Brumby Bill

gives hope to brumby campaigners

The iconic Snowy Mountain Brumby, a feature of the mountains landscape for more than 200 years, is the subject of a new NSW Government Bill which will confer recognition of its heritage value. The Bill is set for its second reading, having been introduced into Parliament on May 23. The Bill was announced in by the Deputy Premier of NSW, John Barilaro, at Three Mile Dam, on May 20. Interested observers included a mob of Kiandra Greys – brumbies which call that section of Kosciuszko National Park home. The Bill will over-ride the Draft Wild Horse Management Paln which proposed culling 90 percent of the brumbies. Mr Barilaro said the new laws will finally end years of speculation around the culling of one of Australia’s national icons. “Wild brumbies have been roaming the Australian alps for almost 200 years and are part of the cultural fabric and folklore of the high country,” Mr Barilaro said. “Next week the Minister for the Environment and I will introduce a Bill into the NSW Parliament that will recognise the heritage value of the brumby in Kosciuszko National Park and set a framework for protecting it,” he said. Dubbed the ‘Brumbies Bill’, the new laws will require the Minister for the Environment to prepare a heritage management plan for the brumby, which will identify areas within the Kosciuszko National Park where populations will be maintained, and set rules around brumby management. “The heritage management plan will specifically prohibit lethal culling of the brumby, aerial or otherwise, and will identify those areas in the park where brumbies can roam without causing significant environmental harm,” Mr Barilaro said. “If brumbies are found in highly-sensitive alpine areas of Kosciuszko National Park, resources will be allocated towards relocation first, followed by rehoming, should population numbers grow too high.

“I have always opposed cruel forms of culling and have advocated for non-lethal ways of managing brumby numbers. “Kosciuszko National Park exists to protect the unique environment of the Snowy Mountains, and that unique environment includes wild brumbies,” he said. The legislation will also require all future plans of management for Kosciuszko National Park to recognise the cultural significance of the brumby. Other changes to be made to the management of brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park will include: • The establishment of a Wild Horse Community Advisory Panel to advise the Minister of appropriate management approaches for the brumby; • A research and monitoring program that scientifically informs future wild horse management plans; • A brumby count to gain a more accurate assessment of brumby numbers and where they range; and • A marketing campaign to promote re-homing and adoption of brumbies that need to be removed from the park. The NSW Government will introduce a Bill to recognise and protect the heritage value of the brumby into the NSW Parliament during the final sitting week in May 2018. In addition to the Bill, the Minister for the Environment has approved horse riding in four national parks - Kosciuszko, Deua, Monga, and Mummel Gulf - following a two-year comprehensive trial and monitoring, which showed horse riding caused minimal impacts where it occurred. Final arrangements should be ready by December 2018 when the formal consultation process and amended plans of management are complete. “I thank the community for its patience during the trial which ran from April 2014 to April 2016, and am pleased the study found the environmental impacts of the horse riding – which has been carried out on set tracks for years – were minimal,” Mr Barilaro said.

First tease of the year

Mother Nature had us all excited at the beginning of May, when a polar blizzard sent snow clouds to the Snowy Mountains to dump about 14cm of snow across the resorts. Unfortunately, there has been little follow-up to date with a continuing dry weather pattern in place. But with cold overnight temperatures, the snow guns will be firing up to add to the natural layer. Resorts are hopeful the predicted very cold winter will result in some memorable snowfalls in 2018. EPIC TRAIL announcement for KNP

Member for Monaro John Barilaro joined members of the Snowy Mountains community to announce $27 million for riding and walking tracks Kosciuszko National Park.

Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro, and Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton recently announced a multi-million dollar funding boost for the Kosciuszko National Park, which will create one of Australia’s, if not the world’s, best multi-day walking tracks Mr Barilaro said the $27 million in funding, secured through the NSW Government’s Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund, will be spent developing walking and mountain biking trails in the picturesque National Park. Mr Barilaro said the project will totally transform summer tourism in the region. “The development of these hiking and biking trails will ensure the region is vibrant and busy all year-round,” Mr Barilaro said. “It means people won’t just have jobs three months of winter, they’ll have work for 12 months of the year, thanks to a steady stream of visitors, mountain bikers and walkers. “The economic benefits, let alone the social, environmental and health benefits of a project like this, can’t be overstated. “The work on the trails is expected to create a combined 139 full-time jobs in the region over the course of their construction. “Once delivered, the upgraded National Park is expected to support an additional 190 full- time positions,” he said. Ms Upton said the projects will no doubt put the wider Snowy Region firmly on the domestic and international tourism map. “The natural beauty of the Kosciuszko National Park is something so many Australians have already had the pleasure to enjoy, but we hope this project encourages

