From those baby steps Torah emerged as a serious talent, turning pro at the age of 14 and by 2003/04, was the main focus of the FIS World Cup Ratings, following the third round of her first World Cup Season. The title of the 2007 TTR Women’s World Tour Championship followed, as did gold at the 2007 Winter X Games and then two-time World Superpipe Champion and the Nippon Open. Show celebrates Year of the Farmer The 2012 Westpac Cooma Show, to be held on March 10, will celebrate the Australia Year of the Farmer in a number of different ways. Having been honoured by receiving the “Community Event and Community Group of the Year” awards in the Cooma-Monaro Australia Day celebrations, the Cooma Pastoral and Agricultural Association, has a busy program planned for this year. The show will be opened by the GovernorGeneral Quentin Bryce, AC, who is also patron of the Australian Year of the Farmer. The show will host the Year of the Farmer Roadshow, which is visiting 300 venues across Australia. The Roadshow has already departed on its epic journey around Australia. Performing at the show will be the Federation Guard, a precision marching team which is guaranteed to get feet tapping in time to the drums. There are a couple of extra activities this year too - Allens Funerals have graciously sponsored a “Resurrection Art” competition. This competition is for keen welders – the object is to create a piece of art out of scrap metal, within a metre by metre dimensions. First prize is $200. Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is sponsoring a “Waste to Art” competition, using materials which would otherwise be disposed of in the landfill.

Council’s ‘open house’

There are first, second and third prizes for this. Mainstreet Clothing is sponsoring a “Best Loved” hat, oilskin and/or boots competition, with the prize a pair of RM Williams riding boots. Our local ABC Radio station will be broadcasting live form the show during the morning and is also sponsoring a decorated gumboot competition. Cooma Rodeo Association is sponsoring a competition for photos taken at this year’s rodeo on February 11. There is $100 up for grabs in two divisions – action and non action. As well, there will be a ‘Farmers Challenge’ open to all comers, incorporating activities usually seen on a farm, but for Cooma Show, will be on the showground oval. There is good prizemoney for the winners. Children haven’t been forgotten, either, with a patting paddock, the Great Zamboni and the very popular Sumo Suit wrestling. As well, there are the sheep, fleece, cattle, horse, goat and pavilion competitions and exhibits. The fine arts section this year has benefited from the very generous donation from an anonymous donor, with impressive prizemoney and a special “Year of the Farmer” theme.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council conducted community consultations throughout the Shire area last year in preparation for its first Community Strategic Plan. Through this process, a series of “community conversations” were held in each village and in Cooma. In addition to this, staff and Councillors attended market days, an on-line survey was established, and individual presentations and “conversations” were held with smaller groups including youth groups, sporting associations and schools students. The Community Strategic Plan will initially be produced as a Draft document and will be placed on Public Exhibition during May and June this year seeking comments. This is a similar process to previous years when Council prepared a Draft Management Plan. Council will be holding an Open House at the Cooma Multifunction Centre on Tuesday February 28. It welcomes participation from everyone in the area and invites representatives from all the Village

and Community Groups and Associations. The Open House will commence from 2pm with a welcome address by Council’s Mayor, Dean Lynch and also a presentation on an interim Draft document by General Manager, John Vucic. “The earlier session will provide an opportunity for individuals to come along and see what’s in the interim draft plan, and we’ll have a question and answer forum with static displays of the main themes and issues contained within the interim draft plan” Mayor, Dean Lynch, said. A separate session is set for Village and Community Groups and Associations from 7pm to 9pm. “We look forward to community participation and assistance in developing and finalising our first Draft Community Strategic Plan” General Manager, John Vucic, said.

