Dalgety’s 69 Annual Show th

Despite a lack of horses, the 69th Dalgety Show last Sunday was a great success. With Canberra Raiders and local star Brett White opening the show and signing autographs, all activities other than the horse events, the day went swimmingly. One of the star attractions was Milo the Clown, seen here delighting children (and adults) in his “Circus for Dummies” act. Milo will also appear at the Cooma Show this Saturday. The Cancer Council’s 2013 Relay for Life in Jindabyne began on Saturday morning March 2nd and concluded the following day at 10 am. The Relay for Life Ambassadors and Cancer Survivors Helen Blackmore Lee and Mariska Threadbold cut the ribbon marking the start of the Relay and led 30 survivors together with 35 carers around the John Connors Oval on the first lap of the event. Over 100 people were registered to participate over the 24-hour period of the Relay. The goal of the Relay is to raise awareness of cancer and money for research with a target of $30,000 across Australia this year. Since the event began in 1995, $16million has been dedicated to cancer research. Jindabyne’s Relay had a good start with one third of its target already raised prior to the commencement of this year’s Relay. Research reveals that one in two people will experience cancer in one form or another.

The research is making a difference with 8 in 10 lives being saved. In the 1960s, the chances of survival of childhood leukaemia was zero, today the chances of a cure is 90 percent. The chances of survival of cancer today are two hundred times better than previously through early detection and assistance provided following treatment. A new treatment for brain and pancreatic cancer has been developed. The use of Vitamin B3 has proved successful in the prevention of skin cancer.

Street. These are two activities undertaken as initiatives of the Uniting Church, with volunteers from members of the church and from the community. The Uniting Church provides a healthy breakfast for children at Cooma Public School who do not have breakfast at home, or who travel long distances to school and are ready for a re-fill by the time they arrive. Breakfast includes hot or cold Milo, cereal, toast and fruit, and seems to be enjoyed and appreciated by the increasing number of children participating. Breakfast Club operates each Tuesday and Wednesday morning and is attended by anything from 20 to 40 children. Two or three volunteers are rostered on each day.

The Uniting Church provides free tea, coffee, cordial and biscuits for people who are attending the Cooma local court every second Wednesday. Two volunteers provide the service for up to 25 people each court day, and it is really appreciated. Other community activities undertaken under the auspices of the Uniting Church include participation in Cooma Meals on Wheels and in the hospital trolley service at Cooma Hospital. Some 30 volunteers are involved in the rosters for both the Breakfast Club and Court House and many of them were able to join in the barbeque on Friday both to receive thanks from the church and to enjoy a time of fellowship.

Search commences for new Snowy Hydro CEO

The Board of Snowy Hydro Ltd has commenced a search for a successor for its long serving CEO, Terry Charlton. The Chairman of Snowy Hydro, Mr Bruce Hogan, said, “Terry has led Snowy Hydro with distinction for 14 years. The transformation of the former Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority to the world class commercial enterprise that is Snowy Hydro today is a credit to his leadership.” During Mr Charlton’s tenure the company has grown from a hydro generator with a capacity of 3756 Megawatts to now have a combined hydro and gas generation capacity of 4526 Megawatts, and a highly competitive retail arm in Red Energy. The Company has a very strong balance sheet and is returning dividends to its shareholders. “Terry has ensured that our water and environmental responsibilities have been delivered for our stakeholders and he has put our people first with a focus on safety and skills development. He has developed a strong executive team and fostered high employee morale and strong community relationships. In short, Terry Charlton will leave the business in very good shape,” Manager, Public Relations and Community Affairs. David Hogan, said. CEO Terry Charlton said “after 14 years I am very proud of the achievements of the company but I’m even more proud of our employees who have made Snowy Hydro the success it is today.”

The sun shone on the 69th Dalgety Show on Sunday which saw more than 2000 people visit the historic town to take part in the annual agricultural show. It had been two years since the last show, with the 2012 floods cancelling last year’s, but locals and those from further afield eagerly returned to enjoy one of the best days out on the Monaro. Unfortunately the recent heavy rains meant the show jumping and other

horse events couldn’t take place and while the horses were definitely missed the showground filled up with stalls, kids events, vintage engines and the Cooma Car Club. As always the sheep dog trials were a hit and took centre stage in front of the pavilion delighting young and old throughout the day and the pavilion came alive with a stunning flower display, veggies and art competition. Members of the Snowy River Alliance committee met at Dalgety recently. They are, from left, John Gallard, Vickii Wallace, Julie Greenwood, Peter Heeley, Liz McMahon, Nancy Gant-Thompson and Acacia Rose. The group is dismayed by plans to create an advisory committee. The NSW Government has announced a controversial plan for the future of the previously independent Snowy Scientific Committee in the Snowy Mountains. Environmentalists say the health of the Snowy River is under threat once more because the NSW Government is intending to replace the previous committee with an industry funded advisory group. Critics say the plan would mean river flows would no longer be regulated on the basis of environmental health, but purely for profit. In 2002 the Snowy initiative was established

in a joint move by the NSW, Victorian and Commonwealth Governments with the aim of improving the flow of water in the Snowy River and Snowy Mountains systems. As part of this plan an independent scientific committee was established in 2008 under the Snowy Hydro Corporatisation Act 1997 by the NSW Government with the aim of strategically boosting the flow of water in the Snowy system and protecting and conserving the rare environment of the Snowy Mountains but it has been inactive since early 2011. Now after almost two years since the first term of the Snowy Scientific Committee ended the NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson has released a discussion paper outlining a series of changes to the proposed replacement Committee. These changes will

mean that the Committee will be subject to much closer government control and lose its independence. The discussion paper outlines the proposed legislative amendments to section 57 of the Snowy Hydro Corporatisation Act 1997 including: that the structure and appointment of the Committee be subject to regulation, the appointment of an independent Chair, the balance of community and Government representation on the Committee, with the exception of advice or reports it produces, the committee will become subject to control and direction of the minister; and change the name from Snowy Scientific Committee to Snowy Advisory Committee to better reflect its role. Despite the outrage of locals and of members of the environmental group Snowy River Alliance,

Katrina Hodgkinson is arguing that the changes will be the best thing for the Committee and for the Snowy Mountains. “The proposed structure of the new Snowy Advisory Committee will be more flexible and adaptive to changing needs and be more responsive to the community and Government,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “We are seeking the public’s view on this proposal over the next six weeks, with written submissions to be received by Monday, April 1. “We have now had the opportunity to look back and see what has worked and what can be improved, and are seeking comment on the functions, committee membership, reporting arrangements and the role of the Chair,” Ms Hodgkinson said. Residents may like to note that the Contract for the water and sewer mains replacement has been awarded. Benex Pipelines will be responsible for the replacement of water mains in Park Road, sections of Gippsland Street and Munyang Street as well as the sewer mains in Townsend Street. The Department of Public Works have been appointed as Project Managers. This project is a part of the annual mains replacement program which has been drawn up for the next 30 years and aims to progress the asset renewal program identified in Council’s Strategic Business Plans for water and sewer. Council will endeavour to minimise the interruptions to water supply and will ensure residents are kept informed of works being undertaken. I ask residents to be patient while the works are taking place. The winter crop at the Jindabyne Community Garden was planted last Thursday. Everyone is encouraged, especially kids, to get involved in this great project. Go along and get your hands dirty and help with the next planting, do some watering or dig out some weeds. Contact Council for information on how to get involved.

