WELCOME

Welcome one and all, I would like to welcome you all to the beautiful Snowy Monaro for the 70th Land Rover anniversary. It shapes as an incredible five days with thousands flocking to the region to celebrate the iconic Land Rover. For new visitors to the region, I extend an extra warm welcome to you and I hope you immerse yourself in the delights of our region. Cooma will be the centre for the majority of the Land Rover celebrations with the Cooma Car Club and Showground hosting an exciting range of activities. There will be Land Rover exhibits, terrapod displays, a swap meet and tours across our spectacular region. When in Cooma I encourage you to take in its rich history, learn about the Snowy Mountains Scheme and enjoy the delights of our multicultural heritage. The Land Rover holds a special place in the engineering marvel that is the Snowy Scheme. Often used as the vehicle of choice, the Land Rover was a reliable and trusted mode of transport for the scheme’s workforce. I am particularly looking forward to the Shannon’s 70th Grand Parade through Cooma. Hundreds of Land Rovers will make their way along Sharp Street in what will be a spectacular display. On behalf of Snowy Monaro Regional Council, I would like to congratulate the Land Rover working party for their efforts in putting this wonderful event on. The influx of visitors will provide a major boost to our local economy and generate plenty of interest in the Snowy Monaro. I hope you enjoy your time and I look forward to you coming back to visit. Enjoy the weekend. Happy and safe driving.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor John Rooney.

The Land Rover Club of the Australian Capital Territory (LRC ACT) is a family-oriented social and recreational club established in 1969 by a group of Land Rover enthusiasts. Nowadays, the club welcomes owners of all makes of four wheel drive vehicles, not only Land Rovers. We have about 120 members. The club’s aim is to promote safe and responsible four wheel driving, consistent with the code of ethics and principles endorsed by the Australian National Four Wheel Drive Council (ANFWDC), as well as respect for the Australian environment and its cultural heritage. The LRC is affiliated with the Council of ACT Motor Clubs Inc. and NSW-ACT 4WD Association. Club members participate in various day, weekend and extended trips, as well as social and community activities. The club serves as a friendly forum for the exchange

of knowledge and experience related to four wheel driving. Improving driver skills through formal training, along with associated activities such as map reading, navigation, bushcraft and the correct use of 4WD recovery equipment, underpins club activities. We support a number of charities that are aligned to our core activity. Our core activity is four wheel drive trips which vary from one day or weekend adventures in the local region to journeys of some weeks’ duration to places such as Central Australia, the Simpson Desert, Cape York and the Kimberley. All Club trips are conducted over existing roads and tracks, and are organised to avoid potentially dangerous situations and to take account of prevailing weather and track conditions. Trips cater for the novice through to the experienced driver and we encourage family involvement in all club activities. To complement the four wheel

drive trip interests of club members, the LRC also has an enthusiastic group of members that have a strong interest in Land Rovers of the past with Series 1, 2 and 3 all represented, along with more unusual or rare vehicles. The club caters for these vehicles by running regular trips, including to regional and remote parts of Australia largely in the Eastern States. LRC Land Rovers will also appear at events such as the Canberra Show and field days at a number of nearby towns. With the growing resurgence of the Land Rover marque and the popularity of four wheel drive touring, the club is adapting to the needs of the Land Rover owner of the 21st Century.

Half-a-century on and it’s

Happy 50th Birthday Land Rover! ...Watching the long procession of Land Rovers through Cooma that day was a reminder that the famous Henry Ford slogan for his nifty Model T: You can have any colour, s’long as it’s black! must have been paraphrased by the bean counters at Land Rover when they choose...

The above and following extract is from the BUSHDRIVER magazine regarding the 50th birthday celebrations. The article was written by Theo Benet, images by Solange De Armas. To read the full article head to: remlr. com/forum/index. php?topic=3483.0

Images and text from Practical motoring: practicalmotoring. com.au/4x4/flashback-land-rovers-60th-annniversary-australia-cooma-2008/

Land Rover’s 60th Anniversary in Australia, Cooma, 2008 The Land Rover was born as a stop-gap, so the Rover Car company could never have known that a lifetime later on thousands of enthusiasts would converge on the small NSW town of Cooma to celebrate the marque.