Mural to tackle graffiti in Jindabyne www.snowliner.com.au

Instances of graffiti in Jindabyne, Berridale and the surrounding area appear to be on the upswing. Members of the Espy youth council, Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce, local press and general public have highlighted illegal graffiti as a major problem for the area and detrimental to our image. In November, the youth health and development worker

Owls are a long-standing symbol of knowledge and wisdom, and an obvious choice for the mural. After collaborating with 10 young people, Ben submitted a draft design. It was sent to the property owner and to the Public Art Advisory panel for approval. As soon as that approval was granted – the second week in January – Ben contacted the young people and got to work. The basic owl shapes were sketched out by Ben, giving the piece consistency. Young people were then given free rein to design their owl’s ‘internals’ – the eyes, cowl, design and colours. More than 20 young people worked on the wall between Monday 16 and Friday January 20. Some of the owls were completed by one dedicated young person, and others collaboratively. There’s a mechanical owl by the very talented Crystal Stynes, a bookowl from Owen Pearson, and a musical owl by Michaela Ripper. Ben did the fatherly owl in the middle of the mural.

Mural designer Ben Eyles with some of his hard working crew. contacted a local business owner to propose a mural be used to replace the graffiti on one of his buildings. This led to contact with another property owner, and we were given permission to paint murals on two buildings in Jindabyne – the rear wall of the Mitre 10 building, and the end of the Razorback Plaza. Torah blitzed the field to take out the gold in the Women’s Half-pipe, making her the fourth Australian to win a Winter Olympics gold medal. It was a wonderful moment! Torah took a year off from competing, following her spectacular win, but is back on the competition circuit now. Meanwhile, Torah is thrilled with having been awarded the OAM. “It’s very exciting!” Marion Bright said, confirming the family’s delight. “Torah has been a great ambassador all around the world really and has always used her high profile for good things. And while we have always encouraged our children to magnify their talents we

also pointed out to them that it was not just about winning medals.” Marion also said winning the award had given Torah renewed energy to look at things she would like to do for and with others. “Torah has received a lot of good things in her life and now feels she would like to give something back.” Mrs Bright added. “She loves children and is looking at ways to do more in bringing them and others into her world to experience the thrill of the action sport world. She has more time now to allow other things into her life.” Congratulations Torah! Well done!

Great to see interest

the

postman calls

Congratulations to all those who won either local or national awards in the Australia Day festivities last week. Our community is home to a lot of community-minded people and they deserve the occasional pat on the back for all they do for our community, so well done, all. But Australia Day 2012 wasn’t without controversy. It never ceases to amaze The Postman how easily some people can be misled. Take for instance the “Cinderella” incident in Canberra. Some ‘staffer’ thought they’d make trouble for the Opposition leader by disseminating information to create a situation. But it all backfired and the PM herself was then in the firing line. What would have happened, one wonders, if instead of the PM just losing her shoe, one of those protestors had been carrying a gun? Political stunts, while puerile and irritating, are becoming part of Australia’s political scene, but where will it end? Hopefully not with Australia recording its first assassination of a politician. Really, its much more entertaining watching pollies commit political suicide just by opening their mouths. And here’s another question – why did people feel it necessary to throw fruit at Cooma’s Litter Pickers while they were going about their business on Saturday? Here’s another group of volunteers who benefit the community. They deserve praise not fruit salad.

Editor, Fantastic to see the interest people are taking in regard to the Central Business District of Cooma . I am proud to be the Mayor of the Cooma Monaro Shire and every chance I get, I ‘talk the town up’ because I truly believe that we all live in one of the best regions in Australia , but whilst I would always encourage debate on how things can be improved, it does disappoint me when some residents describe the town as ‘dead and dying’. I have been to many country towns throughout NSW and have spoken to many Mayors and as far as regional towns go we are quite often the envy of other towns due to our great location and having major employers in town such as Snowy Hydro, Monbeef, Smec, Dept of Defence ..... to name a few . We are definitely NOT dying . The future of the town should not just be driven by the Council as I believe we all have a part to play in how the Cooma Shire is perceived and how jobs are created, but to clarify what has gone on since this Council was elected I would point out that in the last few years Cooma has undergone some major projects such as the $1.5 million pool upgrade and the $1.2 million library redevelopment. These projects were prioritised ahead of the CBD which now has a budgeted $1.1 million for

