EDEN CENTRE
The Eden Welcome Centre celebrated its first birthday in May and what a successful year it has been! The Eden Visitor Information Centre relocated to the newly constructed Welcome Centre building and opened to much fanfare with Community Open Days that saw 3500 people through its doors in its first weekend. Since then, the number of visitors to the centre has doubled from previous years. “We’ve seen record breaking numbers through our doors since opening,” Centre Manager, Clair Mudaliar, said. “Including more than 25,000 visitors through the summer months of December to February alone. “Increased visitation to the Centre translates to more people we are able to showcase Eden to, resulting in a better, well rounded experience for the visitor and extended stay length. It also means that the Centre has been able to support small local businesses not only through recommendations and brochure displays but by selling local products. “We’ve sold a crazy amount of local product and souvenirs in our first year at the wharf - 1182 jars/bottles of locally made jams and sauces, 1142 books about local subject matter or by local authors, and 1759 fridge magnets – just to name a few items - that’s a lot of “Eden” that visitors have taken home with them!” Ms Mudaliar said. The building and its operations have received numerous accolades during its first year of operation including the Eden Visitor Information Centre winning a prestigious New South Wales Tourism award, Cox Architecture taking out the Excellence in the Use of Recycled Timber award at the Australian Timber Design Awards, and Highly Commended in the category of Terminal of the Year at the Australian Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards. Port Authority of NSW, the Eden Visitor Information Centre and the Bega Valley Regional Gallery marked the Eden Welcome Centre’s first birthday with a celebration onsite on May 12. The community and visitors were able to participate in the celebrations through art demonstrations including a workshop on painting your own mini canvas of the Eden Wharf and its inhabitants with materials supplied, and local indigenous art demonstrations including painting (with Alison Simpson) and basket weaving (with Trina Harrison). The official cake cutting was attended by some special guests - the Captain and Officers of the HMAS Supply - the Royal Australian Navy ship that has named Eden its ceremonial home port. The celebrations not only marked the opening of the building but also the first birthday of the new Eden Visitor Information Centre and BVRG: PORT (Bega Valley Regional Gallery’s satellite exhibition space).

S A P P H I R E C O A S T T O G O W O N D E R F U L LY W I L D I N C A N B E R R A After a stop-start few years of campaigning to deal with bushfires and the pandemic, Sapphire Coast Destination Marketing says the time is right to lock into a new destination brand campaign. With vital funding support from the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, Sapphire Coast launched the Wonderfully Wild Sapphire Coast campaign on May 26, with a big push into the lucrative Canberra market. Anthony Osborne, Managing Director of Sapphire Coast Destination Marketing, said this campaign was all about a renewed focus on our strengths and building a new platform to deal with the competitive years ahead. “We are seeing the domestic market becoming increasingly cluttered with destinations focusing on nature-based tourism. Everyone is positioning under the ‘we are so natural’ banner. “Whilst we will always tell the story of our incredible natural landscape and wildlife, Wonderfully Wild Sapphire Coast is designed to embrace the amazing characters, experiences and community that binds us. The creative platform is powerful and versatile and allows us to present the landscape and people as warm, welcoming and inspiring, whilst echoing our incredibly unique natural backdrop,’’ Mr Osborne said. Mr Osborne went on to describe the Canberra market as the key focus.
‘’It is great to have an improved investment of marketing dollars, and the temptation for some might be to try and put a tick in every box. But our campaign has a laser sharp focus on the Canberra market, it lays important building blocks to develop a long and rewarding relationship with a well-located, well-heeled market that has a strong fit to who we are, and where we want to go as a destination,’’ Mr Osborne said. A large array of campaign imagery and video will be readily available to the tourism industry in the form of an online toolkit; a welcome initiative that will help build awareness and support according to Eden Tourism Manager, Clair Mudaliar. ‘’We were fortunate to get a preview just recently and we absolutely love the campaign and look forward to getting right behind it. “The content and imagery being made available to the tourism industry will give the campaign some more legs and we will be encouraging our local businesses to make the most out of it,” Ms Mudaliar added. The campaign will be headlined by a beautifully crafted video to air across free-to-air and catch-up television, digital video channels, social media and google channels in Canberra from May 29. This Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund is an initiative of the Commonwealth and NSW State Government.

