Focus on local sales and service

The new owners of High Country Toyota are enjoying their move to Cooma, saying the town has been very welcoming. Carla Tory and Adam D’Amato intend to make their life in Cooma and are very happy to become part of this community. Both have extensive experience in motor dealerships, both in new and used cars. While Adam is the dealer-principal of High Country Toyota, Carla is the business administrator. Both want to offer their clients personal service from a locally owned and operated business. High Country Toyota will offer Monaro residents new Toyota, Subaru and Hyundai vehicles plus a vastly increased range of used vehicles. Carla said this would allow a much wider choice of vehicles

in a price range to suit most budgets. The business is now open for parts and service on Saturday mornings and Carla said as owners, she and Adam are available 24/7 to meet clients’ needs. They hope to increase sales so they can increase staff numbers and will recruit locally. Carla also believes in dealing with local suppliers, keeping local money in the region and supporting the local community. They have offered sponsorship to local groups, such the Cooma Show and the Cooma Golf Club. Is the Fido crew for you? A new social group called the FIDO crew has started in the Snowy River and Cooma area for young people who are over 18 years of age, and experience isolation due to illness or a disability. If you want to go places, try different activities, then the FIDO crew could be for you as nothing is fun on your own. The group is self structured and self managed, with a few helpful volunteers making sure it happens. Already the group has been to Summernats in Canberra, and plans are being made for quad biking, the Hill Climb in Canberra and even abseiling. They Big Day Out is definitely on the agenda for next year. The focus of the group is what you can do, not what you can’t.

More crew members are needed to really get this group pumping, the FIDO crew is holding a BBQ to met any new members and families on Friday, February 11th at 6.30 for 7 pm this will be held at Kunama Gallery, Kunama Drive, East Jindabyne, and you are very welcome. This is a great opportunity for you to meet other like minded young adults with similar desires and challenges, and have fun together because in a group you can achieve so much more. If you want more information about FIDO, give Deb Duffy a call on 0414 843 200 or email her on debduffy@bigpond.net.au or information can be sort from Elizabeth Maxwell at Monaro Family Support on 6452 3450

Fire and Rescue NSW (formerly NSW Fire Brigade) is looking for recruits to work from Thredbo and Perisher Fire Stations. Applicants don’t have to be an ‘action man or woman’, but provided they are fit and healthy and have time to spare they could join the retained firefighter ranks of the Fire and Rescue NSW. The service is looking for at least eight recruits to join the existing teams working from Perisher and Thredbo Stations. A retained Fire Station is a Fire Station where ‘part time’, ‘on call’ retained firefighters work. The station is not a permanently staffed station, meaning the retained firefighters are ‘on call’ from home or work rather than on duty at the station. Retained Fire Stations respond to emergencies 24 hours a day. Retained firefighters are men and women who are ‘on call’ to respond to a range of emergencies. These may be fires, floods, road traffic accidents or chemical spills. Retained Firefighters also visit schools and other community events to provide community education. Many retained firefighters have other full or parttime jobs, but when the call comes they are ready to drop whatever they are doing and become part of a team, ready to face any emergency. Although they are ‘on call’ they are trained and capable of saving life and property. Retained firefighters come in a range of shapes and sizes. It is a tough job and they need to be fit and healthy.

They also need to live or work within a reasonable distance from a fire station so that they can respond quickly in an emergency. Because it’s impossible to predict when a fire fighter will be needed, they have to be flexible and available at short notice. The chances are that they will be at home, working for themsleves or working for a community-minded employer who can let them take time off from time to time at short notice. Recruits will be given training to equip them for their role. As primary response units, firefighters at Perisher and Thredbo will be trained in primary rescue and BLS. Duty Commander of Regional South 1, Norman Buckley, described the roles as diverse and dymanic. He said work in the alpine areas was very different to coastal or lowland areas. Recruits will work with the Rural Fire Service, police and State Emergency Services personnel in emergencies. He said training would probably be held at Albion Park, and would consist of phase one, of four days duration, followed phase two of two days duration. Recruits at the mountains stations will be using a variety of equipment, including quad bikes and new $400,000 unit and skidoos. They will be required to undergo monthly training drills and training as determined by their station captain or deputy captain. Mr Buckley said the firefighters are paid to do their training and as retained firefighters, receive a monthly retainer, as well as an hourly rate when called out. Call 0417 418 228 for more information.

Monaro High School’s environmental group under the guidance of teacher Kasey Marks has recently installed a new bubbler for students to use. The environmental group, made up of approximately 30 students from years 8-10, have been holding various fundraisers around the school to fund this new, environmentally friendly, water source. It is hoped that more bubblers can be purchased in the future to make free clean water more easily accessible across the school. The environmental group meet every morning during Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) to brainstorm and implement environmental plans that will help contribute to a sustainable future for the school. They work closely with Jeff Tate, who is the Resource and Waste Officer for Cooma-Monaro Shire Council. The aim is to gradually phase out bottled water from the canteen and to encourage students to bring their own bottles to school and refill them at the new bubbler. “The environmental group are very enthusiastic and are always coming up with innovative ideas on how we can make our school more sustainable,” Mrs Marks said. Once the school has a sufficient number of bubbler fountains the group will then try

and install some around town. The environment must be maintained for future generations and for our own benefit, and Monaro High School has possibly started a new trend that may get our town looking ‘greener’.

If you’re a working parent expecting a child, there’s something else you can expect On 1 January 2011, Australia’s first national Paid Parental Leave scheme was introduced. It’s a new entitlement for working parents, funded by the Australian Government. Taking time away from work for a new baby is a common part of working life. Paid Parental Leave will help parents spend time with a new baby, and help employers retain skilled staff. What is Paid Parental Leave? Eligible working parents may get 18 weeks Government-funded pay at the National Minimum Wage, currently $570 a week before tax, to help them care for a new baby. Parents who adopt may also be eligible. Am I eligible? Full-time, part-time, casual, seasonal, contract and self-employed workers may be eligible. You must have worked at least 330 hours (just over one day a week) for 10 of the 13 months before your new baby arrives. You can have up to an 8 week unpaid break

between two working days and still be eligible. You can earn up to $150,000 a year (individual salary) and still be eligible. Is it for both parents? Yes, usually the mother must apply for Paid Parental Leave. If you are eligible, you can transfer some or all of the pay to your partner (they need to be eligible too). The scheme gives families more options to balance work and family. When can I take it? You can claim up to three months in advance, and your pay can start at any time you choose from when your child is born or adopted. It will be paid in one continuous period from the start date and must all be taken within the first year after the birth or adoption. You are encouraged to apply early.

