Male, dob 1/1/12 Rottweiler/Mastiff X Mack is a handsome Rottweiler/Mastiff X. This big gentle boy ticks all the boxes. He is obedient, house trained, good with poultry, other dogs, cats, horses and adores children. He comes when called and walks quite well on leash. Mack is a calm boy who loves to please his careers. He has been very lonely before coming into care and loves the company of humans so he would need to be allowed indoors. He would make a wonderful pet for a family with older children (because of his size) or an individual. O924176

Two Jindabyne fire experts returned home last month after being sent to Canada to assist in fighting widespread fires across the country. Ian Dicker and Danny Corcoran are fire management officers with the National Parks and Wildlife Service Jindabyne office. Both were part of a 104 strong team of Australians and New Zealanders sent to relieve the Canadian fire fighting forces. Due to severe drought conditions, this years fire season has seen more than 3.92 million hectares burnt in 6000 fires across Canada, more than doubling the figures from last year. In one particularly day, 95 separate fires started, mainly due to lightning storms. With the drought conditions so bad, the fire behaviour was unpredictable and quickly got out of control, overwhelming the Canadian fire services. In an effort to assist in the Canadian fire services, teams from Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico and South Africa were deployed to Canada to help control the burns. Mr Corcoran was posted to British Columbia while Mr Dicker was placed in charge, along with two other NSW National Parks men, of aircraft operations for the Birch complex fires in Alberta in the far north of Canada. This complex consisted of about 10

fires, which burnt a total of 81,000 hectares. With no road access to these particular fires, Mr Dicker said it was a very challenging experience. “We were managing 15 different aircrafts and were transporting 165 fire fighters out and back each day, as well as all of their equipment and support with water bucketing, he says, “Being so far north, we had very long daylight hours. We were sending out the first helicopters at 4.30am and the sun would not set until after 10.30pm. It was originally thought that they would be over there fighting the fires for up to six weeks, however with a little bit of rain and lots of hard work, Mr Dicker was able to return after only three weeks. “We had a terrific feeling coming home, he says, “We did what we had set out to do, giving the Canadians a much needed break so that they could come back in feeling refreshed. Mr Dicker has been in fire management since 1987 and also went to the USA in 2006 to assist in fire control, but he described the Canada fires as a ‘career highlight’. “I have been very lucky in my career, he says, “I’ve done a few overseas jobs. Fire fighting is definitely an international community.

Lynch, Corbett re-elected An extraordinary meeting was held by the Cooma Monaro Shire Council on Monday afternoon at 4.30pm for the election of the position of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the period of September 2015 to September 2016. Both Mayor Dean Lynch and Deputy Mayor Rogan Corbett were re-elected to their respective positions with no other nominations presented.

The meeting also involved a review of committees, working parties and the appointment of delegates. This included the Community Services Committee which had half the staff roles cut due to a lack of staff members. The extraordinary meeting was followed by the ordinary Council meeting.

Organised by Annie O’Keeffe from the Berridale Post Office, the walk was one of 80 across Australia to raise awareness of the disappearance of the then three-year-old toddler on September 12 last year. About $1000 was raised in donation

Inquiry into elder abuse in NSW An Upper House Committee has launched an inquiry into elder abuse in New South Wales. The committee will be chaired by the Hon Greg Donnelly MLC. “In this inquiry, we are examining the abuse of some of the most vulnerable people in our community, the elderly. “The inquiry will focus on the prevalence of abuse experienced by older persons, including financial, physical, sexual and psychological abuse, as well as neglect’, said Mr Donnelly. Mr Donnelly continued “The committee is interested in hearing about the current support services available to victims of elder abuse and whether the NSW Police have adequate powers to respond to allegations. “In addition, the committee will consider the effectiveness of laws, policies and strategies to safeguard older persons’. “The committee is also considering the development of long-term measures to prevent or safeguard against abuse and to develop ways

of empowering older persons to better protect themselves’, Mr Donnelly concluded. The committee is very interested to hear people’s views on this important matter. The closing date for written submissions is Sunday November 15. The committee anticipates it will hold its first public hearing in late November, with further hearings to be held in early 2016. The committee intends to report by May 2016. For further information about the inquiry, including its terms of reference, or for more on how to make a submission, please go to our website: www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/gpsc2, or call the committee secretariat on (02) 9230 3586.

Cooma’s newest Aussies sworn in

birdsnest 2016 Cooma’s newest Australian citizens were sworn in by Mayor Dean Lynch at Monday night’s Cooma-Monaro Shire Council meeting. Our new citizens are Rosemary Beaton, Nalin De Costa Dassanayaka, Manjula Priyadarshani Subasinghe, Chanumi Devanga Dassanayaka, Thevni Himara Hasindi Dassanayaka and Duncan Mckenzie Sharpe. They are pictured with Mayor Lynch after the ceremony.

Essential Energy on job cuts Essential Energy has announced the first phase of its proposed workforce reductions for employee and union consultation. These reductions are a consequence of the regulatory determination by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). We must now commence a significant period of transformation to safely align our workforce with the AER’s cuts to our capital and operating programs for 2014-19. Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Gary Humphreys, said the regulator’s 30 per cent cut in operating expenditure had left Essential Energy without funding for an estimated 1,395 positions from 1 July 2015 – costing the business approximately $15 million per month. “Following an extensive review of business operations, Essential Energy has provided details to employees and the unions around the number of proposed unfunded positions in the first phase of workforce reductions required for our business to remain sustainable,” Gary said. “A period of consultation with potentially impacted employees has begun and will continue over coming weeks to explain processes and how they may affect individuals.” The 700 positions proposed in this first phase cover all Essential Energy regions and employee categories, and include a 20 per cent reduction in senior management positions. Almost 300 of the reductions comprise employees who have elected to take a voluntary redundancy. A second phase of reductions of a further 695 positions will be assessed once the outcome of

Essential Energy’s appeal of elements of the AER’s determination is known. This is expected in late 2015. “Our revised regulatory proposal submitted to the AER in January this year had proposed a sensible three-year transitional approach, utilising natural attrition and further productivity improvements to reduce our costs to customers. However, the AER rejected this and backdated the funding cuts to 1 July 2014, leaving 1,395 positions unfunded. Essential Energy’s network charges to customers reduced by an average of $313 per annum on July 1, ” he said. “As a consequence, we’ve got to start operating our business within the AER’s funding constraints and with fewer employees, while maintaining network safety and reliability and delivering a satisfactory level of service to our customers. “These proposed workforce reductions are regrettable yet unavoidable. We appreciate this is a difficult time for all Essential Energy employees and are committed to treating them with the highest level of respect and support throughout this process.” A new Essential Energy regional structure and other organisational changes – including the proposed consolidation of 10 under-utilised depots dentified as surplus to business requirements – were also announced. Mr Humphreys and his Executive team will hold briefing sessions with more than 3,200 employees across the State from this week to provide further information about the business transformation and provide an opportunity for feedback and questions.

Local heritage grants popular An offer of a grant to owners of heritage-listed properties has proven popular. At Monday night’s Cooma-Monaro Shire Council meeting, a report on the grants said there had been plenty of interest shown by eligible nominees. In January 2015 Council applied to the Office of Environment and Heritage for a Local Heritage Places Grant. These grants are provided each year to successful Councils and are used for work on local heritage items. Council was notified at the end of July 2015 that it had been awarded a $10,000 local heritage places grant. The grant money was to be supplemented by $10,000 from Council. This money had been set aside from savings in the Planning budget for the current financial year. As a result Council now has a pool of $20,000 of money which can be awarded on a 50/50 basis to members of the community who undertake works on heritage items. This means that, if the entire fund is spent, Council’s investment of $10,000 will be multiplied into $40,000 worth of work on local heritage items. Letters were sent to the property owners of all privately owned local heritage items in the Shire raising awareness of the grant money and inviting applications for a grant of up to $4,000 from

individuals. Information explaining the process and application forms are also now available on Council’s website. Applications will be able to be lodged between September 7 and 28. Council’s Heritage Advisor and Planning Officer will consider all applications received and make recommendations to the Planning Manager for the award of the grant money. Projects will be judged on a range of objective criteria (explained in the information on the website) with the basic aim of delivering the works which are most in the public interest in relation to the heritage items. Successful applicants will be announced in November 2015 and all projects will be required to be completed by early April 2016. It is intended to apply for a similar grant next financial year and if successful in future years Council can consider setting a theme for the particular works to be awarded for that year. The application and implementation of the Local Heritage Places Grant is consistent with actions identified in Council’s adopted Heritage Strategy 2014-17. It is also consistent with actions in Council’s Delivery Plan. In addition the grant is aimed at positively influencing community attitudes in relation to local heritage.

