Cloudy water from heavy runoffs Residents of Cooma may have been wondering about a slight cloudy appearance in their tap water last week. The cloudiness was due to recent heavy summer storm downpours in the Upper Murrumbidgee River resulting in excessive fine suspended particles in Cooma’s drinking source water which are not able to be removed easily. From a water treatment perspective, excessive sediment creates a water source that is very difficult to treat and manage. Residents can rest assured though that although the water contained fine particles of suspended sediment, the water was safe to drink as it was treated and filtered by the Cooma Water Treatment Plant and chlorine disinfectant residuals remained within specified limits. The cloudiness of our tap water is a reminder that looking after our drinking water sources (such as the upper Murrumbidgee River) so they can provide us with good quality drinking water is vitally important. In the water management world this is known as ‘source water protection’. The source water protection concept follows a simple logic- that preventing muck from getting into our water sources in the first place is a more

effective and less costly way to ensure that we have good water for use, as opposed to treating water once it is contaminated. In this sense, the upper Murrumbidgee River, upstream of Cooma is a source water catchment. Source water protection is not only important for our town water supplies- in rural areas such as ours, where we often utilise river and groundwater without treatment for stock and domestic purposes, it is equally important and beneficial. It is not just mud in water we are talking about either; clean water ‘at source’ usually also means less pathogens and contaminants. So for everyone concerned, protecting water quality ‘at source’ is just plain good sense. What can we do to protect our water quality sources? First and foremost this is about protecting our creeks, rivers and drainage lines with good, thick groundcover and also preventing erosion in our catchments. Protecting/planting deep rooted native vegetation, managing weeds such as willows and blackberry and controlling stock access also will help

to protect our water courses. Managing watercourses as special areas of a farm/ landscape also has other benefits such as reducing weed spread, providing biodiversity and stick shelter so it is an allround win-win. There are various organisations and resources available locally to support land managers to manage erosion and land around waterways. Community groups such as Landcare and Waterwatch are a good first contact point. Cooma Waterwatch can be contacted on 0429778633 or antia@coomawaterwatch. org.au. For any queries relating directly to the Cooma water supply, please contact Cooma-Monaro Shire Council on 64501777.

Mon-Fri 9am-3pm

95-97 Commissioner St, Cooma

The Boco Rock wind farm is again about to deliver long term community benefits. In this context Council is calling for applications for grants from an ongoing fund set up by Continental Wind Partners (CWP) Renewables and Council. The fund will be topped up by CWP contributing an amount of $2,500 per turbine per year for the operating life of the Boco Rock turbines. This equates to $90,000.00 per year that will be placed into the Enhancement Fund for community use. “This is an exciting outcome for the

community and I urge all community groups to apply. This fund will allow many community projects that previously would not have happened due to lack of funds, to finally be delivered, said Mayor Dean Lynch. The overarching objectives of the fund are to deliver community wide benefits, support the work of existing and future community needs and encourage local community innovation and support for issues of community importance. Two grant programs are available for the community to apply for. There

is a small grant program with a maximum grant of $2,000 and a large grant program with a maximum grant available of $50,000. Fund guidelines and application packs are avialable and close on March 4. These can be accessed via Council’s website or over the counter at Council Chambers. Please direct any queries to Kylie Douch on 6455 1777 or council@ cooma.nsw.gov.au

Emergency services exercise a success The various branches of the Monaro Emergency Services took part in a controlled simulation at Cooma airport last Monday to test the activation of emergency services through NSW Police Force Communications, while testing the facility’s emergency plan. It also served to test the interagency operations structure of the participating emergency services with an emphasis on control handover from airport management to senior police; rescuing of any survivors, managing fire and hazardous material and ensuring the site is secure; casualty triage and recovery; and emergency management arrangements. Participating agencies included the Snowy Mountains Aircraft Corporation PTY LTD, NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Ambulance, Local Government and NSW Health. The exercise involved a simulated air crash where a pilot had reported an impact with a number of kangaroos during take off. The pilot reported his fuel levels were dropping and that he could see shrapnel protruding from the wing. Once the plane landed the emergency services took action, working to extinguish any fires and beginning to extract passengers from the plane, which was simulated by a mini bus. The fire brigade and the RFS worked to extinguish any fires and remove passengers from the wreckage, aided by SES and overseen by NSW Police. Paramedics were also on scene to provide treatment to injured

In a press release issued before the exercise, NSW Police Force Monaro Local Area Commander, Superintendent Rod Smith, said the mock operation will utilise specialist resources and has required a significant amount of training and support in preparation for the exercise. “The Local Rescue Committee believe it is necessary to test areas of rescue that we do not routinely respond to, and which have a specific set of arrangements that need to be tested to ensure familiarity,” Supt Rod Smith said. Large scale exercises such as this do not occur often, and the simulation has given the various branches of the Monaro Emergency Services the opportunity to experience a large scale interagency response under controlled circumstances, benefitting everyone involved.

Baby Leo just couldn’t wait to be born!

Paramedics assisted the delivery of a baby boy at Bombala recently after the newborn decided he couldn’t wait until his mum reached hospital. Bombala Station Officer Jane Dunne and Paramedic Christopher Bucholtz were called to a Jonas St address about 3.40am on Thursday 21 January 2016 following a Triple Zero (000) call that a mother was in labour. SO Dunne said they arrived to find mum

Kelly Clarke in the labour with her third child. “We all felt we had time to make it to hospital, but baby Leo had other plans. He arrived without incident in the back of the ambulance on the side of the road.” Mum and baby were then transported to hospital where dad Paul caught up with his new son. The paramedics revisited the proud family last Wednesday and were extremely pleased

with young Leo’s progress. SO Dunne said Leo represented her third assisted delivery; for Paramedic Bucholtz it was his first! “As paramedics we see a lot of trauma so it is amazing to play a role in bringing a new life into the world. It really makes up for some of those responses where the outcome is not so good,” SO Dunne said. Latest figures show that in 2014 NSW Ambulance paramedics and call takers assisted the delivery of more than 300 babies whose mothers went into labour unexpectedly, before they could reach hospital. Of these, more than 200 babies were delivered with the assistance of NSW Ambulance paramedics and/ or call takers; the balance arriving before their mums could even make it to the telephone to dial Triple Zero (000). SO Dunne said while such a prospect might seem daunting, both for the expectant mum and any bystander called upon to

deliver a child, the community can be assured NSW Ambulance is highly skilled in guiding women through labour. SO Dunne and Paramedic Bucholtz provided the following key tips for those called to deliver a baby: Dial Triple Zero (000) and ask for an Ambulance, then stay on the line with the call taker Provide mum with assurance that an ambulance is on its way Make sure mum is lying on her back, either on a bed or somewhere else that is comfortable Provisions should include dry towels and a blanket in which to wrap the baby, in case it comes before the ambulance arrives. Also, some pillows to place under the mother’s bottom. Tell mum to take slow, deep breaths between contractions while continuing to reassure her that help is on its way When the baby is delivered, gently wipe its mouth and nose. Dry the baby off with the towel and wrap it in a blanket Don’t cut the umbilical cord Make sure mum and baby are both warm Await arrival of placenta (afterbirth). When it delivers, wrap it in a towel. The doctor will need to examine it to make sure it’s all out.

