Cooma’s brief history of flooding By Lucas Forbes
The twin power of hindsight reminds us why the recent floods were no big deal. The floods became a sort of spectacle for the town but besides a few closed roads and some street damage Cooma was untouched. Cooma has been in greater danger before and is in a better position to weather the storm than ever before. Current levees in Cooma are designed to withstand anything less than a one in 20 year flood. By comparison the recent flood was only 1-10 years according to David Byrne, Director of Engineering Services. Cooma Creek flooded in 1956, 1961, 1966, 1978, 1991, 1992, 2007 and now 2012. “Every 10 years they keep in touch with us [flood waters] they keep coming”, remarked local man John Pattrick. However the worse flood was possibly experienced more than 50 years ago. In 1956 Cooma had one of its first and biggest recorded floods. 58.2 millimetres of water fell on Cooma in the space of one and half hours. With no levees and no warning the town was quickly flooded. Cars, shop stock and large trees were swept away in the torrent. Roger Norton was 15 at the time, he remembers how uprooted trees The Bombala Street in the 1956 floods near Mack’s Corner. Photo courtesy of Richard Mack. crashed in Sharp Street, creating a makeshift dam. Roger was just leaving school when the worst of the flood hit. His family were unable to save anything from their store, Norton’s Building Supplies, now Cooma H Hardware. The store was hit hard and much of the materials were covered in mud. “Everyday after school between March and May I went to clean all the building materials, and on the day before the May floods I had finished the last one.” Ouch. The day after, Police estimated 15 cars had been washed away. The damage bill was estimated at 100,000 pounds. The town recovered quickly though and by lunchtime next day some businesses were open again. Many displayed signs in their windows to show Cooma they would survive. Mack’s Store’s sign read ‘Down, but not out’. Pauline Taffa remembers the flood of 1956 and has seen many others since then. It was clear to her that there was no real danger to the town. “I wasn’t concerned at all because I felt they’d done so much to the creek that I knew it wouldn’t be serious. I wasn’t concerned at all.” John Pattrick has lived in Cooma since the 40s and thought preparations and concern for the flood were “over Sharp and Bombala Streets in the 1956 flood. In March of 1956 Mr Pattrick was Thanks in part to the levees but also the efforts of emergency and council staff. As Mr 26 and working in Cooma Steam Norton put it “I’d like to compliment the emergency services… I think they did a great Laundry. job.” “The shoe shop across the road If these floods can teach us anything it’s that we should be prepared but not frightened. opened the door to let the water After all, if a humungous flood cannot destroy Cooma at its most vulnerable in 1956 it will out but actually let the stock out” he probably survive many, many more. recalled. He didn’t seem too worried about subsequent floods though.

Cooma Show exceeds expectations The Way To Go UPCOMING TOURS 2012
The 137th Westpac Cooma Show has exceeded all expectations. Despite weeks of wet weather leading up to the show, which resulted in the cancellation of the woodchop, yard dogs and junior judging competitions, plus the postponement of the horse events, last Saturday’s show still attracted thousands of people. The highlight of the show was the visit by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce AC and Mr Bryce, Her visit enabled her Excellency to meet one of the Australia Year
their barbecue van. The opening ceremony saw Greg McGufficke become a life members after his 60-year association with the show as an exhibitor and a volunteer. The show was also pleased to welcome the Federation Guard Precision Drill Team. This group of young defence personnel put on two demonstrations during the afternoon, which delighted the crowd. They have been invited back. With a few attractions unavailable due to floods, it was good to

