Wind Prospect CWP is pleased to announce that construction of the first phase of the Boco Rock Wind Farm is set to commence in the third quarter of 2012. This final step in the projects development is the culmination of over five year’s work which commenced in 2007. “Stage one of the project comprises 66 turbines spread over 12 properties and encompasses the two western clusters, which are referred to as the Sherwins and Springfield clusters in the Development Application. A further seven properties will be spanned by the power line connecting the wind farm to the Essential Energy owned lines at Steeple Flat,” said Ed Mounsey, Wind Prospect CWP’s Head of Development. Details relating to
timing of construction activities will be disseminated in due course through the project website, local media and Council. “The company will issue a Community Information Plan prior to construction commencing and will be keeping the community up to date with developments”. In order to maximise benefits to local businesses the ‘contractors’ page of the project website (www. bocorockwindfarm.com.au) is still available for interested parties to register their details. “I again encourage all those parties that have already made contact with us to re-register their interest through our website to ensure we maintain accurate and up to date records”, Mr Mounsey concluded.
MHS students support MCCR Lisa Ashurst
Throughout 2011, Monaro High School’s Year 12 students (of that year) somehow managed to squeeze in extra time between their HSC studies to come up with some innovative ways to raise much-needed funds for the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research (MCCR). By organising a series of fun activities over the course of the whole year, such as barbecues, selling flowers on St Valentine’s Day, acting as waitresses at the rugby league fight night and auctioning themselves off as personal assistants to students and staff at the school, they managed to raise the tidy sum of $4000 for the committee. The cheque was presented to the vice

Zoe felt their fund raising efforts were very successful and is happy with the end result. “Everyone got behind it which was great, so it went really well!” Being very community focused, the students kept their activities within the Cooma area and were delighted with the support they received from the local community but even more so, with the amount they managed to raise for the MCCR. A fantastic effort!

Nimmitabel’s 109th annual show, held last Saturday was bigger and better in all areas, according to president John Harrington. After a damp week, Saturday dawned bright and sunny, encouraging an estimated extra 200 patrons to attend the show. Entries were up in the cattle, sheep and goat sections, while the ring entries were double last year. This year’s show was opened by ABC radio personality Ian Campbell, who spoke about the worth of the local show to the community – a celebration in good years, a show of strength in lean years. Mr Campbell was joined on the podium by the 2012 Nimmitabel Showgirl, Laura Clarke, who will contest the regional titles in

What’s cooking at The Lott? Lisa Ashurst Following news of the success of their application to the NSW Government Product Development Funding Initiative, submitted in October 2011, The Lott is busy with plating up some smart ideas for the local community via a series of educational workshops to encourage people and food to get together more creatively. The funding is available to tourism operators throughout the region including motels, tour companies, eateries and the like who must be able to show their plan will be sustainable and has a future. M a r k e t i n g Manager for The Lott, Caroline Fox, believed the expansion to The Lott’s premises last October offered a lot of potential to add something unique to the region’s tourism and so it became part of their application. “We have introduced a food education program where local producers can hold
information sessions and workshops for people who want to see and taste the foods and pick up some good ideas on how to use them at home.” Part of the expansion of the premises includes a domestic kitchen set-up which is currently under construction and the plan is to hold cooking classes, bring in professional chefs for demonstrations
and also to provide a local venue for the region’s producers to educate people on their products and the best ways to prepare and use them. “We wanted to provide a venue where producers and the community could connect” Ms fox added.
The idea is quite unique as there is nothing along these lines operating in the region and if the response to the children’s workshops conducted over the September/October school holidays is anything to go by, The Lott is looking at a very successful venture. “It went really well.” Ms Fox said. “The kids made cupcakes and also planted out their own little herb gardens which they were able to take home with them. We’ve been very happy with the response and the workshops are going to be a regular thing.” There are also plans for small groups to get together for fun culinary activities like Show and Tell, sharing old and favourite recipes and even some food trivia! If you would like more information please telephone The Lott on 6452 1414 or go online to www.lott.com.au for regular updates. The website is currently being put together and people will be able to access it shortly.

Woollies supporting the MCCR
John Sidery and Dulcie Thistleton cooking up sausages for the fundraiser at Woolies.
Lisa Ashurst Dulcie Thistleton and Jon Sidery of Woolworths, Cooma, were tossing plenty of sausages on the barbie at lunchtime on Wednesday 25 January, but it was all for a good cause. Woolies was hosting a cake stall and barbecue at the entrance to the store as a fundraiser for the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research (MCCR)
and every $2 sausage sandwich sold raised $4 for the MCCR as Woolworths generously matched dollar for dollar on the sales. Staff members were also asked to either make, bake or buy a cake for the cake stall, tempting shoppers with a variety of treats to take home and with the money raised from cake sales added to that from the barbie, the MCCR received a welcome boost for their research funds.