SRSC grading plan Recently, parts of Snowy River Shire have experienced in excess of 150mm of rain which has had a significant effect on gravel road networks. Council has also received an increase in the number of complaints received from the community who live along gravel roads. “Council has an annual maintenance grading plan for the Shire’s gravel road network and with over 450 kilometres of gravel road and varying weather conditions experienced across each town, this plan is often subject to frequent change”, explained Acting General Manager, Dennis Trezise. Commencing on the week of 8 February (weather dependent), the following grading schedule will be in place: General Maintenance Priority 1 Road Maintenance Avonside Road Yaouk Road Gullies Road Cootralantra Road Rockwell Road Kingston Road Matong Road “Council will continue to keep our community updated as to where and when we will be carrying out works across the Shire. Regular updates

are available on our website and on Councils Facebook page. We also have a number of other Road Network programs starting across the shire soon and the details for these works will also be available via these avenues,” said Mr Trezise. Council’s Roads Capital Expenditure work is anticipated to commence shortly and includes resheeting for the following identified roads: 1. Yaouk Road 2. Arable Road 3. Paupong Road 4. Stoney Creek Road A Heavy Patching Program on the Shires sealed road network which includes the Barry Way, Snowy River Way and Maffra Roads is scheduled to commence in April 2016 (weather dependant). Planning to partially seal sections of Avonside Road and re-sheeting of other problematic sections of that road is underway and is subject to Council approval. Community is the heart Mobile library is mobile again of us - Snowy CEO Snowy Hydro Ltd managing director Paul Broad has paid tribute to two retiring executives and celebrated an ‘internal pride” so far this year. Mr Broad told The Monaro Post last week he was happy that retiring executives Ken Lister and Ian Cooke would remain connected to the corporation despite their retirement. Mr Broad said Mr Cooke would be acting as a consultant, while Mr Lister would be mentoring younger staff. He said this continued connection would benefit the corporation, as their experience would not be lost. As to the internal pride – early in January dry hot conditions saw the entire Snowy network turned on ‘flat out’ to meet demand for the first time since 2013. The results – a 10 percent increase in efficiency – a tribute to the smart engineering Snowy has been engaged in. Mr Broad said this was the most exciting experience of his two and a half years as managing director. “Snowy keeps the lights on” he said. He added that he believed the Snowy ‘forefathers’ would be very pleased with this legacy of their dedication and hard work over many years and seeing that legacy taken to the next step. “I feel incredibly proud”, Mr Broad said. He spoke about the dry conditions west of the Great Dividing Range, adding that the reason the Snowy was created was to allow water to flow from east to west, generating electricity on the way. Speaking of the corporation’s two energy companies, Red Energy and

Lumo, Mr Broad said Red Energy had shown very strong growth in NSW. While both companies are joined, they service different market segments. Red Energy supplies electricity and gas and is very customer-service oriented. Lumo services Victoria and will also service South Australia. Lumo also offers the Direct Connect service, which assists in power connection. Red Energy will also service Queensland. Mr Broad said he was very pleased with the support Red Energy has locally – with most of the snowfields using Red. He said up to 30 percent of new connection had come from referrals from other users. Red Energy is also very involved with the local community and is sponsoring Cooma’s Red Festival Month in March. Mr Broad said ‘community is the heart of us - that won’t change”.

The Monaro Mobile Library has undergone a refurbishment and was back on the road last week. To celebrate, the Mobile Library had a cake at Berridale, and there are lucky door prizes at every stop over the next week. The renovation was possible thanks to an $11,000 grant and the facility has received some much needed upgrades. There is new carpet, new blinds, new lighting and an upgrade to the public computers, which will benefit the many people in the community that rely on the service. There has also been an extensive process undertaken to sort through all the old books, with many new books being added to the shelves. “It will benefit my regulars and hopefully create more curiosity for people who don’t read,” Mobile Library driver Anthony Coxon said. “People might go ‘well I have an interest in metalwork or gardening and I can go and get a book or dvd.”

Chelsea’s Cafe welcomes Cake, craft and conversation delicious new additions Craving a famous pie from The Bakehouse Adaminaby, but don’t have time to visit the home of the big trout? Chelsea’s Café is here to save the day. You can now grab a delicious hot meat pie, express from The Bakehouse Adaminaby right here in Cooma. If you have more of a sweet tooth, not to worry, they also have the scrumptious fruit pies from Adaminaby as well. Catriona Macdonald has been the owner of Chelsea’s for 12 months. With her daughter Amelia on deck and her son Zach about to start his cooking apprenticeship through her, it’s a family affair. Manager of the café is Claudette Hedger. Claudette took on the role about six months ago and is thoroughly enjoying it. Claudette, who is originally from Adaminaby, is a Jill-of-all-trades but has spent some time baking at the Nimmitabel Bakery and also The Bakehouse Adaminaby, where she spent five years working with Glen and Linda. “I really enjoy cooking,” she says, “It makes me feel good and I love to make things that are truly homemade and from fresh ingredients.” Claudette says she loves the

atmosphere of Chelsea’s Café. “It’s a great friendly place to come that’s not all rush, rush, rush,” she says, “The food is basic, but it’s really fresh and everything is homemade. Nothing is premade, even if you come in for a salad sandwich, we make it right then and there for you. It’s not been sitting in the fridge for hours.” Some of the more popular items on the menu include delicious chicken burgers and steak sandwiches. All the meat is bought locally from the Monaro Meats butcher, their neighbour on Vale Street. “If it means giving business to someone else in town, then we’ll do it,” says Claudette. So go on in and say hello to Claudette and the team. The café is open from 8am to 4pm weekdays and 8am to 2pm on weekends. Keep an eye out on the menu for some fresh warm cinnamon donuts, coming soon to go with your morning coffee at Chelsea’s.

