Welcome to the 2013 Monaro Merino Association ram sale week Welcome to the 2013 Monaro Merino Association ram sale week. Merino Breeders from the Monaro and across Australia will be spoilt for choice over the few weeks as Monaro Merino Association member studs hold their annual ram sales. The genetics offered by these studs have long held the deserved reputation of being amongst the most productive in the country. They have consistently proven themselves in the show ring, wether trials and on farm as being robust, hardy and productive. 2013 has been no exception with Monaro Merino Studs winning several broad ribbons at major shows with both sheep and

wool exhibits, winning national wether trials and producing several trait leaders in the Merino Select ASBV’s. Studs from across the Monaro are consistently investing in the improvement of their genetics and producing animals that thrive in a wide range of environments. The mild winter and favourable season will ensure that all the rams will present well for perspective buyers. I encourage all Merino breeders to put aside some time to visit a few or all of these sales. The versatility of the modern Merino ensures that it is one of the most productive agricultural industries,

and recent gains in both the wool and sheep markets indicate a positive outlook. Monaro Merinos are the real deal and the ram sales held over Merino Week are an excellent opportunity for all merino producers to satisfy their breeding objectives and enhance productivity. Full details of times and venues of these sales can be found at www.monaromerinos.com.au or by calling Simon King on 0414 897 390. May I also recommend a visit to the Raglan Gallery to see the “Merino Country Exhibition which will open on Saturday November 9 and run through to December 1.

Avonside Merino Stud was founded in 1990 at the family property “Avonside near Berridale. The stud moved to its new home “Muniong between Cooma and Adaminaby in 2010. Our aim to produce large framed, structurally sound sheep, capable of consistently producing heavy fleeces of fine-medium wool remains unchanged. Over the years we have reduced adult fibre diameter to 18.5-20 micron whilst still making gains in both wool cuts and bodyweights. Emphasis has been placed on wool quality, which must be stylish, well nourished, long stapled with superior handle and measurements. We believe that this blend of fine-medium wool, combined with high body and fleece weights is consistently the most profitable. Avonside has been able to achieve these aims by accessing some of the industry’s best genetics through AI. Leading sires from both Roseville Park and Wurrook have been used with great success. Recent ram purchases include a $7,500 Tara Park ram in 2009 and a $5,000 sire at the 2011 7199 Roseville Park On Property Ram Sale. Several sons of this sire will be available at this years’ sale, and all exhibit the exceptional wool quality of their father. Our latest AI programs were to Roseville Park 1864 in 2011 and Roseville Park 14 this year. This year

Middle View Merino Stud

Pictured left, Mikala and Bob Walters. Photo by Stephanie Lees. Above and below: the 2012 sale.

Middle View Merino Stud has been through the toughest year, beyond drought, flood or fire. The sudden loss of Bob in February, saw the heart of the family and stud in turmoil. Mikala, Georgia and Brody were and still are devastated by this loss. Bob’s drive, determination and passion for the Merino industry has given the Walters family the strength to make Bob’s last drop of ram lambs the best ever presented at a Middle View Merino Stud on property ram sale. Mikala has taken leave from teaching and set herself the challenge of maintaining the farm and stud. Throwing herself into all aspects

of running a farm and a Merino stud, she is proving that she is just as driven and passionate as Bob was. Through the support of classer Craig Wilson and stud stock agent for Landmark, Rick Power, the 100 rams to be offered are some of the best Middle View have ever presented. Several potential stud sires and top five percent of the drop will be offered to show clients Middle View Merino Stud is serious about producing rams of a high market quality. Inspection of sale rams is welcome prior to the ram sale and clients are reminded flock rams will be available for purchase the day after the sale.

Adina Merino Stud “Adina Merino Stud was registered in 1986 and breeding quality Merinos is both the business and the passion of long time local family Ray, Margaret and James Barron. Adina Merino Stud rams are run on the tough Monaro, they have hardy constitutions and fine to fine-medium wool on large frames. “Adina sheep have become renowned for their heavy cutting and superior wool qualities.

2013 has proved to be both a busy and successful year on the showing circuit for Adina Merino Stud. In July, “Adina travelled to Bendigo with a team of 12 rams and ewes to exhibit for the first time at The National Sheep & Wool Show. It is the largest Sheep Show in Australia where there were 650 Merinos competing in the Show After winning the 6 tooth Fine Wool Merino Ram Class, “Little Fergie went on to win Champion Open Fine Wool Merino Ram then Champion Fine Wool Merino Ram and finally Grand Champion Fine Wool Ram of the Show. “Little Fergie as he is affectionately known is a son of Grassy Creek 833 (Fergie) who is a son of Roseville Park 1135. He is an 18.1 Micron Ram with a SD of 3, CV of 16.6 and a comfort factor of 99.6, now weighing 150kg at 23 months. Little Fergie has an extremely long wool staple and is covered right to the toes, wool that many have described as exceptional. To compete at such a high level was a fabulous experience and to come home with 3 Broad Ribbons and 6 X Place ribbons made the trip well worthwhile and the Barron family are ecstatic at the success that was achieved. In the last week of August the Barron family along with a team of Rams and ewes travelled to Dubbo to exhibit for the first time

