Southcare calls on Dalgety

The Dalgety School community was on hand last Wednesday to receive congratulations from Snowy Hydro Southcare for their fundraising efforts earlier this year. The school raised more per student than any other school in the district and they were rewarded with a visit from the helicopter last week. The occasion also provided an opportunity for local media to experience first-hand, the operations of the helicopter, with a flight from Cooma to Dalgety via Thredbo and Jindabyne. Emergency services report

The Cooma Flower Shop in Sharp Street received malicious damage to its front door and large front window some time in the evening between Wednesday October 10 and Thursday October 11. Anybody with information is asked to call Cooma police on 6452 0099. Last Wednesday October 10 a late model Subaru from Sydney, with two women and two children in it travelling toward Cooma, pulled over on the side of the road between Collington and Bredbo when they noticed a strange noise coming from the car as they accelerated. Upon exiting the vehicle it was noticed flames were coming from near the radiator. A passing vehicle tried to extinguish the flames but was unsuccessful. As a result the car was totally destroyed and towed from the

scene. The fire was put out by the RFS and no injuries occurred. A 35-year-old Cooma woman has been issued with an infringement notice from police for $300 and a banning order by Coles for shop lifting on Sunday October 7. She was paying for some items and when asked to open her bag refused. Police were in the store at the time and when challenged by them she complied. She had an amount of pet food and accessories to the value of $33 in her bag. Police pulled over a vehicle with an expired registration on the Snowy Mountains Highway at 9.55pm on October 12, only to discover the driver, a 39-year-old female was also a disqualified driver. She will appear in court at a later date.

The ‘new look’ for Cooma Cooma-Monaro Shire is to have a ‘new look’ with council accepting a proposed logo and branding at its October meeting. At the Council meeting on July 9, Council agreed to place the brand logo on public exhibition for a period of 28 days. Several public submissions were received. The majority of the feedback received was positive. The main points from the public and submissions and comments from committee members included: • didn’t have other options to judge it against – no choice • the undulating lines lack substance, not enough direct meaning • some were against the “colours” but not against a new branding – time for a change • bright colours are vibrant – hits you on impact • colours reflect a vibrancy rather than representing the Monaro • liked the banners – eye catching and festive • the majority agreed with the wording – Capital of the Snowy Mountains • suggested wording – Capital (or Hub) of the Monaro • suggested wording - Destination for the Snowy Mountains Region • happy with the word Capital - we are the largest centre in this region • wording - Snowy Mountains already

Helping a young sportsman The Cooma Cats and their sponor, the Australian Hotel, have joined forces to help aspiring racing driver Chris Anthony. The groups donated $1200 towards Chris’ career last week, with funds raised through special meat tray raffles held at the hotel. Cooma-Monaro Shire Council report Reintroduction of E-waste fee From November 1, 2012 Council will reintroduce a fee for the disposal of E-waste units for residents of the Cooma-Monaro Shire. The fee will be $6 per unit. At a Waste Working Party meeting held on June 26, 2012 it was recommended and subsequently adopted by Council at their July 9 meeting that no fees would be charged for the disposal of E-waste at the Cooma Landfill Depot. The initial response to the fee waiver was enormous and residents disposed of hundreds of units. The fee-free E-waste trial was only for a period of three months which would allow Council to determine the unit quantities, whether they were excessive and in the event of no collection service being provided via the Federal Collection Service, should a tipping

New draft of LEP The Cooma-Monaro Shire Council’s new draft of the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) is to be on public exhibition for the next eight weeks. The report, which has been in the works for a number of years, is now finally on exhibition thanks to the feedback from the community, which has been invaluable in

resolving concerns which came to light earlier regarding the plan. Some anomalies which were discovered with some of the “minimum lot size” maps that accompanied the LEP have now been corrected and amended and Council has opted to leave the plan on exhibition for two weeks longer than originally intended, to allow the community additional time to review the correct maps. The new government and new planning minister have meant that Council has been able to access areas previously closed to them, with the State Government allowing some issues to be dealt with in a more favourable way which has been very helpful. Workshops are now scheduled to take place in Bredbo, Numeralla, Nimmitabel, Michelago, Smith’s Road, Shannon’s Flat and Cooma subject

Frequency of water meter readings to increase The NSW State Government Best Practice Management Water Supply and Sewerage Guidelines has recently recommended that water meters should be read “at least three times per year and preferably every quarter to improve the effectiveness of pricing signals.” There are a number of benefits in adopting this approach, not only for the Council but for the consumer as well. For consumers, more regular accounts to residents will make bills easier to manage as each one will be relatively smaller and bills at more regular intervals will allow residents to better manage their water consumption, which can lead to financial savings. For the Council, more regular readings will provide opportunities for Council to spend less on enlarging infrastructure, in the long term, will make more water available within Council’s licence to allow growth in the community, improve cash flow for water income and allow for some offsetting

New aerator for Bredbo Water Supply The aerator currently operating in supplying Bredbo’s household water, is finally showing severe signs of age and Council is now considering tenders for the fabrication, supply, installation and commissioning of a new aerator for the Village’s water supply. The water for the Village of Bredbo has been drawn from the bores on the Murrumbidgee River aquifer for many years, however the water contains high concentrations of soluble iron, which must be reduced to meet the drinking water guidelines set out by the Department of Health. This has been achieved for over 40 years via the existing aerator, which was commissioned for the Village around the year 1968. Tenders were advertised locally and closed on September 20, 2012 and Council has accepted a tender submitted by Allenspach Steel to construct a new aerator.

