“People who think about parking illegally in disabled car parks need to know the demerit point penalty can contribute towards licence suspension and also make drivers ineligible for discounted driver’s licences renewal fees and reduced insurance premiums, said Mr Barilaro. “We want the demerit point to make people think twice before they deny disabled people of these critical par parks in Monaro.

versa.’ Regional councils are equally pleased, noting the opportunities to leverage off the work already being done by Brand Canberra. ‘We’re thrilled to give one united voice to the region,’ said Mayor Dean Lynch. ‘The Canberra Region brand is an opportunity to capitalise on the profile that is already being developed by Brand Canberra and to further its reach and strength.’ ‘The development of a brand for the region will provide a strong platform upon which we can promote our competitive strengths to potential visitors, investors, students, residents and business. This will further enhance the new branding just completed for the Cooma Monaro Shire,’ said Mayor Dean Lynch. ‘And our strength comes from our diversity. There are few other places in Australia, or indeed the world, where you can spend the morning skiing in the mountains and dine on oysters by the ocean in the evening.’ The Canberra Region brand will adopt the use of the iconic CBR logo, which will be displayed alongside council logos. Branding will also offer the opportunity for the region to present one unified voice. A working group will develop a range of assets and activation plans over the coming months with a formal launch expected early next year.

Cooma Hospital decks the halls Dogs in Cooma parks

Staff from the Cooma Hospital participated in a Christmas decoration competition to celebrate the festive season. The competition saw each ward face off in a quest to produce the most creative display, with the Maternity Ward receiving the trophy prize. Pictured above, competition organiser Kelly Morley with Maternity Ward representatives Kaye Pearce and Wendy Frize in front of their decorations.

The Recreational Facilities Committee met on November 20 and discussed several items that were then noted at a Council meeting held on December 8. Included on the agenda was the adoption of dogs being allowed in both Centennial and Norris Parks. The exception to this inclusion of dogs in these areas will be that they cannot be within 10 metres of children’s play areas and food preparation and consumption areas. The current trial has taken place for five months with only one anti-social incident reported, which was resolved itself without intervention from any authority. The committee also proposed that Council develop a proposal for the use of vacant railway land including costs with the Michelago Regional Community Association. It is estimated that the total annual cost of this development would be around $2,250, any lease would also be expected to be for a minimum of five years. This proposal could see a great tourist attraction for the Michelago township. It was also discussed that further reports should be undertaken

into the establishment of an Apex Achievement Park, which would assist in recognising the achievements of our region’s Winter Olympians. Several councilors suggested that more recognition was needed for all of our winter Olympic representatives, who often go unrecognised. The report from the committee meeting included a request from a resident that suggested, “Cooma could become known for its achievers in the Snowy Mountains.” The report also stated that if the park is to envisage all high achievers considerations should also at this time be given to any participants in either recent Olympic or Commonwealth Games. Another point of interest was the creation of a Walking/Mountain Bike Track at Mount Gladstone. An application for further funding for the trail and associated infrastructure was suggested to be submitted to the National Stronger Regions Fund. The plans for the track have been completed and Council was recently made aware of the potential funding available. The first round of applications closed on November 28.

Jindabyne CWA branch Christmas luncheon As ever, lunch at the Christmas meeting of the Jindabyne branch of the CWA was delicious. Once the important business of lunching was completed, Dale Whitfield congratulated the members on their involvement in so many activities over the last few months, culminating in the very popular Christmas craft stalls. So successful were they, the meeting voted unanimously to donate $250 to the Monaro Community Chest. This wonderful organisation was originally set up to assist people with a variety of health issues who needed some financial support. The Community Chest went on to establish two scholarship funds. One will help families who are unable to afford child care fees either because of their socio-economic circumstances or health problems.

The other is entitled “Keeping Kids in Sport”. This fund will be available similarly to families whose circumstances do not permit them to pay for sporting and registration fees for their children. The Monaro Community Chest is available for residents of Snowy River and Cooma-Monaro Shires. It is totally non-discriminatory, nonincome tested and completely confidential. The Jindabyne CWA was delighted to be able to support such a worthy, local organisation. Coast goers warned to slow down these holidays The Member for Monaro John Barilaro has reminded motorists to plan ahead before travelling through the Monaro this holiday season. “Soon the traditional summer pilgrimage to the south coast will begin, I urge all those hitting the Kings Highway to start their coastal holidays to slow down and obey the road rules,” said Mr Barilaro. “Sadly the Kings Highway has claimed too many travellers lives on their way to and from the coast. “I am urging motorists to stay safe these holidays and keep their family safe by not speeding, not driving after drinking and keep your hand off your mobile phone.” The NSW Government has carried out around $20 million in Kings Highway Safety upgrades since 2011. “It’s been a big year of delivery for the NSW Government with another record budget and more than 4,000 projects underway across the state including those in the Monaro,” said

