Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has been given a good report from its indepednent auditor, Graham Bradley of Auswild and Co. Mr Bradley addressed the November 9 meeting of council.

Council has shown an operating surplus, before capital grants and contribution, of $1.26million.

This compares with a $648,000 deficit for the previous finacial year.

Council had an operating revenue of $21.26million, an increase of 14.3 percent over 2008.

Operating expenses totalled $20million, an increase of 3.9 percent over the previous year.

Council’s general manage John Vucic said Mr Bradley had praised council’s performance in key areas: • for its financial performance in turbulent times and despite the recessionary impacts on the region; • its quick response to the global financial crisis, which saw council move investments into government guaranteed, high interest and short term investments away from CPDOs which had caused council and other local government bodies financial losses the previous year.

• Councils’ fiscal management which has seen it able to stay within the State Government’s 3.2 percent rate-pegging allowance, without council having to borrow or liquidate assets; • Council’s books and accounts have been well kept and maintained within the required guidelines.

Mr Vucic said from his perspective, council had been able to keep a tight rein on its strategies and financial planning but had still managed to deliver a good outcome.

Council has been able to maintain its servies and meet ratepayers’ expectations while keeping

its accounts in good order.

Mr Bradley told council while it had maintained its reserves satisfactorily, it still should be prepared to increase these to meet future needs.

Mr Bradley also mentioned council’s rates arrears figure, which stands at $1.06m or approximately 9.84 percent of total receivables.

He suggested council aggressivey pursue this debt for recovery.

Mr Vucic said both these points were under active consideration by council and he was prepared to vigorously pursue the minority ratepayers who have rate debt with council.

He said council’s strategy would continue to see it committed to meeting its responsibilities to ratepayers while continuing a responsible fiscal program.

Water review provokes petition The five-year review into the Snowy Water licence was released last week.

While the report has given Snowy Hydro’s operations the thumbs-up, the Snowy River Alliance has launched a petition aimed at the salvation of the Snowy River.

The petition reads: “Save the Snowy River” “We want to save the Snowy River from inept management by the NSW government and the Snowy Scheme from lease or sale by government/s, which will also cause the death of the river “The Snowy River is dying! The NSW Government turned down the opportunity to save the Snowy River and save the taxpayer millions of dollars.

“If they amend the Snowy Water Licence (SWL) before 18 December 2009 to allow environmental flows from the Moonbah River, they can save the Snowy River and save taxpayers millions. Instead they will sign the death knell for the Snowy and force us to pay compensation to Snowy Hydro.

“We want the NSW Parliament to: 1. Amend the Snowy Water Licence now to allow environmental flows from the Moonbah River into the Snowy River.

2. Incorporate the legal advice of the NSW Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) into the Snowy legislation and Snowy Water Licence to make minimum environmental flows mandatory 3. Incorporate the scientific advice of the Snowy Scientific Committee (SSC) to return environmental flows to the Snowy River via the Moonbah River.

4. Ensure permanent spills over the Guthega Dam wall and Island Bend Dam wall into the Upper Snowy

River &, permanently decommission all aqueducts on the Snowy River tributaries.

The Review NSW Water Minister Phil Costa released the report of the first review of the Snowy water licence, which governs how Snowy Hydro Limited can take, store and use water from the Snowy River system.

Minister Costa said an important aspect of the report includes recommendations to modify Snowy Hydro’s water licence to improve the openness and transparency of water reporting.

“This review undertaken by the NSW Government found that Snowy Hydro has complied with its licence conditions, but the prolonged drought has impacted on the delivery of water users, including the environment,” Mr Costa said.

“The Snowy region has been in drought since the licence commenced in 2002. Despite this, 194 gigalitres of water has been recovered as environmental flows for the Snowy River since the introduction of this licence.

“These environment flows into the Snowy River include 124 gigalitres from NSW, which would not have been delivered without the licence agreement in place. In addition, another 62 gigalitres has been recovered by NSW for release to the environment in the Murray River.

“The Snowy water recovery project is on track to meet the 2012 target of recovering 212 gigalitres of water for the environment, so if the drought eases and more water becomes available we can increase environmental flows in the river.”

Information on Red Energy Electricity company Red Energy gave a presentation to council at the last council meeting, held November 9, providing information about how the business operates.

Red Energy has been around since 2004, and started with a handful of staff and no customers.

Since then, they have obtained approximately 250,000 customers, and employ over 300 staff members in their Victorian based offices.

Red Energy purchases their power exclusively from Snowy Hydro, giving them a local connection with this area. According to CEO Iain Graham, “Red Energy is a part of the future growth of

Snowy Hydro.

Red Energy are also enthusiastic about clean energy.

“We promise that every unit of energy you buy from us, whether commercial or residential, we request from Snowy that they generate another unit of energy from a renewable source,” head of marketing Marcus Kohn-Taylor said.

Red energy is about making an offer that is fair and competitive, and according to Mr Graham, that is what they are trying to do in NSW. Red Energy attempts to offer people the best deals on electricity available, and concedes that they will not always be able to offer the best prices, and will honestly advise customers if this is the case.

SEC suspends advisory services The Snowy Enterprise Centre (SEC - aka Snowy-Monaro Business Enterprise Centre) has announced the suspension of its mobile small business advisory services as at the end of December, but will continue to provide its incubator and office-based business support services, including training programs.

This situation has arisen due to the decision of the NSW State Government not to continue to fund regional programs in support of small business enterprise in which the SEC could participate, and the lack of a positive response by the Federal Government to repeated questions about the likelihood of further programs for similar support in the region beyond the end of this calendar year.

The SEC has provided a highly successful free mobile business advisory and support service since 1993 on the back of State Government initiatives for small business.

Funding from these initiatives ceased at the end of 2008, and a Federal Government program for supporting small businesses affected by the recent financial crisis, where the SEC successfully bid for a $75,000 tender, ceases at the end of this year.

Small business will now have to rely on the limited support that is available from Capital Region BEC (CRBEC), based in Queanbeyan.

Anyone in the region who feels disadvantaged by this necessary decision, or is otherwise concerned, is advised by the SEC to express their feelings directly to their State and Federal MPs Steve Whan and Mike Kelly, particularly if

the CRBEC service is found to be inadequate for their needs.

The SEC will, however, use its best endeavours to facilitate the support that CRBEC can provide, and to ensure that the Centre’s Business Incubator, housed in its premises at 38 Bombala Street Cooma, remains operational, primarily to assist new small business enterprises to find their feet in their first year or so of operation.

It will also maintain information services to small businesses, which can continue to obtain free publications, and advice on where to obtain further help, from the office. The Centre’s successful small business training programs will also continue to be offered periodically.

The SEC is a not-for-profit organisation, but has adopted a strategy of becoming as selfsufficient as possible by providing targeted feebased training services, and any over-arching services that are needed, to both businesses and the wider community.

It will be seriously hampered in this endeavour without a business adviser / trainer to develop the training content and mechanisms, however the Centre’s volunteer Board is determined to continue its efforts to provide a decent small business and community support service in the region in due course, with or without continued Government support.

Cooma’s police rescue service axed NSW Police has advised that after a lengthy review, the provision of rescue services within the Cooma Local Government Area by police officers will be withdrawn and their role reallocated to other emergency services.

This decision is the result of a four month review undertaken by Monaro Local Area Commander Superintendent Gary Merryweather who said it was based on a number of factors.

“With a shortage of trained police rescue operators at Cooma it has become increasingly difficult to provide appropriate rescue services for the community.