Well, that was a little ripper of a show. Nimmitabel Show Society should be proud of their annual event last Saturday – more people, more exhibits, more of everything, really. And what a great way to celebrate the Australian Year of the farmer – the posters created by Nimmitabel Showgirl Laura Clarke really showcased some of the local identities. Well done! But the action at Nimmitabel continues this Saturday night, when Laura takes on eight other entrants in the regional showgirl zone judging. With only one spot available to reach the state finals, the whole of Nimmitabel have their fingers crossed. Good luck Laura – the Nimmity lasses have done the town (and region) proud in the past, we hope you can to! Also on Saturday, the Cooma Rodeo will provide plenty of spills and thrills for competitors and spectators alike. Once again, there is something designed to promote lots of local support, in the Charity Steer Ride. One ‘guest’ competitor has suggested the invitation come with a free ride to hospital, but that won’t be necessary, The Postman is certain. Then again... Perhaps a laugh-metre could be used, though? Now that Parliament is returning from its Christmas break, can we expect 2012 to become a Federal election year? With so much speculation about the Labor leadership, surely something is going to blow up, sooner or later?

Communication issues Editor, The recent reports of “Big Storms cause Flooding” at Bredbo goes to show that no amount of computer modeling or fiddling will ever master Mother Nature, nor will any amount of dollars (Carbon Tax). The previous week ie, Christmas eve we also experienced a very localised storm with flash flooding and received more than 150m of rain in less than an hour at our property. The lack of a means to warn persons travelling on a busy holiday period at night was highlighted by the experience I had when trying to ensure that a message was relayed over the radio to warn of dangerous damage to a local country road at night. We live off the Peak View Road and visited friends on the afternoon of Christmas eve, suddenly extreme dark clouds appeared from the south followed by a heavy hailstorm and rain. We remained with our friends to await an easement of the elements, we live several kilometres downhill towards Celey’s Creek and as we drove all the drains and gutters were overflowing onto the gravel road. On our downhill drive on the bitumen section of the road we had to cross the culvert at the foot of Culvert Hill, on our approach downhill we noticed the road was flooded above the culvert for approx 40 metre, trees and stumps were crossing the road at an alarming rate, we backed uphill as there was no safe turning around on the road as both side drains were overflowing onto the road. At the top on more level ground we turned cautiously and called into another neighbours and waited for the water to subside before attempting to drive over the culvert where the gravel shoulders of the road between the bitumen and the concrete batters of the culvert had been washed away. We found Feeney’s Rd to be impassable as the same stream that flooded Culvert Hill culvert on Peak View Road had washed that culvert away on Feeneys Road and left a 2.5 metre deep and 6 metre wide hole. We had to use the old Feeney’s Rd to get home, once
arriving there we found that we had no electricity (we had to pollute the air on Christmas eve with candle light, (sorry about the pollution greenies). As the gravel shoulders of the bitumen road at the Culvert had been washed away in the flash flood we tried to notify the local radio stations (both AM and FM) to warn travellers on the Peak View Road of the danger, however, all to no avail as both stations were on automatic with no person answering a telephone. We rang the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council number for roads and spoke with a gentleman who said that he would get signs out that night and then men were again out on Christmas day with witches hats etc. I was very disappointed that there is not a more positve response for this type of EMERGENCY from the radio stations, in my opinion this a severe comunication failure and the radio stations should take note of it. Police contact at that time is at Queanbeyan, that is no help. The bitumen road base held, the damage is still visible both up and downstream and the council has had a team out working over the holiday period, however, there is still a lot of work to be done yet to ensure the safety of the road at that point. This communication failure, for the people on the ground unable to convey their observation to others especially by radio, was one of the main points raised in the Victorian Inquest, last bushfire storm where 179 people lost their lives, most people sitting behind computers and or phones have very little understanding of the emergency and or the locality involved. These flashfloods in our region are not new - 50-60 years ago they happened more often. There also another very critical point and that is the way our telephone works with an automatic answering machine from option 1 to 10, before you get to an human operator, after some considereble time. Artur Baumhammer Peak View.

