Cooma Show

The 138th annual Cooma Show was held last Saturday, with a return to normal after two wet years cancelled horse and yard dog events. The show was opened by CEO of Snowy Hydro Southcare, Owen Finegan, who was greeted by a guard of honour comprised of junior rugby union players. A highlight of the show was the performance by the BMX display team, as well as entertainment from Milo the Clown. Pictured, Owen Finegan opens the show, a BMXer high in the sky and the naming sponsor, SERVICE ONE Members Bank team with their show stand.

Cooma Hospital has recently received a new nurse fresh out of university. Kate Fraser attended Wollongong University where she studied Nursing for five and a half years. Ms Fraser has been a local Cooma girl for most of her life and completed her high school education at Monaro High School. “Cooma Hospital was my first preference when I began applying for jobs so I was very lucky.” Almost one quarter of the state’s graduate nurses and midwives have taken up jobs in regional hospitals, a number of which fall in the Monaro electorate. The Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, is travelling around the electorate to meet with some of the 33 graduate nurses who have started work within the Southern NSW Local Health District.

Mr Barilaro said it was encouraging to see graduates opting to start their career in a regional setting. “I met with the new nurse at Cooma Hospital and earlier this week I visited nurses at Queanbeyan Hospital to wish them all the best for a long and fulfilling career,” he said. “Nurses are society’s caregivers. They are there for all of us when we need them most. Their care, comfort and support make a difference in the lives of their patients and families every day.” Over 2000 nurse graduates have accepted positions across a number of NSW public hospitals this year. Currently

there are 46,700 nurses and midwives working in NSW public hospitals. Other nurses have taken up positions locally in Bombala, Braidwood and Goulburn. John Barilaro meeting new Cooma nurse, Kate Fraser, pictured with Cooma Hospital’s managing staff.

demonstrate inspiring and aspiring business journeys. Cooma’s Jane Cay, proprietor of Birdsnest, has been included in the honours this year. At an early age, Jane Cay committed herself to being part of the online revolution. In 1996, the year the internet was becoming mainstream, Jane began her commerce degree at the University of New South Wales, which completely captured her imagination. On completing university, Jane worked as an e-business consultant with IBM, and not long after she fell in love with a farmer and moved to the Snowy Mountains. The move gave her the opportunity to establish Birdsnest – a unique online retail store for women that has proved being independent and in a regional location is no obstacle to online success. Jane loves to live in the slow lane, and work in the fast lane. Her home on the working farm is a 130km round trip for a litre of milk. Birdsnest launched in 2008. Since then it has experienced doubledigit growth; it is within the top 40 most visited

apparel sites in Australia and employs over 90 birds. Working with women on the shop floor, Jane discovered that the notion of retail therapy was real and became passionate about ‘inspiring confidence’ in all her customers. It must be translating, with a big 70% of all Birdsnest revenue coming from return customers. Birdsnest has grown faster than she could have imagined, and she admits that she has made lots of mistakes along the way. Yet, these mistakes have proved to be her best lessons. Jane understands the importance of creating a positive work environment with a strong team culture. She ensures that every new team member understands that they can be generous and have fun with customers, which is something that you have to invest time in. Jane’s Top 5 Strategies for Success: 1. Start by surrounding yourself with the right people who share the dream and compliment your skills (it is even better if they are smarter than you!). It is great if you can all think big together but work with the resources you have, so act small. 2. Understand and become passionate about the problems you are solving for your customers. 3. Always give yourself

time outside the daily running of the business to think outside the box. 4. Be flexible. Embrace all things new and adapt if circumstances change. 5. Have a realistic cash flow budget and monitor it – if you are going to win the game, you’ve got to keep the score (a lesson learnt from my father). “The ABN Hall of Fame was initiated to inspire Australian women with stories of individual success from high-achieving peers. The women we profile serve as role models and mentors for women in all business sectors, encouraging them to realise their business goals.” said ABN CEO Suzi Dafnis. The 2013 ABN Hall of Fame inductees include: Annie Crawford of Cantoo, Carolyn Cresswell of Carmen’s Muesli, Chris Cameron of Rockcote, Gillian Corban of Corban & Blair, Heidi Middleton & SarahJane Clarke of Sass & Bide, Jacqueline Arias or Republica Coffee, Jane Cay of birdsnest. com.au, Janine Allies of Boost Juice, Kris Lloyd of Woodside Cheese Wrights, Lorna Jane Clarkson or Lorna Jane Activewear, Melinda Cruz of Miracle Babies Foundation, Naomi Simpson of Red Balloon, Ronni Khan of OZ Harvest, Shelley Barrett of ModelCo, Trinnette Schipkie of BTB Group and Wendy Simpson of Springboard.

Cooma Universities centre opens

3

Sarah Kleven Significant change only comes about when people have a strong vision and passion to drive it and without Mayor Dean Lynch and Snowy Hydro Chief Executive Terry Charlton’s passion, drive and commitment, the vision of tertiary education in Cooma would not have become a reality. Last Wednesday community leaders came together to witness the launch of a vision that Mayor Dean Lynch believes has the potential to change the town. Cooma has a several education opportunities for students up until secondary or high school level. However options become more limited for tertiary education and within this area many locals have to move away to study or complete degrees by distance education from home. “We needed to complete the picture and it’s always been a passion of mine to get tertiary education in Cooma,” Mayor Dean Lynch said. The Cooma Universities Centre is a high tech facility providing Universitylevel distance education opportunities to students in the Snowy Mountains Region. The centre is a community initiative available to any enrolled undergraduate or postgraduate University student, at any university, studying any course. While the centre is not a university campus, in 2013, any student studying any distance education course can base themselves at the centre and make use of the top of the line PC’s, broadband connection and links to online seminars in the lecture room. It is envisaged that from 2014 universities will run some courses and lectures directly from the centre should there be sufficient interest and support from the local community. There has already been strong interest from several universities including The University of New England, Charles Sturt University, Newcastle University and many others. Mayor Dean Lynch and Snowy Hydro CEO Terry Charlton will continue to promote the project to potential long-term university partners. To register at the Cooma Universities