“We have also identified that there is an inability to ensure a robust succession plan to continue with these types of operations.

“However I wish to reassure the community that their safety has and will not be compromised by this decision and interim arrangements previously put in place will continue,” Superintendent

Merryweather said.

“NSW Fire Brigades based in Cooma are in a position to assume the secondary rescue role at short notice and the State Emergency Service also based in Cooma, will continue with their primary rescue role.

“These arrangements will take place immediately and I would like to thank all the members of the rescue organisations for their support and assistance with this matter.

“From a policing perspective it is sad to see that after more than 20 years of rescue operations which have seen numerous operations and lives saved has now come to an end.

“To all the current serving and past police rescue operators I would like to thank them for their diligent service in what is an extremely demanding role and wish them well for the future,” Superintendent Merryweather said.

The celebrations on Saturday and Sunday November 14 and 15, to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone 100 years ago of the All Saints Anglican Church in Berridale by the Venerable Archdeacon Bartlett, attracted past and present parishioners, history buffs and many of the most senior parishioners who travelled in order to attend the festivities.

On Saturday 120 guests were treated to a luncheon hosted by the parishioners in the Berridale Community Hall which was decorated gold and silver balloons and complemented with beautiful flowers.

The occasion presented the opportunity to catch up and reminisce. Norma Weston described the luncheon as being a wonderful reunion.

Guest Speaker Chris White spoke of her research undertaken in the production of the centenary book based on the “lives of the faithful souls, past and present who serviced their Lord in fellowship at All Saints Anglican Church Berridale 1909-2009”.

The book containing excerpts from the parish records, is an overview of history of the parishioners in the Berridale community.

John King, a member of the Parish Council since the early 1970’s, mentioned about his efforts locate the time capsule which was buried at the time of the laying of the foundation stone.

After digging one metre underneath the stone without success, John now believes it is located in the actual wall of the church.

John read a letter from Bob Wilson relating to the history of the parish which began its life as West Monaro, Gegzerick, Berridale and finally Berridale and the Snowy Mountains.

John Allen rounded off the speeches with an outline of involvement of the Allen family in All Saints when Edmund John Allen (1856-1937) became a founding warden.

Following the luncheon, car loads of people went to visit the region’s historic churches including Maffra, Gegedzerick, Boloco and the newer church of Jindabyne.

Saturday evening was for the young and young at heart, with a a dance in Berridale Community Hall. Though not as well attended as the lunch, the evening was great fun and the music provided by the Graham Scobie Band was excellent.

The Sunday morning began with Bishop Trevor Edwards arriving outside All Saints in a very smart sulky – the mode of transport 100 years ago.

While in keeping with her memories of wearing her prettiest clothes to church as a small girl, 98years young Lily Constance arrived wearing her prettiest hat.

Sunday morning’s Eucharist was the climax of the celebrations.

Two Eucharists were conducted simultaneously as there was insufficient room to accommodate everyone in All Saints Church where Bishop Edwards delivered the sermon in which he noted the congregation must contemplate the future by persevering and stirring regularly.

The other service was in the neighbouring CWA Hall where Bishop Allan Ewing gave the sermon.

The highlight of the morning tea which followed the service was the cutting of the cake decorated with a model of the church, by Lily Constance using the silver trowel which was used for the laying of the church’s foundation stone.

Master of Ceremonies, Reverend Carol Wagner summed up the whole weekend as a fitting and encouraging celebration of 100 years of witness and ministry in Berridale and the surrounding community and the hope that it will continue to serve the parish for the next hundred years and beyond.

Campaign to save the Snowy River Editor My grandfather along with so many Australians fought in two world wars so that his children and grandchildren could be free, so that they could live in a ‘nation’ that valued democracy, freedom of speech and human rights.

The country, principles and values that so many lived and died for, the ‘freedoms’ that were sacrosanct now mean little to some public servants and politicians obsessed with the ‘dollar bottom line’, where Australia is for sale and her natural resources perpetually on the market. On Remembrance Day, the Prime Minister will laud those who sacrificed so much in so many theatres of war so that we Australians remain ‘free’.

Yet, at the same time, successive politicians and ‘public servants’ plan and effect the sale of national assets; ports, roads, railways, institutions and natural resources. They will talk about ‘national border security’ yet will ‘excise’ territory, sell ports and corporatise national institutions.

The Snowy Scheme built under the Defence Act, is no longer secure - the keystone in national energy and water management - whilst a handful of people; the Snowy CEO and Public Relations staff continue to plan for a sale perhaps within the next ten years.

This despicable scheme supported by a handful of NSW public servants and Ministers who will not answer to the public or apparently to their counterpart shareholders, the Commonwealth and Victoria, remains possible because the many people paid to write legislation clearly did not get it right.

The Snowy vulnerable to hostile takeover by commercial interests and the Snowy River has no real environmental rights or protection.

The Australian people said a resounding NO to the attempt to sell the Snowy Scheme yet a mere handful of Snowy Executives, NSW public servants and Ministers - people who enjoy the fruits of a free nation - continue to plot to deny the Snowy River of real water, to privatise the Snowy Scheme and avoid scrutiny.

In so doing, they destroy the remaining vestiges of democracy and democratic principles, open and free speech, accountability and true representation that, amongst many principles and values, the Diggers fought for.

Equally, despite the scientific evidence and ongoing advocacy to return flushing flows to the Upper Snowy River, these same public servants are determined not to allow the Snowy River natural and variable flows, and ‘advise’ Ministers against the decommissioning of key aqueducts that will in the scheme of things return a miniscule, although vital amount of the water into the Snowy, water still pouring from the mountains as the snow melt continues.

My grandfather and his mates fought for Australia and my father and his mates fought for the conservation of Australia’s natural resources - primarily the mountain catchments now so pivotal in our endless thirst for real water.

The Snowy River also has a natural thirst denied by a handful of public servants and the Ministers they advise and denied by Snowy Hydro who will take every drop for dollar profits to launch yet another attempt

to sell the Snowy Scheme.

We are talking about just a tiny handful of people on the Australian payroll plotting to make money from the Snowy. To profiteer in such a manner during a war is a criminal, a punishable offence.

Indeed, cumulative breaches of the Snowy Water Licence is a criminal, punishable offence.

Prime Minister, Remembrance Day means to remember how people fought for the nation, how they sacrificed their lives.

Your Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Mike Kelly as he fought to win the key seat of Eden Monaro promised to return water to the Snowy River, promised ‘over my dead body’ never to sell the Snowy Scheme, promised to represent.

Make Remembrance Day real by properly observing political promises and commitments, by incorporating true democratic values into practical action, by ditching the excuses.

‘The drought’ is in political principles; integrity, honesty and accountability.

Honour your nation, honour your political party and their hard won seats representing us, the people, honour Australia and her natural resources. There is plenty of water running off the mountains and still little into the Upper Snowy River.

The Murray also needs some decency.

At least, sacrifice political expediency and selfish State pecuniary interests for the sake of our rivers. Make Remembrance Day real.

Open garden raised $4000 this money will go towards upgrading another of our courts with an all weather surface.

Berridale has a great facility and always welcomes tennis players of all ages and grades. Social Tennis is currently played on Monday mornings from 9am – 12 noon with all standards welcome.

The recent Hillside Open Garden Day on November 8, was a huge success as a fundraiser for the Berridale Tennis Club, thanks to the great generosity of Gail Stubbs in opening up her beautiful property to the public and the excellent weather on the day.