A new (and impromptu) event was the ‘Save the Cow’ relay, which was won by the SES La Nina crew, from the Cooma Rugby Club. In a sporting gesture, the SES shared the prizemoney. Entries in the pavilion section this year were strong once again, with the addition of the $1000 fine arts prize for local schools, which was won by Cooma Public School. There were also some inventive sculptures on display and the Cooma Rodeo Association sponsored a photographic competition which was won by Narelle Allen. Phil Horneman and his band provided great music during the morning and a school’s choir performed the National Anthem for the Governor-General. 76 Commissioner Street attle and sheep entries were good, considering the Friday 16th March – Super Tuesday 20th March 2012 CLOSED Monday , Wednesday & Thursday access problems the region faced and the fleece competition was again hotly contested. Highway damage a traffic concern Lisa Ashurst The 6km stretch of the Monaro Highway between Native Dog Bridge and Holts Flat Road in the Bombala Shire has long been a problem for road users due to the poor condition of the sealed surface. The heavy rains throughout the region over the 2011/12 summer season have caused severe degradation to the already damaged sections, with the problem now compounded by the increase in heavy vehicles using the road following the closure of Brown Mountain due to landslips. Bombala Council is aware that the situation with this stretch of road is now critical and flashing multi-message boards
have been installed to warn motorists and the Council feels it has done as much as it can for the moment to keep drivers up to speed on the situation. The Council is well aware that repairs are now urgently needed but this section of the Monaro Highway has been an issue for some time as it has been slowly degrading over a number of years. It has been an ongoing situation however, with Bombala Council in constant consultation with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) over the years in an effort to upgrade the road along that stretch of the Monaro Highway, as the condition of the sealed surface has been a long-term problem within the shire.
Formerly known as the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) the RMS says it has been monitoring the condition of the Monaro Highway between Native Dog Creek and Holt Flat Road for some time, adding that in addition to “Rough Surface” and “Traffic Hazard” signs that were already in place, two electronic flashing multi-message boards were installed on 23 February following further, rapid deterioration due to the extended heavy rainfall and the increase of heavy vehicle traffic.
The RMS has advised that work to improve the condition of the highway between Mount Cooper and Peadons Roads has been delayed by the need for a pavement stabilising machine, which has been held up by the wet weather delays at other worksites. However, it is expected that work will start within a fortnight. Other patching will be carried out on a section of road south of Native dog Creek, north of Ando.

The Roads and Maritime Services closed the “The highway is the lifeline”, said Bemboka road due to landslides caused by heavy rains. business owner, Patrick Reubinson, “now we’re at the ass-end of the valley”. Bemboka relies heavily on traffic going to or from Canberra on the Snowy Mountains Highway. But with that route essentially cut the town became a dead end. “It’s suddenly affected everyone’s sense of well being to be at the end of a local road.” said local business owner Judith Pearce. There is no word yet on when the Brown Mountain Road might open. However Judith Pearce feared it could be as long as three months. Several locals have reportedly written to state members Andrew Constance and John Barilaro as well as federal member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Mike Kelly. Mr Reubinson said Dr Kelly was the only one who had not replied. Bemboka is renowned for its pie shop, however it may also be threatened by road closures. “The pie shop is [normally] very busy and it employs a lot of young people. I can’t imagine how it will survive three months without an AVAILABLE income.”

Brown Mountain landslide impacts on health services are minimal The closure of the Snowy Mountains Highway at Brown Mountain due to a significant landslide will have minor impacts on health services provided by the Pambula and Bega Hospitals. This road is used as the main ingress and egress between southern NSW coastal communities including Bega and Pambula, and the Monaro and ACT regions. Local residents from Bega, Pambula and Eden are able to access their respective local hospitals. Bega Valley Health Services Acting General Manager, David West has advised the only impact
will be on patients travelling to Canberra for treatment. The most significant impact will be the speed at which patient transport services can be delivered. For patients assessed to have a complicated condition or in need of urgent treatment, air transport will be considered. The alternative route to the Snowy Mountains Highway is Darragh Road which connects the coast to Bombala