Volunteers assembled at Norris Park for Keep Cooma Creek Clean day last Sunday. A new version of Clean Up Australia Day ‘Keep Cooma Creek Clean Day’ has been created through a collaboration of Cooma-Monaro Shire Council and Waterwatch to focus on one of Cooma’s most understated assets. The Cooma Council has claimed March 3 of each year as ‘Keep Cooma Creek Clean Day’ to tackle the acts of littering and environmental vandalism on our creek. Groups, businesses and individuals were encouraged by Cooma Council and Waterwatch to get behind this family friendly event, and they did just that with over 30 people attending, the best attendance for 5 years. Cooma Correctional Services team also took part, cleaning up around Polo Flat area. There was a litter collection ‘race’ along the creek corridor and cycle track between Nijong Oval and Albert St, mapping of litter

hotspots and a discussion about which parts of the creek the community would like to see preserved or improved. Cooma Rotary Club also provided a free lunch and Cooma Council provided a ‘lucky door prize’. The main major items salvaged from the creek were several shopping trolleys and the most dangerous to the environment was a cracked car battery, which would have been leaking battery acid into the environment. The Cooma Council describes these acts as environmental vandalism and says that people need to take more care when disposing of rubbish. After the success of this year’s new ‘Keep Cooma Creek Clean Day’, this new occasion will become an annual community event.

Dalgety show returns triumphant Continued from page 3. The highlight of the day for many was meeting NRL star and Canberra Raider, Brett White, who officially opened the show. “It is such an honour to be here,” Brett said. “Twenty four years ago I entered my own painting here at the show, and I feel so proud to be back and have my own kids here to enjoy it.” Despite recent knee injuries, White participated in the all important Arthur Costello Memorial Tug-O-War, however his team was defeated by the Dalgety Desert Duellers, who took out top prize of $100 which they generously donated back to the show. Brett presented the award to team captain Phillip Clarke whose team mates were Alex Andrich, Robert Hain, Willie Crowe, Greg Alcock and Aaron Crowe.

The Snowy River Tyre Power Teams challenge, was won by the Jindabyne Bombers. The team of eight did their best in flag races and wool bale rolling to beat the Dalgety Dudes (2nd) and the Berridale White Tales (3rd). This year saw a huge number of children and families at the show, and they weren’t disappointed with the inaugural Kids Races which saw youngsters roll large zucchinis’, race in the old fashioned Egg and Spoon race, and even race against one of the stars of the show Milo the Clown. Milo delighted all the kids with magic tricks, riding a unicycle, and had a constant trail of children following him on his stilts. Of course being an election year the pollies were out in force, and Dalgety Show President and town advocate,

Richard Wallace didn’t miss his opportunity to mention the proposed temporary closure of the historic Dalgety Bridge while he had the ear of the election hopefuls. While the bridge needs work done on it, Mr Wallace said “closing the bridge will place a huge toll on the town, economically and socially,” as he urged the politicians to consider alternative solutions. The Dalgety Show is one of the best days out on the Monaro thanks only to the dedicated volunteers, the townspeople of Dalgety, and the very generous sponsors from all across the Snowy River Shire and Cooma. This region owes an enormous thanks to them all.

Manhunt for missing prisoner A 34-year-old prisoner escaped from a work party at Snowy Oval, Cooma last Tuesday, sparking an intense manhunt in the area. Adam Bowhay had served 16 years of a 23-year sentence for a stabbing murder in 1997. It is alleged he had recently had a parole application refused. He was working on a Cooma-Monaro Shire Council funded community maintenance team at the time of his escape. After being seen by a member of the public, he was recaptured, without incident, on Thursday morning on the Billilingra Road, south of Bredbo at about 11.10am. Police from Monaro Local Area Command were alerted to Bowhay’s whereabouts and quickly attended the scene. He was charged with escaping custody and larceny and appeared in Goulburn Local Court last Friday, where his case was adjourned until April 10. He remains in custody. The Monaro Post was told the escapee had been seen by a number of people on Wednesday morning on the Shannon’s Flat Road. The sightings were reported to police. One witness told The Monaro Post Bowhay had been carrying a backpack and was not wearing the work gear he was reported to have escaped in. Locals believe he may have headed toward Mt Roberts before retracing his tracks and then used Billilingra Road to access the highway, but was apprehended before reaching the main road.

Community maintenance team Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has defended its connection with the community maintenance team. A council statement said. To assist in conveying to the community the benefits that the NSW Corrective Services and Cooma Monaro Shire Council Community Maintenance Team has been delivering to the community since the partnership between the parties was formed in 2010, I can provide the following information which will complement the information to be provided in the official press release. The program has been running since late 2010 and has completed the following jobs for the community: • Regular sports field marking; •M owing and trimming in parks and open spaces around Cooma; •C onstruction of fitness stations in Cooma; •P reparing showgrounds and parks for special events such as the Nimmitabel and Cooma shows; • Painting park buildings; • Repair of fences around parks; •W eed control around towns and rural roads; • Construction of pathways; •A ssisting volunteers to upgrade amenities at Cooma Showground; • Refurbished flagpoles in Bredbo. The community maintenance team works with a council supervisor five days a week and is employed doing many jobs for which council does not have the resources. A lot of the jobs that are done in and around Cooma and the villages and the shire’s roads really add the finishing touches to our shire’s presentation that our normal

service” said Library Manager Pam Veiss. The one-on-one sessions will run from 10am until 1pm and will give interested seniors the opportunity to have a private lesson with library staff, volunteers and students from Monaro High School. It is essential for people to RSVP by phoning 6455 1730. “The retro morning tea will be running throughout the morning, and we invite all library patrons to come along to enjoy the special ‘retro’ finger food library staff will be making from memories of food-past”, she said. The long awaited amalgamation of the Local Government Association of NSW and the Shires Association of NSW finally came to fruition last Friday, 1 March 2013. The new representative body, which will be known by its registered business name of Local Government NSW, comes into being at a time of major reviews and proposed changes to Local Government. Rightyo, this has gone far enough. Federal politicians in Rooty Hill at present are throwing money and promises around like there is no tomorrow. The Postman is sure some commuters in Sydney aren’t happy with the road or transport system. But people on the Jerangle, Yaouk and countless other roads in THIS electorate aren’t too cheerful either. What an obscene gesture - $1billion to buy votes when there are really urgent, necessary roadworks desperately needed in the bush. It’s just not good enough! Here’s a pat on the back to Dalgety identity Richard ‘Normie’ Wallace. As president of the Dalgety Show Society, Mr Wallace used his show opening to make a point about the proposed closure of the Dalgety Bridge for repair. It is proposed to close the bridge for a couple of months at least – this will cut Dalgety off from the western side fo the river – unless, of course, residents want to travel via Berridale and Jindabyne to reach Numbla Vale, and vice versa. Looks like another case of ‘professionals’ looking at a solution without considering the patient. Or are they intending to reinstate a ferry or even a flying fox? What’s this The Postman has heard - local butchers are missing out on supplying meat for the BlazeAid dinners and a big supermarket has been given the contract? Shouldn’t the locals be given a fair go, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council? Shop local, support locals and all that?