Despite having to compete with many other attractions that weekend, there were around 360 visitors who enjoyed the awesome gardens, stalls and food on offer.

The ladies of the Tennis Club were kept busy in the kitchen preparing Devonshire Teas, quiche and salad and picnic baskets of mixed sandwiches, slice and fruit.

Also popular was the barbecue run by the men from the Club and specialty coffees served

by Paula Smith from Snowy Mountains Coffee who kindly donated her services for the day. The Fashion Parade proved a big hit with the ladies and gents and it looks like we’re in for a very colourful summer this year. Thanks to Rockmans and South East Rural for supplying the wonderful selection of fashions which you can check out in their stores.

Looking for a photo Editor, Can you help me find a photographer in the district with a special photo I’m looking for - I’m sure somebody must have the “shot” I myself missed 50 years ago.

It was some time in the year 1958 I came driving into Old Adaminaby, and followed the road all the way down to where it disappeared in the rising water of Lake Eucumbene.

Right in front of me and a little to the left was a dark brown “ghost house” with water half way up, only an upper window in front to be seen.

Unfortunately I didn’t have a camera at that time, but somebody must have been there and got that “shot”.

As far as I remember it was more buildings disappearing in the water, but this one in front was the most remarkable and in a way frightening, I remember.

I have investigated archives and other sources to find the photo I’m

looking for, but not succeeded so far.

I have even got the answer from one person that this could never have happened, since houses left like this would be a hazard to boats.

That’s nonsense, since I know very well what I saw. And hazard? - the thousands of eucalyptus trees left in the rising water could do more harm, I guess.

Is there a photographer out there who can help me? Somebody with an album with old photos?

If so, I’ll give you a reward in cash and also the first issue of my coming book about the Norwegians in the Snowy Mountains Scheme, title “The Wonder of the Snowy Mountains”. The photo will eventually be printed there.

Walks For Awareness founder Toni Nossiter came through Cooma last Wednesday, as part of her Melbourne to Newcastle, 1500km walk to raise money and awareness against whaling in the Antarctic and Australian Waters. Money raised from the walk will go towards Sea Shepherd and ORRCA.

New bush fire danger signs unveiled The first of hundreds of new roadside Bush Fire Danger signs to be erected around NSW in coming weeks was unveiled on Sunday in one of Sydney’s many fire-prone districts.

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan and Member for Menai Alison Megarrity today inspected the first of the 470 new signs, installed on Menai Road, Bangor, in the Sutherland Shire.

Mr Whan said the alert signs incorporated the new national Fire Danger Ratings of Severe, Extreme and Catastrophic, introduced nationally this summer.

“These new signs, produced at a cost of around $180,000, will be rolled out across NSW over the coming weeks to replace the existing warning signs in high-visibility locations beside major roads,” he said.

“They clearly and simply alert people living in or travelling through bush fire-prone areas to the level of danger if a fire were to break out in the prevailing conditions on that day.

“If people know the level of danger they are potentially facing, they can take appropriate action to Prepare. Act. Survive – including deciding whether they will stay to defend their property or leave early.”

Ms Megarrity said people in fire-prone areas needed to be well prepared for the bush fire season, including familiarising themselves with the new Severe, Extreme and Catastrophic Fire Danger Ratings.

“Like many regions of the State, Sutherland Shire has spectacular areas of thick bushland. People in districts like this need to be constantly alert to the threat of bush fire and to be as prepared as possible this summer,” she said.

Support for new mums Increasing the awareness of antenatal and postnatal depression is vital to help reduce stigma and make it easier for women to get help, according to Greater Southern Area Health Service (GSAHS).

Postnatal Depression Awareness Week is being recognised across Australia from November 18 to 24.

Mr Whan said the new Ratings, introduced in recognition that conditions like those seen in the Victorian bush fires presented a greater level of danger to the community, would help people make informed decisions in a bush fire.

“On days of Severe fire danger, a home will only offer safety if it is properly prepared and actively defended,” he said.

“If a fire starts on a day of Extreme fire danger, only homes specially designed and constructed to withstand bush fires and that are actively defended can offer shelter.

“Catastrophic is as bad as it sounds. On days of Catastrophic fire danger, even specially designed and constructed homes that are actively defended may not provide shelter and there is the potential for lives to be lost.

“On a day of forecast Catastrophic fire danger the best course of action is to leave the night before or early on the morning of that day.”

Mr Whan also reinforced the need for people to monitor the RFS website for information on bush fire danger and major fires burning around NSW. “The website also gives residents information on how to protect their properties and enables them to download a Bush Fire Survival Plan to help them make critical decisions about what they will do in the event of a fire.

“The website also has a Bush Fire Household Assessment Tool residents can use to help them assess the danger to their property from bush fire.”

“If symptoms of depression are not treated it can lead to problems including difficulties bonding with children, difficulties in the marriage, financial stress, employment difficulties, drug and alcohol abuse, anger management issues and suicide,” Ms Cook said.

According to Beyond Blue, around 10 per cent of women will experience depression during pregnancy, referred to as antenatal depression.

Postnatal depression occurs in the months after a baby is born and affects up to 16 per cent of women in Australia.

Dads are also being diagnosed with antenatal and postnatal depression.

“There is lots of information for families on the Beyond Blue website www.beyondblue.org.au that can help women and their families learn about postnatal depression and what they can do to help themselves,” Ms Cook said.

For mild to moderate depression, exercise and finding some support groups like mother’s groups has been shown to be effective, as well as some of the talking therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy or interpersonal psychotherapy.

“For moderate to severe depression, medication may also be recommended, and it is a combination of medication and a talking therapy that has been shown to be the most effective. Contacting a sympathetic GP is always your first point of call,” Ms Cook said.

GSAHS has implemented a universal screening program for all women as they begin antenatal care which is reviewed after they have given birth. Every family is offered a home visit within the first two weeks of having a baby.

“The aim of this program is to identify women who are at risk of developing postnatal depression and provide extra supports early,” she said.

125 years of education in Jindabyne This Saturday Jindabyne will celebrate 125 years of eduction.

A not for profit sub -committee to the P & C has been working for months to create a wonderful walk down memory lane for the many people in the community who ever attended the district’s schools including Moonbah, Ingebyra, Island Bend and other provisional schools.

At 11am in the Jindabyne Central School the time capsule that was buried 25 years ago for the 100-year Centenary Celebration will be unearthed and its contents rediscovered. It will be reburied with additional updated information added to it for the next generations to later discover.

Stories and photos of school days from several generations of students, teachers and families are trickling in (and still requested) for addition to the updated Centenary Book (a further 25 years will be added and reprinted) which will be launched on the day. just for a taste of what’s to come.

In the evening at the Station Resort, old school friends will reunite over dinner and entertainment along with further photos and displays to reflect on. A documentary DVD will be launched containing some hilarious stories from previous students young and old which has been filmed locally over the past weeks and will be available for sale.

The book and DVD will be cherished souvenirs for this community to treasure and to pass on to future school kids to be able to get a glimpse of what a profound and unique past this community has had. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this very special occasion.