White Balloon Day at Daisys Childcare General Manager, JOE VESCIO

Councils Road Condition Campaign is now well underway and as most would be aware we are holding a Community Meeting on Saturday, 26 September from 3pm at the Berridale Hall. I strongly urge everyone to attend and particularly those who want to understand how the program for our road systems work, what the costs are and more importantly, what a level of service means in terms of funding and how it is allocated. It is an opportunity to get the facts. We know that this is a topic of concern to a lot of our rural residents. We know this because we see it discussed on social media. However, we remind you that if you want Council to respond to your concerns you need to contact us directly.

Local child care centre Daisys Child Care Centre joined thousands of ‘children’s champions’ last Friday, September 11 when it celebrated White Balloon Day. Held during Child Protection Week (September 6-12), the 19th White Balloon Day brought together residents, schools, governments, police, survivors, ambassadors, corporates and organisations to heighten awareness around the importance of protecting children. Pictured, Daisys children release white balloons into the air.

The Roads Conditions Survey is the perfect medium for you to let Council know the level of service you are happy with and to provide comment. As of Monday this week, we have received 123 responses but we need more and hope that more people get involved in this campaign. The survey will close on Friday 25 September.

Recycling enthusiasts ‘Pansy’ and ‘Poppy’ have been busy bees this week, spreading the message of recycling our green waste. Lynsey Nichols and Susan Burke donned their overalls for their tour of schools and preschools in the area with their new friend Gabby the Garbage Truck. The visits are part of an initiative by the Cooma Monaro Council in conjunction with the new three rubbish bin system and Coompost to give children a fun, hands-on understanding of the importance of recycling green waste. Lynsey’s husband, Trevor ‘Herb’ Nichols, has been a waste collector for over 20 years and Lynsey is a passionate artist, between them they came up with the idea to create a children’s book about recycling. Their first book was called ‘Gilbert the Garbage Truck Needs Your Help’ and their second one, ‘Gilbert and Ronnie Save Christmas’. Herb is the

I mentioned that the Country Women’s Association (CWA) most generously provided a donation towards the purchase of lights and installation costs at the Snowy River Hostel. It was specifically the Dalgety/Numbla Vale CWA who very kindly provided the donation and again we thank you for your very generous contribution to the Hostel and residents.

really great with the follow through from putting the pictures of Gilbert, Ronnie and Gabby on the trucks around town, and then by bringing these workshops to the kids, we can really get the message through,” says Lynsey. “We use a multi-modal approach by using music, story-telling, games and magic to educate the kids,” says Susan, “It’s amazing to see how quickly they get it and how well they understand the whole idea behind it.” Visiting St Patrick’s and Cooma Public School this week, ‘Pansy’ and ‘Poppy’ will also travel out to Nimmitabel, Jerangle, Bredbo and Michelago next term to spread Gabby the Garbage Truck’s message. author and Lynsey does the illustrations. Their new book is called ‘Gilbert Goes Green with Gabby’. Gabby is a new character joining Gilbert and Ronnie on their garbage processing adventures. Gabby shows kids what happens to green waste. At the school workshops, the students have seen what happens once the green waste is taken from their house and how it is turned into compost. One of the important things these workshops have shown the kids is what is possible if we participate in the correct way of recycling. There were some fun new songs and a chance to actually use some compost that Gabby has helped create by each planting their own seed. Lynsey and Susan are passionate about passing the message of recycling on to children. “The Cooma Monaro Council have been

The Bombala community is rallying together for the first ever Cancer Council Relay for Life happening in town in late November. The Relay for Life committee are excited by the amount of interest they have already received for the event, with at least 15 local teams joining so far. In an extra effort to raise funds for the Cancer Council event, each team is being given the opportunity to come along to a community garage

sale. Being held at the Bombala showground hall on Saturday 19 September between 9am and 3pm, all the money made will go towards each teams target. Not only will the sale be a great way to raise money and awareness about cancer, it’s a great opportunity for a spring clean. Members of the community are being encouraged to donate their unwanted items to be sold for the cause as well. You never know what you might find at a garage sale, so come along and see if you can grab yourself a bargain and support the local teams in their efforts to raise money for cancer. If you’d like to clean out the garage and support a good cause, give Eileen Hampshire a call on 6458 3276 to organise your contribution to the sale.

CWA Awareness week celebrated Emergency services September 5 to 12 was CWA Awareness week which the Jindabyne branch chose to celebrate in several very different ways. On Tuesday a few members enjoyed a day at Charlotte Pass, an activity which is fast becoming a fixture in their calendar. Fresh overnight snow and overcast conditions with continuous light snow falls did not deter the keen skiers in the group!! However, those fair weather skiers in the group decided that discretion was the better part of valour and stayed inside the welcoming confines of the Charlotte Pass chalet where they had a thoroughly relaxed day with a few friends. The highlight was sitting down to a wonderful High Tea with all the trimmings - fine china, scones and cucumber sandwiches – a rare treat for women whose normal role is to provide scones and cake for so many community functions throughout the year!!! A day later saw the branch present the Snowy Mountains Neighbourhood Centre with a sorely

The Goulburn man lost control in the gravel 25km north west of Adaminaby on the Snowy Mountains Highway before coming off the motorcycle. Assisting with moving some cattle, the Michelago man was thrown from his horse, suffering neck and back injuries.

needed 32 space acrylic brochure holder in recognition of the great role the Neighbourhood Centre fulfils in the community. Then on Saturday, a group from Jindabyne journeyed over to Nimmitabel to help them celebrate their International Day and to take part in that branch’s craft fair. The Nimmitabel members hosted their Jindabyne colleagues to a delightful Italian lunch, which after a morning in the sun selling lovely gifts from their craft stall was more than welcome!

A search has been concluded after two fishermen were found safe and well on Monday morning. The 45 and 31-year-old males did not return at their expected time from fishing at White Rocks on Lake Eucumbene over the weekend, sparking a search by police and other emergency services on Sunday night and Monday morning. On Sunday at 12.10pm, Michelago, Colinton and Bredbo responded to a fire on Michelago Road where a love grass burn off got out of the control of the property owner, burning 25 hectares before it was extinguished

by the fire services. One of the volunteer fire fighters had the rear window of his vehicle smashed whilst attending to the fire on Sunday between 1pm and 2.20pm. The green Subaru Outback station wagon was parked on the eastern side of the Monaro Highway near the Ryrie Hill Road intersection. If anyone has any information, the RFS asks that they contact Cooma police on 6452 0099. Nimmitabel Fire Brigade responded to a call to a fire on the Snowy Mountains Highway, 2km east of the Bombala turn off to what turned out to be a landowner burning off. Rural Fire Services would like to remind land owners that although permits are not required for fires at this time of year, they are still required to meet permit conditions. Namely, they must provide 24 hours notification to both their neighbours and the NSW RFS. RFS also asks landowners to use caution and ensure fire control strategies are in place before the match is lit.