Mayor Dean Lynch, CUC manager Zoe Dawon and Snowy Hydro CEO, Terry Charlton the official opening of the centre last week. Centre there will be a nominal charge of $90 per semester for distance education students. This will go towards the costs of access cards. However the first 20 students to register will get the first semester of 2013 free of charge! The centre can accommodate 50 – 60 students and has computers for 20 as well as WiFi for another 20. Snowy Hydro has long been involved in the development of tertiary education in the region. For Snowy Hydro to be successful they need the local community within which they are based to thrive as well. The centre will assist Snowy Hydro and other businesses in recruiting highly skilled staff as well as having a significant positive impact on the local community. It will allow students to study locally with their peer group should they wish to, avoiding the need to move away from friends, family and their local community. “We hope this provides an opportunity for people to come to Cooma and to stay here,” explained CEO of Snowy Hydro, Terry Charlton. “We have a role to play in social investments in this town and an investment like this doesn’t come along very often,” Chairman of Snowy Hydro, Bruce Hogan, said. The building will be staffed by the CUC Coordinator Zoe Dawson during normal office hours. Registered students will be able to access the building from 8.30am

to 5pm Monday to Friday during the first semester of 2013. If demand warrants, these times may be extended in second semester to later in the evening and seven days per week if needed. Ms Dawson is based at the CUC and should be the first point of call for all enquiries. Zoe brings more than 15 years experience in the education sector in NSW to the role and will be liaising with local schools and community groups to further promote the CUC across the Snowy Mountains. If this concept is successful and if the community provides the support needed this will highlight the need for a possible full university campus in the Monaro region in the future. If the need and support exists, it is possible that governments of the day will see a full university campus as a positive regional development opportunity. When the Snowy Scheme began 64 years ago, no one would have predicted where they would be today continuing to give to the community in many substantial ways. Snowy Hydro in affiliation with Cooma Monaro Shire Council have made an innovative vision a reality and Cooma needs to make sure they support the Cooma Universities Centre to ensure that it continues to be a success. “I truly believe that this centre has the capacity to change the town,” said Dean Lynch. Gully Gang at it again

Council recently had some encouraging news from SEATS (the South East Australian Transport Strategy Inc) who advised they had discussed various projects for Snowy River Shire at their recent executive meeting. The projects are highlighted in Council’s Community Strategic Plan, and having SEATS offer its support is great news. SEATS can lobby government and advocate its support for the projects. The projects include the completion and sealing of the Bobeyan Road to Canberra which is currently sealed from Snowy Mountains Highway (near Adaminaby to just beyond the Snowy River/Cooma-Monaro Shire border. To complete the sealing of the road, it will only need to be sealed in the Cooma-Monaro Shire and ACT Areas. The complete sealing of the road would provide an alternate route between the Shire and Canberra. There is also a timber bridge on the Bobeyan Road, on the Snowy River and Cooma-Monaro Shire border with a 12 tonne weight restriction. Currently, there is a five year plan to carry out maintenance works and improvements to the bridge although there are no plans to replace the bridge at this stage. The unsealed section of the Barry Way (approximately 11kms) through to the Victorian border within Kosciuszko National Park is classified as a regional road. There is much damage to the road as a result of flooding early last year and although Council has carried out repairs, they mainly consist of stabilising land slips and repairing eroded sections. In places the road width is only 2.5m wide and with its increased use over recent years, works are becoming a priority. Council will keep working with SEATS as well as the RMS and other relevant bodies towards commencement of works on these projects.

The “Gully Gang” – so-called because Pollys Gully Road links two of the local members’ properties – is a group of 16 friends who have been painting together for several years now. Social weekends, during which painting began almost by accident, soon developed into

informal workshops, and eventually led to exhibitions at the Raglan Gallery. The immense enjoyment derived from this shared interest continues to motivate and stimulate each person to pursue individual ideas and to learn more about art and artists in general. Since the 2012 exhibition, Jenny Coopes has held a very successful solo exhibition in Sydney. Locally, Patricia Boisgard and Lesley Henstridge were

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council

Class action update

Councils to recoup some lost investments Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is likely to recover up to $820,000 in lost investment after a Federal Court decision ruled in favour of a class action taken by 12 councils. On March 12013 the Federal Court delivered judgement in relation to the Rembrandt class action and made final orders, summarised as follows: Preliminary advice received from the Court determination is that the Group of 12 Councils (the Applicants) are entitled to damages in the order of $20.3 million. This is estimated to be made up of $15 million to cover their losses at cash out when Rembrandt CPDO fell over and about $5.3 million in interest foregone. These estimates are yet to be confirmed tomorrow by the Court and may be subject to appeal within 14 days before payment is distributed to individual Councils in the Group. Post Judgement interest will accrue from February 21 until the date on which the payment is received from the Respondents. The impact of this latest update for Cooma is estimated as follows: CMSC is entitled to damages in the amount of $2.53 million made up of $ 1,87million for loss at cash out and

interest foregone of $0.66 million. Our class action lawyers indicate that they expect to receive payment of approximately $20. 3 million from the Respondents into their trust account shortly to be distributed amongst 12 councils less attributable litigation funder and risk insurer costs to IMF Australia. Council has been advised that the attributable costs to IMF is approximately $14.2 million. Based on this estimate, the balance of approximately $6.1 million will be distributed to the 12 councils in line with their loss/exposure to Rembrandt CPDO. Council is seeking clarification on the IMF distribution as initial estimates for CMSC payout distribution will be between $760,000 plus attributable legal costs estimated to be about $350,00, which should return council approximately $1.1 to $1.2million and $820,000 net. rating issues in the world, the Australian court judgement vindicates the decision of Cooma-Monaro Shire Council and the other group of Councils to challenge the advice and seek a return of its losses through a class action. This landmark win for the group of Councils comes at a significant cost when involved in high level litigation.

