Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre may be forced to close its doors only two months after the completion of significant renovations. Like many community organisations across Australia, the Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre receives its core funding from the Department of Social Services (DSS). The Centre is one of thousands of casualties in the Department’s overhaul of social services. Loss of the service, which was utilised by more than 2000 people in 2014, will have serious consequences for Snowy River Shire residents and visitors, including winter staff. Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, located across from Mitre 10 in the heart of Jindabyne, provides a range of services, many of which are unavailable elsewhere in the Snowy River Shire. Services and programs include: • Free WiFi/ Internet access • Low-cost printing and faxing • Referral to support services • Legal advice via Skype • Monaro Regional Library services including access to library materials, returns, and registration •Auspicing community organisations • New residents welcome kit • Jindy Jive for Under 5s • MAGIC in the Mountains • Snowy Seniors Connect • A cuppa and a chat The Centre also houses Jindabyne’s French Language Group, St. Vincent DePaul welfare support, and the Snowy Youth Council, and the Jindabyne chapter of Narcotics and Alcoholic Anonymous. Monaro Family Support Service, Campbell Page, and many others have used the Centre

B

to service clients in the Snowy River Shire over the years. While the loss of core funding is a major blow for the Centre, the Management Committee is not prepared to call it a day just yet. They are currently advocating to all levels of government for financial support, as well as appealing to the private sector. Management Committee Chair Neen Pendergast emphasised that “our Centre is an important place that brings people together and makes our community stronger. There’s a real need for the work we do, and it’s in the community’s best interest to support that work. Snowy River Shire Council and the Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce agree, with both parties using their networks to advocate on the Centre’s behalf. The Management Committee would also like to call upon the Snowy Mountains community for to advocate for and support the Centre in any way they can. Community members are invited to join Minister John Barilaro, Member for Monaro, tomorrow Wednesday February 4, from 11:30am for a “grand re-opening of the Centre. Light refreshments will be served, and everyone will have an opportunity to tour the Centre. The event will formally celebrate all that the Neighbourhood Centre has been and all that it might be.

Great result for Nimmitabel Show Snowy takes over Colongra Snowy Hydro’s purchase of the largest gas-fired power station in NSW, the Colongra Power Station, for $234 million, has been completed The purchase of Colongra from the NSW Government complements Snowy Hydro’s acquisition of Infratil’s Australian Energy Market Assets, including the retailer Lumo, last September. Snowy Hydro now owns and controls 1,287MW of gas-fired peaking power stations with Valley Power and Laverton North in Victoria and Colongra in NSW. These fast-response, opencycle gas plants are a perfect addition to Snowy Hydro’s portfolio of hydroelectric assets. Together they provide fuel diversification and transmission risk reduction benefits, in addition to their role in supporting Snowy Hydro’s risk management function in the National

Electricity Market. Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad said, “Colongra was a strategic move to build on our capabilities as the fourth pillar in the retail space. Colongra will play a key role in enabling Snowy Hydro to focus on growing our retail business in regional areas through our Red Energy Brand.” The acquisition of the Colongra Power Station will also help Snowy Hydro target new corporate and industrial customers. Mr Broad said, “We don’t have a big corporate book yet but we believe with our recent acquisitions we can manage large peak loads and be very competitive in that market. This is an exciting time of growth for Snowy Hydro and we believe will be another very important chapter in Snowy Hydro’s remarkable and iconic history.”

Pictured at the opening of Nimmitabel Show are RAS president Robert Ryan OAM, 2014 showgirl Jenny O’Ryan, 2015 showgirl Katherine Miners and John Barilaro. The 113th Nimmitabel Show was a huge success, despite a cold start there was a constant flow of people through the gate with a positive outcome. The gate takings were up $3000 on last year’s proceeds. Having a lot of attractions for the children appears to have paid off with many families in attendance. The ring events were a great success despite the record rain events, we are very fortunate the showground is very well drained. All Pavilion entries were exceptional and some stewards reported the best in a decade. This year’s stud cattle entries were the biggest

we have ever had. The commercial cattle were magnificent reflecting the wonderful seasonal conditions. Stud sheep entries were exceptionally good as usual. A lot of these sheep go on to Canberra and Sydney Royals and excel. Angora goats were very well represented with a large number of entries. Show Shearing was sensational drawing a big crowd. Thanks to the extended shed everything ran smoothly. The yard dogs had a very busy day with more than 40 entries. The Stockman’s Challenge proved to be popular, this being a maiden event. Another

popular attraction is the chainsaw races. After the ring events were finished the fun began with the post ripping with chainsaw and wedges, Then the dog highjump as well as the finale being the mates race. Each and every section must be congratulated as everything ran smoothly whilst retaining a relaxed atmosphere. I would like to thank all the stewards for their dedication and to all the exhibitors, because without your support there wouldn’t be a show, and furthermore to all our valued sponsors, especially our

Councils prepare for possible merger Snowy River Shire Council (SRSC) has hit the ground running in 2015, holding their first Extraordinary Meeting of Council for the year on Friday January 23. At the meeting Council formally decided that two business cases will be prepared in line with the State Governments ‘Fit for the Future’ program. These being a business case for SRSC to remain stand alone, as well as a business case for the proposed merger option between Bombala, Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River Shire Councils. “Council has been working for some months on preparing evidence that demonstrates it is Fit for the Future (FFTF), however we are also obligated to consider merging as recommended by the independent panel, explained General Manager, Joseph Vescio. An additional outcome from the meeting was that Council agreed that much of the work to be undertaken in the next six months will be useful for any future IPART application with the timing for a proposed rate increase being re-considered later in the year. Mr Vescio added “This will now allow us to focus on these two very important projects individually. The IPART submission will be re-visited in July 2015 after the FFTF business cases have been completed and submitted. Whatever the outcome, IPART consultation with the community will be required as a rate increase proposal will be a necessary step to becoming ‘Fit for the Future’ whether our Council remains stand alone or is merged. Council has formed a working party including two Councillors. This team will ensure that Council is in the best position to fulfil the requirements of Snowy River’s FFTF submission. Regular updates will be provided to the community as this process progresses.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council also held a special meeting of council last week, at which it resolved that Council: 1. agree to appoint a technical support consultant to investigate and fund the business case for a proposed merger option between Snowy River Shire Council, Bombala Council and Cooma-Monaro Shire Council; 2. agree to contribute one third of the 50% share of the costs covered by Councils in this joint process of developing a Merger business case; 3. agree to use the governance structure of the High Plains Executive and Implementation Group of the three Councils to manage the proposed option for a Merger business case; 4. agree to engage an independent consultant if it wants to progress an alternative option to merging. An appropriate scope document and pricing to be submitted for council consideration prior to any commissioning; 5. endorse the workshop outcome for the three partnering Mayors of the adjoining Councils to make appropriate representations to the Minister for Local Government relating to concerns with the time frame and other matters of costs. 6. directs the General Manager to undertake an appropriate professional co-ordination role and an overarching function in ensuring that Council is provided with timely, accurate and relevant information to enable informed decision making. 7. directs the Mayor to invite the Minister for Local Government and the Member for Monaro to Cooma to discuss Council’s concerns regarding timing and resourcing for the Fit for the Future program.