Cooma Public dances up a storm With sold out performances, Cooma Public School put on quite the show last week with their musical Let’s Dance. Each class performed their own song ranging from classics such as Footloose, Blame it on the Boogie, Thriller,

Mamma Mia and Eye of the Tiger just to name a few. The finale saw the whole school come together to sing Walking on Sunshine for a spectacular finish to the show. The musical was held at Cooma Ex-Services club

with matinee and evening performances held on Wednesday and Thursday to an audience of 200 people each night. Cooma Public Principal Wendy Attwood said that it was a really positive experience for all. “It was great to see all the kids enjoy being involved in the musical,” she says, “The show was a real credit

to all the teachers here who put in a lot of time and effort to put together a wonderful performance.” Mrs Attwood also said that she would like to thank Grace Bligh for writing the script and coordinating the production, the many volunteers who helped with makeup, costumes, backstage and supervising the children, the Cooma Ex-Services Club and the parents and the community for all of their support.

Food safety supervisor refresher Art for Sale Projects Snowy River Shire Council advises that Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) certificates expire from September 1. To assist FSS’s with re-certification, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) approved by the NSW Food Authority (the Food Authority) are offering refresher training on food safety issues currently affecting the NSW hospitality and retail food service sector. Correct handling and cooking of food is critical to preventing foodborne illness. The Food Authority’s FSS program, which commenced in 2010, requires restaurants, cafÊs, takeaway shops, caterers, bakeries, pubs, clubs, hotels and supermarket hot food sales to have at least one trained FSS working in the food business. Under the NSW Food Act 2003, FSS certificates are current for five years from date of issue. Any person wishing to be appointed as a FSS for a food business must attain the required units of competency from an approved RTO. Attainment of the units of competency is a prerequisite to obtaining an FSS certificate. In recognition of a current FSS having existing food safety skills and knowledge, the Food

Authority engaged Charles Sturt University (RTO) to develop a refresher training program to fast track the re-attainment of units of competency and FSS certificates. Based on an analysis of compliance statistics and microbiological surveys on food safety in the retail food service sector, the Food Authority found that poor performance in three key areas —allergen management, handling eggs safely, and cleaning and sanitising— often contributed to foodborne illness outbreaks. As a result, the refresher training has been designed to enhance knowledge in these key areas. Food businesses have 30 working days to make sure their appointed FSS participates in the refresher training and obtains a new FSS certificate. By doing so, they will continue to promote and support a highly skilled and compliant retail food sector in NSW. For further information, visit the website at www.foodauthority.nsw.qov.au/retail/fssfoodsafety-supervisors or call the helpline on 1300 552 406, or email contact@foodayuthority.nsw.gov. au

Men’s Sheds funding available Member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Peter Hendy, has encouraged the local Men’s Sheds in Jindabyne, Cooma, Bombala and Nimmitabel to take advantage of the Coalition Government’s Father’s Day announcement to secure funding for the organisation until 2019. Dr Hendy said round 11 of the National Shed Development Programme was currently open and the sheds could apply for up to $8,000 in funding. Applications for round 11 close on September 18. “Our local sheds play a very important role in our community to keep men active and contributing to their mental health and physical wellbeing, Dr Hendy said. “To provide certainty, the Abbott Government has guaranteed funding for Men’s Sheds for a further three years to 2019. “The decision to guarantee funding will allow Men’s Sheds to maintain their shed, buy new tools or start new projects. It’s great news for the sheds and the men who use them. The $4.5 million commitment over the next three

years will also assist the Australian Men’s Sheds Association to develop and maintain relationships and linkages with health providers and employ strategies to more effectively reach and engage men. Dr Hendy said Men’s Sheds reduce social isolation, particularly for older men and people living in rural and remote areas. Applications for grants are assessed by the Australian Men’s Shed Association, in accordance with guidelines agreed by the Department of Health. All sheds are eligible to apply for funding under the National Shed Development Programme (NSDP). Grants are awarded on a competitive basis up to a total of $8,000 (GST exclusive), with priority given to sheds in disadvantaged areas. Round 11 of the NSDP is currently open for applications. Sheds are able to apply for up to a total of $8,000 across three funding categories – tools, equipment, community projects and training; building maintenance and development; and health improvement activities.

A beautiful early spring day greeted the Autumn Leaves Group at the Berridale hall where we commenced by catching up with friends and sharing a lovely morning tea. It was wonderful to see Joyce Dwyer back with the group who was warmly greeted by her Autumn Leaves family. Creativity, fun and learning new skills were evident with our ‘terrific tyre retread’ and ‘doily dream catcher’ art projects progressing beautifully. After a delicious pork roast lunch and chocolate pudding dessert skilfully created by the Berridale Red Cross, we settled in for our afternoon session. ‘Your favourite movie’ was our theme and there were many stories and memories shared. Some of the favourite movies of the group included Casablanca, Seven Brides for Seven

Brothers and Gone with the Wind. The 50 top movie quotes quiz and photo collage of famous movie stars got our memories going. A great day was had by all - why not join us sometime? The Autumn Leaves Group meet on the first and third Wednesday of the month at various towns in the Snowy River Shire. There are individual Lunch Clubs in Jindabyne, Berridale and Adaminaby on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. We also have Men’s Groups, Mystery tours and other special projects that support you to keep learning and stay connected in your community. Please consider planting a few extra vegies to take advantage of this demand.

At the October market we will run our annual Duck Race. Tickets, for $5, are available from the September market, or Leading Edge Electronics, the Fabric Salon or the Cooma Visitors Centre. Riposte Lisa Ashurst It seems a nasty little thing called revenge porn is gaining in popularity among exes who want to do as much damage to their former partners as they can get away with and let’s face it, sharing intimate pics of one’s former love is certainly a sure-fire way to achieve that. But I’ve touched on the X rated photo subject before in this column and am still of the same opinion; if they are the kind of pics that you would Most Definitely Not Want your friends, family or workmates to see, then sweetheart... Don’t Pose For Them! For the umpteenth time, there are absolutely No Guarantees that those consensual photographs that were to be kept just between the two of you will never see the light of day via social media! Like, how do you know your partner won’t show them around anyway, breakup or not?

Well that’s the problem, isn’t it? You don’t know. You may only find out one day should the relationship goes south and you find yourself an Internet sensation for all the wrong reasons. Now, why would you want to even go there? This is what happens, okay! But hey, if you consented to the pics in the first place then like it or not, you have to share some of the blame if you suddenly find you’ve become the C grade pornography starlet that you never wanted to be. Revenge porn has become so common these days that the powers that be are looking at making it a criminal offence and so they should. It’s mean, it’s nasty and if you think you’ll be able to live it down in time, then you should think again. Your family, friends, workmates and (god forbid!) your employer are not likely to forget should they come across the images and even if you are the victim of unauthorised

exposure, the only thing they’ll remember is that you posed for them in the first place. Look, when couples split at least one of them is going to be upset and they’re going to experience the usual grief, followed by the usual angry feelings towards the one who rejected them, that’s normal, but if they just happen to have some images that could really cause their former partner some serious hurt and embarrassment then chances are they are going to make good use of them and once uploaded.. But I’m not the first one to write about this and guaranteed I won’t be the last, so why do people continue to place themselves in such compromising positions? Admittedly a small percentage may not mind the exposure all that much but on the whole, most shudder at the thought. Once it’s out there, it’s out there, hon! Which brings me back to where I began. Regardless of how sure you feel you are of your partner and the strength of your relationship, please, please, please Do Not pose for those X rated shots and positively Do Not star in your own XXXX rated mini films because you can never really be sure who might end up seeing them! You should think about that.