What about employer-provided entitlements? Eligible parents can receive Parental Leave pay at the same time, before or after other employer-provided paid leave or entitlements. The existing minimum entitlement to 12 months unpaid parental leave for long-term employees is unchanged. What does it mean for employers? From 1 July 2011, employers must provide Government-funded Parental Leave pay through their usual pay cycle to eligible employees who have been with their business for at least 12 months. Other eligible parents will be paid through the Family Assistance Office.

Cooma small businesses are invited to attend a free seminar about an Australian Government service that saves them time and paperwork when paying employees’ superannuation. The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House is a free, optional, service available to any Cooma region businesses with fewer than 20 employees. The clearing house enables businesses to make all their employee contributions in a single electronic transaction and easily meet their superannuation guarantee obligations. Human Services Portfolio General Manager Hank Jongen said Cooma employers who use the clearing house would avoid paying super to multiple super funds, each with different rules and systems. “You simply pay employee’s contributions to the clearing house and it then sends them to the appropriate funds – saving you paperwork and giving you more time to focus on other aspects of your business,” Mr Jongen said. Small businesses in surrounding regions are already discovering the benefits of using the clearing house. In Queanbeyan, the clearing house has cut the Rutledge Plaza Medical Practice’s super administration time from an hour to a few minutes a month. “Once you are set up it is easy to use. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending it to other small businesses,” practice manager Maree Latimer said. Medicare Australia, which administers the clearing house, is hosting the 30 minute free seminar. Clearing house representatives will discuss the benefits of using the service, answer questions and advise employers how they can easily register and use the clearing house. The seminar will be held at the Snowy BEC Training Room, 38 Bombala Street, Cooma, at 5:30pm on Tuesday 15 February. To RSVP to the seminar, please contact Elisa Daley on 02 6155 1668 or email elisa.daley@ centrelink.gov.au. Employers can discover more information about the clearing house at www.medicareaustralia.gov. au/super or by calling 1300 660 048.

Emergency services were called to Woolworths carpark last Thursday to assist with a grease trap spillage.

Emergency services were called to Woolworths carpark last Thursday afternoon when a grease trap overflowed and flooded the carpark. Local plumber, Darren Bottom spent several hours on site trying to fix the problem which was exacerbated by heavy rain in a storm that hit Cooma in the late afternoon. Cooma and Jindabyne Fire Brigades also attended, firstly to set up barriers to stop the overflow reaching Cooma Creek and also spread sand to soak up the spillage. Cooma-Monaro Shire Council also used its street cleaning equipment to mop up the spill. Mr Bottom said the spill could have been much worse if he had not been able to attend so quickly. He said grease traps need to have regular cleanouts to prevent this sort of incidence occurring. Roll over Cooma Police report there were no injuries when a 4WD towing a caravan rolled near Wambrook last Saturday. The vehicle slid off the road and hit a fence before rolling.

Another Curley One

Politics a toxic board game Editor, The people of NSW rightly do not want their utilities sector sold off. Further, the oversubscribed solar energy rebate indicates that people prefer energy security by way of locally and regionally generated clean energy, rather than rely solely on the national grid and ‘national energy market’, especially if under a globalised system. Solar hot water is the fast track to dropping power consumption and bills as is a higher standard of housing, double glazed windows, eaves etc. The problem is that many politicians appear

to be about staying in power and securing their own long-term interests. The perpetual play off between the two major parties is a toxic board game that defeats the public interest and puts at risk essential services, nine the least the energy sector. The indications are that the Snowy Hydro Board will attempt another sale after the NSW state elections so the time is now for the leaders of the major parties to declare their hand on the jewel in the crown of water and energy security. Acacia Rose Thredbo

I guess it all started when a German named Benz Created a way to go faster. He put wheels on an engine, took off down the road But that’s not where this story ends.

Hmmm, stinking hot one day, a frost the next. This must be the Monaro. Mother Nature sure has the irrits with parts of Australia, doesn’t she? While Perth burns, the east coast is getting the drenching of a lifetime. The Postman thinks La Nina and Mother Nature have been on the whoopee weed together.

Along came others to copy this thing And to make it a little bit better. Some ideas were quite mad or only a fad But the ‘caraze’ was now in full swing. Then Henry decided, that’s Ford don’t you know, To make them faster and cheaper. He built in a line which worked simply fine Dealing others a terrible blow.

But it takes more than a bit of water to stop the Nimmitabel Show Society from forging ahead with its annual show. Despite a soaking on Friday night and threatening scuds all day, the showground remained relatively unscathed until the show was over and patrons could take shelter in the most appropriate building on the ground.

Now Henry, that’s Royce don’t you know, Met someone who’s name was Charles Rolls. Together they schemed, forming a team, For their car you needed the dough! And here we are now with these things everywhere, Most families having more than just one. They need them you see to avoid misery When one of them’s in for repair!

With the Cooma Rodeo only a couple of days away, weather-watchers will be on tenterhooks to see what is in store this weekend. If it is a bit damp, though, the competitors in the charity steer ride will have a softer landing. The Postman hears a few footballers from our different codes face a bit of a challenge happening. Could be a lot of fun to watch.

Luke at this...

This weekend also sees the Lion Club charity art exhibition open at the Raglan Gallery – this should also be worth a visit. And to start our week, Premier Keneally has apologised to NSW ratepayers. Does that suddenly make it all better?