Pictured below, Amelia Mortlock and Claudette Hedger are just a couple of friendly faces you’ll see at Chelsea’s Café.

Every Wednesday morning the craft group of the Jindabyne CWA can be found (more often than not) with some sort of needle in one hand and a slice of cake in the other. Our wonderful catering officer bakes something delicious for each craft session – she says because she can’t sew but enjoys the companionship. It really is a great morning. Usually the group are working together on a joint project, such as the river of poppies they created for the Jindabyne Anzac Centenary exhibition which form the focus of the current project. The one thousand poppies made for that display have been painstakingly removed from their backing and are being transformed into badges for Anzac Day 2016. All the proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Snowy River sub-branch of the RSL. Later this

month work will commence of the Jindabyne CWA’s entry for the Lakelight Sculpture. The group are a very friendly, welcoming bunch of women. It is not necessary to be skilled at handywork because there is always someone who is ready to teach anyone a new skill (as they taught this writer!) The group meet every Wednesday morning from 10 am to about 12 noon. With the exception of the second Wednesday of the month when they gather in the Jindabyne Memorial Hall, the craft group can be found upstairs at the Jindabyne Bowling Club. Contact the Jindabyne Branch Secretary Nancy Gant-Thompson on 64562159. Pictured are some members of the Jindabyne CWA Craft Group at a recent meeting.

New activities officer at SMHMC The Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre Nursing Home has a new activities officer, who started last week. Jess Scott has 10 years experience in aged care – her philosophy is that carers are there to assist people within their own home (the nursing home). Jess is very keen to work with the local community to improve support and participation and through this, to encourage more people to become involved with the volunteer program at the centre. Jess is also promoting the “Friends of the Home” concept, to operate similar to a hospital auxiliary. While still new to the Centre, Jess is looking at ways of increasing activities for the residents, including inviting, for example, craft groups to hold sessions which the residents can participate in. She is also looking at developing suitable garden beds so residents can enjoy some light gardening.

She is also looking at exercise programs to assist with mobility and general health of the residents. Jess said she was very excited to be working in a new facility – she has done most of her aged care work in Canberra. At present, she is commuting from Canberra and looking for a suitable property in Cooma or district.

School Captain Kate Hobbs with Catherine Stynes-Garratty. strengthen existing ones between the students, families and school. Thredbo Diggings is a beautiful location for this school event and we feel so lucky to know that it is in Jindabyne’s ‘back yard’. With tents pitched and all the necessities for comfortable camping arranged, we were thrilled to have such beautiful weather for the night. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 played in the river and rode bikes en masse around the shoreline. In between, they retreated to their family tents for a quick bite to eat, only to return to their previous creative outdoor games. On Friday February 5, Snowy Mountains Grammar Junior School headed to Thredbo Diggings once again for their annual Junior School Campout. The purpose of the experience is to allow students and families alike to spend some relaxing time in each other’s company at the start of the school year. As a result, there is the chance to help forge new relationships and

Developing the website has been a large job and there are sure to be errors in it. We would really appreciate your feedback if you find an error or think that we have missed something in the website. Bombala residents in some areas will have noticed that the water supply was not the best recently. Council staff have now replaced a major valve near the tank in Plunkett Street. As a result we are again flushing the mains this week to clean any residue out of the pipes. This will improve the quality of the water. Council is also currently finalising discussions with NSW Trade and Investment on the delivery of a three year program to assist local businesses in the area. More advice on this will be available shortly.

A misty, cool Cooma morning, last Thursday unfolded into a beautiful, sunny, warm day in Canberra for the Mature Mob. Gilbert and Richard, Canberra Airport Staff, welcomed the group and issued security badges, before escorting them to the ground floor area. Emily, AFP dog instructor with her AFP dog, Harlow, presented a very informative talk and demonstration on the care, training and duties of an AFP airport dog. After the group went through screening at security, Richard (Senior Airport Architect) informed Mobbers of the airport construction and facilities and spoke of the enhanced requirements needed, such as customs, immigration and enlarged fire-fighting equipment given the introduction of scheduled international flights into Canberra in September this year. A final highlight at the airport was a trip airside on the Cooma Coach taking MM on to taxiing runways and the main runway. The airport escort vehicle led on past the aviation fire shed, with the inevitable demonstration of a fire truck water jet targeting the coach! Close by was the Prime Ministers’ fleet and the airport control tower. Then it was back to the exit gate past the kangaroo sculpture, often used by air traffic

Carillonist Lyn introduced the special pieces she prepared for the Mob and then on their folding chairs in the warm sunshine and under the shade of the trees, Mobbers relaxed to the calming peals of the bells striking out classical harmonies and known pieces from shows. App preps Monaro parents and pupils for back to school Member for Eden-Monaro Peter Hendy said with around 1,180,000 students returning to school in NSW this week, it was a great time for local parents to download the latest back to school content on the Coalition’s popular Learning Potential app. “The start of a new school year is a busy and exciting time for many families and the Learning Potential app and website have been updated with more than 160 hints and ideas to help parents and their children get off to the right start,” Dr Hendy said. “This is the perfect app for all the parents of school-aged children on Monaro to have a great start to the new school year. “I encourage all parents of school aged children to download the free Learning Potential app and view and share the many great ideas on how to help your child make a great start to the new school year.” Dr Hendy said the free Learning Potential app had been updated with a range of new content, including: · Five tips to get your little one ready to start preschool;

· Ways to get your child excited about primary school; and · Helping teenagers plan for success in year 11 and goal setting for life after school with useful links to career planning websites. Minister for Education and Training Senator Simon Birmingham said with around 3.8 million students heading back to school, the Learning Potential app provides many useful back to school tips for busy parents beyond simply organising book packs and school bags. “It’s great for busy parents, covering everything from boredom-buster games, to shopping with maths, to computer coding, managing cyberbullying and much more,” Minister Birmingham said. The app, launched in August last year, has been a big hit with parents with more than 111,500 downloads to date. It was listed as #1 and #2 best free app in the Education category in Google Play and App Store following its launch. For more information visit: www. learningpotential.gov.au

General Manager, JOE VESCIO

The Member for Monaro, Mr John Barilaro and The Hon. Bronnie Taylor MP recently attended the official ceremony to mark the commencement of works at the Banjo Paterson Park playground. The new all-inclusive playground will provide children of all abilities a safe place to play and is one element of a staged, strategic plan to rejuvenate the Lake Jindabyne's foreshore parkland precinct. This project has been unique and a combined effort from everyone involved. Council has contributed $35,000 in funding and was also successful in gaining a further $40,000 through NSW Sport & Recreation Disability Grants program. John Barilaro secured $40,000 from the Community Building Partnerships Program, and the remainder of funds were raised by the community. The project is scheduled to be completed by the middle of March this year and in time for Easter however, this timeframe is weather dependant and Council will continue to notify residents of its progress. I congratulate the community, The Touched by Oliver Foundation and in particular my staff, who have all worked very hard to ensure this projects success.