The recent Cooma-Monaro shire Council public meeting regarding rezoning of Council’s parks and open spaces was actually a debacle. The venue was too small, there was no sound system and it was intolerably hot. People left because they could not participate or felt ill. Where is our Town Hall?? Not one of the 165 plus attendees put their hand up to support Council’s proposed submission to “reclassify” parks, playgrounds and open spaces. The first member of the Public to speak, a senior gentleman, requested truth in government. Next, the Council stated that the 20 page “strategy plan” document incorporated community concerns. The Public thought this bulky document was overwhelming and contains devil in the detail. One Public member suggested there should have been a summary issued such as “Council want some parks re-zoned ‘operational’ so they can be sold.” Council indicated park sales monies would be used for upgrading remaining parks. Council quoted that recently $50,000 was spent on the new BellaVista park. It was not mentioned that the BellaVista developer funded this playground and also provided open space lands. Since 1993, under the EP&A regulations developers of subdivisions are to provide roads, gutters, drainage, sewage etc and under Section 94 are to provide cash and /or land in lieu of cash for capital works such as parks, access roads, or car parking associated

with the development. Unlike Council’s deteriorating infrastructure assets, irreplaceable park and open spaces land increase in value over time. State and Federal counterparts have shown that selling of Public lands and essential services is a draconian step of failed governments. The Mayor indicated there was no budget money for more parks upgrading. This is because Council invested Section 94 monies for interest bearing returns to make Council’s finances look good. There are sufficient funds for park improvements if Councilors learnt that they must continuously direct and revote Section 94 funds. Currently Council is depriving the community by not using Section 94 capital infrastructure funds for its intended purpose. The Chairman indicated that he was independent and was required to make a meeting report to Council. The report is now available on Council’s website. It is worth noting that during the meeting, Council were given unlimited time to respond to all criticisms, whereas community individuals had limited opportunity to be heard. Although this public meeting was required by Law, I sincerely hope that Council pay attention to the total community resistance to the idea of losing publicly owned parks, playgrounds and open spaces. Musical theatre returns to Cooma Theatre goers and musical fans can look forward to a special treat coming up in Cooma later this year with Cooma Little Theatre presenting the much loved and popular musical “Cabaret” in mid – late July. This production is based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It was also made into a film in 1972 which most people will remember with its great songs and storyline. It is based on a short novel “Goodbye to Berlin” by Christopher Isherwood. The setting is a seedy nightclub - the Kit Kat Klub - in 1931 Berlin as the Nazi party is rising to power. The main plot centres on Sally Bowles - a young English cabaret performer and her relationship with Cliff Bradshaw, a writer from the United States, with a sub-plot involving characters Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz and their doomed romance. The Master of Ceremonies

of the nightclub weaves his way through the story providing his own interpretation of events of the era and entertaining the audience with quirky and unforgettable songs . Judy Gibson will be taking on the directors’ role for this challenging production. Judy has been involved with the Little Theatre over the past 10 years in a variety of ways, including singing and acting. This is her first opportunity to direct and is relishing the opportunity to bring such an exciting production to entertain Cooma audiences. Judy’s previous experience in stage and music have seen her singing with the Sydney 2000 singers, Opera House choir, performing in the first ever Schools Spectacular at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and in various other productions in Sydney. Since coming to Cooma Judy has been involved with Cooma Dance Co and singing in their end of year

concerts, various CLT productions and she sang the National Anthem in front of the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffrey at the opening of the 2006 Cooma Show. She performed in the Gilbert and Sullivan Extravaganza in the role of Katisha from the Mikado, won the Open Solo Voice and the Ron Cox Outstanding Vocal Award sections in the 2012 Cooma Music Competition; and late last year entered the Australian National Singing Eisteddfod in Canberra where she came second in the Any Popular Song - Open section and third in the Musical Theatre - Open section. Judy is currently teaching vocal coaching to the junior singers at Cooma Dance Co. It has been some years since CLT has staged a musical Auditions will be held on Sunday March 17 at 2pm and Wednesday March 20 at 7:30pm. Actors, singers, dancers, technical crew - sound and lights (training provided), backstage crew, general helpers. No experience is necessary so if you have ever toyed with the idea

of becoming involved in community theatre, now is your opportunity. What is expected of me? Tourism conference at Nimmitabel

Frankie J Holden and his wife Michelle Pettigrove have seen almost every beautiful place in Australia but for their Tathra Beach Family Caravan Park’s annual conference out of all the places they have visited they choose to come to our very own Nimmitabel. The quiet Nimmitabel provided a great place for the 15 staff members to come away and workshop their business. “We wanted to learn from people that are united as a town and passionate about their businesses,” said Lorrie

Delle-Vergin, one of the six caravan park owners, along with Frankie and Michelle. Frankie and Michelle arrived along with their 13 other Caravan Park staff members on Sunday February 24 and stayed for two nights. The theme for the conference was to “Work smarter not harder” and they claimed they had much to learn from business owners in Nimmitabel. “The people of the town have been great, they opened up all the buildings for us to have a look around and for our

ghost tour on Sunday night. “I actually have a special affinity with Nimmitabel, we would always pass through here and a long time ago when I was doing travel journalism I wrote an article on Nimmitabel and the people were all so welcoming…I think I still have that article somewhere,” laughed Michelle. Frankie and Michelle are incredibly passionate about their caravan park and are equally as passionate about making people happy. They argue that the media industry, which they have both been a huge 4 YE part of, is much the same AR as entertaining guests W AR at Tathra Beach Family RA NT Caravan Park. Frankie Y* and his wife Michelle fell in love with the caravan park industry whilst filming their travel show ‘What’s Up Downunder’. They bought the Tathra Beach Family Park three

years ago with two other couples. In the recent NSW South Coast regional tourism awards they received a highly commended award for the park and were finalists in the Family Friendly Award. Frankie is heavily involved in entertaining guests, often seen at bingo, pizza or spud nights at the park and his guests are often privy to an impromptu gig from his days as and Ol’55 front man but gives “cleaning the toilets” a miss. “Moving into this different career was a natural fit for Michelle and I, it’s simply about making people happy, I often try to get out and entertain the guests but I need some backing vocalists for the Ol’55 song ‘On The Prowl’ and a lead vocalist for Cold Chisel’s ‘Khe Sanh’,” Frankie said. So if you missed seeing this renowned Aussie TV and music star in Nimmitabel then go stay at Tathra Beach Family Caravan park and you’re sure to see Frankie J Holden entertaining the guests with a bit of Ol’55.