There has been another chapter in the proceedings by a group of NSW councils to recoup losses sustained through negligent and misleading financial advice. By way of background, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council joined 11 other NSW councils (the Group of Councils) in mid-2011 in a class action against investment bank ABN AMRO, ratings agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) and Local Government Financial Services (LGFS) to recoup losses that resulted from negligent misrepresentation to investors. These proceedings involved claims arising from the rating, sale and purchase of a structured synthetic derivative financial product known as a Constant Proportion Debt Obligation (CPDO) and referred to as “Rembrandt series 2006-2/3”. At the time, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council had invested $2 million in this portfolio which was rated by S&P as AAA. Council's loss at cash-out one year later was $1.87 million. Due to the international legal linkages with both ABN AMRO and S&P, the Group of Councils elected to minimise their legal costs by commissioning IMF Australia Limited to underwrite the anticipated costs and high financial risks associated with project management of proceedings and litigation funding and cross-claim costs. On 5 November 2012, the Australian Federal Court found that the rating, among other misrepresentations, was misleading and deceptive and ruled in favour of the Group of Councils’ claim on the face value of the CPDOs, estimated to be in the order of $15 million. This was a landmark win for the Group of Councils. On 4 March 2013, the Federal Court delivered further judgements which were in favour of the Group of Councils’ claims against the above respondents for the entirety of their losses plus costs and interest. The preliminary payment estimate for the Group of Councils is expected to be in the order of $20.3 million, comprising $15 million to cover their losses at cash-out when Rembrandt fell over and $5.3 million in interest foregone. The above estimates are yet to be confirmed by the Court and may be subject to appeal within 14 days before the payments – minus substantial litigation-funder and risk-insurer costs to IMF estimated to be in the order of $14.2 million – are distributed to individual councils. Unfortunately, this mammoth win for the Group of Councils comes at a significant legal cost which is currently being questioned. The highlight of this landmark win for Cooma-Monaro Shire Council and the other councils is that the Australian Federal Court judgement vindicates their decision to challenge the deficient and deceptive advice and seek a return of losses through a class action. The more general community implication of the court findings was that all financial agencies are now directly liable to Australian and other international investors for deficiencies in their ratings. This means that investment banks, for example, are directly liable to investors for their involvement in structuring financial products and procuring their ratings.

No vision in selling parks the

postman calls

It’s good news that Cooma-Monaro Shire will recover some of the money lost in the Rembrandt investment debacle of couple of years ago. While much of the reimbursed funds will go towards legal costs, at least council will get something back. Who knows, it might be enough to enclose the Cooma swimming pool? Well done to all the hard working volunteers who made the Cooma Show happen again this year. Like all community organisations, the show depends on the generosity of time and spirit of volunteers to survive. The Postman is pretty certain that more people would be welcome to join the show committee - many hands make light work and new ideas keep the event fresh. Incidentally, there were a couple of purses handed in at the show. Anyone who has lost one should contact the show committee 6452 6465. Don’t forget the annual Wellbeing Expo is on again this Saturday. You can buy health foods, crystals, etc, or seek advice from a range of people, including clairvoyants. Come to think of it, the latter should know you’re going to look them up and be ready for you. Our Lisa Ashurst has a bit of a grumble about Telstra today - see right. She is not alone. Local businesses last Wednesday were thrown into pandemonium when Eftpos and ATM ‘went down’ for about 12 hours. The Monaro Post is hoping to speak to Telstra, as soon as they return our calls.

Editor, Who had the brainwave in Council Chambers to sell (flog) land, Parks, Playgrounds, etc.? Who has given Council the mandate to contemplate such an idea? Is Council not bound by our Constitution? I was under the impression that a mandate is required as the land basically belongs to the Rate Payers, the people are sovereign in my view. If the forefathers had the same principles there would not be a skerrick of land left for future generations, they however had the foresight and planned ahead and we are the beneficiaries and inherit

their legacy today in well established parks, football fields, reserves including garbage tips ,Quaries etc. So by what right does the Council justify such ill-conceived actions without regard to the present and future generations? It seems to me that whoever thought of selling Council land has dollar signs as blinkers, just as happens in our Parliaments both State and Federal. What sort of Budget process does the Council go through, if the only way it can improve our Parks, Playgrounds etc., is to sell some of these valuable community assets off? Artur Baumhammer Peak View, NSW 2630

Riposte Lisa Ashurst I think I must be having one of those “happy accidents” that my hippie pal in Sydney refers to sometimes. At least that’s what I’m telling myself right now, on the off chance he’s right, because otherwise I’d be planning the grizzly death of every Telstra employee even vaguely involved with my non-connection to the internet. In case you’re wondering, a “happy accident” is when something which appears to be devastating at the time turns out to be something positive somewhere down the track and you find yourself thinking “Well wasn’t that a lucky break!” I’m seriously trying here but I haven’t found the positive bit yet and I’m definitely not feeling the luck. Anyway, the “happy accident” in this instance concerns what should have been a simple task that has turned into the mother of all dramas as my provider (who uses Telstra’s network) has tried repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, to activate my internet. First the order was rejected on the grounds that there was no service. Then it came to light that there was and it was called ADSL1! So my order was re-submitted but was rejected again for some other reason which was never made clear. Then sometime later my provider not only got the OK, but also a definite activation date and I was ecstatic but come the activation date, nothing happened. Being the second promised date that had come to zilch I contacted Telstra’s head office and was told that not only was ADSL1 definitely available

to me… I was already connected to it! Well this was news to me and it sure was news for the woman on the other end of the telephone when I informed her that I most definitely was not! Nevertheless, I went back to my provider to chase up the order (again!) which resulted in a tentative date but still no explanation (or apology for that matter!) from Telstra regarding the empty promises and the constant delays. Well it’s been three frustrating months now of getting absolutely nowhere so I’ve pulled the plug. I’m not blaming my provider because it tried it’s damnedest but it just wasn’t worth the stress in the end, but if I could crawl through the telephone line and personally throttle the Telstra customer service people who kept telling me “You need to speak to your provider”, the Telstra wholesale section who rarely bothered to respond to my provider’s regular emailed enquiries and the Telstra technicians who just couldn’t be bothered checking it out properly at the exchange in the first place before claiming there was no internet available to me when very clearly there is, then there would be a lot of dead Telstra staff cluttering up their floor space! So now I’m sans internet indefinitely and am wondering if the “happy” thing could be kicked off a little sooner with a few swigs of something a lot stronger than tea or coffee and at what point down the track I will feel I had a lucky break? Telstra has sure had one though because I can’t get my *&%$#!@ hands on them!

New registrar at Cooma Courthouse After working in over 20 different local court systems over 33 years, Rhonda Brenager is very excited to return to the country to settle down in her appointment as the new Registrar at Cooma Local Court. She is taking up the position vacated by long serving Registrar Brian Donnelly. After spending the last six years working in Byron Bay Ms Brenager started up in her new position at Cooma Local Court on Monday February 25. Lucky for Ms Brenager, with her far from static job, she thoroughly enjoys meeting new people and exploring new places. Growing up in the rural North West of NSW on her family’s farm, she says that she’s definitely a country girl at heart and

was looking forward to coming back to a rural community. Her first weeks in Cooma were spent familiarising herself with the area and with her job but most of all adjusting to the climate, which is quite different to that of Byron Bay. “Winter is going to be a bit of a shock,” she laughed. As well as being the Registrar, Ms Brenager is also an assistant coroner and a marriage registrar. “My role is very diverse. I’ll be providing the same Registrar service as any other local court in NSW. However what I can bring to this court is the experience of 33 years in the same job. “My job is fantastic because I really love helping people. At the end of the day

it’s nice to say you’ve been able to help someone. The other great part of my job is that I learn something new everyday. I really enjoy the variety of the job,” she explained. Ms Brenager is also an avid gardener and knows how much of a challenge gardening will be in this climate but claims she is keen for the challenge of using different plants more suited to this area. In the next few weeks Ms Brenager is looking forward to meeting more people from the local community and exploring the area further. This country girl has clearly found a home in our local community and says that for now she is here indefinitely.