Minister Costa said NSW will consult with shareholders and the community on the proposed modifications to the licence outlined in the report. “The Snowy community are passionate about restoring the health of this iconic river and 19 public submissions were received as part of the review process,� Mr Costa said. “The report recommends Snowy Hydro Ltd be required to produce an annual compliance report to show how it has met its obligations to release environmental flows to the Snowy and Montane rivers and required annual releases to the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers. “This data will be made publicly available each year. “The report also recommends a variation to flow releases from Tantangara Dam to help secure Cooma’s town water supply.�

The NSW Government is required to review the Snowy water licence after the first five years of operation. The licence was issued in 2002 and the first review is being undertaken by the NSW Office of Water (NOW) on behalf of the Water Administration Ministerial Corporation. “The scope of the review was limited to the provisions of the licence relating to the initial release of water to the Snowy River for environmental reasons,� Mr Costa said. “Having said that, the NSW Government will look further at options to better achieve environmental objectives in the Snowy. “This will include detailed environmental, social and economic studies in relation to the future of the Mowamba Aqueduct. “The Snowy Scientific Committee will be supported by the NSW Government to complete additional research in relation to Mowamba which was identified in their first report released earlier this year. “The Mowamba aqueduct plays an important role in the Snowy scheme by diverting water to Jindabyne Dam and has been in place for over 40 years. “We must understand the environmental and

socio-economic impacts of decommissioning before the NSW, Victorian and Australian governments make a decision. “We need to have all the necessary research complete so that all parties can sit around the table and make an informed decision.�

Minister Costa said the NSW Government is committed to working with the Victorian and Australian governments to restore the health of the mighty Snowy River. “We’ll continue to meet our agreed water recovery targets and ensure that environmental water releases from NSW storages are in compliance with the interstate agreement,� Mr Costa said. “Importantly, we’ll continue to consult the Snowy Scientific Committee on the adequacy of the environmental flow regime and monitoring programs to ensure that we get the most benefit from Snowy environmental flow releases.�

COOMA SHOWGROUND HIVE OF ACTIVITY! Cooma Showground and the Multifunction Centre have seen more activity over the last month than has been seen for a long time. Festivities began with the Snowy Reunion, National Engineering Heritage Landmark Award for Rock Bolting and Country Energy Reunion. The next weekend the showground hosted the Rotary District Convention. The following weekend saw the showground providing a venue for the Motorfest and Snowy Ride check point. On 27 and 28 November the Showground will be host to the annual dog show.

The History of Christmas The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years.

Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born.

The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals (parades) with floats, carolers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

Many of these traditions began with the Mesopotamian celebration of New Years. The Mesopotamians believed in many gods, and as their chief god Marduk. Each year as winter arrived it was believed that Marduk would do battle with the monsters of chaos. To assist Marduk in his struggle the Mesopotamians held a festival for the New Year. This was Zagmuk, the New Year’s festival that lasted for 12 days.

The Mesopotamian king would return to the temple of Marduk and swear his faithfulness to the god. The traditions called for the king to die at the end of the year and to return with Marduk to battle at his side.

To spare their king, the Mesopotamians used the idea of a “mock” king. A criminal was chosen and dressed in royal clothes. He was given all the respect and privileges of a real king. At the end of the celebration the “mock” king was stripped of the royal clothes and slain, sparing the life of the real king.

The Persians and the Babylonians celebrated a similar festival called the Sacaea. Part of that celebration included the exchanging of places, the slaves would become the masters and the masters were to obey.

Early Europeans believed in evil spirits, witches, ghosts and trolls. As the Winter Solstice approached, with its long cold nights and short days, many people feared the sun would not return. Special rituals and celebrations were held to welcome

back the sun.

In Scandinavia during the winter months the sun would disappear for many days. After thirty-five days scouts would be sent to the mountain tops to look for the return of the sun. When the first light was seen the scouts would return with the good news.

A great festival would be held, called the Yuletide, and a special feast would be served around a fire burning with the Yule log.

Great bonfires would also be lit to celebrate the return of the sun.

In some areas people would tie apples to branches of trees to remind themselves that spring and summer would return.

The ancient Greeks held a festival similar to that of the Zagmuk/Sacaea festivals to assist their god Kronos who would battle the god Zeus and his Titans.

The Roman’s celebrated their god Saturn. Their festival was called Saturnalia which began in the middle of December and ended on January 1. With cries of “Jo Saturnalia!” the celebration would include masquerades in the streets, big festive meals, visiting friends, and the exchange of good-luck gifts called Strenae (lucky fruits).

The Romans decked their halls with garlands of laurel and green trees lit with candles. Again the masters and slaves would exchange places “Jo Saturnalia!” was a fun and festive time for the Romans, but the Christians thought it an abomination to honor the pagan god. The early Christians wanted to keep the birthday of their Christ child a solemn and religious holiday, not one of cheer and merriment as was the pagan Saturnalia.

But as Christianity spread they were alarmed by the continuing celebration of pagan customs and Saturnalia among their converts.

At first the Church forbid this kind of celebration. But it was to no avail. Eventually it was decided that the celebration

would be tamed and made into a Christ Child celebrated as a December 25 as the observance celebration fit for the Christian Son solemn feast. In 350 AD another of Christmas. of God. Bishop of Rome, Julius I, chose Some legends claim that the Christian “Christmas” celebration was invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December.

The 25th was not only sacred to the Romans but also the Persians whose religion Mithraism was one of Christianity’s main rivals at that time. The Church eventually was successful in taking the merriment, lights, and gifts from the Saturanilia festival and bringing them to the celebration of Christmas.

The exact day of the Christ child’s birth has never been pinpointed. Traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD. In 137 AD the Bishop of Rome ordered the birthday of the

It’s been a particularly tough year for many, with more disadvantaged people than ever before in need of support during the Christmas period.

With reverberations of the Global Financial crisis, leading community service provider UnitingCare is seeing an increasing number of people requiring both emergency relief and assistance more frequently.

In a committed effort, Uniting Care and Target are joining together for the 18th UnitingCare Christmas Appeal to collect and distribute 150,000 gifts for people struggling financially.

“Together, this really can be done.

We’re asking Target shoppers to dig deep, find some extra Christmas spirit and spend a little on others when they’re buying for their loved ones, local coordinator Ruth Bigg-Wither from Cooma Uniting Church said.

“This year, everyone has felt the pinch to some extent, but it’s easy to forget those most disadvantaged suffer more.

There are children, teenagers, families and older people who often can’t afford

to celebrate Christmas with gifts.

“For these people, dealing with the enormous emotional pressure of their financial hardship can push them to breaking point. Let’s make a difference and show the caring spirit of local generosity”.

So how can you help?

All you have to do is spot the UnitingCare Christmas tree at the front of your Target store, take a gift tag off the tree to either buy or make a gift, or purchase a gift voucher from the checkout. UnitingCare volunteers will collect all the gifts and ensure they are distributed to those in need in time for Christmas morning.

“Shoppers can be assured that each gift goes to people in our community, so it’s a great way for everyone to contribute to local needs”, Ms Bigg-Wither said.

Gifts and gift vouchers can be donated at Target Cooma from November 16 to December 23.

Christmas cooking ideas Cheese Log Ingredients: 125g Philly cheese, 125g grated Coon matured cheese, 125g Kraft Cheddar cheese, 1 sml grated onion, 1 piece finely chopped capsicum, 1 tab finely chopped gherkin 1 tab. Worcestershire sauce Also: 1 tabsp paprika and 1 tabsp curry powder mixed together Method: Beat the Philly cheese. Add other ingredients. Form the mixture into 2 sausage shapes. Refrigerate for a while to firm up the mixture. Roll the sausages in the paprika and curry powder. Place them in alfoil in the fridge till required.