Leo Club warms up Monaro High students The Monaro High School Leo Club has been serving hot chocolates every Friday morning during term three to warm up fellow students during the chilly winter mornings. The weekly hot chocolate stalls have proved quite popular, and have allowed the Leo Club to raise money for an important cause. All proceeds of the hot chocolate sales will be donated to the ACT & NSW Cystic Fibrosis group, who supports people in the Monaro region by providing medicines, medical procedures and equipment. The Leo Club also recently supported the Sunraysia Leo Club in Victoria who conducted a 9 Day Tractor Trek to raise money for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. These causes are chosen by the students of the Leo Club who meet during break 1 every Thursday at Monaro High School. The Cooma Lions Club is proud of the efforts of the Monaro High School Leo Club

Leo Advisor Lee Riley is looking at innovative ways to allow young people to participate in a service club and be involved in their community without being obligated to attend regular meetings. Instead, the club will conduct most of its business online and organise one or two projects per year as well as supporting the Cooma Lions Club in some of their activities. Community members aged 18-30 who may be interested in this opportunity to join a network of clubs worldwide, make a difference in their community and gain leadership skills and other opportunities, are encouraged to contact Lee Riley via email at: lee.riley@live.com.au

New book explores the Bundian Way

HUGE BIRTHDAY SALE FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER WE ARE GIVING 40% OFF EVERYTHING IN THE GIFT SHOP.

A crowd of about 40 locals came to the Cooma library on Saturday morning September 5 for the launch of John Blay’s book ‘On Track: searching out the Bundian Way’. Mr Blay gave an interesting talk about his book, which is about the Bundian Way Aboriginal walking track. The Bundian Way stretches about 390km from Twofold Bay near Eden to the Kosciuszko high country. Ancient Aboriginal traditions had the communities walk this trail to take part in the whaling season on the coast and the Bogon moth season up in the mountains. Mr Blay first started researching the Bundian Way back in 2001. It became heritage listed in 2013, and is set to become one of Australia’s greatest walking tracks with many art galleries and historical information displayed along the way for the public to enjoy. Pictured author, naturalist and walker John Blay at the Cooma Library on Saturday. Sepember 5. Below, the new book.

The Men march centenary The Delegate Progress Association is very proud to facilitate a re-enactment march to commemorate the centenary of the Men From Snowy River route march. This march was one of nine known as the snowballing recruitment marches. More information here http://www.cooeemarch.org.au/ We believe these marches are one of the most important historical events in Australia’s short history and it is very important to educate future generations about the commitment not only by those who joined, but also by the community they left, some to never return and all that did scarred by physical and emotional wounds. conflict’s like WW1 never happen again. As the original group passed through each town on their way from Delegate to Goulburn (on foot) they were treated to civic receptions, entertainment and lavish ‘supers’. We have organised a parade and

reception in all the remaining towns along the route. Snowliners’ Russian Adventure Part five Saturday and we arrive at Kizhi Island, famed for its collection of wooden churches and chapels and the 22 timbered onion domes on the Church of Transfiguration. While inside the church we are honoured by singing from three local brethren. Both a winter and a summer church. Natalia our guide talks about living in this area of Russia and finishes by saying in the winter you have a fur coat done up and in the summer you have a fur coat undone, we have been so fortunate with the weather, many days in short sleeves. Local ladies are seen weaving and embroidering. The embroidery is perfect on both sides and done by heart. A sauna, located on the banks of the lake, used daily and then you jump in the lake water. You might have to cut a hole in the ice during the winter, but this is a daily occurrence for our guide. In the morning we enjoy painting a Matryoshka doll, well start in any case, it certainly makes you appreciate the skill of the local artisans - getting the paint to dry is difficult. The afternoon has us participating in traditional Russian doll making, towel folding or visiting the Bridge to make sure the Captain knows where we are going! And just in case you are hungry an ice-cream party is upstairs. A typical Russian meal is being served tonight. Back in St Petersburg we were told about beef stroganoff and how the young Count Stroganoff lost his right arm but loved to eat steak so the cook designed a meal for him so steak could still be enjoyed - welcome beef stroganoff - oh to have the recipe. And the mosquitoes are big enough to carry you away! The water is always brown looking but I suspect this is tannin seeping in. We quite often come across barges of timber heading downstream or stockpiles of timber beside the river. Vegetation is right down to

the water’s edge and the towns along the way are also on the water’s edge. You would not walk far into the timber and be lost. So many different shades of green, so many different sizes and types of trees. The area where we have been travelling has over a thousand islands, many just dots in the water others with thriving communities. Today is Father’s Day in Russia so all the men have been given a (small) bottle of vodka. Currently in the lounge they are having a vodka tasting session. Sunday we had a short visit to Goritsy and the Monastery of Resurrection. This site was one of, historically, the most important as well as wealthiest male monasteries in Russia. Built in the 1400’s on display today was exquisite lace work and some was even for sale but at over $2,000 for a lace jacket it was a bit out of my price range. Sadly the Monastery is in a poor state of repair. Monday arrives as we continue to sail downstream to Yaroslavl. The weather is perfect, expected to be 26 today (I hear you have the great Monaro fogs on top of frosts). We notice strips of garages along the river bank. First thought is they are boat sheds but then we notice some are on slopes and have tracks leading to the water. We decide that within the shed is another shed that they push out on to the frozen river during the winter, dig a hole in the ice, and fish. This afternoon after travelling along the Volga River we arrived at Yaroslavl, more touring, more listening to guides who have so much knowledge to share but our brains have reached overload and we are taking a lot less in. Temperatures are mid 20’s, extremely hot for Russia. The highlight of this afternoon

was seeing so many lacquer boxes and having the process explained. One small piece can take months to complete. I have been having a real session with asthma and pollen allergies and wind aggravation. To those of you who liberally spray perfume and aftershave on before going out can you, in future, have consideration for the allergy sufferer and not spray so much. The mixture of perfume in the dining room is overpowering and some of the trees that are just coming out in blossom, well I can only say thank goodness I am not here in a week or so. Tuesday is Uglich, one of the oldest areas in central Russia. Photos, singing by a local group, purchasing local souvenirs, all part of the days experience. Local traders were there to sell there wares to tourists. Another lock, this time big enough for two vessels at the same time. More sumptuous food and tonight is the Captains’ Farewell Reception, even though we still have five nights on board.

Last night I was having the best of sleeps when a thumping wakes me - how dare they start partying at 1.54am!! Imagine my surprise when two amongst us tell of their experience last night. Suzanne and Vern’s cabin is next to mine and last night Suzanne woke to water dripping on her, she got a towel had held it for awhile but decided she best get help. Down to reception, up comes two maintenance men (who don’t speak a word of English), Vern is now awake but still laying in bed. Two roof sheets above their bed are removed and down comes litres of water. So at two o’clock in the morning beds have to be changed and a roof has to be repaired, so no wonder I woke to a thumping noise. Suzanne says it was all done so professionally, of course management were very embarrassed - just one of the odd things that can happen while away. Today passengers are judging the best Matryoshka doll, there are about 25 on display, all beautiful in their own way. The weather is so good when we come across a little beach area there are locals out enjoying the day either by way of swimming (well the children anyway), sun baking or fishing. Continued next week

Steers sell to $3.48 cents a kilo at Cooma sale The Cooma Special Cattle sale held last Thursday attracted around 200 head of principally light to medium weight weaners. There was also several pens of heavier butcher types and these sold at competitive rates. live weight returning $616.46 weighing only 177kg. A very smart line of four year old Angus cows and calves fetched $1700 a head after strong bidding. A small yarding of fats saw cows to $2.40c kg returning $1300, trade steers returning $1,064 and vealers up to $1,245 a head. This new sale approach proved that vendors can achieve excellent results for their cattle through the local saleyards.

Lamb prices are higher

Lamb prices are well ahead of the same time last year and are expected to average 1.2 per cent higher this financial year compared with last year, at 523.75c/kg, despite spring lamb production in the next month or so placing pressure on prices in the short term. National Australia Bank (NAB) Agribusiness Head of Victoria and Tasmania Neil Findlay says the latest Commodity In Focus report shows that the Eastern States Trade Lamb Indicator is approaching its highest levels since 2011, and has remained steady during the winter months. “Moderately higher prices have

been sustained even as supply has increased over the past year, with slaughter rates elevated for much of 2014 and into early 2015, especially from Victoria,” Mr Findlay said. “However, we have held the view for some time that the current higher slaughter levels, underpinned by increasing turn off rates as a proportion of total flock, are not sustainable. “We are still around a month away from the major spring flush of lambs and we think nationally supply will be slightly weaker, with a forecast 1.0 per cent decline in production in 2015-16.