Rehearsals for Cooma Little Theatre’s production of Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize winning “Harvey” are well underway. Director Caroline Fox has shows scheduled for March 18 - April 2 with a matinee on Sunday March 27. The cast include Tim Cooke as Elwood P Dowd, CAT Award Nominee Nell Pernitsch as Veta, Liz Dwyer as Myrtle Mae, Cathy Burge as Mrs Chauvenet, Jayne Keegan as Miss Kelly, Mark Salvestro as Dr. Sanderson, Michael Coyte as Wilson, Doug Rendoth as Dr. Chumley, Wendy Chapman as Mrs Chumley, Damien Kenneally as Judge Gaffney and David Unwin as Cabby - EJ Lofgren. The 1952 movie based on the play featured James Stewart in one of his most famous performances. Veta is trying to introduce her daughter into society. Unfortunately her brother Elwood’s behaviour is causing her embarrassment. The problem is not so much with Elwood, rather his best friend, Harvey. Not only does Harvey frequent too many bars and poker games, he is also a rabbit standing at more than six feet tall; furthermore, Elwood seems to be the only person who can see or hear him. When she attempts to have Elwood committed to a psychiatric hospital a series of misfortunes

results in Veta being admitted instead. During the course of one evening, the hospital staff, the family lawyer and anybody else crossing the path of Elwood and Harvey are all confronted with a question Could Elwood perhaps be the sanest one of them all? All the wonderful set has been constructed once again by Bob Coles with the help of cast and crew. Painting and other final touches will begin in the coming weeks. Rehearsal have been very productive with all three acts getting a good workout but also full of fun. Pictured from left; Liz Dwyer, Nell Pernitsch and Damien Kenneally in rehearsals for Harvey.

This is now solely left to the State Governments When Keating came into power after defeating Hewson, Departments of public works and local councils, which the Liberal Opposition leader, he began the closing down have been greatly downsized over the years to contract of the CD of PW with approximately 8500 staff made out much of the design and construction supervision of redundant throughout Australia under his leadership. public works to private enterprise. When Howard defeated Keating, he sold off what was With the general shortage of engineering and technical staff in our society at present this will have a great effect, in my opinion, on the success and progress of tis massive rebuilding work program. The Commonwealth and State Governments have lost a lot of the expertise to adequately estimate, plan and supervise this rebuilding work. In my opinion. This was a major cause of the problems the Commonwealth Government had with the home insulation and the stimulus building work because the government did not have the aid of the CD of PW which normally planned and supervised this work the CD PW had all relevant documentation for this work on hand. This was lost when it was closed don. After the major 1956 Cooma flood the SMA assisted the Cooma council in the redesign and construction of a new, wider creek flow channel through the town area, to provide better flood protection. The existing creek had been a heavily vegetated narrower, meandering channel Y E N G MO which restricted flood flow. SPENDIN Several years ago, SMEC carried out new flood flow studies for Cooma Creek channel to provide higher channel For 4 people for 7 nights sides in concrete blocwork to handle meteorological studies, for a new design Airfares & accommodation flood flow in Cooma Creek. This was part of Sir William Hudson’s policy of using the resources of the SMA

in aiding state governments in public works. The dam was named after the Minister for National Development at the time, Fairbairn. SMEC was also involved on Wivenhoe Dam for Brisbane water supply and flood mitigation control. Both these dams have been featured on new bulletins lately, associated with the devastating Queensland floods. The SMA also designed the Cardinia Creek Dam and SMEC the larger Thomson Dam for Melbourne water supply. Both these dams combined when full have the storage capacity of approximately 75 percent of Melbourne’s water supply. In the mid 1950s the CD of PW designed Cooma Airport. The airport was constructed by the SMA day labour forces. The airport was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh and what a very major Cooma royal event that was with many hundreds of Cooma citizens attending the opening ceremony at the airport. In the 1980s SMEC carried out flood control studies for Alice Springs at the hydraulic engineering laboratory in Cooma, by building a hydraulic scale model for their studies. In 1976 Lake Eucumbene came up to 300mm (one foot) approximately below full supply level. The SMA was concerned that the existing emergency spillway channel which was located east of the main dam would be insufficient to discharge any major flood flow with the lake at this high level. SMEC was engaged to redesign the existing emergency spillway channel built in 1966 for a new flood flow spillway in 1976 by the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology. This new flood flow required a new spillway to have approximately 65 percent greater discharge capacity than the original emergency spill way channel to keep the maximum flood level in the lake no higher than approximately 2.13m (7ft) above the full supply level. This revised flood flow was classified as a 1 in 20,000 year event and involved a flood flow into the raising the lake level 2.13m in approximately 10 days (a Noah’s Arc flood). This flood design had to be very conservative. After the new gated concrete chute spillway was constructed urgently in 1977 the level of Lake Eucumbene continued to fall where today it is only approximately 25 percent full. From the 1950 to 1970 the CD of PW was a leader in the technical expertise in public works, setting a very high standard in the building and construction industry, Regrettably these standards were gradually allowed to be relaxed by poor design and supervision control, by department leaders and politicians, allowing the CDPW to degenerate into insignificance, with a great loss to the Australian building and construction industry. Fortunately many of the design and construction standards produced by the CD of PW still apply today and are still highly respected. The Commonwealth Experimental Building Research Laboratories provided very valuable and vital information for the building and construction industry for many years, producing numerous design and construction guides which are still relevant today. The laboratories were regrettably closed down several years ago with the closing down of CD of PW. Epilogue: The Brisbane floods are an ominous warning of what will happen when the sea level rises due to global warming. This will be permanent, frightening. Soft End for New Home Sales in 2010 New home sales eased for a second consecutive month in December 2010, says the Housing Industry Association, the voice of Australia’s residential building industry. The latest HIA - JELD-WEN New Home Sales Report, a survey of Australia’s major residential builders, showed that the number of new homes sold eased by 0.6 per cent in December 2010. Detached house sales inched up by 0.3 per cent while the sale of multi-units dropped by 7.3 per cent. HIA Chief Economist, Dr Harley Dale, said new home sales confirmed that 2010/11 would be a weaker financial year for housing starts. “New home sales fell by 4.4 per cent in calendar year 2010 and were down by 11 per cent over the second half of last year. New home sales grew in the December 2010 quarter (up 3.6 per cent) thanks to a strong month in October, but the November rate hikes put a swift closure to any prospect of a sustained improvement, Harley Dale said. “The trajectory of interest rates and rate expectations in 2011 will be a key driver of new home sales activity this year. In that regard indications yesterday from the Reserve Bank that

we are in for a period of interest rate stability are welcome. Let’s hope they can stick to the script, Harley Dale said. “Meanwhile supply side obstacles, including an on-going credit squeeze, continue to plague the new home sector. The policy backdrop unfortunately appears to be tilting away from support for new home building. The latest announcements, including the capping of the NRAS program, signal unfavourable policy directions in terms of boosting new housing supply, added Harley Dale. In the month of December 2010, detached new house sales increased by 3 per cent in New South Wales, 5.8 per cent in Queensland, and 4.2 per cent in Western Australia. Sales fell by 3.7 per cent in Victoria and 6.6 per cent in South Australia. Total detached house sales increased by 3.6 per cent in the December 2010 quarter but remained down by 8.3 per cent compared to the December 2009 quarter.