Cherry Pom Poms Ingredients: 50g red cherries 1/3 cups condensed milk, 2 cups coconut, 2t cherry marnier or cherry essence, 220g dark chocolate Method: Process the first 4 ingredients till combined in food processor. Melt chocolate and dip each pompom so only half is coated. Refrigerate.

Christmas Wreath Ingredients: 1 large packet of Chocolate Ripple Biscuits, 500 ml thickened cream (approx 2 cups), 1/2 cup castor sugar (optional), vanilla essence

Decoration - maraschino cherries, mint leaves, christmas lollies (candies) Method: Whip the cream with the vanilla essence (and sugar if preferred) until thick and standing in peaks. Place cream on a biscuit and add another. Continue working biscuits into a circle. Once the circle is complete, cover with remainder of cream and refrigerate.

To decorate place 3 or 4 mint leaves with 2 or 3 cherries at various places around the wreath to look like holly. Fill the centre of the wreath with christmas lollies.

Whip extra cream and fold into vanilla ice-cream. Add this mixture on top of the chocolate ice-cream. Refreeze until needed.

Then unmould Frozen Fruit Pudding.Use a warm towel around the mould or dip the base of mould into warm water.

Invert onto a plate.

Decorate with whipped cream and cherries.

Frozen Fruit Christmas Pudding Ingredients: 1 cup raisins,1/2 cup sultanas, 1/2 cup currants,100 grams glace cherries,1/4 cup chopped dried apricots, juice & finely grated rind of 1 orange, 1/2 cup cream, 2 litres chocolate icecream, softened, 1/2 cup extra cream, 1 litre vanilla icecream, softened. Extra cream and cherries for decoration. Brandy or favourite liquer (optional) Method: Combine fruit and juice in bowl. (optional) add brandy or your favourite liqueur. Fold cream and fruit into choc ice-cream.

Pour into a 12 cup ice-cream mould

Sucker lambs sell to $101

Mixed quality at Cooma cattle sale

Cooma Associated Agents yarded and sold 800 crossbred lambs and 2500 mutton and restocker sheep at Cooma on November 9.

This was the first real sign of those year’s sucker lambs, with some very well presented pens.

Sucker lambs sold to a top of $101 with most sales from $90 -$95 for the medium weights.

Light restocking sucker-lambs were also penned with restocker demand seeing most sales between $64-$71 to return to the paddock.

Old crossbred lambs well supplied int oa dearer market with bst sales put to $88 for woolly lastseason’s lambs. Most sale s$77-85.

Merino wether lambs were also dearer with on pen of unshorn lambs reaching $88. Most sales $47-$60.

Mutton proces were dearer acropss all grades with heavy shorn M/ws selling to $80 and most sales for heavy Merino r crossbred mutton $70 - $77.

Heavy first-cross ewes made to $90.50 to restockers from Gundagai.

Heavy mutton was dearer, ranging from $50-$58 for either shorn M/ wethers or M/ewes with half wool.

Next sale – November 23.

Cooma Associated Agents yarded 110 scale and 120 store cattle in a mixed quality yarding last Thursday.

Some cattle were still showing the tough winter condition but generally condition was fair to good.

Heavy cows held their value well, with best sales to 122cents/kg and most sale 112cents – 120 cents. Medium cows were also firm with results ranging from 108-112 cents/kg.

Steers to the trade were very limited in supply although heavier steers over 450kg sold from 136.6c/kg.

Lighter trade steers under 300kg rallied well and saw most sales around 160-168c/kg for some well presented Euro X steers.

Restockers supported well and pushed young Angus cross steers to 172.gc/kg to return to the paddock.

Light trade heifers 130-145c/kg with no heavy heifers to quote. The store market was firm to dearer, due to local restockers and some interest from the Bega Valley saw steer weaners sell to $400 with very limited supply.

Well breed Angus heifers 10-12months reached $430 with most sales $380-$410.

Small 200kg heifer claves dominated the store market and prices lifted considerably with better lines to $382 and most sales $30 to $350.

The next cattle sale will be on December 12.

A new backline treatment for lousy sheep

With sheep lice being more widespread than they have been for a number of years, a new product is good news for sheep producers.

The chemical it contains is called shn. Merryville bld, $43.50; P hart, imidacloprid, which has been used previously as a crop pesticide and now has been adapted for Jm, 6, 1st cross ewes, 1 yr, $100; use on animals.

The big challenge when treating a mob of sheep $59.60. is to treat them all thoroughly. You must deliver the right dose to all the animals in the mob.

With sheep worms, it’s relatively simple, dose to the heaviest in the mob and check that your drench gun is delivering the full dose with a measuring cylinder.

It’s harder with lice. The dose rate is important and we use bodyweight of sheep as an estimate of the surface area of the sheep.

Grown sheep need a double stripe of Avenge to aid spread. It can be applied to wet sheep and can handle rain after application.

The Insect Growth Regulators (Magnum, Zapp), when they were first released, had the great advantage of sustained action, preventing reinfestation with lice for some months.

Unfortunately, resistance to these chemicals is quite widespread, so they are not as reliable as they used to be. Avenge offers one months protection from reinfestation and if you want to get rid of lice, it’s important that you use that month to your advantage.

Make sure that you find and treat any stragglers or strays within that month and wean any lambs.

If you get them out, then you just might clean up the lice with one treatment.

Stray sheep, stragglers and odds and ends need to be kept away from treated sheep.The killer mob is a good place for them. If you get lice in your killers, it shouldn’t be too big a problem.

You can always get sheep back out of the killer mob and return them to their mob after the next shearing and lice treatment.

All backlines take time to kill lice – time to spread around the sheep and contact the lice.

After six weeks, sheep treated with Avenge should have no live lice. Make the point of checking so that you know whether or not the chemical worked. Check sheep any time you have them in the yards because the sooner you realise lice are present, the sooner you can limit the damage.

LHPA staff across the State are keen to get more involved with lice control. We need to know what treatments are working and what are failing and can then talk to the chemical companies about what might be happening.

Certainly we have seen more lice through the Cooma saleyards this year, though not many from Bombala have been amongst them.

Sometimes it’s just not wise to ask a man to give his opinion on something. It’s not that his opinion doesn’t count, it’s just that he may not say what you’d expect to hear and then you’re left wondering why you asked him in the first place.

This became glaringly obvious for a writer friend of mine who needed to condense her second novel into a screen script version (no dialogue) and keep it to about 20 pages because an Australian film company is interested in turning it into a film. So she got stuck into it and managed to get it into 14 pages and was very happy with the result but, in the interests of getting some feedback, she handed it around to a small number of people and asked them give an honest opinion to which she could then refer and edit her effort as necessary. Fair enough too as it’s her first attempt at condensing a 250 page novel into just a few pages while still retaining the gist of the story. She did a great job of it though.

But anyway, she decided to do the wifely thing and get her hubby in on it and even took the time to actually read the screenwrite version to him and then she asked him to

comment on it. For starters she wanted to know if he liked what he’d heard. “Well, no. Not really...” he ventured after a pause.

This was definitely an unexpected response but, well, she had asked for his honest opinion and he’d given it but she was a little taken aback so she decided to probe a little deeper. In hindsight, perhaps she should have just left it there but hey, how many of us really know when to leave that next question unasked. “Okay then” she went on “what is it that you don’t like?” Turned out it was the story itself. “What’s wrong with the story?” she asked in surprise.

“Well, there’s no fishin’ and not enough shootin’!”

