Artist Statement: Art is an important element in people’s lives. In my opinion everything surrounding us is considered as art and we can not live without it. I am passionate about art in general and in graphic design in specific. My design work is a reflection of what I observe in the environment that surround me, and is a response to community needs or problems. It is the way that I can spread awareness to people, educate them, and send massages in an effective way. I am inspired by many things through the UAE and especially in Dubai. The UAE combines modern, tradition, and culture in building and the lifestyle of the people who live there. This combination is related to me because I like to work in a modern way and get inspired from my culture and apply it to my work. As an art student I am interested in different kinds of art and design including typography, packaging, printmaking, and sculpture. I think developing these skills are important as my graphic design skill. I can explore my ideas and thoughts through all these skills. Sometimes as a designer I need to emphasis some areas in the projects with these skills, so that my massage will be delivered and be more understandable. My work contributes to social change on global and local scale with special attention to environmental problems, in UAE. Moreover, my work contributes to the growth of bilingual typography in my country about helping share culture and traditions. As well as this, to focus on designing and branding my country to show people more about different area in the UAE for both locals and foreign. My main aim as a graphic designer is to raise awareness about social, cultural, and environmental issue by using my graphic design skills.

because we can!

cha n ge s !

Our memories are full of sadness. Our dreams are full of joy. Our futures are full of potential and that is why they’re great. You don’t know it yet, but these things are what make you unique. Let’s enjoy all our memories, dreams and futures because you and I can.

Changes. In life there must be changes, changes that are better and don›t make life harder, making people happier and making peace. But this is life, I see no changes that are making life happy. I see racism, war and poverty. Hate is found everywhere people go. Do some love.

best memory

be in g u n iqu e

My best memory? My 1999 trip to Brazil! A Brazilian, my father met on the Internet, invited us to visit Rio. He rented a house near the sea and gave us bicycles. Later, he came to Riyadh and he, his mother and son, became Muslims. They still live in Riyadh.

Keep empowering yourself, absorbing experiences to exchange educational and cultural understandings. Share and exploit your creativity to create your own world. Let’s have correlations among all of us who desire to build a unique path to success. Let›s share our stories as a tool, destroying illiteracy and enriching our knowledge.

childhood dreams of future

childhood memories

be l ie v e in you r s e l f

What are my dreams made of? Memories have been my values since childhood because I use them every day to accomplish dreams in the future. I find many obstacles in real life. However, I always keep dreaming that in the future I will serve my country, the UAE, with honor.

Everyone has a memory about their childhood, some memories are wonderful and other memories are not. When someone asks about their childhood, before saying anything, most people smile, because their childhood memories are happy and interesting, not sad. But not everyone likes their memories, some people feel sadness and misery.

Believe in yourself… Whenever you give up on life, think about the good memories... when you feel like you don›t know what to do, think about your dream and make it come true... when you feel like you›ve had enough, say that there is a better day... Believe in yourself…

castle of fantasia

being alien

déjà vu

Good night. I sleep. I dream a castle of cream, a princess who screams, and a train of ice cream that produces steam. The castle›s spirals of berries spread their smell of delicacy and inspiration. A waterfall of sparkles makes a cat›s whiskers crackle. I wake up. Nothing ever happens.

One day I dreamed about something very strange. I dreamed that I was an alien and I lived in space and my face looked very different. I knew it was a dream but it felt so real

What gives us the shivers with déjà vu is when one feels that an occurrence has happened before. It is the recurrence of trivial details. It revives the same situation with exact details; odor, color. Although it›s mystifying, déjà vu has a euphoric aura about it. It leaves one nostalgic.

betrayal of trust

Once upon a time there was a girl in a village in the Arabian Gulf. She was in love with a boy that she liked a lot. Their dreams grew up. He proposed to her but was rejected. After many years, they met at work, but she was already married.

She turned to look at her. “Maybe you were afraid… Since you’ve been so nice to me these past weeks, I began to think you were my friend.” She paused, the hurt obvious in her eyes. “Don’t worry. I’ll never make that mistake again.” She turned and walked away.

blind The future. An unknown dimension where everything is mysterious. Personally, I find that too frightening. Who am I? Am I an entity? I hunt, but I can’t find. I search but I can’t unearth. I look but I can›t see. Do I not exist? Or am I just blind ?

On Sunday 3rd of February CACE Assistant professor Marco Sosa had a book launch and signing at the Art Hub Abu Dhabi. The book entitled Al Bidiya Mosque, a visual essay is the first publication under ZU Books (Zayed University Books).

Bidiya Mosque Book Release Signing

The book provides a pictorial insight into the Al Bidiya Mosque in the Emirate of Al Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. The book uses black and white photography to explore the building’s presence as a place of worship, as a living working “vessel” of historical, cultural, and religious importance in the UAE.

The publication provides a personal view of the mosque to the public, nationally and internationally. The book also contains an essay by Dr. Ronald Hawker providing historical context and a conversation between the author and the artist Udo Rutschmann. The event was organized by Art Hub as part of the British Art Month and was presented by CACE Visual Arts Major, Anood Abdul Malek Abdul Kharem Abdulrahman.

uring the Fall 2011 semester, Assistant professors Denielle Emans and Stefan Messam teamed with Peter Hassel in the Department of Languages on an anthology for the extremely short story competition (ESSC). Based on the single theme Our Memories, Dreams & Future, the book includes stories written by students from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the UAE. Graphic design students individually created narrative collages to enhance the meaning of their chosen short stories and collectively worked as a class to create the final publication. Professor Emans spoke about the design process alongside Graphic Design Majors Fatma Al Hashemi and Roudha Al Sabousi at the Women at the Women As Global Leaders Conference, at Hult International Business School, and at the Shelter Gallery. The publication project led to an exciting opportunity for the Fall 2012 students to work on an anthology of 25 award-winning extremely short stories with the Toyo Eiwa University in Japan. Graphic Design I students designed the publication from cover to cover using narrative collages created by students from the men’s and women’s University. The forthcoming release serves as a powerful statement about the cross-cultural and professional opportunities CASE students are discovering in their art and design studies.

In

Spring 2012, Professor Emans’ Typography I course partnered with a graphic class at the University of San Francisco in an international design education project that spanned 8,092 miles and an 11-hour time difference. Students photographically explored their cities and shared initial visual research with their partners to develop two posters expressing their impressions of the cities. Next, using assigned critical texts, partners collaborated on a poster remix, exploring themes such as environments, history, and immigration issues. Finally, students incorporated process work, design artifacts, and project reflections into a book that describes both classes’ experiences. Friendships formed between many students, with unprompted efforts to continue dialogues and collaboration outside the confines of the course structure. Professor Emans spoke about the international collaboration at the AIGA Geographics Conference in Hawaii in December 2012.

Fall 2012, a team-taught course entitled “Design for Social Change” examined social responsibility and sustainability in professional design practice. Initiated by Assistant Professor of Interior Design, Adina Hempel, and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Denielle Emans, the multidisciplinary course asked students to form small teams surrounding a self-selected global issue, resulting in topics such as war, pollution, energy, overconsumption, and the gap between rich and poor. The team-taught course asked students to confront global challenges, to generate a call to action using video and three-dimensional space, and to examine how design can impact positive social change. Professor Emans and Hempel will offer the course in Spring 2013 and speak about the project outcomes at the Tasmeem Conference in Doha, Qatar in March 2013.