Subdued End to 2010 for House Prices The ABS index of established house prices grew at a subdued rate in the December quarter 2010 said the Housing Industry Association (HIA), the voice of Australia’s residential building industry. HIA’s Senior Economist, Andrew Harvey, said that established house prices grew by 0.7 per cent in the December quarter 2010 to be up by a relatively modest 5.8 per cent since the December quarter 2009. “The rate of house price growth is fairly subdued, which is what we have expected given tighter monetary policy, less fiscal stimulus directed at housing, and the occasional doomssayer prediction that Australian house prices are about to tumble,” said Andrew Harvey. “HIA Economics is still of the view that house prices will be on a relatively flat trajectory in 2011 due to interest rate expectations and the overall conditions relating to investment in housing. However, in the longer term Australia’s housing market is underpinned by strong fundamentals including healthy underlying demand,” Andrew Harvey noted. In terms of the jurisdictions, in the December quarter 2010 the established house price index increased by 1.6 per cent in Sydney, 1.3 per cent in Melbourne, 0.7 per cent in Brisbane,

1.1 per cent in Adelaide, 1.1 per cent in Hobart, and 1.9 per cent in Canberra. The house price index was flat in Darwin while Perth was the only jurisdiction in which prices fell, with the index down by 3.2 per cent. The weighted average index for project homes across Australia’s eight capital cities increased by 0.8 per cent in the December quarter 2010 to be up by a modest 2.8 per cent compared to the December quarter 2009. This is in line with headline inflation which was up by 2.7 per cent over the same period. The capital city project house price index increased in the December quarter 2010 by 1.2 per cent in Sydney, 0.7 per cent in Melbourne, 0.9 per cent in Brisbane, 0.2 per cent in Adelaide, 0.3 per cent in Perth, and 1.6 per cent in Darwin. The project house price index was flat in the December quarter 2010 in Hobart and Canberra. “If we wish to ensure that Australia’s population is properly housed, and we want to limit affordability problems that stem from under-building, then as a nation we need a keen focus on lifting new home construction to an extent that removes unnecessary upward pressure on home prices over the longer term,” added Andrew Harvey.

Building approvals data does not diminish need for rates caution Statement by Executive Director of the the number of private sector houses approved MBA-ACT, John Miller Canberra’s peak building and construction industry organisation, Master Builders ACT believes the December building approvals data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today has validated the Reserve Bank’s decision earlier this week to leave interest rates on hold. The executive director of the MBA-ACT, John Miller said the ABS data, revealing a national seasonally-adjusted increase of 8.7 per cent in total dwelling units approved need to be carefully interpreted in circumstances where there had been no significant movement with respect to private sector dwellings. “Virtually the entire positive movement in building approvals in December was owed to multi-unit developments – something which does not reflect the degree to which individual consumers were unnerved by the rate rises which closed out 2010,” he said. Looking at the data for the ACT, Mr Miller said it was reflective of the national trend with

having declined significantly in original terms but with total approvals having actually increased. “The level of multi-unit development approved during December has served to disguise the impact of the rate rise imposed before Christmas and, in those circumstances, the Reserve Bank was absolutely correct in its decision to leave rates on hold this month,” he said. Mr Miller said a more accurate picture of the situation in December could probably be discerned by comparing the data with the same month in 2009. “By doing that, you note that total dwelling units approved were down by five per cent,” he said. Mr Miller said he was hopeful the Reserve Bank would continue to note the pressures being applied to the economy because of the natural disasters which had occurred in Queensland and elsewhere and would leave rates on hold for the foreseeable future.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst Twins I and II turned 19 today. Yes, that’s right. One year short of 20 and it’s almost as big a shock as Daughter turning 21 just over a month ago. How could my kids be 19 and 21 already? I definitely do not remember giving any of them permission to grow up that fast but hey, when do kids ever listen to a word you say. I remember a friend’s mother saying to her when she turned 20 “Now remember, if anyone ever asks, you’re still only 14 and your sister is 12. My friend married at 22 and when she fell pregnant a year later she asked “So how old can I be now or does this have to be an underage pregnancy? “It’s okay her mum replied “you grew up real fast when we announced the engagement. “So, I wasn’t a child bride then? We never asked how old her mum was supposed to be but we figured she probably stayed on the right side of 40 for as long as she could get away with it. immune to it either. As a very well known national speedway champion in his day, my father was often in the newspapers and I remember him being 27 for years and years... and then one day he turned 32. Five years older just like that. My mother remained 21 until I was old enough to figure that would have made her 10 years old when she had me so she admitted to 28 but I could count on my fingers fairly well by then and it still didn’t add up. At least I never lied to my kids about my age, I just didn’t tell them anything until I felt they were old enough to be trusted with that kind of information and smart enough to keep it to themselves. It’s not something that people generally ask anyway, so where’s the point in telling them? But back to the Twins being 19 today. I was coping with it until Daughter piped up with “Oh my god! Do you realise that when Keith and Gavin turn 21 I’ll be 23? That’s like, only seven years off 30! I’m not sure who looked more horrified, her or me, but it could have been her because she claimed she was having a mid life crisis when she turned 20. But you know, she’d probably pass for 14. Maybe we should have a little talk about that...

