BUYERS GUIDE 2022
New Models, New Colours, New Tech FOR
The 2022 PWC line up has a few surprises from all of the three leading brands, Yamaha introduces the all new JetBlaster and upgrades to its FX Series. Sea-Doo go all out with new graphics and colours plus some significant tweaks and additions to existing models. However, due Kawasaki not releasing their 2022 range until November, (after our deadline for this magazine) we cannot confirm their new models, but rumours are of a new braking and reversing system and a big revamp of the powerful Ultra series.

Yamaha
Introducing the Waveblaster Y
AMAHA MOTOR NEW ZEALAND has announced their new WaveRunner lineup for 2022 This sees the introduction of an all-new freestyle sit-down ski, exciting feature upgrades to their luxury performance FX models and new colours and decals across the entire range. Headlining the 2022 WaveRunner range is the all-new JetBlaster, designed for those riders looking for more fun, more excitement and more freestyle capabilities than a traditional sit-down watercraft. Inspired by the agility and manoeuvrability of Yamaha’s legendary SuperJet, this craft combines the freedom of a stand-up with the versatility of a sit-down personal watercraft to deliver next-level thrills and performance. Richard Shaw, National Marine 156 PA C IF IC PW C 2 0 2 2
Manager, said, “With consumer demand continuing to hit record levels and owners finding new ways to use their WaveRunners, whether adventure touring, cruising, adrenalin watersports or fishing, we are excited to be able to expand our offering to the freestyle riding market.” Key to the unique performance and innovative JetBlaster design is the electric trim, built-in footwell chocks and raised action handlebars. At the heart of this craft is Yamaha’s awardwinning, lightweight, TR-1 high-output marine engine combined with an ultra-lightweight hull, delivering the industry’s most powerful package in a watercraft of this size. UPGRADED FX SERIES Yamaha’s luxury performance FX Series WaveRunners also receive significant
technology and ride enhancements, continuing to push the limits of what you can expect from a top-end personal watercraft. New to the 2022 models, sees the former 4.3inch Connext touchscreen display increased to 5-inches on FX HO models and 7-inches on Yamaha’s supercharged FX SVHO models. The display upgrade includes: • A full colour, glass screen that is brighter and more visible. • An easy-reach touchpad screen control. • Additional top speed and acceleration modes. • Auto Trim’s introduction allows the rider to save different trim modes suiting different performance riding or comfort preferences. “With an increasing number of our FX riders choosing to install third-party

GPS devices on our multi-mount system, we have gone a step further and integrated GPS capabilities directly into our Connext displays, across the FX range,” Richard said. With the addition of an optional map software, Yamaha’s new GPS allows the rider to add and follow waypoints, create, record and save tracks, and accurately track their speed. For extra safety, Yamaha has included a geofencing feature that sets a virtual boundary for learner riders, alerting the rider when the boundary has been reached. Following the lead of the 2020 VX models, all FX models now come with Yamaha’s factory-installed, custom
integrated marine audio system, which includes twin, powerful 4.5-inch fully waterproof marine speakers, integrated two-channel (50 watts per channel) amplifier, easy access control pad and an integrated low-voltage regulator to protect the battery. The audio system is linked to the rider’s Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, allowing voice activation through a built-in microphone embedded in the ski, hands-free calls, and text messages to be displayed on the Connext touchscreen. Below the waterline, Yamaha has moved the sponsons forward 50mm and modified the ride plate angle to provide more nose lift, resulting in a

more comfortable and dryer ride in all conditions. The steering system has also been upgraded, with a sleeker and more ergonomic handlebar design, smaller control boxes, and the addition of two rope tie hooks on either side of the steering column, to make tying up to jetties and other craft easier. To round out the 2022 lineup, all the GP1800R race-ready models now come standard with Yamaha’s built-in 4.5-inch speakers and audio system. Yamaha has also updated the colours and graphic kits across their existing GP1800R, VX and affordable recreational light EX models. www.yamaha-motor.com PO W ER B O AT MAG AZ I N E. CO.NZ 157