even more people to make the most of what the wider Snowy Region has to offer,” Ms Upton said. “The Park and these trails will have something for everyone to enjoy – whether it be taking in the mountain peaks, biking along the scenic Thredbo River, or enjoying the hospitality of the area’s world-class accommodation and dining facilities.” The funding will go towards two separate projects. Mick Pettitt, Director of the Southern Ranges Branch of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, said more than $17 million will be invested in the Kosciuszko Snowies Iconic Walk – to develop a new 25 kilometre section of track - which will ultimately link up with other tracks to create a world-class 44 kilometre multi-day walk. “When complete this iconic walk will allow visitors to hike all the way from Thredbo, via Charlotte Pass, Guthega, and Perisher, to Lake Crackenback,” Mr Pettitt said. “The new section of track from Charlotte Pass to Lake Crackenback will link existing trails across the alpine ‘roof of Australia’, with visitors able to stay in luxury resorts or backcountry camping facilities along the way,” he said. A further $9.8 million will see the popular Thredbo Valley Track extended by 21 kilometres, and it will be constructed using International Mountain Bike Association Guidelines. “Once complete, the Thredbo Valley Track will be

more than 61 kilometres long, allowing for hiking and mountain biking all the way from Dead Horse Gap to Jindabyne,” Mr Pettitt said. The first stage of the Thredbo Valley Track extension will connect Lake Crackenback to trails in and around Jindabyne. The second stage will connect Thredbo to the Dead Horse Gap area, and the existing trail network that continues on into the Pilot Wilderness. Mr Barilaro said the connection of the trails opens up many more opportunities – not just for visitors, but for local businesses. “By linking all these trails, the Kosciuszko National Park will for the first time be able to host long-distance mountain biking tournaments, and will maximize the opportunities for the region to tap into the growing summer mountain biking market,” Mr Barilaro said. Work on the Thredbo Valley Track project is expected to commence by October 2018 with work on the Snowies Iconic Walk expected to commence in early 2019. With no work able to take place during winter, the first stage of the Thredbo Valley Track Extension is expected to open in 2019, with the final stage to be completed in 2020. The Snowies Iconic Walk will be delivered in stages over a four-year period with final completion in 2022. The concepts will undergo further detailed design and assessment to ensure relevant compliance with the Environment Planning and Assessment Act and the Kosciuszko National Park plan of management.

Peak Festival Funding Boost in its Tenth Year A healthy boost of $38,850 to the Peak Festival coffers in April, was welcomed by the Festival organising c committee and Perisher Resort. The funds were granted by John Barilaro as part of the Event Development Fund.

“These funds will go towards the development of a mobile friendly app to ensure visitors can access event information, both in the lead up to and during the event. In addition, the money will support improved shuttle bus services between Jindabyne and Perisher, resources to deliver better marketing and communications, and the creation of theming that will create a sense of place in the resort” states Mr Barilaro. The Event Development Fund is one of three funding streams in the expanded Regional Flagship Events Program which was announced in 2016. The Fund offers annual grants of up to $50,000 to regional events. “The NSW Government is determined to ensure every part of NSW reaps the benefits of our record investment and I congratulate the organisers of the Peak Festival on their strategy which is set to drive the local visitor economy” said Mr Barilaro. Assistant Festival organiser Tracy Thew said “This is a fantastic boost to our marketing and operating budget. We are developing a new mobile app to improve the usability for festival goers once here, and we will introduce a free festival shuttle bus between Jindabyne and Smiggin Holes.” Peak Festival has teamed up with Snowy Shuttles to provide a free shuttle from the Jindabyne Old Town Centre to Smiggins Hotel, as well as an affordable bus service from Canberra to Jindabyne and return. The Perisher-Smiggins Resort shuttle buses will also be running throughout the festival. “Extra marketing funding has already returned an increase in ticket sales, which are already up over last year” said Tracy Thew, “and accommodation bookings and festival packages have increased each year since the festival started.” Perisher’s Chief Operating Officer Peter Brulisauer said “It helps to keep what is the best opening weekend

music event in this region going. Music festivals are difficult to run and it takes a lot of effort from passionate volunteers, which the Perisher Chamber of Commerce have organised for ten years.” “It is a great way to open the Perisher season, and welcome visitors back with fantastic live Australian music. Perisher is a great venue… and every year I look forward to seeing the acts. Enjoy the festival!” said Mr Brulisauer. Over 35 Australian and International artists will perform across 10 live stages to present over 120 memorable live music experience in the Snowy Mountains. Performers for 2018 include Dan Sultan, Hussy Hicks, Sahara Beck, Elektrik Lemonade, Lizzy Flynn and the Reckoning, Hot Potato Band, Cool Out Sun, Haiku Hands, Nomika, The Groove, Cigany Weaver, Balkan Elvis, DJ Eddy Flyingfingaz, JUKes, and many more…. check out the artist line-up for the details. The Perisher PEAK Upload Competition is on again, giving unsigned live performers the opportunity to strut their stuff in front of judges and audiences on the festival stage at the The Man from Snowy River Hotel on Sunday 10th June. Great prizes and fame are on offer. The Youth Stage presented by South East Arts, is a popular feature of the Peak Festival, staged in the Jax Bar on Saturday from 12:00pm and Sunday from 11:30am. A Community Stage returns to the northern end of the Perisher Centre, for local groups to participate in entertaining the audiences. Busking stations organised by Alan Spencer of Cooma Music, are located at the Perisher Ski Tube Terminal, the Perisher Centre and the Smiggins Hotel Plaza area. With only a few weeks to go, there is a lot of last minute activity by the committee, volunteers and resort staff to make the 10th Peak Festival a memorable event.