Money for ski patrols

From P1 Each year Clubs within the Far South Coast and Southern Tablelands raise money for charities throughout the region at their Quarterly Meetings. The money was raised by Club Managers and Directors (most of whom are volunteers) and Industry Representatives with half of the funds being donated by ClubsNSW. Throughout 2014 a total of $7,000 was raised for the Thredbo Volunteer Ski Patrol and the Perisher Volunteer Ski Patrol which were nominated by the Cooma Ex-Services Club. It is with great pleasure that the Cooma Ex-Services Club presented the cheques, on behalf of all Clubs within the region and ClubsNSW, to the Volunteer Ski Patrols. The funds will no doubt be of great benefit and will assist providing

essential services for our region. Vice president of Thredbo Ski Patrol Association Lucinda Fairrie said the association was “thrilled, absolutely thrilled with the unexpected donations. She said that Thredbo Ski patrol relies on donations for its day to day operation. This money will be used to buy more on-mountain equipment, such as akjas (sleds for transporting people), skidoos, bandages and other first aid equipment. Ms Fairrie said “Most our income is from donations with small portion from subscriptions. “We have 65 volunteers, enjoy generous support from all Thredbo guests. “We work closely with 25 professional ski patrollers at Thredbo, she said

All over the world the summer back to school time is the peak season for head lice; they love warm humid weather and large gatherings of school aged children in close contact with one and other. Head lice do not hop, jump or fly and can only be transmitted from one person to another by either close head to head contact (95% of lice are transmitted in this way), or by the sharing of objects such as combs or brushes, hats, coats, furniture cushions, head rests or bed pillows. So, as well as using a treatment to kill the lice and their eggs, it is essential to break the cycle by taking steps against reinfestation by making sure that any contacts are also treated. The first indication of head lice is usually itching and scratching caused by the bloodsucking habits of the louse, they can live for up to 48 hours without feeding on human blood. Examination of the hair and scalp will reveal white or

Hooks

grayish crawling forms (about the size of a sesame seed but with six legs) and yellowish white eggs attached to the hair shafts close to the scalp. The eggs are sometimes mistaken for dandruff, or residues of shampoo, that will not wash off. Red bite marks or scratch marks are often seen on the back of the neck. There are a number of other reasons for itching and scratching, of which dry air alone can be a culprit, and so ideally, the lice need to be identified. Lice eat several times a day, injecting irritating saliva into the wound to prevent coagulation. Scratching the scalp can result in infections. As it typically takes several weeks exposure to the lice before an allergy to the bites develops, itching is a sign that the infestation has been present for a month or more, or that the person has already developed an allergy because they have been infested before. So, a lack of itching does not necessarily mean that the person is not infested.

Neighbourhood Centre Re-Opening and Concerns for Future Funding

The newly refurbished Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre will officially re-open at 11:30am on Wednesday 4 February 2015. Minister John Barilaro, who assisted with the provision of funding for the refurbishment through the Community Building Partnership, will be onsite to cut the ribbon and welcome the community back to their Centre. The event comes at a difficult time for the Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, whose future is uncertain due to the loss of core federal funding through the Department of Social Services. The current funding agreement expires on 28 February; beyond that date the future of the Centre is unclear.

New maps to better identify doctor shortages Rural, regional and remote communities will find it easier to attract GPs following the Australian Government’s announcement of new maps to better identify doctor shortages. Launching the new District of Workforce Shortage (DWS) maps today, the Assistant Minister for Health, Senator Fiona Nash, said the new maps would more accurately identify where doctor shortages exist

so that recruitment of new doctors can be better targeted. “Rural doctors have told me the old DWS map system was no longer accurate and was in desperate need of an overhaul,” Minister Nash said. “We’ve heard the concerns of rural communities and we’re taking action. Our new system more accurately identifies communities where doctor shortages exist and better supports the recruitment of

new doctors to areas in need. “The new map system has been developed in consultation with doctors and regional communities, and is updated with the latest population and Medicare data. Previously, 2004 data had been used. “The new maps are an important step in delivering on this Government’s commitment to improve health outcomes for rural, regional and remote Australians through better

access to medical services. “Communities where doctor numbers have not kept pace with population growth will now be recognised in the updated DWS system. “This means, for example, that communities such as Gladstone (QLD), Mandurah (WA), Manilla (NSW), Emerald (VIC), Koo Wee Rup (VIC) and Murray Bridge (SA) will become DWS areas and will now find it easier to attract doctors.”

Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is a vital and growing part of our community, supporting thousands of residents, winter staff, and visitors. There are no other Shire-based services offering the types of social and support services that the Centre offers. Council recognises the importance of the Centre to the community. We are doing all we can to advocate on behalf of and encourage support for the Centre from our Local, State and Federal Members as well as the responsible Minister. Council encourages all residents to attend today's opening to learn more about the Centre; and to write to or ring their State and Federal representatives to advocate on behalf of our community.

Sen. Bridget McKenzie visits CUC Mini tornado in Bombala

Victorian Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie visited the Cooma University Centre last week as part of a tour of regional university services. Senator McKenzie, who is Chair of the Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee, had a meeting with the University Centre’s board and viewed the centre’s facilities. Pictured, Senator McKenzie with CUC board members.

Bombala residents reported a mini tornado which hit town last week, causing damage to some buildings. The Monaro Post was able to find a photograph of the phenomenon. No injuries were reported as a result of the intense storm cell. Photo courtesy of Brittanee Neven.