TAFE course supports holistic land Special award for Tamara management Lisa Ashurst
As landowners become more aware of the practicalities of thinking outside the square when it comes to sustainable farm management, the profile of practices such as native grass pastures and holistic land management have become more widely accepted as workable farming concepts. Holistic management is not new. The concept was first developed In Africa around 40 years ago by a wildlife biologist/farmer/management consultant named Allan Savory whose research into practical grass and land management lead him to writing a book on the subject. In 1996, Goulburn-based commercial beef breeder, George Gundry, read Allan’s book, Holistic Management – A Framework for Decision Making, and found the information it contained made a lot of sense. “I felt the concepts put forward by Allan Savory were quite sensible and struck me as good ones that would work.” Mr Gundry said. “They were just simple changes but they had the potential to deliver a lot.” One of the key points with this type of land management is to move livestock around a lot more frequently and when Mr Gundry began to adopt the methods in the book for use on his own property he found it delivered excellent results. In fact, he was so impressed with what he saw, he began training in holistic management and in the mid 2000s, decided to take it to a new level and became involved in educating others on this very productive type of farming. “I felt that becoming involved with teaching others was the best way to share the information and the response to the course has been excellent! The interaction that builds between teachers and students is quite strong.” Originating out of the Western Institute of TAFE in Orange, in central west NSW, the Holistic Management course is now available at the Cooma TAFE Campus and will run for a full semester, commencing on February 9, 2012 and will consist of eight sessions of two days each. At the end of the course students will then receive a Certificate of Attainment. The popular course is also ongoing in many other areas and the next one for Orange will commence on February 21, 2012.
“Having the course available through the TAFE system is very good” Mr Gundry said “as it gives this course legitimacy and going by the response we’ve had it will become an ongoing course in Cooma too, we think.” Mr Gundry believes Cooma is very convenient as it is centrally located but he also has relatives in the area and is familiar with the Monaro region and is looking forward to being in the area again. The course has been developed to meet the needs of land managers for accredited training in holistic management. Students will learn how to assess the health of ecosystems and develop strategies which will enable them to manage their properties with a holistic goal to support the ecological, financial and social context required to manage land. The course will also see students develop the skills and the knowledge to monitor holistic management plans in order to maintain and improve the sustainable use of natural resources. It is also very useful for those who want to make decisions in general that are ecological, financial and socially sound in both the short and long term. It appears to be a very practical solution though, with 2500 people in Australia having undergone training in holistic management since 1994 and there are over 12 million hectares worldwide that are managed using holistic principles. There are currently 11 certified educators involved in the Holistic Management courses here and one who teaches almost on a full time basis now is Brian Welburgh who has conducted the course in Bega and Ulladulla (one year in each town) on the NSW south coast. “Where possible, Brian and I team-teach” Mr Gundry added “to support each other in running the course. But I really enjoy the teaching experience, it’s given me a whole new lease on life.” George Gundry still runs his commercial beef property but manages the time and travel involved in conducting the Holistic Management courses due to the wonderful support he gets from his family who share his commitment to the project. The fee for the course is $231.00 per semester. Anyone who would like further information on courses or Holistic Management in general can contact George Gundry on 0407 299 214 or via email at g.gundry@bigpond.com.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst I know it must sound like I’m on a patriotic thingy lately because I’ve been dishing it over stuff like Aussie-specific paraphernalia being made on foreign shores and people who fail to get into the spirit of January 26. But I can’t help myself because I keep hearing and seeing things that make me want to dish on them! Like the latest hamburger effort from McDonalds. Going back to the classic Aussie burger complete with traditional salad inserts (like beetroot) and even a little (probably made in China again) Aussie flag on the top etc. The ad shows all the traditional bits being put together one by one and then comes the hiccup. Ketchup! Correct me if I’m wrong (and I’m not!) but the Great Aussie Hamburger had tomato sauce, not ketchup, which happens to be an American tomato-based sauce that contains various spices plus vinegar. Yes I know, tomato sauce also contains a few spices and things but does not contain vinegar and the two sauces taste different. But to clarify the situation for those who actually may not know, here in Australia we Never Ever Called Tomato Sauce Ketchup! No really, we didn’t, we just called it
what it was…tomato sauce. We weren’t even sure what ketchup was to be honest. I mean, we’d hear the word on the tele from time to time, via some US program, but no one ever went into details, you know? Not that we were hanging for that info or anything but at some stage it came out that ketchup was sort of like our tomato sauce but not quite. It was also spicier. Personally I didn’t feel my life was enriched in any way by that knowledge and prior to acquiring it the subject never kept me up at night, but then I have never been overly fond of tomato sauce and very rarely eat it. (and I’ve just realised how unAustralian that sounds.) But it’s not just McDonalds. There’s an ad for a ride-on lawnmower and the guy doing the voiceover pronounces “grass” with the same short “a” as we do in “mass”. Sorry, but that’s not how we say it Down Under. Admittedly the ad company has corrected it in subsequent ads but it still pops up occasionally. But thank god someone got rid of that Kingsley’s Chicken ad; the way that guy said “awesome” was just downright embarrassing. Does anyone even say it like that? Well, as a general rule Australians don’t, at least they never used to… Advertisers need to really understand that.

