In 2009 the Dalgety Show was called the “Send ’er down Huey, drought buster show”.

Unfortunately Huey didn’t get the message until the following year, at about 6pm, Sunday March 7, 2010.

Did the Dalgety Show committee give a hoot? Not on your Nellie. As a matter of fact, they looked to the skies and gave a silent thanks to good ol’ Huey for busting the drought, But they also thanked Huey profusely for waiting until the 2010 Dalgety Show was done and dusted, to send down the rain.

Yes folks, after a short, sharp shower of rain around 11am on show morning, the weather was perfect for a very successful 2010 Dalgety Show.

After a tentative start in the morning the crowds started to flock to the show and what a day of fantastic fun they had.

Each year, locals are featured on the covers of the Yellow Pages® and White Pages® directories in recognition of the contributions they make to their communities.

Under the theme C o u r a g e o u s Australians, this year directories producer, Sensis, is recognising courageous people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to overcome adversity and help others in their time of need.

After receiving nominations from community members for the annual honour, Cooma resident, Susan Peters-Smith has been selected to appear on the cover of this year’s Cooma directory which is distributed to Berridale, Bombala, Cooma, Jindabyne and Snowy Mountains.

Susan Peters-Smith has battled nonHodgkins lymphoma leukaemia for 11 years and through her own

fight with the cancer knows first-hand the value of having a local cancer support network.

Now in postremission, Susan is passionate about being the facilitator of the Cooma ‘Look Good Feel Better’ cancer workshops.

These sessions help members enhance their appearance and self esteem by teaching them beauty techniques to mask the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. She has also raised funds for the ACT Eden Monaro Cancer support group which helps local cancer patients with vouchers for fuel, food, medication and counselling.

“It’s so important when you’re battling through cancer to maintain a positive outlook on life, and what ‘Look Good Feel Better’ does is exactly that. It helps cancer victims

become more positive about their future and it’s something I’m very proud to be a part of,” Susan said.

Susan’s courage extends beyond her commitment to other cancer sufferers. When she was a volunteer SES member for Cooma, her unit was the first rescue team at the scene of a fatal road accident on the same weekend as the Thredbo landslide disaster. As the only qualified SES member at the accident and with no time to wait for backup, Susan cut the man from the car wreckage, ultimately saving his life.

“Australians are known for their compassion and willingness to put their hand up to help when it’s needed most.

Coalition funding promise for Snowy-Monaro BEC Shadow Minister for Small Business Don Page and Nationals duty MP for Monaro, Melinda Pavey visited the Snowy-Monaro BEC to meet board members and discuss funding issues last Thursday.

BEC chairman Sid Downey, gave the politicians a rundown on the achievements of the BEC over the last 17 years, detailing how a lack of government funding from 2004 had eroded the centre’s ability to service clients.

Mr Downey explained how funding from Cooma-Monaro Shire council in the last 18 months had at least allowed the centre’s business incubator service to keep functioning, although the centre had lost its business advisor due to a lack of funds.

Mr Downey said the BEC had devised a plan by which it could become financially selfsufficient, but this was in jeopardy because the business manager had also been the trainer who would have played a pivotal role in the process.

Mr Downey also told Mr Page and Mrs Pavey how the exisiting mobile business advisory centre, from Queanbeyan, had not been well-received because it does not extend beyond Cooma. This means businesses from Bombala, Jindabyne and the mountains need to travel at least to Cooma or, more likely, Queanbeyan, to access

services which were previously available in Cooma.

The point was made at the meeting that most small businesses cannot afford the time to travel to Queanbeyan for business advice and many will not use a telephone or internet service because they prefer face-to-face meetings.

Cooma Unlimited, whose executive also attended the meeting, is delighted with the outcome when Mr Page promised, if elected, Government funding for the BEC. Cooma Unlimited chairman, Duglad Mitchell, told the meeting economic development in the region to achieve

population growth is essential.

He said all economic activity and government services are dependant on population counts. Real Estate prices depend upon demand from new settlers.

“There are three major activity areas of the 2700 odd small businesses in the Snowy Monaro region. They are the farm sector, the tourist sector and the retail and professional area. Of these we think that tourism is the growth area.

“We must as a regional community encourage the growth of tourism. We need a well run Business Enterprise Centre to help small business tourist business over the hump of establishment and

Choices for our young people Dalgety Show Rural Achiever Our district has the opportunity of introducing to our young people in the first years of high school a workshop that is now presented to over 100 000 young Australians each year in both Government and non-Government schools.

Choices, Decisions, Outcomes, this is an innovative values based education program encouraging young people to make healthy lifestyle choices regarding their relationships and developing sexuality.

Trained volunteer presenters offer a 90-minute workshop in each of the first four years of high school.

Other offerings for parents and children of primary age are under development.

An information session about CDO, will be held Wednesday March 17, 1pm-2.30pm, at the St Patrick’s Catholic Parish Centre, Cooma.

Regional Co-ordinator, Mrs Catherine Cooney from Canberra will present the information session and all interested can view the materials and ask questions.

Small Business Survey Member for EdenMonaro, Mike Kelly is encouraging local small businesses owners to participate in his 2010 small business survey.

The survey provides an opportunity for local business owners to let Mike know what their concerns are and what they see as the top local issues facing them.

Dr Kelly said: “I think it’s essential to maintain a good channel of communication with local business owners because after all, small business is the engine room of our economy and their success affects us all.”

“The feedback received from the Small Business Surveys will be used

to help me identify the priorities in our business community and the help the Rudd Government implement policies that help business in our area,” Dr Kelly said.

Australia Post will be delivering the survey to all businesses in EdenMonaro this week.

The judges said they had a very hard task deciding who was to be the winner of the Rural Achiever Award.

They commented that all the candidates were “just wonderful and really inspiring young people“.

“They are all so committed to country life and their community, and they are all potential leaders.

“We were blown away by the quality of these young people,” they said.

Tim, who is 26 years old, is a dedicated horseman with his own successful equestrian business called Snowy Mountains Performance Horses.

Over the past few years, Tim has been the ring announcer at many country shows, including the Royal National Agricultural Show of Queensland (the Ekka).

Tim was the ring announcer at the Dalgety Show held last Sunday. Tim is also the promoter of the very successful Snowy Mountains Showjump Festival held over five days in January at the Cooma Showground.

As the judges said, “with young people such as these in the Snowy River Shire, our future is assured”.

Firey ladies celebrated NSW Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan has acknowledged the valuable role women play in the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), as part of International Women’s Day. Mr Whan said women make up a significant proportion of both volunteer and salaried positions in the Service with new resources being developed to further enhance their role.

“International Women’s Day is about celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women and recognising their

achievements.

“The RFS has more than 70,000 members, each committed to protecting their communities; 21 per cent of these are women.

“Furthermore, 35 per cent of the Rural Fire Service’s staff is made up of women, with 18 per cent of those also volunteers.

“Women fulfil a number of important roles from frontline firefighting and support to senior management and executive level”, Mr Whan said.

Cleaning up our bit of Australia Clean Up Australia Day celebrated its 20th national anniversary on Sunday, as clean up crews around the region set to work.

Twenty years ago, Ian Kiernan

launched the event around Australia urging people to make a difference by cleaning up their local areas for a couple of hours.

Since then, his simple idea has evolved to be Australia’s largest

community-based environmental event. In 2009 alone, almost 630,000 volunteers participated and 7,000 sites were registered for Clean Up Australia Day.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has erected a banner celebrartng Cooma’s Olympic gold medallist, Torah Bright.

After weeks of preparation and negotiations with Torah Bright’s agent and sponsors, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council was finally able to display a banner and posters to congratulate Torah on her gold medal win and our other local Olympians who competed at the recent 2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver.

Council’s general manager John Vucic said “our council has been working very hard behind the scenes to organise congratulatory messages and show our local Olympians just how proud our community is of them in the form of a banner and posters.

“Copyright issues and permissions to use images had to be obtained which have contributed to the holdup.

“It has been a tedious task for our staff

coordinating responses due to time differences between Australia and the USA where Torah’s agent and sponsors are.

