase a compatible thru-hull, transom-mount, in-hull or trolling motor-mount transducer separately. Multi-Function Display: Occupying the high end of the size and price range, multi-function displays are made to be the hub of a large and comprehensive onboard network. Often found on bigger boats, you can place one display at the helm and another in the nav station, flybridge or tuna tower. You’ll usually purchase a separate, remote GPS antenna, black box sounder, and often the cartography of your choice, since maps are often not preloaded. Look at the Garmin GPSMAP 8500-Series displays, the Raymarine e-Series and the Simrad NSO evo2 Displays for examples of premium MFDs. 102 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

Ethernet-based Networks: Raymarine, Navico, Garmin, Furuno and other manufacturers have created their own proprietary communication protocols and cables, connecting devices with high-speed Ethernet connectors. These systems have become the standard for sharing large amounts of data from radar imaging, electronic cartography and video cameras. Usually they’re installed alongside NMEA 2000 networks, which handle systems monitoring and control. WOULD YOU PREFER A TOUCHSCREEN OR A KEYPAD FOR DATA INPUT? Keypad: The traditional push-button user interface is less expensive and easier to operate when you’re wearing gloves. Touchscreens used in smartphones, chartplotters and multifunction displays detect tiny electrical charges from your skin, but do not work as well when they are wet, in cold weather or when gloves insulate your hand. There are two types: Single-touch touchscreen: The majority of the touchscreen devices are of this type. You can swipe the screen and move icons around or push onscreen buttons instead of mechanical buttons. Some displays, such as Raymarine’s e-Series (with their HybridTouch interface) and Simrad’s NSS evo2 (Touch Sensible Technology), use a touchscreen combined with a few buttons and a rotary controller knob. Very slick and user-friendly. Multi-touch touchscreen: This is the interface you use on your iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone. It includes “pinch to zoom” using two fingers.

WHATS YOUR INTENDED USE INLAND, COASTAL US, INTERNATIONAL, OR SOME COMBINATION OF THESE? There are two considerations to ponder when asking yourself this question: Preloaded charts: Most navigation devices, from the most basic Garmin 64 Series Handheld Wilderness Navigators to high-end chartplotter/fishfinder combos, include a choice of preloaded maps. Most allow you to add optional maps (usually stored on a small chip such as a MicroSD card). Choose the map option that best covers your boating region, and buy additional maps if you cruise or trailer to distant waterways. You can also upgrade to higher-resolution maps with more detailed charts, and amazing added features, for example, by upgrading your Navionics-compatible chartplotter to Navionics Gold or Platinum PLUS. Finally, just about all of the displays that have “no charts” come with a worldwide basemap with minimal detail. Transducers: If you’re looking for a fishfinder/chartplotter combo, consider the selection of a transducer. Anglers who fish in deeper waters and those who prowl shallow inland lakes have many choices of frequency, beamwidth and beam configuration. Check if the transducer is included with your combo. Many fishfinder/chartplotters designed for the small boat, inland market include a transom-mount transducer. Bigger network displays usually require you to choose and purchase a transducer separately.