CBD and Centennial Park upgrades over the next three years, with work costing $140k due to begin immediately on the Centennial Park toilets . The CBD Structure plan was adopted by Council around two years ago after widespread community consultation and now after Council endorsement, the concept plans will soon be ready for public comment (which I hope will again generate more community interest!). The only issue Council could be criticised for is waiting such a long time to start on the CBD upgrade, but I believe that the major projects delivered ahead of the CBD upgrade are worthy compensation for the wait. So again thank you to those that are contributing to the debate on how you would envisage Cooma to look and I would encourage everyone to follow through with this enthusiasm and make comment on these CBD Concept Plans through avenues such as the ‘new look’ Chamber of Commerce but please remember that ultimately the growth and look of our shire is the responsibility of us all. Dean Lynch Mayor, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council

Riposte Lisa Ashurst Hands up everyone who actually got out there in their community and did something on Australia Day. If you just stayed home but got everyone together for a family barbie then you may also raise a mitt, as this activity is also totally acceptable as an Australia Day thingy. If, on the other hand, you did absolutely nada then chances are you may be missing the whole point of this particular public holiday. Not that you’re expected to get all wild and woolly from sun-up to sunset but every community in Australia has some sort of ‘Do’ happening for a couple of hours on the day and is it really all that hard to take part? Nope. It’s a national holiday. It’s supposed to be a celebration of all things Aussie and it’s a top opportunity for friends, neighbours and community members to get together for a couple of snags, a brew or two and some Lamingtons with a cuppa afterwards. It can be fun actually. My local community took part in such Aussie gems as Toss the Tennis Ball into the Esky and Throw the Thong!

Kids teens and adults got into it and everyone was having a good time. Then everyone said bye to each other following the formal proceedings at the end and went home around mid to late morning to do their own thing and unwind. It was a really nice event. Now, if you wasted the holiday because you spent the day in bed or on the lounge recovering from the night before, you probably missed a chance to have fun and claiming you were just getting an early start by getting legless before midnight of January 25 doesn’t cut it either. Hung over types rarely manage to open an eye let alone jump out of bed before mid afternoon, by which time all the celebratory stuff is done and dusted for another year. If you had friends and/or family waiting on you so everyone could go and do something then you may have woken up to find yourself friendless and divorced. Or dead, depending on how upset they were and how good the plans were that got scuttled. Whatever, I think what I’m trying to say is that we have a pretty good deal here and the Country’s amazing and it’s definitely worth taking some time out one day a year to officially acknowledge it. Try to get it right next year!

Australia Day celebrations got underway in Bredbo with a good Aussie breakfast at the Community Hall at 8am followed by some entertaining games like the Tennis Ball into the Esky Toss and the always popular Thong Trowing Contest. The warm sunny weather was ideal for getting the Villagers together with everyone taking part in the activities in the Hall grounds. The formal part of the morning followed with a welcome from Jenny Lawlis, who introduced our Australia Day Ambassador, local Countegany farmer, Craig Mitchell, who talked about his family’s history and their arrival in Bredbo in the 1800s. Local bloke and bush poet, Frank Brennan, then read his entertaining poem “Aussies” before Mr Mitchell cut the official Australia Day Lamington cake.