Snowy advisory committee controversy Continued from page 4. In the discussion paper the Department of Primary industries argues that the independence of the original Snowy Scientific Committee from the Government was a weakness. If the suggested changes go ahead the proposed re-instated body will be subject to the administration of the Minister. Environmentalist groups have been stressing the importance of impartial scientific advice and believe that the new committee won’t be independent from the interests of industry or the government and therefore won’t have environmental conservation of the Snowy River in their interests. The announcement has also not pleased the activists who have been fighting for years to have the Independent Committee re-instated. The Chairman of the Snowy River Alliance, John Gallard is extremely concerned with the new proposal and believes that the NSW Government is afraid of an independent scientific committee. “We as a Snowy River Alliance are not at all happy with the establishment of the Snowy Advisory

Committee. We want the Snowy Scientific Committee to be re-established under the same act, which it was originally established under as an independent committee. We want total transparency and total control,” explained Mr Gallard. After years of fighting for the committee to be reestablished, Mr Gallard and the Snowy River Alliance are disgusted and frustrated with the latest announcement and believe the local community should be very concerned. “I’m very, very disturbed, for the people of NSW and Victoria and indeed, the people of Australia. “Because the people of Australia funded the original Snowy Scheme and own the Snowy Scheme, “This is not a consultation with the community. All you’re asked to comment on is the role of the Chair, membership and reporting arrangements of the Snowy Advisory Committee, that’s it. “The government are breaking their own laws,” Mr Gallard said. The changes are understood to require further approval and consideration in the coming weeks.

Assistance for fire victims

More assistance will be provided for fire victims with Cooma Monaro Shire Council’s decision to subsidise fees for the replacement of buildings destroyed by the fire. Council will donate 50 percent of the Construction Certificate or Complying Development Certificate application fees for the replacement of approved structures, which have been destroyed by the January bushfires, where it is demonstrated that the landholders insurance does not provide for those fees. The decision to donate half of the fees was made unanimously at councils February meeting. It follows the Tinderry fires in 2009 when council resolved in 2011 assist with reimbursement of some application fees for landowners where approved structures had been destroyed by bushfire. It is approved that similar

assistance is provided to landowners following the recent bushfires. General Manager of Cooma Monaro Shire Council, John Vucic says that council normally do this for every emergency in the area. “We need to be careful with guidelines from the government in this situation. “If any of these people have difficulties with debris we will accept it to the rubbish tip for free. “Whatever it takes for council to help, we’re prepared to do it. Council has a big heart and we recognise the plight of the people affected by the recent fires. The emotional scars are going to be around for a very long time but this Council is there to support them,” Mr Vucic said.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST COOMA-MONARO SHIRE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TASK FORCE Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced people to join the Cooma-Monaro Region Economic Development Task Force. The task force, once formed, will be asked to devise a long-term strategic plan and options for the economic development of the shire within the Cooma-Monaro region, reporting to council within a six-month timeframe. Background Prior to and following the community-based Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R) process of 2011/2012, there was significant and speculative discussion in the business and general community concerning the potential for economic development in Cooma and the region. In particular, discussion focused on the professional process that Cooma-Monaro Shire Council should undertake to achieve a balance between issues such as quality of life, conserving our environment, sustainable infrastructure, economic development and employment opportunities. Naturally, these processes must be undertaken in line with the State Government’s planning guidelines and the strategic community plans as identified in the IP&R process. Council’s strategic objective is to encourage and facilitate population and enterprise growth in the local and regional areas, with Cooma as the regional centre. To this end, council is seeking expressions of interest from individuals and stakeholder interests with the skills and experience to contribute to the task force and its aims. Further details and an EOI information package can be obtained by phoning Lee Evans on 6455 1706. Expressions of interest should be lodged with the undersigned by close of business Friday, 22 March, 2013: John Vucic, General Manager PO Box 714 Cooma-Monaro Shire Council COOMA NSW 2630

Charlotte Wood has been described as “one of the most intelligent and compassionate novelists in Australia” (The Age), and “one of our finest and most chameleonic writers” (The Australian). Charlotte began her writing career as cadet journalist in Cooma in 1984, after matriculating from Monaro High School. Even as cadet, Charlotte’s ability shone through, with her winning an EC Sommerlad Award for feature writing. Her progression from journalist to editor to novelist has been watched keenly by those she worked with locally and a host of fans. Her latest work is a book of contemplations on cooking, Love & Hunger: Thoughts on the Gift of Food (2012). Her fourth novel, Animal People (2011), received critical acclaim and was longlisted for the 2012 Miles Franklin Literary Award. Her earlier novels were shortlisted for various prizes including the Miles Franklin Award and regional Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. She writes a cookery blog at www.howtoshuckanoyster.com. Small business commissioner bill The Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, has spoken in support of the Small Business Commissioner Bill in State Parliament, arguing that small businesses in the Monaro deserve the opportunity to be supported by a Small Business Commissioner within the Government’s legislative framework. NSW Small Business Commissioner role was created in 2011 to provide an independent voice for small business operators. This Bill establishes the legislative framework for the NSW Small Business

Commissioner as a statutory officer. Mr Barilaro drew on his 20 year career in the small business sector in Queanbeyan when contributing to the debate yesterday. “These reforms are important for the many small businesses in the electorate of Monaro,” Mr Barilaro said. “The bill will give the commissioner the necessary legislative power to carry out the statutory functions of a truly independent and strong voice for small business. “The functions of the commissioner include

investigating complaints from small business relating to unfair treatment or where there is a public interest; making representations or taking action on behalf of small businesses; facilitating the development of codes of practice by industry; and advising the Minister on matters affecting small business. Mr Barilaro added that several jurisdictions in Australia have already introduced Small Business Commissioner legislation and NSW based business should be entitled to enjoy the same opportunity to be supported by a Small Business Commissioner.

in NSW, Troy’s show at Cooma will be one of the three fundraisers for the Rural Fire Service. Troy will be taking with him, special guest Cameron Cusack who will be providing some local content to the show. The local RFS will be attending the concert and accepting gold coin donations at the door, Troy will also be donating some money from ticket sales to help with fundraising. There will also be a signed guitar that will be raffled off at the end of the concerts, which will be on display at the merchandise stand with raffle ticket costing $5. “I myself was apart of my own Rural Fire Service at Halfway Creek where I grew up so I know how tough they have it and how little money they have, “We can’t wait to get down there, Cooma has always been one of my favourite places to perform. I just love the people, it’s always such a warm and inviting crowd, they make us feel like we just walked into our own local RSL Club “After what has been a challenging summer for so many people, I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting some of these people in person. If my music can bring some joy to these people struck by disaster, that’s the

very least I can do,” Troy said Having just returned from Tamworth, Troy Cassar-Daley recalls a sensational week of guest appearances, a sell-out show of his own and a stellar night at the Golden Guitar awards featuring a performance of his hit song ‘Home’. At this year’s CMAA Country Music Awards, Troy became the very proud winner of 4 more Golden Guitars showing how lucky Cooma is to host such an event with such a renowned country music star. Troy explained that what locals can expect from this concert is simply “someone with a band, who really loves their job. “Cameron will be providing some local content and I’m just excited to bring my new album ‘Home’ down there, I’ll be playing a few old songs as well though,” Troy Cassar-Daley’s generosity knows no bounds, always being the first to put his hand up for fundraising events. Troy has performed at Queenslands Flood Relief Telethon concert, Sound Relief in Melbourne, Toowoomba’s Spirit of Australia concert and just in the last few weeks at the Country Relief show in Tamworth. Troy is well known to personally get out and assist the flood and fire affected communities in both his own community and further beyond believing that music is a great way to heal. “Music is such a healing thing. It’s something you just can’t quantify,” Troy said. Clearly very keen to get back on the road, Troy definitely has a love for rural parts of Australia and can’t wait to visit Cooma. “It’s such a beautiful part of Australia you live in. It makes me feel humbled again visiting smaller towns, it’s not all about the cities, it’s about the people.” Tickets are available from Cooma Ex-Service’s Club or phone: 64521144.