Youth of the Year Quest with one student being chosen to move on to the zone judging level. Louisa Wall of Year 12 achieved the club winner for the public speaking section, the runner up was Cheyenne Lawler of Year 11 and the overall winner for the Cooma Lions Club Youth of the Year Quest 2013 was Larissa McElroy of Year 11. The competition has several levels of judging which test different aspects such as leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. The first step is a written application that outlines achievements and involvement at school and within the wider community. The next step involves a detailed interview, questions with the judges and public

speaking including two impromptu questions requiring up to two minutes in response and a five-minute prepared speech. The impromptu questions and prepared speeches were given in front of the full Cooma Lions Club meeting which is not an easy task especially for people of their age. Larissa then moved on to the next level of judging in Bega where she contested with two Year 12 students from Bega and the Sapphire Coast and another Year 11 student from Jindabyne. Although Larissa did not win at this stage the judges were highly impressed by the quality of the candidates and said that any of the students would have been worthy winners. The judges added that the prepared

speeches were of the highest standard they had ever encountered at a zone final. Larissa’s speech was called ‘never give up’ and she spoke about successful people who had never given up. The three Monaro High School girls were presented with their certificates at Monaro High School last Thursday. “It was hard, but it was a very good experience,” Larissa said. Chris Reeve’s and Monaro High School organiser Richard Moser stressed the importance of this competition to students in the region and encourage any high school student to participate next year. Congratulations to Larissa for representing Cooma with such distinction and to all the contestants for their impressive efforts.

Local store switches to Betta business There is a new look for local business Cooma Betta Home Living, formerly Cooma Retravision. The business, operated by the Anthony family for more than 50 years, is looking forward to the rebranding and also being part of the largest independent buying group in Australia. Betta Home Living has more than 200 stores as part of its family. Cooma store manager George Anthony said the switch to Betta had been made to benefit customers. “We now have access to more brands, better pricing and still with good customer service at the heart of it all”. Mr Anthony said his business had been part of Retravision for about 22 years, but had felt the need to change to a more vibrant, progressive buyers’ group. The store, in Sharp Street, Cooma, will be rebadged in the next week, with a new catalogue full of specials out at present. This new stage is part of the business’ evolution over the past 50odd years. The business was started by Andrew Anthony when he bought what was then the International Club. He had come to Cooma in 1956 to start work with the Snowy. He returned to Cyprus, where he married his wife Mary, but soon returned to Cooma. In 1959, Mary joined him and their family, Pam, Kay, Tony George and Chris were all born in Cooma. All five children have worked in the

business at some time, but Kay, Tony and George have remained. Over the years the business has been known as the Cooma Bargain Centre, the Discount King and from 1991, Retravision Cooma. Apart from the family involvement in the store, there are also several longterm employees who are part of the Betta family. Chris, Troy, Colin, Julie, Robbie and Jenny between them have about 50 years service to the business. This means they have the customer service and important product knowledge to assist customers. This includes arranging interestfree payment plans, co-ordinating deliveries, offering advice on the right product. Local shoppers have no need to travel further than Cooma to find the product they want at the price they want to pay. Community support One of the pleasures of being a local business for the Anthony family, is being able to support local organisations. The store is a major sponsor of both rugby union and rugby league, as well the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul’s, MCCR, Cooma Hospital and several other groups. George and Tony Anthony said they are pleased to put back into their community and appreciate the loyal customers they have attracted over the years, which enables them to do so.

More money for community transport Community transport services in the Monaro electorate will share in more than $93,000 in NSW Government funding, the Member for Monaro John Barilaro said. The funding will go towards providing safe and reliable transport for those who can’t access regular services in areas including Bombala, CoomaMonaro, Queanbeyan, Snowy River, Bega Valley, Palerang and Yass Valley. Organisations to receive the funding are Bombala Community Transport, Snowy-River CoomaMonaro Community Transport, Bega Valley Community Transport and Yass Home Living Support. “This Government is committed to supporting community transport and recognises the integral role community transport providers play in helping residents overcome barriers to access,” Mr

Barilaro said. “Through funding community transport, we can make sure people who cannot drive themselves have access to their local community and essential services and ensure they don’t feel cut off or isolated from their community.” The NSW Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian, said the NSW Government has increased its funding to Community Transport Projects by $2 million dollars this financial year. “Overall, this Government has committed to increasing funding for Community Transport by $12 million over four years,” Minister Berejiklian said. “This funding boost shows that the NSW Government is working with local communities to provide modern, comfortable, safe and accessible transport options.”

SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING – 25 MARCH 2013 A special Cooma-Monaro Shire Council meeting to consider the draft LEP will be held on Monday, 25 March 2013 at council chambers, commencing at 6.00pm. It is anticipated the business paper for this meeting will be available on council’s website at www.cooma.nsw.gov.au from Wednesday, 20 March 2013. Please note there will be no ‘Open Forum’ at this special meeting.

Council wishes to advise that blackberry bushes have been chemically controlled on roadsides throughout the Cooma-Monaro Shire. The effect of chemical application on these plants is not immediate and it may take some weeks before the plants begin to wilt. Residents should NOT eat blackberries growing on roadsides or other public lands. Blackberries are a declared noxious weed within Cooma-Monaro Shire. All land managers are required to effectively manage infestations and various chemicals are registered for this purpose. Please always check with the land manager/owner where blackberries are growing before eating or gathering the fruit. Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced people to join the Cooma-Monaro Region Economic Development Task Force. The task force, once formed, will be asked to devise a long-term strategic plan and options for the economic development of the shire within the Cooma-Monaro region, reporting to council within a six-month timeframe. Background Prior to and following the community-based Integrated Planning and Reporting (IP&R) process of 2011/2012, there was significant and speculative discussion in the business and general community concerning the potential for economic development in Cooma and the region. In particular, discussion focused on the professional process that Cooma-Monaro Shire Council should undertake to achieve a balance between issues such as quality of life, conserving our environment, sustainable infrastructure, economic development and employment opportunities. Naturally, these processes must be undertaken in line with the State Government’s planning guidelines and the strategic community plans as identified in the IP&R process. Council’s strategic objective is to encourage and facilitate population and enterprise growth in the local and regional areas, with Cooma as the regional centre. To this end, council is seeking expressions of interest from individuals and stakeholder interests with the skills and experience to contribute to the task force and its aims. Further details and an EOI information package can be obtained by phoning Lee Evans on 6455 1706. Expressions of interest should be lodged with the undersigned by close of business Friday, 22 March, 2013:

Cooma Showground repairs completed Repair work on the concrete surface adjacent to the bar area at the Cooma Showground was completed in time for the Cooma Show. The system used to replace the damaged areas is called Stencilcrete – the same system used when the area was sealed originally. When using the Stencilcrete system, the concrete is laid as normal after which the stencil of choice is laid over the top; the colour of choice is then hand-applied over the stencil and worked into the concrete. The stencil is then removed creating a paved look finish. The colour used was terracotta and will, in time, blend in with the surrounding area.

Paula Boer Paula Boer started her lifelong love of horses when she first rode a pony on a ranch in Canada, aged 7. On moving to England at age 9, she commenced weekly riding lessons and became hooked. Her horse infatuation led to Paula’s bedroom being filled with toy stables, posters of golden stallions, horse gear and, of course, horse books. Her books included non-fiction works as well as novels, most notably Elyne Mitchell’s The Silver Brumby series. Paula’s own writing career started at Tonbridge Girls Grammar School, where she wrote a story from the horse’s perspective for her final English exam. Despite friends and teachers exclaiming that the story was not appropriate as it didn’t contain any people, Paula passed her English Language ‘O’

level with an A+! Further inspiration provided by The Silver Brumby books contributed to Paula’s emigration to Australia at age 28. Then a computer professional, Paula still lived her life around horses as well as her other passion, travel. Able to combine her two loves, she raced the native horses in Mongolia, climbed the heights of Colombia on horseback, and competed in Endurance rides around Australia. She claims the best way to see a place is from the back of a horse. Although not always on horseback, Paula has travelled in sixty countries on six continents. After retiring from the hectic life of consultancy, she wrote her first novel, The Okapi Promise, based on her own adventures in Africa in 1990. This fictional memoir was published by IFWG Publishing in

November 2010. From her own experiences of catching and breaking in brumbies, and remembering how much she loved reading The Silver Brumby series as a youngster, Paula decided to set her next novel in the Snowy Mountains of NSW. The Brumbies series was created– the first two books, Brumbies and Brumbies in the Snow, were published in 2011 and 2012 respectively (again by IFWG Publishing). Brumbies has since become an Amazon ‘Best Seller’. Brumbies in the Mist will be available mid 2013. Paula has had numerous short animal stories published in journals in the UK and has had a true horse story accepted for a charitable anthology being released in the US later this year (in support of the wild horses of America). She is also a regular contributor to horse magazines, especially HorseWyse, covering topics such as how to take your horse camping, how to get a horse fit and the thrills of mustering in the

outback. During 2012, Paula once again hit the road and drove around Australia with her husband. They spent 8 months working on a cattle station in Far North Queensland while Paula wrote Brumbies in the Outback. Now back home (where she lives on 500 acres with her husband, two Arabians, a Waler and a stickloving dog), Paula is working on the final in the series, Brumbies in the Mountains.

Peer support at Jindabyne Central Each week on a Thursday morning, six groups of students from Year 7 and Year 10 gather in the courtyard of the school to participate in the Peer Support program under the watchful eye of the co-ordinator, Ms Linda Millington. At the end of Year 9, students are invited to train as leaders and mentors for the students beginning in Year 7 the following year. Ninety students this term are involved in the program which has a focus on the many aspects of school life in a fun

and relaxed environment. Some of these include: communication, networking, setting their own rules, social skills, acknowledging individuals’ differences, mixing with students across the age groups, and most importantly working together. Amongst the many anticipated outcomes of program is to avoid bullying. Ms Millington said “The program works well in a central school, largely because the majority of children know one another well because of being at the one school throughout their

15

school lives.” Amongst the “one liner” comments received from the students about the program were: “the leaders are awesome”; “great getting to know each other” and “get to hand out with Year 10.” The Banana Dance is a favourite with the students involved in the Peer Support program at Jindabyne Central School

Dancers have sights set on the big time Two young girls from Cooma Dance Co. have big things in their sights, both attending workshops in Sydney to fuel their performing talent. Jessica Lee at 14 years old attended a Youth Summer Drama Workshop for 14 -15 year olds from January 14 to 18. The course ran at Waverly College of Performing Arts in Sydney with 8 attendees. The aim of the course was to improve the acting skills of the students and their confidence on stage. “It was easier to come out of your shell because you didn’t know anyone,” Said Jessica. The course worked to improve both individual and team skills with a group performance in front of parents at the end of the week with the theme

‘mirror mirror’. The workshop was taught by many big acting names and former NIDA students, even including actors starring in TV shows such as Underbelly. Another senior student from Cooma Dance Co., Lia Venola also attended a hip-hop workshop in Canberra on January 23 and 24. “I learnt all about musicality and how to dance to different parts of the song. They taught us that we can dance to any song we just have to find the rhythm.” The main teacher was Alvin DeCastro, one of Australia’s most recognised urban choreographers who has appeared on shows such as ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

he has also recently toured with Australian Idol Winner, Stan Walker and featured as a dancer on season two of “X-Factor” Australia. Lia would like to continue dancing in the future either professionally or simply just as a hobby as it is clear she has a love for dance. Lia teaches Hip-Hop and Zumba to junior classes at Cooma Dance Co. The senior girls from Cooma Dance Co. appear to have great talent in all performing areas, so watch out for these local girls, destined to be a hit in the performing world. Right: Jessica Lee.

Sitting quietly in his room in an old people's home, Allan Karlsson is waiting for a party he doesn't want to begin. His one-hundredth birthday party to be precise. The Mayor will be there. The press will be there. But, as it turns out, Allan will not . . .Escaping (in his slippers) through his bedroom window, into the flowerbed, Allan makes his getaway. And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving a suitcase full of cash, a few thugs, a very friendly hot-dog stand operator, a few deaths, an elephant and incompetent police. As his escapades unfold, Allan's earlier life is revealed. A life in which - remarkably - he played a key role behind the scenes in some of the momentous events of the twentieth century.