Monaro newsagents protected as deal struck with Tatts Group

www.monaropost.com.au

The Member for Monaro & Minister for Small Business John Barilaro said the interests of small businesses have been secured, following the NSW Government’s agreement to ensure newsagents remain the major outlets for lottery sales. Mr Barilaro, who was instrumental in securing a better outcome for newsagencies, joined with NSW Treasurer Andrew Constance today to announce the deal brokered between the Tatts Group and the NSW Government. A Memorandum of Understanding between Tatts Group and the NSW Government ensures newsagents remain the main outlets for lottery sales while a deal on a franchise agreement between the parties can be reached. Under the agreement signed today: • Tatts Group will undertake not to expand the network of franchises into supermarket chains for 3 years from April 2015 to April 1 2018; • The NSW Government will provide support to the existing network of franchises to update their point of sale shop fitting to the standard required by Tatts under the franchise agreement. “Let’s be clear – the reason we are having

this conversation is that Labor struck a dud deal and this is their legacy; it was the Liberals & Nationals who fought for a longer protection period,” said Mr Barilaro. “It’s imperative that we fight for those small businesses, those mums and dads that own newsagencies across the Monaro and across the state, to make sure they have a long term future.” The NSW Government will introduce a dedicated $15 million Newsagents Assistance Fund, allowing agents access to up to $10,000 for approved shop fit-outs. “Concerns were raised about the viability of small newsagents to undertake major shop re-fits that would have been a burden to operators under Labor’s dodgy sale contract,” said Mr Barilaro. “We’ve been working methodically with newsagents, the Tatts Group and local operators on the ground to reach a sensible outcome that supports small business while protecting taxpayers from the

risk of compensation.” The NSW Government is also offering free business advice and planning sessions for all lottery agents via the Small Biz Connect Program. “This package gives newsagents a further three years to help grow and strengthen their

businesses,” said Mr Barilaro. “The Tatts Group has always indicated to me they have no intention of going into Coles and Woolworths, and this MOU is a sign of good faith to address agent concerns,” Treasurer Constance said.

Firefighters in Monaro to receive hi-tech helmets Fire & Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) 6,800 fire officers will soon be wearing cuttingedge firefighting helmets with in-built radio technology and lighting that will provide greater protection and clearer communications at emergencies. Member for Monaro John Barilaro

said the new helmets would enable local firefighters to clearly communicate with each other while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus. “The NSW Government is committed to providing our firefighters with state of the art equipment to enhance their capabilities while working in highly dangerous conditions, Mr Barilaro said. “The new helmets provide firefighters with greater protection from the elements, as well as offering lighting and adjustable eye protection. “This $7 million dollar investment is proof of the great importance that the NSW Government places on supporting our courageous firefighters, Mr Barilaro concluded. The tender, one of the largest of its type in the world, has been awarded to MSA Australia. Fire & Rescue Commissioner Greg

Mullins welcomed the announcement. “An extensive process was undertaken to identify the best product on the market and we know that we’ve achieved a great result, Commissioner Mullins said. “Fire officers have to deal with lifethreatening situations on a daily basis, and they deserve the best protection money can buy. “The new ‘jet style’ helmets look quite different, and the level of protection they provide is a generation above the current style of helmet which we first adopted

back in 1993. “The in-built radio communications equipment means that it will be easier for officers to hear each other at emergency scenes and to communicate about complex firefighting and rescue operations – this can quite literally mean the difference between life and death. The roll-out of the new helmets will commence in March, with the majority of FRNSW’s 6800 fire officers to receive their new helmets by the end of June.

At the timing of writing Council still has not received the template for the Rural Council model. We have undertaken a facilitated workshop with CoomaMonaro and Snowy River Councils and are pursuing researching that merger option as well as the stand alone and Rural Council options. It is of concern and extremely disappointing that the State Government expects us to adhere to a very strict timeline and respond by 30 June 2015 when they have yet to release the details on one of the models they require Bombala Council to consider. We are however progressing the information gathering process which will assist us in completing the required paperwork for any Council submission on this matter.

Monaro Merino Muster This Saturday will see the third Monaro Merino Muster at Jindabyne Equestrian Resort. The muster is being run in conjunction with the NSW Yard Dogs championships, combining two elements of sheep and wool production. Organised by the Monaro Merino Breeders, the muster will showcase Monaro Merino genetics from the Snowies to the sea. The day will include competitions for both stud and commercial sheep, trade stalls, demonstrations, food and refreshments. Trade stalls will also be set up around JER and will include chemicals and products.

Council is very keen to hear from community members regarding the offer by the Boco Rock Wind Farm developers of a blade to display. It is thought that the static display of the blade would be a good attraction for the area and help to educate both locals and visitors on renewable energy. The display will be very large, some 49 metres long and over 2 metres high, which does limit the locations available to place it as a display. Council has identified two potential sites – one at the rear of the community gardens on the Railway land and the other on the grassy verge in front of the Caravan Park at Bombala. However if Council receives other suggested locations they will also be considered. Council would like community input on: 1. What are your thoughts on placing this display in Bombala? 2. What is your preferred location for this display? Council needs to make a final decision at the meeting to be held on 18 February so submissions must reach Council by 5pm on Wednesday 11 February 2015.

BOMBALA COUNCIL GENERAL MANAGER:

Competitors will start arriving on Friday February 6 to the Jindabyne Equestrian Resort to compete in the New South Wales Yard Dog Championship. This event held over Saturday and Sunday will commence at 7:30am Saturday and run throughout both days. Two trial courses will be set-up on the indoor arena which offers spectators and competitors the undercover shelter and hospitality of this venue. Trial organisers have accepted entries from 50 competitors who will bring 160 working dogs to compete in the various classes of competition, with one handler and their dog being crowned the 2015 NSW Champion. For those of you who are interested in how yard dog trialling has evolved in NSW, these results of the last few years will show who has been in the winning circle over this period, with very few from the early days still competing. NSW Championships began in 1984. Bob was passionate about children participating in sport, so he crammed as many children as possible into the police van and took them to Cooma to play sport, usually rugby league. Bob and Jan were equally communityminded, always to the fore in many fundraising events. Bob’s involvement in sport included being Captain/Coach of Newtown and Eden Monaro rugby league teams in the early 1960s. A dedicated police officer with a good sense of humour, Bob left behind him a legacy of Nimmitabel anecdotes. Like the night the noise of a buck’s party in Nimmitabel required investigation. Bob found the party-goers in the main street, with the soon-to-be-groom chained to a power pole, naked. “Oh, it’s only you (name withheld to save his modesty). Good night then. Or the time Bob pulled up a vehicle with a just-married couple off on their honeymoon and offered to lock them up for the night. The offer was refused. Roseanne Waters (Murphy) attended Bob’s funeral in Bathurst. She reported he was eulogised in an honourable fashion and it was fitting he was afforded a police funeral. Bob was 77. He is survived by Jan, Bradley and Sharlene, Tracey and Gavin, grand children Tarra, Brittany, Shaye, Taihla, Shauni, Brayden and six beautiful great grandchildren.