Right! Well there it was in a nutshell. Of all the comments he could have made, this particular comment was the very last one my writer friend expected to hear.

“Fishing and shooting? You’re kidding me, right?!” Nope, he wasn’t kidding at all.

So there you go. Sometimes men don’t say what they mean but then there are those other occasions when they just come out with it and your jaw hits the floor. You know, things like “no fishin’ and not enough shootin’!”

Schools’ day at SR Festival

Gilbert goes to school

More than 500 school children attended the Snowy River Festival last Friday. Pictured, horse trainer Heath Harris and ‘Spike’ entertained the children (and teachers).

Bombala High RFS cadets graduate Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan recently congratulated 16 Bombala High School students on their success in completing the NSW Rural Fire Service’s (RFS) innovative Cadet Program.

The graduates of the 10-week program learn a wide range of life, leadership and firefighting skills such as hose drills, pumping water and emergency call out procedures.

“The commitment of these cadet graduates to their communities is to be commended and they have truly shown themselves to be leaders of tomorrow,” Mr Whan said.

“The RFS Cadet Program is aimed at Year 9 and 10 students, who learn basic firefighting skills, fire safety and fire behaviour, accident prevention in the workplace and the role of our emergency services.

“Through the program they gain a valuable insight to the RFS ideals of community service, dedication and team work, along with the rewards of volunteering.

“Knowledge of the dangers of bush fires and

the damage they can cause is essential when you live in a rural area. These students are to be commended for their efforts in learning how to live safely with the bush.”

Mr Whan said the students had demonstrated their community spirit, initiative and leadership throughout the cadet program and was treated to a demonstration of their new skills.

“The leadership and team work skills that these students have gained will stay with them for the rest of their lives and stand them in good stead for their future endeavours,” Mr Whan said.

“The demonstration by the cadets truly shows their excellent skills, and I strongly encourage any student who is interested in undertaking this program to join up. The skills and experiences they will gain are invaluable.

“Members of the RFS are exemplary community citizens and I encourage all 16 of these graduates to now build on their new skills and experiences by joining their local RFS brigade,” Mr Whan said.

Herb and Lynsey Nichols from Cooma have recently written and illustrated a children’s book, ‘Gilbert the Garbage Truck Needs Your Help, which is aimed at teaching children the virtues of recycling.

The book was read to children at Lambie Street Preschool, Cooma Public School, Cooma North Preschool and St Patrick’s Parish School, pictured above.

Wildflower display in KNP The NSW National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS) is anticipating a spectacular wildflower display in Kosciuszko National Park this summer after receiving good spring rains.

NPWS spokesperson, Mary Green said today that the wildflower display in the park has just begun but will improve considerably in the coming weeks.

“We are already seeing a good burst of colour from buttercups and some heath flowers in the alpine country above the treeline.

“Considering the spring we’ve had so far we think there’s a really good chance this will only get better.

“Sometimes flowering is limited by lack of good spring rains but this has been an exceptionally good.spring. It’s hard to pick the absolute peak because as things stand now it could be

anywhere between the first week in December and the end of January but my instincts tell me that New Year could be the point where we will witness the most spectacular display.

“When this happens we can expect more than 200 different species blooming at once creating a stunning field of wildlfowers across large areas of the park. By far the best location to witness the annual wildflower display will be the Main Range Walking Track.

“However there will be great opportunities from the top of the chair lift at Thredbo, and the walk up towards Kosciuszko summit from Charlotte pass. The Porcupine walk and areas around Perisher and Guthega as well as parts of Mount Selwyn will all offer some wonderful opportunities to see what we think will be a great display this season.

Our heritage to be preserved Over the past two years a small but dedicated group of locals have been working hard in an effort to develop a nationally significant Heritage Centre for the Snowy Mountains Region in Jindabyne.

The Snowy Mountains Heritage Centre Committee is headed up by prominent Jindabyne local Tom Barry (Chairman). David Shelley is the committee secretary / public officer and treasurer is Brian Farmer.

Mr Tom Barry said, “while we have been working for some years on this concept, it would not be possible to be where we are today without the support from the rest of the committee that include Gordon Jenkinson, Leisa Caldwell, Richard Nutt, Greta Jones and Jack Kahler and the support of many others”.

While the group is now completing the formal requirements such as registering and incorporating as the Snowy Alpine Heritage Association, there have already been two significant milestones achieved including the bringing on board of GHD Partners in Canberra to develop the business plan and the securing of land for the project from Snowy Hydro.

Mr Shelley said, “that without Snowy Hydro’s strong support and commitment to date we may still be searching for the means to commencement of this important project on behalf of the local and Australian community. Late last year an agreement was reached in principle for land with Snowy Hydro and in February of this year formal agreement was reached for several hectares of land for the project.” Mr Shelley added ‘this project now has a real chance of success and the committee can now focus on securing the required funding to turn this idea into reality. We thank Snowy Hydro for their generous support and assistance”.

The planned Heritage Centre aims to become a nationally significant facility that showcases both the Natural and Human History of the region including several key themes that will showcase Aboriginal, Early Pioneer, Pastoral and Multi-cultural History relevant to our area and the nation.

Mr Tom Barry said, “This Heritage Centre will also showcase such great feats as the Snowy Mountains Scheme, the history of Skiing, the stories of the high country cattlemen and Man from Snowy River Heritage.” Mr Barry added “our local stories and history are unique to our area but of importance and revered by the entire country. Much of our local history in fact helped build the Australian identity we know today. We have a responsibility to instil an appreciation of what that proud Australian character is in both our young people and those who choose to come to Australia from overseas.”

The committee will now focus on the development of a business plan and funding plan for the facility to ensure its long term financial interests and will be calling on support and assistance from the rest of the community and other local stakeholders including Snowy River Shire Council to get involved in the project.

On a recent visit to Jindabyne, Snowy Hydro CEO Terry Charlton took the opportunity to discuss the project with Tom Barry and David Shelley with Mr. Charlton saying “Snowy Hydro is pleased to be able to support this community project and I am confident that this facility will become a major attraction for the region. We are pleased to be able to provide significant support through a donation of land for the project, I congratulate Tom and the committee on their work so far.

Revive and Thrive Challenge

Pretty Plain hut rebuilding progress After months of preparation the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has moved on to the next stage in the rebuilding of the historic Pretty Plains Hut, transporting to the site by helicopter prefabricated sections that have been crafted in Khancoban over the past four months.

The Pretty Plains Hut was among 19 huts which were destroyed in the Kosciuszko bushfires of 2003 and is now being rebuilt as part of a broader plan that will see the eventual rebuilding of seven historic huts and reconstruction of a number of others within the park.

Pretty Plain Hut however, was one of the most popular huts in the park and its demise in the fires was the cause of considerable distress among many of the hut enthusiasts.

NPWS Ranger and manager of the hut reconstruction program, Megan Bowden, said today the next stage in the rebuilding of Pretty Plain Hut will begin once all the parts have arrived on site.

“By the end of the week we will have flown 19 tonnes of eucalypt hardwood logs into the site next to where the original hut existed.

“Each pole has been crafted and prepared at the Khancoban depot by skilled NPWS staff, contractors and a number of volunteers to minimise the amount of work required in the field away from the advantages offered in a depot with

electric tools and forklifts.

“This allowed us to construct a hut and then dismantle it before flying it out.

“By the end of the week we will have flown 85 loads each weighing an average of 500 kilograms.