POST & RAIL

the

postman calls

Well The Postman had a very festive Christmas break and sincerely hopes you all did too! Once again, however, The Postman finds himself quite shocked to discover yet another flight has disappeared off the radar! That new iPhone you got for Christmas has the ability to be tracked wherever it goes, it still shocks The Postman that an aircraft with much more advanced technology could possibly disappear like that. In other news, after watching hours and hours of cricket over the last few days, The Postman had to have a good giggle at Maxwell’s dismissal in the Big Bash. The light-up bails were the icing on the cake to what this cricket loving individual could only call a comical display of batting - ending in the world’s most hilarious Golden Duck. Not to mention the look on Adam Gilchrist’s face as commentator. Priceless. All of us at The Monaro Post have been very pleased to report that so far this festive season has been quite safe for most in the region, with little news on the emergency services front. We sincerely hope that you continue to enjoy your holidays and bring in 2015 safe, healthy and in fine fettle.

Make time for things that matter Editor, As the end of the year approaches, it’s common for us to reflect on the year that’s been and what lies ahead in 2015. In many respects 2014 has been a testing year. The deaths of Robin Williams and Charlotte Dawson, for example, saw an outpouring of community feeling and a neverbefore-seen willingness to talk openly about depression, anxiety and suicide. Record numbers of people contacted beyondblue’s support service for help or advice. As a community, the penny seems to have dropped that depression doesn’t discriminate. More recent events in Sydney, Cairns and overseas may have tested our trust in our fellow human beings, but in many ways have brought us closer together. At times like this it’s even more important that we make the time for the people and activities that bring us joy, rekindle friendships, put aside technology and connect with each other. And stand up to intolerance of difference, in whatever form that difference takes. With one in six Australians experiencing depression and/or anxiety at any time, beyondblue also

encourages all Australians to look out for themselves and others this coming year, and not neglect their mental health and wellbeing. If you have been feeling down or excessively worried for longer than a couple of weeks check out the beyondblue website or contact our support service on 1300 22 46 36 any time of the night or day to speak to a trained mental health professional about what you can do to get your life back on track. Exercising regularly, eating healthy food, getting enough sleep and not overdoing the alcohol will help. A New Year pledge to yourself to Tune in, Open Up and Take one step for your mental health can be made on our website http://www.beyondblue. org.au/get-involved/the-beyondbluenational-roadshow/make-your-mentalhealth-pledge. In six months, we’ll email it back to you – as a reminder of your commitment, or a pat on the back for your achievements. I wish you a happy, safe and mentally healthy year ahead. Snowy Mountains on the international stage Minister for Regional Tourism John Barilaro said the increasing appetite from the Indian market to include regional NSW into travel itineraries builds upon the strong results in the year ending September 2014, which saw 86,500 visitors from India come to NSW, who stayed 3.2 million nights and spent $192 million. Mr Barilaro said a new tourism initiative in India, features the State’s spectacular Snowy Mountains and showcases regional NSW as a desirable year-round tourist destination. “We are continuing to work with travel agents and wholesalers to develop a series of itineraries to showcase regional NSW,” Mr Barilaro said. “Last month we welcomed our first group of Indian tourists, who experienced the Snowy Mountains on a coach tour through the Kosciuszko National Park, which included three nights in Thredbo Village. “Our visitors enjoyed fantastic walking trails through the National Park, including taking photos of the

spectacular scenery. “The new initiative is a key strategy for increasing visitation and this activity is seen as a great opportunity to contribute to the goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure in NSW by 2020. “Visitors who come to the region in summer, spring and autumn can enjoy fishing in pristine streams, exploring historic towns like Cooma, Nimmitabel and Tumbarumba and enjoy fantastic local bars, restaurants and cafes. “The NSW Government is also investing in regional tourism with the new $110 million Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund to support critical visitor economy infrastructure,” Mr Barilaro said. This initiative comes on top of the success of the Jhappi Time campaign launched earlier this year. Jhappi Time was launched in February and is the only tourism campaign implemented by an Australian state tourism body that specifically targets the visiting friends and relatives market in India.

Be sensible with safety this silly season NSW Ambulance paramedics are reminding people not to over-extend themselves this Christmas/New Year period to avoid spending the festive season in hospital. This time of year traditionally sees our paramedics respond to injuries resulting from misadventure, particularly when those activities are mixed with the consumption of alcohol. NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Brian Lakin said that during the eight day period from Christmas Day 2013 to New Year’s Day 2014, Sydney paramedics were kept extra busy treating patients injured in water activities or involving bicycles. “We received at least 40 calls related to swimming and other water recreation activities, ranging from near drownings, to people suffering suspected spinal injuries or

dislocations in the surf. A proportion of calls also involved people being hit by surf boards,” Duty Operations Manager Craig Watkins said. At least 30 bike-related incidents involved people falling off them, crashing and colliding with other cyclists and vehicles. One toddler was treated after catching his fingers in a bike chain;another for being trapped between the bike frame and the pedal. Trampolines, often given as Christmas presents, also proved dangerous. Twelve people suffered injuries ranging from sprains to broken bones. Among these was a 48-year-old woman who suffered a neck injury, and children involved in head clashes while jumping together. “If it’s been a few years since you’ve attempted a highly physical activity, it’s best avoided. This includes performing backflips on