“We have also been trying to arrange a date for celebrations to be held in the town including a Civic Reception and because Torah has become a celebrity overnight, we’ve taken our place in the queue.

“Indications have been given that we should receive a date very shortly so the planning can begin in earnest.”

“Cooma will receive lots of publicity as a result of what is planned for the celebrations and will be in the spotlight so it’s important that we get it right for our town and region”, he said.

Thieves target The Hub The Hub Youth Centre was the victim of a break in sometime between Thursday night and Monday morning.

Staff were greeted with a large mess, and three missing computers.

Upon further investigation it was discovered that the vacuum cleaner, camera and a portable CD player had also been stolen.

The thieves had ransacked the drawers of the office looking for anything of value and probably the keys to the safe as well. ”It was obvious that whoever broke in knew exactly what they were looking for.

“The computers that were stolen were new and have been programmed to operate only

in the Hub, so they really are of no use to anybody else,” youth project officer, Paula Hovey, said.

“The Hub will still be able to function but at a reduced pace, as the computers were the main things used in the centre, predominantly for résumé’s or look things up.

“It really is disgusting that this has happened.

Hayley fought long and hard to get funding for those computers and they are for the youth of Cooma to use“ Paula said.

If anyone has information or hears anything about the break in please contact Cooma police.

Cooma’s dance stars met their partners at a launch night at Cooma Ex-Services Club last Tuesday.

Cooma’s dancing ‘stars’ have already proven so popular, they have been booked for an encore performance before the show starts.

The “Dancing with Cooma stars” function, originally set for one gala perfomance on May 29, will now also be held on Friday May 28 to accommodate the number of people who indicated they would attend this black-tie fundraiser.

“Dancing with the stars” is an initiative of the Monaro Committee of Cancer Research and money raised will go toward cancer services on the Monaro.

Committee welcomes renewed consultation over waste dispute The Eucumbene Waste Transfer Station Committee has welcomed the announcement

by Snowy River Shire Council via the General Manager on March 4 that “Snowy River Shire Council will continue to investigate alternative cost effective waste services for Eucumbene and Rocky Plain in consultation with the Working Group over the coming months”.

The gathering of a wide cross section of community representatives from the Shire at Snowy River Shire Council’s ordinary meeting on February 16 publicly requested Council to recommence discussions with community representatives to address the provision of adequate waste services for the Eucumbene and Rocky Plain communities.

Last Wednesday Cooma’s Breast Care nurse, Bronnie Taylor received a visit from the McGrath Foundations Michaela Durrant.

The Foundation visits their nurses in rural and regional Australia once a year to meet them and their local health services, as well as to gain a feel for the community.

There are 53 Breast Care nurses nationally with the Monaro/Far South coast region having one each in Cooma, Bega, Moruya and Canberra.

The McGrath Foundation funds these nurses’ positions through Federal grants, Government and corporate donations as well as community fundraising.

This enables these nurses to help women in their local communities with breast cancer, whether it be home based support or, in the oncology unit. It

Cooma Anzac weekend concert: A Soldier’s Tale Editor, Cooma Ex-Serviceman’s Club will host an internationally renowned soloist, and some of Australia’s finest brass players in a remarkable Anzac themed concert on Saturday April 24, Anzac Eve. They will perform “The Glass Soldier”.

“The Glass Soldier” will comprise the second half of an Anzac Eve concert to take place on Saturday April 24 at the Cooma Ex-Services Club, 6.30 pm for a start right on 7 pm.

The first half will comprise services themed music.

Members of the Villers-Bretonneux Band will be joined by present and former members of Willoughby Brass Band (a State a National A grade winning band), who are coming to Cooma for a reunion that weekend, Cooma District Band, instrumentalists from all over the Monaro, the Cooma Harmony Chorus, and singers from Monaro schools.

The first half will include a beautiful hymn setting of “They Shall Grow Not Old” which will be sung by Cooma Harmony Chorus, singers from Monaro schools, and others who obtain the music and attend the open rehearsal. The audience will join in singing the traditional Anzac Day hymn “The Recessional”. “Damn Busters March” will be an instrumental highlight.

Anyone who plays an instrument or sings is welcome to join the first half, and should contact Chris Wall on 02 6452 1488, or email chris@coomalaw.com.au. Music can then be prepared for collection by players and by singers to be practiced, and there will be an “open rehearsal” between about 3.30 and 5pm on Saturday April 24.

Tickets will be sold at Walker Gibbs & King, Cooma ExServiceman’s Club, the Visitors Centre and the Fabric Salon.

Admission will be $15 for adults, and $5 for service people, ex-service people, those under 16 and pensioners.

Those funds will be used to pay for the music, and provide travel and accommodation assistance for the musicians and the narrator, who as professionals are coming from Melbourne and Sydney to donate their time and skills to this remarkable performance.

It will be a first for Cooma – only the third full performance, and the first one outside of Melbourne.

The way the weather has been on the Monaro lately, perhaps Aeropelican should look at bringing in a float plane to service our region?

It may have been a year late, but the prediction of the Dalgety Show Society in February 2009 seems to have rung true- finally.

In 2009 the show had the theme “Bring her Down Huey”, the drought-breaking show.

While there weren’t any flooding rains obvious last year, this year was a different story.

All The Postman can guess is, the Dalgetyites have a strong

connection with someone upstairs, otherwise the rain would not have politely waited until AFTER the show to come tumbling down.

But, all things being equal, the rain can hold off now until Sunday, otherwise the 2010 Cooma Show might prove to be

a drought-breaker.

It’s a bit ironic that Cooma Show had to cancel its hoof and hook classes because of the drought, isn’t it?

Congratulations to Bev Alcock for her success in the NSW Showgirl competition regional judging.

And a big ‘well done’ to Cooma’s entrant, Kayla Dyson, who conducted herself with poise and grace at the regional judging last Saturday.

SRF clarifications

Nostalgia won’t pay the bills Editor, There has been some debate about the relocation of the Snowy River Festival to a new venue. On behalf of the Snowy River Festival Management Committee, I would like to emphasise a few key points that were considered, prior to adopting the logical decision to relocate.

The Festival has been running for six years and has enjoyed steady growth in terms of visitation, number of entrants, number of events and the number of stall holders.

With this growth came extra running costs and infrastructure requirements.

Although the picturesque town of

Dalgety provides a great backdrop for the festival, the town’s facilities and those of the showground can no longer provide the facilities needed to produce a public event of such high calibre.

The event has simply outgrown Dalgety. It is time for a serious look at the direction and future of the event.

Public liability, security, entertainment, amenities and marketing requires a primary working budget of about $100,000. Despite enjoying strong business support from some 90 sponsors this amount is hard to cover from sponsorships.

In recent years, thankfully one local businessman has generously cash-flowed the event to ensure its survival. This can’t This is a MUST SEE continue hence the need for the committee to reassess the 2007 RAV 4 CV Wagon financial viability of the event.

Management Committee feels that it would be reckless to continue running the event at the Dalgety venue. Dalgety has capacity for a one-day event but not for a three-day event.

In addition to the provision of security for the event the Management Committee has become the de facto provider of security for the whole weekend. The Committee has been ordered to increase the amount of security for the next event.

Other issues such as limited visitor accommodation, lack of areas for competitors to practice and camp, lack of display and stall areas, limited mobile coverage, lack of transport options, and limited public amenities were all considered.

The committee appreciates the support the Dalgety community and businesses have injected into the event over the years. Events such as these need volunteer and community support to be successful.

The Management Committee understands and shares the sentiment and sense of loss the Dalgety people have. However, the liability and duty of care together with the threat of further financial losses dictates that there must be change. Unfortunately nostalgia will not pay bills nor mend injury.

Editor, It would appear from recent correspondence to your paper that there is some confusion as to the composition and functions of the Snowy River Festival Incorporated.

There is no “Committee at large”.

The body is set up as an incorporated body under the rules laid down by the NSW Office of Fair Trading. The rules are available on their website. Under the rules the organization is known as “The Snowy River Festival Incorporated.”

A Committee of Management must be elected each year at an annual General Meeting of financial members. The Powers and functions of that committee are set out under Section 3 of those Model Rules laid down by the Office of Fair Trading.