KAWASAKI SX-R
KAWASAKI Redesigned Ultra N
OTHING DRAWS people’s attention more than “new” and Kawasaki’s watercraft division simply hasn’t had a lot of “new” to talk about. With the release of the 2022 range not until November 22, way past this magazines deadline, a lot of what Kawasaki has coming for 2022 is only speculation. The influential The Watercraft Journal, says that Kawasaki’s line up in 2022 is likely to include an all new braking and reversing system. Plus, a complete redesign. They say that new Ultra is rumoured to share both the folding rear seat with the Recreation segment craft as well as the watertight phone case found in the glove box. Equally, the Ultra platform will retain its classleading hull including its 22.5-degree deadrise true deep V-hull. It’s also expected that the naturally-aspired Ultra LX will also finally receive the electronic engine management and throttle control system, providing the craft Cruise Control, Eco Mode and electronic trim. Returning as well is the massive 20.6-gallon fuel cell, industry-leading 56-gallon storage capacity and massive horsepower output of 310-ponies from an Eaton TVS roots-style supercharger pressing an incredible 16.8psi down the throat of its 1,498cc 4-stroke powerplant. This information has not been confirmed by anyone at Kawasaki and likely won’t be until the 2022 models are ready to be revealed later this year. “The second release will, feature an array of all-new models that will see Kawasaki Jet Skis at the forefront of PWC technology and retain the reliable reputation synonymous with the JetSki brand”, says Alarn Young, Marketing Co-Ordinator for Kawasaki New Zealand.

Sea Doo Mostly Colour Changes S
EA DOO continue to lead the industry in the dedicated fishing PWC, with their expanding Fish Pro model range. While the GTI-based Fish Pro Scout employs a Rotax 1630cc producing 130-horsepower, the larger ST3based Fish Pro Sport 170 and Trophy 170 also include a few more features, namely angled gunwale footrests; front rod holders and cup holders; and an extended rear platform providing another 30cm of length and a second set of LinQ attachment points. The Trophy 170 comes with all FishPro Sport 170 features, as well as a quick-connect live well and integrated washdown, a new advanced battery system, and the 20cm full-colour LCD display (optional). Sea-Doo’s 2022 lineup introduces several new and exciting products plus some significant tweaks and additions to existing models. Ranging from the mundane to the magnificent, these improvements were worked into the 2022 batch to better refine and polish the product line. The Sea-Doo Spark now gets a colour injection into sections of the Polytec exoskeleton that have not yet been previously coloured. For 2022, the GTI family of Recreation segment watercraft has the addition of the optional iDF (Intelligent Debris Free) system. In fact, the iDF technology, which reverses the pump’s thrust in a 12-second burst in order to clear clogged intakes, is still only available on select models. GTI SE can have the sound system added as an accessory (not a factory option) but theinfotainment dash cannot be retrofitted. The infotainment dashboard has been highly sought after as a retro-fit for other units. But it’s the new GTX Limited 300 that goes all the way with standard features like iDF, the 7.8-inch full colour LCD app-ready display, the organiser bins for its 96 L central cargo compartment, and its Metallic Sage and Liquid Titanium colouring. Now there’s three levels of PWC fishing supremacy available to the enthusiast: the 2022 Fish Pro Scout 130 in white and Gulfstream blue; the Fish Pro Sport 170 also in white and Gulfstream blue; and the top-of-theline Fish Pro Trophy 170 in Shark grey and orange rrush. Each of these comes standard with the iDF Intelligent Debris Free pump system, a 51 litre cooler, a specially-designed Fishing Bench Seat, a unique “trolling mode” set into the Intelligent Throttle Control software allowing each units to toggle through trolling speeds up to 7 knots and a multifunctional Garmin ECHOMAP MFD with accurate marine navigation, bright and clear display, mid-CHIRP technology, and more. All of that is to say that Sea-Doo was not planning on resting on its laurels any time soon. 160 PA C IF IC PW C 2 0 2 2

Tiagra are currently offering three electric models, based on a functional prototype they have had running since 2018.
In the same way, electric cars and electric surfboards are starting to replace petrolpowered vehicles. Also, the electric jet-skis pop up with more and more prototypes. The electric PWC is currently still a concept as the battery technology still needs to improve. So far, the gasoline personal watercraft is still outperforming the e-jet in terms of range and speed. In addition, the charging is still timeconsuming. However, as with other vehicles, we think this will be just a matter of time. We believe the future is about the electric Jetski. So far, companies moving toward electric 162 PAC IF IC P W C 20 22
personal watercraft have stuck only a proverbial technological toe in the water. Still, with brands such as Sea-Doo announcing plans for an e-PWC, it may not be too long before we see the three mainstream PWC manufacturers offering e-PWCs in their lineups. We look at some of the latest innovators in the e-PWC market. Some have been discussed for a few years and are still very much in the development stage, but it will not be too long before electric PWCs are mainstream as the old fossil-fuelled skis are replaced.