Maximising your native ground cover

Farm injuries A new approach is being taken to reduce deaths and injuries in Australia’s primary industries, tackling attitudes and beliefs rather than relying on workers to memorise procedures. The Primary Industries Health and Safety Partnership (PIHSP) is funding a trial project in the fishing industry, with the aim of extending it to on-shore industries if successful. While there have been many safety improvements over recent years, the marine sector remains one of the most dangerous workplaces, losing more than 800 working weeks to injury for every 1,000 employees over the period 2008/9 to 2011/12 . IHSP R&D Advisory Panel Chair, Gordon Gregory, says similar approaches have been successfully employed in industries such as mining and offshore drilling. “Many primary industries operate in inherently dangerous environments, often with a transient workforce. While there’s been a significant improvement over recent years, there are still too many people being killed and injured, Mr Gregory said. “We have to go beyond compliance and develop

a culture where safe work practices are simply the ‘done thing’ and staff are motivated and committed to changing their behaviour. The PIHSP is partnering with NPF Industry Pty Ltd, the representative body for operators in the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF), with delivery by Sentis through a cognitive-based safety program to initiate this cultural shift – the “High Performing & Safe Teams program. This program has been rolled out to 80 NPF crew members at six separate workshops in July, and their safety attitudes and actions will be monitored over the coming months. The success of the Sentis High Performing & Safe Teams Program for these crew members could be the catalyst for a change in the way farming, fishing and forestry industries embrace safety in the workplace. The PIHSP is funded by the Research and Development Corporations for the meat processing, cotton, grains, fishing and livestock industries as well as the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. For more information visit www.rirdc.gov.au/PIHSP

Participants and presenters at the workshop. A Native pasture, grasslands & weed control was held on Sunday, September 6 at ‘Eureka’, Numeralla. The community-based, widespread weed project for the Numeralla district was the focus of the workshop. Residents were urged to help their community develop a community weed plan that enables effective, collective action. Supporting communities to manage fireweed and other widespread weeds through collective action. The workshop and paddock walk: ¡ Introduced a widespread weed project being run in the area. ¡ Showed who to work together to identify weed distributions in the

Numeralla region. ¡ Demonstrated how to assess native pasture and ground-cover composition, and how to establish and enhance native groundcover. ¡ Looked at some alternative methods to herbicide for weed management The project is a partnership between the South East Local Land Services and the NSW Weeds Action Program, with the support of local councils. It is designed to trial an approach to managing widespread weeds which deliberately aims to support local communities to develop their own ability, capacity and skills in managing widespread weeds at the local level. A key output is developing an agreed

community widespread weed plan, to be developed via a series of planned workshops, which cover general concepts of widespread weed management, alongside topics of interest identified by the local community. The delivery of the project itself is designed to support the community to develop and enhance skills and experiences in working together and to create a safe place to discuss widespread weed issues. The project is being piloted in three areas in SE NSW – Tilba Tilba, Numeralla and Bungendore. Attendees to workshops and interested parties are asked to fill out a pre and post project survey. The survey can be accessed electronically here: widespreadweeds.questionpro.com

Sheep and lamb sales begin Wild dog community meetings report

Cooma Associated Agents have started their annual sheep and lamb selling season with a good yarding at Cooma saleyards yesterday.

Parliament congratulated for passing bill to protect agriculture NSW Farmers has welcomed the passage of the Biosecurity Bill (2015) through the NSW Parliament securing NSW’s leadership status in protecting the state’s $12 billion agriculture industry from disease, pests and weeds. Association President Derek Schoen congratulated the government for its extensive consultation with NSW Farmers and parliament for recognising the importance of the Bill - a giant leap forward for biosecurity in NSW. “The passing of this Bill ensures the state retains its internationally renowned clean and green image when it comes to food and fibre production, he said. “Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair is to be congratulated for his leadership and consultation on this bill. “Not only will this legislation strengthen our protocols and protection against biosecurity threats, it will also raise community awareness about the importance of protecting our enviable biosecurity status. “We particularly welcome the formalisation of the framework of a shared responsibility.

“Agriculture is set to be one of the key pillars of NSW’s economic base over the coming decades. But to fulfil that promise we must be vigilant in protecting our status as the state that produces the safest food. “Our association recognises that lifting the visibility on the importance of biosecurity will be a challenging task. It will require higher levels of community engagement and more extension to farmers to ensure that we all know the importance of biosecurity. “I also recognise the sensible and constructive contribution by Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Mick Veitch who put biosecurity above partisan politics. “We look forward to working with government on the regulations and ensuring that the promise of this new framework can be brought to life across the state, Mr Schoen concluded.

Wild dog community workshops held in Cooma, Braidwood and Mittagong earlier this year. The workshops were well attended with 58 rural community and agency representatives at Cooma, 35 at Braidwood and 41 at Mittagong. General Manager South East Local Land Services, Derek Larsen, said he was able to attend the Cooma and Braidwood workshops and really appreciated the opportunity to hear first-hand the issues graziers face and their vision for the future. In June 2015 the South East Local Land Services Board approved a number of proposals which can be implemented in the short term to improve wild dog management. These include: ¡ having one person supervise the Pest Animal Controllers (PACs) to ensure consistency of management and better communication ¡ ensuring that the provisions of the award are properly used so that PACs have the flexibility to do their job ¡ ensuring that other impediments to the PACs doing their job are as far as possible removed. This includes for example unnecessary restrictions on home garaging of vehicles. The Board is finalising its longer-term approaches for wild dog management and in doing so it is considering a draft strategy on wild dog management in the South East Local Land Services. The recommendations in the report have taken into account the outcomes of the workshops. While there were differences between

the three workshops, a number of common themes emerged and are being considered by the South East Local Land Services Board: ¡ The importance of the pest animal controllers to wild dog control and the need to ensure their security of tenure, career paths and training. ¡ The need for certainty in resourcing wild dog management plans ¡ The central importance of the wild dog working groups and the associated niltenure approach to planning. This includes ongoing commitment by all parties to the implementation of the plans ¡ The need for enhanced communication within individual plans, between plans and to the wider community and government. This includes a desire for improved and transparent reporting arrangements ¡ Mechanisms are needed to engage with landholders in dog affected areas who are not directly affected. These groups include life stylers, absentee owners and in some cases cattle producers ¡ The importance of consistent reporting and common data systems for agencies. The workshops considered the desirability of establishing a Wild Dog Community Advisory Group and appointing a Wild Dog coordinator. Reactions to these proposals were mixed and in some cases views strongly held, both for and against. The South East Local Land Services Board aims to finalise its considerations in October after which Mr Larsen intends to provide the strategy document to the wild dog community.

the

postman calls

Twenty-fours can be a long time in politics, just ask Tony Abbott. This latest ousting of a Prime Minister by his own party just serves to prove that politicians really are only in it for their own aggrandisement and profit.

Same scenario, different party. It’s all very disconcerting. Whatever happened to the notion that politics was a vocation, not a career? At least locally, we can generally rely on the status quo. Monday night’s mayoral election for Cooma-Monaro Shire had a predictable result.

Congratulations to Cr Lynch and Cr Corbett on their re-election. At the time of going to press, Bombala Council was preparing to vote for its mayor for the next 12 months. The Postman suspects it would be “London to a Brick on” that Bob Stewart will be re-elected unopposed tonight.