Co-ordinated approach to cancer treatment for regional NSW Cancer patients and general practitioners across regional and rural NSW now have access to a more coordinated approach to cancer treatment across the State, the Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, Jillian Skinner, announced today. The Canrefer website (www.canrefer.org.au), an initiative by the Cancer Institute NSW, allows general practitioners and people diagnosed with cancer and their families to search for healthcare teams specialising in the treatment and care of specific cancers. The program allows people across rural and regional areas across the State to search for their closest specialist healthcare teams, and information including the radiation oncology, chemotherapy, palliative care and cancer genetics units closest to where they live. Using a Google search function, visitors to the website can search for information according to the geographical location and type of cancer to be
treated. The Minister launched the Canrefer website at the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre at Westmead Hospital, ahead of World Cancer Day tomorrow, with the Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee, and the Member for Granville, Tony Issa. “Canrefer connects people with cancer across regional and rural NSW and their GP with the most appropriate specialist cancer teams depending on where they live,” Mrs Skinner said. “This means more informed and timely referrals can be made by doctors, based on the individual needs of their patient,” she said. “Research shows well-coordinated care from a range of health disciplines greatly improves outcomes for people with cancer. These teams, including GPs, can address every aspect of the person’s health and wellbeing throughout treatment and recovery. “This website will be especially valuable for rural GPs and people with cancer who face the obstacle of distance when it comes to cancer referrals, or for new doctors who are not familiar with the specific cancer services in their area,” said Mrs Skinner. Chief cancer officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, Professor David Currow, said Canrefer helps GPs and people with cancer search for the services that are right for them. “We rely on our GPs to refer and treat people with a wide variety of cancers. Often there are specific cancers that a GP might only encounter once or twice over their career. It can be incredibly difficult to know the best place to refer these people, and time is critical to get them into the best treatment as soon as possible,” said Professor Currow. The website also offers practical information including maps, opening hours, parking facilities and contact details for cancer care coordinators.

Superbly Positioned Land with Council approved Plans to build You can place your foundation down tomorrow. This is a rare opportunity to secure building blocks with approved plans overlooking the centre of Cooma, Cooma Creek and Frank Norris Park. As close as you can get to all amenities and located only few hundred meters from the pool, you can walk to the CBD in a few minutes. Each block is of high standard of development and includes a controlled level-one building platform engineered by GHD and Coffeys. The developers have ensured that the blocks back on to an allotment that, under a DCP, cannot be built on, ensuring privacy and views. The architecturally designed townhouses have been approved for construction by Council and designed to maximise amenity and environmental standards. Each townhouse is detached and offers a unique blend of modern living while maintaining privacy and aspect. The land used to be a market garden with the back half consisting of black alluvial soils. Just have a look at how the lucerne grows. Each block has a large portion of this black soil where you can have the garden of your dreams.