We look back on Australia’s largest gathering of Land Rovers…. FOR MOST OF 2007 the Land Rover community had been asking each other “Are you going to Cooma?” and for 1374 of them driving 767 vehicles, the answer was yes, of course. How could you pass up the chance to see just about one of every Land Rover made or modified, catch up with old friends, meet new ones, finally put a face to those forum names, garner ideas aplenty or relax in the company of like-minded enthusiasts? And Land Rover owners do tend to be enthusiasts. It’s almost poor form to own just the one, and if every owner had brought every Landie they owned then there would be more like 5000 cars. Chatting to people over dinner, we asked which Land Rover they had brought and how many they owned. A typical response: “Ah, I came up in the Series 1. Wife drove the 110. Umm, yes we’ve got a twodoor Rangie too. Plus an early 90.” Wife “And all the other early ones!” “Oh I forgot, we’ve got a 2a running now. And a few Series 1s as well. Some need a bit of restoring.” Wife “A bit. A bit!”

23 Everything began on Friday with registration, followed by a motorkhana and various trips on the Saturday, finishing with a family BBQ for 900 hungry people in the evening. Sunday was the Big Day, with 560 Land Rovers lining up on a runway in order of model age, an assembly that took nearly three hours. Then the Grand Parade where all the cars drove through Cooma to the Showgrounds, for the general display and judging of various awards. The prizes were presented later that evening at the gala dinner, and notably Best P38A Range Rover was won by Ron Beckett, better known to many as p38arover from the AURLO forums. The guest speakers were Land Rover luminaries, starting with then-LRA Managing Director Roger Jory who explained that Land Rovers built the roads for other 4WDs to travel on, said he hoped the LRX would be a part of the future [ that vehicle became the Evoque] , and noted that China is now a larger market for Land Rover than Australia, having started only a few years ago.

He was followed by Graham Jones, then Richard Asquith, and Bill Baker, each of whom had their own anecdotes to relate. Bill wasn’t worried about the impending sale of Land Rover to Tata, having been with the company through ownership by the British Government, British Aerospace, BMW and Ford. Interestingly, he had borrowed a new TDV8 Vogue in Sydney and not realised it was diesel till he arrived in Cooma. Perhaps that experience played a part in his prediction that the USA was going to swing towards diesel as increased petrol prices began to bite. Monday was a day to pack up the tent and the memories, then begin the journey home. As we wafted in our loan Range Rover Sport back to Melbourne through the Snowy, we found Land Rovers around every corner. Maybe that’s what it was like all those years ago when Land Rovers helped build the Snowy, just one achievement in sixty proud years.

Snowy Land Rovers If one car can claim to have tamed and opened up The Snowy Mountains, it is the Land Rover. It was good timing that the launch of Australia’s largest ever engineering project, at the alpine township of Adaminaby on a cold and windy morning on 17 October 1949, was a little over a year after the launch of the Land Rover. The hydro-electric scheme was to be built in some of Australia’s most rugged and inaccessible country, where there were few rough tracks and even fewer made roads. The first surveys were carried out on horseback, but the sheer distances involved meant motorised transport would be required as soon as possible. Initially, the SMA used war surplus Willys Jeeps which, although capable and able to meet many of the requirements, were found to be fragile in the extreme conditions of the Snowy Mountains. The first Land Rovers arrived in the Cooma area, supplied via the local dealership P.D. Murphy to a couple of farmers, in early 1949. Not surprisingly, Bill Hudson, the SMA Commissioner, got to know some of these farmers, who bestowed the virtues of the Land Rover to him. Hudson ordered an immediate trial of the Land Rover for Snowy surveyors and engineers. The first three of these arrived in The Snowy on 16 November – only one month after the Scheme’s official start – and were allocated to surveyors. Between 1950 and 1952 some 96 Land Rovers were in use on the Scheme.

Backbone of the Fleet

The vehicles were extremely successful and quickly became the backbone of the Snowy Mountains transport fleet, being used by every department, from engineers and hydrologists to the pay clerks and medical officers.