Although the release date is a few years away, Sea-Doo is the first of the big three PWC brands to announce it is playing in the e-PWC market. SeaDoo calls it the E-GTI concept PWC. Targeted for model year 2026, not much has been released on the new all-electric Sea-Doo, apart from some concept drawings showing a very stylish craft. BRP have some time now stated that electrification was not a question of if, but a question of when. They are leveraging their engineering knowhow and innovation capabilities to define the best strategy for developing electric-powered products.
T
he first electric PWC to market was the strikingly angular, Hungarian-built Narke GT45 Electrojet, unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2018. Longer than Yamaha’s largest WaveRunner, with a weight of 375 kg and pushed by only a 60-hp motor, it has a stately top speed of just less than 30 knots. But the ElectroJet does occupy a niche. Because of its length, it’s classified as a small pleasure boat rather than a PWC, giving it access to protected lakes and bays where PWC aren’t allowed. The Electrojet has a water-cooled, three-phase asynchronous eDrive motor powered by a 24-kW lithium-ion battery pack. Its triangular Petestep hull is designed to have low drag, superior wave penetration and excellent spray deflection. Narke is taking orders for its new GT95 model, which has more than twice the power (127 hp) and a top speed of 37 knots. It has the option of an onboard quick-charger that finishes its job in 90 minutes. According to the manufacturer, it’s the perfect water toy for anyone who appreciates design, high-tech solutions and luxury – and cares about the planet. The ambitious Narke team has been working tirelessly since 2014 to make the Electrojet the perfect alternative to traditional gasoline-powered jet skis.

he second company to come to market with a production e-PWC is Québec-based Taiga Motors. It has had a functioning prototype since 2018, and it started selling the Founder’s Edition Orca in 2020. This model has a 180-hp motor first used on a snowmobile the company produces. It has enough kick for a top speed of 56 knots, the maximum agreed to with the Coast Guard for PWC sold in the United States. Taiga now sells three models of the Orca, and the hulls on each of them are small compared to most multiseat PWC. It’s closest in size to the industry’s most compact model, the Sea-Doo Spark 2-Up. The Performance model is Taiga’s heaviest. It weighs 267kg compared with the Spark 3-Up’s 192 kg, but the Orca Performance has 180 hp compared with the Spark’s 60/90-hp ratings. Taiga’s Orca Sport produces 120 hp, weighs 23 kg less than its stablemate, and has a slightly slower top speed of 48 knots. The third Orca model is the Performance Carbon which has a carbon fibre deck and hull and offers 16 saddle fabrics. Powering the Performance and Carbon model Orcas is a 24-kWh lithium-ion battery, while the Sport has a 20-kWh capacity battery. Taiga promises a three-hour charge time using a 6.6-kW charger and offers the option of a DC
166 PA C IF IC PW C 2 0 22
quick charge that will bring the battery to 80% in 20 minutes. Taiga claims a run time of two hours before needing to recharge, but with a listed range of only 31 or 37 miles, depending on the model, riders will have to cruise slowly to achieve that distance. Taiga Motors says it’s gone to great lengths to build a battery back that not only can withstand the punishment of riding at up to 65 miles per hour on open water but one that won’t lose its overall capacity when stowed away for the winter. All Orcas will come with a five-year, 20,000 km (roughly 12,427 miles) warranty. The Orca has a waterproof digital display between the handlebars, where riders can tap into what sounds
like a fair bit of technology, like GPS maps, LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth radios, information from embedded water temperature sensors, and feeds from onboard cameras and a sonar unit. And it wouldn’t be a modern mobility machine without a companion smartphone app and the ability to accept over-the-air updates, both of which Taiga Motors promises will accompany the Orca. Taiga has entered the market slowly, producing a limited run of 100 Founder’s Edition models, which sold out in 2020. The plan is to ramp up production dramatically with the capability of producing 80,000 PWC, snowmobiles and side-by-side off-road vehicles a year.