Wean More lambs – capitalize on

A local landcare group is working hard to help landowners target Serrated Tussock with a Field Day to be held at Berridale on Friday February 11. “As they say, knowledge is power” explains Phil Daley from Berridale Rocky Plain Landcare, “so we aim to provide landowners with the latest information available”. The field day will cover spray timing and techniques, herbicide selection, plant identification, management plans and monitoring, with District Agronomist Luke Pope and Snowy River Shire Council weeds officer Charlie McPhie there to provide expert advice. Mr Daley has managed to drastically

reduce the serrated tussock on his own property through best practise methods and vigilant management strategies so he realises first hand the challenges that face farmers who have to deal with serrated tussock. “We hope that landholders will go away with skills, knowledge and also the support to help them plan and implement effective weed control strategies”. The field day is at the CWA Hall in Berridale from 8:30am Friday February 11. For more information, or if you would like to attend, please

A clay bird in the hand... The Cooma Community Garden is a not-for-profit group located on the Uniting Church grounds in Soho Streeet, Cooma. It has been operating for around two years and is co-ordinated by Lisa Baier. The land was kindly donated by the Uniting Church. The garden consists of 15 plots, 12 of them privately owned, with another six being made. The CCG recently received a grant of $3694, which was part of the ‘Water Saving Community Project’ of the NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund Public Facilities Program. It will be used to install a water tank in the garden. A vast amount of fruits and vegetables are harvested in the garden including corn, radish, zucchini, beans, squash, pumpkin, capsicum, beetroot, rhubarb, strawberries and apricots. Many flowers are also grown for personal enjoyment and to keep the grounds looking attractive. Various fundraisers and workshops on herbs and preserving foods are held regularly to educate people on how to lead an organic lifestyle. There is also a communal bed for

anyone to use, which has a beautiful birdbath and a garden seat donated by Coffey’s Hotel. Globe artichokes are currently being harvested on this plot. The CCG is holding a “pottery in the garden” event on Sunday February 13 at 11am. The cost will be $7 where participants of all ages will be able to make a personalised clay bird that will become part of the flock and perch on the next garden installation. Bring your own lunch and drink and any other sustenance you require. Bookings are essential for this event. The garden is supported by a number of people around town including school chaplain and guitar/ singing teacher Matt Charlesworth, Cooma Health and Bulk Store, dietician Jeremy Wing from Cooma Hospital and Paul Ronan from Snowy Hydro. Anyone is welcome to attend the annual general meeting on Tuesday March 8 at 6pm where information regarding membership, harvesting and etiquette in the garden will be provided. Local Communities become involved in Koala surveys By Lisa Ashurst

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW), which is part of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), has recently held a series of public meetings throughout the Cooma-Monaro region to highlight the current koala surveys soon to be undertaken around parts of the Southern Tablelands. The surveys are part of a much broader program that initially began in the coastal forests of south east NSW in 2007, following koala surveys that took place in the early 2000s which revealed an important koala population that was spread out through forest and woodland areas to the north east of Cooma. These recent meeting held in Bredbo, Cooma and Numeralla over February 1, 2 and 3 were designed to provide vital information about the surveys to the local communities and to hopefully recruit volunteers to assist the DECCW with the current surveys which will be conducted over the coming months. The Southern Region of NPWS is looking for volunteers to help with the koala surveys in the areas between Tinderry and Kybeyan Nature Reserves and will involve searching through leaf litter at the base of 30 trees around a defined point and identifying koala pellets. Volunteers would need to have a reasonable level of fitness and be able to carry their own food, water and wet weather gear for the day. Luke McLachlan, Ranger for the Snowy River Area said “The idea of these community meetings is to talk about the surveys and to ask for public assistance. That’s our main purpose here.” NPWS Area Manager for Queanbeyan, Julie Crawford, also mentioned the importance of local knowledge, adding that members of local communities are

27

very welcome to join in the surveys, especially if they have knowledge of koalas in their local area. DECCW is currently aware of populations in the Southern Highlands, north east Monaro and the south coast. Merimbula based Koala Recovery Co-ordinator, Chris Allen, gave a detailed presentation on the koala populations and the impact on those populations over the years from various events. “There was a quite sudden and dramatic crash in koala populations from 1890 through to 1920.” Mr Allen noted. “A Chlamydia epidemic, plus stresses brought on by land clearing, drought and hunting which impacted on the epidemic, were the cause.” There was a huge industry in the koala skin trade during the 1890s as well and many skins were imported overseas where the demand was high. Mr Allen also explained the nature of the Regularised Grid Based Spot Assessment Technique (RGBSAT) in relation to the current koala surveys. If you would like to register your interest in becoming a volunteer, please contact the people listed below: Jindabyne Office: Mariana Lapargo, Area Administrative Assistant on 6450 5620 or email mariana.lapargo@ environment.nsw.gov.au Luke McLachlan, Ranger, Snowy River Area on 6450 5559 or email like.mclachlan@environment. nsw.gov.au Chris Allen, Koala Recovery Co-ordinator on 6495 5008 or email chris.allen@environment.nsw.gov.au Assistance is also sought to cover the reporting of any koala sightings or other observations including roadkill or otherwise dead koalas, so even if you can’t take part in the surveys, you can still play an important role in assisting with this vital collection of information.

Try your hand in the Poley Buckjump event Continued from page 2... The concept behind a Divisional Barrel Race is that all competitors’ times are split into three divisions and the fastest times in each division are the winners. This provides the opportunity for more than one winner. Competitors will be given the opportunity to have exhibition runs before and after the event to familiarize their horses with the arena or to put some final touches on their horse’s technique. Exhibition runs will be $5 each, entry into the Divisional Barrel Race will be $25 and membership (for insurance purposes) will be $30 for adults and $5 for children. Entry for spectators will be free. There will be food available and all proceeds from the events on Sunday will also be donated to Vicki. For more information go to www.coomarodeo.org.au or contact Michelle O’Neill on 0413 609 880. There has been a drop in the amount of locals competing

in the Cooma Rodeo over the past few years with many of the competitors coming from away. It is hoped that more locals participate this year, as the only criteria are a sense of adventure and a desire for adrenaline.