“The straight poles we have used have been sourced from a variety of places. They have come from State Forests and from some of the felling operations carried out for safety reasons along the Cabramurra and Elliott Way. “The rebuilding project is on track and now we will begin working on site with volunteers from the Kosciuszko Huts Association where we will continue until the job is completed around February.

“Meantime preparations for the reconstruction of Doctor Forbes Hut are now well underway with timbers for the roof being prepared. We also expect to complete reconstruction work being conducted on the Opera House hut in March next year,” Ms Bowden said.

Croker’s team in fours final

Contestents in this year’s dragon boat races at Jindabyne.

Join Jindabyne paddlers Dragon boat racing has been run in over the past couple of years, and has proved to be a favourite with the local people.

The 2009/10 season started up over the weekend, and organisers were pleased with the number of people who turned up for a paddle.

“It was a good day, a good roll up. We had a full boat on the water for the day.

The first day was a great success… we had some new members coming into the club and we’re hoping for more,” dragon boat organiser Alan (Barney) Davis said.

Dragon boat teams are made up of 22 people, and the club offers options for competitive and social paddlers.

“People can go to comps, or go for a social paddle as a fitness and fun thing,” barney said.

Last year, the club had a full crew and paddled competitively at Merimbula, Canberra, Falls Creek and the Flowing Festival.

They are looking to grow on their success over the past few years, and are hoping to introduce a women’s team, a junior team and possibly a men’s masters team.

The dragon boat club meets twice a week, at 9am on Sunday and 5pm on Tuesday, behind the tennis courts at the Bowling Club.

A brilliant display of bowling from Terry Croker has put his team of Robbie Roberson, Andrew Caldwell and Bob Lowe into the final of the Cooma Bowling Club’s fours championship. Croker was in great form as his team proved too good on the day for Simon Schoon, Stumpy Wallis, Ray Downey and John Schoon.

Croker’s team had a good start, and with a fair share of the rub of the green, they opened up a 9 – 0 lead after just five ends. Schoon’s team slowly regrouped and when they picked up four shots on the 10th end they looked a chance at 12 – 7.

It was at this stage that Croker stamped his authority on the match.

End after end Schoon’s team placed themselves in the position to win the end only to see Croker play an exceptional bowl to snatch the advantage. He played a great combination of deft draw shots and well judged ‘on shots’ to dominate the play.

In the end Croker’s team had a very convincing 24 – 11 win. They will now play the final next Sunday afternoon against the winner of the other semi final between Mel Storta and Dave Pastro that will be played on Sunday morning.

On Saturday four very exciting games were played in the ‘fab five’ competition with two ending in draws, one won by two shots and the last by three shots. In a

remarkable finish Renate Winckel and Jack Sajina picked up six shots on the last end to grab a 25 all draw with Keith Goodwin and Wayne Lodge.

After leading establishing a 17 – 8 lead, Simon Schoon, Ken Boate and Tony Gray needed a shot on the last end to record a 19 all draw with Col Cottam, Cobber Seears and Richard Nichols. Nichols’ side had fought back to pick up 11 shots to one to go into the last end in the lead for the first time in the match only to see Gray snatch the draw.

In another great finish Jock Davidson, Helen Peuker and Bob Lowe scored six shots on the last two ends to finish in front off Cathy Gray, Allan Crowe and Paul Cannell 25 – 22. Andrew Caldwell and Colin Roberson held off a strong comeback from John Evans and Dave Pastro to win their clash 24 – 22.

There were two games played on Sunday but the results were no where near as close. Jock Davidson, Jack Sajina and Keith Goodwin had a 17 -12 win over Sandro Wialletton, Cobber Seears and Denis Steinfort in a low scoring game.

Col Cottam, John Grech and Peter Caldwell were too consistent for Mario Frezza, Renate Winckel and Don Jarvis. Despite dropping six shots on one end Caldwell was able to record a 27 – 16 win.

Seniors learn to keep active Last Thursday, November 12, the fourth annual combined exercise class for exercises for the over 60’s was held at the Adaminaby School of Arts.

The group was led by Elizabeth Mackinnon, who conducts five exercise groups a week throughout the local area, and was well attended with about 60 people taking part.

She was assisted by special guest Dorothy Dobson, who is visiting from the UK, and has been leading the way in physical activity for the young and the elderly for over 40 years.

Dorothy trained Elizabeth in her methods, and gave an address to the exercise class before Elizabeth put them to work.

The group started off with some gentle dance style exercises to loosen up, with both Elizabeth and Donna taking turns to lead.

Once the morning session was done, the group gathered for a lunch and people were invited to bring along any craft projects for others to see

and appreciate.

Once the exercises had finished, Dorothy addressed the group and told them about her work. She also brought messages from the Professor of Gerontology at Dundee University, who uses the classes for her research into ageing and exercise.

The group’s Patroness, The Dowager Duchess of Strathmore also passed on a message, and Elizabeth believes “It is nice to know that we are a part of such an organisation even if we are very distant.”

Elizabeth will continue to run gentle exercise classes in the local area.

The Stableford nine hole winners for the righties were Harry, Hans, Michelle White and Michelle Burton.

For the lefties it was Roger, Mick, Ross and Ray. Wednesday for the men’s Stableford was John Bagnall with 38 points. Ball winners were Ron Duncan 37, Ben Clancy 36 on a countback from Brian O’Halloran and Chris Bevan both on 36.

Nearest the pin on the 12th was Walter Amman, and on the 8th Ron Duncan. Wednesday for the ladies,

winner was Mary Obermaier 34.

Runners up were Donna Tuckwell 30, Carolyn O’Byrne 29 and Jan O’Halloran 29. Nearest the pin was Donna.

Adaminaby Races on Saturday This year’s Adaminaby races will be a celebration of the great Phar Lap. When Phar Lap the movie was made, all the scenes for his race in Mexico were actually filmed at the Adaminaby Racetrack.

Unlike last year when you would have thought we were filming in the Antarctic this year (fingers crossed) the weather is shaping up to be a real HOT Mexican Fiesta.

The Mexican Embassy have jumped on board with us this year and have made hundreds of traditional Mexican Papel picado decorations for us, as well as supplying us with authentic Mexican music. The Embassy will send a representative to present some of the prizes.

To kick start the races on Friday night there will be a calcutter at the Adaminaby Bowling and sports club starting at 6pm. We have a guest presenter for the event and each year this event draws a big crowd.

Every year we have the traditional Fashions on the field as well as the best Themed attire, so put on the sombrero and Mexican mustaches to get right into the day.

Judging takes place around 3.30pm.

The P&C stand will be providing Mexican food; of coarse the refreshment Bar will follow suite.

The Scouts will have an ice cream stand again this year and if the weather holds they should be swamped.

The gates open at 11am for this 6 race event and a bus will be operating from the Big Trout every half hour.

The race card offers $38000 in prize money so a very good field is expected again this year. The first race starts at 1.30pm with the final race at 5pm.

A full bookmakers ring and tote will be operating on the day so you can have a flutter or two.

Naomi and Timmy Burgess are packing their bags to compete in Tasmania.

Third washout this season Cooma Athletics suffered its third cancellation this season as the heavens opened up on Thursday evening. All being well with the Storm Gods this week we will endeavour to get our second week program up and running.

By the way, the ground is looking a great shade of green.

News arrived during the week that they are both have been selected in the NSW Team for the Australian All Schools in Hobart on December 4 to 7.