Lions celebrate 50th anniversary of Southern Cloud Memorial Draft LEP - Have your say Cooma-Monaro Shire’s draft local environmental plan (LEP) has been on exhibition now for two weeks. During the first week of the exhibition period, planning staff were made aware of some discrepancies with a number of the Lot Size Zoning maps and a date on the Strategic Direction document. These documents have now been amended and council has extended the exhibition and submission period to Friday, 15 December 2012. The discovery of these discrepancies highlights the importance and value of exhibition periods, which provide opportunities for the public to inspect and comment on council documents. For this reason, I am urging all residents and ratepayers to make the time to inspect the LEP documents that are on display in the foyer of the council office in Cooma, the Monaro Regional Library and the Michelago General Store. As well, all the documents are available for viewing on council’s website: www.cooma.nsw.gov.au The development and implementation of the new LEP has been a lengthy process and councillors have been involved in this process every step of the way. One of the battles that council fought and won on behalf of the community relates to “lot averaging”, a provision that council has been able to retain in respect of the subdivision of rural land. The outcome of these years of work, discussion and consultation is a local environmental plan that covers the entire Cooma-Monaro Shire instead of the three separate documents that are now in place. It is now time for the community to have its say on the draft LEP and for this reason, a series of public meetings are being held across the shire and in Cooma throughout October. Meetings were held at Numeralla and Nimmitabel last Saturday and in Cooma on Tuesday. Further meetings will be held at the Smiths Road fire shed and the Bredbo hall this Saturday, 20 October and at the Shannons Flat and Michelago halls on Saturday, 27 October. A second meeting will be held at the Cooma council chambers on Thursday, 25 October.

Last Saturday Cooma Lions Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of the aviation pioneers park and Southern Cloud Memorial. The club celebrated with a sausage sizzle and was pleased to welcome Tom Sonter, the man who discovered the wreckage of the Southern Cloud in 1958, 37 years after

Landscape concept plan The council meeting of Monday, 8 October saw councillors resolve to consider a petition to upgrade Cooma’s footpaths as part of the CBD/Centennial Park upgrade project. An updated concept plan has been received from the consultants DSB Landscape Architects, incorporating specific mention of the need to work on footpath repairs and improvements. The concept plan and illustrations will now go on public exhibition, with the community’s views to be presented to the December meeting of council. The exhibition locations and invitation for submissions can be found on council’s Communique Page in today’s paper. It should be noted that council has been working on footpath improvements for some time, including work in Vale and Massie streets and the current Sharp Street project in the vicinity of the Westpac Bank. This will be followed by work outside Mack’s Auto to eliminate other footpath hazards.

Here’s a question The Postman has been asked – would you rather have a new logo for Cooma, with all new livery, stationery, etc, or would you rather have safe footpaths? It’s a question Cooma-Monaro Shire Council will have to resolve. With more than 500 people signing a petition to express their concern about the state of the footpaths, watching council spend money on a new corporate logo is not likely to be very popular. The Postman was surprised to see, in last week’s council business paper, no negative comments about the new logo. The Postman knows several negative comments were submitted. They must have been overlooked when the report was being finalised for council’s consideration. Any logo should instantly identify the brand it is representing – with or without explanatory text. But without the words, including Cooma, the new council logo really doesn’t identify with Cooma or the Monaro, The Postman believes. Congratulations to Cooma Lions Club on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Southern Cloud Memorial. It was good to see Tom Sonter present at the celebrations. But The Postman wants to know if Mr Sonter caught up with any of the nurses he mentioned in his address?

Thanks to all who helped Editor, Last Wednesday, October 10, 2012, our two daughters and two small grandchildren were travelling to Cooma when their two-year-old station wagon caught fire at Gungoandra Gap and was completely destroyed. Thanks to the very timely arrival of Bredbo Bush Fire Brigade member, Ken Bowerman and other motorists, all four passengers safely escaped and their luggage was removed from the boot. Will Goggin was also quickly on the scene to help Ken with control of

the fire. Thanks to the many other passing motorists who stopped to offer assistance. On behalf of our family, we convey to all who assisted, our gratitude and heartfelt thanks. On the sale of Cubbie Station Editor, I have heard in an interview this morning that Cubbie Station has been sold. Barnaby Joyce stated in an interview with Stephanie Small (Saturday October 13, 2012 08:14:00) and it reads as follows; “A motion passed by the Senate, supported by the National Party, the Liberal Party, the Democratic Labour Party of Australia and the Greens and Senator Xenophon, asking for the Treasurer to clearly explain why this was not contrary to the national interest. And he’s refused to do that, or he hasn’t done it.” For whatever reason the Treasurer failed to explain why this was not contrary to the national interest, I believe it is a blight on the democratic process and not to the Treasurers credit. The Govenment has seen fit in the recent past to buy other Stations with water entitlements so I believe they could have done the same again