The biggest difference between having multiple screens and one large multi-functional-display (MFD) is in relation to Multi-Tasking and Focus. Having one large MFD allows multi-tasking of being able to control your chartplotter, echosounder, radar and engine data all-in-one screen. However, many of today’s boat users mainly focus on one function at a time, which is why they would prefer having multiple screens - each to display the individual functions and their information in greater view. Having the chart plotter on one screen, the fishfinder on another and the radr on a third not only gives you peace of mind, they are also big and easy to read. You might have gotten away without multiple MFDs in the past, when your single displays handled only the sonar, chart plotter and perhaps radar. But today’s MFDs control and monitor more systems than ever. On some boats, they have replaced traditional engine gauges, autopilot control heads and conventional switch panels for accessories such as bait well pumps and lighting. The main setback to having multiple screens is limited dash space. On many boats under 10m there will most likely be this limitation, meaning most will opt for a single MFD. Larger boats may have two MFDs (ie. two 15-inch Furuno NavNet TZtouch2) or a single large display hooked up to a “black box” (ie. Furuno NavNet TZTBB) - another option is having a PC loaded with navigational software (ie. TimeZero). Then there is also the time when the single MFD you have suddenly fails and stops working and you are suddenly travelling blind. While you may have lost the fishfinder and plotter, but if everything is linked then your other nav systems will stop working, as will your systems such as engine monitoring. Systems integration and purpose is another key factor. Many modern MFD’s can integrate with other products easily - for instance, the Furuno NavNet TZtouch2 MFD integrates with radar antennas, sounder units and autopilots via NMEA2000 or ethernet to create a full navigation suite. On many professional and commercial boats, they will have individual systems for chartplotter, echsounder and radar due to specific performance requirements. Some boat users who are sportfishing enthusiasts may want a professional fish finder unit (ie. Furuno FCV-295) for finding fish and a TZtouch2 MFD for chartplotting and radar.

In 2012, Furuno set a new standard for touch screen technology when they introduced the marine industry’s first multi touch navigation system. They continue to leverage the latest hardware and software technology with their newest MFD introduction, NavNet TZtouch2. This “next step” in the NavNet series takes the feature set of the award-winning TZtouch and refines it to make these MFD units even more intuitive, while also adding new features, making this a musthave piece of electronics on any helm. TZTouch2 MFD’s have a refined Graphical User Interface (GUI) focussed on simplicity and ease of operation. You can “Edge Swipe” from all four sides to access various options. Swiping from the left of the screen reveals the NavData panel, where you can customise contents to simplify navigation and chart usage. You can set the autopilot, check tide information and much more. Swipe down from the top of the screen and display page options drop down for quick and easy access. Swipe the right side to view contextually appropriate menus, and swipe from the bottom for chart and data layer options. Rather than digging through menus, all of the important options are now just a swipe away Furuno has built-in a couple of hardware components that traditionally have been sold separately. Perhaps the most important built-in feature is their fish finder technology Every NavNet TZtouch2 display has a built-in fish finder that is dualfrequency (50/200kHz), and has a 600W/1kW power output. With TZtouch2, Furuno also introduced a new, proprietary fish finder technology, called RezBoost. RezBoost utilises Furuno’s exclusive digital signal processing protocol to produce fish targets and images that are 4-8 times sharper than a conventional fish finder, without the need to change out your narrowband transducer, or purchase an expensive broadband transducer. However, they didn’t stop there. Furuno also built-in a 56-channel GPS Receiver right into the display. You can still connect an external antenna for redundancy, but the primary GPS receiver is built-in. www.furuno.co.nz

hen trailer boating in New Zealand was in its infancy in the early 1960s, fibreglass boats were just starting to make an impact and one of the earliest brand names was Sea Nymph. Built by Auckland based Marine Plastics, they were one of the first to develop small runabouts that were something more than just a large dinghy.

One of those in the early 1960s was the Sea Nymph V13, the first of the ‘new’ breed of Sea Nymph boats. Over the years they expanded their range and by the mid-1970s they had seven models and were one of the leading marques on the market. Who can forget the Commander 18 or the V16, two models that catapulted Sea Nymph into cult status? I probably went boating over the years in every model they made, even the infamous narrow

beamed, top heavy, flybridge Sovereign V24 which tossed me and a few others into the water on Lake Taupo. In the early 1980s, the Sea Nymph brand was reinvented, when all the old models were discontinued and replaced with Australian designed Cruise Crafts. This gave Sea Nymph another considerable boost and public acceptance was exceptional. Sales boomed and Sea Nymph was undoubtedly one of the top brands to own. At the media and dealer launch of the new models, I was shown the ‘radical’ open bow (now the common bowrider) Hustler 590. Wow, how cool, but would it sell, especially with an open foredeck that could fill with water on the first Hauraki Gulf wave. Wrong. And yes it did sell and sell well and was the forerunner of all locally built bowriders that followed.