trampolines and into swimming pools, which resulted ina number of injuries last Christmas period.” Other injuries included two people who suffered fractured bones while dancing, an 18-yearold male injured on a slip ‘n’ slide, and a 29-year-old male who suffered a fractured arm while arm wrestling. NSW Ambulance Duty Manager Craig Watkins urged people to take preventative measures to avoid spending their holidays in hospital. “People should swim between the flags and avoid walking along dangerous rock shelves and entering heavy surf, particularly if they have any pre-existing physical conditions which would leave them vulnerable to injury,” he said.

DOM Watkins said the potential for misadventure was exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol, and advised that people use common sense when undertaking any activity.

One stop climate portal For the first time communities, businesses and councils in South Eastern NSW will have access to climate change information down to the nearest 10km allowing them to build resilience to extreme events and plan for future. The new data is available from today through the NARCLiM research partnership between the NSW and ACT governments and Climate modellers at the University of NSW. In Southern Eastern NSW the projections vary across the region – from coastal Eden up to the Alps and through towns on the Monaro such as Cooma. Changes in temperature will mean more hot days and fewer cold nights. Changes in annual rainfall are small and within the current year-to-year variability. There will be seasonal changes in rainfall with less spring and winter rainfall and more rain in autumn. There will begin to be reductions in spring rainfall by 2030. The largest changes are along the Snowy Mountains where there is expected to be about 15 fewer cold nights each year by 2030 and almost 50 fewer cold nights by 2070. Winter and spring rainfall is also expected to decrease in the Snowy

Mountains by 2030 and larger decreases out to 2070. The projections cover changes in temperature, rainfall, wind, fire weather, humidity, evaporation, and over 100 other climate variables out to 2070. Changes in South Eastern NSW and the Tablelands include: · The south-east is expected to experience an increase in average, maximum and minimum temperatures of around 0.7 degrees for the near future (2030) and 2 degrees in the far future (2070); · Summer will see the largest change, with maximum temperatures increasing by up to 2.9 degrees by 2070; · Around Bega we will start to see more hot days each year and by 2070 there will be twice as many days above 35 degrees than now; · Along the Snowy Mountains there will be far fewer cold nights, potentially impacting on natural ecosystems and snow tourism; These projections provide the

clearest picture so far of the expected impacts of climate change in all areas of NSW. They are available through Government’s new climate information portal AdaptNSW, which provides clear easy-to-read snap shot for South Eastern NSW and the Tablelands and allows people to access information by entering a location.

It inspired numerous others including his sons Neil and Ian as well as my step-son Chris Knight to explore the dramatic western faces of the Main Range. I always know it has been a good snow year if orders come in during September and October. By 1996 Alan was ready to go with Rainforest and Ravished Snow. Half of this book dealt with his bushwalks on the Comboyn and in the Upper Manning River area, one in which some of his relatives once lived and where Ian, his son, still owns a plot of bush. After skiing became too hard for him, Alan often went there to walk and communicate with nature. print runs not commercially viable for big publishing houses but important nevertheless. In 1998 I received the manuscript for Earliest Monaro and Burragorang, his last major work. It is jam-packed with historical detail, black and white photos, many handdrawn maps and references. Part of it deals with early attempts to cross the Blue Mountains. It has been well received by old Monaro families and local historians. His books have been selling steadily for the last 20 years and will continue to do so for a long time. I often say ‘History doesn’t age, it just gets older’. Before I came along Alan published a number of books through Blubber Head Press including, as editor, A Journey from Sydney to the Australian Alps (1834) by Dr John Lhotsky and Hume and Hovell (1824). Lhotsky came across the Limestone Plains. Alan also enjoyed printing, binding and publishing small hand-made books including Where the Wombat Goes. He starting writing in 1950, 64 years ago, when he was a young 24. On one of our day trips he took me on to Twynam West Spur and showed me the gap in the cornices through which I could thread my long, pencil rulers (touring skis) and descend into Siren Song Creek. ‘Ski down there?’ I thought, and went off to sit at the end of the Crags to bask in the sun and contemplate the long vista to the crouching lion Jagungal. He, meanwhile, wasted no time and in a series of adroit, light as a feather, linked turns, leapt, carved and flew into the sirens arms. It was Rudolf Nureyev (a famous ballet dancer from the 1980s) delicately balanced on a couple of plastic planks in the steepest snow country we have. About the same time I discovered he adored the Australian Ballet and the stunning, lithe, pink-clad ballerinas. The ballet must have rubbed off for it was ballet on skis that he displayed that memorable day. Writing this about Alan, the word ‘fey’ kept bouncing around inside my head. The dictionary explained. It means, ‘as if enchanted, under a spell and aware of supernatural influences’. Yes, that was Alan all over and that’s what explains his love of skiing, his poetry, his wry sense of humour, some of his drawings and his ability to morph from a cheeky Shakespearean imp to a serious historian over the same cup of tea. This poem he wrote after ascending Twynam North Spur could be his epitaph: We leave our stately sentinel And pass on through the Arc of Trees, Then upwards still and cross the snowbridge, There possibly to take our ease, But not for long; it’s on to Twynam To the throne to pay our dues And find our fealty rewarded The granting of the kingdom’s keys. You may be sure we will not waste them. Full many a secret we’ll explore. Full many a slope will feel our ski-tips: Past craggy slate and granite tor, Down gullies steep and awesome, We’ll ski them all, you may be sure. So when at last we hand the keys in, As needs we must – so stands the Law – There’ll be no need for compensation. There’ll be no need to ask for more. I will miss him, his annual hand-illustrated and written Christmas cards, his tightly composed letters often with poetry, his years of support and all that he stood for with all my heart for the rest of my days. His books, meanwhile, will continue to inspire, educate and enlighten a new generation of high country lovers. (Klaus is a Canberra based author, photographer, publisher and book distributor. On track for the trek of a lifetime Husband and wife team Sonja and Jakob Beckerhoff have completed a mammoth 718 km, eight week ‘Hike for Huts’ through the Australia Alps. This trek, which saw them traverse three states on foot, started on the October 16 in Walhalla Victoria, passed Australia’s highest mountain at Kosciuszko, and will end in Tharwa ACT. Before departing, Ms Beckerhoff said, “It started off as a personal challenge and it still is. Then people kept asking us if we would do something for charity and we realised they had a valid point. We looked at charities which aligned with ourselves and the walk”. The Beckerhoffs approached the non-government organisation the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, and are raising funds for the Kosciuszko Historic Huts. The Foundation will grant the funds to the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service for the maintenance and restoration of the huts. First created more than 150 years ago, the huts were built by everyone from stockmen to skiers to use as protection and accommodation. There are 80 across the Snowy Mountains and many have been damaged by bushfire, so the Hike for Huts aims to raise funds to repair them. Ms Beckerhoff said, “I encourage you to support our journey and the historic huts by donating at fnpw.