Mural comes to life at Every year Rhythm Snowsports in Cooma change their 22m shop front mural, and 2018 is an absolute doozy. Created by Jindabyne artist Mike Shankster, who you may know from the Jindy skatepark murals, the theme this year is ‘local’. The mural takes you on the journey from Cooma to the snow, starting with all the crazy characters you find at Rhythm, lined out the door waiting to get decked out in all the latest winter gear. Along the way, you pass all the iconic Snowy Mountains landmarks, like the giant Snowy River Sphere that people can’t resist climbing.* Created by south coast sculptor Richard Moffatt, the sphere is made from

recycled steel beams originally used in the construction of the Ski Tube and is a sign you’re getting closer to the slopes. There is of course some iconic wildlife along the way, the beautiful lake Jindabyne and a hitch-hiker looking to go to Stanley’s – an out of bounds area at Thredbo – with the trip ending at Rhythm Snowline at Smiggins. The mural took Mike about 60 hours to complete and the team at Rhythm are so excited about the result. “Every time I look at it, I notice something new,” says Emily Dorahy of Rhythm. “We are so stoked with it this year, and I think locals are really going to get a kick out of it as well as tourists.

“Mike is genius. I am starting to worry about what we are going to have to come up with for next year that will be even better than this.” Mike says his favourite part of the mural is the kombi van at Rhythm. “I think this best represents what Rhythm is actually like during winter. “The road sign with ‘chaos next 64kms’ is also a great bit which, for those who drive to the snow, know just how much chaos there is on the roads and trying to get up to the ski fields.” *Please do not climb the sphere – very dangerous.

While many only think of the ski fields when they hear â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Snowy Mountainsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; many more are starting to explore the area during the warmer months too. National Parks and Wildlife Services have seen a 20 per cent rise in non-winter visitation to the area over the last seven years. Kosciuszko National Park is NSWâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest national park and during the summer months visitors can enjoy the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural environment as well as hiking, mountain biking and fishing. More than 100,000 people walk to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko each year and around 25,000 ride one of the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest summer drawcards, the Thredbo Valley Track. NPWS has invested more than $7 million in construction of the Thredbo Valley Track. When complete, it will enable people to hike or mountain bike from Thredbo to Jindabyne. Another $27 million has been committed to develop walking and mountain biking trials, including the

You can pick one up from Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne, Perisher Visitor Office, or Tumut Visitor Centre. - You can complete a trip intention form at each of these locations. Completing the form doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t guarantee automatic search and rescue operation, so make sure your nominated contact (friend or family) is able to notify police if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t return on time. - Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rely solely on a GPS device as cold can affect the batteries. Combine a GPS with topographic maps and a compass and make sure you know how to use them.

Work to reduce risk of ice on highway With winter fast approaching, work is now underway to improve safety on the Snowy Mountains Highway and lessen the likelihood of black ice, Member for Monaro John Barilaro has announced. Mr Barilaro said the project involves removing trees from beside the highway near Steeple Flat Road to ensure the safety of motorists. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anyone who has travelled on the Snowy Mountains Highway during the cooler months will know how prone it is to being covered in ice,â&#x20AC;? Mr Barilaro said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black ice can be incredibly slippery and the hope is it will no longer be a problem or a risk along this part of the Snowy Mountains Highway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By removing trees along a 250 metre section beside the highway, the road will have greater exposure to the winter sun and the risk of black ice formation will be reduced.â&#x20AC;? Mr Barilaro said aside from improved safety, the other added benefit of this project is the

increased longevity of the road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black ice reduces the life span of any road, as the surface seal deteriorates and requires extensive and ongoing maintenance to ensure it is safe,â&#x20AC;? Mr Barilaro said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By reducing the risk of black ice formation, the life span of the road is expected to increase and will therefore reduce ongoing maintenance costs and disruptions to the community when work takes place.â&#x20AC;? Mr Barilaro said work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the ski season in June, weather permitting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Changed traffic conditions including temporary lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place during work hours to ensure the project is carried out as safely and efficiently as possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Motorists are thanked in advance for their patience.â&#x20AC;?