The Regal 580 has proven to be one Sea Nymph’s most popular boats.

he brand went through some problematic ownership times until in 2000, Robbie Hopper brought it and started building the boats in Hamilton. Tough times came with the GFC and for economic reasons, he moved the moulds to China. After building boats in China for the international market, but New Zealand, in 2016 he came back home and set up shop in Silverdale, Auckland. Sea Nymph was back home, 55 years after the first V13 was launched and the Sea Nymph name was etched into the pages of kiwi trailer boat building history. While the boats are still built in China, Robbie points out that the boats are all manufactured to the highest CE standard. “We have a 5-year warranty on our boats, but I am thinking of pushing that out to 10-years as I am so confident about how the boats are built, I happy to stand behind everyone we sell”, says Robbie. All the fitout and rigging, i.e. engine install and electronics is done locally and the trailers are from a local supplier.

You don’t see too many boats this size with dual transom access. With the transom doors in and rear seats there is plenty of seating available.

112 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

CUT & TUCK The development of the Regal 580 had its roots in some other Sea Nymph models, with hull #1 released in 2004. The hull is based on the now discontinued 566, the twin transom walk-through from the 640 and the cabin top from the Blazer. As Robbie says, “It’s a genuine Kiwi cut & tuck, using the best of some to make the best of one’. Compared to the previous 566, the cabin is slightly smaller, giving more emphasis on useable cockpit space. Robbie says that he has found his customers are now after cockpit room, whereas the 566 was all about being able to overnight. Certainly, the old 566 has been transformed into a better day boat with a good ratio of space. Yes, you could still stay overnight in the cabin, especially with the squab infill, but really would you want to! The 580 is very much a family boat, offering all the amenities you need when family day boat

STORAGE PLUS The cabin has loads of storage under the three squabs as well as wide side trays and there is also the option of a small toilet. A privacy screen across the cabin entry is available and Robbie pointed out that just about every boat now goes out with one fitted. Sitting headroom is adequate for most adults, with cabin windows allowing excellent visibility and a large deck hatch making access to the anchor locker easy. Not that you should need to go there if you have an auto anchoring system. The 580 can be fitted with either a deck winch or drum winch. Most Sea Nymph’s are now being installed with the Savwinch drum winch, which Robbie says is a natural fit and works exceptionally well. The 580 is available in either open style with a soft bimini and rocket launcher, the hard targa top as per our test boat with clears and coming up later this year is a full hardtop version. One of the first things I noticed about the 580 was plenty of height under the targa. Robbie and I are both around 1.8m tall and we had no problem standing to drive. I also liked the driving position which is offered either fully seated, in a bolster position or standing. The pedestal seat slides back out of the way or well forward, depending on where you want it. Visibility from the helm is unimpeded. Another cool feature is the way the clears are fitted to the hardtop via a hard plastic track system. No zips or clips to leak. Great! The hardtop is a solid two-piece moulding filled with foam and mounted on a seriously tough looking 316

stainless steel frame. No problem bolting on some outriggers if you are seriously into your fishing. Robbie says that, although he hasn’t tried it, if the boat went over on its side, the buoyancy in the hardtop would probably make it self-right. I’ll take his word for it. The overall weight of the targa option is around 350 kgs included the stainless mounting.

Still enough standing headroom under the hardtop for Robbie. Plenty of space for fishing or entertaining.

FISHING COCKPIT While the Regal 580 is being marketed as a family friendly boat, it’s sure that there’s going to be fishing done, so the cockpit reflects that. Spacious, uncluttered and room for four people to fish without getting in each other’s way. Our test boat was fitted with a Lowrance HD9, which is about the biggest size you can fit to the multi-level dash. The only instrument was Suzuki’s digital multi-function gauge. This provided comprehensive engine management and performance data with one easy-to-see screen. There is space for plenty of instruments if you prefer. Either side of the helm and passenger seats are storage spaces and while there are no aft side shelves under the coamings, there is plenty for all your gear forward. The rocket launcher and four coaming rod holders take care of your rods. A standard feature of the boat is twin removable bin seats which double as wet or dry storage and have been a feature of Sea Nymph boats for many years. I would probably make one a bait locker and the other to keep the catch. Not being permanently mounted means you cabin move WWW.BOAT MA GS.C O M 113