It also states that The Management Committee may call a meeting of the Management Committee at 48 hours notice or such period as may be unanimously agreed to by the Committee.

There was a point of order raised about a 21 day notice but the above section of the Office Of Fair Trading Rules called for 48 hours and the meeting went forward under those Rules. The committee cannot “Enact a Clause”.

The meeting of the Management Committee was called prior to the second Meeting at Dalgety.

There are 21 paid up members of the Snowy River Festival as I write and anyone can fill out a form as prescribed by the Office Of Fair Trading and join by paying the current fee of $5 and have a vote at the AGM or at any General Meeting that may be called.

I trust that I may have made a few matters clear.

Worst luck I can’t ease the loss that Dalgety feels but in time people will come to see that logic had to prevail over emotion.

INVITATION TO OLD COOMA COMMON WORKING BEE A volunteer working bee to control weeds on Old Cooma Common Grassland Reserve (also known as Radio Hill), will be conducted on Saturday 20 March 2010. COUNCIL AT THE SHOW Council will once again hold a display at the P & A Association’s Cooma Show and some main features this year will be: 1. The savewater! Mobile Display Trailer. The display features water efficient products which include a water tank, washing machine, Caroma profile dual flush toilet with hand basin – the hand basin forms the top of the cistern and when emptied the water flows into the cistern to be reused when the toilet is flushed, a showerhead display comparison, a natural water cycle display and TV screen.

2. Visitors will have access to the Savewater! site where they will find information on water saving products, competitions to enter for great prizes; and be able to play the Mission H20 water saving game which involves players in ways to save water in areas such as the home, garden, school, business and on the farm. By clicking on the ‘Local Information’ tab on the home page, students will have access to the Shires water supply and usage, water restrictions, rebates and other local information.

3. Sample bags featuring water saving information, colour-in storybook (Discover Ways to Save Water) and colouring pencils for the children.

4. NSW Government Greywater Use packages.

5. Protect you and your children with our free sunscreen.

6. Shire Rural Road Maps – valued at $15 each – will be given away to the first 50 visitors to our display.

7. The Roadside Weed Spraying Program will be on display.

8. Council’s Waterwise Plants Suitable for Cooma-Monaro booklet which includes the Preferred Ornamental Tree Species list.

9. Resource and Waste staff will be on hand for advice and information on recycling and waste collection in the Shire and will have show bags (re-usable car litter bag) with a few surprises inside, to give away.

12. Council’s Noxious Weed Management Services will have their Weeds Mobil Display which features a computer and monitor for visual displays.

15. Cooma Library will have on display plans of the upgrade to the library building and giveaways, as well as information about the move to the temporary premises.

KIDS SAVING WATER Council in association with the SaveWater Alliance is spreading the message of the necessity to conserve water. Council staff with the SaveWater trailer, will be visiting infants and primary schools this week and next to promote water conservation. THE NEW LOOK COOMA EX-SERVICES CLUB Cooma Ex-Services Club reno’s stage two The Cooma Ex-Services Club has begun stage two of its revamp.

Monday saw the commencement of the renovations to the foyer and reception region, along with the main bar area.

Patrons will still be able to use the front door to access the club throughout the renovation process, as the management is anticipating disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

Stockl are the project managers on the job as well as designing the refurbishment.

They are working in conjunction with local trades people to make the entire project come together as quickly and efficiently as possible with a minimum of disruption to patrons at the club.

The new areas will be in keeping with the new look front of the club, which was also designed by Stockl.

The refurbishment is estimated to take three weeks to complete then you will be able to enjoy a new bar top and front, along with new fixtures and fittings.

The reception area will also get a facelift with new fixtures and fittings and a whole new look.

She said inspiration for the design was trying to keep some of the intregity of building.

There is some fairly retro influences in the building, but we wanted it to be a fairly neutral palette so it can be easly renovated later.

“We also wanted to divide it into more intimate areas to appeal to different types of clients. For instance, there is the Memorabilia lounger, which foscusses on the history of the club. Further down the bar it becomes a bit more ‘hip’.

“We also tried get some texture in there and use local hardwood and wrought-iron partitions which will depict the Monaro.

“We tried to get lots of little interesting things to aid visual stimulation.

“We have tried to modernise it in a way it becomes timeless so that it has a neutral basis which can easily be updated in the future. It’s a modern, clean environment”, Jeannine said.

The management and staff of the Cooma Ex-Services Club are pleased with plans for the newest makeover.

Club Secretary Manager Kade Morrell said “The Club is aiming to attract a broader market as well as improve facilities for our members.”

“The changes are quite exciting for us and we encourage everyone to come and have a look when they are completed.”

“With our 60th Anniversary approaching what better way to celebrate than giving our members brand new facilities to enjoy.”

“Hopefully more changes will follow later in the year which will complete the project, giving us a fresh new look.”

Club President Doug O’Donnell said " The Committee and management of the Club look forward to the improvements ,which the proposed renovations will bring to club members' facilities ,and the modern surroundings in which everyone will be able to enjoy visits to their club, in member friendly areas."

Club Vice President Col Cook has also welcomed the new design saying, “we wanted to create a better ambience, friendly atmosphere and bring the club into the future.”

They competed against 200 entrants. Rebecca thought it a great way to meet up with people as she only moved to the area twelve months ago to take up a position with Industry and Investment NSW as an Agronomist and Mat tells us he was “talked into it” by mates and got a surprise when he won!

Riposte Lisa Ashurst Does anyone remember when public holidays were just that? You know, everything was closed except for maybe the little corner store that stayed open for a few hours, just in case you ran out of bread or milk. Well it was like that once apparently. No one worked on a public holiday except for skeleton crews on public transport systems that ran to a holiday timetable anyway.

Shops used to close around 5 - 5.30pm on weekdays and 12 noon on Saturdays and everyone had Sundays off.

No one seemed to mind that all the big stores were closed and no one was any the worse off as a result. Then along came Thursday late-night shopping where everything stayed open til 9pm, which was a good idea and not too long after, trading hours stretched to take in Saturday afternoons as well. But everyone still had Sundays and public holidays off to relax and catch up with each other and it worked out just fine.

But over time, store hours have become longer and other than Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, many stores are managing to stay open

pretty much all year round which brings to mind the major retailer who is pushing to open its doors to shoppers in the morning on Anzac Day. At the moment, stores have to keep their doors closed until 1pm on this particular holiday but my question is this...why do retailers have to trade at all on Anzac Day? In fact, why do retailers have to be open for trade on any public holiday? Are shoppers really so selfish and demanding?

There’s something wrong with our society if people can’t go 24 hours without entering a shopping centre and for that matter, supermarkets really don’t need to be open 24/7 either. If everyone managed once upon a time to get through a Saturday afternoon and a whole Sunday without access to a shop and not drop down dead as a result, then it’s possible to do it today.

The request to trade all day on Anzac day is in bad taste in my opinion, as of all the public holidays in the year, Anzac Day would have to be the most significant and somehow I just can’t justify the need for anyone to feel they just have to hit the shops. I mean, we’re talking one day here. Have a little respect for the occasion and give the credit cards a break!

It’s a bit like the pubs. There was a time when they closed at 6pm and people got home sober in time for dinner and some time together, but now pubs stay open until very late.

Jill Murdoch Monaro Woman of the Year Member for Monaro Steve Whan has announced Jill Murdoch as the 2010 Monaro Woman of the Year.

Jill Murdoch is a palliative care clinical nurse specialist at Cooma Health Service working in community nursing.

She provides care and support to patients and their families facing problems associated with a life-threatening illness and ongoing support for families who lose a loved one.

Jill also runs a support group in the hospital, providing cancer sufferers and carers with assistance in coming to terms with the implications of the illness and overcoming many dayto-day problems.

Jill and her husband Colin have three daughters and live on the family property at Ando. She has worked for Cooma Health Service since 1989 and was appointed to the position in palliative care in 1999. “I am proud to award the 2010 Monaro Woman of the Year to Jill, who is an everyday hero who gives so much to those in need. “Jill works hard behind the scenes and goes above and beyond the call of duty to help those needing palliative care at the hospital. “Jill is so well respected by patients, friends, family and the wider community that she received eight nominations for this award!