Delegate Hotel From wild New Year’s Eve parties, to a simple game of darts or a good meal and a beer, the Delegate Hotel has long served as a social hub for the small town. And there’s no doubt that Delegate’s visitors are drawn to it as well! While country pubs often pass through many hands over the years, the Delegate Hotel as we know it has just two families in its history, which dates back to 1926. The original Delegate Hotel goes back even further, with the Delegate Argus newspaper mentioning it in an 1896 edition. It states that “Mr. C. W. Evans has commenced business in the above hotel (formerly known as the Northumberland hotel). ‘Charley’ is well and favorably known in this district, where by his genial disposition he has made numerous friends, which should ensure him success as a boniface.” The building that we know as the Delegate Hotel today was built by George and Theresa Morris many years later, with the couple buying the license of two of the three pubs in Delegate in the mid 1920s. They knocked one down and built the Delegate Hotel in 1926, and operated it themselves for years before leasing it out to others. The pub was to stay in the Morris family, being handed down to George and Theresa’s daughter, Jean and her husband, Tiny Preston, who took over

in 1960. Of course over nearly 40 years of ownership, the Morris family had some fascinating experiences at the Delegate Hotel, with George and Theresa’s granddaughter, Trina Manning still living in Delegate today. “My mother and my grandparents had some interesting stories to tell from

valuable – although injured - player when he heard that the Delegate Hotel was up for grabs. “Gary Ingram rang me and said that the Delegate pub was for sale. I went down there with a full cast and crutches to have a look,” he says. Graeme’s family owned the Commercial Hotel in Nimmitabel, and

the hotel over the years,” Trina says, “like horses in the bar and so on.” In 1981 Graeme Payten took on ownership of the Delegate Hotel, and you can still find him at the helm to this day. Graeme, originally from Nimmitabel, was Assistant Manager at the Easts Football Club in Canberra, and was a

later the Tudor Inn, so the Delegate Hotel was certainly in good hands. Throughout Graeme’s years at the popular pub he has made several changes to the building, including opening up what was the Ladies Lounge of the hotel. “The ladies used to have to sit out there, and there was a little peephole

to serve them through,” he laughs. He also extended the pool room into what was a verandah area, and added a two bedroom private flat to the premises. Having owned the pub for over 35 years, Graeme recalls some wild times, with Callaway parties, live music nights and New Year’s Eve all coming to mind as guaranteed good times. “We’ve had a lot of good staff over the years, and obviously a lot of good nights. They’ve toned down the bar dancing a bit these days, but used to be from here all along,” he says, pointing from one end of the long bar to the other, “chock-a-block.” Partying aside, Graeme agrees that the Delegate Hotel has been central to the town in more ways than one. “There’s been a lot of work done here,” he smiles,” a lot of things figured out over a few beers.” And the Hotel, as well as the Sunday Sips group that Graeme formed at the pub, has been heavily involved in the community, raising thousands for the hospital, fire brigade, preschool and countless other local groups. As it now looks towards changing hands again – and we won’t give away too much just yet - there is little doubt that the Delegate Hotel will continue to be the social heart of the small yet dynamic community of Delegate. You should call in for a beer!

Delegate History Museum

Snowy Scheme Museum, Adaminaby

From 1949 to 1975, thousands of workers from all over Australia and Europe came together to create one of the seven engineering wonders of the world. The Snowy Scheme Museum is a multi-dimensional insight into the constructions of the scheme, highlighting the achievements of the engineers, workers, machinery and the role the project played in the development of modern Australia.

This fascinating museum traces the social and economic history of the borderline village of Delegate. The small village has a big history and is famous for being the starting point for the March of the Snowy River Men in 1916. Bombala Historic Railway and Museum

The most recent addition to the region’s museum trail is the Dr Crozier Science and Heritage Museum, which displays the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region. Explore the extensive display of tangible artefacts, including rocks, fossils, cross-sections of trees, animal skeletons and even a wool fleece in the local farming segment. The museum also ties in with the narrative of the Snowy River Historical Society, which has an exhibition next door.

Bombala Historic Railway Station is the most southern station on the Goulburn-Bombala line. The station is no longer in use and now houses a small museum and lavender distilling plant for visitors to explore. The museum is run by enthusiastic volunteers and the railway houses old machinery, original platforms, sheds, ticket office, waiting rooms and a footbridge. NSW Corrective Services Gaol Museum Alongside the Cooma Gaol, this museum highlights the 200-year history of incarceration from convict days to the present in NSW prisons. Historic Geldmacher House was built around 1863 using locally made bricks. This state-of-the-art visitor facility showcases the amazing history of the Snowy Mountains Scheme from the early days of construction through to today’s operations. The centre houses an extensive photographic collection, models, hands-on exhibits, interactive displays, films and screens showing the scheme working in real-time. There are plenty of souvenirs to choose from and a coffee shop with cakes and light refreshments.