The question I am always asked is – Where is the best place for me to invest? As you would have heard me say before if you are a regular reader, “everyone is different and everyone has different wants, needs and goals”. It is our job to to help you achieve this. There is a number of hot spots in Australia, but where we are buying ouselves and most of our clients are is Mackay, Mackay is Gold! WHY When you look at investing you must be focused on Capital Growth, as this is where the real money is. So what is driving the growth in Mackay? 1. $10 Billion being spent on infrastructure 2. Population growth is out of control 28,000 more house by 2020 3. 5000 new employees required for the new Mining port which will attract many Australian families 4. Diversified Industries – Mining – within 2 hrs (mining companies subsidise the rent) of the mines, servicing 16 mines plus the largest mining port in the country 2 hrs north and the third biggest being built 10 min south. Agriculture – Sugar and cotton and Tourism – servicing the Whitsundays 5. Positive Cash Flow Property – eg $400k property- returns a yield of approx. 7% - $600 p/w which means you will increase your income by approx. $100 p/w. 6. House shortfall currently with a point .5% rental vacancy, which is only going to get worse (or better if youʼre an investor as this will drive up the rents and the capital growth. 7. The QLD Govt will give you $10,000 boost for a limited time April 30 to cover deposit and cost. 8. Prices are on the move upwards, interest rates are coming down and you will also get tax savings. 9. Very importantly you can still buy new affordable property. The key is buying the right property in the best locations in Mackay in quality estates with high end inclusions. This is where we can help you out, we have been on the ground and identified the best locations and builders for a safe, secure and successful investment. We will be running a complimentary information night on Wed Feb 29 at the Alpine Hotel Function room 7.00pm to 8.30 pm, if you would like to learn how you can invest in Mackay and other hot spots and much more. To read and learn more or register for the information night please visit prosperitygroup.com.au\monaropost. Cooma Rural Rodeo With so many competitors travelling long distances to compete at the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, there has been a drop in the amount of local competitors willing to throw their hats in the ring and compete. But there is no reason for this to happen; there are plenty of events that are tailor made for local competitors, the only requirement is a sense of adventure and a
desire for adrenaline! Most entries are taken in the week prior to the Rodeo, with the only event where entries are taken on the day of the Rodeo being the Cochran Horse Treks Poley Buckjump. Junior Barrel Racing Barrel racing is an event that anyone can have a go at; and kids who love horses have their chance in one
of the three age divisions of the junior barrel race. Entry fees are cheap and you do not have to have a particular kind of horse to compete. You will however need to wear a long sleeve shirt, riding boots and an Australian Standard helmet and will need to be riding in either a stock or western saddle. Continued on P3...

Junior Steer Ride and Poddy Ride For every child who has wondered what riding a bucking bull would be like, the junior steer riding events are the place to start. Just like the junior barrel race, entry fees are cheap, and you will need to own, or borrow on the day, an Australian Standard helmet, a vest and a rope. For the Poddy Riders the Cooma Committee has equipment that Bush Basics has generously donated that can be borrowed on the day. There are no entries on the day for the Poddy Ride. Cherry Tree Equine Novice Barrel Race There is no age or experience the Cherry Tree Equine Novice The first event on the program, the Novice Barrel is a chance for anyone to have a go at barrel racing and for the more seasoned competitors to give their young horses a run. A change in the rules of the ABCRA means entries can no longer be taken on the day of the rodeo.

Divisional Barrel Race To be held on Sunday February 12, starting at 8am, barrel racing fans will have the chance to run their horses in an event never before held on the Monaro; a Divisional Barrel Race. What many people will find enticing is the fact that you do not have to have the fastest horse on the day to win; as all competitors are split into three divisions, meaning there will be three winners on the day. To help with training young horses and educating old ones, competitors are able to purchase exhibition runs before and after their competition run. Entries for the Divisional Barrel Race will be taken on the day. For more information on any of these events, or the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo in general, please visit www.coomarodeo. org.au.

Cochran Horse Treks Poley Buckjump The newest event at the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, the Cochran Horse Treks Poley Buckjump is a chance for local horsemen and women to try their hand at showing their style in front of their home crowd. Competitors will be judged for the style not only in the saddle, but their ability to crack a stock whip whilst in the air. Entries are limited for this event and will be taken on the day at the Secretary’s Office.

Who will be the winner and which charity will they donate to? The move towards the permanent arena at the Cooma Showgounds continues. Fundraising has been ongoing with event such as the A & C Fun Day, which will be held again in 2012. The most exciting development towards the new arena has been the purchase of bucking chutes from Priefert Australia. The bucking chutes have been purchased with Priefert’s assistance and will be arriving in Cooma in late February. The Cooma Rodeo Committee would like to thank all the sponsors, helpers and supporters of the Rodeo who make this event happen. We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 11th of February for a great day! Ian Brown President