Generosity of neighbours Editor, I would be most grateful if the following story could be published in your publication in relation to our recent move from our home at Buckenderra. The problems we encountered and the unbelievable assistance rendered by complete strangers, acknowledgement of their persistance, grit and determination should not go without public recognition. It was Friday afternoon around 2.30pm. After loading the Pantech and trailer in a steady drizzle, the removalists were ready to depart for Queensland, and so was my wife and I. Unfortunately in attempting to hitch the trailer, the Pantech became bogged, not badly but enough to lose all traction. After a quick check of the yellow pages, I was informed that a tow truck would not help the situation after heavy snow falls and 100mm rain. The ground would be very marginal “you need a dozer or 4WD tractors mate” was the advice. It was then, I recalled a fellow named Siddle, a local “truckie”. I’ll call him for some advice. “Hello Molly here” she explained Keith was on a job, but she would bring her landcruiser and see if she could render some assistance. It’s now 4.30pm, the rain hasn’t eased and a grey misty darkness starts to envelope us. Molly arrives, out with heavy chains and manages to reposition the heavy loaded trailer. Great job, but sorry Ray I can’t attempt the truck as it has a dangerous lean. Not to worry I’ll ring for back up, back up from where? It’s 5.30pm dark, wet and cold. Lights ablazing Deryk Cook, a

local farmer arrives in a 4WD tractor, immediately the agitated truck driver excitedly attempts to tell Deryk what to do with his tractor, now I quickly learn that Deryk does not like being told what to do. He retorted, “Listen mate, you bogged the truck! I’ll get it out MY WAY!” End of argument. Minutes later true to his word, the truck is out free and connected to the trailer, 6.30pm looks like we are on our way north. The combination turns right and slowly settles to the axles in thick mud. Molly where is Molly, by this time Keith Siddle arrives and suggests we need another 4WD tractor. Molly’s on the phone again, and an hour later rain intensifing, red lights flashing, after driving 12kms Stuart Reid arrives in another big red tractor springs from it’s cabin, surveys the situation with Keith and Deryk. “Lets hook them up in tandem”..its now after 9pm. On three occasions the truck sinks to its belly. These Cooma farmers not once took defeat, they dug, they timbered up the gaping torn earth, the chains snapped taught time and time again. The immovable truck teetered moaned and creaked as the tractors churned the ground seeking traction. Finally at 10.30pm they heaved it onto solid ground. No complaining, no dinner, no request for compensation, these strangers came to our aid. This collective group of Australians best demonstrated the incredible spirit of the farming community. My wife and I will always remain in their debt, to them all, a huge thank you. Ray and Virginia Browne Wedgetail

Salvos need assistance Editor, The Rural Fire Service is advising the community that the coming summer period will be a summer of high bushfire risk. The Salvation Army Emergency service, Cooma Corps, is responsible for co-ordinating the catering to the victims and the people involved in managing disasters. Our role in the past has mainly been catering to the RFS. We are in need of volunteers (male and female) to carry out these tasks. Should you be interested in participating with the SAES please

contact me on 0401508192 or Captain Louise Nicholson on 6452 1798 during business hours. We anticipate that we will be having an induction/training day on September 26. We would appreciate your response as soon as possible to allow us to make the necessary arrangement for that day. George Bowden Corps Co-ordinator The SAES Cooma Corps

A rare piece of Cooma’s history in immaculate condition

Beautifully located with an elevated position looking north over the Cooma township and beyond, this magnificent period home offers outstanding space along with all the features that stand out in homes constructed in the early 1900s. FEATURES INCLUDE: • A substantial double brick residence, immaculately maintained and restored with a striking street appeal and will be sure to grab your attention • A large central hall way immediately stands out on entering this home, leading into formal dining and lounge areas • A very spacious family living room with a feature fire place and great light from Northern windows • The option of 5 spacious bedrooms + an office, or 4 with a second living area • A major feature of this home is the fully ducted

But this home is a comfortable living environment through both Winter and summer • A magnificent sun filled kitchen, with loads of space along with a large walk in pantry • Another great living space is the large internal verandah which allows room to spread out • 2 modern bathrooms and a large separate indoor laundry • Outside the property covers 1760 sqm of level land, fully fenced and great for families. • Also the added bonus of the old maids quarters, which will offer the potential for a granny flat or excellent space for the kids to make a mess! Homes of this stature are rarely seen on the market in Cooma.

HOLIDAYS! To give everyone a heads up, I am going to be on leave in September for around 3 weeks, so if you have been thinking of meeting up for a chat, now is the time to call! INVESTMENT MARKET CHANGES There has been a lot of changes in the market recently, with Lenders aiming to manage their investment loan levels. This has resulted in a lot of policy changes by the Lenders, with some increasing rates on investment property loans, some reducing the loan ratio (meaning you need to have a higher deposit),and some making changes to the interest only option. If you are looking at getting into the investment property market, it is now more important than ever to talk to someone who is aware of these changes, and give you guidance on

Austin Beck takes Science Hat Trick! When the results of this year’s RACI Chemistry Quiz were released last week, Snowy Mountains Grammar School student Austin Beck was on a hat trick. Austin, who is in Year 9, had attained High Distinctions in the other two science competitions that SMGS enters every year: the University of NSW ICAS Science Competition and Australian Science Innovation’s Big Science Competition. In the former, Austin had achieved a result placing him in the top one percent of students undertaking the competition. It was with great excitement when the Chemistry Quiz results were revealed, because Austin got his hat trick and achieved a High Distinction in this competition as well. In fact, his High Distinction placed

him in the top seven percent of students undertaking the Chemistry Quiz. To achieve three High Distinctions in a row is a significant academic achievement. For Austin, who narrowly missed out last year (he “only” achieved a Distinction in the ICAS Science Competition), it is a reflection of his fascination with Science. “I am proud of my results and surprised at this success,” said Austin. “I am motivated to achieve in Science, mainly because I find it extremely interesting. However, my science teacher, Dr. Nelson, has also played a major part in my success and I thank him greatly for this. I only hope that I can continue to achieve at this high level into the future,” he added.

What a showcase! Monaro Dance Centre Competed at Showcase regional Dance Championships last week. A total of 17 students performed in group, solo and duo routines. All group routines placed in each section. Under 12’s received 1st and 2nd for contemporary, 2nd for Jazz. Under 14’s received 1st and 3rd for Contemporary and 4th for Jazz. All solo routines received gold and high gold awards based on scoring out of 100 marks. Our duo partners Brady Jones and Tayla Robinson placed 4th in Under 14 Contemporary. Tayla Robinson has been selected to compete in the Dancer of the Year category at Nationals held on the Gold Coast in January. A choreography award was given to Monaro Dance Centre for a contemporary routine ‘Mad World’ choreographed by Monaro Dance Centre’s principal, Kayla Bogatek. ‘We have entered Canberra regional’s showcase since it started in 1998. Every year dance students from Cooma, Jindabyne and Bombala compete against students from Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne and without fail, receive amazing results. Once again, all 24 routines entered by Monaro Dance Centre this year have made it onto Nationals in January’. ‘It’s times like this, we understand that the hours students spend at the studio rehearsing has made it worth while. All students should be very proud of what they have achieved’

Plans well underway for Nimity Bell unveiling in October There will be lots of activities to follow and we are looking forward to welcoming back many former residents of the town. The school and pre-school children are holding an art show in Will and Caroline Jardine’s Juliets building, with a jumping castle and face painting as well, to make this a real kids corner for the day. Nearly 60 families have contributed funding for the Bell, which is an overwhelming response and the Lions Club wants to really thank everybody for their wonderful generosity. Any donor who hasn’t sent their money in yet, please do so and ensure that the Lions have the exact spelling of the donors names for the plaque. Nimmitabel has just held a wonderfully enthusiastic meeting to coordinate the activities for the Nimmitabel Lions Nimity Bell Festival, which is planned for the unveiling of the Nimity Bell on 31st October. The Bell will be unveiled and rung, at midday by Member for Monaro John Barilaro MP and Mayor Dean Lynch. This will be followed by a peal of all the Bells in town, the two Church bells, the School and the Police bells. We may even have Canberra’s Bell-Ringers to follow up and the Cooma Town Band as well!