History of Hot Dogging by Randy Wieman

Randy Wieman has skied from the age of five, but found his true calling whilst on his first full winter season in 1972-3 in Davos, Switzerland. Randy skied every day, and managed to ride the ‘telecabine’ at 7:30am with the goods lift to ski for an hour before the lifts officially opened. Hot Dogging offered the variety of skiing moguls, practicing aerials or ballet, whatever the weather was doing, so he was always on his skis. The world’s first Hot Dog competition took place in 1971 on a steep mogul run on the Ridge of Bell Mountain in Aspen, Colorado. The skis were over two metres long, and judges were looking for spectacular, high speed runs over massive moguls which usually included big falls. Hot Dogging became Freestyle Skiing in the following year, with the three disciplines of Moguls, Aerials and Ballet. By 1976, the sport offered $500,000 prize money, freestylers were on the cover of all the ski magazines, and freestyle camps had sprouted all over the world. Ski clothing and equipment

In 1975, the first World Championships were in Cervinia, Italy where Randy competed with the best in the world in front of 5000 Italian spectators. Randy won the Australian title for the third year in a row, and then retired to run the PFCA, Professional Freestyler Competitors Association. From 1979 to 1983 the Peter Stuyvesant Freestyle Tour was the largest prize money freestyle competition in the world. $35,000 was up for grabs with 35 percent going to Australian competitors, attracting the best freestyle talent in the world. Due to litigation and end the of tobacco advertising, professional freestyle disappeared in 1983, reforming under the FIS, the International Ski Federation, and was included in the Winter Olympics. Winter fishing in the Snowy Mountains By Steve Williamson Ever think of a trout fishing experience when you want a day off from snow play? Visitors to the Snowy Mountains during the winter months do not often come for the trout fishing however winter can be the best time of year to catch a trout. People often talk about winter being the closed season for trout fishing however that only refers to the rivers and streams where the trout are spawning. In actual fact the lakes are open to fishing all year round. When you think about it, trout eat a lot of insects that fall into the water over summer months, but there is not a lot of food about for the trout to eat in the colder months. The trout are hungry. Trout are often seen cruising the edges of the lake and are not that fussy about what they eat in winter. But don’t expect the fishing to be ‘full on’ at this time of year. You need a little extra patience, as the fish are sluggish due to the chilly winter water, which is often near freezing.

However a benefit of the cooler months is you can sleep in and still manage to catch a trout even in the middle of the day, just be patient. The best methods for catching trout in winter are baits, like worms or even artificial bait or lures. Popular lures for winter are Tasmanian Devils however minnow lures that resemble small fish are also a must for the tackle box at this time of year. If you own a boat then trolling is also successful in winter and you don’t have to get out of bed early to catch fish as some of the largest of my winter fish are caught in the middle of the day. Fly fishing is another method that catches trout from the shore of our lakes and if you can’t cast a fly rod, just think about putting an artificial fly under a bubble float and cast that out of your normal fishing rod, it works just fine. Mmm... The best spots for a bite to eat in Cooma

Royal Hotel

The Royal Hotel is the oldest pub in town, and holds many precious memories for a great deal of locals. Prior to 1870, Lambie Street was the main street of Cooma, and The Royal Hotel was one of the main features. The Royal was built in 1858 and owned by James Hain. James Hain was born in England in 1806. He travelled to NSW, accompanied by his wife, two daughters and three sons in the ship ‘Petrel’ in 1849. After arrival in Sydney, he proceeded by bullock dray to Goulburn, where for some time he was employed by a Mr Thom, who owned a farm in the vicinity of what is now Thom’s Bridge. He then, about 1852, journeyed to Manaro (now Monaro), and with his sons obtained employment as a shepherd at Rock Flat. The family then moved into Cooma and on April 17, 1855, James Hain obtained a General Publican licence and opened the Lord Raglan Hotel (now the Raglan Gallery). This is one of Cooma’s oldest occupied buildings. The National Trust stone building was built in 1854 for James Hain and was the first building in Cooma to have an iron roof. The old-world garden was once the site of the first cricket match to be played on the Monaro. The Inn was a place of family tragedy for the Hain family with the death of young William. The children slept in a small, badly ventilated back bedroom. It was a damp house, and charcoal fires were lit to dry out the rooms. The house had just been painted with a calcium-based paint and it was thought the lack of ventilation and fumes caused the death. By 1858, James Hain had become prosperous enough to build the Royal Hotel. In 1860, he sold the Lord Raglan Inn to John Curtis and while living and working at the Royal Hotel he built a small general store on the