The Greater Southern Sector of the NSW Ambulance Service has advised that it will transport patients in need of treatment other than that provided by Pambula or Bega Hospitals via Batemans Bay due to the inconsistent radio reception on Darragh Road. This trip is expected to take between 40 and 60 minutes longer than the Brown Mountain route. The RMS estimate it will be between four to six weeks before the road is open to traffic.
Disposal of Council lands Lisa Ashurst Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is looking at selling off a number of parcels of Council owned land and is currently assessing the viability of several blocks around the shire in preparation for the sale. Council owns several parcels of vacant land throughout the shire and especially in the township of Cooma that have not been specifically identified for any set purpose which makes them ideal to be considered for sale as they are not required for any marked operational purposes. Land throughout the shire is classified either as operational or community land with the latter reserved for community purposes which means it cannot be sold unless its classification is changed to operational first. As a result, community land parcels are not included in the report. Other pieces of land not included are laneways, small parcels of land considered unrealistic to sell due to the costs incurred plus the small return for the loss of public space. Any oddly shaped blocks have also been omitted. As well as several parcels of land in Cooma there are also a small number in Nimmitabel that
are considered able to be sold/developed almost immediately. The Playground Strategy has also identified that any playgrounds to be disposed of should take place towards the end of the implementation of the strategy but if they are to be used to raise funds for playgrounds, the disposals may need to be moved forward. Many of these land parcels have been in Council’s hands for quite a number of years and while the sale looks more likely, Council is also considering possible alternative uses. In relation to determining what is to be done with surplus land, Council is to form a Vacant Land Assessment Working Party to determine the appropriate use for vacant Council land and to provide recommendations to Council. Members of the Working Party are Councillors Stephanie McDonald, Tony Kaltoum and Roger Norton. Ross Lawley is the Recreation and Property Manager and Mark Adams the Town Planner. It was also decided to allocate $20,000 from the Development reserve to assist with the assessment. The party will work through the program of assessment and if required, the subsequent disposal.

Well, Dorothea Mackellar was so right, wasn’t she? One minute we’re starting to grow gills and flippers, the next we are basking in glorious sunshine.
And how lucky was the Cooma Show – the rain on Thursday night could have spelt the end of the 2012 event. But then the sun shone and the show proceeded. Just amazing! With the region now set up for a marvellous autumn and winter break, there is just one thing more that we need… The Monaro has been dry for so long there are probably lots of young farmers out there who haven’t really had to do much with mending flood gates. This is the year the skills will be relearnt – and some modern fencing techniques might offer solutions to old floodgates which have disappeared downstream somewhere. There’s another lesson to be learnt too – those who kill willows in waterways should also be responsible for removing the dead trees before they cause carnage further downstream…
It’s sad to see some big old willows wiped out. They were holding creek banks together and providing shade for stock for decades.
Now they are just tangled up in wire, netting and posts, making flood repairs even more difficult.

Notification would have been appreciated Editor, I, among many others in Cooma, was affected by the rain and the evacuation order put in place by the SES on March 1. I had two family members evacuated to my home - one of them very elderly. We did the right thing by registering them and keeping the evacuation register up to date when they went back to their respective homes, awaiting further information re the evacuation. Imagine my surprise when I was listening to 2XL on the following Monday morning to find that the order had been lifted on Sunday. Would it have been too much to ask to be notified, especially as they had my home and mobile numbers on the registration form from early Thursday morning? We even attended the evacuation
centre at the Cooma Ex-Services club to see if we could help in any way, also asking how we would know when it was all over. We fully understand the need for people to be evacuated BUT it was never going to be a 1956 flood again so there was a certain amount of over-zealous knee jerking re the whole situation by the powers in charge. Why would it be taken for granted that an extremely elderly person would have a computer or be glued to a radio awaiting instructions? I find it incredulous that it was dealt with in the way it was. How about using some common sense and a few manners? Lets just hope that we never have such a situation in Cooma again.
Riposte Lisa Ashurst There’s no such thing as a quiet, let alone relaxing, weekend when the whole two days are warm and sunny and that’s not because we are all out visiting or doing some other fun recreational thing. It’s because we’ve had nothing but rain for the last three months so when last weekend dawned clear and bright and full of sunshine we all went into a frenzy of cleaning, washing, mowing and generally doing all those things we haven’t been able to do for ages because of the constant wet! It is why we were all exhausted come Monday because we’d run ourselves ragged over Saturday and Sunday! I managed to do some washing, cleaning, sweep paths and generally tidy up while Twin I mowed the lawn in the front yard and the verge out beyond the front fence (the back yard is going to have to wait because it’s still a slushy bog but that’s okay; we can wait). Then I did a bit of rearranging around the place outside and generally soaked up the sunshine. But hey, it was a novelty to see blue sky and some actual sunny stuff! It was exhilarating to go outside and get warm instead of wet! It was two whole days to get several weeks of