T H E B AY PAV I L I O N S The official opening of the Bay Pavilions arts and aquatic centre marked the realisation of a long-awaited dream for the Batemans Bay community. With the fit-out and staff training completed, the centre opened to the public in early June. Bay Pavilions is a place of many experiences and will be the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s premier destination for arts, aquatics and leisure activities. The Pavilions is made up of two core destinations – the Arts Pavilion and the Aquatic Pavilion. The Arts Pavilion includes a theatre, bar, gallery and studios whilst the Aquatic Pavilion is home to a 25m lap pool, warm water pool, gym, water slides and splash park. The precinct will be serviced by the Black Duck Café, visitor centre services and a retail store. The recent formal official opening was held to celebrate the end of construction and was attended by special guests including politicians, user group representatives, community campaigners, former councillors, and Council staff. Aboriginal dance group Muladha Gamara kicked off the proceedings, welcoming everyone to Country and cleansing the site through a traditional smoking ceremony. After the speeches, Australian Government Senator Jim Molan, NSW Arts Minister Ben Franklin and Eurobodalla Mayor Mathew Hatcher cut the ceremonial ribbon, assisted by former Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes, Bega MP Dr Michael Holland, Gilmore MP Fiona Phillips, and former Bega MP Andrew Constance. Tributes to those instrumental in the project were too many to mention, however particular praise was paid to community advocates Jeannie Brewer and Carolyn Harding, as well as Mr Constance, Ms Innes, former Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis, NBRS Architecture, ADCO Constructions, and Council’s planning director Lindsay Usher.
R E X ’ S M A S S I V E E X PA N S I O N OF REGIONAL SERVICES As foreshadowed in earlier announcements, Rex hasunveiled a steep increase of its services to the major regional centres on its network. Rex’s General Manager of Network Strategy, Mr. Warrick Lodge, said, “Rex sees strong recovery in these regional centres and is dedicating considerable resources to meet this demand. These improved schedules will see us operating more flights on our regional network than pre-COVID and mark a significant turning point for the airline as we return to profitability.” “We are confident that FY23 will see a great improvement in the finan-
The opening of the new Bay Pavilions at Bateman’s Bay. Ms Harding, who campaigned for 20 years for an aquatic centre for Batemans Bay, said it was more than she ever could have imagined. “(Back then) we were expecting an extension of our old pool. We’ve got something bigger and better than any other aquatic centre I’ve ever been to,” she said. Guests toured the facility, a highlight of which was a piano performance in the Yuin Theatre and a talk on its state-of-the-art features from the theatre consultant who assisted with the design Richard Stewart. Today, we will need to add another one to the list of small regional cities suffering from the collateral damage of Qantas’ predatory actions. From June 27, Rex will be withdrawing from the Sydney to Cooma route which Qantas sees fit to want to enter even though this route had only 2,000 passengers in the last 12 months.” Route Increase in weekday services SYD – Albury 25%, SYD – Coffs Harbour 67%, SYD – Orange 33%, SYD – Merimbula/Moruya 15%, SYD – Wagga Wagga 67%, ADL – Port Lincoln 14%* on Fridays *Rex operates up to seven return flights per weekday; with Friday now increased to eight. Port of Eden welcomes return of cruise ships
The Port of Eden will see the return of cruise ships to the Sapphire Coast when the Coral Princess arrives at Eden Cruise Wharf on July 12 for a day visit. Cruise ships returning to Eden in July are among more than 40 different ships from 25 cruise lines scheduled to make more than 300 calls at port locations throughout NSW during the next financial year which is expected to generate billions of dollars for the State’s economy, and thousands of jobs. The cruise industry finally set sail again on May 31 following a twoyear Covid pandemic hiatus. NSW Transport Minister David Elliott said up to a million passengers are expected to cruise over the 2022/23 season. “Cruise is an economic powerhouse because its impacts are felt from the farm gate, through our freight and supply chains all the way to our tourism destinations – it generates
jobs far beyond the ship, boosts regional economies and supports farming communities.” Cruise Eden co-ordinator, Debbie Meers, said the visit by the Coral Princess in July comes with many firsts.
“It is the first winter ship to visit Eden, the first ship out of Brisbane to cruise this far south, first time the Eden Welcome Centre will be used to welcome the ships and the maiden voyage to Port of Eden by the Coral Princess. “The whole community is very excited to have the ships back,” Ms Meers said. “There will be cruise markets again and water cannons from tugs will welcome the ships.” Passengers not on booked tours can take shuttle buses into town to discover local retail shops and cafes. “We are looking forward to a fabulous season ahead and are very grateful to the cruise lines

REVITALISING EDEN HARBOUR PROGR AM The Revitalising Eden Harbour Program is coordinating the delivery of three major projects for the Port of Eden: the Eden Welcome Centre, the Safe Harbour Project and the Eden Harbourside Activation Project.
and Australian Government for the health measures in place to keep the industry, passengers and community safe.” The Eden cruise schedule for 2022 includes the Coral Princess (Princess Cruise Lines) berthing four times July 12, August 7, September 23 and October 10; Majestic Princess (Princess Cruise Lines) November 19; Star Breeze (Windstar Cruises) November 23; Westerdam (Holland America Line) on November 24; Pacific Adventure (P and O Cruises) December 4; Caledonian Sky (Noble Caledonia) on December 16; Le Laperouse (Ponant) on December 17; Norwegian Spirit (NCL Bahamas) on December 23 and Azamara Quest (V Ships Leisure Sam) on December 30. Note the schedule is a live document and is subject to updates as changes occur (see the Port Authority of NSW website or Cruise Eden website and Facebook page).
Port Authority of New South Wales leads the coordination of the Revitalising Eden Harbour Program (program) with the support of Transport for NSW (Safe Harbour Project) and the Department of Planning Industry and Environment (Eden Harbourside Activation Project). Consultation commenced in April to transform the Port of Eden into a destination of choice for some of the world’s largest cruise liners. Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott has encouraged the local community and interested groups to provide feedback on the detailed proposal to modify the Eden Cruise Wharf.
“We want to support local business and communities by better using the existing infrastructure at Eden to deliver greater economic opportunities for a region that has done it tough over the past few years – through drought, fires and the pandemic,” Mr Elliott said. The proposed modifications at Eden Cruise Wharf include: - an increase to the current limit of 60 vessels a year to visit the wharf and region; - allow vessels up to 370 metres long to berth (up from the current 325m), to accommodate some of the largest ships in the world carrying up to 6,700 passengers;
- allow vessels to stay at berth overnight 7 days a week, similar to the current infrastructure approval for vessels less than 100 metres (embarking/ disembarking passengers and general cruise ship activities would remain restricted to between 7:00am and 10:00pm); and - allow non-cruise ships greater than 100 metres in length to carry out operational activities, such as loading and unloading. Consultation with community groups and stakeholders will inform an environmental assessment report for assessment and consideration by planning authorities.
“The multi-award winning Eden Welcome Centre is the ocean gateway to the sparkling Sapphire Coast and beautiful Bega Valley and these upgrades would allow us to unlock the region’s full economic potential,” Mr Elliott said. “There has been growing demand from the cruise and shipping industries and the Royal Australian Navy to expand the use of existing facilities.