Cannell’s team takes out club fours

Before getting the Bill Elder Shield underway last Wednesday, Peter reported on the recent Special General Meeting of the Cooma Travelling Bowlers. It was decided to wind up the organisation and disburse the funds as follows. Cooma Country and Bowling Club $4517 to be paid off the Bank Loan, $1500 to each of Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre, Cooma Hospital Auxiliary and Monaro Committee for Cancer Research. The fourth round of Bill Elder Shield attracted 20 players. Judy Locker, Peter Harris and Ev Hamilton had much the better of the early ends against Skip Hamilton, Russell Fox and Geoff Venables to lead 14/5 after 13 ends. From that point on it was a real contest with Judy, Peter and Ev winning 21/11. Mary Phillips, Mick Mayhew and Paul Cannell were right on the spot in winning seven of the first nine ends against Sergio Roncelli, Keith Goodwin and Hazel Walker to lead 16/10. Sergio, Keith and Hazel fared a little better for the next nine ends and were in with a chance at 17/22 but dropped a two and a seven to give Mary, Mick and Paul a well earned win 31/19. Mario Frezza, Mary Boller and Kevin

Jackson were ambushed by Mike Mannile, Bob Douglass and Renate Winckel to trail 3/13 on end 11 and did not fare much better for the remainder of the game going down 5/24. Allan Crowe and Ron Wainwright were cruising at 19/6 against Ken Rees and Giulio D’Amico. Giulio apparently was not aware that killing an end incurred a penalty of five shots and promptly killed two and allowed their opposition 10 shots and victory 29/7. The 10 leaders as at end of September with points and shot margin are; Renate Winckel 10 +27, Olga Jebbink 9 +25, Paul Cannell 8 +26, Judy Locker 8 + 15, Geoff Venables 8 + 13, Peter Harris 8 + 9, Allan Crowe 8 + 7, Mario Frezza 8 – 16, Mary Boller 8 – 28 and Bob Douglass 7 + 21. Club Fours commenced on Saturday with changes to some teams from that originally entered. Ron Wainwright, Denis Steinfort, Brian Seears and Paul Cannell was one such team who opposed Peter Harris, Richard Nichols, Peter Caldwell and Mark Buckley. Paul’s team set up a winning lead when the went to the front 15/2 on seven and were never headed in winning 28/22. The team of Keith Goodwin as a sub, Ken Rees, Peter Marsicano

and Neil McGregor was completely reorganised and came up against Allan Crowe, Bob Douglass, Don Jarvis and Geoff Venables who held a slight 11/10 lead on end 12. Five shots on 13 and four on 15 for Neil’s team proved the turning point with them going on to win 23/17. Jack Sajina, Mick Mayhew, Colin Roberson and Kim Weston scored six shots on the third end against Sergio Roncelli, Mario Frezza, John Vincent and Giulio D’Amico and followed up with consistent bowling to again score six on end 10 to take a commanding lead 19/6. Giulio’s team mounted a comeback but the start was too much with Kim’s team winning 24/19.

Spring Shield decided Cooma Golf report by Garry Atkinson Last week at Cooma Golf Club saw some hot golf on Saturday and on Sunday with the 36 hole Spring Shield up for grabs. All competition days were in near perfect golfing conditions. All in all a very busy week of golf. Saturday saw round one of the 4BBB Spring Shield. Our winners on the day were Frank McKnight and Doug Parker with a fine 48 stableford points from Heikki Evans and Brian Searl on 47. Bob Ashcroft hit a great shot to take the nearest the pin on the ninth and Sean Smith continued his accurate form to win the 17th. Ball winners went down to 44 points. Dave Goggin took out the A grade long drive with Mike Introna winning B grade. C grade big hitter for the day was Greg Abraham. On Sunday Cooma Golf Club saw round two of the Spring Shield played. There was plenty of pressure on the leaders with only a couple of shots separating the top four teams. In the end Frank McKnight and Doug Parker took out the coverted trophy with a fine 93 points (45 on Sunday) from Dieter Seubert and Rob O’Farrell with 89 points. Interestingly 89 points won the event last year. Individual team winners on Sunday were Dieter Seubert and Rob O’Farrell with a fine 46 points. Nearest the pin on the ninth was won by Vic Carroll and on the 17th Adam Robinson hit a shot really close. Wednesday September 9 saw a single medley stableford contested in three grades.

So the stage was set for the Semifinals at 9.30am on Sunday; with Neil McGregor’s team playing Paul Cannell’s team and Kim Weston’s team playing John Barnes, Mike Mannile, Terry George and John Schoon who had a bye into the Semifinal. In Kim Weston’s team Wayne Lodge replaced Colin Roberson. In this match the score was 6/6 on nine when Mike, John, Terry and John commenced a run which took hem to 14/7 and eventually win 20/13. Ron Wainwright, Denis Steinfort, Brian Seears and Paul Cannell were in front 8/7 against Keith Goodwin, Ken Rees, Peter Marsicano and Neil

McGregor when they dropped four shots to give Neil and Co the lead for the first time. Their joy was short lived as Paul and Co scored a four two ends later and went on to win 19/15. The final was a close battle to 8/8 when Ron, Denis, Brian and Paul scored a three and with consistent play extended their lead to 22/10 on 16 and were able to counter any moves by their opponents to go on and win the match 23/15 and the Fours Championship for 2015/16. Twelve social bowlers enjoyed the great weather. Rene Ronken, Maureen D’Amico and Margherita Zasso were cruising until they dropped five shots against Darren McCourley, Wendy King and Dawn Russell on six to give the latter a slight lead, which was extended to 17/12 on 15 take the lead and went on to win 21/18. Red Energy supports Group 16 A major sponsorship deal between Group 16 Rugby League, Red Energy and the Country Rugby League will see an innovative scheme named the ‘High Performance Training Squads’ rolled out across major towns in the south-eastern NSW over the next few months. The scheme is aimed at 15 to 17 year old players involving a series of one day camps that will include high performance coaching to cover elite level rugby league skills, training, nutrition and drug and alcohol awareness. ‘Its ground breaking stuff’ Group 16 President Dean lynch has said. ‘Not only will we see these camps enhancing the skills of existing young rugby league players in our area, but

they will also offer the chance for any new kids to discover how involvement in sport can complement their life’. The program kicks off in Eden on the 20th of September with the dates as follows: Pambula: 20th September Bega: 25th October Narooma: 7th November Moruya/Batemans Bay: 28th November Cooma/Bombala: 12th December ‘We are excited to be supporting Group 16 and the local youth within the Region’ Red Energy Chief Executive Officer

Iain Graham has said. ‘We are calling this program ‘Sports Not Courts’ because we believe the more kids who are involved in sport, the more likely they are to lead a healthy lifestyle and potentially keep out of trouble’. Paddy Pallin Junior Cross Country Ski Event Snow, sunshine and smiles were the order of the day for the Paddy Pallin Junior cross country ski event held on Saturday 5 September 2015. Having been postponed from the beginning of the July school holidays due to a lack of snow, the weather gods certainly turned on a show and there was plenty of snow and sunshine to go around. Thirty one participants, ranging in age from 2 years to 16 years, competed over varying distances from 50 metres to three kilometres, with multiple laps on a one kilometre loop ensuring excellent view points for spectators. As the oldest

cross country ski event still being held in Australia, it was wonderful to see a broad spectrum of abilities and ages, including a number of participants who are the second generation of previous Paddy Pallin junior competitors. The traditional lunch of hot dogs, fruit drinks and fruit was enjoyed by all competitors and helpers post event at the Nordic Shelter, followed by the presentation of certificates and spot prizes, which were generously donated by Paddy Pallin. For the final event of the day, the children were organised into teams of varying ages for the jelly snake hunt on skis, with the

winning team coming away with a hefty handful of jelly snakes to share amongst themselves! The Paddy Pallin Junior organisers extend many thanks to the sponsors, parents and friends who helped make it such a successful and enjoyable day. Special thanks to Paddy Pallin for providing the great spot prizes, hotdogs, drinks and jelly snakes, Wiffens Canberra for the fruit, Adrian for accommodating the event at the Nordic Shelter and for operating the timing, and all of the helpers who assisted with many tasks to ensure the event occurred.