would flood as some of the sand bags at the shops indicated to me they did not know. Great to see our levy banks did their job. John Pattrick overdue stuff done all at once! But come Sunday night I was exhausted! I mean sure, I was thrilled that I had done so much but I was wiped, but no doubt I’m not the only one that ran around in a frazz of activity because who knew how long it was going to last? I just did everything I could think of because look! The sun’s out! Yes, I know it might sound like a demented reaction but after all those months of grey skies and rain I initially had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming when I glanced outside first thing Saturday morning. So when I realised it was for real.... Well what would you expect me to do? Of course I went nuts! Wonderfully, sunnily nuts actually and I loved every moment of my insanity streak and at the end of it I had dry stuff to fold, a neat lawn and a nice clean paths etc outside. Even the chooks looked happy, a bit dazzled by the sudden brightness, but definitely happier than they’ve looked in ages. But as I said, Twin I and I were not the only sunshine nutters. A few other people I spoke to were just as manic and had pretty much done the same things we had and were just as wiped out as we were so there you go. And that’s what happens these days when you get a sunny weekend.

Breaking the sound barrier It can be difficult to appreciate the restrictions imposed on someone by hearing loss unless we actually experience it ourselves but once a person’s hearing begins to deteriorate, it impacts almost immediately on the quality of their whole life. The things we take for granted such as using the telephone, watching the tele, listening to some music or just popping into the shops are also part of our everyday social interactions but these are lost when hearing problems develop and can lead to chronic isolation for the deaf and hearing impaired in the community. Fortunately for Canberra and the South Western NSW communities, the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre (SCIC) has been providing comprehensive Cochlear Implant services around the region for many years, with a permanent clinic, the SCIC Canberra Lady Fairfax AM Centre, opened in Canberra in May 2008 with surgical services provided by Canberra ENT Surgeon, Dr E P Chapman. The Centre has proved to be very successful and is fast becoming a one-stop shop for deaf and hearing-impaired people looking for assistance with their condition. One such person is Mr Kenneth Stranger, 76, of Dalgety who began experiencing difficulties when his hearing started to deteriorate, which left him floundering when it came to participating in conversations as well as in what was going on around him in general. “One of the worst things about going deaf was not hearing my grandchildren when they spoke to me and they would become upset because they thought I was ignoring them.” His hearing loss also caused a lot of frustration for his wife, which was distressing for both of them, so when the time came to make a decision it was a relief to know that help was only as far away as Canberra, saving them from a long trip to Sydney. The surgery went very well and Mr Stranger was one of the lucky ones who had an immediate and very positive response to the Implant when he was “switched on”. He also finds it very comfortable, very easy to use and praised the work of the training teams. “They are wonderful to work with.” he said. “People do need to understand though that no two Implant recipients will have the same result,” Mr Stranger added “There are many factors that govern how each person will respond.” Unlike hearing aids, which only amplify sound, Cochlear Implants are small, complex electronic devices containing a microphone, a speech processor, which
selects and arranges sounds, stimulators and electrodes that convert the impulses from the stimulators and directs them to the auditory nerve. As the nerves heal, the work of the implant comes more into play and this is where the post-implantation therapy comes in, as recipients go through several months of training as they learn to interpret the sounds they are receiving and adapt to them. What they are really hearing is an electronic sound reproduction and over several months the implant is fine tuned where necessary. A small handheld transmitting device that closely resembles a mobile phone in appearance works in tandem with the implant as it allows it to be programmed to deal with different sound situations. This device will also detect any failures with any part of the system. After receiving his implant and “switching on” in September 2011, Mr Stranger found he could comfortably recognise and understand speech and was delighted to report that he could also hear his wife as well as his children and grandchildren very easily. “Life is wonderful now!” he said recently “Couldn’t be better!” adding that he has also become a member of the Cochlear Awareness Network (CAN), which is establishing a network where people who are considering having this surgery can be connected with someone who has already done so. “People will inevitably have the kind of questions that only someone who has had a Cochlear Implant can answer because we have already been there.” Mr Stranger said and he sees the network as a valuable tool for sharing this information. Cochlear Implants are considered one of the most appropriate ways of addressing deafness in newborn babies, children and adults. The SCIC Lady Fairfax AM Centre helps around 200 deaf people in the ACT and South Western NSW Regional areas and extends their assistance to at least 25 new recipients every year. The Centre is located at Suite 2, Ground Floor, 10 Rudd Street, Canberra City. SCIC is also a charitable, non-profit organisation in receipt of limited Government funding via the NSW and ACT Health Department so it relies on the support of the corporate and community sectors for help with funding. Donations are fully tax deductible and can be sent to P O Box 188 Gladesville NSW 1675. You can also visit www.scic.org.au for more information on the Service. Pictured: Ken Stranger.