Hazard reduction burns in Bombala region The Forestry Corporation of NSW (formerly Forests NSW) plans to conduct a hazard reduction burns program south and east of Bombala starting on Sunday depending upon weather conditions. Forestry Corporation regional manager, Mark Chaplin, said the burns would be conducted in Bondi State Forest (near Bombala), Craigie State Forest (near Delegate) and Towamba State Forest (near the township of Towamba).

“Sunday saw the start of a burns program in these pine plantations that will run through to May and involve just under 1000 hectares,” he said. “The current hazard reduction burning program is vital to reduce the threat of a bad fire season in future years. “The burning program is carried out from autumn through to early winter when the weather is milder and fire behaviour is more manageable and predictable.

“The burning program will mostly take place in areas that have been recently harvested to remove fuels such as leaves and small limbs from logging residues. “When the burns are conducted we will have the appropriate staff and equipment on hand.” Mr Chaplin said this year’s program would build on the burning program completed last year. “While a number of areas are planned for hazard

reduction burning each year, not all planned burns are carried out,” he said. “The actual conducting of burns depends on getting the right combination of weather and fuel moisture, and with having the appropriate resources on hand. “Burning is strategically planned to provide a mosaic of different fuel loads across the region and to reduce fuel loads adjacent to rural communities.” Mr Chaplin said further broad scale burns were also planned as part of a coordinated program involving the Rural Fire Service and National Parks and Wildlife Service, as well as cooperation from cross border fire fighting agencies.

To celebrate Harmony Day and our cultural diversity; MAGIC (Multicultural Activity Group In Cooma) is presenting the Multicultural Community Festival 2013 on March 17 in Centennial Park in Cooma. There will be lots of music and dancing from around the world including the Night Café, Zambezi Rhythmus, Quake Bellidance, Mexico Lindo,

Grand Piano for Jindabyne hall gets nearer to reality The Grand Piano project (which started mid-2011) is about to become reality, to the delight of many of our community members who are keen to see the Grand Piano installed in the Jindabyne Memorial Hall for the enjoyment of all, for many years to come. Thanks to two past fundraising concerts, donations from the community, sale of keys to individuals and businesses, various sponsorships, and some funding recently pledged, approximately $14,400 has been raised so far. After many weeks trying a number of Grand Pianos in both Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne - we have now found the perfect Grand Piano for the Jindabyne Hall! The total cost of the project (including the Grand Piano, a piano stool and cover, a riser, plaques, etc…) is estimated at more than $20,000. We are asking the community and local businesses to please help fund the shortfall.

Piano Keys can be ‘purchased’ for $100 and $150. Major sponsors are also sought. You may know someone who has a piano stool or a grand piano cover in good condition they are able to donate. We need to acquire the Grand Piano and have it delivered before May, as there is a major fundraising concert scheduled for the first week in May, which requires the use of a Grand Piano. This local project will greatly benefit the Snowy region community. Any contribution towards this worthwhile project would be greatly appreciated. All major sponsors will have their names engraved on a commemorative plaque to be displayed in the Jindabyne Memorial Hall. If you can help, please contact Antoinette Braeder - 0428 118 908 or Carole Thomas 0412 884 304.

YOU Prosper

SMSF is taking over the world!

GREAT FAMILY HOME $265,000 This solid brick, rendered home is located in a family friendly area, and would make a fantastic new home.

According to the ATO’s most recent SMSF bulletin, 3,000 SMSFs are being established every month, that’s 100 daily and around 4 every hour! WHY? Because people are sick of their financial future going backwards in Super Funds and they want to take control of their own destiny. Makes perfect sense to me. Why trust someone else with your money and importantly your financial future. We see it every day in our business; clients are looking to learn how to set up an SMSF, for those who don’t know SMSF, stands for Self Managed Super Fund. From this most people would then like to know how to invest in property within their SMSF and many clients invest in two properties in and out of Super. Why? Within SMSF you can invest in Property and obviously other forms of investments, such as shares, Forex, Cash etc, but Property is a well sort after due to you having control of the asset, it is bricks and mortar a tangible asset you can touch and feel. But the only problem with SMSF is you can’t duplicate out of the equity growth. That’s why clients often invest outside of SMSF so they can build a portfolio of property using the equity growth in each property to purchase another property and get the power of Compound Capital Growth working for you, and this is where the real wealth is created.

RBA Holds Rates While Economy Improves The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has kept the cash rate steady at 3 per cent for the third consecutive month while the Australian economy continues to show signs of improvement, says leading mortgage broker Loan Market. Loan Market Corporate Spokesman Paul Smith said that with positive economic indicators such as a 2.2 per cent inflation rate, an increase in home auction clearance rates and an increase in retail trade the RBA was justified to not adjust the cash rate this month. “Home owners would certainly welcome lower repayments but the RBA has to consider the wider implications of lowering the cash rate and today they’ve continued with the same wait-and-see strategy displayed over the past two years, Mr Smith said. “Fixed rates remain nearly a full percentage point below most variable rates. This is strong evidence that the lending markets are anticipating a rate cut. Additionally, there’s an affluence of reports that cost-of-funds pressures are easing for banks. It’s very likely we will see some strong competition in the next few months from lenders looking to offer the lowest interest rates, he said. Mr Smith said that it was still too early to expect lenders to adjust their variable rates without action from the RBA, unless it was a movement to pass on previous rate cuts or to fall in line with offerings from other banks.

SMCS Gifted and Talented Workshop SMCS was fortunate to host a visit from Tessa Bremner, last week. Tessa’s unique BodyMindVoice training methods have been developed and implemented over many years. She has trained performers for major opera and theatre companies in Australia and has directed and coached countless artists, now performing successfully nationally and internationally. Tessa has worked with leading international and national artists including Dame Joan Sutherland, Yvonne Kenny, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Denis O’Neill, Teresa La Rocca, Elizabeth Campbell, David Thelander and Dame Janet Baker. Tessa’s method of BodyMindVoice is derived from the Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Tessa’s own theatre and opera directing and the training of young professional singers. SMCS hosted the visits which included: working with a gifted and talented group on Monday and