Mr Whan will present Jill Murdoch with a certificate as well as a $100 cheque to be given to a local charity of her choice.

Last year’s competition runner up, Katrina Nichols did an excellent job in interviewing the girls prior to announcing Beverley as winner.

It is well worth noting that Beverley is the third girl in four years that Nimmitabel Show will be represented by in the land competition at the Sydney show.

The Cooma Showground is looking refreshed after a long dry spell and the scene is set for a great day out for the whole family.

A strong field of axemen have entered for the Cooma ExServices Club Woodchop Challenge for the 2010 Cooma Show.

Feature events will include the 225mm Standing Block Championship, the 300mm Underhand for Open Division, the three board tree event and a team event featuring 24 axemen competing in two relay teams. A number of the competitors will use Cooma as training for the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

A great family day out Sheep section The Sheep head steward, Charles Keighley, would like all competitors to please have their sheep penned at the showground no later than 8am on Saturday.

All competitors will have to complete OJD and footrot declaration forms prior to exhibiting their sheep.

The sheep section will have classes for stud as well as commercial merinos, as well as Border Leicester and Dorset sheep.

Coloured sheep also have classes to contest, as well as coloured fleece.

There will also be a local junior sheep judging competition, for participants under 25 years of age.

Goat section Cashmere and Angora goats are well catered for at this year’s show.

The goat section also includes classes for fleeces, for kids, does and bucks.

Head steward Christine Parkes would like to see increased numbers entered this year.

The scarecrows must be delivered to Cooma Showground between 10am and 11am on Saturday.

Judging will begin at 12 and scarecrows can be collected after 5pm.

Yard dogs Yard dogs will again be a feature of the show.

The competition will run throughout the day, with good entries expected in all classes.

Yard dogs classes give an inside into the worth of working dogs as they move sheep through a number of obstacles.

Kayla is Cooma’s Showgirl

Junior vegetable judges at Cooma

Cooma’s 2010 showgirl, Kayla Dyson, is pictured with 2009 Showgirl, Libby Goggin Local girl Kayla Dyson has been selected as Cooma’s 2010 showgirl.

Kayla is 21 years old, and finished school at Monaro High. She has continued her education since then, completing certificates in business administration and retail hospitality and tourism, and currently works locally as an admin assistant.

Kayla is an active community member, being selected as the Young Person Representative for Monaro Bombala work place learning program Inc.

She is also busy with sports, enjoying Snowboarding, wakeboarding, swimming and the gym.

Kayla has ambitions to continually develop herself, promote the Snowy region and work towards improving opportunities for locals.

By being the Cooma Showgirl for 2010, she believes she can help to promote the Snowy region, as well as improve her public speaking skills, meet new people and have fun.

Cooma Show will host the them with their trip to Sydney.

Ribbons will be awarded to regional finals of the junior judging for fruit and vegetables the first three placegetters in each class. on March 13.

From P25 Poultry This year’s Cooma Show offers 120 classes, including a junior section, for keen poultry breeders.

Head stewards Janette Langwill and Margaret Denley need entries to be received no later than 9am on Saturday morning. The presentation will take place at 3pm in the poultry pavilion.

Horse Section The horse arena at the 135th at The Westpac Cooma Show will run well into the late afternoon again this year.

From 8.30am on Saturday the saddle horse ring will once again be strongly supported by quality local riders and horse in the District events. Then the open classes commence and are strongly supported by competitors from the South Coast and ACT, as well as our local competitors.

In the afternoon ring 1 will feature the talented Arabian horses as well as the pony classes and junior riding classes.

Ring 2 & 3 will feature the Galloways and Hack respectively, followed by the breed horses & ponies. These

classes are well contended by the talented young riders on the Monaro who are continuing to achieve fantastic results at local and state level. Take the opportunity to sit and watch these talented young riders.

Alpine Ford is the proud sponsor the Pony Club events which this year we are running during the lunch break of rings 1 & 2. Take the time to sit and watch the up and coming riders of the future, as they proudly wear their Pony Club uniforms and represent their clubs. Alpine Ford continues to strongly support the horse section at the Country Energy Cooma show and junior riders on the Monaro.

We have had fantastic support from all Breed associations and are will have a range of different breeds on show in the afternoon. Ranging from the miniature horses and ponies, through to appaloosas, paints and pintos.

The George Holden Memorial Trophy is a special event, which has been held for many years at the show, and this year will be not exception. This event is for residents of the Cooma – Monaro, Snowy River and Bombala Shires who are under the age of 17years and have not placed at a Royal Show.

The Supreme Saddle Horse of the Show, which is being announced at the official opening, is also proudly sponsored by Country Energy. There will be a spectacular line up of horses including the Champion Pony, Galloway, Hack and the Champion Show Hunter Pony, Galloway and Hack. The Showjumping ring starts at 9.00am with our D grade events, and will continue to run non stop through out the day.

Again this year the course builder will be Brad Longhurst from Murrambateman, who enjoys coming to Cooma to build courses for the competitiors and also the crowd who get such a fantastic view of the showjumping. Bridget Cross is a very respected judge on the showjumping circuit and will be judging again. Brad will be bringing extra jumping props and apparatus to make the courses more challenging for the riders and interesting for the spectators.

A highlight in the jumping arena will be the Country Energy A,B & C Grade Grandprix and the Boyce Chartered Accountants Open Six Bar, due to the generous sponsorship of these two businesses we have been able to offer very attractive prize money, which in turn will attracts these top showjumping riders.

The rain came after the show Continued from page 1...

Spotted among the throng were many family groups; Mum pushing the stroller and Dad running after the older kids as they darted from one attraction to another, such as the Patting Paddock, the merry-go-rounds and the jumping castles.

The teenage contingent was out in force too, enjoying the mechanical bull ride, the gold panning tent, the Teams Challenge and the very popular Tug’o’War event.

The backbone of the Monaro, the more mature people, making their annual pilgrimage to the Dalgety Show, came and caught up with old friends and simply enjoyed the spectacle.

As usual, the horse events and the yard dog trials were

great crowd pleasers and the wood chopping arena attracted a big audience eager to see how wood chopping should be done.

The “Show us your Hat” novelty event drew some wonderful innovative ideas with some great hats made by the school kids of the district.

In the Pavilion, the art and crafts were mind blowing and the photography section accentuated the talent on the Monaro.

And what a bumper year it was for the flower, condiments and vegetable sections.

There were more pumpkins on display than even Cinderella could cope with and the flowers were a riot of colour.

The school children did themselves proud. Did you see the wonderful stone huts the children had made? There’s some

budding architects and builders in that lot.

Over in the Dalgety Hall, a constant stream of visitors oohed and aahed at the beautiful quilts, some visitors coming as far as the Central Coast, Canberra and the South Coast just to view the quilt exhibition.

The needlework and the knitting on display was, as usual, a joy to see Was the Dalgety Show, the only show in the Snowy River Shire, another wonderful success? Too right!

And was the hard working show committee chuffed that Huey held the rain off until 6pm when most people had packed up and headed for home? You bet!

If you didn’t get to the “Show us your Hat” Dalgety Show, bad luck. Don’t forget next year; the first Sunday in March 2011.

Top farming award

Wethers make $111, lambs $140 at Cooma sale Wethers reached an all-time high price at the March 1 Cooma sheep sale.

A pen of 107 extra heavy wethers, offered by BJ & L Tozer, through Bill Wilkinson Agencies, sold for $111.

A second pen offered by the same vendor sold for $99.

The yarding included 2000 lambs and 8000 sheep and attracted all regular buyers.

Competition was very strong across all grades.

Well-finished heavy crossbred lambs made to $140 with most trade lambs from $98 to $115.

The store lambs were once again very sought after, making from $75 to $90.

Ewes followed the same trend, making $100.

The lighter sheep were also strongly contested with most selling from $50 to $70.

Restocker sheep were in great demand, with most going to local buyers.

The next Cooma sale is on March 15.