Cooma Colts put in great efforts in two grand finals MAINSTREET Under 12’s Mainstreet Cooma Colts Under 12’s provided a spectacular showdown at GIO Stadium against the undefeated Queanbeyan Roos. The Grand Final produced some great plays, especially in defence. The young Colts were very brave in holding out the much bigger Roos. The Colts held the Roos out time and time again, but finally cracked, letting in two tries and allowing their opposition an 8-0 lead. The Colts were extremely unlucky not to break the Roos line but they held strong and went into half time 8-0. The second half was much like the first. The Colts were holding the bigger Roos at bay, controlling and scrambling in defence. Lachlan ”The Tuna” Brill was outstanding showing great toughness splitting the line and was everywhere in defence. Colby ”Tripple Treat” McDonald produced great touches out of dummy half and had some weaving runs. Adam ”The Bee” Constance has all year taken the bigger boys on, and was buzzing in and around defenders. James ”The Bull” Dyball was back charging at the opposition and hitting hard in defence. Jonah ”The Peacock” Perea backed the ball runners and made a fleeting run to look for space. Travis ”The Safe” Kelly, like he has done all year, was always looking to put his outside man into space with some sharp passing and jinking runs. Darcy Clark has played his best football over the last month and again put in some big runs and took on the ball runners. Jesse ”The Eel” Eljuga stepped and darted and was as slippery as ever always trying his best. Lachlan ”The Cucumber” McGufficke passed and ran strongly and never gave up

in defence. Jayden ”The Wall” Donald Smith kept turning up out wide with strong hit ups when needed and covered well in defence. Alex ”The Pitbull” Aitkenhead again had one of his tough games making some classic one on one tackles and using great footwork out of dummy half. Tynan McKenzie powered into the defensive line and stuck in defence always working relentlessly. Clinton Filtness showed great urgency with his straight running and took the runners front on with his tackles. Hudson ”The Spider” Laird looked for space in the line. He successfully got offloads away and was able to stop the oppositions attack. Lachlan ”Super Sub” Hemphill continued to show his fancy footwork and his never say die attitude kept him pushing to make more tackles. In the end a few late tries in the closing minutes gave a well deserved win to the Roos who showed great form all year. A huge congratulations to The Roos and a proud and gallant effort from the Colts who had a red hot go and stuck in there until the end. Final score 0-28. Well done boys!!

their heels in and play some good football. Starting off strongly with good defence and some great string runs Jak Adams barged over to score with Lachlan Inskip converting. West Belconnen hit straight back to score. Continuing with great skill Bill Zammit was able to find the try line and score. West Belconnen hit back scoring again. Great lead up work by Lachlan Jones which saw Remy Oldrey dive over and score leaving the score 16-14 at half time. Coming out with their second wind James Cahill ran through the opposition to score Lachlan Inskip converting. West Belconnen scored again but Joel Saville scored in the corner leaving the score 24-22 in Cooma’s favour. With the boys unable to hold on West Belconnen scored after the siren winning the game. A great effort from all the boys today, kept your head high, you all played well. Hope to see you all again next year.

Huge thank you goes to First Aider Marlene Bottom and League Safe Pete Mylan, Tammy Byrne Manager Anita Reid.

Brody Walters hits the target Young Brody Walters is back in the country after travelling to Spain and Italy to compete in the 33rd Universal Trench World Championships. Brody placed equal 10th with a score of 183/200 over the two days of competition held in Granada, Spain. Being the youngest member of the junior (under 21s) Australian team, Brody did extremely well, with his team placing fourth overall. Having to contend with windy conditions and the altitude differences affecting the ammunition patterns, Brody and his teammates took the challenges in their stride. 12 different nations come together to compete in the Championship, and Brody was given the opportunity to carry our flag in the opening ceremony. Although a public vote on Facebook had resulted in Victorian team member Nathan Cassells winning the flag-bearing role, he graciously declined. Having carried the flag before, and believing that a junior, being the future of the sport, should have the honour, Nathan gave the chance to Brody. 18-year-old Jackson Willmann of Queensland accompanied Brody by carrying the country identification sign during the ceremony. Brody is too young to hold his own gun licence, so his mother, Mikala, proudly accompanied him on the trip. “Attending the opening ceremony was very emotional,” she says, “Watching Brody walk

out with the flag, whilst the national anthem was playing brought a tear to my eye.” From Spain, Brody and Mikala travelled on to Todi in Italy where Brody competed in two more shoots at the Umbriaverde Sporting Resort, the Fazza’s Green Cup and the Italian Cup. Achieving a personal best with a score of 117/125 in the Fazza’s Green Cup, Brody showed impressive consistency and placed fourth in both competitions. Once the competition side of things were over, Brody

took advantage of the trip by travelling on to Desenzano on Lake Garda to have a guided tour of the Perazzi factory to see how a gun is made and the intricacies of the mechanisms and barrel development. They were also able to visit and have a shoot at the largest shooting grounds in Europe, the Lonato Shooting Complex, home to the International Shooting

Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Championships, which are being held this week. Brody and Mikala would like to thank all the business houses, local community, friends and family that helped support Brody for the trip. Now focussing on the National Development Camp and NSW State DTL Titles in Wagga, Brody is aiming for selection in the Elite

Jindabyne Central School (JCS) has defeated every other school in the nation to be crowned Australia’s overall snowsports primary school champion. JCS also had the honour of being the runnerup in the secondary schools division at the 2015 Interschools Snowsports Championships held at Mt Buller in Victoria. JCS finished way ahead of its nearest rival to be awarded the coveted title of 2015 Interschools Snowsports Co-ed Primary Champion at the national titles. Jindabyne entered this year’s Australian titles as the incumbent primary school champion and there was no disputing the winner of the prestigious award, with JCS finishing 23 points ahead of second-placed Geelong Grammar School. In the high school division, JCS was second to Snowy Mountains Grammar School. In total, JCS won 21 team medals – including six national championships – and 16 individual medals, with five of those students now the official Australian Interschools Champions. JCS kicked off the national interschool titles, held from September 9-13, when Year Five student Zana Evans won the division four (for students in Years Five and Six) cross country classic and led her team to the silver medal in the same event. JCS dominated snowboard events, with the brother and sister duo of Adam and Sarah Lambert winning their respective divisions in snowboard giant slalom, ensuring they are both Australian champions. Sarah joined Christina Taylor and Charli Hasler to bring home the team gold medals in division two (for students in Years Nine and 10) in snowboard cross and snowboard giant slalom while Zephyr Ashe, Kaleb Vagne and Fletcher Thew teamed up to win the division four snowboard giant slalom. The mogul competition ended in more success for JCS when Cooper Woods took out the division two competition and Jackson Harvey won the division three (for students in Years Seven and Eight) national titles. Cooper and Ethan Topalovic teamed up to win the moguls national title while Cooper’s younger brother Nate collected an individual medal in moguls when he came second in division five (for students in Kindergarten to Year Four) ahead of fellow JCS student Mac Livissianos in third place. Mac joined Joey Ellis and Tomas Brulisauer to win the division five skier cross national title while Sarah Lambert and Benjamin Wynn claimed individual silver medals in skier cross. JCS picked up three team medals in the most contested division of the championships – alpine giant slalom, while Year 11 student Charlotte Murphy collected a bronze medal in division one girls. “I was so surprised when they called out Jindabyne Central School as the overall champion,” said Year Five student Sophie Paske. “We were all so excited, it was a bit overwhelming.”