Tuesday and individually with students from the Drama elective on Wednesday, increasing their confidence in their performances and, in some cases, correcting posture and/ or jaw tension to increase volume. On Thursday, Tessa worked with a gifted and talented group at Bombala Public School and on Friday she was hosted by Numeralla Public School where she worked with gifted and talented students from a number of small schools across the Monaro. On this day she was also able to enjoy the cooking of the Numeralla students, who prepared a feast for Mrs Bremner from the foods grown in the Numeralla School garden. It has been an enormous pleasure, as well as an amazing educational experience, to have Tessa work with students on the Monaro. Check for infertility disease in rams should be tested by a vet to confirm the diagnosis,” said Dr Salmon. “It takes several tests over a few months to eradicate OB, so rams should be checked as soon as possible after the end of joining and the blood tests should start once the rams have been out of the ewes for four weeks”. Testing for OB involves taking a blood sample from each individual ram and sending it to a laboratory. Costs vary depending on the region. “The small cost of testing your rams is much less than the potentially significant economic losses of not testing and having OB affect the productivity of your enterprise,” said Dr Salmon. For more information about the disease, testing and management of OB, please contact your local LHPA district veterinarian or private practitioner

NSW sheep farmers are being reminded to check their rams for ovine Brucellosis (OB), a disease which causes infertility in rams. OB is caused by the bacteria Brucella ovis, which targets the reproductive systems of rams. According to Livestock Health and Pest Authorities (LHPA) Senior District Veterinarian Dan Salmon, it’s important to eradicate the disease before it becomes a problem. “OB can have a significant impact on productivity, so it’s in the best interests of farmers to not allow it to take a hold in their flock,” he said. Ram wastage, low lamb-marking percentages and drawn out lambing periods are some of the effects of the disease, which can affect up to 50% of rams in a flock. “It’s not hard to check for OB by feeling for lumps in the testicles, and if lumps are found the ram

Bushpigs Win Country Cup

Miss Piggies travel to Cowra Last weekend the Jindabyne Miss Piggies travelled all the way to Cowra to play in a 10-a-side competition. The first game they took on Grenfell and with many players making their debuts they came away with a nil all draw, for many of the girls this was their first taste of full contact rugby and they all played exceptionally well and tackled their hearts out to keep Grenfell from scoring. Skipper Teresa Dunn went close to scoring and we were denied 2 other tries with close calls. The second game was a very physical encounter with Cowra, but again the girls kept the Cowra girls at bay with some desperate

Jindabyne Bushpigs winners of the Country Cup. Last weekend the Jindabyne Bushpigs travelled to Kiama for the Kiama Sevens Rugby Tournament. The tournament is the world’s largest one day sevens tournament, consisting of 48 teams ranging from country sides such as the Pigs right through to Sydney Club Rugby sides such as Sydney University and Randwick and International sides such as Fijian Tongan and Samoan sides. The day was the wettest in Kiama’s history with a small tornado hitting later that night but that didn’t stop the Bushpigs boys from bringing home the Country Cup and $1000 in prize money. Fourteen travelled down to Kiama with Grand Final man of the match Josh Shortland withdrawing during the week but still travelling with the side. Game one saw the Bushpigs take on Scone in a hard fought game , John Field and Steve Romppanen both played out of their skin making several barnstorming runs and big tackles, with the Pigs coming out victorious 19-12. The second game against Grenfell saw the rain come in the heaviest it had all day but the Bushpigs stuck to their guns and played terrific considering the circumstances, Matt Caldwell showed his pace down the blind side combining with Liam pepper and Taku Tairoa for a few tries while Jake Roarty showed us some of his old speed by making a great solo 80m effort down field for a try, Bushpigs coming out the winners 330. Winning both these games meant the Bushpigs were into the finals and coming up against Shoalhaven, the Bushpigs got off to a good start with Dave Akkersdyk combining with Craig Dixon to score out wide though a good slide of hands

started by new recruit Rob Morris. However the boys got caught napping on several occasions and ended up going down 17-7. Not all was lost for the Bushpig boys with the side finishing up the top ranked country team of the tournament and after their dream run in the plate finals would fight it out with Scone in the final of the country cup. The pigs got off to a great start with Matt Caldwell making a break down the field taking in two defenders to offload the ball to James Field to score within a couple of minutes of play. Scone came back with some big barnstorming runs which saw Steve Romppanen placing his head in the wrong position which resulted in being knocked out but shook off the stars to return to the field of play. Great steals from both Roarty and Tairoa combined with big runs from Jared Gilkison led to the Bushpigs second try through a good slide of hands to Andrew McDonald who showed a little class throwing a dummy and going in out wide. The Bushpigs came out winners and country cup champions defeating scone 12-10. Captain Coach Matt Caldwell was proud of the commitment the guys showed in the lead up to the tournament and playing to their full potential under such harsh conditions. A special thank you to Erin Caldwell (Trainer), Mick Swinney (Coach) and Jeremy Witherdin (Manager) for their help throughout the tournament and a huge thank you to Alpine Glass and Screens, Coops Painting Services and Lake Crackenback Resort and Spa for all their help through sponsorship.

defence. The game was broken wide open with a strong run from Jesse “Bruiser” Cullen who busted a couple of tackles to score beside the posts. The final score was 5 to nil to Jindabyne. We need to make a special mention to Geoff Stubbs for travelling all that way on Saturday to strap the girls, Kristy Blyton for coming along for first aid but also to Kim Ashby who, when she found out that the 7’s tournament in Sydney was cancelled turned around and drove to Cowra in time for the first game. The girls next game is April 6 in Batemans Bay at a 7 a side comp.

Tuesday was a beautiful day for the final of the Major Pairs and the start of the Major Singles. The greens were running superbly thanks to greenkeepers and Geoff who, since retiring, has been a regular Tuesday morning helper for the Ladies . A big thank you to Mark Buckley for Umpiring on the day. In the Major pairs L West and O Jebbink played R Steinfort and G Caldwell, Olga getting off to a 12-5 lead by end nine when Gwen and Rulie retaliated and by end 17 picked up 7seven shots to bring them within four shots. Olga and Lorraine were lucky to pick up a shot on the last end to win 21-16. Well done to Gwen and Rulie who have gelled together very well as a first time combination. Congratulations to all who participated as there was some great games played in the competition . In the Major Singles, it was the first games played to the new 25 up rule. V Clark and D Russell battled it out ,Val testing out her new set of bowls

and seemed to be able to handle them very well. Although having the upper-hand from end eight, Dawn showed her ability o draw bowls and keep Val on her toes ,Val coming out a winner 2715. S Sellars played M Obermaier. Sue had her best start in this game until end 19 when Mary plugged along to bring the score to 14 al. From here on Mary was putting the pressure on and Sue was feeling the game slip away, trying hard to keep it within her grasp but Mary ended it with a 2519 win . Rink 5 was the past winners of the Minor and Major Singles playing each other – L Snell and M D’Amico. Maureen found it a bit hard to get started, Leonie leading out 9-1 after seven ends was always going to be a tough opposition to give shots away freely, but by end 26 Maureen was able peg the score back 18-20, Leonie taking the final two ends to win 2518. Great game girls . The afternoon game was another Singles game between K Sach and H Peuker. Kath bolted out of