Claire’s Gardening Notes for February With Claire Caldwell of Cooma Gas & Garden additional water after rain especially if the foliage is past the tendrils to keep the plant under control – this will help outer edge of the pot. The reason being that the foliage towards flowering next spring. Supplies may help to shed the water to the outside of the pot rather Planting. You can still plant many things this month For a lot of us February sees a return to the world of reality. Back to work, children are back to school or uni and the usual routine of weekends in the garden enjoying the last month of summer. This summer season has generally been on the cool side and we have seen the return of the good old thunderstorm with plenty of lightning, thunder and some rain. As usual with thunderstorms they can be quite hit and miss – some getting good rain, some destructive heavy falls and some only a few spots. So for the keen gardener it can be quite a mixed bag – some of us have had to keep up the water to our gardens while others have been lucky to get nice falls to keep everything growing. If you have been lucky enough to have had a holiday break then your garden may be in need of a mini makeover and some of the following may be in need of attention. Watering. Always keep checking garden beds and especially pots between rain showers to make sure no plants are suffering water stress. Potted plants will still need
than into it. Potted plants are always in need of constant observation for underwatering and overwatering. If you find any particularly dry spots in the garden after a good rain shower or showers and no amount of water seems to help then this spot has probably become hydrophobic and may need the addition of a wetting agent to solve the problem. Also begin to add plenty of organic compost and rotted manure to the area to keep the problem from recurring. Mulch. Most mulches are organic which means that over a space of time they will slowly diminish and will need topping up or replacing so the benefits of mulching are ongoing. Having a good organic mulching regime means also that hydrophobic soil shouldn’t happen. Pests and Diseases. February is a month of maintaining a healthy garden so pest and disease watch is most important. Some that are prevalent at this time of year include TWO SPOTTED MITE, SCALE, MEALY BUG, PEAR AND CHERRY SLUG, CATERPILLARS AND GRUBS, EARWIGS, GRASSHOPPERS, SNAILS AND SLUGS (they love damp humid conditions) GREEN VEGETABLE BUG AND HARLEQUIN BEETLES. All these pests if allowed free reign over your plants can lead to the plant becoming weaker and therefore prone to other plant problems eg disease, loss of vigour, poor growth etc. Diseases to look for are Black Spot and Powdery Mildew on roses. This summer has been particularly bad for these two diseases with the damper and more humid conditions so perseverance with your spray program is essential to the continued health and flowering of your roses. Adding regular applications of Seasol will also help your plants to resist disease attack. Try alternating the different sprays available for this problem. Tomatoes have also been struggling with some of the diseases that trouble them. Try Tomato Dust and keep them happy with fertiliser and water at regular intervals. Seasol is also beneficial. Pruning. With such a good growing season many plants have really powered on and some may need to be kept in check by having a good hair cut. Just check that your plant is not due to flower in the next few weeks before pruning or you will not have any autumn flowers. Rose growers should be continuing to remove any finished blooms. This will ensure continued flowering into autumn. Some perennials and annuals also need their old flowers removed. If you are growing Wisteria cut off the long twining
even in the GYO department. Freshen up the herb garden by replacing any herbs that look past their best – try something new- fresh picked herbs make your cooking great. The vegetable plot can have new plantings as well – including carrot, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, silverbeet and spinach. Harvest. Some of us who are part of the GYO (Grow Your Own) fruit and vegetables are harvesting some fresh produce now. Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, carrots, beetroot, onions, silverbeet, spinach are all ready to eat now. Raspberries, Blueberries, Strawberries, Apricots and Peaches will all be ripening now or have just finished. Hopefully the thought of a lot of our vegetables coming from overseas (China etc) will spur more people to start to grow some of their own produce. The freshness and taste of home grown produce is incomparable. You also have control over what is sprayed onto it and how it is fertilised – whether you go completely organic or partly organic. At Cooma Gas & Garden Supplies we stock a good range of organic products for the fruit and vegetable – or edible garden. Also if you are a follower of the climate change and global warming ideas then GYO produce lowers your carbon foot print – so you are helping the planet – so they say. Future Planning. This is a good time to plan plantings of fruit trees, berry plants, ornamental trees, rose plants because we have begun to take orders for the next bare root season that will begin in June. Another part of the garden to prepare planning is your spring flowering bulbs. These bulbs will be available very soon. Product Information. Just for something different here are some garden products that we have found to be very good in our gardens. Seasol - no gardener should be without this – great for all plants – transplanting – is a plant tonic not a fertiliser –helps stressed plants recover. Sudden Impact for Roses – for all rose growers this is the premium and best rose specific fertiliser – can be used on other flowering plants. Organic Advance Plus – great general purpose fertiliser for all the plants in the garden including trees and fruit trees. Zoo Doo – a new addition to our stock – this is composted Melbourne Zoo waste from elephants, giraffes and pygmy hippos etc – great to add to garden beds in need of some good organic mater. Showa Fine Work Gloves – good and fairly long lasting gloves – give great feel while gardening. Dram Watering Wand – this type of watering wand gives a lovely soft spray that penetrates into the soil or potting mix without spurting water and soil everywhere. Very good for newly planted seeds and seedlings. Enjoy your final month of summer in the garden – hopefully with some more rain and no scorching hot days.