In March of that year, Free Form had launched the Gratis X1, the world’s first electric Jetski. At purchase time, Nikola CEO Trevor Milton said they were working to have something that would “outperform the top internal combustion versions on the water and provide up to a five-hour ride time with zero emissions and far less noise.” The Nikola WAV (Water Adventure Vehicle) is ‘inspired by the design of superbikes’ and promises to showcase a new

FISHING fromA PWC
Andrew Hill gives us an introduction to jetskifishing and offers some tips on how to set your pwc up to help you catch more fish.
168 PAC IF IC PW C 2 0 2 12
J
ETSKI FISHING started for me back in 2007 and while I appreciate that people will attempt the sport with different levels of equipment, I will highlight the many options. Obviously with purchasing a PWC there is the usual attraction of adrenalin fuelled action from simply being on the water, towing water toys or just cruising to a cool destination. But imagine the additional excitement of catching a big snapper as well! A reality is, the majority of us Jetski fisho’s are 30 plus and are mature enough to know that hours of hooning up down the beaches trying to impress girls or onlookers on a how cool my jet-ski looks is a short-term thrill. Going for an adventure out and beyond at full throttle, appreciating the different scenery and catching fish, can be just as addictive. That’s why I love the sport!
A 30 pounder from a PWC is what dreams are made of.
PO W ER B O AT MAG AZ I N E. CO.NZ 169
JETSKIFISING The sport has continued to grow and back in 2017 I was approached by BRP Sea-Doo to help design the first ever fishing specific personal watercraft. Sea-Doo wanted to tick all the boxes with having a proven ready to go pwc for the consumer to enjoy the sport of Jetskifishing all around the world. Prior to its release I tested the unit with the engineering team in Canada and Orlando, there was plenty of research and development. It was a busy couple of years prepping the new Sea-Doo FISH PRO ready for its global reveal in September 2018. Its introduction was very well received and now thousands of them are sold around the world each year. The sport has taken off so much, Sea-Doo has now added two more fishing models to their range for 2022. The fishing segment is now the fastest growing business for Sea-Doo and I continue representing Sea-Doo as their Global Brand Ambassador. The sport continues to grow for all pwc brands, Yamaha is also entering the fishing specific market for pwc and plenty of buyers are also choosing Kawasaki as another option. Aftermarket accessory solutions are great for customising, assuming you have the suitable craft, you too could be enjoying fishing adventures with whatever brand suits your budget. For most of us that’s getting a feed of Snapper or Kingfish so you don’t always need the biggest and most powerful watercraft. Keep in mind that not everyone is in search nor has the time to catch a Marlin, so my options won’t go as far as game fishing level. I have fished off all major brands and various models, and experience says that the bigger the hull is the priority. There is no need to be in search of supercharged and turbocharged watercraft, you can only ride so fast too and from your spot. Naturally aspirated engines are less maintenance, more reliable and best long-term resale value. Next on your list is rider comfort, maintenance costs, storage and features such as reverse, cruise control, adjustable handlebars, etc.
FISHING TIPS
I have found in New Zealand the most practical and successful fishing method off PWC’s is soft baiting and the reward keeps on coming when setup correctly. Don’t take shortcuts on tackle quality, the persistence of soft baiting has seen me catch many fish over 20 pounds and of late one over 30pounds! Once you have your ski, safety equipment and fishing rods (I only take two, or three maximums if fishing with a passenger). Attaching a cooler/chilly bin/ice chest to your fishing platform is the next stage of enjoying the sport to what makes it so exciting for us. The key is to be able to ride your ski to the same speeds (unrigged) with all your fishing equipment attached. We typically ride to and from our spots at 90kph plus, so the hardware needs to be built tough and well secured. You don’t want to be limited by the speed factor by worrying while riding of losing your fishing gear or complete kit off the back! We Kiwis have DIY in our nature, but in my experience adding a fishing kit is not worth reinventing the wheel, it will cost you more money in the long run with your R&D. Bigger has not necessarily proven a winner when it comes to fishing kits. Many dreams of filling the big bin and reality is, you don’t need a chilly bin that keeps ice cool for seven days. My experience is lightweight, easily removable and practical if you catch big Kingfish or keep a trophy fish we have large Ultimate Catch Bags for that.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Safety equipment is paramount, the sport is growing rapidly and no matter how experienced you are, you need to be prepared for all eventualities. We often will travel as far as 40nm offshore on late model fully kitted out craft for fishing, but with experience and a support crew. Some of the equipment we carry: • Vest. • Cell phone (fully charged) in a dry bag or case. • Handheld, Floating, High Wattage VHF. • Personal Locator Beacon (Worn at all times). • Permanently mounted 25watt VHF for poor signal conditions. • Shut off valve if you need a tow. • First Aid Kit. • Tow rope. • Emergency Anchor. • Drinking Water. • Eyewear, Jetski fishing Mask or Goggles. • Sharkskin Thermal Clothing. • Footwear. • Wet Weather Gear. • Riding Gloves (Fingerless). • Sunscreen.

