Monarca owns a nursery that provides all of the flowers and leaves used in the accessories, and obtains the wings from certified butterfly breeders, that ship the wings once the butterflies have finished their life cycle. Monarca guarantees that no butterfly is harmed in the process of making the jewelry. By supporting legal certified breeder business all over the world, you are supporting and helping the conservation of our ecosystems, on average, for each butterfly we use in our products, two have been released to the wild by our breeders.

Monarca Eco Friendly Jewelry started in Popayan, Colombia as Antheia Accessories. In the beginning, our company worked exclusively with flowers and leaves in sterling silver with results that exceeded our expectations. A year later, we started incorporating an element that brought a great addition to our products: butterfly wings from cruelty free breeders around the world. Butterflies live a very short life, and once they have finished their natural life cycle, their wings are recycled and can be used in handcrafts such as cards, candles, picture frames and jewelry. Realizing that Colombia is ranked as the 3rd most bio-diverse country in terms of species of butterflies in the world, and one of the most bio-diverse in flower species, we wanted to use our products to create awareness about our biodiversity and support the legal butterfly breeders that had only recently started to rise in our country. Legal butterfly breeders which we utilize which we utilize must release a part of the butterflies they breed into the wild; to ensure the continuity of the populations of species they are breeding stay healthy. By supporting those businesses, and small companies like ours, our customers are not only buying a unique handmade piece, but are also supporting the conservation of our environment. Monarca is licensed as a ‘Marketer and processor of biological diversity specimens� business by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cauca (CRC), the environmental regulatory entity in our state. License 4864 of Feb 17th 2014.
One of the most important facts about our company, besides our environmental awareness, is that every single piece is 100% handmade. Every flower is harvested, pressed and dried. Some of flowers are dyed to obtain brighter colors for our pieces. The delicate work with butterfly wings is also prepared by hand in every step of the production. The designs, the hand cut of the pieces and the excellent finishes in our products are the result of the efforts and training of the women we employ. As practice, Monarca makes an effort to employ single mothers, and to further empower the women in Colombia. These women have been working with us, learning and improving their skills to achieve a perfect piece every time.