»»BUSINESS OF THE WEEK«« Monaro Wool Services - Ph: 6452 4494 Monaro Wool Services continues to strive to offer ongoing service and commitment to their wool clients across the Monaro. With burgeoning demand for sheep meats and a solid wool price, the attractive nature of a sheep and wool package is something that is getting the attention of many growers and producers. Mixed joinings to both cross breeds and merinos has seen sheep flocks undergo some changes in their breeding patterns and with a better season and likelihood of more lambs on the ground, Monaro Wool Services are hoping for an increase in production and numbers over the coming year. With the linkages to the Shute Bell wool broking group and service resources that these contacts provide, Monaro Wool Services is looking forward to servicing and trading with their clients over the coming wool season. Commodity prices for many rural exports were affected by global economic conditions over the last 18 months, however returns from sheep and wool are helping to set a platform for woolgrowers and sheep breeders across the Monaro. With wool stores and depots at Cooma, Bombala, Queanbeyan,

The original Monaro Freight was started in the 1960s and has been a successful business ever since. The current owners purchased Monaro Freight in 2003 and have since expanded to incorporate OJ’s Freight, which was purchased in 2008. The move from the old wool store to the new larger premises on Polo Flat Road occurred in 2007, bringing with it another new era for Monaro Freight. Monaro Freight has a 3 times a day service from Canberra and Queanbeyan to Cooma, a daily service from Sydney and a regular service from Melbourne allowing them to distribute your parcels around the Cooma Region and Snowy Mountains areas in an efficient time-effective manner. Although they are not a removalist company as such, Monaro Freight will carry your new furniture purchases from the store to your front door. They are agents for blue circle cement and Adbri masonry products. Also available at the Polo Flat depot are a range of shipping containers, either for sale or rent and of varying sizes. Monaro Freight can take any size parcel/package, from an envelope to a full load, anywhere you want it delivered to. They have links to major international and national carriers to take your freight anywhere. All in all, Monaro Freight are your local carriers. They deliver everything except babies and livestock!

October 2011? That’s the day Snowy Hydro let the water go and the Snowy River slowly sprang back into life. Over the next week were you one of the many people who grabbed their camera, hopped in their cars and took a trip to the tiny township of Dalgety to take snap after snap after snap of our beautiful river looking superbly healthy again? Were you one of the many photographers lining the banks of the Snowy River or one of the many causing a human traffic jam on the Dalgety Bridge? Or maybe you were one of those who stood in awe as the Snowy River’s water gushed from the Jindabyne Dam spillway? If you were then read on. The Dalgety Show Society with the support of the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority is included three new classes in the show’s photography section. There is a class for everyone who took or has taken photos of the Snowy River. The classes are: 1. THE SNOWY RIVER - IT HAS CHANGED, IT IS CHANGING A series of up to four photos. 2.THE ENVIRONMENTAL RELEASE - SPRING 2011 3.THE SNOWY RIVER - FLOWING THROUGH OUR REGION
The people and the landscape If you would like to enter your photographs in this competition then you can email chief steward, Annemarie Doyle at annemariedoyle54@gmail.com or keep your eyes open for the Dalgety Show Society schedule coming to a shop near you. Keep in mind the Entry Form closing date: Friday 2nd March 2012. Entries can be sent to A. Doyle, Post Office, Dalgety 2628, or submitted from 12 noon until 4pm at the Dalgety Showground on Saturday March 3. Entries will be accepted on show day - Sunday March 4 - only until 8.30am. Name, address and phone number must be on back of photographs. Only photographs mounted on cardboard will be accepted. Any photograph larger than 13 cm x 18 cm will be judged as an enlargement. All care will be taken but no responsibility will be accepted by the society for any loss or damage to any exhibit. Don’t despair, if you missed taking any Snowy River snaps then you can still enter your photographs in the usual classes that are held each Dalgety Show. Let’s celebrate the environmental flows in October 2011 into the Snowy River.

The gates opened and the beautiful Snowy River showed again, and what a sight.
Barilaro welcomes decision on ethanol Member for Monaro John Barilaro has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to scrap the previous Labor Government’s scheduled ban on unleaded petrol. “Our rejection of the previous Government’s policy will be warmly welcomed in the community,” Mr Barilaro said. The previous Labor Government had a policy to replace all regular grade unleaded petrol with ethanol blended petrol in 2010. The start date for the regular unleaded ban was postponed to 1 July 2012 when it became clear that the supply would not meet the expected demand. “Monaro residents would have experienced a higher cost of fuel and a higher cost of general living if this flawed Labor policy was implemented,” Mr Barilaro said.
“This ban was a typical Sydney solution, it made everyone feel good inside, but would have delivered no environmental benefit at all.” The Cabinet decided on Monday to introduce legislation to overturn the former Government’s laws which would have made the sale of unleaded petrol illegal from 1 July. “Most locals I have spoken to were upset about the regular unleaded ban and angered by Labor’s outspoken support for the measures,” Mr Barilaro said. “I am committed to giving motorists the freedom to choose what fuel they want to use and not forcing them onto a fuel that has a higher cost or is less efficient.”