only this time allowing it to trade as a Research Station without an impact on local employment and still allowing for flexibility in decision making in regard to the massive water entitlements to the benefit of all Australians, community, environment and the Murray Darling Basin. This would make us a more clever country I believe. Not all Australians believe that “Free Trade” is a good thing for Australia today nor for future generations. Will the greedy look after the needy? I can recall the time when Prime Minister Keating told the world we were heading for a “Banana Republic” well it seems to me with all the deregulation, the short term planning by successive Australian State and Federal Governments as opposed to the Chinese 40 year planning period, then Mr Keating’s prediction seems likely to be right. The Salvos alive and well in Cooma Editor, I wish to advise the public that the Salvation Army is alive and well in Cooma. A number of people are under the impression that the ‘army’ is closed. We have had to temporarily close the ‘Family store’ so that several administrative matters can be sorted out. Yes the store will re-open as soon as we finalise the above matters. The Salvation Army has the responsibility to coordinate the catering when there is an emergency such as the floods earlier this year and when there is bushfires. We will be meeting soon with other organisations to coordinate their assisting us to carry out this function. However the Salvation Army Emergency Service (SAES) has a team of their own of

which I am the coordinator. This team may be required to use the trailer kitchen which is based in Cooma and or to make sandwiches, take food to various localities for other emergency services such as the SES, RFS etc. The forecast for this summer predicts a very high expectancy for major bushfires, because of these forecasts I will be getting together a group of volunteers before the summer to train them in safe food handling etc., so that we have a team ready to go. Snowliner’s Kimberley Experience Saturday August 18 - we leave Cooma at 5am for our flight to Sydney then Darwin where it is a constant 30-32 degrees. We heard that you have snow tonight. Checking into our motel we have a short exploration of the city before a sumptuous dinner in the restaurant overlooking the city of Darwin. Sunday is a free day to explore or travel to Litchfield National Park. The Jumping Crocodile Cruise is a must for all tourists to the area. With visits from Archie, Agro and Michael Jackson, a 45-year-old part albino male crocodile. On their last count it is believed there are 7,000 crocodiles in the Adelaide River. A visit to the Wetlands Information Centre was a bonus with many hands-on exhibitions and obviously views over the wetlands of the Adelaide River region. A swim in Wangi Falls was refreshing but the crowds reminded me of a visit to Bondi Beach in Sydney. Tolmer and Florence Falls also had many visitors enjoying their beauty. Our last stop was at the mighty Cathedral Termite Mounds and the numerous magnetic mounds. We believe it takes approximately 10 years for a mound to grow one metre. A hop on hop off tour around Darwin was enjoyed by many or just resting before our adventure begins tomorrow. Ryan and Rob our guides and drivers, meet us bright and early on Monday morning to commence our exploration into the Kimberleys A stop was made at the Lazy Lizard Hotel at Pine Creek which is made out of termite mound blocks. Old termite mounds make an excellent base for patios, housing foundations and even the runway strips in abundant evidence, which were constructed during the war to combat a possible invasion by the Japanese. Edith River was crossed and it was hard to believe that last year the bridge was washed out following 300 m of rain in seven hours. Edith Falls provided a refreshing dip for me and to our now overheated bodies it was quite cool. A cruise on the majestic

Katherine Gorge – Nitmaluk – was a new experience for many. It is hard to comprehend that during the wet season another 30 metres of water rages through the Gorge. Tonight we get to know many of our new passengers by finding our matching card couple for dinner. Tuesday we are up bright and early stopping at Victoria River Crossing where the sign proudly hangs advising it is under new management or at least under new wife! Morning tea was then enjoyed on the banks of the Victoria River where a couple travelling around Australia for five months enjoyed a chat. They live in Gladstone Queensland and in four months had not made it to Kununurra, they just keep finding places to stay and explore. Policeman’s Point was our lunch stop, the food that is in the back of one of our buses (trucks) is unbelievable. A stop is made to inspect the Boab tree with Ryan pointing out one of the older trees estimated to be 1,0002,000 years old. Aboriginal culture believes the Boab was a beautiful arrogant tree so it was uprooted and replanted upside down. The essential stop at the Quarantine Station on the border has a bit of our unused fruit and vegies being handed over. A small exploration at Kununurra was made and the local economy supported. Several visited the Lovell Art Gallery where wonderful art works of the area can be found – yes I do believe a few purchases were made.

or Lake Kununurra. Dylan our captain and guide explains the construction of the Ord Dam which was completed in 1972 and the Diversion Dam 55 km downstream. It has the ability to hold 84 times the capacity of Sydney Harbour but at 21 times the capacity is considered to be 100 percent full. During the 2010/11 wet season rain fell in amounts that had never been measured before. One of the three overflow creeks/ rivers came into play and the dam was then estimated to be 42 times the size of Sydney Harbour. At the peak flows in 1½ days the yearly water usage of Perth was flowing through Spillway Creek to Stonewall Creek and into the Ord River. Stonewall Creek is also considered to have the highest density of freshwater crocodiles. 15 km from the dam wall is considered to be the true backwaters of Lake Kununurra. Ryan advises us that the population of the Kimberley region is 40,000 but during the season this multiplies by 15 fold – that’s 600,000 visitors during the last tourist season. The Kimberley Grand Resort put on a fabulous evening buffet for us. Rob and Ryan normally do camping tours so they are experiencing a few luxuries with us and by the helpings definitely enjoying having dinner cooked for them. Cooma-Monaro Draft Local Environmental Plan 2012 The draft LEP 2012, and associated documents have been on exhibition since Wednesday, 3 October 2012. During the first week staff became aware of some discrepancies with a number of ‘Lot Size Zoning’ maps, and the date ‘2012-2030’ appearing in the Strategic Direction 2011-2030 document. These documents have been amended and apologies are extended for the inconvenience caused. As a result Council has extended the exhibition period to Friday, 15 December 2012. Summer and Snakes!!! With the onset of spring/summer, Council would like to remind property owners to please maintain their property and be vigilant with long overgrown grass areas. Council receives numerous complaints each year during the drier periods regarding potential fire danger and hazardous properties. These complaints also often include the danger of snakes. It should be noted that snakes are on the move due to the heat and they are looking for shade and water. Snakes will generally stay away from people but can be encountered in gardens and around houses, especially those near bushland and creeks. All residents and land owners are requested to maintain their property, paying particular attention to watercourses and sheds, laneways and fence lines. Please remember that Cooma is a rural township and that encounters with snakes are possible. Should you have a snake at your house or shed it is suggested that you call LAOKO on 6456 1313. If a person is available they will try and help to remove the reptile to a more appropriate location.