Nimmitabel residents were saddened to hear of the death of popular former policeman, Bob Warren, On November 28 last year. Bob was a larger than life character of the town nearly 50 years ago. Bob and his wife Jan and their children Bradley and Tracy lived in the police residence in the late 60s and early 1970. An affable, community- minded man, Bob was liked by all who knew him. He was a founding member of the Nimmitabel Lions Club and remained a committed and energetic member during his time in Nimmitabel. He was the first person to make the Nimmitabel community aware of the absolute necessity of swimming lessons for all children.’ Bernie Buckley used to lend Bob his stock crate and Bob would put crude seating it the crate and take as many kids as possible to the Kydra and give them swimming lessons. Leonie Thisteleton and Roseanne Murphy have fond memories of the venture.

Recently Australia lost a legendary author – Colleen McCullough. Colleen was born in 1937 in Wellington NSW and, later in life, moved to Norfolk Island where she did most of her writing. She was the author of over 20 books written between 1974 and 2013. Her well loved titles include The Thorn Birds which was made into one of the most watched television mini-series of all time starring Richard Chamberlin and Rachel Ward. For her Masters of Rome series, which consists of 7 titles, she was awarded a Doctor of Letters degree by Macquarie University because of the depth of her historical research. Here at Dorothy Dickens Books and Music I have a number of Colleen’s books. So come on in, pick up a bargain, and try a new Australian author. You can drop in or call, email or find us on FaceBook.

WATER & SEWER MAINS REHABILITATION PROJECT - JINDABYNE Council wishes to inform all customers in Jindabyne that the water and sewer mains rehabilitation project will commence this week. This project forms part of the annual mains replacement program which has been drawn up for the asset renewal program. This year, Council has programmed to replace water mains in Snowy River Avenue and sewer mains in Clyde Street, Snowy River Avenue, Kalkite Street, Kurrajong Street, Bent Street, Bogong Street and Jindabyne Holiday Park. The priority for replacement is based on the frequency of water mains breaks and sewer chokes resulting in service interruptions over the last couple of years. Residents will be informed well in advance of the planned interruptions to the water supply and sewer systems in their area throughout the project. Council will endeavour to minimise the interruption and also ensure residents are advised on the progress and completion of the project. Snowy River Shire Council apologises for any inconvenience that may arise during the project period. For maps showing proposed water and sewer mains replacement areas and material stock pile areas during construction please see our website: www.snowyriver.nsw.gov.au/Council/News_Media_Releases/Media_Releases/Water_Sewer_Mains_Rehabilitation_Project_-_Jindabyne: For any enquiries, please contact Council on 6451 1195 or email records@snowyriver.nsw.gov.au.

Perisher donates uniforms to countries in need Perisher has recently donated around 600 jackets and another 600 fleeces for distribution overseas to countries such as Chile, Tanzania, South Africa, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Nepal. To keep Perisher’s 400 Snowsports School Instructors in the latest gear, Perisher regularly replaces their uniforms. Perisher CEO Peter Brulisauer said, “This is a great initiative that helps keep the old uniforms out of landfill and provide support to those in need”. Perisher’s donation has been an operation many years in the making. Meredith Corney, Perisher’s HR Advisor said, “It’s wonderful to have an organisation, Pambula

Rotary, deliver the clothing to people in countries that need warmth and protection in a high altitude climate”. Some of the items had barely been worn, with changing logos and sponsorships requiring updated uniforms. A small mountain village in Nepal where a shipment of these jackets ended up was very thankful to Perisher, Pambula Rotary and the charity Pebbles for Nepal for the joint effort in sending the much needed clothing. Thanks to Jenny Stewart from Pebbles for Nepal for supplying the beautiful images of the jackets being delivered in Nepal.

Zone judging finals at Nimmitabel

Nimmitabel show on Saturday saw a good turn out of enthusiastic competitors for the Zone Finals of the Judging Competitions. The competitors ranged from 12 years of age to 17 years of age. A majority of the competitors tried their hand in all five sections, and most went home with ribbons. The day started with the Merino Fleece Judging with the Overjudge being Robert Ryan President of the RAS. After an hour of the competitors closely judging the fleeces and giving their oral presentations, Mae Walker was announced as the winner, with James Groves in second position Edward Thomas in third position and Amos Walker in fourth place. Encouragement award went to James Groves. The Judging of the Meat sheep with Overjudge Michelle Suthern. This was the hardest class for the competitors as the sheep were almost even. After much determination James Groves came out on top, followed by Mae Walker then Amos Walker in third place and fourth place went to Laurence Walker. Encouragement award went to Laurence Walker. The section Merino Sheep judging with Brett Povey as Overjudge, the winner was Mae Walker with Chris Shingles second, Amos Walker third and James Groves fourth. Encouragement award went to James Groves. The Cattle Judging Competition was then carried out with the Overjudge Warren Salway, which saw the biggest turn out of all the sections. Tailem Brown was announced the winner with Dylon Reid closely in second place and Alicia Bates in third, with Laurence Walker in fourth place. Encouragement award went to Sarah Alderton. Cattle Paraders with the alliance of the Over judge Warren Salway in which Tailem Brown took out first place, closely followed by Sarah Alderton in second place and Dakota Hine in third place and Dylan Reid in 4th place. Encouragement award went to Sam Hodge. Maryanne Burns then began the presentations with our two ASC representatives Clare Trevanion and Ray Sawtell presenting the ribbons and trophies with Mae Walker announced as the overall winner and received the Emily Alcock Memorial Perpetual trophy presented by Jenny Alcock. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the overjudges Robert Ryan, Brett Povey, Michelle Suthern and Warren Salway. They did an outstanding job and are to be congratulated on the advice they gave the competitors. We would also like to wish Mae Walker, Laurence Walker, Sarah Alderton, Dakota Hine and Tailem Brown the best of luck when they represent our Zone at the Sydney Royal Easter show in April for the State Finals of the Judging Competitions. Also the National finals of the Judging Competitions will be held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year. POST & RAIL

Wednesday February 4, 2015

the

postman calls

It was with pleasant surprise that The Postman woke to news of Peter Greste’s release on Monday morning. The plight of Greste, imprisoned for 400 days at the whim of Egyptian authorities, has been overshadowed by domestic affairs in weeks of late and so the announcement came as somewhat of a surprise. Nevertheless, the jubilation at his release must not overshadow the plight of his two Al Jazeera colleagues, who remain imprisoned for doing nothing more than carrying out their professional duties, and working for a news agency which has managed to attract the ire of the el-Sisi ‘regime’. Perhaps it is also a time to reflect on the relatively good fortune of journalists working in this country, and the threat so called anti-terrorism legislation, formulated on the run and enabled by populist fearmongering, may pose to this. Congratulations to the Nimmitabel Show Society for another great show last Saturday. It might have started out a tad on the cool side, but things warmed up. In any case,we were at “Nimmitabel, on Monaro” so packing the gloves and oilskin is always a wise move. This weekend sees another full card with the annual Cooma rodeo, the NSW Yard Dog Trials at JER and the Monaro Merino Muster. Enjoy!