the blocks leading 15-2 after eight ends , Helen feeling like packing it up and going home when the adrenalin set in and picked up 15 shots and found herself only one down on the 16th end. Kath picked up the next three ends to lead 19-15. Helen wasn’t going to let this let this finish now and started to find her aim again and the winning shots to lead 20-19. Kath must have been feeling down after her mammoth lead slipping away picked up four shots to take the lead again 23-20 on end 21. Helen kept her cool to pick up six shots over the last three ends to push home 26-23. This was a gripping game taking almost three hours. Congratulations to the both of you just goes to show it’s never over until the final bowl is played in these games. Congratulations to all the winner and the losers get to play again in the Minors or next year. Thanking all the girls that gave up their time to help as markers ,remember if you lose you are expected to mark in the next game.

School netball carnival a huge success There was plenty of heated competition at the Snowy Hydro Netball Courts on Wednesday when overmore than 230 students, dodged, intercepted and shot for goal in the Cooma Netball Association annual school netball competition. Netball has grown in popularity in Cooma and it was great to see newcomers to the game and also the finesse of more experienced players on the courts. The warm weather was a stark contrast to the cold and wet day we experienced last year and the day drew in players from around the region from schools in Cooma, Bombala and Jindabyne. The school netball carnival is held each year as a pre-season event for the Cooma Netball

Years 5/6 division was won by Association – their Saturday competition season runs from Bombala Public School - Swifts Years 7/8 division was won by March to July (so as not to play Jindabyne Central School too much into the winter season). Years 9/10 division was won All schools were fighting for the Cooma Netball perpetual trophy by Snowy Mountains Grammar School Years 11/12 division was won by Snowy Mountains Grammar School Primary School Perpetual Trophy was won by Bombala Public School for the second consecutive year. Secondary School Perpetual Trophy was won by Snowy Mountains Grammar School. Cooma Netball Association facilitates this Annual Carnival every year. Thanks must go out to all volunteers on the day. Major singles bowls

Six matches were completed in Major Singles last Saturday in warm sunny weather. Mel Storta was in fine form against Mick Mayhew when he shot out to a 14/1 lead. Four shots to Mick on end eight must have stirred up Mel as he again dominated from that point to the end of the game in winning 31/12. Paul Cannell took just 15 ends to defeat Denis Steinfort, allowing Denis to score on only one end, to win 33/2. Neil McGregor had the better of the early ends against Garry Taylor to lead 8/4 on end nine. Four shots and three shots on the next two ends put Garry in front and try as he might, Neil was unable to regain the lead with Garry eventually winning 31/20. John Schoon got an early break on Nelson Wallace to lead 9/4 after nine ends. Four shots to Nelson brought him back into the game but his joy was short lived as John again outscored Nelson to go on and win 31/15. Jack Sajina brought out the best in Mark Buckley when they were 7/7 on end nine. From that point on Mark dominated play and went on to win 31/11. Wayne Lodge was unstoppable against Kim Weston when he went to the front 21/1 after just nine ends. Although Kim outscored Wayne 13 shots to 10 over the next 14 ends, 20 shots start was too much to make up, with Wayne winning 31/14. The

remaining matches in this event are to be played before 6/4/2013, with the match between Geoff Venables and Ross Russell needing to be played earlier to decide who will oppose Garry Taylor in the quarter final. In District Pennants, Cooma 1 defeated Cooma 2 on all three rinks with aggregate of 80/44 for 6 points to nil. Adaminaby defeated Jindabyne 2 ½ rinks to ½ and aggregate 65/49, 5 ½ points to ½ point. In District Monaro Shield Cooma 1 defeated Cooma 2 on one rink (by a big margin) but lost on two rinks for an aggregate of 75/63, 3 points to two. Jindabyne defeated Bombala 2 ½ rinks to ½ for an aggregate of 63/41, 4 ½ points to ½ point. The point score in Pennants is, Cooma 1 – 12 points, Jindabyne – 11, Adaminaby – 10 1/2 , Cooma 2 – 1 point. In Monaro Shield Cooma 1 is 11 ½ Jindabyne 8, Cooma 2 is 7, Nimmitabel 3 and Bombala 1/2. Players who are still in the Major Singles are advised that their matches must be played before 6/4/13. Monaro Shield and Pennant players are reminded that the cards are called at 12:30pm with roll up at 12:45 and play to start at 1pm. All players should be at the venue in time to pay green fees before cards are called. That is before 12:30pm.

Summer squash competition

The summer comp is well underway and going well. There have been some standout performances by some of our B grade participants – and it has been very pleasing to see some new faces in the comp – particularly younger members. In this week’s comp Eloise Blanchard (Cooma Trophy and Gifts) played a 5 game match against Kristie Seears, eventually winning 3-2. On the same court young Darcy Clayton (Snowy Hydro) took on another up and coming youngster Alex Childs (Cooma Trophy and Gifts) and kept onlookers watching for 45 minutes before running out the winner 3-2. Well played boys! Susan Walters (Cooma Crane Hire) has been doing very well this comp. but had a battle on her hands with Larry Maat (Monaro Discount Tyres). She took the first 9-2, lost the next two 9-5 and 10-8, winning the next game 9-2. That took it to a 2-all score. Susan and Larry pulled out all stops

but Susan finally won the last game 10-8 – the last game was certainly worth watching. Newcomers Brad Constance and Bryn Jones had a good match with Bryn (Hillross) defeating Brad (Hydraulinks Cooma) 3-1. Tony Potter (Kleven Spain) continued his winning run by defeating Jim Nichols (Mark Kenmir & Co.) Tony has shown he has the No. 2 spot sown up this comp. It has been great to see Steve Johnson come back into the comp after a break and his form has shown he will be moving up through the grades at a good rate of knots (as will Matt Shirvington and Sam Pearce). Very encouraging to see these younger players doing so well. Thursday’s results are as follows: Kleven Spain 10 def. Mark Kenmir & Co. 8; Hillross 14 def. Hydraulinks Cooma 5; Monaro Discount Tyres def. Cooma Crane Hire 9 and Cooma Trophy and Gifts def. Snowy Hydro 6.