President’s report The 138th Cooma Show, to be held on March 9, promises to be a fun day out for the whole family. After two years in which horse events had to be cancelled due to wet weather, 2013 sees the horse back on the oval, in a revised schedule to suit our local competitors. There have been changes made to the showjumping events as well, again reflecting the local demand as well as catering for the ‘big boys’ from away. This year’s show is being opened by the Chief Executive Officer of Snowy Hydro South Care, Owen Finegan. The opening will include a presentation of a cheque from the Cooma Pastoral and Agricultural Association to Snowy Hydro Southcare as part of the regional supporter program. All local rugby players, young and old, are also invited to come to the show to see Own, whose previous career included playing for the Wallabies and the ACT Brumbies. There will be a special stand for Snowy

Hydro Southcare, where locals can learn about the important work done by this service. A special feature of this year’s show is the return of the BMX bikes. John Graham and a team of six riders will entertain the crowd with three shows at 10am, 2pm and 7pm. The very popular woodchop will be back this year, after a wet year’s rest. This will include tree felling events which will be held on the oval in front of the grandstand. During the evening, the hot saw race will be held with local Con Wassink odds on to take the title. Once again, the yard dog trials will be held throughout the day, and it will be good to see them back this year. The dog high jump is also a crowd pleaser and Gordon Litchfield has been busy finetuning the jump apparatus for this year’s event. Don’t forget to bring your bouncy canine friend to have a crack at this event. The gold panning man will be there again this year, as will the patting paddock.

www.coomashow.com.au

This feature allows children of all ages to get up close to a variety of farmyard animals. In 2011 we had ‘RM’ one of Michael Green’s huge steers in the weight-guessing competition. This year Michael is bringing in another steer to take RM’s place, so keep your $1 coins handy to have a guess. You could win $100. (Hint: RM weighed more than 900kg). Another favourite returning to Cooma Show this year is Milo The Clown. Milo will perform at 11am-11:30am and 2pm-2.30pm with roving performances from 12.30 to 1.30pm. Of course, our usual sideshow alley will operate throughout the day and the many trade stalls will offer something of interest for all. Annette Schaefer Memorial Award New this year is a special award for our local knitters. Annette Schaefer was a long-time exhibitor and volunteer at Cooma Show. Despite illness last year, Mrs Schaefer still competed and won a number of prizes. She passed away a few days later. In her memory, her family has offered the Annette Schaefer memorial Award for the Most

Successful competitor in the knitting classes. The Cooma P & A sincerely thanks the family for this memorial award and their continued support of Cooma Show. I would like to sincerely thank all our sponsors for the show, from our naming sponsor, Service One Members Bank and to every other sponsor big or small. Each year the demands on local businesses grow and it is very gratifying that our sponsors have been able to support our show again this year. It’s a harsh fact, but without sponsors, they would be no show. The same goes for the many, many volunteers who assist the committee each year. To each and every one of you, I and the committee offer a grateful thanks. Now is a good time for people to become members of the association. Membership has many benefits, including a car pass into the grounds and a reduced cost for families to come to the show. The committee and I hope you will all enjoy your day at the Monaro’s big day out. See you there... Gail Eastaway, president, Cooma P & A

YOUR LOCAL SEWING SPECIALIST CLASSES AVAILABLE

It’s Showtime again in Cooma and what a wonderful opportunity to showcase what you can produce in your kitchen. The Food Section in the Cooma Pavilion is always a tantalising display of home baked delights. Why not take some time this year to enter a category or two and encourage your children to do some baking or decorating as well. Get your entries and submit them for judging at the Cooma Show. This year our food judges have generously offered to allow members of the public to be present during the judging so that they can listen to how the entries are critiqued and provide insight into what is required to be successful at show competitions. Please understand that space is limited so depending on how many people are present will determine how spectators will be placed. Judging will commence at 10am and run through to about 3pm on Friday March 8. The zone judging of the rich fruit cake section also takes place in Cooma each year to determine which fruit cake will be representing the South East region of NSW at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Please remember that exhibits must be on disposable bases and in plastic bags, no cling wrap is to be used. For more information about the rules of competition please refer to either the Show Schedule or take a look online at www.coomashow.com.au. Exhibitors are asked to bring entries to the Pavilion between 5:30pm and 8pm on Thursday 7 or from 8am to 9am on Friday March 8. Exhibits along with any certificates and ribbons can be collected from 5pm on Saturday March 12. Happy Baking! CONDIMENT SECTION The condiment section at the Cooma Show this year is welcoming entries once again with many categories in jams, jellies, pickles,

preserves, sauces, relishes and chutneys. “We don’t normally have many entries in the junior section so it would be really nice to see some younger exhibitors this year, Condiment Steward, Margaret Barron, said. There is even a microwave jam section for busy entrants with limited time. It is preferred that entries are in clean 375g jars with lids and are not overfilled with approximately 1cm left from the top. Window cleaner helps achieve a shiny clean surface on jars. Jams must be set – not runny – and of course, not overcooked with an unbroken surface. To achieve a flat surface, bubbles should be skimmed off while the condiment is still warm as presentation is the second most important factor after taste. There will be open judging this year as opposed to previous years where it was closed and exhibitors will be able to observe and ask the judges questions regarding their decisions. This may help people with their exhibits for next year as they are able to find out what the judges are looking for and make these adjustments in future years’ shows. Exhibits must be delivered in the afternoon on Thursday March 7 or by 9:30am on Friday March 8.