our inaugural festival and feel very privileged to be part of an incredibly welcoming and creative community, in such a unique setting.” The 2022 Wanderer Festival is being supported by the NSW Government Feel New South Wales tourism initiative, as well as Headspace Bega and ABC South East. Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade and Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said this was a significant boost for the region. “I am delighted the nation’s newest major cultural festival will be taking place in the beautiful NSW Sapphire Coast, one of the state’s most pristine regions,” Mr Ayres said.
“Wanderer Festival is going to attract thousands of visitors to one of Australia’s most inspiring destinations, providing a fantastic boost to the visitor economy of a region that has been badly impacted by successive years of natural disasters and COVID-19. “NSW is bouncing back to life and this is as much about putting smiles back on faces as it is about turbocharging our state’s visitor economy. Nothing does that more than a brand-new festival celebrating music and art with a strong line up of local and international talent. The Wanderer Festival will be held at 23 Kulbardi Cl, Bournda from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 September. Tickets can be purchased online at www.wanderer.com.au/tickets

Would you like to meet a potoroo? Potoroos are the smallest of our macropods, macropod meaning marsupial family of kangaroos, and they jump like a kangaroo too. Sometimes they just hide behind a tussock and peer out at you. Did you know they use their little hands to pick up their food? A potoroo’s favourite food is truffles of which there are hundreds of varieties in Australia. We need potoroos for a healthy forest because they spread the spores of the underground fungi which give the trees nourishment and some protection from disease. Their biggest threats are cats and foxes, however, they can survive in areas where dingos live because cats and foxes stay away from those areas, or get eaten. If you book an Encounter you can meet a potoroo at closer quarters. At Potoroo Palace you can meet an echidna and admire her long tongue while she feeds. Gentle emus wander the Park and will take a food pellet from your hand so gently that you barely feel it. Very casual kangaroos wander freely and would love to have a scratch on their necks under their chins. Usually the wombats sleep by day in their burrows, but you can book an encounter with Milly, our rather spoilt wombat, who was blinded by a car as an adult. She loves to play with a soccer ball or just to have a good stroke or a cuddle. If reptiles are your thing, you can book snake and lizard encounters too, or you can play with our resident Chough, ‘Chuff’, a very intelligent bird whose eyes will glow red with the excitement of greeting you with her wings outspread. Some resident birds like the Tawny
Frogmouths can be fed by hand and others who choose to visit, like the Wood Ducks or Pacific Black Ducks become very used to humans. Dear Bill, our Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, will greet you as you come into the Park and may dance for you if you sing to him. Cockatoos can live till they are 150 years old and so, sadly if they are pets, their owners may die before they do, and they are passed on to someone else. We have only native animals and almost every animal we have is a rescue or an unwanted pet. We do not like to cage any animal which can survive free, but many of the injured ones can have happy lives if well cared for. All our flying-foxes are rescues who are unable to fly because of injuries from barbed wire, loose fruit netting or electrocution. Each one has a story. Sparky was rescued in 1998 from electrocution. He is the patriarch and shows everyone how they should behave. All the ones who are rescued but who can recover enough to fly again are released. Flying-foxes are primates like us and are our nearest relative among the native animals. They are supposed to sleep during the day, but they are always curious to meet visitors who pass by. You may choose to have delicious coffee and food from our Blue Wren café where there are also locally made gifts for sale. Be sure to buy a ticket to go round the Park on our little train and you’ll be happy to know Educational Talks are free with your Park entry fee. Close Encounter with our animals may be booked separately. Our staff are young and passionate and love their job, so you can ask them questions as you explore the Park. We look forward to your visit. Grand Matriarch
G O L D AWA R D
There was plenty of excitement and a little disbelief when Coral Reynolds owner of Grand Matriarch Distilling Company discovered her Vodka had won a Gold Medal in the World Vodka Awards 2022. The Far South Coast based microdistillery produces delicious bespoke premium Vodka of which many local Vodka lovers can attest to – so taking out an international award has confirmed what they already knew. Grand Matriarch Distilling Company entered the Best New Launch category. It was the first and only awards Coral has entered and a category she really wanted to win. “I was stoked, it was really a lovely surprise that of all the entries from across the world, a microdistillery on the Far South Coast of New South Wales won this category.” Success at the awards means the title of Gold Medal winner can be added to the Vodka bottle labels. Coral also intends to display a certificate recognising the win at a new bar currently under construction at the rear of Eden’s newly restored Australasia Hotel. In addition to this exciting news there are a number of projects close to being finished which Coral is also looking forward to, including moving to a new purpose-built distillery in Wolumla. This will allow for a 400-litre still to be set up, in addition to the current 200-litre still, which will increase production. The larger space will also mean there will be room for more fermenting barrels. The distinctive one-litre and 500ml silver bottles which can be re-used as water bottles will soon have some company in the form of glass bottles (750ml plus small 30ml mini-bar bottles). Coral said the introduction of Vodka in glass bottles will increase the market making it more suited to the hospitality industry, including pubs and clubs. It will also allow Coral to diversify the product by creating a fruitinfused flavour range. Killer Whales sighted on the
Humpback Highway!
It’s not every day Orcas or Killer Whales are encountered on the Far South Coast, but sightings in the waters off Eden in April created plenty of excitement and interest.
With whale numbers increasing due to conservation efforts over recent years, the Sapphire Coast is establishing a growing reputation for close encounters during whale watching season as they travel along the “Humpback Highway” every year; but to observe Killer Whales close to shore is special. Those seen from April 21 to 23 were observed between Green Cape, south of Eden and Haycock Point, south of Pambula. Killer Whales Australia has confirmed three known Killer Whales from five sighting events over three days. The animals sighted were Bent Tip, EA_0060 and a yet to be catalogued but known female. Killer Whales Australia reported EA_0060 has been known to the catalogue since 2006 and has been sighted many times during this 16year period. Eden’s history is steeped in the tradition of the sea, and the most colourful era of this tradition is
that of shore-based whaling which began in 1828 until 1930. Secretary of Eden Killer Whale Museum, Jenny Drenkhahn, said Orcas are seen at sea by professional fishermen at various times throughout the year but as the Humpback whale migration occurs along this coastline it is only natural that Orcas (preying on Humpbacks and their calves) will be more prevalent close to the shore. “The legend of the “Killers of Eden” (a pod of Orcas that returned to the area each year) was that they had a habit of frequenting the coastline near Twofold Bay as that migration happened,” Ms Drenkhahn sai.
Working as a “pack” they would herd a whale into the bay and drive it onto a reef or a beach and eat the tongue and lips, a delicacy they appeared to enjoy. This left bountiful whale meat for the indigenous people living on the coastline who believed these were their ancestors re-incarnated and bringing them food. “These people revered the Orcas and celebrated on the shore when a whale was “brought to them,” Ms Drenkhahn added. “The Orcas reacted to this celebration and there was a definite connection between this pod of
Orcas and the people living here.” When Europeans settled in the area in the early 1800’s, whaling was being practiced worldwide as a source of oil. “There was a known source of Humpback whales on this coastline so whaling was practiced in season and the indigenous men were part of the whaleboat crew,” Ms Drenkhahn said. “This local pod of Orcas, one of which was Old Tom (many were named by the whale men and recognised each year as they returned) soon recognised that the whale men were hunting Humpback whales too and they began to cooperate with the men. “The Orcas would herd the Humpbacks into the bay, the men would chase and harpoon it; but unable to tow a dead whale with a row boat, they had to wait until it started to decompose, bloat and float, before they could tow it back to the whaling station and begin processing to extract the oil. “In this time after the harpooning the Orcas would eat the tongue and lips of the Humpback whale and this
began a symbiotic relationship between the Orcas and the whale men. “This is the only place in the world where this occurred,” Ms Drenkhahn said. Old Tom’s body was found floating in Twofold Bay on September 17, 1930 and a group of local men decided to preserve the skeleton and establish the Eden Killer Whale Museum. The skeleton is the only one on public display in the Southern Hemisphere. Exploring the Killer Whale Trail is a must for visitors to the area. It’s a trail rich with whales and tales of adventure, a self-drive tour that takes you to five historical sites set in breathtaking natural surrounds around Eden. Image courtesy Matthew Proctor. Go to the Sapphire Coast website www.sapphirecoast.com.au to learn more about uncovering this dramatic history of killer whales of Eden.