Small yarding, strong support Cooma Associated Agents yarded and sold 100 scale cattle and 180 store cattle 280 at last Thursday’s cattle sale.

Scale cattle were firm to five cents per kg dearer, store cattle were $20 to $40 dearer.

Merino weaners are challenging animals for stock owners. Even cross-breds will sometimes present with scours – diarrhoea, daggy bottoms and sometimes, deaths.

Recent investigations have revealed about five different causes or contributing factors for weaner scours, many of them coexisting in the same mob, making this issue a tricky problem to deal with.

There are things that make sheep scour, but don’t necessarily make them sick. Fresh, green feed is one, selenium deficiency another. Recent blood tests on three properties have shown surprisingly low selenium levels, given that this element is usually more deficient in good seasons with lots of clover.

Another cause of scours is a worm called Nematodirus or Thin-Necked Intestinal worm. It has a distinctive, large egg, which is tougher than the eggs of most other worms. These eggs survive the dry times and are then ready to hatch as soon as there is enough rain.

The damage is limited to young sheep in this area, because most adults have been exposed to this worm in the past and have strong immunity to them.

Our dry spring and summer have really reduced the numbers of Black Scour and Brown Stomach worms on most properties. Don’t ignore the possibility of worms – if your drenches were ineffective, you may

paddocks.

Sometimes, sheep aren’t just scouring but may also be suffering from other infectious conditions. The issues above may be present in the mob, contributing to the problem, but there are a few more conditions that can be involved and really make a mess of weaners.

Coccidiosis can be a factor. Young animals have to develop immunity to these protozoan parasites. A big enough dose of coccidia can see large areas of the bowel damaged.

The resulting loss of protein, fluid and other nutrients can be fatal.

Bacterial scours are also common in sheep stressed by other issues. The bowel is home to many bacteria, but the balance of those bacteria can be upset. They can have problems with Yersinia, Campylobacter, Salmonella and possibly other bacteria that we haven’t identified yet. In these cases, antibiotics may be needed to reduce the severity of signs and prevent deaths.

What should you do if confronted by weaner scours? Consider the simple things first – could it be worms or selenium? If sheep are sick and particularly if they are dying, a serious condition is present. These need to be investigated by post-mortem examination and lab submission of samples from scouring sheep.

Further action can be discussed onfarm, but antibiotics may be needed to bring serious weaner scours under control.

This year’s Beef Spectacular event will showcase a unique Feedback Trial which has been hailed a major success in providing more information to commercial beef producers, so they can make informed breeding decisions.

Minister for Primary Industries, Steve Whan, who is attending the Beef Spectacular event in Dubbo, said the trial was coordinated by Industry & Investment NSW, in conjunction with Cargill Beef. “The NSW Government’s beef experts really wanted to provide some practical help to commercial and stud producers so they are better informed about how their cattle perform along all the points of the supply chain - at the feedlot, at the abattoir, and when they reach the buyer,� Mr Whan said. “There are hundreds of thousands of cattle which go through feedlots each year, but often a producer doesn’t really know how their cattle are performing. “What makes this Feedback Trial unique is that you get to find out how individual cattle perform, because they are tagged and individually assessed by experts. “The trial utilised the latest technology, including a video imaging system known as VIAscan, which estimated the total meat and fat of an individual carcass,� Mr Whan said.

The trial involved:

• 215 beef cattle arrived at Cargill Beef’s feedlot at Stockinbingal, in November 2009 • The animals were fed for 112 days • The cattle went to the abattoir at the end of February • Every individual animal was assessed at three separate stages of the supply chain Steve Exton, Beef Industry Leader for Industry & Investment NSW, said he received an overwhelming response from producers who were eager to be involved in the trial. “The cattle were assessed when they entered the feedlot, we also looked at how they were performing while they were in the feedlot, and finally we assessed the carcass specifications, which looked at the meat yield, fat, meat colour, marble score and eating quality,â€? Mr Exton said. “This has been such a great trial, it’s so much more than a carcass competition, and I am genuinely pleased it has been able to increase participation and utilise new technology as part of this new Beef Spectacular event. “The success could not have been achieved without the involvement from beef producers and the support from Cargill Beef, who have provided the use of their feedlot and abattoir.â€?

Mr Whan said the Feedback Trial will be held again next year.

Production of the ninth edition of the Cooma Lions Phone directory is underway.

In the early nineties Cooma Lions Club members determined that a more “user-friendly”, locally-based phone book would be of benefit to the Cooma community and local businesses.

The emphasis from the beginning was on a smaller size, larger print, locally focused directory.

This decision resulted in the first book being printed and distributed in 1994.

Its very positive reception by the community encouraged Lions to continue to provide the service. With a local focus, directory entries cover Cooma-Monaro shire and adjoining areas in the Snowy River and Bombala Shires, including Nimmitabel, Berridale, Adaminaby, Dalgety and Ando. However the directory travels far and wide, with 8000 copies delivered free for each edition. It also includes community information and is produced every seond year.

Cooma Lions are proud of their

directory, its ease of use and the service it provides to both residents and business. To ensure the accuracy of the new edition, the club is now urgently seeking advice of required corrections, alterations or new entries, including advertising changes.

To minimise errors this advice should be in writing to Cooma Lions Club, PO Box 208, Cooma 2630 as soon as possible. New advertisers will be welcomed. New entries such as mobile numbers may also be included.

Eight to go to state cont’d from p40 Will managed to make the final of the 100m after finishing eighth overall in the heats with 17.41 sec (e) knocking off nearly a second on his heat time.

Will couldn’t match the speed of the others in final and crossed the line in sixth placing in a time of 16.69 sec (e).

A PB in the 200m, Will kept up with leaders in the straight and severed the finish tape in third place knocking half a second of his previous best recording 35.59 sec (e). Will also smashed his old PB in the 400m by more than seven seconds to clock 1:31.8 sec (e), finishing in fifth position. Will and Bradley Pevere battled it out in the Long Jump to see who would make it through to State in sixth place and Will won out by 6 cms leaping 3.21m.

U/10….. Zac Ingram started his campaign to make State with a third placing in the High Jump with 1.15m, a PB of 10cms. At the 100m Zac was run out in the heats (16.49 sec (e)) and missed the final by one position recording his best time by three quarters of a second, a fantastic run to knock off that amount of time.

In the 60m hurdles Zac was run out in the heats finishing ninth overall (12.92 sec (e)). In the 800m, (one of Zac’s favorites events) he unfortunately suffered a problem and had to withdraw during the race.

Liam Rankin hit the ground running with PB in both the 70m and 100m.

Liam flew out of the start in both the heats and finals of each event.

In the 70m he was second past the post in great time of 11.37 sec (e).

In the final of 70m Liam improved his time to 11.17 sec but finished third.

Liam scored two BP’s in the 100m, to take out the heat in 15.51 sec (e).

He dropped one placing in the final to second, but ran faster in a blanket finish to post a 15.46 sec (e). Liam top off the straight Track with fifth in the heat and final of the 60m Hurdles in very good time, in the heat his time was 12.85 sec (e), while his final was a good half a second faster clocking 12.13 sec.

On the circular track Liam contested the 200m and finish in sixth place with 36.58 sec (e), this was very close to another PB. In the

Field Events Liam picked up a fourth position in the Shot Put and ninth in the Long Jump with a leap of 3.41m.

U/11 Jordan Louis contested most of the field events and one track event, the 1100m Walk.

In the walk Jordan keeps on improving and this walk he has eclipsed his previous walk by over half a minute and also broken through the eight minute barrier to cross the finish line in second place in PB time of 7:35.67 sec (h). Jordan also was second in the Javelin in ahotly contested competition with a throw of 17.66m.

At the Shot Put he managed to scrape into the top six in sixth place with a heave of 7.54m. With his second best throw of the season Jordan could only place seventh with a toss of 18.50m. Jordan claimed another PB in the Triple Jump with 7.67m and finished in 11th place.