Co-operate, don’t merge Editor, Save our Towns and Villages, sustain the communities that are left until our population drain is reversed. Ever since the ‘Age of Mechanisation’ dawned people have had to leave the country to be employed in the city skyscrapers. Now a new age is about to ‘Dawn’ the “Age of Super Communications’ and the population drain can soon be reversed. The most critical things

will be to have attractive towns and villages with good water supplies and for the Commonwealth Government to provide us with ‘Broad Band Internet Coverage’ that will meet future demand. Council amalgamations (centralisation) should be off the agenda but Council co-operations very much on the agenda to achieve this end. Geoff Bowland Cooma

Riposte Lisa Ashurst So now there’s a new phone app where parents can lock up their kids’ mobile phones when the little treasures won’t answer if they see it’s a parent calling...nor return calls or respond to texts no matter how urgent it appears to be. Well what a great idea this is and I wish the technology had been available when mine were going through that phase! Not that they ignored me all that often but there were those times and it really drove me crackers. This clever app means that in order to get their phones operational again they actually have to call the parent they’ve been ignoring and how wonderfully sweet is that? I think we’ve all been there at some stage in our kids’ lives and it’s downright frustrating when you are trying to find out where they are, why they were not on the school bus one afternoon or how come the school friend they told you they were spending the weekend with just happens to call the home phone to say hi which tells you they are not where they claimed they would be? Whichever, you spend the rest of the afternoon and well into the evening calling them and they just won’t pick up and you are bursting with the desire to scream blue murder at them but can’t because you can’t touch base. You just end up wanting to throttle the little so-and-so’s, yeah? Of

DESIGN & PRODUCTION Jessica Plumridge course you do! Anyway, whoever developed this app probably has kids of their own who are going through the ignoring calls and texts from parents phase and are as heartily sick of it as the rest of us have been and let me tell you, they have won my total respect for being clever enough to develop such an awesome form of payback. I mean, just picture your child suddenly discovering that he/she is unable to call or text their friends to complain about you calling and/or texting them, only to discover the only way they can proceed is to finally call you back if they ever want to be able to whine about you via their phones ever again! Oh my god, I just love it! The thing that kids don’t seem to get is that if a parent calls them, there is usually a Very Good Reason and therefore it makes good sense to take the call! On that same note however, what they do most definitely get is that the parent trying to contact them will come close to blowing a gasket when the silence stretches on and on. It’s a kind of power thing for them, I guess, but they have had that particular power just a little too long in my opinion. And now parents can fight back and I would suggest ignoring their offspring’s frantic attempts to finally make contact. Give the little cusses a taste of their own medicine, huh? I just love it!

RATE DROP?

NEW LISTING

$335,000

There is current sentiment that interest rates are likely to drop at the next meeting of the Reserve Bank, and possibly further in the future. What does that mean for you? Is now the time to fix your home loan, or do you wait for hopefully lower rates to come? There is no easy answer, as everyone’s circumstance is different. I am happy to explain the implications of fixing rates, and give clients a comparison. I don’t have a crystal ball to be able to tell people what the future holds with interest rates, but can help them by knowing what things they need to consider. It can also be a good time to get into the investment property market. Interest rates are low. Banks have some great special offers on. If you have other financial needs, more suited to a financial adviser, I can arrange an appointment with an experienced financial adviser, Damian Toms, who can provide specialist advice. For a free appointment to discuss your existing home loan, or future loan needs, please call me on my mobile 0431 351 873.

Fisherfolk need patience and cunning this season Fisherfolk after a trout from the Snowy Mountains waterways need patience this year. They also need to be up very early or out fishing very late. Col Sinclair of the Adaminaby Angler, said perfect environmental conditions have made fishing challenging this season. “The fish are too fat he said. With an over-abundance of their natural food, the trout in Lake Eucumbene are playing hard to get. He said with so much food and so much water, the fish are in their element. n top of this, they are being a bit fussy about what they want to eat. However, fishermen are still landing trout. Col recommends getting out early

to fish. Bait fishing is still best with mudeyes or worms. Fly fishing has been very challenging, but once again, early or late is best, or walking the shoreline to spot a fish. Trolling is also best at first light for two or three hours or on dusk. The middle of the day has not been very successful. But with all the frustration of not catching an easy dinner, Col said the signs for the future are very good, with lots of small fish in the rivers and streams and these will eventually end up in the lake for future fishing excursion.

Pictured, a fine Lake Eucumbene brown trout caught by one of Col’s customers.

Meet the crew at High Country Automotive Cam Mackintosh

His role: Finance lending and insurance for new and used cars How long has he worked at HCAG: 19 months He drives: Subaru Forester

His hobbies: Skateboarding, football (soccer), guitar and basketball.