WATERMAIN RECONSTRUCTION WORK ON YAREEN ROAD AND WOORAN STREET, COOMA

Cooma Centennial Park & Sharp Street Landscape Concept Plan

Please be advised that work associated with watermain and water service reconstruction within Yareen Road and Wooran Street is programmed to be undertaken between 8 October 2012 and 23 November 2012, weather permitting. Watermain and water service reconstruction work along Yareen Road will occur between Wonga Street and the intersection of Wooran Street. This work is expected to be completed within three (3) weeks. Watermain and water service reconstruction work along Wooran Street is expected to be completed within four (4) weeks. The work may cause minor disruption to property driveway access at times and notification concerning individual driveway access will be given to affected property owners as the work progresses. Temporary road closures at the Yareen Road/Wooran Street intersection and Wangie/ Wooran Street intersections will be required at particular times during construction to facilitate segments of the work. Appropriate traffic control measures will be in place for the duration of the work to assist in improving work site safety and the general safety of pedestrians and motorists. This necessary work is part of Cooma Monaro Shire Council’s continuing watermain replacement program. Work will be carried out between 7:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday. National Tree Day - Native Plant Giveaway in the Park

National Water Week is an annual awareness week that aims to improve community understanding of water issues in Australia. Commencing on the third Sunday of October, it is Australia’s only national water awareness week. The theme for 2012 National Water Week is ‘Valuing our Water’. Water must be used wisely if there is to be enough to meet the needs of future generations. It is times like now, when the dam levels are rising, that we should look at the long term usage by continuing to encourage sound water practices and investment in diverse sources of water, whether these be recycling, desalination inter-basin transfers or demand management or a combination. To celebrate Water Week 2012, Council will be holding an information stall in Sharp Street, near the Visitors Centre, on Friday 26 October, from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. There will be information on saving water in the home and garden, water-wise garden watering, greywater use and much more. We will have three 60ltr water tanks, with tap, to give away to three lucky residents of the Shire. To be eligible for the draw come and visit us at the stall and fill out an entry form (one entry only per Cooma-Monaro Shire resident). The draw will take place on Monday 29 October and winners will be notified by phone.

Lambie Street Preschool Art show -19th & 20th October

Cooma’s Lambie Street Preschool needs your support to raise money for its building fund! The annual Art Show opening night is on Friday October 19 and will be an exciting night showcasing the art work of the Preschool’s children, provide wine and a light supper, live music and special AMAZING guests that will open the Show! “Our school is a notfor-profit community run preschool that’s been providing quality early childhood education for families on The Monaro for over 50 years, and we need help from everyone in our community”, said Cathy Toohey, Preschool Director. “Did you attend Lambie Street Preschool? What about a child, grandchild, niece or nephew? If you know anyone who did or is attending Lambie Street, you’ll know about the amazing art and creativity program the children enjoy as a part of our early literacy program during their time here”, Cathy said. “People might not be

aware that the money to build the Preschool over 50 years ago was raised completely in our local community and there’s a great story about one of the parents selling hams from the back of his ute at Christmas time to help raise funds! “We’re not asking anyone to spruik their wares! We’re asking people across The Monaro to buy tickets to the opening night and enjoy a feast of creativity, wine, food and music, a celebration of preschooler’s art works and at the same time help us to raise the money we need for essential building improvements!”, she said. Cooma Little Theatre members are at it again The stage has remained fairly quiet for the past few months at Cooma Little Theatre due to unforeseen circumstances. Not for much longer their next production is receiving final polishing touches and will be ready to entertain theatre goers from early November. “Mayflies, Mystery and Mayhem” - a triple treat of one act plays is sure to contain something to please everyone in the audience. The first play for the event will be “The Grand Cham’s Diamond” written by Allan Monkhouse. This play is being directed by Liz Sherlock and is Liz’s first role as director at CLT as she is usually tucked away in the tech booth designing and

operating lighting plans and effects. This play is a mystery centering around the humdrum life of the Perkins family which is unexpectedly interrupted one evening. It all has to do with the disappearance of a very valuable diamond. The second play “Time Flies” is directed by Nell Pernitsch and written by David Ives. Footpath petition received ‘Get ya hats out’ for the Australian National Busking Championships™ On September 13, Mrs Ruth Blattmann submitted a petition to Cooma-Monaro Shire Council with 500 signatures voicing concerns about the state of the main street footpaths. Mayor Lynch’s comment to The Monaro Post on Wednesday

October 10, was that it is a work in progress. In 2011-2012 budget funds were allocated to the town to the amount of $1.2 million, this is a three-year plan. The petition was put to the new council and they are aware of the problem, they are currently going through

costings. Cr Lynch expressed his delight with the town upgrades so far and is looking forward to putting to work the remaining funds to make Cooma a safer and more attractive town. Cr Lynch would like to thank the community for voicing their concerns.