Margaret Echarri celebrated with friends at Cooma Chinatown and enjoyed her many phone calls from family and last but not least David Price who hosted a dinner party last Friday night attended by Pastor Gary Reurich and wife Merilyn, Marilyn Spellman, Dr Leayrod and many other friends of David’s. David did most of the catering himself and enjoyed setting the dinner table in a party theme. Many happy returns of the day to you all. VISIT TO VIETNAM Les Smith and Margaret Echarri have just arrived back from a relative’s wedding in Saigon. Twelve relatives and close friends from Australia attended. Les’s nephew David Brodie married Hoa Dang who he had met while working in Vietnam. How different is their ceremony to ours – David’s Mother presented him with seven red large dishes containing fruit, vegetables, eggs, chicken, biscuits, cakes and chocolates which represent “you will never be hungry”. This dish was then covered with a red and gold material – a very interesting ceremony, followed yet again by the exchanging of rings and signing of documents. A three-hour rest followed by a magnificent reception in an elegant restaurant attended by 270 guests who were in awe at Hoa’s white wedding gown which she had changed into after the morning ceremonies. Margaret and Les spent extra days in Saigon sightseeing and admiring the New Year decorations which were spectacular. A moving memory
was hearing about the 6am floating markets” where 60 boats were selling their goods to villagers who arrived in their smaller boats to buy – how different we all live? Towards the end of their stay they visited Halong Bay, this Bay features over 3,000 islands that rise out of the sea, very unique and a favourite spot for Americans, British and Australian tourists. Margaret and Les found the Vietnamese people so friendly and wanting to get on with their lives despite the long history of war. They were fascinated that Margaret and Les were aged in their 80s and travelling so far from their Australian families! - a memorable trip they tell me. CLAIMING THE DATE. Cooma Motor Engineers re-established in Polo Flat Lisa Ashurst One of Cooma’s oldest companies is back in business with a new product line about which new owner, Mike Cattermole, is very enthusiastic. Initially a Nissan Dealership in Cooma until five years ago, Cooma Motor Engineers has returned under its original name but is now a whole new manufacturing and retail business operating in Polo Flat. “Basically we’re starting again” Mr Cattermole said “but this time we’re doing caravans as well as cars!” While still a licensed motor vehicle/used car dealer, Mike and his team have taken on the caravan business in a major way and is now manufacturing new, ultramodern, stylish caravans on behalf of GrandCruiser Caravans of Newcastle at the Cooma Motor Engineers premises at Polo Flat. The up-market GrandCruiser Platinum Collection is strong, attractive and very comfortable and according to Mike “They are the best insulated caravans on the market and possibly the world’s best caravan!” Apart from manufacturing the GrandCruiser locally, Cooma Motor Engineers is also the Australian distributor for the totally unique Britishbuilt Silver Bullet caravans which are a stand-out with their clever design features, candy-coloured interiors and brilliant mirror-finish exteriors. “Local bloke” gains his second degree
William Lloyd who recently completed an Agronomist degree.
The Monaro Merino Association conducted the final of the Monaro Ram of the Year competition at Westpac Cooma Show last week. Conrayn Merino Stud of Berridale took out the trophy, donated by Triton products. The ram of the year competition is conducted between the Cooma, Dalgety, Delegate and Nimmitabel shows, with the final being held at different shows each year on a rotational basis. Due to the Delegate Show being cancelled, the
final was switched to Cooma this year. The MMA is now working on its next big event, the Monaro Merino Muster, to be held at the Cooma Showground on May 3, just prior to the berridael Merino Ewe competition on May 4 and 5. Pictured are Peter Lette from Conrayn Stud with MMA president Mark Pendergast.
The friendly crew at CRT Cooma Rural have just upped their knowledge base via staff member William Lloyd who recently completed his second degree as an Agronomist. Mr Lloyd gained his first in Wagga Wagga, where he grew up, and after 37 years on the land he knew where his primary interests lay, hence his decision to study for his second degree in this field. Being a three-year course, the extra workload has meant he’s been busily combining work and study for around the last five years. “My background is mainly in pasture and cropping, as that is big in Wagga, and studying to become
an Agronomist seemed like a logical extension of what I already knew.” Mr Lloyd studied for his second degree via Adelaide and as part of a group from all over Australia. “We did it through conference calls and the Internet which was great as it allowed us to study yet still go to work.” Mr Lloyd said. The three-year university level course covered such topics as cropping, pastures and soil science, chemicals, fertilisers, plant and grass species and offered extensive all-round farming advice as well, which is great news for CRT’s clientele who can either pop in or telephone with any questions concerning farm or property.