them around the cockpit to suit or even stack on inside the other and stow them out of the way in the cabin. Or leave them at home. Underfloor either side of a 100-litre removable wet bin and 86 litre fuel tank is all buoyancy. There is enough height under the transom for a couple of extra tote tanks or somewhere to stow a portable bbq or fishing tackle. You can even fit a live-bait tank. One of the unique aspects of the 580 is the twin transom access, something I don’t think I have seen on any other boat of this size or even bigger. Makes easy entry to the boat when swimming, towing water toys or diving. NICE RIDE The hull, which is the same design as the Blazer, but shorter, goes back further than where the engine bolts on the transom, so you get a maximum running surface. The hull features a wide flat keel plank aft and double chines, which both attribute to lifting the boat easily onto the plane and helping with stability at rest. I took the Regal 580 out for a few hours off Gulf

Harbour in reasonable moderate sea conditions with around 15 knots of breeze and a short sea. It proved a slippery boat onto the plane and didn’t require a lot of trim to get the bow up to the right attitude. Running across the chop, I found around 4300 rpm was the sweat spot and gave a comfortable ride for all three aboard. The Suzuki 115hp is the right power size for the boat, although some have been sold with 140hp. Possibly a better option if you are going to be using the boat with four adults and plenty of diving or fishing gear. More torque from the same size and weight engine package for probably about the same top end and cruise speeds. The extra power is also good for getting away from a standing start when waterskiing or towing tubes. If you are running the bimini top model (considerably light) then you could get away with running a 90hp engine. Maximum speed with the Suzuki 115 was 33.5 knots. With over 100 sold into the Kiwi market, since its inception, the Regal 580 has proven to be one Sea Nymph’s most popular boats and doesn’t look like slowing up anytime soon.

Taiwan Builders Finding Home Buyers Barry Thompson recently attended the biannual Taiwan International Boat Show and found a market switch from an almost entirely export driven boat building industry, to one that is starting to feed a growing local boating building scene. FPT’s Cursor 16 litre engine was tuned to develop more than 1,700 hp.

The show was held in the impressive Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre with the on-water berths outside at the Horizon City marina and Kha Shing Pier 22 marina. 116 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY/JUNE 2018

The 2018 Taiwan International Boat Show, a major event to showcase the best of the best from the local marine industry, was a huge success and saw a number of vessels sold, many of those to local clients. This is a total switch from the first show six years ago when local sales were minimal. A changing attitude by the government and a growing infrastructure around boating has seen growth in Taiwanese private boat ownership and although not rapid, it is steady and growing. In fact, the 2018 show saw an estimated 20% increase in local interest and with new marinas in development, local Taiwanese now have somewhere to keep their yachts. With deregulation, a losing up of rules on private ownership of boats and no luxury tax for vessels under 30.5m, Taiwanese are getting into boating, albeit slowly. Currently, there are around 12,000 private boat licences and 500 boat registrations in Taiwan. A total of 726 foreign buyers from 31 countries were in attendance over the four days of the Boat Show, including visitors from China, the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Singapore. Additionally, the event also drew many members of the public, with 20,095 total visitors. Amongst the successes were Monte Fino Yachts that took an order for a BZ 54, Johnson Yacht that sold two Johnson 70s and Dyna Craft that signed up a local client for their twin outboard powered Dyna 32. This was the third sold by the company and the second to a Taiwan buyer. Novatec Yachts also closed deals on three Euro 58s and had a lot of interest in their stylish 65 SuperNova. The company