Paramedics “gutted” by IRC The campaign by rural paramedics to stave off the introduction of dangerous rosters took a blow in the Industrial Relations Commission, the Health Services Union said. The IRC’s Justice Staff has recommended that the rosters, which will see the Union’s members in country NSW working more frequent shifts and longer on-call periods, can be introduced starting from October 20. “Our members are reeling from this decision,” HSU Acting Industrial Manager Tom Stevanja said.

“We’ve been fighting for months against these changes which are certain to put rural paramedics at risk of fatigue, and of the accidents and errors that arise from fatigue. The recommendations rely on management at the local level acting to address issues affecting individual officers. We don’t see this as workable. The rosters are inflexible and staff levels are critically inadequate. “One of the key issues in overwork for rural paramedics is that they are called on to perform long-distance transports of patients between

SRSC news with Joe Vescio On Monday October 8, 2012, Snowy River Shire Council closed the Dalgety Road to allow CC Pines Pty Ltd access to the bridge that crosses Wullwye Creek, locally known as Bate’s Bridge. This closure is part of a project that will see the existing single lane timber bridge removed and replaced by a dual lane concrete bridge, which will be constructed on a slightly modified alignment. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2012 and all traffic between Berridale and Dalgety has been re-routed along the Rockwell Road. To ensure local and business traffic is not adversely affected by travelling along a gravel road, Council has invested a considerable amount of money to address the culvert problem, which crossed Wullwye Creek and to grade the existing road up to an acceptable condition for travel. To ensure the road surface remains suitable for travel, Council have imposed a 60km/h speed restriction along the whole of Rockwell Road. At a public forum held in Buckley’s Crossing Hotel, Dalgety on Tuesday October 2, 2012, a number of residents expressed concern about the timing of this project and suggested that this may have an unnecessary effect on the township of Dalgety. Unfortunately, the issue of Bate’s Bridge is not one that could be ignored very long and with restrictions placed upon the bridge in November 2011, there remains an element of risk that the existing bridge could deteriorate further and cause injury to the travelling public. With numerous activities spread throughout the calendar year, there was never a good time to close the Dalgety Road but Spring was identified as the “least worst” time for Council, the public, residents of Dalgety and the project. Council has updated its webpage and Facebook to inform the public as much as possible and will continue to do so throughout the project.

Jindabyne’s gala concert to fund a grand piano

Carole Thomas and Antoinette Braeder treated Jindabyne to a rare musical treat on Friday night when the 22 piece communitybased swing ConneXion Big Band directed by Sally Greenaway, played to a toe tapping audience in the Memorial Hall. Jazz vocalist Tony Halley accompanied by the band, launched Antoinette’s composition “Nimmitabel Flyer” and during the evening, delighted the audience with his singing including a superb rendition of “Mac the Knife” whilst the Swing Katz swing dancers

Philippa Reville and Dean Scott soon had people dancing. The occasion was to raise money for a grand piano in the Hall. Earlier in the day the band gave a concert for students from the Central School and Snowy Mountains Grammar School.

National RSL President visits

The National President of the Returned and Services League of Australia, Rear Admiral Ken Doolan AO RAN (Retd) visited Cooma last Tuesday to attend the funeral of Athol Gregory (Jock) Goodwin.

Mr Goodwin was the oldest member of the Cooma RSL Subbranch and served as a Pilot Officer with the Royal Australia Air Force during World War Two. Mr Goodwin, who was born in

Cooma in 1914, lived at “Lynton”, Carlaminda Road, Cooma. He died on June 9, aged 97 and his funeral service was held at St Patricks Church, Cooma on Tuesday.

Rear Admiral Doolan spoke of Mr Goodwin’s war service at the funeral. This is the first time a National RSL president has visited Cooma and he joined members of the sub-

Cooma CWA elects new committee Cooma Branch president Barbara Scanes welcomed 20 members to the annual meeting held on October 8. A special welcome was extended to Group vice-president Dorothy Povey, who chaired the election of office bearers. There were four apologies. Following the Anthem and Motto, there was a minute’s silence for those less fortunate than those present. The president reported on the activities of the branch during the past year. There was the State Conference at Blacktown in May which two delegates and observers attended, two council meetings and the Curry Luncheon in June. In March and August the members welcomed the student doctors from the ANU with a lunch and dinners in their homes and in September the Awareness Day was held when a 12-month honorary membership was presented to Jane Redmond. The membership has remained at approximately 30 and they have participated in Land cookery, Handicrafts, Cultural Activities and International study. This year the country studied was Timor Leste which proved to be quite a challenge. The elections resulted as follows: President Barbara Scanes, vice presidents Lyn Stead and Hazel Walker; Secretary Coral Mackenzie; Treasurer Doris