Numeralla Public School closes With no enrolments for 2016 or 2017,the Numeralla Public School has unfortunately had to close its doors. “It was what it was,” says Department of Education Director of Public Schools NSW, Matthew Brown, “It is very sad and I know the community of Numeralla will be upset by the decision, but unfortunately there was nothing that could be done.” The formal decision by the Minister for the closure of the school was made last month. Numbers had dropped considerably over the last few years at Numeralla Public School. One of the reasons for this, according to the former Principal Joanne Tozer, was a group of about six or seven students completing Year 6 and moving on to high school in 2014.

Ms Tozer left Numeralla Public School at the end of 2014 to become the Principal of Bombala Public School in 2015. With their numbers dropping, Mr Brown held community consultation meetings last year at the Numeralla School to discuss its future. In these meetings parents discussed their children’s lack of opportunity for socialisation as one of the main reasons they planned on enrolling them in Cooma schools for 2016. Once these meetings had taken place, a committee was formed, as per policy, consisting of a community member, an Education Services representative, a member of the NSW Teachers Federation, a local principal and Mr Brown. With no children enrolled for 2016 or even 2017, the committee had no choice but to put

forward to the Minister a recommendation to close the school. In terms of the future, Mr Brown says there would have to be a big shift or change in the population of Numeralla for the school to reopen. He said that without a significant number of children who want to enrol in the school, it simply could not operate. “We always have to put what is best for the kids first,” says Mr Brown, “That is always our number one priority in these situations.” According to Mr Brown, the school’s resources supporting student learning have been offered to other local public schools and the Numeralla and District Association has expressed an interest in retaining school memorabilia.

SMCS has become solar-powered SMCS is now solar powered. Over the holidays we had 117 solar panels installed on the MPH roof. This means the school will now have renewable energy saving the environment and in the long term saving us money. SMCS also has a new back wall - colourbond at the back of the school facing the junior playground. This wall improves the school’s appearance. 2016 sees the formal introduction of the Peer support program for high school. The Peer Support Program is integrated into curricula and sustained through all year groups in high school. It supports positive cultural change within schools by incorporating a range of strategies developed through collaboration with members of the whole school community for the specific needs of the school. 2016 sees the senior students in Year 10 supporting those in Year 7.

In future years there is the scope to increase the program school wide. The other major improvement SMCS has made for 2016 is restructuring the fees starting from around $10 a week for families on maximum family tax benefit A, reduced Primary and reduced kindergarten fees. This Snowy Mountains Christian School’s commitment to the families in the Monaro to enable all families access to Christian Education. This year in 2016 sees the 20th Anniversary of Snowy Mountains Christian School. The school now has the second generation of its first pupils. The school’s alumni includes those studying to be doctors and engineers and prominent members of the Monaro community. SMCS has served the community faithfully in education over the last 20 years and with the new fee structure it opens the opportunity for all children in the Monaro quality nurturing Christian education in a small school environment.

Council has been advised of poor kill rates of Serrated Tussock which have been sprayed with flupropanate (Taskforcetm) this spring and summer in surrounding areas. These low kill rates are suspected to be due to Serrated Tussock developing resistance to flupropanate. Flupropanate resistant Serrated Tussock has the potential to be a crippling problem for agriculture. If you have found when using flupropanate to be ineffective in controlling Serrated Tussock or African Lovegrass please contact Council’s Vegetation Management Unit on Ph 6451 1108 to discuss the issue. Council officers can assist you in determining if you have flupropanate resistant Serrated Tussock on your property, offer advise on how to use herbicides without promoting herbicide resistance and can work with you to manage the issue if flupropanate resistant Serrated Tussock is on your property.

the

postman calls

The good folk of Nimity scored a wonderful day of their annual show last Saturday. With record attendances and a Very VIP on hand, the day was sure to be a success. Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove really seemed to enjoy their day out. Nothing like a trip to Nimmitabel on the Monaro to blow away a few cobwebs. It was great to see so many children taking part in the activities as well. The Postman noted, as he has done in previous years, that Narooma High School had outstanding success in the beef cattle section, winning the supreme beef exhibit class. So why can’t out local high schools have similar agricultural programs? With so many sheep and beef studs so close, it should be a relatively simple task to include those studies in the curriculum. For those of you attending tomorrow and Friday’s Public Inquiries into council amalgamation – don’t be afraid to state your case. That’s what democracy is all about!

Reader’s amalgamation concerns

Editor, In the wider conversations we are having within our community and region about Council amalgamation, concerns remain about the process, structure, purpose and perceived benefit of the NSW State Government’s mandate and policy. Such policies must be considered in the present geographical and financial context on the Monaro. What the State Government policy entails we don’t know. There are financial, employment and planning consequences, which need to be outlined in detail in a business case that is yet to be tabled. I believe one concern requiring clarification relates to water supply here. At present, Cooma gets its water from the Murrumbidgee River. It seems there is no permanent agreement about this. As I understand it the parties to the current Tantangara Agreement are the ACT Government and Snowy Hydro. The Cooma Monaro Shire Council would be, and hopefully remains, an interested party under such agreement with status and standing in this matter. Clarification is needed as to whether the present ad hoc arrangement will continue under the new enlarged regional shire. If Interim Commissioners are to be appointed by the State Government, to effect and facilitate amalgamation as happened in Victoria, approximately 20 years ago, it would be imperative that the Cooma Monaro Shire Council status and standing regarding water “entitlement” be recognized

and protected. Foreseeable future expansion of residential and other corridors of the ACT (and beyond) would justify clarification of these present concerns. Secondly ,this is a community and a region where all of us, including our politicians and their delegates could benefit from local expertise to understand the historical, engineering, contractual, environmental and feasibility integrity of current arrangements. Is the local expertise being used? Has it been sought? Thirdly, during my recent visit to Victoria, two Melbourne based colleagues lamented the loss of capacity, service, integrity and competence of particular local government authorities in relation to conveyancing matters. My friends’ concerns were that the last bastion of competence and professional adjudication had been lost, since amalgamation was mandated in Victoria, and that the local level of skilling and service has been forfeited, without remedy or redress. Definitively this is the moment for our local community to voice sincere concerns about amalgamation proposals. Even if these concerns are not sustainable under the mandates and policies of our present NSW State Government, we have learned to love our questions…. Elizabeth Laught Cooma