Nick Wassink twisted his knee in the first round of the Javelin and was hindered by this the rest of the day. Nick carried on and with a good throw of 15.58m moved him into seventh place. The injury limited Nick to a standing throws in the Discus where he was placed 10th with a sling of 16.04m. With icing applied over night Nick was able to move freely on the Sunday. In the Shot Put he enjoyed the freedom from the injury and posted his second best heave of the season to take out the Shot Put with a putt of 8.38m. In the Long Jump Nick could only manage a leap of 2.89m placing him in 13th position.

U/13 Daniel Pevere found that there are some fast sprinters in his age group this season as he fronted up to the 100m and 200m. In the 100m he past the post in seventh placing in both heat and final, clocking 15.25 sec (e) for the heat and 15.20 sec (e) for final.

Daniel, new to Hurdles this year picked up a fifth placing and a PB with 18.23 sec (e). Daniel’s forte is the Javelin and he recorded a winning throw of 25.89m as well as PB for his effort. Daniel placed seventh in the Shot Put with a heave of 6.83m and work his way up to fifth position in the Discus with a throw of 14.38m.

District womens bowls

Netball season begins Cooma’s: Theresa Botto, Leonie Snell, Margherita Zasso with Malua Bay’s: Ellie Crompton, Elaine Huckel and Bess Holloway.

Monday and Tuesday March 1 and 2, saw Jindabyne hosting the goup play-off to decide who will represent the group at the state finals at Tuncurry in September.

Day one was between the team of E Crompton, A Davis and B Holloway from Malua Bay, representing Far South Coast and T Botto, L Snell and M Zasso from Cooma representing Snowy Mountains.

It was a very cool and overcast day, the ladies from the coast found it a contrast to what they are used to, however, it did not stop them playing good bowls.

Some excellent results have been recorded over the last week.

Last Wednesday in the nine-hole stableford Gillian Petersohn struck form to win with 19 points. The runner-up was Beaty Russell with 17 points.

Balls were won by Aileen Smith, 16 points, Denise Ashcroft, 15 points, Clare Nowland, 14 points, and Midge Theron, 13 points.

On Saturday in the nine-hole competition Lorraine McGregor was the winner with a very pleasing 22 points. Dorothy Bilbow was the runner-up on a countback with 15 points. Balls were won by Denise Ashcroft, 15 points, and Dulcie Thistleton, 12 points.

The first round of the Club Championships was contested on Sunday. Lorraine McGregor played an excellent round to win the day’s competition with 76 net.

Two very happy gym members Anytime Fitness, Cooma, made two people very happy last Friday when they received a special membership prize.

During February, the gym was offering a 42” plasma TV to anyone who joined up, or any member who referred a new member.

Manager Shane Johnson presented the prizes to Elizabeth Maxwell and Jake Dietrich.

The gym now has 600 members, 65 percent of which are female.

Eight to go to state The Cooma regional team was a small one this year compared to past years.

We only had 10 athletes representing Cooma at the regional championships and of the 10, eight were able to qualify through to the ACT Little A’s State Championships in three weeks at the AIS Track in Bruce.

For nearly all the team, this was their first regional champs.

U/8…….Jasmin Pascoe finished ninth in all of her events she contested, in the Discus Jasmin (where she is just learning to do the turn), she only managed 8.02m.

In the Shot Put Jasmin is determined to master the O’Brian style Glide.

Putting this into practice at the Champs was a brave move, this week she could only putt 3.62m. Over on the track Jasmin tried to match it with the sprinters in the 50m dash but

there are some speedy young ladies in Canberra, Jasmin clocked 11.78 sec (e).

U/10 Nikki Harmer made it to the final of the 70m after running fifth in her heat, just narrowly short of her PB. In the heat Nikki clocked 12.86 sec (e) and for the final 12.89 sec (e). In the 800m, Nikki ran her second best time for the season, coming home in ninth place in 3:56.09 sec (h). The 200m was a straight final with Nikki hot on the heels of the place getters in fifth position, running a good time of 40.11 sec (e) PB. Nikki found it tough in the field events against the Canberra girls, finishing in 13th place in the Long Jump with a leap of 2.47m. In the Shot Put, Nikki couldn’t produce her Cooma form and finished ninth with a heave of 3.99m.

U/16-17….Kirralee England is a veteran to these championships over the years, this being her 10th or 11th regionals.

Kirralee recorded two first, two second and one third placing over the weekend.

The Shot Put was her first event for the weekend and she was able secure first place with 5.98m. Then, she hurled the Javelin into second place with 16.66m and her final event on the Saturday was one of her favorite events, the Long Jump, producing a leap of 4.01m to be placed second just below her season best of 4.08m.

On the Sunday, Kirralee’s performance in the Triple Jump wasn’t up to her usual standard but was still long enough to win the competition with 7.06m.

Discus was her last event for the carnival where her effort of 18.90m gained her a third placing.

U9 Bradley Pevere couldn’t produce the form that he had going into the carnival from the week before where he achieved five PB at our last weekly competition.

Bradley’s 700m Walk (6:12.00 sec (h)) was his best result for the carnival where he came home in third place.

Bradley was able to make it to the final of the 70m, running sixth in the heat (12.99 sec (e)) and clocking 12.59 sec (e) for the final crossing the line in sixth place. Bradley was run out in the 100m heats in ninth place (18.05 sec (e)).

At the Long Jump he just missed out on the top six when he finished just behind his team mate with a leap of 3.15m.

U/9 Will Pendergast - had an extremely good carnival, making it through to State Champs in three of the five events he entered. In the 70m, Will ran third in 11.82 sec (e), but missed out on the places by a few cms, picking up fourth overall in 12.02 sec (e).

Monaro contests Treloar/Griffin shield Monaro played the Treloar/Griffin shield at Bega last week with four sides taking part, Under 23’s, Under 16’s, Under 14’s and under 12’s.

It was great to see the Monaro put together an under 23 rep side, it’s been many years since this age group has taken to the field.

Although beaten on the day the under 23’s at full strength can mix it with the strong coast teams.

Jim Nichols and Dean Wolf went well with the bat and Damo Roach with the ball. A big thanks to Azzo (manager) and all the boys and we look forward to seeing the under 23’s on the field next season.

Under 16’s The Monaro under 16’s put in an outstanding bowling and fielding performance against the powerful Far South coast team in match at Bega.

Monaro lost the toss and were forced to bowl on a wet outfield, which made hanging onto the ball difficult after the first few overs.

The bowlers all bowled good line and length and with some great catching got Far south Coast out for 92.

It was Far South Coast’s lowest score in rep game for the season. The notable catches were taken by Campbell Hillman, Justin Locker and James Ewart (who finished with three) and it was inspiring catching that helped greatly in restricting their oppositions.

Bowling honors were shared with Campbell Hillman and Tim Williams each taking three wickets and the rest spread between Justin locker (two) Matty Crowley and Ben Mackay.

Unfortunately the strong Far South Coast bowling attack dominated Monaro who were dismissed for 62 Matty Deveraux was the only

batsman to look like getting to top of the attack, playing some fine forcing shots, while Locky Fraser and Jack Johnson also put up some stubborn resistance.

A good effort from Monaro but Far South Coast were just that little bit stronger on the day.

Under 14’s The Monaro under 14’s won the toss against Far South coast and batted. With a few new young faces they put together a solid score of 140, most batsmen got a start against some good bowling with Matty Moxon top scoring with 32, Harry Roach 18, Michael Bowman 14, Joel Smith 12, and Kevin Fraser and Josh Hogan putting on 20 for the last wicket.

In reply far South Coast slowly whittled away the score but at the expense of wickets and at 8 for 127, Moxom and Weston then cleaned up the tail to have Far South Coast out for 130 - a great win for the under 14 who only lost one of their four rep games this season.

The best of the bowlers were Matt Moxon 4-18, Josh Hogan 2-12, Zane Weston 1-13, and Joel Smith 1-6, the outstanding fielding from Luke Johnson, Jacob Moon, M Bruce and L Redmond was great. A 10 run win to Monaro and a great game of cricket.

Under 12’s The Monaro under 12’s start their battle with Far South Coast and with a big number of new faces and they tried their hardest with each boy giving his all, Monaro bowled first and ended up chasing a fair total and were unable to chase down the runs and finished well beaten but it was great to see their enthusiasm and many of these boys will be playing rep cricket for years to come.