A Feast of Poetry returns to the Raglan 2012 festival and presentation day will be held in the gardens of the historic Raglan Gallery and Cultural Centre, Cooma, on Sunday November 4. This year the event, starting at 10am, will be a celebration of creative writing, song and fun for the whole family. For the first time, a song writing competition has been organised in conjunction with the poetry. Another first will be a Bush Poetry competition for students. Sponsored by Elaine Schofield to encourage young talent, the competition for the best original bush poetry will be held on the day. Interested primary and secondary students are encouraged to come and read their poems and be eligible for prizes. Aspiring poets of all ages, from infants school age to seniors, are encouraged to come along and enter the Poem-on-the-Spot competitions and read poems of their choice in the Open Microphone competition, to be in the running for a host of great prizes. Entry is free for all the competitions on the day. This year A Feast of Poetry has received a record number of entries from adults and students, totally more than 300 poems. The open and bush sections attracted 98 poems and

there were 240 in the student’s divisions, from all states of Fatz Cutz Quality Meat Australia. This year’s judges were Aidan Coleman, poet, 22 Bombala St, Cooma teacher and author from South Australia, who judged the open and bush sections and Harry Laing, poet and creative AVAILABLE writing teacher, who was the judge for infants, primary and secondary sections. The festival day starts at 10am with the announcement of the song competition winners and performances by the talented finalists. Poetry presentations start at 11am, and include comments from the professional judges, readings by student and adult award winners. There will also be refreshments, great coffee and sales of the 2012 Retailer of boots with over 100 styles in stock A Feast of Poetry anthology for $10. Schofield re-elected

The Stallions AGM was held last Wednesday evening at the Cooma Ex-Services Club and following a welcome to the 21 attendees, the Chair was handed over to Mark Williams and all positions declared vacant. Congratulations to the reinstatement of Craig Schofield as President, Dean Lynch Vice President, Beverley Clarke as Secretary (assisted by Anna Steel), Louise Lynch as Treasurer and Debbie Thomas as Registrar. The remainder of the forum became part of the general committee for 2013

with particular responsibilities assigned to several members. The Stallions are looking forward to a successful season in 2013 with three of the four coaches already secured - Steve Dunne (first grade), Nathan Smith (18s) and Craig Schofield (Fillies). Applications for the reserve grade coach are currently being reviewed with an appointment imminent. The westerly winter winds struck again last Saturday and so the social golf had to be abandoned. The last six Fridays have been windy, wet and cold except for one, which produced an extremely hot wind. Like the phoenix, this social golf will rise from the dust and debris caused by the wind. When the weather settles, I hope, this Friday’s social golf game will be a popular

Friday’s outing. This Friday the course and clubhouse will be open from 12 noon with the tee times to 2pm. We will be playing the front nine from the white tees. On Tuesday we played the first round of the Minor Pairs. The first game was M Power, M Obermaier against J Upton, G Connelly (sub G Caldwell). This Game was very close all the way and at most ends it was either equal or only a shot or two in it until the last end when Julie and Gwen won 18-15. Well done girls you played all well. Second game O Jebbink, R Steinfort had a big battle to come out winners on the last end by one point over H Walker, K Sach. This was a great effort for Roulie who is only a relatively new bowler although Olga has has bowled well all season and notched up a few winners. Kath and Hazel

worked their combination very well and it could of been anyone’s game at the end. Congratulations to all . The third game was between the young and the old, the team of M Phillips, S Sellars being the senior pair against S.Seears (who filled in for D Russell) and B Longhurst. Sue and Mary were able to limp over the line at the finish. Thank you for all the girls who filled in Congratulations to the winners and the losers get to do it again next year. The next round will be on October 23. When the Senior’s play Julie and Gwen who just might have to fill up on pep pills to wear them down the way they are playing. SERAS awards for Crimmins brothers Cavaliers’ big reunion Put on your pads and boxes and don’t forget your helmet at this weekend’s Coffeys cavaliers Cricket Clubs 25th anniversary this weekend at Coffeys Hotel. A large number of past and present cricketers will assemble for what should be a really great reunion. Plenty of characters and good cricketers donned the whites (sometimes not quite white) for the cavaliers in both A and B Grade are known to have played either for five seasons of five minutes (or longer). Celebrations commence on Friday night with a meet and greet barbecue at Coffeys Beer Garden at 6pm. The South East Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) gave a presentation at the Council meeting last Monday afternoon where Mr Garry Lane thanked the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council for their continued support of the Academy as well as for their ongoing support in endorsing Mr Mick Mayhew as Chairman of the Board. Mr Lane also mentioned that SERAS was very pleased to see young athletes from the local region being among those sponsored by the Academy. Following the presentation, Mr Phillip Green, of Essential Energy and Mayor Dean Lynch presented the SERAS Certificates to local athletes, Andrew and Thomas Crimmins, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in Downhill Mountain Bike racing.