Australian Year of the Farmer’s newest Ambassador, Channel 9’s Catriona Rowntree, said the results confirmed a long-standing, but ultimately bogus stereotype; that careers in agribusiness are generally male-dominated. “This assumption is a load of rubbish,” Ms Rowntree said. “The Australian agricultural sector is thriving with enthusiastic successful young women ranging from jillaroos and farm hands, to THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2012 researchers, agronomists and CEOs of multinational COOMA SALEYARDS organisations. In fact women are said to account for one third of the management positions in agribusiness,” Cath said. “Agribusiness offers women dynamic and rewarding career paths and also provides an incredible opportunity to contribute to the prosperity of local communities and to the broader economy.”

Ask questions?
As I have had many readers contact me for further questions on property investment and sit down with me for personal strategy sessions. Which is great to see so much interest? WHY? Property Investment can be easier then you may think and most people who have an income and have some equity in their family home can invest in property. And right now there is a unique time in Australiaʼs history where in selected locations astute investors who take action will make a lot of money that will work towards securing their future for both them and their family. Too many people donʼt ask questions to find out if they can do it. You do not need savings and it will not put you out of pocket in anyway after tax, when you invest in positive cash flow property, and I could almost say there is zero risk, but I canʼt say that. But we do know there is so much money being spent on infrastructure $107Billion dollars and population growth is out of control and the housing shortfall is massive that the risk is so minimal there has never been a better time. But only in selected locations. I am running a information night tonight I would recommend every reader makes the time to come down and educate yourself and ask the questions you want to ask on property investment, paying of your home sooner with no extra payments and how you can secure your future using Property Investment as the vehicle. The entry is free, there is no selling, no hype, just blatantly honest advice on how to build real wealth. I hope to see you there. YOU CAN EDUCATE YOURSELF FOR FREE ON WED MARCH 14 We will be running a complimentary information night at the Alpine Hotel Function room 7.00pm to 8.30 pm To read and learn more or register for the information night please visit prosperitygroup.com.au\monaropost. MBA-ACT urges constructive approach on building inquiries Statement by Deputy Executive Director of the MBA- which the Auditor-General’s office appeared to have identified. “While we can understand why the amount of media attention ACT, Jerry Howard Canberra’s peak building and construction industry organisation, Master Builders ACT has warned that a move by the ACT Auditor General to launch an investigation into planning approval processes in the territory risk creating both duplication and confusion. The deputy executive director of the MBA-ACT, Jerry Howard said the announcement by the ACT Auditor-General, Maxine Cooper that she would be auditing planning and approvals processes failed to take account of work already initiated by the ACT Government and the building industry to address the issues. “We have never walked away from the issues which Dr Cooper seems to have identified but we do not want the solid progress made in addressing and improving Canberra’s planning and approvals processes becoming the subject of duplication across multiple jurisdictions,” he said. Mr Howard said the MBA-ACT and other Canberra building and construction industry organisations had been working closely with Government department and agencies for many months with a view to appropriately addressing the problem
and controversy directed at some of these developments has attracted the attention of Dr Cooper, we would hope that common sense prevails and that taxpayer’s money is not wasted on a duplication of effort,” he said. Mr Howard said the MBA-ACT had been closely involved in processes initiated by the ACT Planning and Land Authority which were likely to result in a tightening of both licensing and the general regulatory overlay governing building and construction in Canberra. “We want better regulation, not more regulation,” he said. “Then, too, we have been involved in on-going consultations with the ACT Government on the issues which flowed from the Building Quality in the ACT report.” Mr Howard said the bottom line was that while the MBA-ACT and other building industry bodies would undoubtedly offer their full cooperation with any specific inquiry mounted by the Auditor-General, it was important to recognise the processes which had already begun. “What we absolutely do not want to see is a duplication of processes and the possibility of contradictory findings and recommendations,” he said.