south side of what is now know as Sharp Street. After a fire gutted the store in the 1860s, the store was rebuilt and extended, solidly constructed in dressed granite blocks. The building is now the home of Birdsnest. The Heritage Council has recognised the historic buildings first built by James Hain in Lambie Street and the Lambie Street Walk continues to be enjoyed by people interested in the origins of Cooma. The Royal Hotel is a landmark in town. Its elaborate wide verandahs were added in 1900, and were the only street verandahs in Cooma to survive the demolition orders in the 1950s. James Hain died in November, 1884, leaving his two sons and two daughters surviving him and his funeral was attended by 50 of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. James’ son Samuel carried on the business under the name of S. Hain for a considerable number of years. In 1889 he met with a buggy accident consequent upon a horse bolting, and was never in good health after. He died on May 18, 1890, leaving a wife, four sons and four daughters. After the Hains, there was a parade of various owners, but probably the most well known was Mabel Bundy. Mabel owned the Royal from the early 1940s til the early 1980s when she passed away. The Royal is still affectionately known as ‘Bundy’s’ by many locals, and the current owner has named the sports bar ‘Bundy’s’ in honour of that. All who knew Mabel say they loved her, but describe her as a hard woman, not afraid to give you a crack over the knuckles with her cane if you needed to go home. Some claim to have seen Mabel’s ghost while staying at the hotel, and current owner John Meers says he still

feels her presence. “Each time she comes up in conversation, I seem to find a five cent piece shortly afterwards, always in the same area,” he says. “There have also been times where a table has not been reset after closing, and the next time I look, it has been done. She still runs a tight ship.” Mabel’s strong will is why the iconic verandahs remain despite the order to remove them in the 1950s. Mabel refused to take them down, and they couldn’t make her do it. With many functions held on that verandah, all the publicans and patrons since are glad she stuck to her guns. The posts holding the verandah are believed to be the original gas lanterns that were hand lit every night during those early days. Filling them in, they became the foundation of the verandah in 1900. The now storage rooms in the back of the hotel used to be the stables and at the turn of the century were used as gaol cells, with some prisoners rumoured to have died in them. There is also a well and series of tunnels underneath the Royal, which were used for moving water about the town. The Royal used to have an identity of being a shearers pub, and many have been meeting and drinking there for up to 60 years. Over the last 25 to 30 years, a local tradition has formed, with The Royal Hotel the place to go on Christmas Eve. With all those who have moved away from town migrating back to visit family for the holiday, it is great opportunity to catch up with old friends. The Royal has seen very few renovations in its time and was heritage listed in 1988. It consists of the public bar, lounge bar and dining area, a games room and budget accommodation.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve produced in excess of 80 artworks of this region over the last 12 years, inspired by art expeditions to the area. An infinitely changing landscape with four distinct seasons â&#x20AC;&#x201C; shifting and unstable. The Kosciuszko landscape has a sense of awe, loneliness and isolation. The main range is such an interesting landscape of scattered rocks, sharp crags and alpine flora, which in winter Snowy Outcrop 1, oil on canvas, 60x60cm is blanketed in snow. It is an endless supply of visual inspiration which is beautiful and sublime. Gestural markings and expressive strokes have a sense of movement and vigour in these artworks, the colours unmistakingly this uniquely Australian, alpine area. I want to express not just the forms of this landscape through mark making but also to evoke in the viewer a feeling of walking through the landscape. The Thredbo Snow Series is backâ&#x20AC;Ś

The 2018 edition of the Thredbo Snow Series is a five stop tour across the season that will see skiers and boarders line-up on some of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best freestyle set-ups, battling it out on rails, through the rider cross, down the freeride course, on a slopestyle and finishing with big air and with $60,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs its set to be a big one. The Snow Series is the perfect platform to take riders to the next level and beyond. Into its second decade the Snow Series has seen some of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best athletes launch their career with many Olympians and industry big names getting their first taste of competition over the years at this event. Each event will be situated around different areas of the mountain, the new set-ups and Thredboâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenging terrain will be the backbone of yet another successful year, it is sure to raise the bar in course design and competitive riding. Each set-up will allow competitors of all levels to participate, with seasoned pros riding alongside comp new comers so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great way to catch the best

in action and push up and coming riders. Once again for 2018, riders can gain vital points in Slopestyle and Big Air, two Olympic events, for the World Snowboard Tour (TTR) and Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) tour. The Series kicks off with the Rail Jam on 29 June and runs through the season wrapping up with Big Air on 31 August. There are 12 categories in each event open to skiers, boarders, juniors, opens, girls, boys and anyone willing to have a crack. Enter one event or take on the whole series to be crowned the 2018 Thredbo Snow Series champion. You might ride a rail like a champ but bust it big like a chimp, or rip up the Bluff like a king but flap about the Ridercross course; overall riding strengths and participation are the key to win the overall champ. Spectators are welcome to stop by and check out the action from the sidelines as there will be a DJ providing the tunes, fun giveaways and refreshments thanks to Coca Cola at every event.