New aerial spraying program In March 2012, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council, in its ongoing campaign to combat noxious weeds, will be coordinating another aerial spraying program targeting Serrated Tussock. During 2011, approximately 2000 hectares of dense Serrated Tussock was treated by helicopter throughout the northern part of the shire. Around 70 landholders were involved in the 2011 aerial spraying, with a large proportion of these requesting that Council continues to coordinate regular programs into the future. Landholders have reported that they have achieved particularly good results in areas of their properties where controlling Serrated Tussock would otherwise have been impractical or impossible. Landholders have also reported that the cost (approximately $85 per hectare including chemical and GST) makes it a very economical means of controlling Serrated Tussock infestations in difficult terrain. Through the help of local rural retailers, Council staff have assisted landholders involved in these

programs by obtaining chemical (Fluproponate) at a reduced rate, making the price of weed control far more affordable. Council’s Noxious Weeds Management Service staff provides a free coordination service during broadscale weed control programs such as aerial spraying. Onground mapping of infestations, cost estimation, chemical delivery and the coordination of on-ground operations are provided at no cost to the landholder. All that the landholder has to do is identify areas to be addressed, purchase the required quantity of chemical and pay for the helicopter once invoiced. Landholders do not necessarily need to be present on the day of spraying, though are encouraged to do so where possible to take a short helicopter flight over their property and ensure that target areas are positively identified. If you would like to be part of the upcoming aerial spray program targeting Serrated Tussock in March 2012, please contact Warren Schofield on (02) 6455 1943.

Cooma left behind on healthcare Member for Monaro John Barilaro has queried why the Federal Government’s district of workforce shortage (DWS) system has ranked Cooma as a lower priority than areas of Canberra in terms of healthcare need. DWS is the key mechanism that the Federal Government uses to equitably distribute medical services across Australia. “Urban areas such as Tuggeranong and Belconnen are currently being considered a higher priority by the Federal Government than Cooma,” Mr Barilaro said. The Cooma-Monaro Shire is not considered a district of workforce shortage despite considerable demand for medical services in the region. Areas considered a DWS receive priority attention from the Federal Government. Doctors who receive scholarships to study medicine under

Who can invest in Property? The fact is most people can invest in property and it can be much easier than you may think. But often people do not take action due to a lack of knowledge and fear. But with the right education – your knowledge will overcome your fear. Why? Education is power, sadly too many people jump in and invest without the knowledge and buy in the wrong location with the wrong model at the wrong time in the locations property cycle. Choose selected locations - Gone are the days that you can invest anywhere and get exponential and sustainable growth. But most people can afford to invest, especially right now. If you have an income of $40k plus and have usable equity in your home of approx $30k along with the Govt incentives you can get started with zero savings, and if you buy positive cash flow property it will not cost you anything per week to hold the property, you will actually increase your weekly income by up to $100 per week. When you invest in the right cities driven by Australiaʟs largest resource boom (that is not actually a boom as a boom implies a bust it is an exponential growth continuum that is not slowing down only ramping up and will for many decades), you will experience capital growth and enable you to duplicate sooner, and build a strong portfolio so you can secure yours and your familyʟs future. Nimmitabel Show 2012 SATURDAY 4TH FEBRUARY

Good quality sheep show

The Nimmitabel Show being the first of our local shows has become notorious for a good quality sheep show. Thanks to our valued sponsors we have over $2000 worth of prizes on offer at this year’s Nimmitabel Show Sheep section. We cater for March and August Shorn Stud Merino Sheep with separate classes. The Nimmitabel Show has always been very well supported by our local stud Merino breeders and we value their support and the high standard of exhibits with many of these sheep going onto the Canberra Royal, the Sydney Royal and the Bendigo Sheep Show, many achieving championships at these shows. MALCOM & PAM SHELLEY We appreciate the cost of preparing sheep for shows and how PH: 6452 2913 difficult it is. However due to the high cost of feed we would like to remind competitors we do have an unhoused section and would like to build it up. Last year’s show the Merino Flock ewes were well represented in numbers and quality and we hope we Congratulates all the Local can build up this section. Stud cattle section Yet another year is over and a new show season is upon us. As the stud cattle steward of the Nimmitabel show I would like to invite everyone from around the Monaro to come along and check out the top stud cattle on parade The stud judging will begin at 9.30am and the commercials will follow. Little shows find it hard to attract exhibitors and spectators so if you don’t have anything planned, come and have a look. This year again we hope to try and have a full stud and commerical cattle section for the public to view, and also many different breeds to see including, Herefords, Angus, Santa Gertrudis, Limousines, Murray Grey and maybe a few Shorthorns. We have recently completed an upgrade to the stud cattle area of the showground, including completing a new stud cattle shed to accommodate the growing numbers and modifications to the cattle yards.