Merimbula Knights take Berridale’s 6 a side cricket crown In a terrific day of cricket action on January 29, the Merimbula Knights team walked away with the 2012 MDCA 6 a side trophy turning the tables on last years champions Berridale. The Merimbula Knights team captained by Jeremy Fernando, went through to the finals just on percentage as the highest placed losing team however played terrific cricket in the two finals to secure their well deserved victory. With 13 teams competing and a healthy crowd of family and friends watching on the cricket action was fast and furious as fours, sixes were hit and wickets fell at a cracking pace throughout the day. Highlights of the day included some strong junior performances from the Merimbula Knights and, the Berridale Post Young Guns including taking out the long distance throwing and junior sprint competitions. The day saw local Daniel Jacobs regain his title in the seniors MDCA sprint after the first final finished in a three way dead heat. Earlier in the day the highly fancied Jindabyne were upset by Michael Lehrman’s Custard Arms team and Wolfies Wobblers upset the CSG team led by Zac Smith. Sam Williams was terrific with Bat and Ball for the Lime Milkshakes team whilst the Expats team led by Brendon Geeves were unlucky to just miss out on a place in the finals on percentage run rate differential. Some big hitting, tight bowling and good sportsmanship were the order of the day as each team played their round robin games before fiercly contesting the finals. The awards for the days Best Batsman went to Michael Lehman, whilst Best Bowling also went to Sam Williams. Ben Hearn was awarded the player of the tournament collecting plenty of runs and a number of wickets. The cricket action returns next weekend with normal fixtures across the Monaro as well as the quarter finals of the MDCA Super 8’s cricket

Cooma Rifle club Last Saturday shooting was from 400 yards for the monthly heat of the NRA medal competition. It was cool and overcast to start with then after the clouds cleared, hot and humid. There was a variable but mostly gentle wind from the north. Damien Doyle called in but didn’t shoot. He is back from the annual Queen’s prize shoot in Sydney, shooting in B grade. He did very well winning B grade in the Mackintosh lead up series and came fifth in the grand aggregate for B grade in the

Women’s bowls
Jindabyne provided a damp misty day for the semifinals of the triples . Just damp but not enough to stop play. It was good to see all clubs represented in the semis. The results were as follows L.McMahon def D.Turner; M.Murphy def L.West. The final next week will be between the team of G.Daal,A.Madden and L.McMahon from Adaminaby and N.Cannell (sub M.Siddle),G.Caldwell and M.Murphy from Nimmitabel. This should be a very exciting and close game , at least the length is limited, not like the tennis !!

Mel Storta also got an early lead on Neil McGregor to lead 15/4 on end 11 and although Neil played well over the closing stages he was unable to bridge the gap for Mel to win 31/18, after 33 ends. Geoff Venables was another early starter against Mick Mayhew and didn’t falter on the way home to win 31/10. Peter Harris kept John Schoon on his toes for the first seven ends, when John took control of the match to run out a 31/14 winner. Brian Seears started with a dash against Terry Croker and allowed him to score on only five of the s4 ends played for Brian to advance 32/8. short lived as Colin won the last four ends to win 31/22. In social bowls on Saturday, Daphne Buckley and Dave McDonald were early leaders against Dawn Russell and Ron Gammon but five shots to Dawn and Ron on the second last end and one on the last gave them a draw 20/20. After 13 ends Peter had a winning lead 20/3 and never let up to finally win 31/7. In social bowls on Sunday Mario Frezza, Ignazio Mondello and Paul Cannell were too strong for Keith Goodwin, Jim Lumsden and Guilio D’Amico and were
winners 22/16. Ken Bowden and Richard Nicholls trailed Maureen D’Amico and Ron Gammon in the early stages but Ken and Richard came home strongly to gain a narrow win 21/19. At one stage of their match Wayne Fogarty, Jack Sajina and Mark Buckley trailed Steven Seears, Peter Marsicano and Denis Steinfort, but picked up 11 shots over the three ends to go down narrowly 18/22.