The Artisits: Rowena Evans, Giovanni Aguilar and eleanor evans Rowena Evans grew up in Sydney and has always been interested in telling stories and making pictures. As a child she thought all adults could draw and that art and writing were normal occupations. She has a BA in Visual Arts and has worked as an illustrator, printmaker, writer, fairy, cartoonist and in community art, among other things. Rowenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work most often contains a mixture of reality and fantasy; it is always possible that something out of the ordinary may appear just around the next corner. Rowena has lived in Cooma since 1985. Eleanor Evans grew up in Cooma in a family of artists and engineers. She studied a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the Australian National University where she first became interested in stop motion animation. After graduating, Eleanor exhibited her work in

galleries around Australia. She makes a variety of work including painting, textile and experimental animation. In 2017 Eleanor received a MA in Stop Motion Animation from BAU Barcelona. Giovanni Antonio Aguilar GutiÃ©rrez was born in Barranquilla in Caribbean Colombia. He started painting as a child and went on to study graphic design at university. After working as a graphic designer and graphic design teacher for almost ten years, Giovanni returned to university and received a MA in Stop Motion Animation from BAU Barcelona in 2017. His work is inspired by the colourful exuberance of the Caribbean where he grew up. Eleanor and Giovanni met while studying in Barcelona. They collaborate on projects in a variety of stop motion techniques.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council have begun installing koala warning signs in the region, particularly around Numeralla. Member of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s Koala Committee James Fitzgerald says the installation of the 18 signs are something he has been encouraging for some time. “It is great to see these signs being installed in our region and it is a positive step that council is taking to help save our local koalas,” says James. “These signs are also important for motorists, because people might be surprised to see a koala and swerve to avoid hitting a koala and that could result in a serious traffic accident. “The signs will alert people to the need to keep an eye out for koalas and help to prevent accidents where both koalas and people can potentially be hurt. We have had a number of koalas killed on our local roads over recent years.” The location of the signs are primarily around the Tinderry Ranges and Jerangle down to around Numeralla. They are also along the Monaro Highway near Cooma and Bredbo. SMRC Group Manager Economic Development and Tourism Mark Adams says the signs are being installed as a result of the work done by Cooma-Monaro Council prior to the council merger in preparing a draft Koala Plan of Management for that area. “The project was funded by a $100,000 grant from the Environmental Trust and included a survey of many properties in the area to better understand the extent and numbers of the koala population,” he says. “As a result of the survey work the koala population in the area is estimated to be several hundred individual animals spread over a wide area east of the Monaro Highway. There seems to be a particular concentration of animals around the village of Numeralla.

“The signs weren’t originally part of the project however cost savings during the survey portion of the project allowed them to be purchased. Koalas are often sighted along roads in the region and are sometimes killed or injured so the signs were seen as a way of hopefully helping to reduce these incidents by reminding drivers of their presence. Their installation is currently being undertaken by Snowy Monaro Regional Council.” James says people need to notify the relevant rescue groups should they see a koala out of its habitat. “If you see a koala, it is a good idea to phone one of our local wildlife rescue groups either Wildcare on 6299 1966 or LAOKO on 6456 1313 to report the sighting,” says James. “If possible, a general photo of the koala and a close up photo of the koala’s eyes and a close up photo of the koala’s bottom. This will gives us an idea of the health of the koala. Koalas with chlamydia can suffer from conjunctivitis, which can cause blindness if not treated and also a condition called ‘wet bottom’. “This condition happens when chlamydia causes the bladder lining to thicken, the koala can no longer hold much urine in its bladder and starts to constantly drip urine which darkens the fur around its bottom. Your photos could help us determine whether we need to go out and rescue a koala. Chlamydia can be treated successfully with antibiotics but great care must be taken in the selection of the type of antibiotic. Most antibiotics that can be safely used in humans and animals will kill the special gut bacteria that the koala needs to digest eucalyptus leaf and the koala will die. “As a general rule most koalas that are seen within habitat do not require rescuing. Koalas in our area that do most often require rescuing, are the koalas that wonder out of habitat and out onto the Monaro grassland where they cannot find enough food to eat.

“Last spring/summer four koalas required rescuing between Cooma and Bredbo. All were very thin and had very low body scores and required a few months of good food before they could be successfully released back into the wild. “Two of these koalas tested positive for chlamydia and required treatment. The Koala Health Hub at Sydney University do all the biochemistry, haematology and chlamydia testing from samples collected from our local rescued koalas. A tissue sample is also provided to the Australian Museum in Sydney for their koala DNA work. One other koala was rescued last spring/summer from a farmhouse at Peak View. It was only in care for two weeks while its test results were processed, once the all clear was given, it was released back into the wild. “It is important to note the type of chlamydia that koalas get cannot be transmitted to humans.”

regional art & culture award winner, pauline coxon Pauline Coxon Art Gallery was recently awarded the Regional Art and Culture Award at the 2018 Snowy Monaro Business Awards. Pauline and her husband Anthony are pictured at the awards night. When you walk into the Pauline Coxon Art Gallery in Berridale, you are immediately blown away by the exquisite paintings depicting the landscape and colours of the Snowy Mountains. On closer inspection, you’ll notice the cushions, coffee mugs, greeting cards and smaller paintings complementing the artist’s larger pieces. Pauline Coxon is an Aboriginal contemporary artist of the Biripi-Worimi Nations now living in Ngarigo country. “I am a traditional descendant of the snow-capped mountains of the Barrington and the Great Lakes of the Worimi entering the sea at Seals Rocks,” she said. Her art reflects landscapes of journey.