org.au/hike-for-huts”. She said that the couple may use the huts, which have simple facilities, “to have an opportunity to sit on something”, but would still sleep in their tents. It’s hard to know if the hike will have been a bigger physical or mental test. While pushing themselves physically is one aspect of the journey, Ms Beckerhoff acknowledged that it would be challenging on their relationship. “It is a long way to walk,” she laughed. “We won’t have any support team, we won’t be hitting any resorts, settlements, any civilisation and we’ll be carrying all our own gear.” The longest they’ve ever hiked together previously is 12 days. “I do think it will strengthen our relationship,” she said. “There is no one else to turn to.” Ms Beckerhoff recalled a previous trip where they arrived back in Jindabyne and the quiet mountain town, in the midst of summer, seemed like a bustling Sydney. “It is strange when you come back,” she said. “It challenges you on a personal level but it is wonderful to have that time being at one with nature and experience the pristine surrounds.” So far $1,855 has been raised for the maintenance of the historic huts.

Medicare changes impact Rural doctors are uniting behind the request for the Federal Government to carefully consider the consequences that recently announced Medicare changes will have on the bush. Prof Dennis Pashen, President of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA), said that the combined impact of the changes could ultimately affect access to services; the ability of communities to recruit and retain doctors; and the sustainability of rural practices. “Rural communities are already mostly doing it hard. Collectively, they are less affluent than metropolitan areas, have higher burdens of disease; poorer access to services and increased health care costs,” Dr Pashen said. “The announced changes will force rural doctors to pass on increasing costs to patients, providing yet another barrier to rural patients accessing quality primary health care.” “These changes will have a cumulative impact on the sustainability of rural practices on a number of levels. “Rural general practices are also small businesses. The indexation freeze of MBS rebates (meaning that rebates will not go up for the next four years, even though all other costs such as overheads and salaries will continue to climb), is going to put them under increased

pressure. “While they are intended to discourage high-throughput models of practice, the new minimum times for Level A and B consultations may have unintended consequences and impact on the ability of rural doctors to balance the provision of high quality care and meeting the needs of a large number of patients.” Prof Pashen also said that the changes were bad public health policy and an unfair attack on general practice. “Evidence shows that investment in an open access primary care sector is the most cost effective approach, resulting in better health outcomes. “RDAA supports the government in its efforts to make the health care system more efficient, and we appreciate the exemptions for concession card holders and children, and the retention of bulk billing incentives and associated rural loadings. “We acknowledge the need to develop funding models for general practice which incentivise high quality, holistic and continuous primary care which meets community needs and we are willing to work constructively and collaboratively with government and other stakeholders to achieve these outcomes. “But this policy isn’t it.”