Don’t amalgamate councils Editor, I am writing to voice my strong opposition to Local Government amalgamation. We are hearing the reason for this idiotic decision is to improve efficiency. Within reason we are not looking to efficiency for Local Government. Local Government is applicable (to our local area), adaptable (to local needs), accessible (how many of us know personally and can actually talk to Local Councillors and/or staff from the local bureaucracy),

our new Kindies who start their journey of learning with Miss Goodman. We wish them all a wonderful start and warmly welcome all new and returning parents to our school. It is very important to have open communication between home and school to ensure a strong working partnership exists. Our school has always promoted an ‘open door’ policy and we welcome your input.

It was great to see so many parents at the pool for our swimming carnival on Monday, February 1. We would like to say a huge thank you to those parents who turned up, not only to support their children and other students, but also to volunteer their time as timekeepers to ensure our carnival ran smoothly for all involved. Congratulations to Killarney as the overall house winners of a very tightly contested carnival.

is still the potential for the introduction of diseases such as vibrio from bulls or ovine brucellosis from rams. Weed seeds and disease agents can be spread in dirt and manure on livestock, or on the vehicles in which they are transported, and even on the boots of the people accompanying them. Biosecurity may sound frightening, however for most producers, it just means taking simple steps to protect the health and productivity of their livestock. First, when purchasing new cattle or sheep use an Animal Health Statement (AHS) in conjunction with National Vendor Declarations and waybills. These are valuable tools which provide detailed records of the prior health of the livestock and any veterinary treatments received, as well as the disease status of the regions they have been moved from. And if you are the vendor of livestock, providing an AHS will give buyers confidence in the health of your animals. Step two is quarantining all new cattle or sheep when they first arrive at the property. Keep them in a yard or holding paddock with good quality feed for the first 48 hours to empty out and drop any weed seeds they may be carrying in coat Wednesday 6 April 2016 or faeces. Finance Consultant Whatever your home loan requirements, let me find the best solution for you!

New year, new opportunities! Here we are again, with Christmas & New Year holidays becoming a distant memory, and getting back into normal routines. This year looks to be an interesting one, with mixed expectations around the financial situation, and what interest rates are going to do. Time will tell! In the meantime, the world revolves, and people continue to buy and sell properties. With so many things to consider when looking at taking out a home or investment property loan, it makes sense to speak to someone who has the experience, and the resources to compare different options for you. Whether to fix, or not to fix? Whether you can afford that dream home just yet? Whether you can use the equity in your home to buy that investment property, or finance the new car you need? These are all question I can help you answer. As everyone has a different situation, I offer a personal approach, and take into consideration your circumstances. If your Bank has said no, that doesn’t mean they all will. Banks have different policies & criteria. Let me help you work out the best option for you. So whether buying, or just wanting to review your existing loan, please call me for an obligation free appointment now. It could save you money, and change your life! Call me on mobile 0431 351 873.

NEWS

Wednesday February 10, 2016

Riposte Lisa Ashurst I never thought the anti Barbie Doll minority would ever gain any real traction in their rabid campaign against this doll so I was stunned to see a snippet on the news recently which stated that Barbie was to undergo an overhaul to her looks, citing pressure from claims that the doll encouraged body image issues in little girls prompting the decision. I kid you not. Personally, I suspect whoever began this campaign had way too much time on their hands and possibly a few other

issues as well. The Barbie Doll is an icon which has long outlasted many of the other teenage dolls that went in and out of production during her reign and is why she is still as popular today as she was when she made her debut. Little girls absolutely love their Barbies but here’s the kicker; none of the little girls I grew up with who had Barbie Dolls ever said they wanted to look just like their dolls when they grew up. Nor did they spend time in front of a mirror comparing themselves to their Barbie Dolls and wishing they had her proportions. They did not waste their youth clocking up hours on an analyst’s couch over Barbie-related body images and if the responses I got on a recent whip around several women I

know are anything to go by, none of them ever felt threatened, body wise, by a doll, Barbie or otherwise. Like me, they cannot fathom how a doll can be blamed for young girls’ body image issues and are stunned by the move to alter Barbie’s looks. So it was a resounding “Are they insane???” to the wowsers. Okay, so did anything cause them any degree of angst over their looks growing up? Well yes, the most popular girls in the school. Every high school has at least one (but more often a tight little group) of these overly-blessed-by-Mother-Nature girls so forget Barbie, the models in the glossies, actresses and popular celebrities; the most looks-related issues amongst young girls in general seemed to stem from comparing themselves to those schoolyard goddesses and feeling left on the sidelines in the looks department. But to get back on topic, when it’s all said and done, the Barbie Doll is a toy. Children know the difference between toy and real. What I haven’t heard a whisper about though is young boys being “negatively influenced” into having body image issues as a result of playing with action man figures. Why haven’t the wowsers picked up on those square-jawed, overly-muscled, six-pack packing boy dolls? Boys can develop body image issues just as girls can so why have GI Joe and others of his ilk been given a pass? Perhaps the wowsers are all overly-issued women who are too focused on hating Barbie to develop perceived issues with action man toys. Could that then be perceived as a form of discrimination? Like, girls’ image issues are far more important or something...? Or is it just that they haven’t got around to making any wild accusations about boys getting all het up over trying to physically emulate their action man figures the way they insist girls do over their Barbie Dolls? Dragging their feet a bit there aren’t they? But seriously, we are talking dolls here.

TWO SECRETARY POSITIONS Last and Maxwell Solicitors are looking for two highly-motivated and enthusiastic people for full time administrative support and computer-related secretarial duties in each of their Cooma and Jindabyne offices. Each position will be the point of reference for all queries, requests or issues and will be an integral part of the firm’s workforce.