Cam was born in Cooma and spent all of his schooling years here, graduating from Monaro High School in 2010. Prior to working at High Country Automotive Group (HCAG), Cam worked at the St George Bank in Cooma, so he comes from a financial background. He likes working at HCAG not only because the staff are so friendly (and pretty funny if you ask him) but also because he likes the perks of being able to test drive a lot of the new vehicles. Cam says one of the best things about HCAG is the high quality car brands they stock, t Sales, Service AND all accessories boasting the highest market share in NSW for sales of Subaru, the people of Cooma t New AND Used / Buy or Rent seem to agree – the inclusions of Toyota, an always popular t Inks, Toners AND Paper choice in regional Australia and Hyundai, one of the fastest growing car brands in Australia, there are some great vehicles in the HCAG yard. In his rather brief time at HCAG Cam has been awarded employee of the month twice, he holds the top two records for the

CUA alarmed by lack of awareness on credit card interest rates Australia’s largest customer-owned financial institution has said it is worrying how many credit card holders were making purchases on their cards without any idea about the interest rate they are paying. CUA General Manager of Products and Marketing, Jason Murray, said the new research commissioned by the Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA) showed around half of the 1000 people surveyed ‘didn’t know’ what interest rate they were paying on their credit card. “This research shows that customers needed to do a lot more research before signing up for seemingly attractive credit card deals,” Mr Murray said. “There are more than 100 credit unions, building societies and mutual banks offering an alternative to the Big 4 Banks,” Mr Murray said. Despite this competition, Mr Murray said it was concerning that COBA’s research found as many as one in seven people aged from 1824 thought the Big 4 banks offered the best rates. “That is simply not the case. The big banks have huge marketing budgets to promote credit cards and the clever tactics are clearly working. “Choosing a credit card can be daunting – there are hundreds of different cards in the marketplace, with a range of different features and incentives. “Credit unions, building societies and mutual banks often offer much more competitive rates than the Big 4 and provide many of the same benefits – like complementary travel insurance, rewards points and introductory rates for balance transfers.”

In 2014, the 10 mutuals which partner with Citibank to offer a Low Rate MasterCard and Platinum MasterCard shared the Money Magazine award for Credit Card Issuer of the Year. The interest rate on CUA’s Low Rate Mastercard is 12.99% p.a. – that is at least 0.5% p.a. lower* than the interest rates being offered by any of the Big 4 on their Low Rate credit cards. New customers taking out a CUA Low Rate Mastercard can also receive an introductory rate of 1.9% p.a. on balance transfers. “I really can’t stress enough how important it is for people to look at the underlying interest rate when signing up for a credit card – initial promotional periods can fly by very quickly and if you haven’t paid off the balance, you’re suddenly paying a huge amount in interest,” Mr Murray said. The other thing people need to consider is whether they’d be better off swapping the credit card for a debit card. “The main advantage of a debit card is obviously that you are spending your own money,” he said. “But there can be other added conveniences of having a debit card. CUA customers with a VISA debit card can use our state-ofthe-art ‘tap and pay’ technology on their phone. CUA was the first institution in Australia to launch the redi2PAY app last year, which turns compatible Android phones into a mobile wallet, meaning you can leave the card at home.” * Based on personal credit card interest rates available on infochoice. com.au on 28 January 2015.

Thank you to our judge Aaron Granger of Rogara Stud Goulburn.

With these recent heavy rains over the Monaro in the past months St John’s Wort has been actively growing and easily identified by its yellow flower, now is the time for control of this invasive plant which is a class 4 Noxious Weed in the Cooma-Monaro Shire. St John’s Wort is a native of Europe, Asia and North America and is a weed in 21 countries. St John’s Wort was brought into Australia for its ornamental and medicinal properties in around 1875. It is now a serious weed on the tablelands and slopes of New South Wales. The Problem St John’s Wort is highly invasive, contains toxin hypericin which causes photosensitizations in sheep, cattle, horses and goats. St John’s Wort competes with useful plants and large infestations reduce property value. Identification St John’s Wort has a yellow flower with five petals that grow in dense clusters at the end of the branches, leaves and branches are always opposite at the stem. The fruit splits open on ripening in summer, to release seeds in the following autumn, seed can remain viable for 12 years. St John’s Wort has one set of roots that grow vertically to about one metre into the soil and another set that grow horizontally and produce buds that form new aerial growth. Dispersal St John’s Wort spreads by seeds and lateral roots, the sticky

seed capsules adhere to animals and it is spread over short and long distances by water, machinery, humans, livestock and feral animals. Control and Management The most costeffective and practical control techniques to use will depend on the scale of the St John’s Wort infestations and the topography of the infested land. All techniques should aim to remove the weed. Preventing the invasion of St John’s Wort is the cheapest and most effective way of controlling it. Learn to identify the weed and regularly check from October through to April. If found act immediately to remove it. Hand –weeding Hand weeding, either by pulling plants out by hand or digging plants out using a hoe or shovel, is not an effective method of controlling St John’s Wort. St John’s Wort can reproduce from buds produced on its roots; therefore, new plants will grow unless the entire root structure is removed.

COOMA RURAL RODEO

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 7 2015 ‡ STARTING AT 2PM www.coomarodeo.org.au

Rodeo Time!

Cooma Rodeo on February 7 should provide a full afternoon and evening of entertainment for all. This is the only rodeo scheduled for that weekend, so entries should be high and the competition fierce. Entries in the barrel racing should be good, as there has been a lot of interest and participation in recent barrel racing clinics held in Cooma. The rodeo association has also conducted steer riding clinics to provide the basic skills for competitors in those events. All proceeds from the rodeo will go towards completing the new arena.

Because the Cooma Rodeo Committee are keen to let locals compete in front of their home crowd, they are holding a special event aimed at all local stockmen. A highlight of the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, the Poley Buckjump is a chance for local competitors to step up to the plate and try their luck. With $500 prize money and lots of prestige on offer, some of the best rough riders in the district will be entered.

The Poley Buckjump is a unique event at the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo as it enables competitors to compete in the saddles they ride in every day; as long as it is either a stock or fender saddle. And of course extra points are always awarded if the competitor can crack a stock whip whilst the bronc is in full flight! Any local competitors who are interested in entering the Poley Buckjump must enter through Central Entries the week before the rodeo. For more information on how to do this, or anything else to do with the 2014 CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, visit the Rodeo Website www. coomarodeo.org.au.