It’s showtime in Cooma FLOWER SECTION The flower section in the show this year is looking forward to seeing what exhibitors have grown in their gardens. Entries for this section must be brought to the pavilion from

6:30pm-9pm on Thursday March 7 or Friday morning March 8 before 9:30am. The main tip is to read the schedule as this provides all the information regarding cuts, stems, containers and other particulars that the judges require. It is advised that displays are not to be jammed into containers, rather neatly for all to admire. Containers must suit exhibits, such as a beer bottle for dahlias or roses and a saucer or basin for pansies or petunias. Stems must be decent and able to stand up and ‘look at you’. › Hard-wearing Baxter & Blundstone Boots Any display under or over the required blooms will be disqualified. JUNIOR JUDGING SCHOOL Kids who are keen to learn how to show judge are encouraged to

participate in the junior judging at the Cooma Show this year. If interested, turn up to the Cooma showground on Friday and go to the junior judging marquee at 9am for a 9.30am start. There are six sections including cattle, meat sheep, wool sheep, fleece, fruit and vegetables and poultry. Lunch will be provided on the day as well as cool drinks. For more information contact Jim Fletcher on 0432201484. Participants will be educated on their dress, presentation, oral skills and of course their judging. Past experience is not a necessity. Children are encouraged to ask the over-judge as many questions they like, no matter how simple they may seem, as the key motive is a learning experience. DOG HIGH JUMP This year’s Cooma Show will have something for every member of the family to enjoy. The very-popular dog high jump is back, with two divisions, one for big and one for little dogs. This competition has been keenly

contested in the past and there are some new candidates already in training for 2013. YARD DOGS The yard dogs competition will run throughout the day. This popular competition is good viewing and demonstrates how skillful our local trainers are in teaching their dogs to handle sheep. GOLD PANNING For those who would like to try something a bit different, gold-panning will offer that opportunity. You might find gold or a gemstone. WOODCHOP This year’s woodchop at Cooma Show will be using hardwood again. This year’s event is being organised and sponsored by Hopkins Logging. Competition begins on Saturday morning and the boys will be making the chips fly in the finals on Saturday evening. See the tree fellers in action on Saturday afternoon and don’t miss the noisy but entertaining Hot Saw race.

YOU Prosper Should you invest?

The answer to this only you know, to discover the answer you need to ask yourself a few questions. Why? By asking yourself the right questions allows you to discover firstly your own personal financial position, and importantly what your personal wants, needs and goals are, because we are all different aren’t we. Questions to ask yourself… 1) Do I have enough Super to secure my future? 2) When would I like to stop working? 3) Do I want to have real wealth or just live a comfortable life? 4) Based on the answer of Q.3 what does this mean to you. I mean how much do you really need? 5) How much do I need in my Super or retirement fund to provide me with the yearly income to last me the average 22 years we live after retirement? 6) What am I doing about it? 7) What does the pension pay? Below are some example answers for you that might help along with some facts. Answers and some facts… 1) Just so you know the average person just to survive the 22 years after retirement so they don’t outlive their money needs approx. $750 per week to live, not live your dream just surviving. Therefore $750 x 52 weeks in a year equals $39,000 x 22 years equals $858,000, so therefore you need approx. $858,000 to retire and just survive do you have it? 2) Most people would say 65, but you can retire sooner if you have a go.

Home Owners Not Expecting a March Rate Cut Most Australian home owners expect the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to leave the official cash rate unchanged for a third consecutive month, a national survey has found. The poll by leading mortgage broker Loan Market which asked ‘What action do you think the RBA is going to take at its March meeting?’ found 53 per cent of respondents anticipate the current cash rate to be maintained at 3 per cent. Loan Market Corporate Spokesman Paul Smith said 39 per cent of the 397 home owners surveyed predicted that the RBA

will lower the official rate by 25 basis points on Tuesday. “The RBA has released some firm statements in the past several weeks that indicate the cash rate will be held constant in the short term and used in reaction to any economic indicators falling below targeted ranges,” Mr Smith said. Mr Smith said that it appears home owners were well aware of the state of the Australian economy and the subsequent likelihood of rate cuts. In a similar survey last month, 55 per cent of home owners correctly predicted the RBA would leave rates unchanged.

Mature Mob at Calthorpe House

Cooma CWA meeting

First stop in Canberra on Thursday February 14 for the Mature Mob was at historic Calthorpe House, Mugga Way, Red Hill. Four well informed guides presented a comprehensive insight into the history of the house built in 1927. Calthorpes’ House is a great example of early Canberra architecture and still exists in its original state with the same furnishings and memorabilia including household appliances, clothing, toys and a pianola, which was played by the guides. Out of the house, folk enjoyed the garden and were intrigued with the air raid shelter - a reminder of the threat of attack during World War Two. A sign outside Ainslie Church of Christ (Welcome to our Cooma Friends) was a prelude to the warm welcome and delicious lunch served at Café@ Limestone. Table trimmings of red hearts, balloons and napkins reminded folk that it was Valentine’s Day! The afternoon was spent with five Guides at the Australian National

President Barbara Scanes welcomed 18 members to the February meeting of Cooma CWA. The newest member, Rae, was presented with her badge, gold card and CWA handbook of information and received a warm welcome for fellow members. Apologies were accepted from five members and the usual business was dealt with. The International Officer, Helen Reeves, gave more information about Morocco, the CWA country of study for this year. More information can be found in the February issue of the Journal. Kaye also spoke about her attendance at the Study School at Armidale in early February. The cooking competition resulted in first prize for the

Botanic Gardens. Walkers were led along the paths strewn with native plants from all parts of Australia while those in the 12 seater Flora Explorer bus sat in comfort as their Guide pointed out different and interesting species. All enjoyed a wonderful time of education and fresh air on a beautiful afternoon. The next Mature Mob outing is to Lockers Happy Valley Museum,

Adaminaby and Huts of the High Country with a National Parks Ranger on Thursday April 4. Contact Heather (6454 4305) for bookings. Mature Mob is an Initiative of the Anglican Parish of Cooma.

The Mature Mob is pictured at Calthorpe House, Canberra last month.

Citrus our Cream cake going to Beaty Russell and second to Kaye Anderson. Kaye was the winner of the competition for the gluten free Lemon Tea cake. For the March meeting, members can make their own choice from the schedule. The branch needs handicraft from the members for the display at the council meeting at Dalgety on March 19. The next meeting of the Cooma CWA will be held on Monday, March 11 at the Cooma Country Club. Friendship hour begins at 11am and members are asked to bring along any of their handicraft, already in progress to share their expertise with other members. A BYO lunch will follow at noon and the business meeting at 12.30pm.

Riposte Lisa Ashurst Sure is lucky I’m not in need of a new kettle at the moment (touch wood) because I’d have a cow of a time trying to decide which of the latest high-tech models I should spend stacks of money on. Even the stove-top whistling varieties have their quirks these days! It all came to my notice when Twin I decided to browse the kettle piece in a shopping insert in one of the Sunday newspapers and began reading out some of the features on the latest range of kettles. As it is, Daughter has a clear glass one that also has pretty blue lights and being addicted to gadgetry, a kettle that can moonlight as mood lighting really took her fancy and apparently it looks lovely when she turns off the room lights. I thought that was high tech but it would seem I was wrong. Kettle manufacturers have now taken it to the next level via a range of “smart” kettles with built-in

TREE SERVICES

functions that you don’t really need but for which you can fork out a lot more money if you fall for the musthave hype. The cheaper of the expensive ones merely offer bright colours (okay, I can go with that) or animal look-a-likes but if up-market is your thing then you can’t go past the model with the 13 (yes, 13!) temperature options, one of which is a “keep warm” function that allows you to keep the kettle nice and hot all day long on the off-chance that unexpected guests turn up on your doorstep. Like, they can’t wait a couple of minutes for the average kettle to boil? What kind of guests are they? Anyway, it gets better because for even more money you can get the one that has five pre-programmed temperature buttons which means you can be sure you are steeping your specialty teas and coffees at exactly the right temperature. Oookaaaay… Of course all of this got Twin I to thinking and sure enough he found

HIRE

the gap in the “smart” kettle market. “You know, what they need now is a phone app that connects with the kettle which can read the water level from the bedroom and then turn the kettle on. It could be activated by the alarm on the phone so that by the time you get up, the kettle would be boiled.” “Uh huh, and if the water level is too low…?” “There will be an app that can deal with that too. I just haven’t figured it out yet.” “Or you could just take yourself out to the kitchen and actually turn it on manually…” His look spoke volumes but if you really think about it, why do we need a lot of functions on a kettle and what happens to the kettle’s basic function, which is to boil water, if one of the other functions goes on the blink? What if you couldn’t get your morning cuppa as a result? Lucky I don’t need a new kettle (touch wood).