AGED CARE FACILITY

Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre did not escape the millions of tiny black bugs that invaded Cooma earlier this year. The bugs seem to find their way into any space that had strong night lights, such as the entry to the Home. Although they seemed to be a pest their presence became a great conversation starter as everyone attempted to identify them and wonder at what possessed them to all land at the facility. Our wonderful handy men, Peter and Lee, had some much appreciated help of a few guys to assemble the new shelving kits. Allen, Dickie and his son turned the recreation room into a mini men’s shed and were very soon hard at work. The shelves arrived as flat packs and will be used in the maintenance shed. Thank you for your assistance. The gentlemen at SWHMC are a handy group with Bill loving to turn his hand to the maintenance and care of the garden beds that are visible through the resident’s room on

the top side of the facility. The enjoyment that he has from the garden is nothing compared to the joy the others are receiving from watching the flowers bloom and the strawberries grow over the last months. Bill’s gardening talents are not limited to the beds outside, he also has a collection of tubs in the courtyard that he is growing tomatoes in. The SWHMC annual fete will be held Sunday 3rd of April. Make a note of the date in your calendar as we would love you to join us. If you would like to help on the day, donate cakes or any garden plants please contact our front office on 6452 3588. During January Edna celebrated her birthday, she decided to invite everyone to join her by declaring the day “Crazy Hair Day”. Edna coloured her hair pink and set the challenge for everyone to have a bit of fun with her. The carers either wore silly hats or made their hair into unusual shapes and pigtails soon became mega tails. Edna was joined by her family for lunch in The Bradman Room to top off a very special day for a special lady. During January Sir William Hudson Memorial Centre welcomed five new residents and sadly farewelled the following residents; Shirley Rolfe, Aleksander Szot, and Maree Gutterson who has returned to live at home

Can you handle the buckjump? The Monaro and Snowy Mountains regions are well renowned for producing some great horsemen and some fantastic rough stock riders, with a select few going on to achieve fame and fortune on the rodeo circuit. Because the Cooma Rodeo Committee are keen to let locals compete in front of their home crowd, they are holding a special event aimed at all local stockmen. A highlight of the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, the Poley Buckjump is a chance for local competitors to step up to the plate and try their luck. With $500

prize money and lots of prestige on offer, some of the best rough riders in the district will be entered. The Poley Buckjump is a unique event at the CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo as it enables competitors to compete in the saddles they ride in every day; as long as it is either a stock or fender saddle. And of course extra points are always awarded if the competitor can crack a stock whip whilst the bronc is in full flight! For more information on anything else to do with the 2016 CRT Cooma Rural Rodeo, visit the Rodeo Website www.coomarodeo.org.au.

Cooma ladies golf Whilst the rest of us were struggling with the heavy, damp conditions, Marilynne Weston encountered no such problems and recorded a pleasing score of 18 points in the Summer Cup on January 30. Her driving and fairway shots were finding the middle of the fairways, and her putting was on song! Balls were won by Lorraine McGregor, 14 points, and Yvonne Barnes, 13 points on a countback. Lorraine also had Nearest The Pin on the fourth, second shot. In the Sisters’ nine-hole Stableford last Wednesday the heavy, damp conditions once again prevailed but tricky pin placements were also set to test our mettle Lorraine McGregor was the winner with 14 points. Clare Nowland was the runner-up with 13 points on a countback. Balls were won by Carolyn O’Byrne, Robin Fletcher, both

13 points and Gaye Wilson, 12 points on a countback. Gaye also had Nearest The Pin on the ninth with her second shot (she was not amused to see it strike the cup and run all the way off the green!). Saturday February 6 Only four starters – Barney, Marty, Kerry and Ross T. Weather was sunny and the wind was poor so the start was delayed. Eventually racing got underway around 3.30pm in a light breeze of 2-3knots with some gusts at 5-6. It was coming mainly from the north. The curse was starboard, starting from the Bay mark and consisted of two sausages to and from the Peninsular mark. Barney crossed the line first in 49 minutes with Marty second at 60 minutes, then Ross, then Kerry. Adjusted times saw Barney relegated to fourth with the others in the same order.

Monaro cricket heats up with the finals on the horizon The great West Indies sides used to say ‘whatever you bowl us out for, we’ll bowl you out for less’. With the sun finally shining over the Monaro, Jindabyne and Dalgety travelled to Nimmitabel for the first game on the ground in 22 years. The wicket looked pretty good and Jindabyne had no hesitation in batting first. Just 29 overs later, the decision looked a poor one with Simon Freebody taking 5/12 and Ed Hogan 3/24 to knock the Tigers over for a mere 62 in an innings bereft of batting highlights, barring Tom Condon getting off the mark with a six in his second game of senior cricket. Dalgety were feeling pretty confident in the run chase and Jindabyne needed some early wickets and a bit of luck to be any hope. Lucas Rixon (2/8) put in for Jindy, grabbing two quick wickets in the second over, and when Hind (4/10) got Hogan out in the fifth over, the game was up in the air with Dalgety limping at 3 for 5. Iain Elliot (15) and Freebody (13) batted smartly and patiently to put the Dalgety boys in a decent position at drinks at 3/31. Chad Stevens (1/12) got the breakthrough knocking over Elliot after drinks and some good death bowling from Dale Cook (2/2) saw Jindy get the win by three runs. A big thank you to the Nimmitabel Hotel, Aron Rogers and the Nimmitabel Men’s Shed for putting on a great day and seeing cricket return to an old stomping ground. Berridale played The Aussie at Berridale and elected to bat on a slow outfield. The Aussie got off to a steady start and reached 29 runs before James Cahill (3/30) got the breakthrough. Chris Khoury (41) joined Stuart Wood (29) at the crease and the pair looked to up the run rate. Declan Gregory (3/53)

leaked some early runs but hit back strongly to rip the heart out of the Aussie middle order, putting them at 4/81 at drinks. The Khoury brothers steadied The Aussie’s innings and and were looking very comfortable before Matthew Bruce took a screamer of a catch to dismiss the dangerous Chris Khoury. With The Aussie sporting a very large tail, a captain’s knock was needed and Kaeliff Khoury delivered with 41 not out. The Aussie tail frustrated the Berridale bowling attack and, with a few missed chances, they managed to post a very healthy 176 all out. Berridale started poorly, with a run out in the first over. The Bruce brothers steadied the ship before Stuart Wood (4/28) tore through the Berridale batting line-up. Lee Halam (34) gave Berridale a small sniff of an unlikely victory with several lofty blows, but the wily legspin bowling of Damien Asanovski (3/31) eventually found the mark and the tail folded fairly quickly to see Berridale all out for 116. The victory for The Aussie keeps their finals hopes alive for another week, and makes it difficult for Berridale to crack the semis come the business end of the season. Coffey’s played Peak View Jerangle at Rotary in the inaugural day-nighter. Nick Moon, despite his recent run of good form, was unable to win the toss and PVJ elected to bat with the sun shining in a glorious afternoon for cricket. The Coffey’s bowlers rose to the challenge