Trek Poley Buckjump is a chance for local horsemen and women to try their hand at showing their style in front of their home crowd with $500 prize money on offer. Entries are limited for this event and will be taken on the day at the Secretary’s Office. Competitors will be judged for the style not only in the saddle, but their ability to crack a stock whip whilst in the air. The judge’s will be two local identities Dave Freebody and Buzz Aboud. Dave is known to many as a former local who competes successfully in saddle bronc events across Australia. He will be returning to Cooma Rodeo fresh from the National Finals in Tamworth Cochran Horse Treks Poley and will also be competing in Buckjump the Ray Freebody Memorial The newest event at the Cooma Saddle Bronc at Cooma, an Rural Rodeo, the Cochran Horse event named in honour of his

late father. Buzz Aboud has been a longtime supporter of rodeo in the region. He is renowned for helping many young competitors get their start in rough stock events by providing safe training facilities and a guiding hand. Buzz’s business Bredbo Sand and Gravel has provided the sand

for the Cooma Rodeo Arena for many years. For more information on the Cooma Rural Rodeo go to the website www.coomarodeo.org. au. Pictured, the poley buckjump at Taralga Rodeo. Photo by Jensol Photography.

Ray Freebody was a well-known and respected member of the community who had a profound influence on several members of the rodeo family. He was a great influence on his son David and travelled to as many rodeos as he could to watch and support him. He became a great friend to many cowboys and cowgirls. His happy face and kind words could always be counted upon. After Ray passed away, his family decided to pay tribute to his love of the sport by creating the Ray Freebody Memorial Bronc Ride. 2011 will see the eighth year that this event has been run and it will be as hotly contested as any

Brianna Rankin blitzs all comers Young Brianna Rankin (U/8) swept all before her on our last multi-event program for the season. The first event on the night was going to be a 70m but when the results were analysed the distance was recalibrated down to a 60m event. There was only 176 points covering the field after the conclusion of the first event. Brianna Rankin (3307 points) slipped to third position with a heave of 10.19m earning her 692 points. Jonathan McDonald U/12 2748 pts * Withdrew from 300 m. Handicap Competition Over the course of the night’s competition each athlete was given a time/distance that would be

subtracted from their time over each run; example a person’s PB for the 100m is 12 seconds and the handicap time was set at 10 seconds the athlete had a handicap of two seconds. The time they recorded for the 100m on the night and minus the athletes handicap time would give you your final time. The same way in the field events but here it would be added on to their performance. After the five events on the night, Brianna Rankin won the handicap competition, Jordan Louis came in second place and Lucy Thornton third overall. Personal Best Clara Thornton (U/6) brought her tally of PB’s to 10 with three PB’s on the night. Clara slashed over four seconds off her 300m time, this translates to 13.64m ahead of her previous run. Clara boosted her shot put 69cms better than her last competition. Clara’s time for the 60m, 13.41 seconds was faster than her PB’s for both the 50m and 70m; she was travelling at 4.47 mps for the 60m. Lucy Thornton (U/7), topped the night off with five PB’s. Lucy lowered her 60m time by half a second to 11.56 seconds. At shot put Lucy keeps nudging her PB towards the 4.50 mark, this week, Lucy’s heave was 4.39m. Lucy’s third improvement, via the hurdles, flying over six hurdles and clocking 14.59 seconds for her effort. At the discus Lucy added an extra metre to her best with a toss of 7.40m. It was the 300m that Lucy cranked up her engine and roared around the track, cutting 12 seconds off her old PB to cross the finishing line in 1minute 09.56 sec. This relates to 45m improvement. Ryan Harmer (U/7), had an excellent night with three PB’s all being substantial gains. Ryan leapt out of the blocks in the 60m to knock 0.82 of a second off his previous time for the 60m. Ryan lowered his time for the 300m by just under six seconds in 1m 09.82 sec and added 91cms to his best in the shot put surpassing the five metre barrier for the first time. Ryan’s tally stands at 14 improvements for the season. Lachlan McDonald (U/7) collected four PBs on the night taking his tally to 16 Lachlan’s time over the hurdles eclipsed his old one by 1.5 seconds, while transversing the oval in the 300m run Lachlan nearly carved five seconds off when he recorded 1m 13.88 sec. Lachlan pushed his shot putt out to 4.07m to gain 2cms on to his PB. At the discus Lachlan landed his discus out to 9.53m, taking his PB out by 1.59 m. Taylah Maurier (U/8), PB in the shot put with a push of 4.91m bringing her ever so close to the 5m mark, that the barrier should be broken by the end of the season. Brianna Rankin (U/8), In both of the throws Brianna collected PB’s; the shot put where she cracked the 5m mark for the first time and added 37cms to her PB which stands at 5.08m. In the discus Brianna notched another metre to her best as she heads towards 15m mark. This week she sailed it out to 11.47m. Jordan Davis (U/8), 300m run gained him a second PB to lower his time to 62.72 sec. Other PB’s were the discus 14.35m and shot put 5.82m. Joshua McDonald (U/10), has lowered his time over the 60m hurdles at each encounter he has with them, this week he was able to reduce his time down to 13.87 sec. Liam Rankin (U/11), technique has improved over the hurdles as his time reflects solid runs of 13.00 seconds, nearly half a second improvement over his last encounter with them. Jordan Louis (U/12), As the ACT Little A’s Championships draws closer so does Jordan’s performance improve and this week it was the 60m hurdles. He lifted his hurdling technique and his time dropped. Jordan’s time this week dropped by 1.6 seconds to 12.22 seconds. Another top performance Jordan achieved on the night was 8.93m in the shot put. He needs a bit over one metre to reach the record of 9.95m. Remember: Regional Championships entries in as soon as Possible.