The July 23 Pambula MAD Winter Ball will be held in memory of Tracey Beasley, a much loved mum, community member and melanoma awareness warrior.
PambulaM A DWinter Ball
Following the success of its 2021 community event to promote melanoma awareness, the Pambula Business Chamber with support from the Pambula Rotary Club is busy organising the Pambula MAD Winter Ball in memory of Tracey Beasley on July 23. Tracey was a much loved community member and admired local single mum to Molly, Banjo and Toby. She was also a warrior with an infectious smile who always thought of others. Tracey worked tirelessly to promote melanoma awareness and advocate for prevention, and her dying wish was for the message of melanoma awareness to spread far and wide. “Our goal is to keep the candle alight for Tracey and honour her wish with our melanoma awareness events,” Louise Yeoman of the Pambula Business Chamber said. Tracey’s story began when she was 19 and went on an end of high school holiday to Bali where she got so badly burnt, she lost three layers of skin. She wanted to leave Bali with a tan because the other girls had such lovely skin and she wanted to be the same. She never got the tan, but she did end up with cancer. Tracey had a melanoma removed from her back in 2005 and ten years later, a tumour grew in her brain which was confirmed as a secondary melanoma. Unfortunately, after five years of many invasive brain surgeries, and with tumours on her lungs, Tracey Beasley took her last breath in June 2019. Tracey wished others could just accept themselves for the way they are, and not strive to be anything more. Tracey would say, “Love the skin you’re in, love your red hair, love your freckles and love your dimples because that’s what makes you who you are”. Tracey was passionate about prevention. She introduced brimmed sun safe hats into the local primary school and advocated the importance of wearing a good sunscreen. Before she died, Tracey was working towards starting up a shade sail campaign for future generations and promoted ‘prevention is better than cure’. One day, the Pambula MAD committee hope to raise enough funds