Bug detectives and platypuses Road smart kids app launches at Cooma North Public School for summer holiday trips Stage One children from Cooma North Public School had a great time learning about bugs, river health, and the environment when Landcare & Waterwatch visited last week. The children also talked about Platypuses – their habitat and how they live. “It’s exciting to see how knowledgeable the kids are about native animals” explained Antia Brademann from Waterwatch, “they were so keen to share their own stories and learn more about Platypuses and about how they need healthy rivers to thrive”. The children did some work as “river detectives” finding bugs in water from the Cooma Creek so they could determine whether the creek is healthy or unhealthy. “They really got into it, there were lots of bugs for them to find and they were so engaged”. “Activities such as this are a fun and practical way for students to learn about nature first hand and the role it plays in the health of our environment and community,” explained Robin Sevenoaks, Chair of Upper Snowy Landcare. Upper Snowy Landcare enjoys working with kids and their annual Calender is always a hit. Local school students submit artwork and the best are selected for printing. “This year’s Calendar is just out, and it has a river theme so these school visits tie in well with our healthy habitats message”.

Wednesday 17 December 2014: The National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) has gone live with ‘Road Smart Kids’, its first ever app designed to combine road safety education with interactive games for children aged five to eight. NRMA President Kyle Loades said the app launch was timed to coincide with the Christmas/New Year holiday break. “The NRMA Road Smart Kids app, which is the first Australian road safety app of its kind, will keep boredom at bay with its interactive and educational games on the long family road trip these summer holidays.” Mr Loades said “Young children will enjoy the colour, movement, sound effects and variety of games. Different characters bring the games to life spreading road and bike safety messages”. The NRMA Road Smart Kids app is free to download and has no in-app advertising or purchases, this helps users concentrate on the games and the safety messages. The app includes five interactive games which combine fun with important road safety messages. 1. Car Wash Challenge Beat the clock while cleaning the NRMA Roadside

Assist patrol van – just make sure you don’t splash the cat or Patrolman Dan! 2. Eye Spy Safari A fun digital version of a classic road trip game. 3. Number Plate Playroom Create wacky sentences using words, 4. Go Stop Go Join Patrolman Dan on a 3D animated journey as he drives through town. On the way, learn more about being safe on the road. 5. Street Smarts Vehicles come to life in 3D. The NRMA Road Smart Kids app makes it easy for parents and teachers to talk to young children about road and bike safety, using 3D animations that show safe behaviour. The app can be used anywhere. Parents can play the games too and discuss safe road and bike use behaviour, in the classroom, teachers can discuss road safety and of course in the car, it’s an educational and fun tool to keep children amused while they learn important road safety tips. The NRMA Road Smart Kids app is available for download from Apple or Google Playstore. Contact: Lisa Kable 0439 133 113 lisa. kable@mynrma.com.au

With the busy holiday season fast approaching, it is time to check that our pets will be safe. With more people visiting our towns, the risk of our pets becoming frightened increases in response to the extra noise and traffic associated with the seasons festivities. Additionally, the potential for fireworks noise and summer thunder storms may also cause animals to panic and take fright, often escaping from secure yards. As a part of your holiday preparations please take the time to consider the family’s beloved pets by: • Micro-chipping and registering them with Council

Keeping Eden-Monaro kids safe in the water Families living in Eden-Monaro will benefit from a new initiative aimed at increasing water safety for young children. The Member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Peter Hendy, said the initiative was aimed at children under five and teaching them about water safety. Dr Hendy said the new programme consists of songs, videos and books which communicate the water safety message in a fun and engaging format for youngsters. “Child care centres, kindergartens, play groups and water safety organisations in Eden-Monaro have or will receive the educational packs,” Dr Hendy said. “More than 80,000 are being distributed nationally and they are available online at www.kidsalive. com.au “The programme has been developed by water safety campaigner and former Olympic swimming coach Laurie Lawrence and builds on his highly successful Living with Water DVD. “It teaches our children how to be safe at the beach, around pools, rivers and dams which is crucial to keep our kids safe this summer,” Dr Hendy said.

Dr Hendy said that the 2014 National Drowning Report showed that 20 children aged under five had drowned between July 2013 and June 2014. “As families and communities we need to work together to reduce the tragedy of drowning. We need to make sure that we are water safe. The programme for children under five is one component of the Australian Government’s comprehensive approach to water safety. The Government recently announced a $4 million investment to assist the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia’s work to prevent drowning in inland waterways. Other programmes are delivered by AUSTSWIM and Surf Life Saving under a $15 million commitment from the Government to reduce drownings nationwide. Australia Post is supporting the new children’s programme meaning more children and families will benefit from receiving the educational material. “I hope that by educating children about water safety they will be able to enjoy themselves in and around water without harm,” Dr Hendy said.