In 1953 alone a further 132 Land Rovers were purchased, according to the sales records of Grenville Motors, which thankfully have survived. Grenville Motors, a division of Larke, Neave & Carter, was the NSW master distributor for Rover cars, and supplied all the Land Rovers to the SMA, through their entire time on the Scheme. Many Land Rovers were assembled or partly assembled by Grenville Motors, from Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits as well as other interstate master distributors, but as build quality varied from state to state, Rover (UK) contracted Pressed Metal Corporation (see next issue), another LNC company, to assemble CKD Land Rovers from late 1956 or early 1957. By 1958, The Snowy maintained around 300 Land Rovers, representing by far the largest single make of vehicle on its nearly 1,000-vehicle fleet, most of which were locally assembled. Bert Knowles worked on The Snowy as officer-in-charge of the main workshops in Cooma. Writing in Noel Gough’s tome, Mud Sweat and Snow, Knowles, who had worked in Rover’s Experimental Department during the development of the Land Rover, said; “The total number of Land Rovers purchased by the Authority from November 1949 to December 1966 was 715 vehicles. The total number of Land Rovers operating in the Authority’s fleet at any one time was over 300, which by any standard is large and they certainly played a very important part in the development and construction of the Snowy Mountains scheme.” Originally, all were 80” basic versions with full-length canvas hoods, but as longer wheelbase versions and metal hard-top canopies became available a wide range of models was bought. Copied from the BMC Experience Magazine Issue 17.

Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria The Club is essentially a four-wheel drive club, with emphasis on family participation. The main activity of the Club is four wheel drive touring trips involving day, weekend, long weekend or long distance trips of several weeks duration. Most trips are within Victoria, however all States have been visited at one time or another. Many other types of events are held; these include monthly General Meetings, social outings, in-the-field and technical demonstrations, motorkhanas, navigation exercises, visits to places of interest, active participation in community ser-

vice events. All of these are given further explanation in this book. The total number of events average around 70 per year. ‘Coming Events’ are given notice on the Web Site and in the Club magazine called the ‘Review’, including a detailed account, as well as, being listed in the ‘Coming Events Calendar’ and are discussed at General meetings. There is usually one to two months notice given, giving plenty of time to seek participation and to plan for the event. The Event Organiser or Trip Leader is the person to contact regarding this.

The Jaguar Land Rover Observation Trial Do you want a new Land Rover for a week? Try the JLRA Observation Trial. This is a trip with a difference! Take this self-guided tour along a picturesque route in the beautiful countryside surrounding Cooma.

Pick up your information pack from the Range Rover Club stand and follow the detailed directions. Along the way, answer questions about what you see and record your distance driven. Complete the answer pages and submit when you return to the Showground. The route of the JLRA Observation Trial will take about three hours to complete over a combination of paved and gravel roads. For this activity, each vehicle should have a team of a driver and at least one observer and start with enough fuel for 200 kilometres. You can do the JLRA Observation Trial at any time over the weekend (but you must have your answers in before the cutoff time). One entry per vehicle. Answer sheets will be marked and the vehicle team with the most correct answers (as determined by our judges) will be declared the JLRA Observation Trial winner. The winner will receive a fantastic prize, the use of a new Land Rover for a Week, courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover Australia. The winner will be announced and the prize presented at the Gala Dinner. The JLRA Observation Trial is open to all Land Rover vehicles of registered Land Rover 70th Anniversary event attendees. This is not a timed trial or race.

History..

Mt Gladstone

To really appreciate the vast Monaro and Snowy Mountains a visit to the Mt Gladstone lookout is a must. Located only 3.5km west of Cooma, the lookout offers unsurpassed views of the Monaro Plains, the extinct volcanos called ‘The Brothers’ and the Snowy Mountains. There are two easily accessible lookout platforms. Picnic and toilet facilities are also available.

Before European settlement Aboriginal people lived on the Monaro Plains for more than 20,000 years. The main group was the Ngarigo who moved in and out of the region according to the seasons. In 1827, cattle were brought from Sydney and the area quickly became popular with settlers. The village of Cooma was surveyed in 1849. Discovery of Gold in the 1860s at Kiandra brought about a permanent increase in Cooma’s population and the railway opened in 1889. Cooma was booming and prosperous and by 1900 the town boasted its “Regional Capital” status with many grand official buildings. The start of the Snowy Scheme in 1949 changed the character of Cooma dramatically with the influx of many thousands of workers from post war Europe. These influences have made Cooma a town with a rich culture.