to purchase and erect shade sails over playgrounds in honour of Tracey.
Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world with one person being diagnosed every 30 minutes. It is estimated 1300 people will die from melanoma in Australia this year. It is the most common cancer for Australians 15 – 39 years old and the third most common cancer in Australia. “The main preventable cause of melanoma is overexposure to UV radiation. Melanoma doesn’t discriminate. Anybody at any age can get it,” Louise said. “We encourage everyone to know your skin, and have at least one skin check up every 12 months with their local GP or Skin Cancer Clinic. The good news is that if detected early, it can be effectively treated.” So why a Winter Ball to promote melanoma awareness? “Once winter arrives, people often forget that the sun is still shining and we should continue to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide,” Louise said. “Up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can filter through the thickest cloud cover. Fresh snow in particular is highly reflective of UV radiation causing sun damage to our skin.” The MAD Winter Ball will feature live music and auctions, and guests will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. A cocktail dress code will see guests glam up for the night, and canapés will be served while the crowd enjoys the soulful tunes of Sam Stevenson. Following the main meal, guests can then dance the night away to amazing live band, SALT. “Come and join us at Pambula’s Oaklands Event Centre on Saturday, July 23 for a night of glitter and entertainment,” Louise said. “We welcome you to follow our Facebook page ‘Pambula Melanoma Awareness Day in memory of Tracey Beasley’ for further information.” Tickets are $80 per seat or $750 for a table of 10, and are available through Trybooking.com or through the link on the Facebook page.

Capital to Coast R U N N I N G FE S T I VA L
After two years of being impacted by COVID, the annual Capital to Coast (C2C) event is returning for 2022 to the delight of runners across the ACT and South Coast. Founded by the Nowra Athletics Club in 2012, the event has been owned and organised by Canberra Runners since 2019 and sees runners travelling from Canberra to the Coast in a two-day, multistage event. “Imagine combining a multistage trail running race with a festival atmosphere and a weekend away down the coast with your friends and family. That’s Capital to Coast in a nutshell,” Race Director Doug Richards said.
The 100-kilometre race is broken into stages of eight to 15 kilometres with different start and finish locations on the way to the coast. Runners can participate as solo runners, completing all nine stages, or as members of relay teams of up to four runners. Relay teams can allocate stages between team members at their own discretion. The commencement of each stage is organised as a mass start of all runners competing in the stage. Runner and relay team times for the event are calculated as the sum of the elapsed time for each stage of the event. The event will kick off at Molonglo from 3pm on Friday 27 May and an event guide, as well as information on how to get involved can be found on the Capital to Coast website at www.capitaltocoast.com.au. “We look forward to bringing the event back to the region and showcasing the region’s hidden gems to the trail running community,” Mr Richards said.
“The event is designed by runners for runners and combines our love of trail running and the special connection between Canberra and the South Coast.” This year’s race will start at Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra and will finish two days later at Cookies beach in South Darras. In between, the event travels through some of the region’s most beautiful national parks and towns.
“The region has an amazing history, and the event provides participants the opportunity to take the time to immerse themselves in everything the region has to offer. This is what Capital to Coast is all about, combining the joy of trail running with our desire to connect and support each other and our communities.”

oystertrail opened The words oysters and Sapphire Coast have become inextricably entwined as the award-winning, uniquely flavoured oysters evoke the essence of the pristine Sapphire Coast environment. Those who appreciate both oysters and the Sapphire Coast region will be delighted to learn of the Sapphire Coast Oyster Merroir Trail, officially launched at the Merimbula Visitor Information Centre in June. The event also included the unveiling of the new Sapphire Coast Wilderness Oyster installation at the Centre. Guests were served oysters and canapes from Wheeler’s Restaurant, beers by Longstocking Brewery and Oyster Shell Gin by North of Eden as they celebrated and recognised the oyster industry’s important connection to the region’s tourism. Anthony Osborne of Sapphire Coast Destination Marketing said the Sapphire Coast Oyster Trail marketing program is designed to highlight the amazing and unique Sydney Rock Oyster story and oyster-related tourism experiences. “The trail is designed to encourage overnight visitation, and importantly the dispersal of visitors across the whole Sapphire Coast region, linking visitor experience and industry.” Merimbula Visitor Information Centre manager, Chris Nicholls, explained the trail as being “a union of oyster providores industry and adventure tour operators”.
“It’s mutually beneficial as everyone gains something from it.” The Sapphire Coast is home to Australia’s wilderness oysters, with millions harvested from five key estuaries each year – from Wonboyn in the south to Wapengo in the north. The oyster farm gate road trip encompasses Wonboyn Rock Oysters (Wonboyn Lake), Broadwater Oysters (Pambula Lake), Wheeler’s Oysters (Merimbula Lake), Tathra Oysters (Nelson Lagoon) and Wapengo Lake (Wapengo Lake)/Bermagui River.
Guests enjoyed a range of oysters from local growers at the official launch of the Sapphire Coast Oyster Trail held at Merimbula Visitor Information Centre.
Speaking at the official launch Mr Osborne said the oyster trail video produced as part of the promotion is about “really rich and beautiful content”. The marketing package features many ways to experience the oyster trail from oyster platters with beer paddles; kayaking tours; oyster cruises and oyster bars to meeting growers at the farm gate. It also contains a directory and individual producers’ profile which is woven into the complete oyster trail experience. “It’s about connecting people to place,” Mr Osborne said. The Sapphire Coast Oyster Trail is an Australian Government Bushfire Recovery Initiative. You can further explore the Oyster Trail by visiting: www.sapphirecoast.com.au/oysters