WilderQuest tours get kids active and outdoors over school holidays With school holidays around the corner, it’s the perfect time to book a WilderQuest tour for the kids. WilderQuest tours are led by NSW National Parks rangers and designed to inspire a love of nature in kids aged 5 to 12. Locally, children can join Ranger Sam’s Adventure in Kosciuszko National park on January 5 and 7. In Merimbula, there is a rockpool ramble on January 13 or a snorkel ad=venture on January 6 and 15. Kids can visit Trial Bay Gaol in South West Rocks and solve the mysteries of its former inmates, or climb the magnificent Smoky Cape Lighthouse in Hat Head National Park. They can explore the rocky shores of Bouddi National Park and Munmorah State Conservation Area on a WilderQuest special sea creature treasure hunt, or join an Aboriginal bush tucker and tools workshop in Brisbane Water National Park. If you’re in Sydney over the holidays, kids can discover crusty crabs and mighty mangroves in Ku-ringgai Chase National Park, or become a bug detective in Dharawal National Park. There are close to 60 events in 15 national parks during the school holidays, with a range of exciting

adventures that the whole family can enjoy. Whether you’re hanging at home or holidaying in NSW, there’s a WilderQuest ranger-guided tour to enjoy this summer. Families can also keep track of important dates, with a free printable WilderQuest 2015 calendar. To start the WilderQuest experience, kids can download the app or visit the website. Inspired by research which found a growing disconnect between children and nature, the online program is filled with fun videos, games and interactive tasks that encourage kids to explore, play and learn about the natural world online. The latest addition to the online program is WilderQuest Campfire, which allows kids to celebrate and interact with Aboriginal culture. Led by friendly Ranger Pip, kids can make a ground oven, find materials to make bush tools and hand stencils, look for bush tucker and learn about Aboriginal language and culture. WilderQuest is a great place for children to learn about the natural world online, before joining a WilderQuest ranger-guided tour to continue their journey outdoors in a NSW national park. To see all WilderQuest tours over the school holidays, visit: www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/Whats-On/wilderquest

WormBoss founder retires after 50 years in industry than guessing like a dill!. “I needed to do something that was different to attract some attention and promote our message a bit harder, he said. “I sat down on the verandah with my guitar one Saturday afternoon and was just messing around and then I just wrote the song in about 10 minutes flat. “I got a professional to do the backing tracks and recording, but was told I had to sing it - that certainly made it a bit different and it did the rounds pretty quickly after that. Mr Le Feuvre worked for Queensland’s various departments of primary industries from 1964 to 2005, before moving into private consultancy with an on-going role assisting with the WormBoss Newsletter. His career posts included time in Julia Creek and Charleville before he took the opportunity to complete a Graduate Diploma in Rural Extension SHEEP SALES COMMENCE AT 10AM, CURFEW 8AM at Hawkesbury College, NSW, which exposed him to new theories

After 50 years of serving the Australian sheep industry, Arthur Le Feuvre has retired. Mr Le Feuvre helped establish the WormBoss program through the Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation (Sheep CRC), and is renowned throughout the industry for going to colourful lengths to grab producer attention to encourage practice change. Most famously he penned the WormBoss song, which included lyrics like “The Boss says test resistance to be sure which drenches kill, It’s much more cost effective

of communication. He then moved to Cunnamulla and Warwick. He became a regular on ABC rural radio and television programs, and in 1974 tried to put his new communications skills into action by starting a district newsletter for sheep producers in Queensland’s South West. “When this was floated to branch management, it was rejected on the grounds of ‘no budget’. However, during a visit to Brisbane head office, I found there was a room full of unused Roneo machines, paper and the necessary stencils. A six-pack of beer and a friendly chat to the relevant clerk resulted in my returning to Cunnamulla with the acquired goods under the tarp. “The monthly newsletter was a hit, but it was six months before management found out what was happening and by then it was too late. He said trying new ways of engaging producers with industry research was essential when many sheep breeders had an entrenched reluctance to change.

“In my entire career, I was most frustrated by the reticence of producers to change their management, Mr Le Feuvre said. “So we tried to get people talking about these ideas because the more people hear about a practice, the more they think it’s normal and something they should do. It’s much more effective than having an expert or government official telling them what to do, which they always resist. He said the WormBoss program was the stand out achievement of his career. “There has definitely been a change in worm management practices in the sheep industry, and I think that we succeeded with WormBoss because we were able to recruit all facets of the industry to back this as a good thing to do and to tell producers to think about the issue of parasite resistance, he said. He now spends his time as a full time carer for his 100-year-old father in Caboolture, but hopes to find a few more chances to take the tinny out for a spot of fishing.

doors to the consumer market and introduces Australian Merino wool to customers previously unaware of the fibre’s infinite potential. Comprising sweaters, cardigans, dresses, vests, skirts and scarves, the collection used fine Merino wool with a micron of 19.5 and was designed by the two winners of Project Runway Vietnam: Hoang Minh Ha and Ly Giam Tien. Canifa’s Merino wool collection embodies minimalism with elegant style, creating pieces which transition office attire to elegant everyday wear. “Canifa’s slogan is fashion for all, meeting the demands of consumers of all ages and for all occasions, explains Canifa CEO Ms Doan Bich Ngoc. “Thanks to The Woolmark Company’s introduction to wool in Vietnam, the domestic apparel market has seen some great changes, benefitting consumers with fashionable products meeting international standards. “Canifa is honoured to be the first Vietnamese fashion brand certified to use the Woolmark and Woolmark Blend logos. The fashion show will launch the Australian Merino Wool collection; the first successful step in cooperation between Canifa and The Woolmark Company, bringing new opportunities for both Canifa and the Vietnamese textile industry.

