Contemporary Classical Architecture John B. Murray

Architecture September 18, 2018 256 pages 9½ x 11½ inches 220 color illustrations $65/$86 Canada Hardcover 978-1-58093-503-6 World rights

Text by Elizabeth Brooke Murray Foreword by Bunny Williams

John B. Murray is a recognized leader in adapting classical design principles for contemporary life, creating elegant and gracious urban and country residences, a number of which were featured in his first book, Classical Invention: The Architecture of John B. Murray. His firm, John B. Murray Architect, is committed to a timeless aesthetic, a simplicity of form, and superb craftsmanship enriched by a skillful interpretation of classical details. Here, in a further exploration of his design process and the possibilities of a contemporary look at the classical vernacular, Murray presents fifteen very different residences that demonstrate an extraordinary mastery of the classical vocabulary and a sensitivity to proportion and scale. Within that framework, he inserts the comforts of contemporary living in a way that is seamless and completely logical. The projects range from Fifth Avenue, Central Park West and South apartments to new country

houses and sympathetic renovations and additions to historic structures in keeping with their local histories, including additions to a pristine neoclassical retreat in Dutchess County, the siting and transformation of a reclaimed barn as family gathering and performance space in Columbia County, and the renovation of the President’s House of a New England university. John B. Murray is founder of John B. Murray Architect, a New York firm specializing in city and country residences designed in the classical tradition. Educated at Carnegie Mellon University, Murray joined the firm Parish-Hadley, where he worked with the legendary designer Albert Hadley, and opened his own office in 1997. Former contributing writer to The New York Times and features editor of Town & Country, Elizabeth Heilman Brooke Murray is the managing director of John B. Murray Architect.

Marian Bantjes Foreword by Stefan Sagmeister

This expanded paperback edition of typographic illustrator Marian Bantjes’s debut book will make you think in new ways about art, design, beauty, and popular culture. I Wonder introduces the highly ornamental and elaborately crafted word pictures of Bantjes, who has developed a cult following around the design world. Whether intricately hand-drawn or using computer illustration software, Bantjes’s work crosses the boundaries of time, style, and technology. Bantjes’s thoughtful treatises on a range of aesthetic and cultural topics add a deeper dimension to the decorative nature of her best-known work. These reflections cover the cult of Santa, road-side advertising, photography and memory, the alphabet’s letterforms, heraldry, and stars. Bantjes’s writing style ranges from the playful to the confrontational, but it is always imbued with perspicacity, insight, and a sense of

fun. Intended to inspire creatives of any persuasion, this is more than a collection of ideas: Bantjes has meticulously illustrated every page of the book in her inimitable style to create an accessible work of art that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Quirky, poignant, astute, funny—this beautiful book presents a compelling collection of observations on visual culture and design. In Stefan Sagmeister’s telling words, Bantjes’s work is his “favorite example of beauty facilitating the communication of meaning.” Marian Bantjes started working as a book typesetter in Canada in the mid-1980s, later opening her own successful firm. In 2003, working in her studio on a small island off the coast of Vancouver, she began to develop her own style of typography. Since then, her work has developed an international following.

Since 1965 the New York City Landmarks Law has preserved for generations to come a remarkable number of significant spaces in New York City’s cultural, social, economic, political, and architectural history. Not only do the exterior facades of these buildings fall within the law’s purview, but many of their stunning interiors do as well. Interior Landmarks: Treasures of New York tells the stories of forty-six interior landmarks, of their original construction and style, their exceptional design features, materials, and architectural details—then of the challenges to preserving them, the restorations or re-imaginings that took place, and the preservationists, philanthropists, politicians, and designers involved. Carefully researched text is illustrated by splendid color photography by Larry Lederman. A catalogue of all 120 interior landmarks, with names of their architects and locations, is also included.