Jazz Festival
CELEB R AT E S 4 0 Y E A R S
Toes were tapping and fingers were clicking as one of the best events on the Far South Coast celebrated a significant milestone. The 40th Merimbula Jazz Festival had the town buzzing across the June Long Weekend as thousands converged to listen to some of the finest jazz music on offer. After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, Jazz Festival organisers were thrilled to be celebrating four decades of bringing live music to Merimbula. The popular street parade saw hundreds line the CBD, cheering on performers, Jazz Festival volunteers, and community groups who proudly marched their way along Merimbula Drive before finishing in Beach Street. This year’s Jazz Festival attracted bands and performers from across the country who brought their sounds to the streets and venues of Merimbula.
How the Merimbula Jazz Festival started It was during an impromptu Sunday afternoon gig in 1980 at Stan Delle Vergin’s home on the Fishpen at Merimbula that the notion of a local Jazz Festival was mooted. The Gipps Dance Band were in town and were relaxing on the Sunday after playing for a Ball the previous night and Stan had invited the fledgling Down South Jazz Band to attend a casual blow that day back in 1980. Local musos Barry Pascoe, John Cursley, and John Moffatt along with Stan agreed the idea was worth following up and those four became the organising Committee for the first Merimbula Jazz Festival held in June 1981. Barry Pascoe is recognised as the founding father and was the driving force. He had played trombone in the Abbey Jazz Band and had been on the Australian jazz scene for many years before settling at Bega where he was the Hospital’s Medical Superintendent. It was Barry who insisted the effort be made and urged the others to go along a path that put the first Festival in place on June 5,6,7 and 8 in 1981. Sadly, Barry passed away in 2001.

inspiration in it. I love mountains, seascapes, and everything in between.
Byron’s interest in photography began at an early age, passed on by his father who owned analog cameras, always took photos and filled tons of photo albums.
“With my photos I aim to share my experiences and inspire others. I want people to feel the connection with a place through my photos. What inspires me to take photos is actually to inspire others to get outside and explore.”
Byron said his childhood environment provided the perfect location for his developing passion. “Growing up near Byron Bay we were spoiled for choice with incredible landscapes and we also went on some amazing camping trips around Australia together. We still love looking back at these memories. “I also took a class in high school but never thought I could make a career out of it, it was just a hobby. “In 2009 I bought my first camera, a Canon 600D and eventually, all I could think about was taking photos until I started my photography business in 2017. “It’s been growing ever since and I am grateful I’ve been able to work with amazing clients all over Australia and New Zealand.” Byron is passionate about helping his clients to create the best images they need to stand out in their industry – and can combine telling their story with his eye for detail and view through the camera lens. “I love everything about photography. It is just a beautiful way to capture moments in a single image. “As a photographer I am inspired by many things, sometimes it is the fog settling over the valleys or climbing a mountain to capture the sunset. Nature is definitely playing a big part in my photography journey and I find a lot of
Travel and time of day also play a major part in Byron’s photographic creativity. “I love travelling to old and new places with my camera, documenting and sharing the beauty of the natural world. “My favourite subject to photograph is golden hour, it is the time shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light gets softer and you can find all sorts of colours in the sky. I love to play with the light and how it changes landscapes and objects. “Another favourite subject is astrophotography. I always try to incorporate golden hour and astro into my commercial shoots, which soon became my signature shots. I had people specifically ask me to shoot their cabin with the milky way or take wedding photos because of my golden hour photos.” Autumn and winter are definitely his favourite seasons. Most days Byron will be shooting at golden hour, which means rugging up and embracing the cold to get the best shots. “I always have to pack my beanie, lens warmer and gloves. These seasons have the most beautiful colours, not only in nature when the leaves change their colour but also the sky. The colours in the mornings and evenings are stronger and more vivid.
“Going camping is a bit more difficult in the colder seasons but so worth it - I just bring hot water bottles and hot chocolates to keep my partner happy. “Winter is also the perfect season for astrophotography because the sky is clearer and you get a better view of the Milky Way.” Shooting astrophotography involves setting your alarm for odd hours in the night, checking the weather forecast, planning on where the Milky Way will rise and the position from where you will take the photo. Byron recalls many nights of freezing hands, even with gloves, trying to get “the shot”. “One night I prepared a lot to get the right shot of our house with the Milky Way rising just behind it. I set up my camera, went to bed and got up only to find my lens had fogged up. “I think you can imagine how frustrated I was! For all astrophotography lovers out there: lens warmers are a must!” Byron offers clients: Commercial photography; Brand and Business photography; Content Creation/Social media management; Photo editing; Product photography; Drone photography and Travel photography. In the not too distant future he hopes to realise a “passion project” to support NGOs in Africa and Asia, to help them share their work and vision with the world. through the complexities of life, work and family. We saw her potential immediately and couldn’t wait to make her happy again!
Owner Karen is a busy mum of four who loves to breathe new life into old things. So, after an extensive renovation, Ocean Echoes is now available to book, stay and create beautiful memories in. Situated between Surf and Wimbie Beaches, it is also a short walk for supplies at the Surf Beach local IGA, pharmacy and bottleshop. As a big family, Karen and her husband Harry were looking at holiday options that didn’t involve the huge cost of plane tickets. “When we first walked into the house, it just seemed to me, to be a sad, forgotten soul. We discovered it was the victim of a nasty divorce and had been a summer getaway, left neglected
“We slept in sleeping bags on the floor, BYO camping chair a must! Pizza nights and chip sandwiches at the beach. A lot of love and laughs. Over the time I realised that I wanted to share what we’d found with other families out there struggling to afford the getaways, as well as the logistics of big-family living! So, we give you Ocean Echoes. “We love big families, because we are one and we love it when we go somewhere that can handle our size! As far as a friends get together goes – we’ve got you guys covered as well. Grab the girls and head on over, there is so much to do with and without kids in the Eurobodalla area. Wineries, bushwalks, scuba diving, seaplanes, cafes…. did I mention wine? Don’t just arrive, let me help you set up your weekend with things to do! We hope you love staying here as much as we do when we get the chance and can’t wait to have you back!” For more information, head to oceanechoes.com.au and get in touch with Karen to organise your next beach holiday.