Monaro District Cricket results Coffeys won toss and batted. Poor shot selection by Coffeys top order ensured Salvestro ended up with a good haul of 5/37 of 9 overs. Schofield bowled with pace and accuracy (2/19 0ff 9 overs) Young mitch hynes showed plaenty of character to make 53 coming in at 8 for 79 in a well beaten coffeys side. Only two other batsmen made double figures G Taskilascus (23) and M Jordan(15). Coffeys worst bowling performance of the season where the aussie batsmen took full toll and completed a dominant victory passing coffeys score with just 4 wickets down in the 25th over. Schofield led from the front with an attacking 42, ably supported by saddler28 and Ben Shaw 52 not out. Aussie deserved their convincing win. 3 points M.Salvestro 2 points L. Schofield 1 point M. Berridale 1st innings win by 151 runs Berridale won the toss and elected to bat against the Royal team who were short of a few key players. The day started well for the Royals having Berridale in all sorts at 3-24 after seven overs. Simon Freebody (85) and Andrew O’Keeffe (45) got the Berridale innings back on track with some solid defence against some tight Royals bowling. At drinks, Berridale were 3-73 just over 3 an over, which was pretty good on a very slow, damp ground. After drinks, the Berridale pair stepped on the gas and attacked the Royal bowling and both batsmen were staring down the barrel at big scores until they both fell to Tim Lewis (3-33). The runs for Berridale continued to flow in the final few over, Hayes (14), Bruce (10) and Parkyn (8) all playing handy roles in the last overs. Berridale after 45 overs posted 195. Royals first innings never got off the

ground loosing wickets at all to regular intervals, Tim Lewis (25) looked Royals only chance of reducing the deficit and making the follow on score. Lewis was a little unlucky given out LBW just as he was settling in for a long innings. The Royals quickly folded and were all out for 44 in only the 18th over. The pick of the bowlers were J Parkyn (3-5) and Hayes (3-5). Berridale enforced the follow on and the Royals had another bat, as Berridale wanted the outright points. The Royals were a bit sturdier in defence in the second innings and placed a higher price on the wicket. Berridale had plenty of chances to take the outright win but unfortunately dropped several catches. Royals finished on 4/133. Andrew Jenkins finished with 66, batted with a bit of luck but held his nerve even with a Andrew O’Keeffe trying to remove the batsman by any means.

Time to register with the Cats

Scores come back to earth in difficult conditions Cooma golf

By Garry Atkinson and Bob Ashcroft

Snowy SuperCats Under 14s in action in 2010 – they made the finals in only their second season. The Cooma Cats and Snowy SuperCats are holding their 2011 Registration Days this Saturday (12 Feb) at Snowy Oval in Cooma and next Saturday (19 Feb) at the Station Resort Oval in Jindabyne. The Registration Days will run from 9am to 11am on both Saturdays and the Cats and SuperCats are looking for players to fill sides in Under 12s, 14s, 16s and Seniors in Season 2011. The club is also looking for supporters and officials to help run the teams. Cooma Cats Club President Dave Paterson said the club wanted to build on the success of last year where the Seniors improved their winloss ratio over previous years and the Under 14s juniors (the Snowy SuperCats) made the finals in only their second year in the competition. The Cooma Cats seniors and Snowy SuperCats juniors play in the AFL Canberra competition. Dave encouraged anyone interested in playing

AFL with the Cats or SuperCats, male and female of all ages, to come on down to the registration days in Cooma and Jindabyne to find out more. “AFL provides everyone, no matter what gender or skill level, to get on the field and take part in a fun and competitive football code,” Dave said. “Our primary focus at the Cooma Cats and Snowy SuperCats is to give anyone who wants to be involved in AFL the chance to do so. “We love our game, and we hope to see more people across the Monaro and Snowy Mountains have the chance to experience it as well,” he said. The Cooma Cats and Snowy SuperCats have already started pre-season training at Snowy Oval (Cooma) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The juniors are training at 5pm, with the seniors training at 6:30pm. Anyone interested can contact David Paterson on 0438089758 or Stuart Wood on 0422496400.

Second with 43pts was Tony Monday followed by Tony Slater on 42pts. Gordon Weston 40pts and Bill Dyball also on 40pts, both on a countback. Balls went to 37 points. Bowls pairs championships Flowing Festival action start in Cooma

There was plenty of excitement at the Cooma Bowling Club over the weekend as players competed in rounds one and two of the Club’s major pairs championship. Despite the wide variation in the temperature both days had several matches with tense finishes. The first round matches played on Saturday produced some very close play. Jim Fletcher and Ignazio Mondello played Gary Douch and Owen Russell in a game that saw only 26 shots scored over the 21 ends. Russell had the better of the early ends and led 6 – 0 after 6 ends. However, by the 13th end the scores were level at 8 all. The pattern continued with Russell moving to an advantage of 12 – 9 before mondello won the last four ends to win 14 – 12. Periods of domination also featured in the game between Giulio D’Amico and Geoff Venables and Tony Gray and Denis Steinfort. After Venables led early, Steinfort won six ends in a row to lead 10 -3. It was then Venables’ turn with a four end run see the score 10 -9. The 16th end proved critical with Venables picking up 6 shots to race to a 17 – 12 lead. Despite a brace of twos, Steinfort could not bridge the gap and Venables won 18 – 16. A great start and some clever bowls at key times gave Cobber Seears and Mark Buckley a good win over Ray Downey and John Schoon. Buckley had a dream start and led 9 – 0 after five ends. Schoon fought back and with one end to play Buckley’s lead was 18 – 16. However, on this last end both Seears and Buckley played great bowls to give them three shots and a well deserved 21 – 16 win. Ron Wainwright and Keith Goodwin combined well to outplay John Vincent and Nelson Wallace. The game was tighter than the final scores showed but on two ends Goodwin picked up 5 shots to form the basis of his 25 – 13 win. After a slow start Kim Weston and Peter Caldwell showed their experience and class in getting the better of a determined duo in Stephen Lapham and Richard Nichols. Despite winning 7 of the first 11 ends Caldwell only led 9 – 7. A pair of fives on the next two ends proved the key as Caldwell ended up winning 25 – 10. The second round matches had even more drama with four of the