Design historian Judith Gura is director of the Design History and Theory Program at the New York School of Interior Design and a contributing editor to Art & Auction magazine. Her previous books include Design After Modernism: Furniture and Interiors 1970–2010; New York Interior Design 1935–1985; and Sourcebook of Scandinavian Furniture: Designs for the 21st Century. Kate Wood is a preservation specialist and an advisor to the Historic Districts Council. She is a principal in At Home in the Hudson Valley. Helen Thompson Photography by Casey Dunn Foreword by Lawrence W. Speck

Helen Thompson and Casey Dunn, the writer/photographer team that produced the exceptionally successful Marfa Modern, join forces again to investigate Texas modernism. The juxtaposition of the sleek European forms with a gritty Texas spirit generated a unique brand of modernism that is very basic to the culture of the state today. Its roots are in the early Texas pioneer houses, whose long, low profiles express an efficiency that is basic to the modern idiom. This Texas-centric style is focused on the relationship of the house to the site, the materials it is made of—most often local stone and wood—and the way the building functions in the harsh Texas climate. Nineteen houses are included from across the state, with examples in major urban centers like Dallas and Austin and in suburban and rural areas, including a number in the evocative Hill Country.

Helen Thompson is a nationally known writer who specializes in interior design, architecture, kitchen design, and food. She was formerly a food writer and editor for Texas Monthly magazine. She has also been the Texas city editor for Metropolitan Home magazine. She has also written and produced articles for Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, Western Interiors, Traditional Home, Veranda, Country Home, and many other magazines. She is the author of Marfa Modern (The Monacelli Press), The Big Texas Steakhouse Cookbook, and The Mansion on Turtle Creek Cookbook. Casey Dunn is an Austin-based architectural and landscape photographer whose work has appeared in Dwell, the New York Times Magazine, Interior Design, Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, and Paper City Magazine.

Le Corbusier: The Built Work

Architecture/ Photography

Richard Pare Text by Jean-Louis Cohen

November 27, 2018 480 pages 11½ x 10¼ inches 500 color photographs $125 Hardcover 978-1-58093-471-8 North America rights

Le Corbusier is widely acknowledged as the most influential architect of the twentieth century. As extensively researched and documented as his works are, however, they have never been exhaustively surveyed in photographs until now. Photographer Richard Pare has crossed the globe for years to document the extant works of Le Corbusier—from his first villas in Switzerland to his mid-career works in his role as the first global architect in locations as far-flung as Argentina and Russia, and his late works, including his sole North American project, at Harvard University, and an extensive civic plan for Chandigarh, India. Le Corbusier: The Built Work provides numerous views of each project to bring a fuller understanding of the architect’s command of space, sometimes surprising use of materials and color, and the almost ineffable qualities that only result from a commanding

synthesis of all aspects of design. With an authoritative text by scholar and curator Jean-Louis Cohen, Le Corbusier: The Built Work is a groundbreaking opportunity to appreciate the master’s work anew. Architectural photographer Richard Pare is the author of the seminal The Lost Vanguard: Russian Modernist Architecture 1922 –1932 (The Monacelli Press). He was the founding curator of the photography collection of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and a consultant to the collection since 1989. Jean-Louis Cohen is Sheldon H. Solow Professor in the History of Architecture at NYU and founder of the Cité de l’architecture, a museum, research, and exhibition center in Paris’s Palais de Chaillot. His research activity has been chiefly focused on twentieth-century architecture and urban planning.

Kate Ascher and Thomas Mellins

New York Rising presents a broad survey of real estate development in Manhattan, from the first European settlement in the seventeenth century through the skyscrapers and urban planning schemes of the late twentieth century, illustrated with images drawn largely from the Durst Collection at Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Columbia University. Ten leading scholars—the late Hilary Ballon, Ann Buttenwieser, Andrew Dolkart, David King, Reinhold Martin, Richard Plunz, Lynne B. Sagalyn, Hilary Sample, Russell Shorto, and Carol Willis—delved into the collection to select objects that reflect their own areas of interest and expertise. Using these materials, they have created visual narratives on specific topics, focusing on the Dutch and English governance of Manhattan, the growth of the city according to the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, the emergence of the public transit system, the “race for height,”

the rise of multi-family and affordable housing, the transformation of Midtown into a commercial center, urban renewal in the Moses era, the revival of Times Square, and the reclaiming of the waterfront as public space. Essays by Kate Ascher and Thomas Mellins provide a framework for exploring these topics. Kate Ascher is the Milstein Professor of Urban Development at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University and a partner at BuroHappold. She is the author of The Works, The Heights, and The Way to Go. Thomas Mellins is an architectural historian and independent curator. He is a co-author with Robert A.M. Stern of New York 1880 and New York 1960 and a contributor to The American Style and Gilded New York, all published by The Monacelli Press.