Vietnamese apparel manufacturer and retailer Canifa has released a range of Woolmark-certified apparel in time for winter in the northern hemisphere and as part of The Woolmark Company’s ‘Out of Vietnam’ project. After sell-out success last winter with Woolmark Blend knitwear, Canifa has produced a 53-piece collection for men, women and children which not only includes Woolmark Blend apparel, but also clothing made from 100 per cent Merino wool, gaining Woolmark certification. As the first Woolmark licensee to come out of Vietnam, Canifa is also the first to produce 100 per cent Merino wool apparel to sell in the domestic market. The collection will be officially launched December 20 with a fashion show in Hanoi, sending models down the runway dressed top to toe in Australian Merino wool. “Canifa’s Woolmark-certified collection is a significant advancement for The Woolmark Company’s Out of Vietnam project, which was launched in 2012, says The Woolmark Company Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer Rob Langtry. “Initially launched to develop a sustainable supply chain in Vietnam and expand its current manufacturing sector, Canifa’s retail success extends far beyond the trade sector, opening

The entire playing squad will attend the three-day camp which will combine fitness and skills training with team-building activities. While in Jindabyne, the team will take advantage of the opportunity to meet their Snowy Mountains fans at a barbecue on the evening of January 5. All are welcome to attend the event at which players will meet and greet fans and do signings. Mark Corbett.

Glen Simmons. On Sunday December 21 we had 80 shooters compete at the Cooma Field & Game Christmas clay target shoot at the Middlingbank range. This annual shoot consists of numerous events that are included in the 75 targets. The Christmas event is the last for the year and our Club Champions are awarded at this time. Bill Warriner was awarded Cooma Under & Over Club Champion for 2014. The Side by Side Club Champion for 2014 was Mark Corbett. The shoot also includes a trophy and sash for the winner of the side by side “Springing Teal” section. The “Springing Teal” is a target that is sent almost vertically into the air and the shooter who hits the most of these during the shoot is declared the “Springing Teal” Champion. This year, the event was won by Trevor Heise with a score of 27/27. A novelty “Turner Teams” tower shoot is conducted at the conclusion of the shoot day and this was won by Krista Mower and Phil Craig scoring 19/20. This year we recognised the hard work done by our former club Presidents, Richard Mould and Richard Seears. Glen Simmons was awarded the club person of the year. A special thanks to the Nassar family, who cooked Christmas lunch and to the members who provided the salads and desserts for the day and a special thanks to Robin Perkins and Rhonda White for running the office throughout the year. It was also an opportunity to show off the improvements and works done to the facilities at the club throughout the year by the new committee. We also held a brief silence to mark the passing of David Cook, a Bermagui member and valued supporter of the Cooma club, he will be missed. We had shooters attend from Canberra, Victoria, Bermagui and Sydney as well as the locals.

Trevor Heise.

Krista Mower and Phil Craig.

The Brumbies represent the ACT and Southern New South Wales and the Snowy Mountains is an important part of that catchment area. “We relish any opportunity to get out to different areas of the region and visit our fans,” said Team Manager, Ben Gathercole. “It’s wonderful to have the Snowy Mountains close by to our base in Canberra. Jindabyne will provide a stunning backdrop for our training camp and will allow us to explore some different types of training such as hiking.” The Brumbies 2015 Super Rugby season will kick off on the evening of Friday February 13 with a home game against the Reds at GIO Stadium.

Good social bowls enjoyed at Cooma Saturday bowls were played in perfect weather conditions and three games were able to be played. These being two games of Triples and a game of Pairs. Sergio Roncelli, Daphne Buckley and Neil McGregor held their own against Mario Frezza, Maureen D’Amico and Richard Nichols for the first seven ends and led by three shots. Richard’s team then won six ends to race to a lead of 19 – 11. From then on the ends were shared and so were the points, and Richard’s team won by 26 – 17. In the other game of triples Ron Wainwright, Guilio D’Anico and Colin “Red” Roberson held Steve Lapham, Ignazio Mondello and Paul Cannell on three shots for nine ends while they scored 18. This pretty well summed up the game as Red’s team ran out comfortable winners 28 – 13. In the Pairs game John Hollaway (a visitor from Dapto) teamed up with Peter Caldwell and played Peter Marsicano and Mark Buckley. This was a very even game score wise and it was only in the last few ends that Peter and Mark were able to put a few ends together to close out winners 23 – 17. Two games of Pairs and a game of Triples were played on Sunday in ideal conditions. Ken Rees, Dennis Steinfort and Neil McGregor let Sergio Roncelli, Richard Nichols and Guilio D’Amico slip out to an 8 shot lead by end nine.