NEW
roadmap
FOR NSW SEAFOOD SECTOR The NSW Government has announced a new strategic roadmap that will strengthen the commercial fishing sector over the next three years. Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said he has engaged the Commercial Fishing NSW Advisory Council (CommFish NSW) to work hand in hand with industry to develop the sustainable seafood strategy. “The new plan will drive productivity, remove out-of-date regulations, promote innovation and strengthen the industry as a whole,” Mr Saunders said. “We want to restore confidence and certainty for the sector, while also addressing longer-term challenges, after significant COVID-19 disruptions, bushfires and floods.” CommFish NSW will seek advice from commercial fishers to get their input on several priority areas, including: • • •
30
Regulatory reform; Improved business systems, such as a digital trading platform and electronic data collection; Seafood product innovation and promotional grants to boost consumption and value;
YOUR COASTAL LIFE
• •
Ways to increase industry engagement; and Harvest strategies to provide more certainty for the future.
“The NSW Government is committed to removing impediments to the industry, and this roadmap will ensure we continue to streamline operations to help our hardworking commercial fishers boost their profits,” Mr Saunders said. “The fishing sector is vital to maintain the economic, social and cultural richness of regional communities right up and down the NSW coast.” The NSW Government will also support the ongoing rollout of harvest strategies to establish agreed management frameworks for key stocks, starting with the release of the NSW Trawl Whiting and Lobster Fishery harvest strategies. “Harvest strategies help give commercial, recreational and Aboriginal cultural fishers greater certainty about how our fisheries will be maintained moving forward,” Mr Saunders said. “The NSW Lobster Strategy, for example, establishes management objectives and rules for changes in harvest levels to help ensure the species is in stock for years to come.” These plans also set the stage for a future of improved collaboration and transparency in fisheries management decisions. Work is currently underway to develop additional harvest strategies for Spanner Crab and Mulloway, with more key species to follow later this year. For more information regarding harvest strategies, please visit the DPI website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/harvest-strategies.
AU S T R A L I A’ S OY S T E R COA ST WINS CHAMPION OY S T E R AT S Y D N E Y R OYA L E A S T E R S H O W The Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales has named Australia’s Oyster Coast the 2022 Sydney Rock Oyster Champion at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, a national competition setting the benchmark for Australia’s fine food producers. The oyster business won the prestigious Champion Sydney Rock Oyster trophy for its Appellation Oysters Merimbula Bistro as well as multiple medals including two coveted gold medals (90+ points) for its bistro sized Appellation Oysters from Merimbula and Wapengo on the NSW South Coast. Sydney Royal Chair of Judges John Susman said the Fine Food competitions encourage and reward excellence by benchmarking produce in a transparent and objective manner with 60 percent of the marks in the Sydney Rock Oyster class awarded for taste and flavour and the remaining 40 percent for visual appearance. The 2022 judging panel consisted of 15 industry experts including notable Australian chefs Sean Connolly, Josh Niland and Richard Purdue, with a training program for the judges modelled from the Sydney Royal Wine Show. “There was unanimous consensus amongst the

judging panel regarding the successful oyster champion,” Mr Susman said of the Appellation Oysters Merimbula Bistro that took home the coveted trophy. “To be able to produce that quality of oyster given the growing conditions this year is a testament to the business. Australia’s Oyster Coast should be supremely proud of what it has achieved,” said Mr Susman. Australia’s Oyster Coast Chief Executive Officer Devin Watson said the incredible result is a credit to the passion and hard work from the company’s teams, especially given the difficulties of recent natural disasters, meaning less than ideal growing conditions in some estuaries that the company farms. “The 2022 results show that we can produce a high quality and consistent product despite the challenges we face as oyster farmers. Our Merimbula and Wapengo teams nailed the quality and should be very proud,” said Mr Watson. The Sydney Royal Fine Food Show point-based system awards gold, silver and bronze medals to those that receive over a benchmark score, with the gold medal recipients in each class re-judged to identify each Champion product winner.

of the Bay
The 2022 Lazer Rally of the Bay will be going ahead on August 13, featuring some of Australia’s best rally cars and drivers.
The Rally is a round of the NSW Rally championships and also forms part of the East Coast Classic Rally Series, NSW Clubman Rally Series, Hyundai Rally Series and the ACT Regional Rally Series. The 2022 event will take place in the forests surrounding Batemans Bay on the NSW South Coast. The event is organised and hosted by the North Shore Sporting Car Club (NSSCC). Sporting more than 500 members, the NSCC are responsible for organising 10 events per year, covering dirt, tarmac and other timed rally events. The 2022 Rally is currently in the planning stage and will this year feature two events, The Bay Stages and Bay Ramble. Due to some of the extreme weather experienced in the region and across the state over the past 12 months, some of the traditional roads that are used for the event are not in fit condition to be used. Due to the road selection, the Bay Meander will not be held this year, but the NSSCC team have been hard at work out in the forest scouting for new roads and are confident that fans and competitors alike will enjoy what’s on offer. The 2022 Lazer Rally of the Bay will be held at Batemans Bay on August 13 and more info will be made available as the event draws near. To find out more, visit the website at www.rallyofthebay.com.au