Discount rate loan demand down as lenders’ loan specials slow Popularity of fixed rate loans remains steady
“Mortgage Choice loan approval data supports this trend, showing a four percentage point fall in ongoing discount rate loan approvals in February. This is the largest decrease since we began reporting on this loan type in November 2010. “I was surprised to find that despite lenders raising their home loan interest rates independently of the Reserve Bank during February, and ongoing concern around the direction of interest rates, borrower data did not show any increased interest in the repayment security offered by fixed rate loans. “The fact that only one in five new loan customers opted for fixed rate loans reflects that there is still a large volume of borrowers willing to ride the variable rate rollercoaster.” Demand for basic variable loans rose to 17% of all approvals in February, from 14% in January while standard variable loan demand grew marginally to 16% from 15%. Line of credit loan popularity held steady at 3% and interest in introductory rate loans remained below 1%.
Demand for ongoing discount rate home loans waned nationally during February, while borrowers’ fondness for fixed rate loans steadied, according to loan approval data from Australia’s largest independently-operated mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice. Uptake of ongoing discount rate loans – where the interest rate is discounted over the entire loan term usually in exchange for an annual fee – fell to 42% of all new home loan approvals in February, from 46% in January but well above the 12-month average of 38%. Fixed rate loan demand steadied in February, at 21% of all new home loan approvals, on par with January and the sixmonth average, but ahead of the 12-month average of 16%. Local Mortgage Choice franchise owner/mortgage broker, Donna Robson said, “Lenders kicked off 2012 with a slew of loan discounts in a bid to compete for business in a subdued housing finance market. A number of these discounts were Visit Donna’s website at www.mortgagechoice. scaled back in February as lenders responded to shaky global com.au/Donna.robson economics and rising funding costs.”

POSTION VACANT
Changes to AeropelicanBrindabella operations Over the last six months the Australian regional aviation industry has seen aggressive recruitment campaigns from operators in the over 30 seat capacity market. Consequently regional airlines such as Aeropelican and Brindabella Airlines have to add to the list of challenges facing the industry such as rising fuel costs, increasing airport charges, constant threat of pilot attrition as a direct result of targeted recruitment waves and the forthcoming carbon tax. Mr Fabrice Binet, Chief Commercial Officer said: “The loss of our pilots to larger carriers is testimony to the high training and operating standards displayed by our crew however at the same time it poses a threat to our network integrity”. As a result, Aeropelican and Brindabella Airlines have been forced to re-adjust their schedules by redeploying equipment across the network and adjusting capacity. Mr Binet added: “We are not exiting any route currently served; however two services will
see their schedule adjusted to a single daily rotation. The regional communities that we serve across the ACT, New South Wales and South East Queensland are relying on our daily flights for business, medical and personal travel. This revision of the schedule ensures that we can still service the needs of these communities whilst at the same time address the pilot shortage issue”. The schedule adjustments taking effect as of Monday March 19 will see the Brisbane to Coffs Harbour flights operated by a daily 30 seat Jetstream 41 aircraft with one flight seven days a week and the Canberra to Albury service adjusted to one flight every weekday. Fabrice Binet concluded: “Capacity across all other routes will be unchanged, including our popular seasonal Snowy Mountains service.” For further information visit www. brindabellaairlines.com.au and www. aeropelican.com.au

really can’t stress how fantastic she is” she said. Dr Viggers began writing while she was still in school before studying Veterinary Science at Melbourne University. After working in a mixed animal practice for seven years Dr Viggers received her PhD from the Australian National University. Her two published books to date, The Stranding and The Lightkeeper’s Wife have been received well by critics and readers. Dr Vigger’s characterisation and writing style have received particular praise.