hope to have the first of the new SuperNovas completed by the end of 2018. Horizon Yachts is Taiwan’s largest yacht builder and while they only had their E56 flybridge and E56XO Sedan at the show, a spokesman said that was intentional as this year they were there to sell rather than just displaying boats. It seemed to have paid off with sales made and plenty of follow-up business. Since first released a few years ago, 16, E56s have been sold, with one of the new E56XO Sedans heading to Australia for display at SCIBS. Boats currently in production and design stages for the USA, Asia and Australia, include two FD85 series vessels heading for Australia this year, a PC78 for the US, a PC52 for New Zealand and the first of the new style FD74s is under construction. Horizon is busy and some models have orders out to 2 years. The show was held in the impressive Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre with the on-water berths outside at the Horizon City marina and Kha Shing Pier 22 marina and according to the organisers, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) 13 contracts were signed for boat and yacht purchases. While Taiwan is well known for its 40 years’ experience in producing high-quality yachts, mainly for the US market with well-known brands such as Fleming, Johnson, Horizon and Ocean Alexander, there are now clear signs from the Taiwan International Boat Show that the domestic boating market is growing. There are new marina projects opening and planned across the country and overseas boat manufactures are focusing on the market and exhibiting at the show.

Novatec are keen to build their first Novatec 65 SuperNova.

Princess Yachts Taiwan representing Princess Yachts from the UK displayed two models, a V39 and a V48, in the on- water section of the show. Monte Carlo was also there and in recent years have sold five of their luxury motor yachts into Asia, through their dealer Simpson Marine. Johnson Yachts announced they were nearing completion of the moulds for their new Johnson 110 and displayed their Johnson 80 FB with the new high bow. Kha Shing had a Monte Fino 76, a Belize 54 Daybridge, as well as a Scott Robson designed powercat and reported strong interest in a new range of high-performance powercats from the Kiwi designer. One of Taiwan’s busiest yards, Ocean Alexander came to the show with the very latest OA85, which shortly after the show was shipped to Australia in time for SCIBS. While the US is their prime market, Australia, along with New Zealand has also been identified as growth potential. Back in the factory, only a few kilometres from the show, the company had ten boats between 24m - 33.5m in construction, with most destined for

the US market. The company were in the process of opening a fourth factory in Kaohsiung to be used for FRP production of the 85E, 90R, 100’ & 112. The 70E will still be built in the USA. Equipment manufacturers were a large part of the show with TAITRA organising 20 one-to-one procurement meetings with the total cost of deals estimated to be in excess of 10 million $USD. As a world leader in composites process technology and R&D Atech exhibited at the 2018 Taiwan International Boat Show with an impressive display that showcased the advanced technology and variety of applications possible with composite materials. One of the main highlights of the 2018 Taiwan International Boat Show last week was the Industry Summit held on Friday the 16th of March. Over 100 delegates, mainly from the local industry registered for the event which took place alongside the Boat Show.

Ultra Marine were one of the few Australian exhibitors.

There were plenty of accessories on display both from local and imported brands.

New Marinas With the growth in private boat ownership, the need for marina berths has been recognised by both government and private enterprise. One of the most significant will be the Love River Bay Pleasure Yacht Marina Project in Kaohsiung harbour. Costing an estimated $NZ23.5m to create, it will be Taiwan’s largest marina for pleasure yachts. The marina fits into a growing landscape of harbour-side city attractions, including the Maritime Cultural & Popular Music Centre (MCPMC), Pier-2 Art Centre, and the yet-to-be-completed Love River Bay Bridge. The marina project will be developed over 10 hectares of land, with piers extending to 460m in length and water depths of 6m to 8m. The marina as currently planned will accommodate around 160 pleasure craft. Completion of the Love River Bay Pleasure Yacht Marina Project is scheduled for late 2018, after which it will be connected via Kaohsiung City’s light-rail system. The Argo Yacht Club also announced a new 40 berth marina to be built at Penghu island, 60 km south of Kaohsiung City. With 150 berths, to a maximum size of 40m expected to be completed in year one and villas and a hotel by the end of year two, the new marina will be a stunning development. Other marinas are planned throughout Taiwan; they are now just going to need the boats to fill them.

Kiwi designer Scott Robson drew this 45 power cat for Kai Shing.