“Community consultation on the detailed planning documents for the construction of the Narooma wharf is underway and I encourage everyone in the local and broader communities to provide their feedback,” Mr Elliott said. “This is an important part of the planning process and gives local residents and businesses the opportunity to help shape the final outcome by providing information about specific needs of their community. “Narooma wharf is currently used by tour boat operators, commercial fishing vessels, tourists and the local community. Providing a new modern first class maritime
OLLAR WHARF PROJECT facility helps local businesses, tourism, and economic growth by continuing to attract boating and watercraft enthusiasts to the area,” Mr Elliott said. Eden’s Resilient Community
celebrated!
More than 1000 people celebrated Eden’s Resilient Community at an event held on June 5 to remember, recognise and reflect on all those involved in the 2019-20 Black Summer Bushfires.
The day was appropriately held at Eden Wharf a place of sanctuary for many Eden residents during the bushfires with many sheltering at the wharf and even onboard tug boats.
Local volunteer group Eden Service and Social Club Inc was kept very busy at their sausage sizzle throughout the day as 400 sausages, 100 onions and 47 loaves of bread were consumed!
Supported by a community recovery grant from Bega Valley Shire Council the day’s activities included opening tug boats to the public, and vehicles and equipment displays from the various agencies involved with the fire fighting efforts. Local community groups also set up information stalls on community projects such as Eden Canoes and Eden Trails, and the Eden Community Access Centre provided activities for kids including banner painting and play dough. The Kameruka Bush Orchestra played sea shanties throughout the event, bringing members of the crowd to their feet dancing and clapping along. “All in all, it was a fantastic day with a great atmosphere,” Eden Visitor Information Centre manager Clair Mudaliar said.

Race Day
The Moruya Jockey Club is hosting its second ever Tradies Race Day on Friday July 1. After last year’s successful event, the club are looking forward to once again welcoming tradies and their friends and family through the gates for a special race day. Tradies can get in the gate for free, all they need to do is show their White Card. All others can buy their ticket for $10 as they come through the gate, which opens at 11am.
Marquees can be booked for $125 each, and there are corporate packages available. Well supported by the community, there are more than 200 sponsors on board for the event, providing great prizes for the fashions and the races.
There will be eight races on the day, kicking off at noon. If you enjoy having a little flutter, at least seven bookies with be there to take your bets.
The Tradies Race Day came about after it was suggested to the Moruya Jockey Club by some local businesses, Swan Plumbing, Mitre 10, Cameron’s H Hardware and TLE Electrical. With last year’s event held on a Thursday, the Moruya Jockey Club has taken the advice of tradies and changed this year to a Friday, which will make it bigger and better.
Fashions on the Field will be held, including a special category for the Best Dressed Tradie, with fluros encouraged.
If you love a race day, this is one not to miss. Grab some mates and head down to the Moruya Racecourse for a cracking Friday afternoon.
A fully stocked bar will be in operation as well as pizza and a donut and coffee van, something all tradies will appreciate.
For more information, head to the Moruya Jockey Club Facebook page.

COAST HIRE EVENTS Outdoor event and function hire options on the Far South Coast and Snowy Mountains have become more readily available and practical thanks to the professional service provided by Coast Hire Events. Husband and wife Jamie and Jenna Alcock and brother Damien Alcock purchased Coast Hire in April 2019 and since then there has been plenty of growth and change. The team’s efforts have already been recognised after being named the Bega Chamber of Commerce and Industry Outstanding Customer Service Awards 2021 – Trades and Services winner. More recently Jenna as events manager has received notification Coast Hire is a finalist in the Shoalhaven and South Coast Wedding Industry Awards 2022 for Event Hire (winners to be announced on July 5). These Wedding Industry Awards™ celebrate and recognise the pinnacle of professionalism and the surpassing of all expectations of newlyweds. Jenna is excited about the future of the events side of the Bega-based hire business which has recently expanded following the purchase in November 2020 of local business Evoke Style & Hire. Coast Hire Events caters for corporate functions, weddings, festivals, birthday parties, school camps or any social gatherings.
arrival of the Hampton’s Style peg and pole marquee in September to expand the range of marquees available.
Why not let Jenna, Jamie and Damien and the Coast Hire team take the stress out of your next event. The equipment available caters for both large and small gatherings and covers anything from the biggest marquee which seats up to 180 to providing a cool room to audio and heating devices.
The 205 square metre marquee featuring three centre poles with the centre peak reaching six metres high and seats 180 people at long tables or 80-140 people at round tables is expected to be a popular choice, especially for weddings.
Categories include Accessories, Catering, Ceremony Packages, Cooking and Serving, Cooling, Crockery, Cutlery, Linen, Chair Covers and Sashes, Marquee, Reception Packages, Temporary Fencing, Toilets, Furniture, Glamping Tents, Glassware, Heating, Jars and Vases and Lighting.
This classy Ferrari Champagne Hampton marquee will arrive in time for the 2022-2023 wedding season, which traditionally runs from September to April.
Ceremonies, such as a wedding, are a specialty. Clients have the choice of leaving the Coast Hire team to set up the venue or they may decide on the do-it-yourself approach – it’s totally up to them.
Another favourite marquee option from Coast Hire Events is the Clipframe 10m x 20m Marquee, plus there is a beautiful timber floor (direct from Germany) to take your marquee reception to the next level!
Clients can be as creative as they want when it comes to creating the perfect reception as styling their own function room means they have control of their own catering options, how many on the guest list, no time restrictions and of course, location.
In February 2022, after a delay due to Covid-19 and events being cancelled or rescheduled, fullystyled glamping tents also became part of the Coast Hire Events.
Farms are increasingly popular locations for functions such as weddings and parties and are large enough to set up the biggest of marquees.
The glamping tests are popular accommodation for a girls’ weekend or wedding night accommodation for the bride and groom and their wedding guests.

encompasses site visits, to check the suitability of the location and advise on tent/ marquee or other desired hire equipment.