If anyone wants more information please feel free to give us a ring on 6454 6245.

New Dalgety fire shed officially opened A large and happy crowd from Dalgety, Berridale, Jindabyne and surrounding districts attended the Australia Day opening of the Dalgety Rural Fire shed. Charlie Roberson, life member and the oldest living member of the Dalgety brigade, had the honour of officially opening the shed. Charlie declared the shed open by unveiling a plaque attached to one wall of the shed. NSW Rural Fire Service, Monaro Team, Operations Officer, Barry Aitchison said the Dalgety brigade was commenced in 1940. “In 1957 the brigade built a small shed in the Dalgety township. “In 1980 a second shed was built which was added onto in the 1990s.” Barry pointed out there had been major fires in the area in 1939, 1952, the 1990s and 2003, so there was definitely a need for a bigger shed to house fire fighting equipment. He paid tribute to past life members, Ossie Wellsmore, Pip Cogan, Kevin McMahon and Jack Walters. Captain of the brigade, Eric Corby said the old sheds were outdated. Research finds tea tree oil effective against Season ideal for spike in sheep fly strike and lice infestations barber’s pole worm laid on the wool for up to six weeks. “Tea-tree oil could be effective as a preventative treatment for wounds caused by mulesing, tail docking or any wound likely to be struck. It has also been shown to have antibacterial properties and is suggested to have wound healing effects,” Dr James said. “The appealing aspect of using tea tree oil as an insecticide is that it is a natural product. We are seeing more consumer demand for the use of naturally sourced products in food and fibre supply chains. “The use of many natural products on a commercial scale has often been hampered by its variable quality but tea tree oil is very well placed in this regard as its composition is specified under an international standard, ISO 4730. This ensures the supply of a consistent product, which is essential when using a product as an insecticide. “Getting the formulation exactly right is vital and it’s something that will require more research. Its not as simple as mixing tea tree oil with water and applying it to your sheep; its a complex and exact science. More research needs to be conducted before we can definitively say that tea tree oil is a viable treatment for fly strike and lice infestations however these initial findings are very encouraging.” The research findings are available in the RIRDC publication ‘Controlling fly strike and louse infections in sheep with tea tree oil’ which can be downloaded for free from www.rirdc.gov.au.

Livestock Health staff from the South East Livestock Health and Pest Authority are encouraging sheep and goat producers to put into practice drenching strategies to help prevent infestations of barber’s pole worm this worm season. Worm testing of local flocks across the tablelands and coast has shown rapid increases in egg counts. There have also been a number of producers reporting deaths from the parasite and for which small ruminants develop little resistance. South East LHPA district veterinarian, Ian Lugton, says conditions have been ideal for warmseason worms to proliferate over the early summer. “The rainfall we have recently experienced across the district has allowed many eggs to hatch and worm larvae on pastures to survive,” he said. “In a normal season we’d expect barber’s pole to be at its peak during the autumn. But, like last year, we’re expecting the peak to be much earlier in 2012. “Given current seasonal conditions

and the forecast, barber’s pole is shaping up to be a major disease issue for all sheep and goat producers.” Dr Lugton recommended producers take action now to prevent deaths and reduced flock productivity. “Administer a sustained action drench now or check burdens with faecal egg counting or the Haemonchus Dipstick dung test to see if barber’s ole worms are present. “If safe paddocks are available, run the stock there when the sustained action period is about to run out and follow up with further testing to ensure that drenching has been effective or to see if the worms are gaining in numbers again.” Dr Lugton reminded producers to use good drenching practices and dose to the heaviest animal in the mob. As there are many sheep drenches available, producers should also consider which drench will be most effective for their individual situation. For more information contact your local office of the South East LHPA.