Pauline and her husband, Anthony came to the Snowy Monaro in 2012 when Anthony secured a job with CoomaMonaro Shire Council as its mobile library operator. The couple bought the building in Park Street in 2014, initially naming it ‘The Berridale Art Gallery’. These days, the gallery is called Pauline Coxon Art Gallery and the building in Park Street has been lovingly painted and renovated. Its original owner, Arthur Costello would hardly recognise it now. Arthur built the building as the original laundromat for the Snowy Scheme and used to do his boxing practise in the building. Pauline’s gallery is a working gallery and visitors often find her immersed in an intricate dot painting. “I do like painting while people browse around and ask me questions. “It’s nice to explain to them what I am creating.” Each season, Pauline decides on a

different theme for her paintings. During her trips to the mountains, she may take some photographs, but also has a photographic memory after observing the landscape. She said it is nice to be quiet and reflective when you are up in the mountains. Her paintings mirror those feelings. Pauline’s artwork is featured on boxes of Snowy Mountains Cookies, which are handed out by Qantas on their internal flights. This year will be the second time Pauline’s art has appeared on the boxes which usually feature photographs of the local area. They are a lovely reminder to Qantas passengers of the beauty of the Snowy Mountains and a feather in Pauline’s cap to have her art selected. To be artistic and business-minded is a wonderful achievement. Pauline shines in both areas and is indeed another successful woman in business bringing fame and fortune to the small village of Berridale.

Avoid the injury blues this winter

As the days get shorter, colder and drearier, Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is urging Australians to ignore the temptation to go into exercise hibernation this winter.

Sports Physiotherapist Rosemary Riley said wet and wintry conditions combined with heightened injury concerns often prevent Australians from being active during the long, cold months. Sports injuries peak during the months of May, June and July, with sport related hospital admissions increasing by an estimated 30 per cent SMA’s top tips for preventing injury this winter: • Check the forecast. How cold, windy and wet will it be? It’s important to tailor your work-out attire to the forecast. Lightweight layers that breathe and can be easily stowed are ideal so you can add/remove clothing according to the conditions and your exercise level. • Remember that sunburn can occur even on overcast days – particularly on the ski slopes – apply sunscreen and protect your eyes with UV protection goggles or sunglasses. • Protect your head and extremities from heat loss. Make sure you are equipped with beanies, gloves, well-fitting shoes and socks to limit excessive heat loss and prevent chilblains and frostbite. Ill-fitting footwear can also cause blisters, nerve and joint pain.

LAOKO (Looking After Our Kosciuszko Orphans) is the second longest running wildlife rescue group in the state. Formed in 1978, the not-for-profit organisation has rescued countless numbers of native wildlife in the Snowy Mountains. During winter, they can get as many as five animals a day due to the increase in traffic. The majority of road accidents involve male animals, however there are occasionally females carrying young. When a person finds an injured animal, they can call LAOKO on 6456 1313. Once the volunteer has determined all the people present are unharmed and their vehicle has been moved safely off the road, they will take the details of the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s condition and location of the accident. Asking the caller to remain there, a volunteer rescuer will inform the police and attend the scene. The first thing the rescuer does is to check the sex and assess the injuries. Unfortunately most cases require destroying the animal to put it out of its suffering. Several of the volunteers are licensed to shoot the animals, if not, the police are called. If there is a joey, LAOKO will always take it into care. Animal coordinators assign it to a rescuer who has the relevant expertise in that particular species and age. The organisation is made up of trained volunteers. With about 10 core volunteers at the moment, LAOKO is always looking for more help, and of course, more donations. The cost of raising orphaned wildlife is not cheap and 80 percent of the money LAOKO raises goes to purchasing milk. Marsupial milk costs $25 per kilogram. Volunteers are required to pay about half, with LAOKO subsidising the cost. Current president Pete Graham says that volunteers are not to take the job on lightly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Taking on an orphaned animal is a 24/7 task. Kangaroos are a bit less.â&#x20AC;? Pete himself has had up to four wombats at once and says that one volunteer had seven young animals to care for at one time, having to sleep in 20-minute shifts. LAOKO operates under a National Parks and Wildlife Service licence, with all volunteers trained according to the National Parks and Wildlife Act. A report is sent in each year of what the organisation has done.