This is the second year that both of them have been selected in the NSW All Schools Team.

Naomi has been in the team several times now and this with

be her last chance to represent a Cooma high school in a National Schools competition, as the competition only goes up to U/18.

Naomi will be competing in the U/18 100m Hurdles and Hammer Throwing, while younger brother Tim is only Competing in the U/17 Hammer Throwing.

These Championships are a stepping stone to the Australian Junior and Youth Championships next March in Sydney where both will have to step up an age group as from January 1.

This Thursday Night We need to have all athletes there as we will be organising relay trials for all age Groups. So, please all be there.

Cooma Rifle Club Seven shooters and two markers attended last Saturday morning’s shoot for the start of the monthly spoon competition, held from 500 yards. The morning started foggy and windless but that didn’t last long. The wind came up rom the north0east while the clouds strangely moved from the south-west.

The wind became very variable and a lot of trouble to the shooters before finally turning south-west at about 11am. In true Cooma fashion it still whipped around, coming from the south-west, east and north sometimes over just a few minutes. Noel Barret managed the wind well, scoring two 49’s. He hadn’t misidentified the target

for one shot. The off-rifle scores were: (1) Noel Barrett 49-5 and 49-2, total 98-7; (2) Graeme Crundwell 45-2 and 45-2, 90-4; (3) Don Robb 43-0 and 45-2, 88-2 (4) Frank Toth 46-2 and 423, 88-5; (5) Brian Bradley 35-1 and 360, 71-1; (6) Lachlan Thomas 27-0 and 39-1, 66-1.

With handicaps the order was the same.

A bogong moth image in the centre of the target escaped unscathed from the 20 central bulls scored.

Under 15 cricket Cooma under 15 played the Gungahlin Reds at the High School Oval on Saturday in hot conditions and with a quick outfield, Cooma won the toss and decided to bat.

The opening partnership of Lachy Fraser and Joel Smith was excellent with an opening stand of 150 until Lachy Fraser was forced to retire after he hit 100 off 56 balls.

At the other end, the ever reliable Joel Smith grafted out 51, Cooma on top in the batting allowed Harry Roach 39 Ret, Luke Bracher 27N.o. and Jacob Moon 25 N.o. to play their shots and on completion of their 27 overs Cooma totalled 267, In return Gungahlin made a good game of it being 6 down for 173, best bowlers were Justin Locker 1 for 11 off four overs and Shashank

Bokil 2 for 21 off 3 overs bowling spin which made things difficult for the batsman. Matt Moxon in a new role behind the stumps was enthusiastic and busy.

Once again Cooma ground fielding was good and is improving every week.

Mixed pairs semis decided First basketball scholarships The semi finalists in the Monaro District Bowling Association’s mixed pairs championships were decided on Sunday after play at Nimmitabel.

On a very busy weekend of district bowls the third round of the Monaro Clubs Challenge was played at Coolamatong on Saturday.

In the tightest battle Cooma’s Dawn and Ross Russell picked up six shots on the 19th and 20th ends to give them a 18 – 10 win over Jindabyne’s Jenny Smith and Mick Faulder.

They will play another Jindabyne team in the semi finals after Dell and David Turner proved too good for Cooma’s Helen Peuker and Jim Fletcher.

Lorraine West and Neil McGregor had a stunning start in their all Cooma clash with Daphne and Mark Buckley. By the ninth end they had a commanding 21 – 4 lead. While the Buckleys showed their usual fight they could not haul in the deficit and West and McGregor progressed with a 27 – 17 win.

Their opponents in the semis will be Molly Siddle and Tony Butler from Coolamatong who finished strongly to oust Cooma’s Dot and Kevin Jackson. After 17 ends Siddle and Butler had a slender lead of 16 – 13.

They picked up eight shots in winning the last four ends to give them a 25 – 13 win.

The semi finals and final will be played on November 29 at Nimmitabel.

Jindabyne Bowling Club has extended its lead in the Monaro Clubs Challenge following the third round played at Coolamatong on Saturday.

Jindabyne played Nimmitabel on Saturday and won two of the three rinks to win the clash 8 – 3. Craig Kendall, Dave Hall, Del Turner and Ray Nichols were too strong for Rhonda Baker, Fiona Richards, Rod Hassall and Ron Buckley in the fours winning two sets to nil The triples clash between A Knaak, H Knaak and David Turner and Gaile Fitzgerald, Col Batten and Gwen Caldwell was a close battle. The Jindabyne team won the first set 9 – 4.

The second set was a cliff hanger with the Nimmitabel players winning the last two ends to tie the set 8 all. This gave the game to Jindabyne.

Nimmitabel were able to win the pairs in a tie breaker.

Dave Kugler and Phil Jefferson picked up four shots on the last two ends of the first set to edge out Mary Murphy and Bernie Stove 7 – 6. The Nimmitabel pair had their revenge in the second set with a convincing 13 – 6 win. They went on to take the tie breaker 5 – 1.

The clash between Coolamatong and Cooma was almost a carbon copy of the Jindabyne – Nimmitabel clash with Cooma winning one game 2 sets to nil, another 1 – 0 with a tied set and losing the third in a tie breaker.

Neil McGregor and Mel Storta picked up five shots on the last end of the first set with Molly Siddle and Tony Butler to tie the set nineall.

They held the advantage throughout the second set to win it 10 -3 to give the game.

Geoff Venables, Ray Downey and Jim Fletcher were too consistent for Sandy Owen, Jim Hynd and Ron Gammon and won the triples 12 – 2, 13 -2.

The fours had to go to four ends in the tie breaker. Peter Jamieson, Bridget Corby, Kath Sach and Keith Sach won the first set for Coolamatong 9 -6.

Chris Wallace, Ignazio Mondello, Kim Weston and John Schoon steadied and took the second set 11 -6.

The Cooma team drew first blood in the tie breaker with two shots on the first end.

However, the Coolamatong side won the next three ends by a single shot to take the tie breaker 3 -2 to give the match.

Cooma picked up 8 points and Coolamatong 3. After three rounds the Jindabyne leads with 23 points from Adaminaby and Cooma on 13, Nimmitabel 11 and Coolamatong 10. The next round of the challenge will be played on Saturday November 28 at Nimmitabel.

Kate Connolly, Shashank Bokil and Nicole Goggin have won basketball scholarships.

Three Cooma players have been selected to be part of the SERAS basketball program for 2010.

Nicole Goggin (14) and Kate Connolly (13) have been part of Cooma Basketball for many years, having started in the local Mini Ball program. After spending several years in the B grade women’s competition, the two girls and their team Basketbusters moved to A grade

for the last competition where they performed strongly.

Shashank Bokil (14) has only been with the Cooma club this year where he played in the A grade men’s competition. He has shown he is keen to learn and develop his game.

All three will benefit from the training, etc, offered to them in 2010 and the club wishes them well.

Cooma Ladies Golf In the 18-hole competition, Ann Clayton played an excellent game to win with 65 net.

Her fairway play was on song and her putts dropped! As a result of her great play she succeeded in reducing her handicap by three shots. Well done! Lyn Last, who played a very consistent game with accurate chipping, was the runner-up with 74 net.

Balls were won by Gaye Wilson, 75 net, Rulie Steinfort, 76 net, and Marilynne Weston, 77 net.

Marilynne also won the putting with 28 putts.

In the nine-hole competition Maureen Fletcher was the winner with 36 net. Balls were won by Val Leitch, 37 net, and Aileen Smith, 40 net.