CROSSWORD Cryptic Clues
Young performing artists in the Snowy River Shire still have time to apply for the Tim Draxl Performing Arts Scholarship. Tim, a successful actor (A Few Best Men) and musician who grew up in the Snowy Mountains, is passionate about his community and is excited to offer the scholarship to the next generation. Designed to support young people aged 10 – 18, this scholarship offers Snowy’s young performers the opportunity to access training opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. Last year’s recipients used the funds for guitar lessons and training at NIDA, and report benefiting tremendously from the opportunity. The scholarship application can be downloaded from the South East Arts
website – southeastarts.org.au. It is also available at Jindabyne Central and Snowy Mountains Grammar Schools, and from Snowy River Shire Council’s youth development worker Meghan Quinn – 6451 1506 or Meghan.Quinn@snowyriver.nsw.gov. au. A panel of expert judges, including high-profile Australian artists, will be responsible for awarding the prize. Entries close March 16. The recipient(s) of the 2012 Tim Draxl Performing Arts Scholarship will be revealed at a gala event in Jindabyne during National Youth Week. Details to be announced. Questions about the scholarship, who is eligible and how it is judged, can be directed to Heidi Kunz on 6451 1104 or hkunz@southeastarts. org.au.

Calling Cats of Old to wear colours again As part of the annual Cooma Cats Cup and Gala Day to be held at Snowy Oval on Saturday, March 31, former Cooma Cats players over 35 years of age are being called back to the colours to take on an ACT team in the inaugural Cooma Cats Master Cup. Cats club president Dave Paterson invited all former Cats to pull on the mighty navy blue and white jumper one more time to celebrate AFL in Cooma. “This is a great chance for players from days gone by to get back down to Snowy Oval and kick the Sherrin around once more,” Dave said. “The Master Cup promises to be a highlight of the annual Cooma Cats Cup and Gala Day and we want to ensure that the Cats keep the inaugural Masters Trophy in Cooma,” he said. The Master’s Cup game will be a modified game consisting of two 20 minute halves and will be the curtain raiser to the Cooma Cats Cup and Gala Day Grand Final. The Cooma Cats Cup and Gala Day, now in its fourth year, will see last year’s champions Belconnen returning to Cooma to defend their title. The day promises to provide a feast of great local AFL action, with the first game getting underway at 9am. “Essentially, there will be games on the hour throughout the day between the participating clubs: Cooma, Woden,

You would never imagine Cooma Golf Club could be so wet as to have to take some holes out of play because they are too wet. However that is the unusual situation that golfers were presented with over the last week. On Saturday the golf club held the qualifying round for the NSW 4BBB Stableford. Qualifying for the next round were Dave Robinson and Andrew Barnes, Norm Marshall and Bart Joseph and Brian Searl with his partner Prawit Prakotasung. Ball winners went down to 25 points. Longest drives on the 18th went to Norm Marshall in A grade, George Bowden in B grade, Ricky Hanna took out C grade and Martin Gelling blitzed D grade. Nearest the pin on the ninth went to Norm Marshall and Bruce Burton took out the 17th nearest the pin with a lovely close shot. On Sunday a single stableford was conducted for both men and women. Bruce Burton won the day with 24 points with Rulie Steinfort one shot behind with Heikki Evans
on the 17th went to Tom Geach. On Wednesday March 7 the men’s single stableford saw some courageous scores in very ordinary conditions. Norm Marshall came out on top with 17 points on a countback from Campbell Childs. Ball winners went down to Dom Rossi on 15 points. Nearest the pin went to Norm Marshall. Weather permitting, next week sees the 4BBB Stableford Championships on Saturday with round three of the super stableford on Sunday. There is a single stableford the order of the day on Wednesday. Congratulations to the B grade pennant team on the three and a half to two and a half win over Queanbeyan at Cooma. Results of the A reserve pennant were not known at the time of publication. Let’s hope for some fine weather to dry out all golfers, equipment and the course this week. See you on the greens.