Andrew has been competing in the under-17 Division and was the winner of the Division’s National Competition 2012 and Thomas has been competing in the under-19 Division which has included competitions in the USA, Canada and Austria. Mr Lane also presented Thomas with the SERAS Athlete of the Year Award. SERAS is now in its 11th year, with 70 to 80 scholarships available for young local athletes and is now located at the University of Canberra. Andrew and Thomas Crimmins are pictured with

Just six bowlers last Saturday to brave the wintery conditions. Max Povey, Ken Bowden and Denis Steinfort took on Sergio Roncelli, Mike Mannile and Richard Nichols in a game of triples but unfortunately the card seems to have blown away in the wind so we don’t know who won. Sunday’s weather was much improved which encouraged 14 players to the green. Allan Crowe, Don Jarvis and Jim Lumsden were leading 13/2 before Keith Goodwin, Ken Bowden and Nelson Wallace offered any opposition to catch up by end 18, 15/15. Six shots to one over the last three ends gave Jim and co the win 21/16. Mike Mannile and Richard Nichols outscored Steve Lapham and Tony Gray two to one to lead 12/6 at the halfway point and went further ahead in the closing stages to win 24/14. Ron Wainwright and Ignazio Mondello were in front of Mick Mayhew and Colin Roberson 17/8 after 14 ends but then went to dreamland and only scored on one end in the closing stages for Mick and Colin to win 26/19.

In order to accommodate a group of people attending the Coffey’s cricket club reunion on Saturday 20 the semi finals of the fours will now be played on Sunday morning 21st at 9.30am with the final in the afternoon. These should be fairly close matches and it is hoped that a number of spectators will be present to cheer the players on. 1.15pm is the proposed starting time for the final. Green space for social bowls will be available both Saturday and Sunday. Entry forms are now on the notice board for major pairs and major singles and entries will close on Sunday November 11. If you have items for the club’s garage sale and because of their size are unable to get it to the club for the sale on Saturday October 27, please phone Keith Goodwin after 6pm to arrange collection and transport. Cooma ladies golf with Midge Theron On Saturday October 6 on a rather wet and miserable day a small field played the first round of the Pat Hain Eclectic . The winner on the day was Marion Burke with a nett 81. The Monthly Medal winner was Dorothy Bilbow. On Sunday October 7 the second round of The Pat Hain Eclectic was played and also the first round of the Ladies 18 hole Championships. Eleven players teed off in much better conditions than the day before. The winner was Gaye Wilson with a fine 77 nett and runner-up to Gaye was Marilynne Weston with a nett 78. Balls were won by Dulcie Thistleton with a nett 79, Lorraine McGregor with a nett 83 and Marian Burke with a nett 85.

The putting was won by Jenny Rainsford with 30 putts Congratulations go to the winner of the Pat Hain Eclectic Marion Burke with a super 69 nett Wednesday October 10 saw 11 ladies hitting off in the nine-hole Stableford competition. The winner, playing very consistently, was Maureen Fletcher with 18 points and R/up to Maureen was Lyn Last with 17 points. Balls were won by Aileen Smith 14 points, Julie Upton 14 points, Denise Ashcroft 13 points and Clare Nowland 11 points. Nearest the pin was won by Maureen Fletcher with a super shot to the 17th green. Well done to all the winners and commiserations to the rest. Better luck next time you tee off . Cooma Rifle Club Last Saturday morning shooting was from 400 yards for the first heat of the monthly spoon competition. Seven members attended of whom four completed the course. The morning was cold with a strong but variable southerly wind. We shot on the new targets with smaller scoring rings, so good scores were difficult to achieve but Damien Doyle shot well and Frank Toth achieved 47 in one of his stages. The scores were: Damien Doyle 49.4 and 49.6 total 97.10,

Frank Toth 40.0 and 47.1 total 87.1, Wayne Rolfe 42.0 and 43.0 total 85.0, Richard Lapham 37.0 and 35.0 total 72.0. With handicaps Damien was ahead with 100, followed by Frank, Wayne and Richard. The big problem most shooters had was with the larger arming mark necessitating a different foresight ring. Next time, maybe. Next Saturday shooting will be from 500 yards.

Miniball presentations finalise basketball season Cooma’s basketballers from four to 12 years were on hand on Friday for their presentation. Each age group played two games in front of a large crowd of supporters, enjoyed a free sausage sizzle, drinks and iceblocks. A very tired group of youngsters were then presented with their awards for 2012. Each player received a basketball, a trophy or a new club sports bag. Raffle prize

winners were the Lairds, Swains, Forrests, Kelly’s and Sopniewskis. Thank you’s go to Henry Byrne on the barbecue, the canteen, raffle ticket sellers, referees, time keepers and parents who looked after the teams and to all those who came along and supported the players. Last but not least thank you to all players for their efforts in 2012 and we hope to see you back in 2013.

2012 Cooma Club Championships decided Cooma Golf report by Garry Atkinson The club championships for 2012 were finalised over the weekend with Adam Robinson taking out A grade with a fine one under par on the final day. Campbell Childs won B grade in a very close tussle and Gordon Western took out C grade with a comfortable victory. Congratulations to our three champions for this year. On Saturday we had 56 golfers compete in round three of the club championships. Dave Paterson took out A grade with a fine 68 nett from Col Langdon with 69 nett. B grade saw Campbell Childs shoot a great 69 nett to win the trophy from Rob Brown with another great round of 70 nett on a countback. C grade was won by Mark Kelly with a 71 nett from Lindsey Blewitt with a 72 nett. Ball winners went out to Trevor Bailey with 74 nett. Nearest the pin on the ninth hole went to Dave Robinson and Greg Abraham had the nearest shot on the 17th with a shot that nearly went in the hole, finishing only a couple of centimetres from the cup. Longest drives were on the 15th hole and A grade was won by Dave Robinson, B grade by Chris Brown and C grade by Lindsay Blewitt. Sunday saw 39 players compete in the final round of the club championships. Steve Young took out A grade with a fine 68 nett from Adam Robinson with 69 nett. In B grade Rob Brown had a strong 71 nett to just edge out that great putter Wayne Ryan with a 72 nett and in C grade Gordon Weston put his