David Benjamin Foreword by Paola Antonelli Essays by Kevin Slavin, Eyal Weizman, Alejandro Zaeta-Polo, Mark Lee, and Sharon Johnston In the context of massive and accelerating change, the nature of architectural design is also evolving and coming to life in new ways. Founded by David Benjamin, New York-based office The Living has developed a unique design approach that explores projects through the application of new technologies, materials, and the growing field of generative design (design that uses software to emulate nature’s evolutionary processes). These methods are futuristic, even utopian, but also raw and immediate in their application of hands-on prototyping and testing through making.

cradle-to-cradle architecture, and other cutting edge techniques. Benjamin executes numerous projects that demonstrate these surprising methods, including Hy-Fi, a branching tower for MoMA PS1 made of a new type of biodegradable brick; and new cabin dividers for Airbus that are nearly 50 percent lighter than traditional ones using principles of adaptive networks to design the structure. For an era where rapid change is the norm, The Living demonstrates how future design practices can embrace uncertainty and generate surprising solutions to tomorrow’s challenges.

Now We See Now chronicles the projects and findings of The Living’s bold new work in generative design and other intersections of science and architecture. In it David Benjamin explains his methodologies through numerous projects and abundant research that are making real inroads to bio-sensing, computational design,

David Benjamin is founding principal of The Living and Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP. Benjamin’s work combines research and practice focusing on the intersection of biology, computation, and design. Edited by Marisa Bartolucci Foreword by Hattula Moholy-Nagy

Bridging the Bauhaus and American modernism, Richard Filipowski (1923– 2008) was among the most gifted design polymaths of the twentieth century. A painter, sculptor, and designer of furniture and jewelry, Filipowski developed a lush, abstract, and amazingly consistent visual language that marks him among the finest figures of midcentury art and design. As a student at the Institute of Design (formerly the New Bauhaus) in Chicago, he quickly became a protégé of founder László Moholy-Nagy, who featured several of Filipowski’s works in his seminal text Vision in Motion (1947). Recruited by Walter Gropius to develop a course in design fundamentals at Harvard, which remains a cornerstone of design pedagogy to this day, he then taught at MIT for more than three decades, until his retirement in 1988.

Richard Filipowski: Art and Design Beyond the Bauhaus is the first monograph of this master, who over the course of his career created a unique body of work in diverse media that has largely, until recently, been held in private collections. But now design scholars are contributing new research into Filipowski’s graphic and painted works, sculpture, furniture, and position in design history, revealing him to a new generation of aficionados. Richard Filipowski is a rich document of a life and career that is poised to reenter the canon of modernism. Marisa Bartolucci is a veteran design journalist, editor, and author of several books. Bartolucci currently contributes to 1stdibs Introspective, as well as Interior Design, Modern, The Magazine Antiques, Sotheby’s, and Wallpaper. She lives in Rhode Island.

Robert A.M. Stern with Gideon Fink Shapiro

In September 2017, Yale University opened two residential colleges, Benjamin Franklin College and Pauli Murray College, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York. Initially designed by James Gamble Rogers and built in the 1930s, Yale’s residential colleges are the cornerstone of undergraduate life, breaking down the student population into smaller, more close-knit communities. The new colleges, the first to be added to the campus in fifty years, are designed both to relate to Rogers’s model and to bring twenty-first-century standards of communal living and environmental responsibility to college residential life. The New Residential Colleges at Yale documents this monumental project through original drawings, models, material samples, and specially commissioned color photography and situates the buildings and their site within the context of the Yale campus

and its distinguished architectural tradition. Architect, educator, and architectural historian Robert A.M. Stern is the founding partner of Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Dean of the Yale School of Architecture from 1998 to 2016, he is co-author of a five-volume history of New York’s architecture and urbanism as well as Paradise Planned: The Garden Suburb and the Modern City. Writer and researcher Gideon Fink Shapiro holds a doctorate in architectural history and theory from the University of Pennsylvania. He has contributed to the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Architect, Domus, the Guggenheim Blog, Next City, and the Architect’s Newspaper.