Touch grand finals In damp, drizzly conditions at Rotary Oval last Friday evening, the Cooma Touch Association held their grand finals with eight sides doing battle for honours.

The Men’s A Grade was very close with the Fatz Axes holding on to a 5-3 win over the consistent Landmark young side.

B Grade men saw Rodney’s Welding thrash ‘What tha?’ 8 to 1.

Cooma Rifle Club

Cooma rifle club shot the March heat of the NRA Medal Competition from 300 yards last Saturday morning.

We were using factory second ammunition to see if it was all right, so didn’t expect any high scores. The wind played around a bit, coming from the north but varying in strength.

In the event there were some reasonably good stages. Noel Barrett scoring 49.3 for his second stage. The off-rifle scores were: 1: Noel Barrett 45.2 and 49.3 total 94.5, 2: Don Robb 45.1 and

time with Fancox 2 prevailing over the consistent Young Guns 1.

B Grade mixed saw Rodney’s Welding defeat Cooma Ex-Services Club 14 to 4.

A very enjoyable season was witnessed with the new rule changes really opening up the games.

The over halfway kick rule was a big winner as was the marker and badge referees officiating.

Wheels across Monaro

41 Cooma’s Ti-Tree racecourse was the backdrop for day four of the MTB race which started in Thredbo last Monday.

Riders in the race completed a lap of the racetrack before a sprint to the finish, then a leisurely 90km ride to the coast.

The event began last year and once again attracted good participation.

Fourball to Barnes and Robinson Cooma golf with Max Turner Andrew Barnes and David Robinson once again combined to win the Fourball Best Ball Championship which was played on Saturday over 18 holes.

Andrew and David shot a fine 3 under Par Round of 69 off the stick to win by two strokes.

Richard and Matthew Hanna combined excellently to clearly win Saturday B Grade Championship after the pair shot a fine 74 off the stick.

A last minute pairing of Chriss Tucker and Geoff Bohringer took out the C Grade Championship with an excellent round of 89 off the stick, Chriss and Geoff defeated the C Grade favourites Bill Keefe and Ross Fraser by a couple of shots.

The Hanna combination took out Saturday Handicap Trophies with 49 Stableford pts.

Saturday Ball Competition winners were Matthew and Richard Hanna 49, Sean Smith and Mark Rainsford, Steve Young and David Paterson 45, Bruce Burton and Steve Dunn, Heikki Evans and Bart Joseph, Tony Monday and Warwick West, along with Sam and Phil Patricks all on 44 pts on a count back.

Saturday Nearest the Pin winners were David Robinson and Malcolm Crockett. Long Drive winners on the sixth Fairway were Phil Patricks A Grade, Sean Smith B Grade, and Kane Hurford C Grade.

Only a small field competed in Sunday Single Stableford with the showery weather no doubt keeping a number of players away from the course. The long hitting Tony Clibborn took a liking to the conditions to win on the day with an excellent 42 Stableford pts, Tony defeated Trevor Bailey on a count back

after both players shot fine rounds. The Nearest the Pin winners were Denis Minehan and Trevor Bailey.

Ricky Hanna was at his best last Wednesday when he shot 43 Stableford pts to win the Mid-Week Competition.

Campbell Childs once again was the Bridesmaid for the second week in the row going down by one stroke to Ricky, Campbell collected the second placed prize on a count back from Geoff Glanville after both players finished on 42 pts. Bruce Burton once again played well to collect the fourth prize with his fine round of 41 pts.

Wednesday Ball Competition winners were David Ware 40,Jacob Levy, Bill Dyball, Alan McDonald, Gordon Weston, and Bart Joseph 38, along with Bill Rushton on 37 pts. Nearest the Pin winners were Alan McDonald and Greg Sturgess.

Rodney Heise assisted by Mark and Jenny Rainsford took out Wednesday Daylight Saving Ambrose with an excellent 26.3/6 Handicap score.

Daryl Hagger, Peter Smith and Steve Young were the Scratch winners after shooting a fine round of 33 off the stick.

Cooma bowls championships Play continued in the Cooma Bowling Club’s championship program on Sunday with the finalists in the major pairs championship determined on Sunday.

Paul Schulz and John Schoon had a tense battle with defending champions Mel Storta and Wayne Lodge while Nelson Wallace and Jim Fletcher had a big win over Owen Russell and Paul Cannell.

The matches were played in tricky conditions on Sunday with a couple of breaks for rain. Schulz and Schoon made a good start against Storta and Lodge. Five shots on the ninth end contributed significantly to them establishing a 17 – 5 lead.

At this point Storta and Lodge started to fight back. Showing the form that has made them the dominant pairs combination in the club over the last decade they lifted their game. On a number ends they created opportunities to pick up several shots only to see either Schulz or Schoon limit the damage or even steal the shot. In an eight end period Storta and Lodge cut the deficit in half.

In the finish Schulz and Schoon were able to hang on to take the match 21-13. Their defensive play in the second half of the game was critical to their win as they were required to hold off some inspired play from Storta and Lodge.

In the other semi final, Wallace and Fletcher continued their impressive form with another dominating display. By the eighth end they had the match under control with a 19-2 advantage.

Both Wallace and Fletcher played excellent bowls to continually

control the head. Their draw bowling in the conditions was outstanding. Russell and Cannell had no answer to their play.

In an attempt to get into the game, Russell and Cannell were forced to play some risky bowls. Unfortunately, it was not their day and they could only manage to win 5 ends. The final score of 37 – 11 reflected both the good play by the winners and the desperate play from the losers.

Schulz and Schoon will now meet Wallace and Fletcher in what should be a very interesting final.

On Sunday there were also two good games of social bowls.

Strong finishes were the order of the day. Lola Wallis, Simon Schoon and Denis Steinfort won the last four ends to edge out Mario Frezza, Lorraine West and Geoff Venables 18 -16. After being down 15 – 4, Renate Winckel, Gary Douch and Mark Buckley came home the stronger to record a 24 – 17 win over Daphne Buckley, Stumpy Wallis and Margherita Zasso.

This weekend will see another busy schedule. On Saturday the Cooma Club will host visitors from Woden with a special full day program. The second round of the pennant and Monaro Shield will be played on Sunday. The two Cooma sides will do battle in the pennant. In the Monaro Shield, Cooma 1 will be away to Adaminaby (a change to the original draw) and Cooma 2 will be at home to Jindabyne.

In championship news the draw for the major singles has been done. Players who can arrange their matches are urged to do so as the program is very tight.

Barry Dennis’ first win for the season

Three Cooma players in rep squad Three Cooma Stallions players have been training and playing for the last four months in the Far South Coast academy squad.

Zach Smith, Mitch Lynch and Ryan Stores have been doing the hard yards, training down the South Coast and playing against various other academy sides and NRL Under 18 squads.

The team has been highly successful with a win over Group Six and Seven combined, a draw with southern devils, a draw with Melbourne Storm and a narrow loss to the powerful Parramatta Eels.

Coach Gary Stevenson was extremely pleased

with the commitment and enthusiasm shown by all of the team.

All three of our Cooma boys have now been selected in a reduced squad to represent Group 16 at Moruya this Saturday in a trial for the chance to represent the Greater Southern Stingrays squad in April.

This could lead to possibly being selected for NSW Country in games leading up to the State of Origin series.

All three boys can’t wait for the weekend and are ready for the game of their lives.

Heat 13 of 2009/10 Twilight series was held on Lake Jindabyne on Wednesday 24th February. Two mono-hulls turned up along with five cats.

Alex Machin and his crew, Mel Kroenert, towed his Hobie 20 across the lake from East Jindabyne to make it to the start for the first time this season.

Ross Lawley manned the start boat for the first time. He used the regular start sequence and Alex and Mel, eager to get going, set off on the one minute to go hooter.

The rest of the fleet got away on the start hooter, the Hobie 20 crew quickly worked out their mistake and returned to the start-line to start again.

The fast Hobie 20 soon passed the other cats and led the cat fleet out to the mountain mark on a long reach in the medium strength breeze.

