E warned now, if you type Fallen Angels into Google, you’ll get a slew of lapdancing clubs come up, rather than Noël Coward’s play of the same name. That might have something to do with the fact that the play
was first staged in the West End at Shaftesbury Avenue’s Apollo Theatre more than a decade ago, and it’s taken this long for Bill Kenwright to revive the comedy for its current run. Starring Jenny Seagrove (Volcano, Judge John Deed) and
Sara Crowe (Private Lives, Hay Fever, Four Weddings and a Funeral), as best friends Julia and Jane, the play centres on the close pair awaiting the arrival of a longlost mutual lover while their rather dull husbands are off playing golf. Fluttery, flustered and in a
flap, they decide the best nervecalming action to take is: open the champagne. A good idea at glass one, by glass three (or four) they both start talking too much. Scathing, jealous and drunk to boot, the claws come out as they try to convince each other that

And he did it all using his own equipment (ie your standard laptop) holed up at #OneSongaWeek HQ, AKA his lounge. Every Friday a new track appeared alongside a blog all about it. At different points during the 52 weeks he nabbed support

The project might be over (it does sound like quite a lot of
work), but Frank is still slogging away, with his EP Summer out earlier this month. We reckon this grafter deserves a listen. Check him and his indie beard out – and discover whether he’s any good at all that songwriting malarkey – at Cambridge Junction on Sunday.

A look at the funny side of alcoholism

HOW do you keep your head when everyone else is off theirs? “So what brings you to the care industry? And please don’t say you want to make a difference.” When Andy, an idealistic young graduate, gets a job in a Wet House, a homeless hostel where residents can drink alcohol, he is plunged into a twilight world where the rules about what is right and what is normal have become a little blurred. And that’s just among the other staff. That’s the premise of Wet House, at Live Theatre in Newcastle until October 5, a comedy tinged with sadness and tragedy. Based on his own first-hand experience, Paddy Campbell’s startlingly original first full length play asks who will look after the people that no-one else will look after? It forms part of Live Theatre’s artistic director Max Roberts 40th birthday productions, which will see it pair up with Cooking With Elvis and will feature the likes of Joe Caffrey and Riley Jones, who have just completed a nationwide tour of The Pitmen Painters, taking to the stage in both plays.
Entertainment Editor GORDON BARR previews the new play Wet House Wet House is the first full-length play by 33-year-old Irish-born, Newcastle-based lad Paddy, who drew on first-hand experience working in a wet house (a hostel for homeless people that caters for alcoholics) to create this dark comedy. Joe Caffrey, who will play hostel resident Dinger, and Riley will be joined by Chris Connel (The Pitmen Painters), Jackie Lye, who made her professional stage debut in CP Taylor’s And A Nightingale Sang at Live Theatre over 30 years ago, David Nellist (You Really Couldn’t Make It Up) and Eva Quinn, who will be starring in her first full length Live Theatre production. Writer Paddy, who has been nurtured through Live Theatre’s new writing development programme, has been mentored by former Live Theatre writer-in-residence Lee
Hall (The Pitmen Painters, Billy Elliot). Lee said: “It’s fitting that in its 40th birthday year Live Theatre have unearthed and commissioned yet another exciting new writing talent. “Paddy’s play possesses a subject matter that is important and prescient, his characters smack of authenticity and there’s a searing emotional depth to the piece that is both arresting and heart breaking. He’s also seriously funny – it marks a highly impressive debut.” The world premiere of Wet House tonight will be followed by the return of Lee Hall’s provocative and hilarious play Cooking with Elvis which had its world premiere at Live Theatre in 1998. Fifteen years on, the play will again be directed by Max Roberts and actor Joe Caffrey reprises his role as a paralysed Elvis impersonator. Joe said: “Whilst I’m excited to be reprising my role of Dad/Elvis in Lee Hall’s Cooking with Elvis, I’m also looking forward to playing one of the unruly residents in Paddy Campbell’s darkly comic play.”

FOLLOWING on from a rather busy 2012, which saw Frank Hamilton release one song a week, 2013 has so far been surprisingly sedentary in comparison. If you call recording an EP aboard the London Eye in one singular rotation (28 mins), releasing the entire 52 track #OneSongAWeek album, touring with Lucy Spraggan & Lewis Watson, selling out The Borderline, playing at Belladrum & Secret Garden Party and working towards a 17 date UK headline tour this September and October sedentary! He’s at The Cluny 2 in Newcastle on Friday and to coincide with the headline tour, Frank will release Summer on October 7. The single is a revamped version taken from the #OneSongAWeek album and is produced by Richard Wilkinson (Adele, Bombay Bicycle Club, Lewis Watson). Frank Hamilton is not a sit at home and do nothing type of guy, or artist for that matter. Over his career to date he has made some incredible achievements, including collaborations with Ed Sheeren and Newton Faulkner. Frank puts it down to hard work, gigging and a stong loyal fanbase. RISING star Frank Hamilton’s cover of Wheatus track Teenage Dirtbag was such a massive hit with the band, they’ve invited him to sing with them. The English singer-songwriter, who plays the Arches in Glasgow tomorrow night, was approached by Wheatus frontman Brendan B Brown, below, to join them on their tour-closing London show. Frank said: “My video went up on YouTube and I remember sitting in traffic on the M25 when a tweet from Wheatus came
through saying they liked it. Fast forward a few months and the cover had been so well received that I decided to put it on my EP and set about recording it. “Brendan’s a true gent and a great sport. “Not only did he give it his blessing but also said he’d love to be involved. “Obviously I was pretty shocked and stoked about it. “I remember buying their first album back in the day and falling in love with it, so to be working together on a cover of a song from that record is pretty special.”