State dollars for BlazeAid

BlazeAid and other volunteer groups helping bushfire victims in the Cooma Monaro region get back on their feet are set to receive a $162,000 grant courtesy of the NSW Government. The Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, said the money will be used to support local councils with the cost of temporary camp facilities for BlazeAid volunteers. BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with farmers in disaster-affected areas helping to rebuild fencing on affected properties. “The volunteers are doing a fantastic job working with farmers and affected families to rebuild damaged fencing,” Mr Barilaro said. “In time likes these, it’s encouraging to see

the overwhelming support that BlazeAid and other volunteers are giving to farmers whose livelihoods have been devastated by fire.” The funds will help local council’s cover the costs involved in setting up temporary campsites where volunteers can be close to the fire ground. “The money will go towards site preparation, power, plumbing, shower and toilets and water supply,” Mr Barilaro said. Funds will also be available to council’s in the Bookham and Coonabarabran region. The Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson said the Department of Primary Industries will work with the affected regions on the appropriate distribution of funds.

Cooma Swimathon raises $8000 People of all ages gathered at Cooma Swimming Pool between 10am and 11am on Sunday to partake in the annual national fundraising event, the YMCA Swimathon. Cooma local and YMCA Swimathon ambassador, Jacob Suthern, has done his community – and the YMCA – proud after completing 100 laps and raising just over $5000 as part of the YMCA Swimathon. Jacob, who is sitting at first place on the national fundraising tally, more than tripled his fundraising total last year of $1442 and more than quadrupled the 600 metres he swam in 2012 after swimming 2.5 kilometres in two and a half hours yesterday. The YMCA Swimathon encourages people of all ages and abilities to dive in and swim laps to help give everyone in the community the chance to learn vital swimming and

water safety skills. In this year’s Swimathon there were 37 swimmers, completing more than 1,866 laps. The oldest participator in the event was Keith Montague at 89, who did 200 laps and the youngest was Jordan Weeks at six-years-old who did six laps and also Sharni Corby at six-years-old who did eight laps. All money raised from the YMCA Swimathon will be reinvested in the local community to help people such as Cooma’s Corby sisters who suffer from autism. Through the funds raised from the 2012 Swimathon, the sisters received swimming lessons at the pool. Sharni and Alyssa Corby both took part in the swim on Sunday. Through this year’s Swimathon, so far $7672 has been raised however it is estimated that number will reach

$8000 over the coming weeks. Pool manager Lorraine Alford, was ecstatic with the result and thanked the community for participating and giving so generously. “It was great to see so many people down here having a great day out and raising money for such a great cause,” she said. “The YMCA Swimathon really embodies everything the Y is about – being active, having fun and helping those in need. The money raised will go directly to ensure those living with a disability in the local community have the opportunity to learn to swim. “The people of Cooma have such big hearts and we are overwhelmed by their kindness and generosity.”

Thankyou to Tania Beech for some of the swimming photos

While Cooma Swimmers took to the water at Cooma pool last Sunday for the YMCA Swimathon, a group of disabled swimmers held their own swimathon last week and swam 182 laps between them. These swimmers are pictured above and top, right. Pictured right, proud grandmother Maree Burchall representing the Commonwealth Bank, swimathon sponsor, with her granddaughter Brittany.

Snow Dragons put on a sterling performance Coolamatong on Darling Harbour for Chinese New Year Golf report Sunday’s Stroke round was won by new club member Ron Gosde. Ball winners Tony Kiek, Ron Wallace, James Alexander and on the 15th Bob Key. Wednesday’s winner Ross Thompson was ahead of Jake Warwick, Gavin Ross and Steve Young. Nearest the pin on the third was Steve Young and on the 15th was Rob Duncan. Sunday is the first round of the Club Championships, players are asked to be at the club by 9am for tee off ahead of the ladies. Sunday for the ladies was a win to Mariana Lapago on a count back from Carolyn Major; runners up were Mary Obermaier and Carolyn O’Byrne. Nearest the pins went to Jan O’Halloran on the third and Maureen Roberts with third shot on the 18th. Wednesday Jan O’Halloran and Mary Obermaier tied for first, as a count back could not split them. Runners up were Carolyn Major, Betty Thompson and Lorraine Key. No one scored a nearest the pin. Sunday is the first round of the Club Championships. Tee off is 10am following the men.

One short week after the massively successful Flowing Festival the Snow Dragons were racing again, this time on Sydney Harbour as a part of the annual Chinese New Year’s regatta. The event was held on the picturesque Darling harbour and attracted teams from across all NSW including Kempsey, Bathurst and of course Sydney. Much like 2013’s zodiac symbol, the snake, conditions were slippery but

despite this our local team demonstrated the tenacity it is known for achieving two very close third positions in the mixed premiers heats. The crowning glory for team though was winning the Regional Cup, once again showing the rest of the state that the Lake Jindabyne Snow Dragons are a force to be reckoned with. A huge thanks to the entire team and in particular our sweep Maddi Davis, and congratulations on the great win.

For those interested in trying Dragon boating out for a sport feel free to join us down on the banks of Lake Jindabyne next to the Sailing Club. We train Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 6pm and Saturdays at 8.30am. We are a social and competitive team so if you simply want a social outing or the rush of adrenaline of competition then the Lake Jindabyne Snow Dragons is the team for you. See you out on the water!