mark on the C grade championships with a 76 nett from Ken Ganya 77 nett. Ball winners went down to Bruce Burton with a 74 nett. Longest drives were on the 13th hole and in A grade Graeme Russell hit one straight and long, John Gargett took out B grade and Greg Abraham won C grade. Nearest the pin on the ninth was won by Adam Robinson and on the 17th Col Langdon hit a lovely shot to two metres. On Wednesday, 24 players competed in the traditional single stableford medley. Andrew Barnes showed his true form to take out the single stableford with a fine 35 points from Norm Marshall on 32 points in A grade. In B grade Charlie Beaumont had round of the day 39 points to just edge out Simon Allen with 38 points. C grade was taken out by Lindsay Blewitt with 37 points from Tony Monday on 32 points. Ball winners went down to 31 points with Dieter Seubert the last of the ball winners. Nearest the pin results were not at hand at the time of writing. Don’t forget our Cooma Open coming up at the end of October and with over $1000 in sponsorship from Subaru this will be an event not to be missed. Junior golf will be starting up on October 25 and we also have the Phoenix 9 hole social game on Friday so there is certainly plenty of golf coming up. Next week sees our normal Wednesday single stableford competition. On Saturday we have the two person ambrose championships and on Sunday there is a single stableford. See you on the greens.

Monaro Cricket season begins The MDCA season finally got under way with a big day of T20 in Cooma in good conditions for cricket, six matches were played with all six teams playing two matches each. The first matches- Berridale easily accounted for Coffeysscoring a huge 3/173 (B Hearn 73 and A Hayes 65*) and keeping Coffeys to 9/71 (J Riley 3/5 and J Hedger 3/5). Cooma Cats defeated Jindabyne in a close encounter with the Cats posting 3/149 (G Van der Plaat 92 and C Khoury 31*) Jindabyne just falling short scoring 7/131 Second MatchesCats destroyed the Cooma Cannons- With the Cats posting 169 mainly thanks to a massive 122 from M Hynes. The Cannons never in the match were rolled for 32. Alpine defeated Coffeys in a very close encounter with Alpine winning the match with a few balls to spare. Third MatchesA much improved showing from the Cannons saw the Cannons post a handy 7/72 before Berridale proved a little too classy with the bat picking off the runs in the 13th over with J Riley (26* and M Bruce

NSW State Title won by James Ewart On the first weekend in September, clay target shooter, James Ewart from Peak View near Cooma, attended the NSW International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) State Championships held at the Sydney International Shooting centre. Shooters attended from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, ACT and New Zealand. James’ main discipline is Double Trap, which is shot at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Australia’s best known Double Trap

Shooter is Russel Mark. James shot 136/150 to qualify second for the final. He was five points behind Newcastle shooter Daniel White (ex-Commonwealth Games Representative). The top six shooters make up the final. In the final James shot 45/50 and Daniel White 39/50 to give James, the NSW State Double Trap Championship by one point.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has received an old blazer belonging to former Cooma Rovers’ player Laurie Jones. Laurie played 5/8th for the team in the 1950s. The blazer has two pockets commemorating the 1950 and 1954 season, when the team won the Group 19 Reserve Grade titles. The blazer came to light when the late Mr Jones’ neighbour contacted his grand daughter, Rhiannon Shaw, to get directions on what to do with the blazer plus some old bowling equipment. Because of its age and good condition, it was decided to frame the blazer and add it to council’s sporting hall of fame, along with details of the Cooma Rovers and Mr Jones’ playing career.

The blazer was presented to Mayor Dean Lynch last Monday morning. Another footballer from the era, Roger Norton, was also present, wearing the blazer he received during his career. Council is looking at how it can best present its sporting hall of fame to the public. At present it is housed adjacent to the council chambers, but is not readily accessible to the general public. Sisters win NZ titles

Cooma’s very own Elle Crisp and Georgia Crisp, travelled to Cardrona New Zealand this month with Peter Baffs Fast Ride FreeSki and SnowBoard camp from Jindabyne. They joined 10 other young competitors from Jindabyne, Sydney and Canberra to compete in the Junior National Ski and Snowboard Titles with fantastic results.

Elle, 17, a skier, entered two events, Skier Cross and the Giant Slalom, and came first in both events receiving a Gold medal for each race entered. Georgia, 12, a snowboarder, entered four events winning medals for every race. Georgia won Gold in the Giant Slalom, Silver in the Half Pipe, Silver in the Slope Style and Silver in the Boarder Cross.

Georgia not only came home with a handful of medals, she also has the honour of being the NSW State Champion in the Boarder Cross and NSW State Champion in the Giant Slalom. The many international competitors travelled from all around the world to compete, with their ages ranging from 7-18 years old.

The New Zealand Junior National Ski and Snowboard Titles were held over five days, from Monday to Friday October 1 to 5 in Cardrona NZ. An extra five days were added to their visit to NZ to recover from all of the excitement of the races and a bit of welldeserved R&R at Wanaka Lake and Queenstown.