The war against fly strike and lice infestations in sheep has taken a positive turn with new research showing that tea tree oil is very effective in treating both of the afflictions. The research, coordinated by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), found that tea tree oil was highly successful in both preventing lice infestations and killing blowfly maggot larvae. Dr Peter James from the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI), who was the study’s lead researcher, said the effect tea tree oil had on lice infestations was particularly encouraging. “Our lab trials showed that a 1 percent tea tree oil formulation reliably produced a 100 percent kill rate of lice and lice eggs, but we were very pleased to see that our pen trials generated the same results,” Dr James said. “We carefully inspected the two week shorn sheep at two, six, 12 and 20 weeks after being dipped in the 1 percent tea tree oil formulation and at all points no lice were found in the wool. “We also tested sheep with longer wool and the results showed that by jetting both 1 and 2 percent tea tree oil formulations louse numbers reduced by 94 percent in comparison to controls at two weeks after treatment.” The laboratory-based fly strike research used formulations consisting of 1 percent tea tree oil which reliably led to a 100 percent kill rate of first stage maggots. The research also demonstrated that tea tree oil had a strong repellent effect against adult flies, which prevented eggs being

Cooma swimmers organised by YMCA Group Manager Craig Lambeth was a great experience. First day session coach Scott Bradwell and swimmers Brad Lewis and Ryan Clay were on hand for a shortened but interesting session after they had been caught in a traffic jam. Second days major session at the Ian Thorp Aquatic Centre was conducted by head YMCA Coach Hamid Mobarrez and 2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier Joe Carty. The session included working on drills, styles, diving and under water stroke analysis which was exceptional. Both coach and swimmers impressed those present with their involvement with the swimmers. After this session the group walked through Darling Harbour, had a bus trip to Circular Quay and a ferry trip across to Manly where they spent time in the surf or sunbaking and enjoyed a lunch of fish and chips. Day three was off to the Cook and Phillip Park pool for another session with Hamid who once again put them through swimming and starting drills and stroke correction. The group returned to Cooma Friday afternoon tired and weary but certainly better for the experience. A big thanks goes to Craig Scott and Hamid, Brad, Ryan and Joe, to the adults who accompanied the swimmers and Bob for driving the bus.

on the Monaro

The local Pony Club riders who competed at the State Championships in Orange last month.

Six local riders from across the Monaro represented Zone 18 at the NSW PCA State Dressage Championships held in Orange on the weekend of January 20-22. Competitors arrived Thursday afternoon and were met with a severe hail storm and heavy rain that caused flash flooding at the showground and horse yards. Spectators watched as the showground swiftly turned into a small lake with a fast flowing river. Thankfully the water receded by the morning and the weekend progressed without incident. There were rain events on both Friday evening and Saturday however not like Thursday evening.

Dressage is a discipline where competitors must ride standard written tests from memory and are judged on their ability to perform in harmony with their horse. Riders competed across two separate dressage tests with the overall champion being determined by the collective placings. Riders from Zone 18 as always presented themselves and their horses impeccably but unfortunately missed out on the presentation trophy, but complimentary comments were received on our turn-out. All six riders rode with exceptional prowess with Chloe

Campbell (13-15years) finishing 20th in a group of 80 riders, Samantha Cassilles (15-17years) in 13th from 24, Taelar Williams (Assoc.) received a sixth place ribbon and finished eighth overall from a group of 40 riders. Kristen Whiting, Dannielle Kelley and Courtney Thompson also competed in the Associate age group and received personal best scores in the elementary tests. Thank you to all the parents and friends who assisted with the preparation and organisation which enables these very talented equestrians to travel and compete at such championships.