Ramiro Fernández Foreword by Richard Blanco

Since the first edition of Cuba Then was published in 2014, there have been seismic shifts in the island nation’s political and international standing. This revised and expanded edition introduces more than 100 dazzling new images to satisfy the demand for more exposure to Cuba’s alluring and complicated past. These newly selected vintage photographs and pieces of ephemera from the collection of Ramiro Fernández—at more than 8,000 pieces, the most extensive archive of Cuban photography outside of the island nation—make Cuba Then a tribute to the lost eras of style, glamour, ebullience, intrigue, and upheaval. The more than 300 images here also span the spectrum of early photographic history, including rare daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cartes-de-visite, and stereograms. A colorful array of distinctly Cuban personalities appear in these pages: aristocratic race-car drivers, movie stars

and showgirls, gangsters, revelers at Carnival and férias, and everyday folk. Much of Fernández’s collection is little seen and never published, including a unique view of Castro riding on a public bus, drinking a Coca-Cola. Cuba Then is a welcome new edition of this seductive photographic survey of the small island that continues to fascinate the world. Ramiro Fernández was born in Havana. He left Cuba in 1960, eventually working as a photography editor at Time Inc. for twenty-five years.

Rene Gonzalez Text by Beth Dunlop, Caroline Roux, Tod Williams, and Billie Tsien

“Mr. Gonzalez, who has lately emerged as one of Miami’s most influential young architects, is known for the modernist rigor and simplicity of his work but also his imaginative use of materials.” —Raul A. Barreneche, The New York Times Tactile, experiential, and holistic, the work of Rene Gonzalez Architects engages with the environment and explores how people touch nature and how nature touches people. Surveying fourteen residential, commercial, and cultural projects marking the first phase of his career, Rene Gonzalez Architects: Not Lost in Translation demonstrates the qualities of refinement and material innovation that distinguish Gonzalez’s work. His home state of Florida has a dynamic architecture market, but is also where sea level rise, due to climate change, will drastically alter design practice in coming years, and where RGA is receiving widespread attention for its efforts to respond.

Featuring essays by Beth Dunlop and Caroline Roux, as well as a Q&A with Gonzalez’s friends Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Rene Gonzalez Architects: Not Lost in Translation documents his commitment to creating a progressive regionalism that does not sacrifice design excellence to meet the challenge of design resiliency. Rene Gonzalez is principal of Rene Gonzalez Architects. He is the recipient of AIA Miami’s 2012 H. Samuel Kruse Silver Medal for Design. In 2011, RGA received AIA Miami’s Firm of the Year award. Gonzalez’s work has been published in more than 200 publications, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, Interior Design, Dwell, and The Miami Herald.

As the birthplace of American landscape painting, the Hudson River Valley has long been a refuge from the city and a laboratory for new aesthetic expression. Today, thanks to its ascendant reputation as a weekend utopia, architects are extending that tradition into the built environment. Designing residences that revere local climate, landscape, and history in a distinctly modernist language, these talents are sowing a new Hudson River school of architectural thought. Hudson Modern surveys this emerging domestic architecture, featuring nearly twenty houses that integrate with site and region through composition, scale, and materials, and which strike a balance between innovation and rootedness. Author David Sokol presents these and numerous other examples of designforward residences that are responsive to terrain, building vernacular, and cultural legacy. Together, the new Hudson Valley houses point a way

forward for rural living in the twentyfirst century. David Sokol is a New York-based journalist specializing in architecture and design. He is a contributing editor at Architectural Record and Cultured magazines, and he writes regularly for Azure, Departures, and multiple other publications.