and the fielding side delivered one of their best performances of the year. Andrew Hayden was throwing down bullets and looked to return to Monaro Cricket in all his former glory, however an unfortunate injury sustained in his second over brought Jacob Moon in to the attack. Moon, having removed the mystery ball from his armoury, was backed up well by Nowland and the pair made runs hard to come by for the PVJ batsmen. Starved for runs, PVJ tried to force a single on the lightning arm of Nick Chapman, and backed by some handy glove work from Zach Smith, a run out ensued, followed by cries of ‘no single on that arm’. The big hitting Matthew Moxon looked threatening as he patiently chipped away at the loose ball and looked to up the run rate for PVJ. The introduction of Coffey’s spin doctors Mark Williams and Nathan Thompson again dried up runs, and Thompson looked to have the ball on a string, bowling four maidens in a row. Moxon was eventually outdone for lack of pace by Williams with Nick Moon taking an absolute screamer in the outfield, and the introduction of Pistol Pete Woodall kept the pressure and the run rate rising for PVJ. The Iceman Andy Devereux came out with the catch of the day of the day, diving forward, fully out stretched off his own bowling to dismiss James Ewart. Luke Thompson looked in superb touch with the bat and was ready to fire, but he was eventually outdone by

the experience of Pistol Pete, slashing at a loose delivery outside off and was out caught at point. With Coffey’s in a great position, PVJ captain Nathan Boate kept a strong head and added some very valuable late runs with youngster Jimmy Hayden to see PVJ all out for 127. Zach Smith and Jimmy Nichols opened the batting for Coffey’s under a setting sun. The formidable PVJ bowling attack made slow going for the Coffey’s batsman but patient batting saw the shine off the new ball. With the smell of sausages wafting across Rotary, Nichols was sent back to the sheds and Thompson joined Smith at the crease before play was suspended for dinner. The two teams then came together for a barbeque and a chat while the lights warmed up and play resumed. Batting under lights proved a unique experience and some batsman handled it better than others. Smith batted well and was backed up by Sommerville and Jacob Moon but continuous economical bowling from the star studded bowling attack of Locker, Ewart, Moxon and Clarke kept the required run rate climbing and the Coffey’s batsmen were all out, 30 runs shy of the total. This weekend Coffey’s will play Berridale at Berridale, Jindabyne play Peak View Jerangle at Nijong 1 and Dalgety play The Aussie at Snowy Oval

Anthony signs with McDonald’s Gilmour Formula 3 team

Christopher Anthony from Cooma has signed on as lead driver with the McDonald’s Gilmour racing team in the Australian Formula 3 for 2016. Christopher boasts a successful karting career, and has already established himself as a highly competitive race car driver. He won the 2013 Formula Ford Championship and won two races at Bathurst in his first season of F3, where he became the youngest ever outright record older at the Mount Panorama Circuit and finished third overall in the Australian F3 Championship. Christopher is looking to expand his

career in Europe and believes that winning the Australian F3 championship would be a pivotal part of his career. Several F3 racing teams showed interest in signing Christopher before he made the decision to commit to the Brisbane based McDonalds Gilmour Racing team. 2016 marks the 13th consecutive season of F3 for the family-owned and run team and team principal Errol Gilmour is excited at having the Cooma youngster on board. ‘I have been following Christopher Anthony’s progress through the various disciplines of open-wheel racing for some time,” he said.

‘Coming from karts and into Formula Ford, I was very impressed with the way he handled the transition and, in fact, won the New South Wales State FF Championship. ‘I remember thinking at the time, Chris had all the attributes to become a toplevel, single-seat racer and hoped he would take the next step, up into F3. He did this, impressing all that watched him race in CAMS Gold Star Australian F3 Drivers Championship that first year, 2014. “In McDonald’s Gilmour Racing, Christopher has a team behind him that has a passion for single-seater racing and one that is dedicated to helping him win the Australian

F3 title, while assisting him towards his ultimate goal of becoming an F1 driver.” Christopher is sponsored by Betta Home Living, BEKO, Bausele Watches Australia, Alan Dodd, Mitre 10 Cooma, Cooma Catering and Hazeldean and he and his family are hoping that, with some additional corporate sponsorship, he will be able to go back overseas to compete in half the GP3 season in Europe. The 7-round 2016 Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship – the fastest racing series in Australia – commences on 3 April at Melbourne’s Sandown Raceway.

Stallions begin training for 2016

First grade coach Todd Williams with an offload to club stalwart Matty Salvestro during a ball drill at last Tuesday’s training. The Cooma Stallions Football Club have begun training with good numbers taking part in the tough preseason roster laid out by first grade coach Todd Williams. Williams believes that fitness will be the key to the Stallions success this year and is focusing on high intensity training as well as getting miles in to the boys’ legs. The recent run of rainy weather and a few changes to training dates caused some confusion amongst players but Williams said he is happy with the turn out so far, and complimented the depth and diversity of his playing squad. “The boys have been getting belted at preseason and they’ve all got good attitudes. “We have a good mix of players so if we keep that we’ll be right,” Williams said. The Stallions have recruited well during the off season with Tim Knight and Kyle High training well so far. The Stallions are also happy to announce the signing of halfback Austin Nunan from Clermont in Queensland who will be in Cooma on the 16th of February. Williams was full of praise for the new players in the club and said they are doing well so far.

“The new blokes are fitting in really well, which is good,” he said. The new recruits join a list of well established Stallions players. Todd Williams and Corey Thomas have been selected in the Group 16 rep side and will play in the Group 16 All Stars vs Aboriginal Dream Team match in Moruya in March, where they will play for selection in the final squad. The Stallions players will not be given the opportunity to get complacent this year, with Williams saying all positions are up for grabs. Stallions president Jason Kelly also complimented the boys on their effort so far and emphasised that they are always welcoming new players. “They’re going really good but we’re always looking for new players, anyone who is keen to come and have a run,” he said. Training for the Stallions is Tuesday and Friday at 5pm at the Cooma Showground until the conclusion of the touch footy competition, when it will revert to Tuesday and Thursday. Anyone who is interested in playing can come to training or contact Jason Kelly on 0421060844.