Martin Van Weel and his mosquito followed the Hobie 20 around the mountain mark with Matt Mason and Tim Symons on Hobie 17s and Barry Dennis and Ross Tattersall on the Hobie 16 all close behind him.

The boats were so close that Matt and Tim had a small coming together while rounding the mark. The cats

following the Hobie 20 kept together on the next few legs.

Tim did a penalty 360 degree turn and kept behind Martin with Matt and Barry following. After the windward / leeward sausage legs the cats headed out on another triangle, except Alex and Mel who starated a second sausage leg.

They quickly realized their mistake and set out in pursuit of the others.

The Hobie 20 caught and passed the other cats and crossed the finish line first.

The other cats closed up ranks again. Martin crossed next, Matt squeezed ahead of Tim by a nose and Barry brought up the rear.

The handicap corrected times switched all the places with Barry and Ross taking their first win of the season, followed by Martin, Matt, Tim and Alex and Mel on the Hobie 20.

The two mono-hulls race involved 2 radial rigged lasers. Gote Vikstrom led Peter Hickling around the course and came away with his second win of the season. The Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club’s 2009/10 Twilight series is heading for an exciting finish with only 5 races left.

Tegan 2010 national downhill champion

WIN Jindabyne local Tegan Molloy is off and racing again this year in the adrenalin pumping sport that is Downhill Mountain bike racing.

At just 14 years old Tegan attends Jindabyne Central School and has only been competing since 2008.

It all began when Tegan’s dad was given a bike for father’s day. He then let Tegan use the bike for school sports on Fridays and eventually bought her her own downhill bike.

Tegan is the under 15’s National Champion for 2010, won the first round of the NSW/ACT State series at Thredbo with personal best time of 7.51sec and was crowned Interschools queen of the mountain in 2009.

Recently Tegan has competed came third

in the national round at Thredbo in the under 19’s division, second in the National round at Shepparton in Victoria (placd first in the under 15’s) and a first place at the Australian Championships under 15’s women’s downhill in Adelaide.

Tegan has a big task ahead of herself, hoping to win the under 19’s NSW/ACT State series, under 15’s National Series in 2010 and also once again be crowned the Australian Interschool Queen of the mountain for 2010.

The future is looking very bright for Tegan and she is working towards hopefully representing Australia at the Junior World championships in 2013

Snowy River Pony Club gets a dry day for rally

By Kate Heeley On Sunday February 28, the Snowy River Pony Club was able to hold its first rally day of the year, as the previously scheduled rally had been rained out.

There were some intermittent showers at Dalgety, but nothing could dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic riders and support people that attended – everyone had a great time.

There were 10 riders and mounts, as well as many parents and club supporters. This meant great cheer squads for the relays, traffic light competitions and the very popular egg and spoon races using Easter eggs.

People came from near and far to participate in the rally, and the club would like to thank everyone who attended as well as the following people in particular for their help on the day: Bruce and Maree McMillan,

Drew Buckby followed close behind. In rather damp conditions on Sunday Charlie held it together to come in with 79. Over the two days Charlie is in the lead by one shot from Drew.

B Grade leader after two days is Bob Key and C Grade leader over the two days is Herman Obermaier. Handicap leader for A Grade is Drew Buckby, B Grade Peter Clarke and C Grade Herman. Nearest the pin on the sixth Ben Clancy, eighth Charlie, Gavin Ross and second shot on the 14th Charlie. Next Saturday is hit off at your own time and arrange your own playing partners.

All men must be teed off by 10am ahead of the ladies.

For the ladies only one day has been played with Jan O’Halloran leading the way in the scratch division ahead of Carolyn Major. Handicap leader Jenny O’Byrne with Jan runner up. Nearest the pin third shot on the ninth Carolyn Major and second shot on the 17th Mary Obermaier.

Next weekend the ladies will follow the last group of men.

Wednesday’s stableford winner was Carolyn O’Byrne with 37 points. Runner up Christine Hornig with 32, nearest the pin, second shot on the eighth Jenny O’Byrne.

For the men on Wednesday Steve Chatterton won the day with 40 points. Ball winners Ross Thompson39 and Norm Archibald 37 Nearest the pin on the 12th Ross.

Bombala Champions bound for the Royal Bombala Australian Stock Horse breeders Julie and Bill Peadon have been named ‘Show Champions’ ahead of the 2010 Sydney Royal Easter Show in recognition of their long-time participation in the Show’s prestigious Stock Horse competitions.

Each year, the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) selects a group of exhibitors, entertainers and participants from across regional NSW who represent the myriad of Sydney Royal competitions to be ‘Show Champions’.

Mr and Mrs Peadon have been competing at the Show with their Australian Stock Horses since 1998 and return this year with a team of three horses. They made history in 2000, when their mare was the first Australian Stock Horse to win Supreme Champion Led Horse and Champion Working Horse.

The Show is an important date on the Peadon’s calendar as it is an opportunity to exhibit the horses they breed, train and ride themselves.

Chief Executive of the RAS, Peter King, is encouraging the Bombala community to get behind their local Show Champion and pay a visit to the Horse Pavilion at this year’s Easter Show.

“The Show is a celebrated meeting place for

country families to catch up and see the best in agriculture from across NSW,” Mr King said.

District bowls competitions begins Teams from the Cooma Bowling Club have had a great start to the 2010 Monaro District Pennant season winning both of their first round matches played on Saturday.

Home teams had the better of the games played in the first round of the Monaro Shield.

Cooma 1 had their best start in the pennant for some years when they downed arch rivals Adaminaby 5 – 1 at Adaminaby. The victory to the Cooma side is their first over Adaminaby for some seasons. While the competition between the two teams has been very close, Adaminaby has managed to record narrow wins in the last two seasons.

The Cooma side won two of the three rinks on Saturday with a dominate display from the team of Venables, Buckley, Storta and Lodge the basis of a clear 67 – 49 aggregate shots win. John Schoon lead his side to 17 -14 win while Ed Potter had a 17-18 win over Peter Caldwell to claim one rink for Adaminaby.

In Cooma, the Cooma 2 side continued their dominance over Jindabyne recording a convincing aggregate shots win of 72 – 44. Again the victory was based on a big win on one rink with Thompson, Russell, Jackson and Weston powering to a 36 – 13 result. Colin Roberson’s team led all the way in downing Chris Demczuk while Ray Nicholls managed to sneak home 18-17 to grab one rink for Jindabyne.

The two Cooma sides have an early lead in the competition making next Sunday’s local derby critical to the overall outcome of the pennant.

In the Monaro Shield the three home sides had wins. Cooma 1 has a slender lead in the competition after recording the best aggregate shots difference. They won three of four rinks against Coolamatong and won the aggregate 92 – 67. Cooma 1 had an overall win of 7 – 1.

Adaminaby also had a 7-1 win when they accounted for Cooma 2 at Adaminaby. Though Adaminaby won three rinks to one their aggregate win was kept to 83-72 as all four rinks were close.

Jindabyne completed a trifecta for home teams when they had the better of Nimmitabel. While the sides shared the rinks 2 all, Jindabyne recorded big wins on their two winning rinks to chalk up a 82 – 62 aggregate win.

This gave Jindabyne a 6-2 win in the competition.

Next weekend the two competitions will return to the normal Sunday afternoon time slot. In the pennant the two Cooma sides will clash while Jindabyne will host Adaminaby. There has been a venue change in the Monaro Shield. Cooma 1 will now travel to Adaminaby for their clash as the second Cooma green is still not ready for championship play. Cooma 2 will host Jindabyne while Nimmitabel will be at home to Coolamatong.

Two local girls, Taelar Williams and Zoe Lynch, have had outstanding results in their chosen fields in the horse arena.

Taelar (pictured at right) is 15 years old, attends SMEGS and is in year 11. She also attends a horse studies course at TAFE as part of her HSC. Taelar has just won the title of Junior National Showrider of the year as well as these events at Canberra Royal novice hack, ansa ridden third, rider class third 15-17yrs, pony club rider fourth, pair of hacks first open (with Zoe), pair of riders first under 17’s (with Zoe), club rider first 15 -17years, novice