Big fleet and big wind on Lake Jindabyne Yet another rainy afternoon greeted the sailors on Wednesday 28th January for heat eight of Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club’s 2014/15 Twilight Series. The sailors stood in the rain in a “circle of indecision while searching for signs of a bit of breeze on the lake. Finally four mono-hulls and three catamarans rigged up in the rain to take their chances on Lake Jindabyne. Others chose not to sail and remained on the shore. Ian Foster manned the start boat and sent the fleet off on a port rounding course. Nick Kennedy got a good start and led fellow Hobie 17 sailor Tim Symons and the rest of the fleet to the Quarry mark for the first time. Terry Lee and Russell slipped to the front of the mono-hull fleet on Terry’s 470 dinghy. The small fleet headed out to the Peninsular mark on a tactically tricky square run. The breeze steadily increased so that the two Hobie 17 sailors zoomed along while using their trapezes to good effect on the long Windward work to the Bay mark. Nick led Tim by a large margin until they reached the mark where Tim slipped in front. Martin Bannister sailed his Hobie 14 in company with Ross Tattersall on his Laser and Ross Lawley on his OK Dinghy. Victoria Incani sailed a club Laser and kept the boat up right in the strong breeze. She returned to the beach early after some useful sailing practice. The sailors all enjoyed the fresh conditions despite the cold. Ian shortened the course to three laps. Tim led the cats around the remainder of the course. He was followed by Nick and Martin. The cats kept this order after adjusting for this season’s handicaps. Terry led the mono hulls home followed by Ross T and Ross L. Ross T took the win on handicap corrected times followed by Terry and Ross L. All the sailors enjoyed the race and were glad they made the effort in the chilly conditions. Races Seven and eight of Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club’s Point score series were held on Saturday 31st January. Eight mono-hulls and seven catamarans rigged up to race. With no rain and a strong Southerly breeze, a port rounding course was set around Lion and Cub islands. Peter Baker volunteered to start the fleet from the clubhouse flagpole. He then left the sailors to record their finishing times themselves. Ian Foster led the fleet towards the channel marker at Church Rocks. He was followed by Tim Symons & Barry Dennis also on Hobie

17s and the rest of the fleet. They set off on a long square run to the Mountain mark which was very hard to find in the distance. Nick Kennedy returned to the beach just before the start to fix a rudder problem and had to catch the fleet and pass all the monohulls. New members Martin Bannister and Alistair Cross sailing 14 foot cats staged their own race within the race. The Laser sailors all battled with each other too. Victoria Incani sailed a club laser around the islands for the first time. She had to recover from a capsize near East Jindabyne with Kerry McGaw’s assistance and sailed back to the sailing club beach. The sailors completed a sausage leg at the end of the race, before returning to the beach to record their times. Though Ian led the fleet all the way around the big course, he kept sailing after the last mark rounding and Tim was the first cat back to the beach. The mixed fleet results were mixed up as several of the cat sailors followed Ian rather than finishing. Martin Van Weel won the race on yardstick corrected times. He was followed by Gote Vikstrom, Steve Osborne, Rob, Ross Tattersall, Tim, Terry Lee, Ian, Martin B, Alistair, Nick and Barry Dennis. Colin & Cooper de Pagter sailing their Hobie 16 and recovering from a capsize failed to finish the race along with Kerry McGaw. The wind picked up for the second race of the day. Steve Osborne and Victoria Incani manned the start boat & started the race from the Peninsular mark. Barry Dennis capsized his Hobie 17 before the start and was assisted by Steve and Victoria after they sent the fleet off into the 15 to 18 knot Southerly breeze. Barry then set off chasing the fleet after the exhausting and cold effort of righting his boat. After a good start Ian Foster lost his mast on his Hobie 17.

Nick Kennedy led the fleet and Tim Symons chased Nick. The fleet enjoyed another fast and testing race in the windy conditions. Steve and Victoria towed Ian back the sailing club beach and zoomed to the Bay mark to finish the race before the first of the cats arrived. Tim caught up to Nick on the second windward work leg, only to have Nick slip away on the third. Nick won the race on

yardstick corrected times. He was followed by Martin Van Weel, Gote, Tim, Kerry, Rob, Martin B, Terry, Ross, Colin and Barry.

District bowls interrupted Life guard patrols extended at Tathra Beach by weather

The weather played havoc with the district games last week. Firstly the pairs at Jindabyne on Wednesday was a none event because of rain, and secondly it was global warming in Nimmitabel on Thursday, a big 6 degrees just what we expect for the end of January I think not! Unfortunately after three rain delays games

were discontinued until next Thursday when the first round will be finished and the semi finals played on the same day. The second round of the pairs will be played in Jindabyne Wednesday, hopefully the weather will be warmer and kinder. All games will be 9 o’clock morning tea, play to commence at 9.30am. Good luck to all players.

A dedicated group of local businesses have bonded together to raise funds to extend the lifeguard patrolling service at Tathra Beach through to the end of February. Bega Valley Shire Council currently provide lifeguard services for eight beaches across the region from Boxing Day through to Australia Day, traditionally the peak period for holidaymakers in the region, but the new agreement means that Tathra Beach will now be patrolled 7 days a week throughout February. Rob White from Tathra Beach House Apartments has been one of the key drivers of the campaign and feels that the move will be a boon for the local tourism industry. “I’ve been in the tourism industry for twenty years, and come the first day of February there has never been a patrolled beach option for holidaymakers. February has the same water temperature as January, and very often better weather conditions,” Mr White said. “Although people have gone back to school there are still a lot of younger families, and retirees wanting to enjoy a beach holiday along the Sapphire Coast.” “We want to promote the region as a great beach holiday destination, and we

want people to have a safe time at the beach. “While it gives Tathra a point of difference at the moment, hopefully it will spread to the other beaches in the Sapphire Coast region, further enhancing the area’s reputation as a great holiday destination.” Local businesses Bega Valley Motors, Big 4 Tathra Beach, Tathra Beach Family Park, Tathra Beach House Apartments, and the Tathra Chamber of Commerce have all backed the campaign by donating significant funds to assist in the provision of the lifeguard service for an extra month. Additional funding from the Southern Phone Grants Scheme made up the difference and ensured this project would come to fruition. Australian Lifeguard Service Manager Brent Manieri said the arrangement will help promote beach safety in the region. “We’re delighted that the business community have bonded together to enable locals and tourists alike to swim at a patrolled beach throughout one of the busiest months of the year. “Lifeguards play an active role in keeping our beaches safe as they are well trained to deal with an array of emergency situations,” Mr Manieri said.

Cool ladies bowls Tuesday was the final of Club Triples and believe me it was no heat wave in Cooma for it, although the girls in the final felt their blood pressure rising in a few tense moments throughout the game. The final between D Russell, O Jebbink, C Meillon (skip) and M D’Amico, L Snell,M Zasso (skip) turned into a real cliff hanger right to the finish. Cheryl’s team team starting off to a threenil lead in the first two ends but Margherita’s picking up four in the next to go to a one point up. Then the game seesawed until end 11 when Margarita’s grabbed a 15-11 lead and was able to keep it with Cheryl’s team chipping away until the final end when scores were locked at 20 all. An extra end had to be played to determine the winner. It is a pity in a game like this there has

to be a loser and unfortunately for Cheryl, Olga and Dawn three points picked up by Margherita, Leonie and Maureen on that end gave them match and the Championship for 2015. Congratulations girls it was an excellent game played by all in true spirit of the game. The only other game was a social 4’s game on rink two. M Power, M Phillips, R Steinfort, D Jackson (skip) played J Locker, J Upton, M Obermaier, U Roberson (skip). There was no pressure in this game and all girls sounded like they really enjoyed it. Although Dot’s team got off to an 8-3 start and by end six at end 10 it was 8 all. Una’s team then took the lead until end 14 when Dot’s team picked up 10 shots over the last four ends to win 20 – 12. Good Luck to all the girls playing in the District Pairs and Triples this week.