Figure Drawing Atelier An Instructional Sketchbook

Art instruction March 2019 128 pages 7½ x 9 inches 100 illustrations $25/$34 Canada Hardcover 978-1-58093-513-5 World rights

Juliette Aristides

Figure Drawing Atelier offers a contemporary twist to the very traditional Atelier approach to the methods that instruct artists on the techniques they need to successfully draw and ultimately paint the figure. The book offers art instruction, practical and progressive lessons on drawing the figure, and high-quality, sketchbook paper in a beautiful package that includes blank pages for sketching and copying. Artists will then have a record of their process, like with a sketchbook, which many artists like to document and save. In this elegant workbook, illustrated work of past and present masters, Juliette Aristides breaks down the figure drawing process into small, manageable lessons; presents them progressively; introduces time-tested principles and techniques in the Atelier tradition; and shares the language and context necessary to understand the artistic process and create superior, well-

crafted drawings. teacher—along with 400 examples of artwork by 50 classic and contemporary master illustrators, talented students, and Houston himself—Illstration that Works demonstrates exactly why illustration is so important to the way we see and communicate, and how it can be done effectively in an infinite number of styles. Everyday Sketching and Drawing Five Steps to a Unique and Personal Sketchbook Habit

Art instruction April 24, 2018 192 pages 8¼ x 10 inches 400 illustrations $24/$32 Canada Trade paperback 978-1-58093-50-50 World rights

Steven B. Reddy Foreword by Gary Faigin, afterword by Stephanie Bower Everyday Sketching and Drawing offers an easy-to-follow, 5-step formula, which teaches beginner-friendly techniques for learning the skills necessary to make drawing and sketching an everyday habit. For those who have always wanted to or tried and failed to learn to draw, it provides simple step-by-step instruction, plus easy-to-follow practice exercises, and provides the motivation and inspiration readers need to be successful. For those who already draw, Everyday Sketching and Drawing offers another technique to add to their drawing arsenal. Steven Reddy’s drawing method produces extremely detailed and realistic drawings of objects and scenes in everyday life in a relatively short period of time (60 minutes to 3 hours or more, depending on the sketcher’s preference). Modifying a technique utilized by Old Master oil painters, the drawings pass through 5 clearly articulated stages where each step focuses on one visual concept at a time.

Steven B. Reddy teaches drawing and illustration at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle. He has also taught for the Seattle Public Schools since 1998. Reddy has a passion for creating detailed illustrations of urban scenes, cluttered interiors, and complex still lifes on location in ink and watercolor. His drawings from China and Mexico appear in Danny Gregory’s An Illustrated Journey. Reddy also self-published Now Where Was I? An Illustrated Memoir, which showcases drawings that span 35 years from his daily sketchbook diaries. He teaches two popular classes on drawing and sketching in pen and ink and watercolor for Craftsy. stevenreddy. com

Acrylic Painting Mediums and Methods A Contemporary Guide to Materials, Techniques, and Applications

Art instruction June 26, 2018 272 pages 8½ x 10½ inches 600 color illustrations $40/$50 Canada Hardcover 978-1-58093-493-0 World rights

Rhéni Tauchid Foreword by Alice Teichert

This new, sophisticated, comprehensive reference book will inspire and instruct painters on how to handle today’s acrylics in innovative and individualistic ways. Acrylics have grown into the most adaptable art material for the modern age. Developments in the pigment industry have given acrylics a remarkably permanent, rich, and abundant palette, making it the favorite medium of many contemporary artists. As colors are being developed, their chemical components are also enhanced for better texture and handling. Over twenty step-by-step demonstrations teach you how to apply mediums to create vibrant colors, sensuous surfaces, and striking visual effects. Hundreds of beautiful photos illustrate mediums’ almost limitless potential and show you how other artists—both abstract and realist—are employing mediums to push their art in new creative directions. The

first book of its kind, this essential reference belongs on every acrylic painter’s shelf. Rhéni Tauchid is a writer, painter, and educator. In her professional life, she is the materials consultant for the Canadian acrylic paint manufacturer Tri-Art Mfg., Inc., a member of the company’s product development team, and the founder of the Tri-Art Acrylic Education Program and the Art Noise studio program. She teaches painting workshops and lectures in Canada and abroad. Tauchid is the author of The New Acrylics and its sequel, New Acrylics Essential Sourcebook. Her books have been translated into Dutch and German. Acrylic Painting Mediums & Methods, her third book, explores the intricacies and possibilities of acrylic mediums. She is based in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