Now that’s what it’s all ab out Andrew with a 25 kilo kingfish.
A small MFD is a must have option and can be easily fitted.
SOME TIPS FOR A PRACTICAL FISHING KIT/CHILLY BIN SET UP: • Securely attach at the main tow point on the ski • Use fixed points, not universal fitments that can move up and down or rattle/fracture at speed • Add rod holders at convenient locations, that are easily reached. • Uses rod tube inserts to prevent additional butt damage to lightweight, soft bait rods.
• Leashes to secure rods and nets to the rod holders (reel covers also attach to protect reels from salt spray) are a good addition. • Use marine tested tie down points, custom length bungy cords or rack straps to secure the kit at speed.
FISHFINDERS A MUST Many people new to the concept of Jetski fishing are amazed by what extent how we rig our craft. When I mention we also have electronics fitted such as fish finder/GPS units they don’t understand, until actually experiencing for themselves how much it changes their catching. The after-market electronics are the reason I have such great success with my Jetski fishing. Fish finders start as low as $200 but, unfortunately, the environment of Jetski fishing will test the product beyond its IPX ratings and more than likely spend little and endure ongoing issues unless you are a fair-weather fisher person. If your budget only allows you to purchase an entry or mid-priced unit and are considering installing it yourself, you can weigh up the following pros and cons. + Small units are easily mountable. + Avoid mounting in glovebox areas if possible. + If dash mounting, I recommend additional screwing plates to strengthen the dash. A unit needs to waterproof to a higher level and it
is recommended to use an Ultimate Rain Coat for added saltwater protection. • The 12-volt power source, fused direct from the battery should have marine cabling. • Transducers on low-cost units often have the transom transducer mounted internally inside various model skis at an area of flat and thin surface locations. • Transom transducers can easily be mounted on the rear transom of the PWC. + Touch screen units also require a button option to function on a PWC, as when your fingers are cold or wet you won’t always be able to operate it through the screen. installed in most PWC, not ideal for deeper water and readings at high speed. + While most sounders/GPS units will operate sufficiently off the PWC main battery, for added piece of mind many experienced jetski fisho’s opt for a secondary battery to run all add-on accessories.
• Have an easily removable chilly bin, so you don’t need to remove the mainframe to handle your fish. • Always have a fish measure and drainplug. • Additional equipment can be attached to your fishing kit such as a dive knife, icky, ice scoop, internal tray storage and large catch bags.
OTHER ACCESSORIES Other accessories to consider so you can enjoy Jetski fishing and be well prepared as I am, are: • Jetski fishing Mask • Sharkskin Thermal Balaclava • Ultimate Fishing Pouch for on the handle bars • Ultimate Reel Covers to protect your reels from salt water spray • Lure Wrap to secure your lures • Ultimate Catch Bag • Gaff • Net • Rollered Trailer with guide poles and wind up jockey wheel. • Sand Anchor for launching and retrieving in rocky areas. • Minimal tackle in a soft pouch so not to be damage while riding to and from spots. Our sport is fun and every session is a new adventure, do it once and do it right and you can enjoy the lifestyle of Jetski fishing. PO W ER B O AT MAG AZ I N E.CO.NZ 171