From then on Neil’s team outscored their opposition but could not reel in the deficit to go down by five shots. Mario Frezza and Geoff Venables hosted John Holloway, our Dapto visitor, and President Red. Geoff and Mario got away to a flyer only to be pegged back and by end 14 there was only one shot in it. The Pres and his Visitor then went back to sleep to allow Geoff and Mario a seven shot victory. John Vincent and Mark Buckley played Cobber Seears and Paul Cannell in what was a close game except for the first four ends when John and Mark skipped away to a six shot lead. From then on it was fairly even with Paul and Cobber having the better of the scoring. However the early lead was too much to pull back and John and Mark held on to win by five shots. In the only triples championship game to be decided on the weekend Tony Brooks made a belated return to bowls to skip Alan Crowe and Col Whiting (subbing for Bob Lahy) and they were up against Ron Wainwright’s team of Peter Harris and Mick Mayhew. This game was relatively close up to end 10, where Tony’s team were only two shots behind. Then for nine ends they didn’t move while Ron’s team added a further 17 shots, this stole the match right away and they finished comfortable winners.

Changed boating conditions on Lake Jindabyne for ski nationals Boaters are advised to keep clear of a section of Lake Jindabyne for the safe staging of the Ski Racing Australia Nationals. Roads and Maritime Services has granted an exclusive use aquatic licence from Tuesday 6 January to Sunday 11 January between 9am and 5pm each day. Boaters should avoid an area from 100 metres north of Willow Bay and north to the southernmost point of McEvoy Island, west to 100 metres off Colorado Point, south to Clay Pit Beach and east to the South Arm including all waters of the South Arm.

All areas will be monitored by control vessels. Vessels must not enter the exclusive use area unless authorised by a boating safety officer or a police officer. Boaters are asked to follow directions. Failure to comply with directions can result in fines. Roads and Maritime reminds people to wear a lifejacket when boating, especially in craft smaller than 4.8 metres when alone, in alpine waters, at night or offshore. For maritime safety information, visit www.maritime.nsw.gov.au.

Lake Jindabyne speed and marathon championships

- Benjamin Baker The Australian speed and marathon championships are being held on Lake Jindabyne on the 7, 8, 9 and 10th of January, 2015. The 2014/15 ski racing season is about halfway through, and after a break in racing over the Christmas period, the event at Jindabyne will be the first chance for boats and skiers to get out on the water in 2015 to fight it out and try to take home an Australian title. The racing over the four days will showcase a variety of skill levels including all age classes from the future stars in under 10s to the seasoned campaigners in 50+ category, and many engine classes ranging right up to the unlimited superclass boats, towing some of the best skiers in the world. As well as the expert classes there will be marathon races which require the competitors to ski on a variety of different skis including double finless skis and a plank, which is exactly as it sounds, a square ended timber plank with no bindings or fins. These marathons require tremendous skill and technique from both the skiers and the guys in the boat.

Showjumping festival 2014 The date is set. Lock it in. Snowy Mountains Showjumping Festival, held at The Statoin Resort, is back for 2015 with four huge days of jumping.

Starting on Friday January 2 to Tuesday January 6, with a rest day in the middle on the Sunday. A three-ring program will be in operation.

Check out our page now by following the links from our website www.monaropost.com.au

This year they have combined the Aussie titles with the 5th out of 7 World selection races. The best skiers in Australia will be battling it out in order to be selected to represent the country at the 2015 world titles in New Zealand. The world selection races take place on the Thursday where spectators will be able to see the best f1, f2 and junior teams in the country. All the racing (both Aussie titles and world selections) take place on a circuit course out the front of the LJH with great vantage points over the entire course from the water’s edge. For those lucky enough to still be on holidays come and check out all the action through the week. But don’t stress if your back to work by then, there’ll be plenty of racing on the Saturday for a great day out. If you’re into big engines, good looking machines and high speed racing (over 120mph in the right water!) then get out to Lake Jindabyne and check it all out! I’m a Cooma local and it’s great to have an event close to home for a change! Throughout a season I rack up a lot of kms travelling

around the country to race, as far north as Grafton and a number of races down in Vic including Echuca and Mildura. It’s fantastic that the organisers have chosen Jindabyne to hold the Aussie titles again. I’m very much looking forward to racing as it’s the first meet back after a break over Christmas, and I’m hoping a home lake advantage might give me a bit of an edge, but I’m mostly hoping the Jindabyne weather will cooperate and give us some good conditions to perform well in. I have only been racing for two years so don’t have as much experience as most of my competition but was lucky to grab a third in the 25-30 age class last year. I will be trying to back that result up or even improve it if I can this year, as well as competing in the MOC (modified outboard class). I’m also looking forward to watching the world selection races on the Thursday. These races are a good chance to see all the best guys and girls in the country pushing themselves to beat one another. Most of these skiers are capable of ridiculous speeds up over the 200km/h mark and they are very impressive to watch.