six matches decided on the last end. The game between Don Jarvis and Paul Cannell and Jim Fletcher and Ignazio Mondello was played in three parts. Cannell held sway over the first seven ends to lead 7 -2. Mondello then won the next 8 ends to take a 17 – 7 lead. Cannell won the last six ends to run out 18 – 17 winners. Going into the last end Mondello still had a one shot advantage but Cannell managed the two shots needed for victory. Buckley and Seears had a great battle with Peter Longhurst and Neil McGregor. This game featured close scores and high quality bowls. The lead changed regularly and the teams were never more than four shots apart. Going into the last end McGregor was in front 18 – 17. Buckley was able to pick up two shots to win 19 – 18. Sergio Roncelli and Jack Sajina recovered from a slow start to break a dead lock with Wainwright and Goodwin on the last end. After falling behind early Sajina slowly bridged the gap but it wasn’t until the 16th end that he grabbed the lead. The last five ends were very tight with the lead changing three times. On the last end the score was 17 all. Sajina won the last end to win 18 – 17. Xin Cottam and Stumpy Wallis were forced to hang on grimly as Bob Lowe and Terry Croker stormed home. Cottam and Wallis built up a 18 – 6 lead after 16 based on some great play. Croker then started his fight back. Within four ends he had turned the game around and trailed by only 18 – 15. Wallis won the 20th end and only conceded 2 shots on the last end to run out a 19 – 17 winner. Wayne Lodge and Mel Storta, who have dominated this event in recent years, were too strong for Mario Frezza and Peter Marsicano taking out their clash 27 – 8. In the final game Chris Wallace and Artur Baumhammer combined well to get the better of Jock Davidson and Peter Harris by 23 – 12. The quarter finals of the major pairs will be played on February 20 as the district singles will be played next week. The district singles will be played at Adaminaby with all draws at all clubs. Layers who have a bye on Saturday morning are reminded that they are required to be present to mark games.

Last year’s Dress-Up Winner, Tyrolean, has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged allcomers to out-dress-up and if possible, outpaddle them over 200 metres. Tyrolean has issued specific challenges to the inhabitants of the Alpine Way and the East Jindabyne Residents (JERCS) and Lakewood. Tyrolean, cocky to the last item of clothing, was beaten on the water by the scary and menacing crew Laricans, who have announced their intention of revenge. It’s not too late to enter! Cooma, Berridale, Dalgety, Adaminaby! Come to Lake Jindabyne for the day and just be prepared to get wet! Enter your team on line WWW.FLOWINGFESTIVAL. COM.AU ORcall Robyn for more information 0410 016 587. The Love Boat crew was unlucky last year, and the SMGS P & F crew should be looking to dress up in more than school uniform to take the prize. The SMGS P & F are looking to challenge the Jindabyne Central P & F, and the Monaro High P & F if they are game!! Community Teams are the heartbeat of the Festival, and this year a percentage of their entry forms is going directly to Cystic Fibrosis NSW. Festival organiser Jo Davis said the host club Lake Jindabyne Snow Dragons were inspired by young local Conner Rae, who lives with CF and has probably the biggest smile in the town. Conner will drum for the local club, and sister Chelsea is part of the junior Snow Dragons/SMGS crew. The closing date for entries is getting closer go to www.flowingfestival.com and follow the prompts to Community teams, and take on the challenge. The distance is a mere 200 metres, but there is plenty of time for strategy, strength and power to humiliate the opposition. The rumour mill has been working over time as crews prepare their dress up for the day. It is believed that there will be an endangered species

crew - costumes are apparently already well into their final phase and should by all accounts set a new standard in classy dress-up. Commonwealth Bank have vowed to return with a top speed higher than interest rates, and although Skye is off to Canada, the whichbank crew is a hot favourite. Lake Crackenback Resort is already in training, with rosters re-set to get their best on the water. They are taking hardware specialists from Mitre 10 into their crew, but their dress-up remains a closely guarded secret. Snowy River Shire Council staff will be led by ironman Neil Messinbird, who takes no prisoners with punishing training regimes. The Community Teams can practice on Saturday under the guidance of Dragon Boat NSW coaches, and these teams will get their practice times sent to them closer to the event. The Mountain Challenge category is designed for the resorts to strut their stuff - Perisher, Thredbo (Resort), Thredbo Thunder (trophy winners for the past three years and still to confirm whether they will defend their title) and Charlotte Pass also dress up in more than corporate gear. These industry giants see the dragon boats as a part of their long-standing competition with each other, and the Flowing Festival offers another grudge-match opportunity. This year’s Flowing Festival has a great night time draw card - Jindabyne Central School’s Starlight Cinema is presenting The Man From Snowy River under the stars at Banjo Paterson Park, with a barbeque, drinks, prizes and fun for all. BYO is permitted. The carnival will be on as well, don’t miss your yearly spin on the Cha Cha, and there will be mystery balloon and chocolate wheel competitions. Starlight Cinema Tickets for the movie - Family $20, Adults $7.50, Kids $2.50. See you at the Flowing Festival! Make up a team and be prepared to get wet! Listen to 2XL and SnowFM for information about the Festival.

Cooma Ladies Golf Excellent scores were recorded last Wednesday in the fourth round of the Midge Theron Trophy. Marilynne Weston played a fantastic game to win with 21 points. Alice Duczynski also enjoyed a return to form with some well placed shots to end up the runner-up with 19 points. Balls were won by Lyn Last, 18 points, Midge Theron and Clare Nowland, both 17 points. On Saturday in the final round of The Mack’s Auto Trophy Jenny Brown set the course alight in the pouring rain with brilliant play. Her game was on song with her drives and fairway play a stand-out! She ended up with 23 points. Congratulations! The runner-up

Coming up: Wed, 9th – 9 hole stableford Midge Theron Trophy; Sat, 12th – Ex-Services Club Snowy Mountains AM Tournament; Sun, 13th – 9 hole stableford. See you on the course!

Cooma Tigers head coach, Gabriel Wilk recently travelled to his home country, Argentina, with the aim of visiting family and friends. Considering this year’s football season Gaby spent most of his time observing football games and training sessions as well as holding several discussions with high level coaches (ex team mates) to develop his knowledge of the game he loves and to better the Cooma Tigers Club. Gaby also travelled to Chile, accepting an invitation from the Estrella Solitaria Football Club from Batuco, Municipal of Lampa, Santiago. The invitation was made through the Vice President of the Australian National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters Council, Victor Marillanca. On his visit, Gaby’s aim was to create a professional relationship with this club to better Australian football. Gabby spent a full day viewing several football games with players ranging from under 10s through to under 18s and the top two first grade teams of the area, with the hope of finding someone suitable to wear the Tiger’s yellow and black jersey for the upcoming men’s Primer League Football Season. Gaby was received by the Minister of