Cooma Golf Club news The course is currently in fantastic condition due to the recent rain although the heavier than normal grass cover has made scoring hard for most golfers with very few playing to their handicap due to the lack of run. Wednesday’s Stableford was no exception, with Adam Robinson winning A Grade with 35 points, Chris Brown winning B Grade with 40 points in the round of the day and Tony Monday winning C Grade with 35 points. Ball winners were Charlie Beaumont, Mal Crockett, Vic Carroll, John Onur, Warren Bray, Gary Batten, Tim Bedingfeld, Ged Mackay and Brian Searl. Gordon Weston won Nearest the Pin on 17th. Saturday’s Monthly Medal, played off the back tees, saw some very high scores with only one player matching his handicap out of a good field of 44 players. Norm Marshall won the A Grade Monthly Medal with 72 net, the round of the day, from Steve Young on 74 nett. The B Grade Monthly Medal went to Gary Batten who

continued his recent hot steak with 75 nett while Tony Perry was runner up with 76. The C Grade Monthly Medal went to Kerry Blencowe with 75 nett from Tim Dorahy with 78 nett. Balls went to Chris Brown, Dave Douglass, Bob Ashcroft, Jim Caldwell and Steve Wheately. A Grade Long Drive went Christian Stockl, while Charlie Beaumont won B Grade and Tony Monday C Grade. Nearest the Pin on fourth went to John Gargett while Stephen Jermyn was closest on 11. Shot of the day went to Frank McKnight who amazed the gallery on 18 by chipping the ball into a tree root and rebounding it behind his back to safety, avoiding a penalty by somehow missing both himself and his buggy !!! Sunday’s round two of the Thredbo Super Stableford saw the competition played off the white markers (a rare event), making the course almost as short as it could be played. It was quite a novelty for the men who often teed off in front of the

ladies markers and the shorter holes saw scoring a little better. Denis Minehan overcame a shaky start and then benefited from more than his share of good luck to edge out Terry Johnston on a countback with 38 points, followed by new member Damian Walsh with 37. Balls were won by Ged Mackay, Campbell Childs, Vic Carroll, Gary Batten, Frank McKnight, Georg Froeschl, Richard Hanna and Steve Young. Nearest the Pin on nine was won by Steve Young with a shot to within a metre of the pin whilst Jeff Burgess almost went one better when his shot on 17th slid agonisingly by the hole to finish just past to claim Nearest the Pin on that hole. Competitions over the next week will be Stablefords on each of Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget that the ever popular Short Course Championship for men, women and juniors is coming up on Saturday 20 February, where the course is reconfigured for the day to 18 par threes. Book in early to avoid missing out as places are limited.

Cats begin 2016 quest for glory The CCFC Southern Cats have ramped up their 2016 preparations with preseason training starting for the Cooma players last Tuesday. Head coach Ross Henningsen made the trip to Cooma to help put the boys through their motions, where he was assisted by club president Adam Asanovski and Cooma mentor Damien Asanovski. The Cats are coming in to 2016 as serious premiership contenders and training will be an integral part of that. The Cooma players will be training twice a week and there is some good young players coming through the ranks. “We have a good number

of players, but we want more. We’re looking to build on this. “Hopefully we can get some more for this year, or build towards next year, Damien Asanovski said. People who are interested in playing are encouraged to go to training, and the Cats have stressed the point that players don’t have to travel to Canberra to train. “We will be looking to get the Cooma boys to Canberra, but they don’t have to come, Adam Asanovski said. Training is at Snowy Oval oval on Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm and the club is eager to welcome new players or people who want to help out by volunteering.

His race time of 4m40.28s would see him take the Subaru hot-seat from Crimmins. The last rider down the hill was Mudd, who had been the only rider below 4m40s all weekend, and he repeated that stellar feat on his race run recording a time of 4m38.72s. A clearly overjoyed Mudd celebrated his maiden national race winin front of a large and excited crowd. “It’s awesome, it’s my first national series race win. I’ve come close a couple of times, and I’ve also beat my hero Jared Graves which is an accomplishment in itself. Mudd immediately turned to his plans for the year. “I’m racing all of the World Cups from Cairns, I’ve finally finished my apprenticeship so it’s time to focus on the racing. In a great weekend for Mudd he now assumes the series leader title heading into the final round in Toowoomba. In the Elite Women’s seeding, fast runs on the challenging track saw Tegan Molloy (NSW) the fastest rider of the morning by 5.46s from Danielle Beecroft (NSW) and Kellie Weinert (NSW). As in the Men’s racing, seeding would prove a solid form-guide for the final results. Beecroft and Molloy have for a number of years been the two younger riders setting the Australian Elite Women’s downhill scene alight.

Molloy finished with the gold, recording a time of 5m17.32s, finishing 8.46s in front of Beecroft, with Weinert rounding out the podium in third. Molloy spoke of the benefits of racing at home. “It’s always good to win but it’s even better to win on your home track, with all the family up here and my friends supporting me. With good earlyseason form, Molloy has some clear 2016 goals. “I’d like to consistently finish in the top 10 this world cup season. I had a few top 10s last year but this year I’d like to be more consistent, and hopefully make the podium one race. Beecroft’s efforts helped her retain the series lead, she takes a 15 point buffer over Molloy to the final round. In Under 19s action, both Jackson Frew (ACT) and Sian A’hern (NSW) backed up their seeding wins to take the Junior Women & Men’s titles respectively. Ellie Smith (NSW) won gold in the Under 17s women’s race and series leader Patrick Butler (NSW) on top of the podium in the men’s. The day also featured Cross Country Criterium race action at Thredbo’s Friday Flat. In A-grade women’s racing, Olympian Bec Henderson continued her excellent run of form, creating a gap at the end of Lap 2 that she would consolidate on Lap 3. Henderson proceeded to ride away to the win unchallenged. Team-mates Holly Harris (NSW) and Katherine Hosking (NSW) diced for second place throughout the race with Harris eventually claiming the higher step on the podium. In the final race of the day for the criterium, the A-Grade Men, Brendan Johnston (ACT) had a close battle with Tasman Nankervis (VIC), one that would last almost the race duration.
