Running for a safe climate A group of first response emergency service personnel including some from the Victorian fire brigades and police force stopped to catch their breath in Jindabyne en route from Cape York Peninsular to Melbourne on Tuesday, November 17. The runners, many of whom were involved in Victoria’s Black Saturday bushfires, were on a mission under the banner “Run for a Safe Climate”, to raise awareness of the fragility of the Australian ecological systems which they were visiting along the way and giving talks at communities and schools. Before making a detour to Charlotte Pass, some of the athletes addressed students at the Snowy Mountains Grammar School. The month-long run, which kicked off from where Captain Cook made landfall at Cooktown, covers
three eastern Australian states, including the length of the Murray River from Tom Groggin Station and then back along the Great Ocean Road, finishes on Melbourne’s St Kilda pier on November 29. The core group of 25 men and women, carries a message stick from the indigenous people in Cooktown. Each runner will run a distance of 300 kilometres over the entire length of the journey. Acting Police Sergeant Matthew Astill said “One person alone cannot complete the 6,000 kilometre journey in one month, but 25 people can achieve the journey as a group, as is the case for a safe climate – one person cannot make a difference but collectively a safer climate can be achieved.” You are invited to seek more information on this initiative by going on line at www. runforasafeclimate.