in the Rabobank National Merino Sheep Show where “Little Fergie once again ensured the Stud brought home broad ribbons After winning the August shorn Fine Wool Merino Ram Class, “Little Fergie went on to again win Champion August Shorn Fine Wool Merino Ram. This meant he was eligible to compete for the title of NSW Grand Champion Merino Ram, with “Little Fergie being named the NSW Reserve G r a n d Champion . A d i n a also enjoyed particular success with one of its Poll Merino Rams which earned the title of Reserve Champion FineMedium Wool Poll Merino Ram. “Little Fergie was also 2013 Champion August Shorn Fine Wool Ram at Sydney Show and on a local level 2013 Supreme Exhibit at Dalgety. In front of a crowd of onlookers interested to see how much wool he cut, “Little Fergie was shorn in Dubbo at the Show by the professional shearing team and he cut an impressive 16.4kg. The Barron family are ecstatic at the success they have had on Merino Showing circuit this year and the results have by far exceeded the expectations of this little Stud from the Monaro. This year “Adina Merino Stud will offer 42 Merino and Poll Merino Rams for sale by auction on Monday November 11 at the AWI WoolStore, The sale will commence at 12noon and inspections will be available from 10am. The Barron welcome any enquiry for inspections prior to the day.

Hazeldean Merino Stud This year’s offering at Hazeldean of 130 Merino and Poll Merino rams gives breeders an opportunity to secure superior, measured, high per for mance genetics. The line-up includes sons of proven, industry leading sires from Hazeldean as well as selected outside sires used to produce rams with performance and presence. The standout sire of the Hazeldean program is currently Hazeldean 8.3561, a ram who excels in the production of low fibre diameter and exceptionally heavy fleeceweight

progeny able to maximize profitability regardless of what the micron premium is doing. Some of the notable outside sires include Nerstane 8.0121 – a ram excelling in Sheep Genetics evaluation. A son of 8.121 topped the recent Hazeldean Riverina Ram Sale on October 17 selling for $5400. There are also some very good sons of Coromandel Poll 7.0002 and Stockman Jim. In keeping with the studs core breeding objectives, outside sires have been progeny tested and evaluated through Sheep Genetics and/or Central Test Sire Evaluation prior to use. They are therefore assessed before being introduced into the flock. As always the case, Hazeldean’s core objective is to deliver more profitable sheep to its clients. When making your choice on rams this season be clear in your mind what you want your sheep program to be for the next three seasons. Determine what market you are breeding for, because the decision you make now will carry the consequences for that time, the right decision will be rewarding and profitable. Although some sheep can handle minimal

management better than others, your management is the key to making the breed profitable. Remember, all breeds have their virtues it’s about type for you, your management and your environment. Pictured, Mark Pendergast and Lawrence Clifford.

New Learn About Wool kits deliver our fibre to the classroom A brand new resource is now available to both primary and secondary schools with the launch of the Australian Wool Innovation Education Kits. Developed in conjunction with leading primary and secondary teachers, the free Learn About Wool kits include multimedia presentations, fabric and fibre samples, factsheets and posters. The extensive classroom resources describe in detail the on-farm production, processing, marketing and fashion aspects of Australia’s natural fibre. Whether investigating wool as a material for a fashion project, exploring its rich and colourful history or investigating the way modern wool producers manage the natural environment, the Learn About Wool kit contains material to engage and excite students across all ages and learning areas. The kit has already been classroom-tested by many teachers. “The Learn About Wool kit will enable me to explore how wool is produced and what happens after it leaves the farm with my students. The samples will enable them to touch and feel the product as they learn. The broad range of factsheets give me the

confidence to talk about different aspects and the additional images and videos on the USB add an extra dimension to my teaching. The kit is an excellent resource for kinder to Year 10 students, said Mrs Peta Copps, Infants teacher, St Matthews Catholic School Mudgee. Large fabric samples within the kit allow children to feel the softness of Australian wool and are supported by text and graphics explaining the many potential users of the fibre. Large posters explain the journey wool takes from the sheep’s back through both woollen and worsted processing to the end user. Two sets of extensive factsheets contain significant industry information in easy-todigest graphics and text. The Workboot Series book “Wool is included as an informative resource developed by the Kondinin Group and continues to be popular with students of all ages. Additional information, videos and PDF resources are contained within a USB drive which is included. The kit builds on Australian Wool Innovation’s education portfolio which continues to reconnect new generations of Australians with our country’s most famous fibre. With tens of thousands of Sam the Lamb colouring books and posters distributed yearly, The Workboot series on Wool in school libraries and the Wool4SkoolŽ competition now engaging more than 1000 students annually, the message of living naturally and choosing wool is reaching many young Australians. Learn About Wool kits are free to

any primary or secondary teacher, simply contact the AWI Helpline on 1800 070 099 or email teacherskit@ wool.com.