McGregor and Schroeder win major pairs The Major Pairs Final was played last Saturday between Wayne Lodge/ Mel Storta against Neil McGregor/Peter Schroeder. The two teams were very evenly matched for most of the first 11 ends, although four shots to Neil and Peter on end five brought them back on even terms. From 9/9 all on end eleven Wayne and Mel dominated to lead 18/10. Eighteen proved to be their final score as Neil and Peter won five ends, including a five on end 19 and in a very tight final end gained the required one shot to win the final 19/18. Congratulations to Neil and Peter, better luck next time for Wayne and Mel. In a delayed Major Singles match Colin Roberson made a great start against Paul Cannell, to lead 14/7 after 13 ends. Ten shots to three in Paul’s favour over the next eight ends had him on even terms. In the run home Paul had the better of the scoring to win 31/27. Five matches of first round Minor Pairs were completed. Nelson Wallace made a good start against Mario Frezza to lead 14/9. Mario then began to make his run and lead 26/22 only to watch Nelson score nine

shots to three in the run home to win 31/29. Denis Steinfort ran into a red hot Ignazio Mondello and trailed 10/20 after 21 ends. Ignazio did not let up to win 31/12. Alan Crowe and Keith Goodwin were evenly matched for the first eight ends with Alan leading 7/5. Seven ends in a row for 14 shots put Keith in a commanding position and he went on to win 31/10. Mike Mannile and Colin Peuker had a ding-dong battle for 20 ends with Colin in front 17/16. At that point Colin’s relentless draw shots got the necessary points to win 31/18. The match of the day was between Mick Mayhew and Don Jarvis. Mick made a good start to lead 10/5 and managed to stay in front until end 21. Don’s revival was short lived as Mick outscored Don to lead 29/21 on end 37. Don’s tenacity then came to the fore to score 11 shots to one and grab victory 32/30 on end 42. In the only social game on Saturday Simon Schoon, Gwen Caldwell and Val Clark scored seven shots on the first three ends then dropped six on the

next end, against Mary Phillips, Renate Winckel and Leonie Snell, to even up the state of play. From that point it was anyone’s game but Mary, Renate and Leonie hung on to win 20/16. In District Pennants on Sunday, Cooma 1 defeated Adaminaby on all three rinks to win 6 points to 0 and Jindabyne did likewise to Cooma 2 in winning all three rinks and 6 points to 0. The point score for the Pennants is Jindabyne 10 ½ points, Cooma 1 7 ½ points, Adaminaby 5 points and Cooma 2 on 1 point. In Monaro Shield Cooma 1 defeated Bombala in winning 2 rinks and drawing 1 rink to give Cooma 1 4 ½ points and Bombala ½ point. The match between Nimmitabel and Jindabyne resulted in a win for Nimmitabel 3 points to 2, Point score Cooma 1 8 ½ points, Cooma 2 (who had the bye) 5 points, Nimmitabel and Jindabyne each on 3 points and Bombala on ½ point. Peter Schroeder has been chosen to skip a fours team representing our zone in State Championships at Ballina. All matches in Major Singles will be played next Saturday.

Mens Foursomes winners

A tribute to Madge Stokes Madge joined the Cooma Women’s Bowling Club in 1979, where she remained an active member until 2012. She was a dedicated and loyal member to both the club and the Snowy Mountains District WBA in which she held several executive positions in both, doing her term of three terms as president of the district. Madge won numerous events at both club and district levels, plus championships. She travelled out of the district to Bateman’s Bay and Eden where she met with old friends and made new ones. She rally enjoyed these days. Madge used to help bowlers with her knowledge of the game and the rules, of which she was a stickler. On special days she was always ready and willing to cook and help serve the food. Her sponges and scones were well sought after. She was always immaculate both on and off the green with her attire. Madge was made a life member and patron of Cooma Women’s Bowling Club, an award she richly deserved. Away from bowls Madge loved her home, knitting and watching all sports on television, especially rugby league. On Saturday afternoon,

we would “play the game over again” while enjoying a cuppa. I had known and been friends with her for more than 25 years, during which time we partnered each other in many tournaments, etc. She was a dear friend and I miss her. Rest in peace, old friend. - June Reidy

During the week Cooma golf course saw extensive rain and is now looking like a coastal course with a similar amount of run on the fairways. The Foursomes Championships were contested on Saturday with a closely fought contest and CGC played host to both the A reserve and B grade handicap pennant teams on Sunday. Once thing is for sure - scores have come back to earth. So what happened last week on the course… On Saturday the Men’s Foursome Championship was played with Andrew Jeffrey and Joshua Miller taking out A grade with a par round of 72 from Steve Young and Dave Paterson (72) narrowly missing out on the winners prize on a countback. B grade was taken out by Gordon Weston and Michael Boyce and C grade was won by Tony Monday and Lindsay Blewitt. Sunday saw a single stableford played with Nick Massari playing

very steady golf to top the field with 36 points. Ball winners went down to Prawit Prakotasung with 32 points. Nearest the pin on the ninth went to Denis Minehan and on the 17th Frank McKnight. On Wednesday, 23 players competed in a single medley stableford. Campbell Childs took out the winners prize with 37 points from Kerry Blencowe with 36 points on a countback. Ball winners went down to 31 points with Tony Monday just squeezing in. Nearest the pin on the ninth was won by Chris Brown and Frank McKnight hit it very close on the 17th. Next Saturday sees the Men’s NSW Golf 4BBB qualifying event with the top 3 teams qualifying to go onto the regional finals. Sunday and Wednesday are both individual medley stablefords with visitors most welcome. Junior golf is on this Sunday afternoon from 2pm gearing up for the sub-junior championships on shortly. See you on the greens. LTPM/11/00292

Clash of codes decided The weather cleared and provided cricket on the Monaro with sunny but cool conditions with all grounds heavy after the recent rain.

Jindabyne easily accounted for Coffeys which has all but secured them the Minor Premiership for this year with a major upset required to relegate them to second spot. Alpine 6/125 continued their late season form with a comfortable win over the the Cooma Cats all out for 124 and in the last game Berridale 7/190 picked up maximum points defeating the Cooma Cannons all out for 68 and three which would likely be some sort of record on the Monaro. On Sunday The Clash of the Codes grand final was finally played with the Cooma Stallions Rugby League 0/65 proving to be way too good for the Cooma Cats AFL all out 64. Table Jindabyne 94 Berridale 92 Coffeys 89 Cooma Cats 85 Alpine 61 Cooma Cannons 11 This week’s matches Berridale V Alpine @ Berridale Cooma Cannons V Jindabyne @ Nijong Coffeys V Cats @ Rotary. Berridale V Cooma Cannons match report A Cooma Cannons team light on for players, won the toss and elected to bat on the very slow Berridale ground. They were in trouble from the start losing regular wickets with J Mugridge

2/11 cutting the heart out of the top order batsman with stump to stump bowling. A Jakins (35) and B Geeves (12) gave the Cannons team a middle order boost and Jakins in particular was looking fairly comfortable at the crease until a change of bowlers saw J Riley (4/22) continue his late season form, running through the tail. Cooma Cannons all out 68. Berridale, needing the outright win to have any chance of securing a much wanted home semi final, set about chasing down the Cannons score and then posting a handy lead to have a chance at an outright victory. While the run rate was high Berridale lost two early wickets and with the score on 2/33 the Berridale batsman A Walters 57 and S Freebody 44 knuckled down and passed the Cannons total in only the 13th over. With the total passed the batsman were given the orders to score quick runs to post a healthy total. Berridale got the run rate moving and some of the lower order batsman got a chance to hit out Berridale declaring at 7/190. The equation was a pretty simple one for the Cooma Cannons as they were a massive 122 runs behind and any chance of victory was long gone. With only 19 overs of play left the Cooma Cannons should have had the game plan of defending to stave off the outright loss. That game plan somehow got misread and the next 5.4 overs saw the Cooma Cannons attempt to play some rather extravagant stroke making against the young legspin of A Bartel (3/2) and were just totally outclassed by the swing and seam of A O’Keeffe (4/1). Cooma Cannons all out for a disappointing three.