Cooma ladies golf results On Wednesday January 28 the fourth round of The Sisters Trophy was played. The winner was Aileen Smith on a count back from Gaye Wilson both ladies scoring 15 points. Gaye was runner up. The first ball was won by Val Leitch with 14 points and the second ball was won by

Chris Brown wins Nimmitabel’s Jake Wynan a tennis star the Summer Cup Cooma Golf Report by a great 39 points from Bill Dyball with 35. Garry Atkinson It’s as good as it gets at Cooma Golf Course at the moment. With greens running true and even paced, fairways as good as the backyard lawn and warm, sunny days what more could a golfer ask for? Maybe some form perhaps but we’ll get to that‌ Golfers are asked to remember the Snowy Mountains Short Course Championships on February 14. This is one of the premier events on the golfing calendar this year with prizes on every hole – it’s a must play event. So what happened last week on the course‌ On Saturday January 31, 39 players hit off in round four of the Summer Cup. Chris Brown took out A grade amassing 35 points with Steve Young coming home also with 35 points. In B grade Steve Wheatley had the round of the day with a fabulous 40 points to easily take out B grade from John Onur with 36 points. The C grade trophy was won by Tony Monday with

Ball winners went down to 34 points. Brian Searl was the closest shot on the ninth for the nearest the pin prize. Does Brian ever not get a nearest the pin prize? Sunday saw another lovely day with 12 golfers playing an individual stableford as well as Yowani Golf Club here for round one of the B grade pennant competition. In the local event Georg Froeschl took out first place with a fabulous 43 points, Poor John Onur had a fine 41 points to run second (he’d win on any other day) but only gets a ball for his fine round). Ball winners went down to 34 points. Nearest the pins were close affairs with John Onur taking out the ninth hole and the ever improving Gary Batten nearest the pin on the 17th. Cooma won their round one pennant match with a 4 – 2 win so well done to the Cooma lads. On Wednesday the 28th 27 players competed in three grades for the top prizes with A grade being won by Norm Marshall with 37 points.

Nimmitabel resident, Jake Wynan has put together a breakout performance in Alabama, USA, advancing out of the qualifying draw and all the way to the quarterfinals of the main draw at the USA F30 Futures Event. Out of 152 professionals, Wynan finished in a tie for fifth place, putting him among the top 500 players in the world and will give him his first top-1500 ATP world ranking. It is the first time in program history a Ragin’ Cajun player has advanced to the quarterfinals of a futures event. “Overall, what a super week filled with positives for our program, Louisiana head coach Mark Jeffrey said after the tournament. “Jake proved that he can play with the best professionals in the world. Wynan advanced into the main draw with four straight victories in the qualifying draw. He knocked off Adam Rudowski (61, 7-6(4)) and Kenan Hadzic (6-2, 6-0) in the first two rounds, and Robin Haden (7-5, 6-0) of Mississippi State and Zvonimir Babic (36, 6-0, 6-4) to escape the qualifying draw and advance. He then opened up the main draw with a victory over seventhseeded Canadian Pavel Krainik (6-4, 6-0) in the first round,

a player ranked in the top 650 in the ATP rankings. Wynan followed that up with a win (6-3, 6-4) over fellow qualifier Donovan McSeveney of South Africa. But the run came to an end one round later in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to Jean-Yves Aubone. “This performance will help him believe that he can compete with any college player in the country, and will give him enormous confidence moving forward, Jeffrey said. “I hope the rest of our team takes note of Jake’s attitude and approach to the game, Jeffrey said. “He is improving every day after committing to his approach many months ago and it is paying dividends. In addition to Wynan’s stellar run, the Ragin’ Cajuns also had Damian Farinola advance three rounds deep and Edgar Lopez move into the

second round. Farinola picked up his first win of the event over Portugal’s Ricardo Jorge (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) before picking off Craig Klein in the second round (6-2, 6-4). He fell one round later to eventual draw winner Skander Mansouri of Tunisia (5-7, 6-3, 7-6(8)). Meanwhile, Lopez picked up his win over Canada’s Stewart Block (61, 7-5) before falling to Jonathan Ho (6-0, 6-1) in the second round. “This is a great way to end the fall and start building for the winter and spring, Jeffrey said. “Now we have four guys with ATP rankings and success in the past with ATP points. As a former ATP ranked player, this is the environment I worked hard to build. I can see it starting to unfold and I’m proud of the guys for buying in.

The Member for Monaro John Barilaro has formally opened the Thredbo Valley Track in Kosciuszko National Park. Built to comply with International Mountain Bicycling Association standards, Mr Barilaro said this track offers 17 kilometres of scenic riding or walking. “By investing $6 million in this impressive infrastructure, the NSW Government is increasing visitation to Kosciuszko National Park and enabling more people to enjoy the unique environment in the Snowy Mountains,” Mr Barilaro said. “Experienced mountain bikers praise the track, as do families with young children who have been riding it in droves these summer holidays.

“Bushwalkers and fishers are also enjoying the Thredbo Valley Track, as it provides a link between Thredbo Resort, Lake Crackenback Resort and the Ngarigo and Diggings camping areas. The five suspension bridges that cross the Thredbo River are an added attraction and provide viewing points to see platypus and trout. “The Kosciuszko National Park plan of management was recently amended to encourage the development of environmentally sensitive cycling infrastructure. The Thredbo Valley Track is an excellent example of how to achieve this.” Mr Barilaro, who officially opened the track on Saturday, said the Thredbo Valley Track compliments and links mountain

bike trails constructed within the Thredbo resort and the Lake Crackenback resort providing great opportunities for long and short rides and walks along the spectacular Thredbo Valley. “By providing more trails we are attracting more visitors and also lucrative events that inject tourism dollars into the local economy. And people who have a good experience at an event are more likely to return later for another visit,” Mr Barilaro said.
